detail

foreign

so last year there was a man who made

the news

and he made the news by parking his car

in his neighbor's driveway when he was

away

he even closed the gate and locked it

like it was his own house

he probably thought him and his neighbor

were really close and they wouldn't mind

often happens when people start when you

start to get close to someone

those who are presumptuous they tend to

misunderstand something in their

relationship

problems

likewise in our relationship to god by

his grace we tend to be presumptuous

with god

because we misunderstand something about

our relationship with god

continuing uh putin

so in the first so verses one to five um

we talk about the allegation of the

presumptions

we see in this passage that there are

powerful people and they take advantage

and oppress the powerless

this shows that the the people who are

oppressing them are doing so

intentionally because of the power

difference

uh

they covet fields and houses and then

seize and confiscate them

because i'm saying

in verse 3

so authors here probably is talking

about king ahaz

who was the king who openly worshipped

bale

poor nam put me i'm not

at one parent teacher of my local youth

just as the powerful plan and go out to

seize the fields and houses of the week

god also judges them by seizing their

fields and houses

verse 4 says uh to an apostate he allots

our fields

so what this looks like is assyria and

babylon come in and

take the land

so notice that this passage is speaking

of the sins of god's people

not of the surrounding

so we ought to be kind to others be

generous with others because god is

merciful and generous

in the community of believers those who

are powerful protect the weak

um because the almighty god protects the

weak

uh that poor timing i'm not a lao ninja

clap

thompson

but those in power did the opposite of

god's character by

oppressing the week

we may say that oh we don't oppress the

weak therefore this passage does not

apply to us

to make

jesus points out we know this that he

points out that sin is not just a

problem of actions and behaviors but

also of our heart hearts

so an example is the bible tells us not

to kill people

you can't

but jesus tells us that killing is not

related to the action

we can also kill people in our hearts by

our words

the problem that comes from the heart of

someone who sees themselves as

the center and they only care about

themselves

right it's a problem that comes from the

heart

of a person who only cares about

so it's possible that we might go out

and not oppress people in our actions

we don't go out and seize people's homes

or fields

it's possible we don't do these things

but there's still a problem with our

selfish and self-centered heart that

does not have mercy on other people

we may have the same problem as seen in

this passage even if our actions may not

be the same

but i know

our heart problem may emerge is not

helping those who are weak

and depressed uh

isaiah 1 expands this point by

condemning all of god's people for

allowing

the powerful to oppress the weak

when you spread out your hands i will

hide my eyes from you even though you

may

you make many prayers i will not listen

your hands are full of blood

wash yourselves make yourselves clean

remove the evil

of your deeds from before my eyes cease

to do evil learn to do good seek justice

correct oppression

bring justice to the fatherless plead

the widow's cause

oftentimes our actions reveal to us that

we're not

living we're

therefore we are in the same situation

as uh

these people in the text even though our

actions are different

our hearts are the same concept

so six versus six to eleven talk about

the assumption of the presumptuous uh to

meet up

so we all know that everyone's we all

have sinful hearts and sin against god

we know that salvation is the process of

jesus saving sinners

the question is when we face our sinful

hearts how do we respond

uh option like

so first option is to deny that we're

sinful or to conceal or blame other

people or even blame our circumstances

second option is to admit that we have

flaws but then we choosing to rely on

our own strengths and goodness to fight

our sinful hearts

uh right now there's not enough time to

explain why these two are dead ends but

we will get to that at some point at

that

in our case these powerful people chose

the third option

they admitted that they have sinned

against god by exploiting the week

but at the same time they presume

themselves as people of god

that he loves and therefore he would not

do anything to them

six quotes a sermon of their own prophet

that forbids god's prophets from

proclaim proclaiming judgments

they say with certainty and confidence

that calamities will never return

they reasoned in verse 7 that god is not

a god who will judge his people

further expands that these prophets

preach of wine

and strong drink

which basically means that god will not

judge but will satisfy and give them

whatever their heart desires

those prosperity preachers spoke to

those in power

like paul tells timothy as their ears

want to hear to satisfy their own

desires

at the end of verse 7 god retorts do not

my words do good to him who walks

uprightly

god's word has good results to those who

walk in his way

on the other hand those who do not want

to live god's way cannot presume to

receive the good things that

the god of grace has prepared for his

people

verses 8 and 9 go on to explain that

they acted hostile and went against

god's way by

verse 10 should give us goosebumps if we

are like them

arise and go for this is no place to

rest because of the uncleanness that

destroys

with their grievous destruction

since the oppression of others renders

restlessness to the victims

god will likewise destroy the rest of

the oppressors

so this is judgment on those who have

offended god

but are presumptuous and fearless and

confident that god would overlook their

sin

and continue to bless their lives

so children tend to see themselves as

the center of things

they think that parents have a duty to

do everything

the child is hungry then the parents

bring them milk

the child falls and the parents come and

console the child

whenever they're sleepy their parents

drop everything and put them to bed

but when children grow up to be adults

they should no longer look at themselves

as a center

and in our relationship to god we tend

to act like children like babies

we think that the god of love has a duty

to bless pamper and give

all that our hearts desire nothing coach

we must understand this carefully

because this is a distortion of faith

that is not all wrong

but rather it's a belief that has many

things right but is wrong in a few key

places

for example we may hear that god loves

us as we are

god does not wait for us to be good to a

certain point before he loves

us and saves us

but just because god loves us as we are

does not mean that god accepts us

and doesn't care about who we are

black people

the first understanding is the joy and

sweetness of god's grace

though the second is a rotten belief

of hypergrace

um

one who believes in hyper grace does not

struggle against

sin uh and they surrender two sins

they're in a dangerous position to be

judged by god

maybe

we who choose to not walk in god's way

and say in our hearts it's okay i am as

i am and i can't change it

but god loves me

this is not someone who understands

god's grace but one who is presumptuous

12-13 talk about the salvation of the

presumptuous

verses 12-13 i will surely assemble all

of you oh jacob i will gather the

remnant of israel

i will set them together like sheep and

they fold like a flock in its pasture

a noisy multitude of men

god the judge who perishes his people

for their sins is also

the shepherd king who faithfully gathers

protects and forgives them

in the midst of a coming judgment god

gave a shepherd who will gather his

people to safety

this is a promise of redemption and

sheer protection

in her history israel had never had such

a shepherd king

john martin not until jesus christ

john 10 11 show jesus shows us that he

is the good

shepherd and the good shepherd lays down

his life for the sheep

paul says in colossians 2 15 that jesus

came to conquer dominions that binds his

and all of our penalties of sin are

taken away at the cross of jesus

christ

this is the fourth choice when we face

our heart of sin

god judges those who are presumptuous

but god gives salvation to the humble

bank

so admitting our sins and admitting that

we cannot overcome

our own sins

surrendering to god stop fighting

against god accepting his sovereign

rules

and relying on what god has done and

will do

to lead us in this way

and therefore this posture means

humility and submission to god is not

a surrender to our sins

we all have to face our own sinful

hearts sooner or later

people who emphasize god's grace tend to

presume

god judges those who presume on him but

god gives salvation to the humble

soon

i
