we're

continuing our series in the book of

micah

which so far has been filled with

judgment

sinclair

as you remember last week chapter 2 was

also about

judgment and presuming on god's grace

well guess what chapter 3 is also on

and it might be at this point where we

start feeling like the old testament is

very hard to read which is true at

points

[Music]

for

but just like a physician knows what the

patient needs to be healthy

god knows what we need better than we

ourselves do and so we want to go

through the entire word of god

because it's there

foreign

the bible is wiser than we are and we

want to filter our life through the

bible's wisdom

and we also believe that the bible is

god's primary way of talking to us today

so that being said let's not turn to

micah3 that was going to read it in thai

and both languages will be on the screen

know

oh

um

is

thanks though so

this chapter as we've just read is not

one that makes us feel good on the

inside

here

judgment and condemnation are being

proclaimed god is going to hide his face

and turn away from israel and jerusalem

is going to be destroyed

the question is what could have happened

to bring such a strong response

what would cause god to bring about such

judgment and possible destruction over

his own city

over the past few weeks we've looked at

the theme of justice and here is a

perfect example about what god thinks

about

injustice

this chapter shows us in great detail

what god's standards are for justice

as well as what god thinks about

it shows us the problem of injustice and

exploitation

it shows us the source of exploitation

and then it shows us the solution

so verse 1 verse 1 shows us that micah

is addressing the leaders and rulers of

israel

for neglecting justice

he says should you not embrace justice

you who hate good and love evil.

the leaders of israel are exploiting and

taking advantage of their own people

they failed to maintain the standards of

right and wrong

in fact they've reversed it the very

ones who are supposed to be upholding

justice and protecting their people are

the very ones who are committing robbery

in the worst way possible

micah says you tear the skin from my

people

and eat my people's flesh strip off

their skin break their bones into pieces

chop them up like meat for the pan and

flesh for the pot

this is very strong language he's saying

the leaders of israel are

eating their own people

in the bible the image of eating flesh

is often used to describe

oppression and that's the case here

the courts of justice were run by

officials who

impoverished their own community and

deprive the people of their legal rights

like butchers whose skin and bone

carcasses the government leaders prey on

their own people

economically judicially socially morally

hong kong

but the leaders are not alone micah goes

after the religious leaders too

the prophets whose duty it is to connect

the people to god to speak god's word to

the people they are the ones who are

leading them astray in verse 5.

not

tells us that they're motivated by their

own desires they proclaim good news to

those who pay them but to those who

don't

they wage war against them in other

words

their behavior depends on what they can

get out of it

the officials who are responsible for

upholding justice are the ones who

judge for a bribe verse 11 the priests

who are supposed to teach

do so for a price and those who are

supposed to speak god's word tell

fortunes for money

and the king has allowed all of this to

happen under his rule

hindi

there is no justice in israel only

corruption and greed

i'm sure we don't have to look very far

to see this is still the case today

injustice and exploitation are rampant

everywhere we see it in our own country

and in our neighboring countries the

problem that

israel experienced then still exists

today

so israel's leaders have failed them and

now we turn to the source

of injustice and exploitation

so verse 5 shows us that the motivations

of the prophets are self-centered

they proclaim peace if they have

something to eat but wage war against

anyone who refuses to feed them

they're seeking their own personal gain

their actions of injustice and

exploitation come from their posture

of selfishness and self-centeredness

and what's more verse 11 tells us that

they're looking for god's support

they think that god is on their side

while they break the very laws that he

put into place

like a jannaty said last week they're

presuming god's grace presuming his

approval

in other words they don't really care

about what god thinks rather they're

manipulating god

for their own gain

they're motivated by their own

selfishness which is just another way of

saying that they do not trust

they're using their own people and even

using god

for their own sake

like

and martin luther a theologian during

the 1500s

in his lectures on romans he says human

nature is so

deeply curved in on itself that it

wickedly curvedly and viciously seeks to

use

all things even god for its own sake

he's saying that self-centeredness is

the root of sin what

we can easily see that being the case in

our text for today

micah tells us that it is these leaders

are exceptionally cruel

and they're motivated out of a concern

for themselves

and we may think that us normal people

would never do anything like that

we would never allow such injustice to

happen we would never eat the flesh of

those who it's our responsibility to

protect

we aren't self-centered in that way but

the essence of self-centeredness

is not just the leaders being cruel and

bad martin luther says that it pervades

everything because it makes you

use everything

throughout history we've seen tyrants

you and we can call them self-centered

because they're doing things

bad things for their own gains

we can conclude self-centeredness is the

motivation for being bad for doing bad

things

but self-centeredness is also the

motivation for being good

for being moral for being nice for

giving your money away

there's no better way to get control of

other people than by being nice

and moral there's no better way to get

everybody to do what you want

than by being self-sacrificing and

loving that gun

deep down inside what we're doing when

we're helping people when we're

helping people we're actually using them

we're not completely doing it for their

sake we're doing it for our sake

and this is what luther is saying

here to go even further

religion in general is fueled by

self-centeredness

so generally how it works is i obey

scripture i go to church

i pray to god i help the poor see i help

the poor

and i expect results i expect answers to

prayer and blessings in my life

and when our prayers aren't answered

when life falls about

apart we may find ourselves saying i'm

praying i'm reading my bible

but life is falling apart what use is it

to be a christian

what use is it to be a christian if god

never

you see what may look like love for god

and god's people on the outside

may just be self-centeredness on the

if you give me this or if you fix my

marriage or my financial problems

i'll obey you if you give me this or

that what is on the other side of that

if is our real god and the god that

we're supposedly obeying

we're actually using him to get what we

want

but if you truly love someone why do you

do the things they want

you do it just to see the smile on their

face that's a reward all by itself

that's love

but paul in romans 3 says nobody loves

god for who god is

nobody obeys god out of love we all use

god to get what we want because

we believe that what we want will make

us okay

will make us whole will fix us

and if we use god and other people to

get what we want

we're no different to these leaders that

micah is talking to

me the selfishness of the heart

obstructs true justice because just like

the leaders are exploiting and taking

advantage of their people and god to get

what they want

we're doing the very same thing

but it just looks different because on

the outside we may look

better than these leaders we're not

killing anyone we're not

we're not obstructing justice but on the

inside our motives are the same

that things

we're all in the same boat we use god

and we use people to get what we want

to and that's contradictory to justice

because it's contradictory to god's

character who is the source of justice

the only way we can truly seek justice

and righteousness is if we do so out of

a genuine concern

for the other

young people

so we're left with israel who god

intended to be a light to the rest of

the world

being the furthest thing away from it

israel who was meant to be an example of

god's righteousness and justice to the

rest of the world

is not a good example

but the very worst example is

next slide please thank you

and because of their exploitation

because they've ignored

god's justice and righteousness because

they have not cared about god's word but

have used god to get what they want

as we see in verses four four and seven

god is going to cut himself

off from israel

from

because of their self-centeredness

because they've silenced god going as

god is going to be silent to them

they're going to cry out to god and he

will not answer them

because of the evil that they've done

that's completely fair and just right if

because they've refused to hear god

god is going to refuse to hear them

and what's more jerusalem god's own city

because of the leaders exploitation the

entire city is going to become a heap of

rubble

the city is going to be crushed the end

of micah's pronouncement

is judgment and destruction and

alienation from god

welcome

and if we're in that same boat because

of our own self-centeredness

we deserve the very same treatment if

we've turned away from god

then what we deserve is forgot to turn

away from us

i'm sure that's happened to us in our

relationships if someone ignores you

what do you do

okay you ignore me fine i'll ignore you

too somehow

someone ignores us so we choose to

ignore them because it feels very just

right

as we come to the end of this chapter

the question is

has god failed how is god going to keep

his promises

of establishing righteousness and

justice when the leaders of his own

the prophets the priests the judges the

king

when all of them have failed well not

moral

so jeremiah 26 18 and 19 tell us

that when micah preached this and said

the words in verse 12.

there was repentance and there was a

revival.

whenever

jeremiah is quoting micah 3 12 in the

highlighted verses

that's what it says in micah and what

happened is

king hezekiah repented after micah

brought this judgment he sought god

again

and god did not bring the disaster that

he promised he delayed it

preaching of judgment worked israel

repented

micah coming to the leaders and

preaching judgment was actually a sign

of god's mercy

god did not have to tell israel their

sin god could have just destroyed them

and that shows us that through micah god

was trying to get israel to see her sin

and wickedness

so that israel could wake up repent and

become liberated

through micah

m

if judgment was the end of the story

there would be no hope only death and

destruction

as this chapter shows us

but the whole bible shows us the lengths

that god would go

to seek us in love and to come near and

we know that he does so in jesus christ

jesus christ reverses all the failures

of israel's leaders

the leaders exploited and oppressed

their people but jesus has come to save

and liberate his people

how

the leaders hated good and loved evil

they didn't care about justice or

righteousness

but hebrews 1 tells us that jesus christ

will rule his kingdom

with a scepter of justice that in

contrast to the leaders

who loved evil and hated righteousness

jesus loves righteousness and hates

wickedness

the leaders and the prophets who were

supposed to declare

god's word ended up telling fortunes for

money out of self-centeredness

but jesus the true prophet the true

priest the true king was completely

selfless and obedient to god

jesus christ is the leader that we're

all searching for he is the answer to

our self-centeredness

he is the only king who will never fail

his people

how do we know that jesus will never

fail his people

because unlike the leaders who exploited

and took advantage of their own people

for their personal gain

jesus lays down his own life foreign

and he did so not out of

self-centeredness but selflessness

because when jesus was in the garden the

night before his crucifixion

he was sweating blood and agony and

knowing that he was on his way to die he

prayed

not my will but yours be done he was not

looking to himself he was looking to god

and they both knew that this was the

only way to save us

yes

the judgment spoke of of god turning his

face away from israel because of the

evil they done

well that actually happened

it happened in 586 bc

when the babylonians exiled israel and

jerusalem was crushed

but that wasn't the only time jerusalem

was crushed it was crushed again in 1870

but that wasn't the only time that it

would be crushed

the real forsaking and the real rescue

happened on the cross

when jesus was on the cross matthew

tells us that he cried out

my god my god why have you forsaken me

and there was nothing

wrong

jesus the true israel cried out to god

but god did not hear him

on the cross and god hid his face from

jesus jesus experienced god's silence

on the cross what happened the father

turned his face away

we're going to sing that later

on

not only that jesus the true israel was

also crushed

the consequences that were rightly meant

for us because of our self-centeredness

because we use god and we use people to

he took that punishment for us for you

and he did it out of love

that's only half of it on the cross god

treated jesus as we deserved

but that means that god can now treat us

as jesus deserves

god gives us his righteousness and now

we are god's precious possession

it says in first peter 2 that we are

god's most we are god's treasured

possession

which means that god looks at us and

says in jesus christ you are more

precious than all the jewels on the

earth

side

this fills the hole in our hearts that

we're trying to fill with our

do you believe that do you believe that

in your head do you believe that in your

heart

only that three days later jesus rose

from the grave

and hebrews 1 tells us that after

providing purification for sins

jesus sits down at the right hand of god

jesus the true leader is alive

and he's ruling with

when we trust god's love when we behold

the glory of jesus christ

the better leader and the true king

dying on the cross for us

it will free us from our

self-centeredness it fills the hole in

our hearts that we're seeking to fill

with other things

in jesus christ we find true contentment

and peace

and it's only then that we truly will be

able to have genuine concern for our

neighbors

and truly seek righteousness and justice

our father we thank you for your word

today we pray lord god that you would

help us

through your spirit to see our emptiness

and our self-centeredness

would you help us god to see our need

for you and then help us to experience

and to believe and to hold in our hearts

this truth

father we pray that you would help us to

look at jesus the one who is righteous

and just

would you give us the
