glad you're here this week

i wish i could say it's good to see you

but because of the way it's set up

i can't see any of you i'm just looking

into a camera

so you all can see me but i can't see

any of you guys

but in any case i'm glad that you're

here today

if any of us feel worn down stressed

overwhelmed

or worried by the things that have

happened this week

whether that's covid or other things

to know that you're not alone

[Music]

i think we all are longing for the day

when the pandemic passes

and we can gather it together again

foreign

and if any of us are feeling

particularly down today i pray that god

would meet us

as we turn to god's word today let's

bring with us this sense of longing

so we'll be going through micah 5 and

boss will be reading it

this week we'll be reading it in thai so

feel free to follow along on the screen

i right so

vicky will be reading it in thailand

thank you boss

so a lot of the legends of the world

are filled with stories that speak of a

great king

who used to rule and will one day come

back

when the good king is here everything is

okay but then the king is gone and

everything falls apart

and when will the king return

we see this theme is in books and

legends

and movies today

lord of the rings for example the third

installment being called

the return of the king.

another example is in c.s lewis's the

chronicles of narnia

as land the lion is the true king but

then he's gone

and narnia is plunged into winter

he means

the people are suffering they're dying

and in some cases even their world is

ending

and then the king steps in and rescues

the people

rescues the land and everything is made

okay again

and as we've been going through micah

these past few weeks we know that

is there is israel is not okay things

are not okay

in israel

we've talked about how the leaders are

failing the people

taking advantage of them we've talked

about the injustice and the exploitation

that the israelites faced

a country israel is in winter people are

suffering from corruption on the inside

because of this god is going to bring

judgment from the outside

so verse 1 gives us a picture of

humiliation

israel is going to be attacked and their

king will not be able to lift a finger

to defend himself

imagine the highest authority being

struck on the face

unable to defend himself

it's absolute humiliation

and history i can only imagine they'd be

thinking where is god

who promised them that they would be a

blessing to the whole world

it looks like now the whole thing is

about to be destroyed

and as we've seen they're in this

position because of their own rebellion

so they have gotten themselves into this

mess and there seems to be

no way out

but out of you will come for me one who

will be ruler over

israel whose origins are from

in the midst of darkness god brings

forth hope

which leads us to ask who is this king

what is he going to do

is he going to be like the previous

kings that have failed his people

so the text tells us that this king is

going to come from an unlikely place

one of the smallest clans in judah

bethlehem ephrathah was going to be the

clan out of which this king would come

on

now if you're expecting a king i would

imagine he would come from a place of

power and authority

now

it also tells us that this king is going

to come for god

out of you will come for me one who will

be ruler over israel before god

is in other words god's going to raise

for himself

a king one who is god's representative

this is in contrast to the current kings

in israel who as we've seen are taking

advantage of their own people

and what's interesting is in verse 4

we see that this king is also a shepherd

is

so what does a shepherd do

shepherd takes care of their sheep

but not only that a shepherd is in

charge

it's not a democracy in the ship pen

there's only one shepherd

a shepherd knows the needs of their

sheep and a large part of a shepherd's

job is

rescue work

this is because sheep have a tendency to

get lost

in fact the sheep will keep his nose to

the ground following the strip of

greenness grass little by little

separating them from the rest of the

flock until finally they're completely

out of sight

and the sheep

once the sheep is aware of this what do

they do they run seeking their way but

they don't know how to get home

a lost sheep by itself does not get home

the bible frequently refers to humans as

sheep as well

isaiah 53 for example says we all like

sheep have gone astray

and sheep do not go astray on purpose

they don't intend to wander away

i mean why would you leave your shepherd

but they're so caught up with something

that it leads them away from their true

shepherd

and tim keller points out that deep

within our hearts we all long for a

shepherd to come and care for our needs

and when we have problems we want to

know is there anyone out there who is

able to take care of us

is there someone who is going to make

everything right

is there someone who is going to bring

control in all my chaos

we're all looking for a shepherd but

where do we find one

huh now

some of us are looking for that in our

spouses whether we're married or single

some of us think that our parents and

families and kids are going to be the

one to take care of our needs

others look to our leaders

upon we all want somebody to be our

somebody or something that will

completely complete us and will make us

feel okay

and when we discover that none of these

people our spouse our families our

leaders

can truly meet our expectations we get

surprised

disappointed or even angry

with

some of us may have already been

disappointed

so we know that no one can be our

shepherds that everyone is going to let

us down

again so what do we do we look to

ourselves to be our own shepherd

there's a pretty famous poem by a

british poet named william ernest henley

and i'm sure you'll recognize the ending

it goes like this i am the master of my

fate and i am the captain of my soul

young

one of the problems with being your own

shepherd and there's many

but one of them is how do you know

you're qualified how do you know

that you are the best person for that

job

to do look at the israelites they wanted

to be their own shepherd

and that's the reason they're in this

mess to begin with

foreign when you look at children

and they ask for something let me have

all the chocolates

are you always going to give them what

they want

no of course not if a child was able to

get everything they wanted they'd be

dead in three hours

the difference between an adult and a

child

is nowhere near as wide as the

difference between us

if god created the world and if god

created us that means we were made for

something

the world isn't created if it's all

natural selection then there's no such

thing as meaning

then we're all a product of survival of

the fittest

but if god created us then we were made

for a purpose

we are created not to be our own lords

and saviors not to be our own masters

but to be completely obedient

to this king

and this king micah tells us will

shepherd his flock back to god and they

will live securely and at peace

see the pattern of the story things are

not okay in fact things are very bad

but a king will come and bring rescue.

so let's look at what the text says

about this ruler's kingdom

so this text is about the problems of

israel they're going to be attacked by

assyria

babylon and micah says it's all right

it's going to happen israel will be

abandoned

but a king will rise up

alone

and you might think okay this king is

going to deliver the israelites and make

them great against

but look at verse 4 they will live

securely for his greatness will reach

the ends of the earth

until his brothers will return to join

the israelites

with you young man

ethnic kingdom that goes to the ends of

the earth

the king is not only going to address

israel's problems but the needs of the

whole world

this king is going to get rid of all

evil and death all

injustice and poverty

the israelites were given a hope that

god would raise up a king in the future

but they did not know

next slide please

uh next slide please

sorry the clicker is not working for

some reason anyways they didn't know who

this king was going

because matthew in chapter 2 quotes

micah 5.

and says this king is jesus christ

there is a reason why we're moved by all

the myths and legends about a king who

is going to return

and that's because we know it's true

we know we are in need of being rescued

we know we are in need of a shepherd

what if i told you jesus christ is the

reality to which all these myths and

legends points

in the midst of darkness god sends his

son born in the most

unlikely place in a manger

um

he takes on the evil powers socially

culturally

spiritually

and finally on the cross it looks like

evil has defeated him but

now he's bringing together a band of

people renewing their lives and one day

he will renew the whole world

this is the king we are all after us

jesus christ is that beautiful prince

that your heart longs for when you read

those stories

he is the shepherd we've all been

searching for

and he jesus christ

is the king that god raised up not only

for the israelites but for the whole

world

and so what does that mean it means

three things

it means many things but we'll talk

about three

if jesus is your king it means we need

to see his sacrificial love

we don't submit to jesus's lordship by

just saying okay jesus you're more

powerful than me so i guess i have to

obey

surrender does not start by viewing

jesus's power first

it starts by viewing his sacrificial

love

from tells us that this king will

shepherd his people and in john 10 11

jesus says i am the good shepherd i lay

my life down for the sheep

me

because when you see jesus on that cross

for you you can say why would i not

trust someone who would go through all

that for me

why wouldn't i trust someone who would

go through all of that for me

how am i not he's a messiah and until

you are moved by his death and

sacrificial love you have not

begun to truly surrender to his lordship

jesus

jesus may be a lot of things to you but

he's not your king until you've made

this commitment

whatever he has said in his word you are

going to do

whether you understand it or whether you

like it

if you've made that commitment he is

king and you are not

if you haven't you are king and he is

not

but there's going to be times in our

life for some of us even now

where we don't like or are challenged by

what the bible says

and in those times we might feel tempted

to go back to being our own shepherds

but if jesus is truly your king then we

need to obey his word

whether we like it or not knowing

ultimately that it's good for us

to know

and micah may look disturbing god is

tearing down horses and chariots

cities idols and sacred stones this

looks disturbing

timeline

what god is doing is he is cleansing

israel

israel looked to these things to be

their shepherd this is what they trusted

god is bringing those down so that they

can trust in him

and of course it hurts it can feel like

a knife

but we know that this is not a dagger

it's a surgeon's knife making precise

cuts in order to heal

i would put him like that

god is performing radical surgery to rid

his people of the things that caused

them to stumble

and god on this with us too

but living with hope means that when

things don't go our way or as we had

wished we continue to trust god

when we worry we're basically saying i

know how the universe should run

i know how my life has to go i know what

needs to happen and i don't know that

god is going to do it right

but if jesus is our king and if he is

our shepherd then he knows what we need

and we can look to jesus and say you are

god you are the king.

knowing that god knows and god cares

are there things in your life you've

given up on are there people or

communities that you have given up on

missing

lord god we thank you for your word

today

we thank you for the relevance of your

word

lord we pray that through your holy

spirit you would help us to see

your sacrificial love for us on the

cross and would that move us to

obedience

and to love lord we can't do this on our

own we can't do this by our own strength

and so we plead

for mercy lord that you have already

given to us

lord would you allow us to experience

the gospel not only in our heads but in

our hearts as well

and give us what we need lord god for

today and for this week

jesus name
