afternoon everyone

uh if you will open your bibles to micah

chapter 6.

today we continue with micah's prophecy

to god's people

and there's a lot to wrestle with in

this text

and this chapter opens with a court

scene and yahweh

is calling his wayward people to answer

for their unfaithfulness to the covenant

and in that this is a court scene it

should truly grab

our attention this is god pleading with

his people and accusing them

and us actually of spiritual

adultery and then sternly warning them

of the consequences of that adultery

thank

however as we will see micah 6

and even the warnings in micah 6 are

full of mercy this chapter is an

invitation

to return to god

god

and also this chapter should serve as a

mirror for us

and for our own hearts and souls

so in the midst of this accusation

warning god asked this

question of his people how have i

wearied you and this is the main

question that i want us to wrestle with

today

today i only have two points to wrestle

with this question

and the first one is weary or tired of

the second one is the cure for weariness

so let's have someone read the text

in thai if you if you are an english

speaker please follow along

they're going to be the whole chapter in

thai you can follow along in your

english bibles please

foreign

the

[Music]

um

my

but we are so thankful for your

fatherhood

that you are a tender loving father

who loves us in spite of our

forgetfulness

who loves us in spite of the way that we

run

help us have mercy on us

show us how to return to you well

help us to look in the mirror of micah 6

and see the ways that we have grown

tired

of you and help us to grow tired not of

you but of our little idols our little

gods

and help us to return to you and we ask

all this in your name

amen

oh sorry i'm preaching in english sorry

so first of all

tired of god

so the role of a prophet in the old

testament in new zealand too is actually

like that of a prosecutor

so god calls the prophet to come and

confront his people

with their breach of contract or their

breach of the covenant

and in this case micah is the lawyer the

prosecutor who stands before judah

to bring god's case against them

and in verses one and two micah calls

out

listen to what the lord says stand up

plead my case before the mountains let

the hills hear what you have to say

hear you mountains the lord's accusation

listen

you everlasting foundations of the earth

for the lord

has a case against his people

he is lodging a charge against israel

and he calls these ancient covenant

witnesses the mountains

and the hills to hear yahweh's charge

against his people

so and this would have definitely

grabbed the attention of

any jew in that day god through micah

was using

covenant language language that he used

way back in deuteronomy through moses

so three times in deuteronomy god is

entering into covenant

as god is entering the covenant with his

people israel he warns them

about idolatry waywardness and spiritual

adultery

and each of those times he calls upon

the mountains and the hills

or the heavens and the earth to stand

witness to the promise

of retribution if his people break

covenant

control so this is

serious it is a dire warning

even even comes until not glue

and so then god asked the this

penetrating question

my people what have i done to you

how have i burdened you answer me

and then before bringing his warning he

challenges

his people to consider and to answer his

charges and then in verse four four and

five he

illustrates his own faithfulness to

israel throughout history

and foreign

but you see the main charge against

judah against god's people right here

is this they have grown

to the worldly people of judah

the worship of and devotion to yahweh

has become

a burden it's something they've grown

out of they've moved

past and they're bored with it

and they decided that god is no longer

enough for them

and that and as niron preached last week

chapter 5 shows that they've gone after

other gods actually

since then

and then in verse 16 the lord accuses

judah with this you have observed the

statutes of omri

and all the practices of ahab's house

you have followed their traditions

so in other words they become just as

evil

just as treacherous and idolatrous as

the two

most evil kings in the history of israel

and

and it's actually this that gives us a

pretty good clue about how they grew

so after swearing covenant allegiance

with god

israel continually forgot

what god had done for them and they

began to covet

or want the other gods of the nations

around him

well for one thing these other gods

don't

talk back they didn't condemn

self-worship and justice and cruelty to

the way that yahweh did

and there's a lot of money and power to

be had when your god

isn't concerned with these things when

he's not concerned about human dignity

and generosity

and true justice

so you see god isn't accusing his people

of being irreligious

there's plenty of evidence here that

they still wanted to be very religious

so it's just that they wanted a religion

that would cater to their true idols to

to the true gods of their hearts

so what they were tired of is belonging

to

god alone they were tired of forsaking

worldly sinful pleasures that the

nations around them enjoyed

upholding justly uh justice when it was

costly they were tired of a god

who demands complete allegiance

so they were tired of yahweh they were

tired of god and they

longed for religion and the first five

verses are god's speech to his

people and in verses 6 and 7

the people themselves respond so listen

to this response

this is the people of israel or the

people of judah with what shall i come

before the lord and bow down

before the exalted god shall i come

before him with

burnt offerings with calves a year old

will the lord be pleased with

thousands of rams with tens of thousands

or ten thousand rivers of olive oil

shall i offer my firstborn

for my transgression for the fruit of my

the fruit of my body for the sin of my

soul

so do you hear what they really wanted

they wanted a transaction

they wanted a vending machine god they

wanted religion and nothing else they

wanted to pay god

off

what they wanted was for god to just

tell them what he wants

so that he they could just meet his

demands

and then go about their business what

they wanted was religion

without heart change

they wanted a god who would become like

them

who would accommodate their own sin so

listen to verse 10 and 11.

am i this is god speaking am i

still to forget your ill-gotten

treasures

your wicked house and the short efa

which is accursed shall i acquit someone

with dishonest scales with a bag of

false weights

so god was asking them a question that

needed no answer

of course he would not and could not

become like the other gods of the other

nations

the question that he asked was meant to

point out the idolatry

in the hearts of his people sometimes

so these are the same kind of people

that jesus spoke up when he said

these people honor me with their lips

but their hearts

are far from me

but

and isn't this the real problem for all

of us

hasn't this been the issue for all of

history

we want a god who will let us remain

devoted

to our idols who will never cross

us and who will ultimately let us be our

own

like judah and israel before them we are

prone

to this transactional religious approach

to god

what we want to do is just do enough to

keep god

happy so that we can just live our lives

without him

like judah in these verses we want to

know what the rules are that so that we

can keep them the steps that we have to

take

and the tasks that we have to do to make

leave us alone so that we can just chase

our own

other real gods

this really should be a mirror for us we

should read and hear these words and

then

chew on them and meditate them meditate

on them and then

see how we have grown tired of god

nikoi

how did israel get here what are the

steps of becoming

tired of god what are the symptoms so

the steps i

i just thought of a couple much like

judah and israel we are easily seduced

by the world we want the momentary

in the moment pleasure that sin gives us

like judah and israel we forget

as long as we have the things that make

us happy as long as our idols are cared

for

we forget god and with enough forgetting

we end up forsaking god

and then much like judah and israel

we only crowd to god when we have

nothing else when our when our idols

have failed us

our little gods have failed us and then

we're desperate in fact tell me

that you've never said this god if you

do

and then fill in the blank then i'll

never

fill in the blank again so god if you do

this

i'll never do this again or god if you

give me

this then i'll promise to this

so what are some of the symptoms of

being tired of god tell me if you've

don't tell me but just see if you have

experienced some of these

is reading scripture ever a chore

a duty not a joy anymore

prayer it's infrequent or it never

happens

and you don't even really want to pray

do you try to bargain you try to bargain

with god to pay him off

while protecting your own favorite idols

or this being with god's

people is that a low priority

is that is that lower than your hobbies

your sleep

your job etc etc

does this sound like your life or parts

of your life

even have you exchanged the true god

to worship little gods like food

or sex or online gaming or comfort

or romance or whatever

they like

sex game online

well being tired of god first of all

it's not rare it's not something that

can't happen to true christians

and it's dangerous because at the end of

chapter 6 after

pleading after warning god tells his

unrepentant people therefore

i will give you over to ruin

and your people to derision and you will

bear the scorn of the nations

monkeys

and one of the realities one of the

scary realities that god gives

micah or that god gives us through micah

is that

as we see in this passage he is patient

and he is tender

and he is even pleading in his warnings

to his people but there comes a time

when he allows us to reap what we have

sewn

and this message runs with urgency

throughout the scriptures

calling us calling us to come back to

return to god

to not allow our hearts to be hardened

by sin

and doubt and calling us to cling to

christ

brothers and sisters it is normal to be

tired of god from time to time it's

normal to struggle it's normal to doubt

but let's be careful

because being tired of god weary of god

this was the accusation with which god

charged his people

and it was this weariness with god

that ultimately brought ruin to the

kingdom of judah

and it will bring ruin to our souls

so that's dark let's move on to the cure

for weariness

so hopefully you've just looked into

some of the darkest

parts of your soul and hopefully you'll

continue to do that

but i want us to know that with this

darkness with this warning

in this passage comes a

wide open invitation to mercy we know

that the big picture of our faith is

that the lord

redeems and restores

so the question we want to think through

right now is in light of the knowledge

that our hearts are prone to grow weary

with god is this how

do i cure this weariness

and when we find ourselves weary of god

or tired of god

weary of the fight and just wanting to

break free and

follow our hearts what do we do

we look to the cure

and i want to propose three solid cures

given in this passage

one listen to

remember and three returns

so first of all listen the prophet

starts these the two major sections of

this chapter with the command to

listen he's calling us to listen to what

the lord is saying

is bringing the word of the lord to his

people

and the god who created all things and

all people and the sensible thing

to do is just listen

and this message that he brings is this

this is the god who will

not change this is the god who will not

stop pursuing you and this is the god

who will not allow

evil to triumph god will not

simply stand aside and let and be

used as a prop for our sin and our

idolatry

the message is also this my people

you ignore me you forget me

and you continue in unfaithfulness at

your own

peril

and so we listen to the hard messages of

scripture we meditate on them and we

hold this mirror

up to our own faces and we see where

we are in danger

but another way that listening to god's

words is a cure for the

our weariness with god is that when we

listen to this message we see

hope and we see promise and mercy

so first of all listen to the way that

god addresses his people in this passage

in the beginning of this lawsuit god

says

my people what have i

done to you and then in verse 5

my people remember

or

he doesn't say listen you worthless

sinners

he says

so this is a tender pleading voice

of a father crying out to his children

this call is dripping

with god's mercy to his people they've

been saying

unwanted video

the lord calls out to the city this evil

city and he warns them of the danger

that is coming

we shouldn't miss just how loving this

warning

is

going to make

if god didn't love his people he if he

weren't longing to pour out his mercy

his grace on them

he would never warn them he would just

pour out

his wrath on them and be done lethal

so if we listen we're going to hear

of a god who pursues us we'll encounter

a god

who will not stand aside and let you and

i

kill ourselves with our own idolatry

if we listen we're going to learn of a

holy god who has made

a way to come to him

like

so as the lord himself says he who has

ears to hear

let him hear

secondly if we want to be cured of our

weariness with god

we've got to remember

so in his charge of judah he asked this

question

what have i done to you how have i

wearied you

and then he lays out his past saving

work

his people of his own covenant

faithfulness with these words

i brought you up out of egypt and

redeemed you from the land of slavery i

sent

moses to lead you and also aaron and

miriam my people

remember remember what balak the king of

moab plotted and what balaam the son of

beor answered remember

your journey from shittim to gilgal that

you may

know the righteous acts of the lord

so after charging his people with

growing tired of him

he then calls them to remember

and in doing this he he lays a

foundation for repentance

and he says that this foundation is

remembering

what god has already accomplished for

mainly we are forgetful people like

niron preached last week we're sheep

we're easily distracted we're constantly

listening to other voices to our own

sinful hearts and to the messages of the

world

and god's tender and patient response

to this is to point us back to point us

back to what he's done

he reminds us that he is the redeemer

the rescuer who saved their entire

nation he reminds them that

he is the one who sends help and

guidance he reminds us

that he is the one who has intervened

throughout history on their behalf

and so what about us all of those things

still hold true for us

but then there's much much more

painting

what an amazing thing for us to live on

this side of the cross

where we know that god himself has come

down in the flesh

he's redeemed us he's intervened on our

behalf

and now he has sent his holy spirit to

dwell in us

this is what jesus meant when on the

night that he was betrayed

he took the bread and the wine and he

said do this

often and when you do what

remember me remember

you see unless we remember these things

unless we remind ourselves of these

things unless we abide in them

we will grow tired of god my wife

and then instead of listening to god

we'll listen to our

own deceitful hearts and to the world

around us

and then we'll be seduced by little gods

that don't satisfy us

and that's ultimately what happens to

all

who don't listen to those who forget

like and god leaves them to pursue those

little gods money sex power status etc

and as verse 13

and 15 tell us they will eat and they

won't be satisfied

they'll store up but they'll have

nothing and they will plant

but not harvested

in other words unless we listen

unless we remember our lives will be

marked by futility and fruitfulness

and finally god calls us to return

and here we're going to focus mostly on

verse 8.

and after judah's ridiculous response to

the charges in verse

in verses 6 and 7 god gives them a

simple yet powerful solution to the

problem

says he has shown you o mortal what is

good

and what does the lord require of you

to act justly and to love mercy

and to walk humbly with your god

superman

he has shown you so this isn't new

information

god hasn't changed the rules all of a

sudden

and really all of scripture deals with

the heart see god wants the

hearts of his people not just rule

followers

so part of curing this weariness with

god is just to return to what god

commands it of us and there's a

simplicity here

that is life-giving and reviving to the

weary

looks

one of paul's concerns with the

corinthian church is that they had let

the world

false gospels and even their own

hardheartedness draw them away from

their sincere and pure devotion

to christ christ

and there's a simplicity throughout the

scripture that god calls us to he

invites he pleads

he stands ready to welcome all who will

simply

come to me all

you who are weary and heavy laden

kambancha

and this is the same kind of simplicity

that yahweh

calls his people to in this passage

and what he's saying is this isn't a

religious problem this isn't about how

many

sacrifices you make this isn't this is

an invitation about

coming back to me embracing me

following me and seeking for your heart

to become

one with mine

and notice what the commands are the

commands are act

justly love mercy

and walk humbly with your god but notice

where they fall

they fall after a recounting of god's

saving work

from

this is kind of like in the book of

romans or pretty much any book of paul

where he

he lays out this amazing beautiful

theology

of how god saved us

not how we saved ourselves but how god

saved us and from there he says

in chapter 12 in view of the mercies of

and then

and when god is calling his people to

return he's saying first

listen listen to me second remember

what i've done and then returned

try and once we've listened to these

warnings

and to these invitations to mercy once

we've remembered

what he's done and then we're ready to

return

because our hearts have been softened

he says to his people act justly be fair

don't treat people differently

because their status or race treat all

people with dignity and respect

and then he says love mercy so this

hebrew word is a big one

it can be translated loving kindness

covenant faithfulness mercy love

hero

and what it means is to to give

and give and give when nothing is

deserved

it means that we seek to outdo each

other in showing kindness and generosity

and honor

and it means if we love mercy

the world will watch you and i and they

will think

they are absolutely crazy

and both of these commands to act justly

and to love mercy

clearly reflect the character of god in

the midst of a world that craves power

money and status

and then finally he commands us to walk

humbly with our god

god is the king he's the lord of his

people he's the creator of us

and of all things

walking humbly with god is just a deep

recognition of these truths it is a

lifelong pursuit of keeping god as the

center of our devotion

and love and seeking how we can bring

him glory

and so when we find ourselves tired of

we need to listen to his word to the

and to the tender invitations to come

we need to remember that he is the

redeemer and that

though our own hearts continually seek

to betray us

he will not let us go laugh

or like

and then we need to return we need to

come back again

and again because you and i will fall

again

and again we need to come back to him

long long

so just like we sang earlier

come ye sinners poor and wretched weak

and wounded sick and

sore jesus ready stands to save you

full of pity joined with power

combat

so let's bow our heads and pray hello

thank you father that you are a god who

pursues his people

even through their sin we are so

grateful for this

we ask that you would drive this deep

into our hearts

we ask this in
