pray

father in heaven we thank you so much

for the opportunity today to look at

your word in the book of habakkuk

father we pray that you would in your

grace

give us hearts

that are full of fear and trembling to

understand who you are

more and more and father in your grace

that you would give us

hearts that are full of fear and

trembling

to look at those things in ourselves

that we wish not to look at

that we might put away and pretend

that's not there that you would work in

us to save us from ourselves

in jesus name we pray amen

okay

so

the context of today's passage is that

israel

god's chosen people is facing an

unpleasant

in fact it's more than unpleasant it's

catastrophic

after bearing with israel's rebellion

for so long god's patience has run out

god will punish israel for her

unfaithfulness and the consequences are

devastating

israel will be utterly destroyed and

god's people taken into exile

and so what happens in this passage then

might seem quite unexpected

for it's a series of taunts from israel

the oppressed towards babylon the

oppressor

the very same oppressor which god has

used to punish the oppressed

ki

it might seem unexpected because in the

midst of god's punishment

what a good good night

by his word of judgment on babylon but

given to israel

and what we see in verses 6 to 17 is

that the shame and suffering that

babylon has inflicted on others will be

brought back and done to them

because in god's righteousness because

of god's sovereignty god's punishment of

babylon means that god's punishment of

israel is limited

i'm not done

mercilessly oppress israel indefinitely

for god will judge babylon's empire

building efforts

and so this gives israel hope that one

day god will remember mercy

and in addition to this israel is not to

think babylon's empire building success

means that babylon's god has triumphed

over yahweh

babylon

israel is not to doubt the lord's

sovereignty israel

as we ourselves might tempted to do when

we see the wicked prosper

oh when those who profess the name of

jesus is are ridiculed and persecuted

but god in his mercy reveals history in

advance to reassure his people

that god's kingdom not babylons is the

kingdom which will prevail forever

since it by itself is self-destructive

by its own design for its based on the

pursuit of idols

and

and how is it self-destructive

well it's self-destructive because

babylon's empire building is never

enough it's insatiable

to empower

the more they have the more they want to

have it

based on greed violence injustice

is that it's fundamentally based on

idols

idols which are speechless unable to

teach

lifeless

and what's the other reason that god's

kingdom and not babylons will prevail

well the other reason is one that we've

already seen through god's judgment of

judgment of babylon we know that god is

the living god the one who is life the

one who sustains a life tonight

on you who can't

but although this is the truth

if we were to be honest with ourselves

without god our natural inclination is

to exchange this truth for lies

because ultimately it's more than just

the wooden stone metal images that we're

surrounded by everywhere we go

because standing behind all these idols

whether seen or unseen

is one in whom we are naturally inclined

to cherish

by which we seek to secure our own

comfort and convenience

tools by which we seek to secure our own

status and reputation

our own control and independence

and so we devote ourselves for

authority in direct opposition to god's

authority

so that we're able to do what we want to

do

to do what's right in our own eyes

without anyone judging us for it

living as though god didn't exist at all

and for those whom god has called into

his family by faith in christ jesus

christ

we know that it's only by his grace that

we're no longer ignorant of god's

and so i want to suggest today that the

struggle for us particularly is perhaps

not so much living as the god didn't

exist

although it's sad to say that at times

this is also the case

but perhaps our struggle is living as

though

we can serve god and still be devoted to

ourselves at

and of course this is what israel was

also guilty of

and like israel our struggle probably

has more to do with the fact that we

want to live in both kingdoms

our struggle is that we still to some

degree want to exercise our own

we still want to be kings over our

in taking god's opinion into a part of

our life where we still want to exert

control over la luna

how much high energy

neglect taking god's opinion into a part

of our life where we still want our own

independence

we know when we avoid when we're not

careful when we reject god's opinion

into a part of our life where we still

want

and so the consequence is that we're

unable to apply his word

to allow his sovereignty in that area of

our lives in that area of who we are

today

and so as it it's as though there's a

room in our house that we don't want to

let god into

me

it's as though there's some closets that

we don't want to open for god to see

me like

and of course there are many

patterns but one symptom of our desire

to determine

what is right in our own eyes

let alone to take responsibility and

especially at the cost of exposing our

weakness exposing our shame exposing

our embarrassment

on

and which in the end exposes our

prideful dependence of wanting to save

face above all costs

to admit our faults and to seek his

forgiveness in christ

and so we can live having a foot in both

kingdoms

we might even convince ourselves that

into thinking that we can actually live

in both kingdoms

we might rationalize this distortion by

persuading ourselves that we're still

serving god

how can

well one of the ways we can do this is

when we seek to do the bare minimum for

god singing

sing like

we want to be generous towards god

but we shrink back when we have to

suffer for it

we want to be good stewards of the

environment which god has entrusted to

us

but not so much when it impinges on our

convenience of using single-use plastic

like a moment of concentration

pursuit

is inherently self-destructive and those

who choose to do so are destined for

destruction

one computer game that rose to

popularity in the early 1990s

the aim of the game was to save these

small purple creatures called lemmings

from aimlessly falling to their doom

lava pit or off the edge of a cliff or

from other some other danger

but without your help these creatures

would inevitably follow each other to

their deaths

we're all on a path destined for

peanut but in some ways we're actually

much worse than these lemmings

because unlike them

we in fact do have a choice

but yet given this choice we would

choose ourselves and consequently our

own destruction

not only for someone to save us from

ourselves from this path of

self-destruction we're all on

demand

but there's also a need that for god's

kingdom to prevail

there must be a king

who won't seek after himself

to do this for us to do that which we

could never do on our own

and that this king would be willing and

able to save us from ourselves

blessed be the lord god almighty then

for because of god's incredible love and

mercy for us

in jesus these two needs are perfectly

fulfilled

forever

for jesus is both the king who perfectly

seeks after god and the one who saves us

from ourselves

giving himself completely in perfect

submission to god's plans for redemption

which require him to suffer the

humiliation on the cross

jesus is the one who saves us from

ourselves

from giving himself

in accordance to god's will he has

opened the way for establishing god's

kingdom

god's kingdom building is not achieved

through oppression or violence inflicted

to others

but achieved through oppression and

violence inflicted on

who would otherwise choose to live for

themselves

brings us into the kingdom he himself is

building so that we don't need to build

our own

that by his spirit we're united with

christ to be raised on the last day when

christ returns

into an internal kingdom where all of

creation we will acknowledge christ as

lord house

where he will rule with perfect justice

and righteousness

can you see that god that the kingdom

god is building is so much better than

what we could ever build ourselves

and so as difficult as it is to be

letting go of our own little kingdoms

and seeking after god's kingdom

be encouraged that it's all worthwhile

keep persevering because ultimately

we're letting go of what is perishing

and holding on to what will prevail

be encouraged when you endure suffering

for letting go of what is perishing

for the kingdom we're being prepared for

will endure forever

to choose self-denial over selfishness

to choose to forgive over harboring

resentment

to choose to love

even when it hurts

so that in all this we would choose

god's glory instead of our own

and as hard as it is be encouraged when

people ridicule you on account of jesus

remember

that those who ridicule us ridicules the

one who stands for us

the one who will indeed sweep the things

of this world

what is a major quad auto thing

by writing teams all that is based on

speechless lifeless idols away out

on you

when finally the earth will be filled

with knowledge of the glory of the lord

as the waters cover the sea

so let us renew our love and devotion to

our lord jesus christ

to be reminded that we cannot profess to

take part in his kingdom and yet at the

same time be quietly building and

nurturing our own

genuine repentance does not turn from

one sin while safeguarding others

loyalty to god in selective areas is no

longer loyalty

to repent of disloyalty in select areas

while preferring disloyalty in others

is no repentance at all

god does not ask us to give us this or

that idol while permitting us to nurture

several others

he demands rather that we abandon

idolatry itself and return to the god

against whom we have so greatly rebelled

therefore let us examine our hearts to

ask the lord to open the eyes of our

hearts and to ask ourselves the question

how am i still living in two kingdoms

let's take a minute to reflect in silent

reflection to answer this question

and once we've reflected for a moment

i'll then pray to the one who is able

and willing to save us from ourselves

let

lord for your grace

to us in the lord jesus christ

father we thank you so much

that he is the one

who has gone before us

and chosen to seek after you

and not himself

father please help us and encourage us

to admit

those areas in our lives in who we are

that we're we are still refusing

to bring ourselves under your

sovereignty

father help us to look back at the cross

and see what god that what christ has

saved us from

and father we pray that you would help

us to remind us of your word that we

would recall your word as easily as we

recall our own names

that we would bring your opinion into

each and every situation

that in this we would give you the
