right today we're going to be

looking at micah 4 so if you have your

bibles handy and you should if you're at

home particularly open up to micah 4.

and micah as we have seen in previous

weeks is a book that is heavy

with god's judgment and coming wrath

but today we're going to see a different

a very different side of micah maybe the

softer side of micah

hannah

and so the passage that we're looking at

today micah 4

has some warning for god's people it is

one of the most glorious and hope

and although micah 4 is rich enough for

us to study for weeks and weeks and

weeks as energy says we only have about

30 minutes

so but it is simple enough that we can

benefit from a quick survey of what god

has done and what god has given us in

this chapter

and today as we look at mayaka we're

going to look at it through these three

lenses

[Music]

first is coming glory

yeah

and so before we before we look into

this before we dive into this i want to

have nombi read and thai

and you can follow along in english in

your own bible if you need to

be

foreign

first of all let's look at coming glory

coming glory

in the last book of the lord of the

rings the hobbit samwise gamji

wakes up

after nearly dying on this quest

to

destroy the evil ring of power

the lord of the rings

hamlet when jimmy fallon

and he wakes up clean and safe

and he's well cared for in the castle in

the king's castle and after weeks of

hopeless dreary

dark travel with constant danger

he finds that the ring has been

destroyed his mission is completed

and as he wakes up everyone around him

starts telling him what has happened he

finds out that the dark lord sauron has

fallen

he finds that his friends have all made

it to the kingdom

and even finds that their guide and

their friend gandalf has come back from

the dead

and then he asked this beautiful

question

he says is everything sad coming untrue

and i think this is where we find

ourselves in micah 4 right now

after three chapters of judgment and

doom god tenderly meets his people where

they need

and as we meditate on these first seven

verses particularly these first seven

verses of micah 4 god shows us a picture

of what our world will look like when

everything sad comes untrue

and in verse 1 he takes us out of this

present reality of distress

that his people face

out of this present reality of injustice

and wickedness

and into a truly glorious future

and he says

this phrase it shall come to pass

in the latter days

well more on the what these latter days

are and what they mean later but i want

you to just know that you are in them

right now

the prophets like micah spoke of these

days and days yet to come and they

longed for these days

so just hold that in the back of your

mind we are in the latter days

and first of all i want us to look at

this

passage particularly the first five

verses one through five and chapter four

are tied directly

chapter three 3 9-12.

and it's important we see this because

god through micah is contrasting

himself

to those wicked

leaders that niran preached about a few

weeks ago

so notice just a few of these contrasts

in 310 zion is a city built with blood

and iniquity by the unjust leaders

of

in chapter 4 verse 2 zion is the

dwelling place of the lord that

overflows with justice and righteousness

but he sees

in 312 the mountain of zion

is a heap of rubble it's diminished it's

brought low

because of the wicked rulers

in 4 1 the mountain of the lord is

established as the highest of all the

mountains

in chapter 3 verse 11 these wicked

rulers they preach for personal gain

they bribe

knowledge

wisdom

justice

they're freely given lovingly given by

the lord himself

and god wants you to see what he's doing

here

he is saying i am the only one who is

righteous and faithful and able to rule

you

practice

and in chapter 3 micah is showing us the

fruits of when a society forgets and

forsakes the lord

and the beautiful thing is he sets this

picture the wicked rulers right next to

this picture of what it looks like when

yahweh

rules his people so he takes this

picture what it looks like when wicked

rulers rule and then he sets it right

next to the very same picture of the

very same city of when yahweh rules his

people and have

and out of this darkness and doom

what do the latter days look like

really it's it's the picture it's a

picture of the world that we all long

for ben

ben party

i'm not going to read it but i'm just

going to go through it as nations the

nations of the world living in peace

flowing into the presence of god himself

it's all the peoples of the world all

the nations of the world

learning wisdom from god the god who

loves them

so

it's each of us living in peace

no fear

completely unthreatened by anything

happy joyful for the first time healthy

and it's a world where war is made

obsolete and there is no more injustice

now imagine with me and i can't imagine

this what it would have been like to

live under these wicked rulers and to

hear micah 4.

when all you see around you is darkness

and gloom and injustice and you're just

waiting for yahweh to act

what a sweet

life-giving word this must have been to

those

the remnant those faithful who are still

waiting for god to act

because all they saw was injustice all

they saw was evil and it seemed that

evil was winning

are you ever weary because of sin

whether it's your sin or whether it's

the sin around you it's sent against you

you in the middle of a pandemic in a

crazy city like bangkok do you ever long

for uninterrupted peace

what micah is saying is look ahead

look forward

mikha

maybe you've noticed

that the the similarities between micah

4 and revelation 21 and 22.

and micah saw all of this stuff from a

much greater distance than we do

and he longed for this day

but brother and sister jesus himself has

given you access to this

mountain

next let's look at divine mission

so often when we think of the word

mission or missionary we think of people

maybe we think of good people holy

people hard working people maybe we

don't

make it

sometimes we hear preachers say

everybody's a missionary

we hear sermons telling us to be salt

and light urging us to share the gospel

with our neighbors and friends

and we have church campaigns that that

urge us to reach the nations for christ

yes but the overwhelming focus of micah

4 is this

god

is the one who is active god is the one

who accomplishes this vision that we

just saw

in the first seven verses

in uh verse one it's yahweh himself that

establishes zion and lifts it up

higher than the other mountains

it's god that makes zion mount zion the

center of justice of power of worship

and it's god that draws the nations up

to the mountain to the presence of

and we even hear echoes of this in jesus

words that and i when i'm lifted up from

the earth will draw all people to myself

it's also god that teaches the nations

and he judges the nations in verses two

and three causing his ways to be known

bringing peace bringing true peace and

justice to the nations

and then in verse 4 he verifies it the

mouth of the lord has spoken

so this word that we're just reading

that we just walk through tells us that

this vision that we're reading about

isn't just a vision it's not just a hope

it is an

unbreakable promise and that god himself

will accomplish it and has already

started to accomplish this

and so when we think of this mission in

this passage we think of god himself

this is god's mission

but i do want us to see

he uses us who god uses and how he uses

them is important

notice he talks about the nations

particularly in verses one two and four

and five all the peoples of the earth

strong nations far away

it looks more like grace city where you

have chinese and american and australian

and thai

city

from australia

i want you to look at how he does this

he draws them up he teaches them his

ways

and then what does he do

it says for out of zion shall go forth

the law and the word of the lord from

jerusalem

in other words he draws them up he

teaches them and then he sends them back

down

taught by god on mission

two

and even the flavor of this verse is is

that the nations are calling the nations

to come up to yahweh

like

thank you

i'm riffing a little bit she's doing a

great job

the second

thing or the second group that god uses

in this passage is the remnant

so out of israel itself he takes the

lame

he takes the weak he takes the ones who

have been cast off

on

the lame the weak

the cast off

to build his kingdom on earth

this mission is god's eternal plan this

is his eternal plan to bring cosmic

restoration

to draw all of the nations of the earth

to himself

below

he uses

the unclean nations

to me this sounds like the one who is

gentle and lowly who calls the weary and

heavy laden

brothers and sisters you and i are

called we're invited to join

the mission of yahweh himself

the god who took on flesh

the one who became weak in order to

accomplish this mission that you and i

never could accomplish

you and i are actually invited to join

to share in the victory that we see in

verses one through seven we are invited

to go up the mountain

higher

so we're going to look at the last part

of this passage and we'll look at

present suffering

and we're not going to read it again but

in verses 9 through 13 micah brings us

back to the present

remember in verses one through seven

he's and and even a little bit of eight

he's pointing us forward and he's saying

look ahead look at what's coming

he says there's glory coming and he said

and he shows us what god is doing to

accomplish his mission

how she hates

and after he strengthens them

strengthens their hearts with this

picture and strengthens us with this

picture

he brings us

back to the present distress and tells

them about the fire that they're going

to have to pass through

he tells them they're going to face

exile

exposure to their enemies and opposition

they're going to be cast out of their

cities they're going to be cast out of

their homes

they're going to be a wandering people

again they're going to be strangers in a

strange land they're going to be exiled

and even this remnant the faithful ones

are going to walk through this fire

israel

but even in god's call to suffering even

in his

promise that there will be suffering

he brings hope

if we look at this passage we see it's

it's at the point of all this suffering

in exile

that's where his mercy comes

from

verse 10 there you shall be rescued in

babylon there you shall be rescued and

there the lord will redeem you the very

point of their suffering that's where

they'll be rescued

and all throughout this passage micah

uses this image of a pregnant woman

groaning writhing in pain which is a

fitting picture

but i have been present

for the birth of both of my children

and my wife is currently

pregnant

and i've seen the pain that comes i've

seen the pain that is a part of that

and from what i can tell it is truly

horrible pain debilitating but

debilitating

and really

in many places in scripture it's this

image of a pregnant woman agonizing in

labor that's used to talk about

suffering in the kingdom

of god

the reason why

is uh sleeping on the couch outside

my little boy

or my little girl right there that's the

reason there is hope and there is

promise of joy that comes in this kind

of suffering

no wonder this imagery is used to talk

about the suffering in the kingdom the

suffering of a believer

even micah's warning of suffering even

his promise that you will suffer

is

full of hope

but even so as i was reading this

passage i kept thinking

can we just go back to the mountain

can we just get back to the mountain

that's where i want to be

done

the answer is no

absolutely not no

not yet

not without going through the present

distress not without going

through the suffering

at the end of this passage he uses a

funny picture a kind of a strange way of

saying it god intends to judge or thresh

the nations

and he intends us to be a part of that

they don't know the plan of the lord

they don't know the god of psalm 2 who

laughs at opposition

they don't see the vision of christ on

the white horse coming to judge them

and part of the means of that threshing

part of the means of that judgment

is you and i

and that sounds strange it sounds a

little harsh so how does that happen

in our gospel

speaking

in our good deeds and our sharing of our

stuff and our living justly and humbly

in our living counter-cultural

god-centered god-loving lives in the

midst of

hard times

the world is confronted with something

they don't understand

how

when he says rise up o daughter of zion

and thresh

that's what he means this threshing is

living where we shine light into

darkness

and either the world responds

with repentance

or rejection

they look at the topic

and lastly suffering is the way to the

if you think about it there was a

mountain of the lord in the old

testament

the old testament saints the people of

israel could not touch or approach the

in fact even their beasts even their

cows couldn't touch the mountain

only moses himself had access to the

mountain and even he couldn't even look

into the face of god

micah 4 1-7 would have been a dream come

true

it would have been a dream come true to

the people who hear this because they

see

we can go up to the mountain of the lord

we can touch the mountain

how though how did they be how could

they gain access to the mountain

jesus

suffered was abandoned was made lame and

weak was cast off was afflicted and

exposed to his enemies on our behalf

and he did that so that we could gain

access to the mountain of the lord

because he suffered the nations can flow

up the mountain of the lord prophet

because he suffered injustice we are

made just and holy before god himself

and because he was defiled

we can receive the coming glory that

micah foretold that

boon

thank you that you have opened a way

up the mountain

thank you that as we read this as we

look to to what micah only saw dimly

thank you that as we look at revelation

21 and 22 as we look at the scope of

scripture we see that the way has been

opened and all

of the sad things

are coming untrue

it's not just a promise that might

happen but it's a promise that has

already started happening lord we praise

you that we live in these latter days

and we pray that you would build our

faith and encourage our hearts to look

to you

to look to the mountain

we ask all this in your name
