afternoon sorry

if you will open your bibles to micah 7

please

so today we're going to finish with this

book of prophecy and hopefully we will

see god's heart for broken

wayward people clearly in these last 20

verses

and micah 7 is a bit like a miniature

version of the rest of the book actually

there's pain there's sorrow and there

are promises and suffering

and then there is grace

and i believe that micah 7 further

reinforces the call to repentance to a

humble walk with god and to stand firm

in god's promises to his people from

and so as we look into chapter 7 i want

us i want to call us to encounter and

experience the boundless

grace of god which enables us to look to

jesus in faith during trials

and

to lament the brokenness of the world

so if we could let's have someone read

this in tai read the whole chapter

and english speakers if you would just

follow along we're going to read the

entire

[Music]

foreign

m

resolution

[Applause]

so we're going to start with verses one

through six living in lament

so lament is not

a popular christian activity or topic in

fact it's really not a popular topic or

activity for any group of people

anywhere

but sometimes as christians

even our praise songs are really really

happy and they give us the picture that

christianity should be

always happy all the time

for

me

or the lament that we encounter in

scripture it more honestly reflects

real life in the real world

than the social media posts that most of

us and most of our friends post most of

the time the teleporting time

can come until

is where micah starts chapter 7 and it's

where we're going to begin looking at

god's word to us today so first of all

what is lament

one definition is that it is a

passionate expression of grief or sorrow

which

after reading micah 7 1 through 6 seems

like a pretty good definition for what

we just read so micah starts off these

this passage with the words

woe is me

quantity

well first of all as the end of his

ministry nears he looks around and he

sees the spiritual state of his own

people all that he can see is

hard-hearted unrepentant selfish people

because

and in verses two and three he complains

that they are hard-hearted ruthless and

unjust and he cries out that the thing

that they really do well

is evil and he says their hands are on

what is evil to

in verses three and four he sees unjust

selfish

power-hungry politicians and leaders he

sees that those who are considered the

great men or great in the society they

freely speak and act on their own evil

desires

and going even deeper he sees that this

atmosphere of ruthlessness and injustice

has also created this culture of fear

and mistrust and even violence

they all lie and wait for blood and they

hunt each other with a net in verse 5

friends and neighbors are not to be

trusted

so this is a pervasive evil that has

trickled down throughout all levels of

society

that people

and worst of all we see in verse 6 that

this evil has even reached to the family

so there's infighting and mistrust and

hatred among the people

who are supposed to be the most closely

linked together

this is a picture that micah gives us of

a society in ruin it's a picture of a

people

who have become their own little gods

and who are reaping the consequences

of and this is a picture of mankind all

the way throughout the scriptures

like in romans 3 none

is righteous

no not one no one understands no one

seeks for god all have turned aside and

together they have become worthless

no one does good not even one

whenever

metacon deal so judah micah's people

god's people they become a society that

is corrupt from top to bottom

and despite micah's

warnings and pleadings and preaching

they

so micah has very good reason to lament

and in this situation any future

restoration of god's people it must have

seemed impossible

but why does this matter to us how does

this idea or actually reality of lament

affect us as we live our lives in 2021.

so have you ever laying awake at night

worrying about the world that your

children are growing up in

because i have and i i still often do

do you ever struggle with hopelessness

or disappointment when you look at your

reality your life encompass in

comparison to your dreams

or do you ever just want to give up when

you see mismanagement or corruption and

injustice

in community leaders and in government

yes

so

so you see lament if you read the

scriptures and if you just pay attention

to the world around you this should be

like a normal

regular and even a holy rhythm of our

lives it is a right response to a life

under the fall

japan

but as we think about lament what it

means to lament i want to give us three

applications to lamenting

first of all is don't be ashamed of your

lament

it's right to look around you and inside

of you even and grieve

and grieve for the evil the injustice

and just the wrongness of it all all

is not well and we shouldn't pretend it

is

second of all don't waste your lament

let yourself feel

what paul talks about in romans 8

that the whole world is groaning for

things

and third don't let your lament become

despair see it's so easy to lose sight

of god

to forget his promises and then just to

lose hope altogether that is despair

but as one pastor said about this

passage the difference between lament

and despair

is that unlike despair lament

knows where to look that's it

from

so let's move on to verses 7 through 13

looking to the lord

i think that's

so now that we've looked at micah's

lament let's see what he does with this

lament and why this kind of lament

actually honors god

and as we start off wants to see that

verse 7 seems to be the key or the

foundation to understanding this passage

and to understanding micah's lament if

we want to see how to lament well we've

got to understand verse 7

so micah says but as for me

i will look to the lord

i will wait for the god of my salvation

my god will hear me

has just passionately expressed his deep

grief

and disappointment about the spiritual

state judah and how does he respond

but as for me

now just imagine this you've been

pouring your heart out you've been

pouring your soul out you've been

warning and preaching and pleading with

the people

that they would just turn back just come

back to god just do what you're supposed

to do and you see no fruit

no progress

and maybe we can make this more personal

so where or to what or to whom do you

look

when someone causes you to lose faith

or what about when a trusted friend

betrays you or when a boss or a company

uses and uses and uses you and you're

overlooked for promotions or

advancements

what do you do

to whom or to what do you look in those

times

do you look to your bank account when

all else crumbles around you do you run

to your money

or your stuff just to make you feel

better

or do you look to social media if you

don't have money when someone wrongs you

when someone

causes you to lose face do you vent

about it online just to gain sympathy

from others and just to make the ones

that you hurt look bad or when you're

feeling worthless do you rush to post

something that everybody's going to like

post the perfect picture so that you can

kind of collect people's likes and

comments so that you can feel better

about yourself again for a while

see because we like our sin and because

we're prone to idolatry and things like

i just talked about we tend to look to

these other things to save us to give us

relief or even to give us worth really

just to pull us out of lament

but micah has a much better

recommendation and actually he

recommends two interrelated things

first of all he recommends that we look

to the lord

so what does that look like because it's

really easy to say and it's almost a

christian cliche now but what does it

actually mean to look to the lord

christians

in this text he gives us two examples

first one is god is his light in

darkness in verse eight so in times of

in times of trouble everything around us

seems dark our world seems to be

crumbling around us and everything's

going wrong and in those dark times

micah says that god will be the light

through which he sees everything around

him so circumstances grief itself loss

pain suffering none of these things will

be the lens through which he sees

and the second thing that he does to

look to the lord is

god is his help verse nine to look to

god is to recognize that during grief

during suffering

nothing else can truly help see when

when my kids are hurt or sad or ashamed

or tired or angry

who do they look to they look to mama

and daddy

and in both of these things do you see

what micah is doing

he is preaching the gospel to himself he

is recounting the goodness and promises

of god and this

is what it means this is what it looks

like to look to the lord this is what

you do when life hurts this is when

uncertainty comes up

when it seems to be crushing you this is

what it looks like

and then second of all he recommends

waiting on the god of our salvation in

verse seven so notice first of all

there's a humble reliance on god in

spite of his own sin

perfection or moral righteousness or

that he has it all together he's

admitting that he is a sinner and he's

submitting to god's justice and he's

trusting in god's mercy and this is

actually the perfect example of walking

and next he waits on god's justice so

though people are mocking him though he

is slandered he's attacked he looks to

the lord and he waits

and he knows that he can't vindicate

himself he knows that his attackers are

going to keep attacking that the mockers

will keep mocking but that his salvation

and his vindication must come

and this is the question for each of us

why is that so hard

why can't we just look to the lord and

wait on the lord our god of our

salvation

i think that mostly it's because that we

don't actually believe the third phrase

in verse seven

notice he says but as for me i will look

and the third

my god will hear me.

looking to the lord and waiting on the

salvation is the foundational belief

that god hears him

why don't we believe this and how do we

come to believe and trust like this

really we bask

in his grace

so back in america

especially in the south where i'm from

the springtime is glorious so after

three or four months of dreary cold

staying indoors most of the time

you're missing the green trees and the

flowers and the green grass and

everybody's tired and just a bit

depressed

and when the spring comes and the sun

comes out the weather is perfect and the

leaves and the flowers come out and they

begin to appear

and all across the south people come

outside in droves and yards and parks

are full and people are getting together

for outdoor parties and everyone just

wants to be outside in nature

but mostly

people come outside to see

and feel and enjoy the sun again

and so after after several weeks of dark

cold days

we're just ready to go out and to feel

the sun on our skin and we bask in it we

revel in it we soak it in as if we're

never gonna see it

do you want to know how to train your

heart to look at god or to look to god

to wait on god and to believe that he

hears you

you have to revel in

savor enjoy and bask in his grace

so let's take a look at how micah does

this basking in god's grace through the

last seven verses of micah and before we

really dive into that i want you to

notice just how much like a psalm this

last section is to

hello

in fact so the language and the

structure and even a lot of the

references are from the psalms and one

quick point of application from all of

us

one quick point of replication is that

when we face lament when we are grieved

like micah when we want reassurance hope

and restoration we go to the psalms

moving from lament in verses one through

six there's a sort of and then there's a

personal declaration of god's goodness

and might and justice in verses 7

through 13. and then micah closes this

book which is

with what is basically a worship song

so let's look at just a couple of ways

which micah goes about basking in god's

grace

in these last seven verses and we're

only going to focus on two things

prayer

and praise

so look at prayer first in verses 14

through 17

micah is praying god's promises

to who

to god

calls on god to be a shepherd he calls

israel the flock of your inheritance he

calls god to use his staff to comfort

and shepherd judah he begs for

restoration

micah reminds god of his plan to bring

the nations into submission

to silence and defeat his own enemies

what is micah doing here he's basking in

the access that he has to god almighty

this is the kind of boldness from that

comes from believing

is actually training his own heart to

walk with god through lament and to look

to god always by walking through and

looking at god's promises

do you want to learn to look to the lord

in times of grief and lament do you want

your heart to be at rest in those kind

of times

well paul actually tells us how to do

that he says by prayer

and supplication and thanksgiving to god

and that by those things the peace of

god which surpasses all understanding

will

and so prayer is this intimate basking

in god's grace that takes us directly to

the throne of god

and it's there for us every waking

minute of the day

and then the last thing he does

is praise

he closes the book

this book

with judgment and pain he closes it with

praise of god for his boundless grace

and this is where we find and this is

where we bask in the full sunlight of

god's grace blessings

who is a god like you pardoning iniquity

and passing over transgression micah

looks around at the other gods of the

other nations and he is driven to praise

and worship why because there is no god

like this

you see because our little gods are

idols

they don't pardon iniquities

they don't pass over transgression they

don't deal with our sins and they don't

show us faithfulness they only bring

this guilt and shame and an ever growing

sense

but in micah's final words to the people

of judah and to us he points us to this

god

this is a god who forgives our

wickedness our rebellion and our guilt

who canceled the record of debt that

stood against you and i by nailing it to

the cross

this is the god who will tread our

iniquities underfoot

this is the god who keeps his word who

will not break covenant you show

faithfulness to jacob and steadfast love

to abraham

and he says this is the god who despite

your failures and my failures welcomes

all of us who come to him

for he

will again have compassion on us he

delights in steadfast love

so listen if you struggle to look to the

lord in times of grief in times of

lament if you tend to despair

then come and bask in this kind of grace

and the only way that you and i will

walk well through pain through grief and

the only way that you and i will be able

to look to the lord to wait on his

is if we personally encounter embrace

and bask in his boundless grace

father we thank you for this book for

this

holy word that you've given us we thank

you that you have shown us how to lament

you've shown us

what it looks like when we let our
