everyone hope you all are doing

well this afternoon

over the past two weeks we've been

looking at work we've been investigating

what the bible teaches us about the role

of work in our lives

so far we've looked at the grand story

of work

and last week we looked at work as a

means of glorifying god

that we can glorify god in our work

because work is a means of service

so we ended last week by touching on the

truth that god's prepared us all for

specific

particular kinds of work and today we're

looking at work through the lens of joy

map

number

so our passage for today while it

doesn't tell us everything the bible has

to say about joy and work it does give

us some concrete principles about one

why we work what work we should do and

how to do this

invite someone to read the passage for

us

online

thank you

so dorothy sayer is a british author she

wrote an essay called why work

only two modalities authorities

and in this essay she talks about how

there's a large disconnect between the

modern doctrine of work and the biblical

doctrine of work

foreign

[Music]

and she says that this disconnect is

causing great harm

so the modern way and by modern i mean

people who live in cities like bangkok

uh the modern way of thinking about work

is that we work so that we can have

money or status or things and so that we

can use the money to do the things that

we want to do

in other words many people no longer

work for the sake of the thing they do

the result of the work is a byproduct of

the real aim the real aim is money

status or identity to please one's

parents to please oneself etc

and so she says that's why it's possible

for us to be miserable doing particular

jobs because we're not working for the

joy of what we do but in order to get

something that's the modern doctrine of

work

and so dorothy sayers defines the

biblical doctrine of work like this

she says work is a gracious expression

of creative energy in the service of

others

and so while this passage doesn't tell

us everything the bible says about work

we'll see paul's writing here informs

the biblical doctrinal work

here

and this is extremely important because

if we don't understand what the bible

says about work we won't be able to rest

a lot of us know what it's like to be

overworked others of us might be prone

to idleness and paul has something to

say to us all right

god

so one of the things we see in this

passage is that the reason we should

work is because it helps other people

our main motivation should not be for

money or status but because we're

helpful to other people

so versus 10 paul seems to be talking

about love and then 11 and 12 are about

work and so you might think they're not

related but it's actually one main idea

soon

so in verses 9 to 10 paul speaks about

love he's saying that we know you know

about loving each other and you do this

already we don't need to write to you

about this

and then in verses 11 and 12 he says yet

we urge you

to keep loving more and more

to do this

making it your ambition to lead a quiet

life working with your hands

um

paul is saying that working is the way

you love

he says i want you to love more and more

by working

he then says so you will not be

dependent on anybody so you will not

drain your community but rather invest

in your community

working as a means of loving and being

of service

and therefore if if we have the option

of choosing our jobs one principle we

see here is to get a job that makes us

helpful a job that loves people a job

that's of service to others

now does this mean we need to quit our

jobs and work for an ngo

i mean you know the answer to that of

course not

all work if it's good work it's helpful

all work that is good is service

for example the room we're sitting in

right now it's a nice room

the lights had to be manufactured and

installed

we're not sweating we have cold ac

because someone manufactured and

installed it

it's also clean and the reason it's

clean is because the mambang come in and

clean it and make it a safe place to be

in fact if it wasn't clean then we

continue to come every week we would

eventually die

it's called hygiene

we also have a great view

and we don't need to walk up 29 stories

in order to enjoy this view because

someone installed an elevator

someone was taught by a teacher or a

professor how to install an elevator

all of that

resourcing manufacturing engineering

transporting managing trading importing

exporting cleaning all of that is

serviced

and all of that all work through which

you are promoting the common good

through which you are helping

that's

why

service in thai

things

and so

paul talks about work as an expression

of love

the question is who is he talking to

him

when paul says make it your ambition to

lead a quiet life minding your own

business

that's a hard verse to translate some of

the commentators say that what paul is

actually saying is strive

thessalonian christians to whom paul is

writing if he needs to say strive for

quiet

must have been experiencing the opposite

christian names

they were experiencing a disquiet a lack

of ease a restlessness a boredom

touched on this when we looked at how

we're because we're made in god's image

we're also called to work

just as god worked and how god put adam

and eve in the garden

and we see paul alluding to that here

he connects striving for quiet with work

in other words in order to experience

rest one must work

on and so paul alludes to hear something

that is more explicitly mentioned in

other places in the bible like ephesians

two eight to ten for instance that we

just read

his name

verse 10 says for we are god's handiwork

created in christ jesus to do good works

which god prepared us in advance for us

to do

so what paul is alluding to here in

first thessalonians is that god equips

us for work

for example during the middle ages

people viewed monks and priests as

people who had been called by god and

everyone else were the regular fault

but during the reformation the

protestant reformers like calvin and

luther came to understand that all

and the word calling is much bigger than

how we narrowly define it today to mean

employment or a job

being a parent being a son or a daughter

is as much a calling as being a ceo of a

nonprofit all work is a calling from god

even

and so if all calling is if all work is

a calling from god then it stands that

god equips us for working

so the reformers say and paul alludes to

it here that the work we ought to do

the work we ought to do fits with our

insides so like our abilities our

passions our talents our desires

that means it is a good idea to look

inside and see whether or not there's a

sense of quiet there

in your work

god calls us and equips us to do certain

kinds of work

but this doesn't mean everyone is called

to just one job

so tim keller he gives a helpful

framework about this he says to think

about the spectrum of jobs all the

different kinds of work that's possible

so our gifts temperaments abilities

passions experience all the things that

make us unique mean that there is a

range a section on that spectrum to

which god has called us by who he's made

us to be

we need to look at our insides if we

have the chance to

and say i need to find work that i

really enjoy that inspires me a work i

have a desire for

telomeres

it's really important to hold these

things together

work that benefits others and work which

fits us

one reason for this is because

oftentimes the gifts

talents abilities affinities passions

that god has given us become clear and

even surprise us when we look around at

our context and see the needs in our

community

another way of discerning work that fits

is looking around and thinking what

needs do you vibrate to what kinds of

people problems or ministry needs move

you

know

upside

so for example in acts 17 16

paul is greatly distressed by the people

in athens worshiping idols

and that leads him to begin a ministry

of apologetics verse

oftentimes we may not be aware of what

work fits us until we look at the

concrete needs of our context

for example i never would have thought

that i would enjoy being on staff at a

church but over the past two years i've

come to see that this is on that

spectrum that fits

into

again this doesn't mean god calls us to

only one job

but it does mean that god's prepared us

for our work and oftentimes he prepares

us through our work

so in mark when jesus calls james and

john to come follow him

they drop their nets and follow him but

they were still fishermen in fact jesus

says that he would make them fishers of

men

and

so on the one hand we're to do work that

and we're also to do work that benefits

an ideal job then

is one where these two things come

together

if we're doing work that fits us and it

benefits others

not necessarily the most high paying job

but it's ideal if these two things come

now there's a tension here

some of us may be extremely blessed to

find jobs where these two things overlap

but for many of us we're not in ideal

situations in fact some might even be

thinking oh my goodness this is so

unrealistic many of us don't find the

ideal job

and even for those of us who do enjoy

what we do we don't enjoy everything all

the time

but even there we can take those

principles and say to ourselves how can

i as much as possible

use my gifts the way god's equipped me

to do my job in a way that fits

and on the other hand saying to

ourselves man cleaning this this room

doesn't seem to be changing people's

lives as much as i'd like to see but

it's for the common good

reminding ourselves that even in our

unideal jobs we're still benefiting

people we're loving people

filling your heart with that

even in an unideal job you're still

serving people

so we've talked about the reason for

work talked about what work we should do

but if we end there it's not enough

we talked about this earlier the modern

is to work not for the pleasure of

working but for money status identity

now of course that shouldn't be our

primary purpose but these principles

alone are not going to stop our hearts

from being pulled into work for money or

to be wrapped up in our work because

work is our identity these principles

are not going to cure that

happiness

when we pursue work as our identity or

for our status work either becomes too

important or unimportant

in other words we become enslaved to our

work we burn out we work too much we cut

corners or we don't care about our work

if work becomes our master and our

identity it will drive us crazy

we're so wrapped up in our work that we

can't fail and if we do we won't forgive

ourselves

that's why when work goes well we feel

on top of the world but when it doesn't

or when we're out of a job we feel

useless and worthless

if we feel this way it's because we're

trying to find our identity through our

work and through our performance

we need to work we need to perform we

need to do something in order to feel as

if we have any worth or value

and because of this

we can never rest even when we're

resting we're not really resting

we're always trying to justify our

existence by being the most productive

or the most successful we can't rest

so this verse one here sets the context

for everything we just read paul says we

instructed

so what paul says here he also says in

colossians and ephesians that is we are

to work to please god

so what does it mean to please god

lemon

well there's a difference between

pleasing god and appeasing god

we can either do our work to appease god

that is i'm doing all this work because

i want god to hear me i want god to

answer my prayers so i'll do all this

work for him

plenty of people are moral are good

plenty of people serve the needy give to

the poor in order so that god would hear

them and answer their prayers that's

working to appease god like

and plenty of us are very disciplined

very moral working like crazy in order

to appease god or our parents or those

around us

that's not what pleasing god means and

if we do that we'll never find any rest

we can't walk away from our work in

order to care for our families we can't

put our work down in order to take time

for our bodies

rather living to please god means living

for the pleasure of giving pleasure to

living for the sheer joy of pleasing god

who is in heaven working for the sheer

joy of pleasing god

and unless jonathan edwards he's a 18th

century dude he says unless we've

experienced the grace of god

whatever we do no matter how good it

seems to be we do it out of

self-interest

right but the point still stands if

unless we've experienced god's grace

everything we do we do out of

we do good things

to get we do good deeds to get things

from other people or from god but when

we experience god's grace if you know

that god loves you because of what

if you know god calls you his child and

embraces you because of jesus's work

that you are home that you are accepted

it's only then that we're able to do

work for the sheer joy of pleasing our

master pleasing god

when we realize how much god loves us

when you realize what god went through

in order for you to be a part of his

family you won't do things to get

something from god

please

knowing what he's done for us knowing

that we're saved by his grace

if we make our careers our masters it

will kill us it will make us hate

ourselves if we fail our careers we're

not going to forgive ourselves because

that's where our identities and sense of

self comes from

but jesus christ is the only master who

will forgive you and die for you

when we realize and grasp this it

changes our relationship to work

finally we'll be able to work from a

place of rest

only then we are no longer defined by

our own work we are defined by jesus's

and you know what's ironic it's only

then that we can find true fulfillment

in our work it's only then that we can

work for the sheer joy of working

hebrews 4 it says there remains a rest

for the people of god

and when we understand the gospel

we experience this rest

of

free to finally rest from the need to

prove ourselves to give ourselves

significance or self-worth especially

instead we're free to work in response

to our rest we can work from a place of

rest

we still work

but we work knowing that we aren't

defined by our work and this gives us

the power to live for the pleasure of

pleasing our heavenly fathers

jesus says come to me all who are weary

and burdened and i will give you rest

take my yoke upon you and learn from me

and you'll find rest for your souls my

yoke

becoming a christian does not doesn't

mean you don't work

it means that through jesus and his

finished work we can now have real

lasting rest and that now we can work

finding true rest in the lord jesus

christ

are you burdened from trying to prove

yourself through your work jesus says

come to him

others of us may be stuck in our jobs or

looking for work experiencing a disquiet

but she would help us to live in our

environments from a place of rest

knowing that we are defined by your work

jesus not our own

hey
