So

if you do need

uh translation into Thai, Chan will be

translating

into Thai, and you can grab a set of

headphones

in this back corner here.

We [clears throat] want to say if you're

visiting

Excuse me.

We want to say welcome to you. Welcome

to Grace City Bangkok. This church is

about 12 years old, so we're in our just

about to go into our teenage years. So

uh we're grateful for how God has

blessed this community

uh here in Bangkok. We are glad that

you're here. This church, you know, our

name Grace City

uh

kind of talks about two things that we

are really grateful for, really thankful

for. Of course, the grace of God in our

lives working in our community to change

us to build us up in the Lord Jesus

Christ. And then also this city in which

we live. We want to be good neighbors.

We want to love the Lord our God with

all our heart, soul, mind, and strength,

and

love our neighbors as we're led to do by

Jesus. So welcome. We look forward to

getting to speak with you more after the

service today. Uh I've mentioned to a

few of you, and if you don't know yet,

if you we don't normally have this much

food here, but uh tonight we do because

we're having a special dinner uh

together, and there's plenty of food,

there's always plenty of food. So

please, if you can, stay and enjoy

conversation,

uh some good food, and time to just

celebrate Christmas together. So welcome

to you. My name is Tim, Tim Mills. I'm

one of the elders here at Grace City,

uh and we're so glad that you're here.

So Chan actually started us off this

evening as we came into our time of

worship referencing the Advent candles,

the Advent wreath. Uh and this is of

course the fourth and final Sunday of

Advent, the fourth and final Sunday of

Advent.

Now this word Advent in English comes

from Latin, comes from the Latin word

adventus.

And adventus means and Advent therefore

means coming,

or means arrival, arriving.

As we've mentioned over the past few

weeks, as Chan just mentioned as well,

this is the season

where the Christian church the world

over. So as we celebrate here with our

brothers and sisters, of course, across

the world, this is when we celebrate in

the the church calendar, the church

year, the moment in history

when God

took on flesh.

When God took on flesh, entered into

this world.

The Bible

talks about and gives uh the name to

Jesus Emmanuel.

Emmanuel. And Emmanuel actually means

God with us, God with us.

God having come into this world

that he created.

Each Sunday this month

we've been lighting these candles one at

a time

each week

to remind us

that Jesus is the light of the world.

A couple of Sundays ago the theme was

light of the world in the sermon, and so

we had some of the lights off, you might

remember, and we turned them on at

different times during the service.

Jesus, the light of the world.

Today

all the candles are lit.

Of course, this uh this week we

celebrate Christmas as it comes, and so

we light all the candles remembering

that Jesus

has come, the light of the world,

illuminating

this world, illuminating the darkness,

shining

into our brokenness

with a perfect love,

a saving grace,

and an eternal hope.

So during Advent

we celebrate and we remember that Jesus

has come.

And we also, and this is, you know, the

entire Christian faith hangs on this.

We also look ahead

to when he will come again.

But the reality is

that we celebrate this every day.

The Christian celebrates this every day,

that Jesus has come,

that Jesus will come again.

Our text today is from the Gospel of

John. We've been going through the

Gospel of John as series right now, and

today actually is centered on

John chapter 3.

A very familiar passage that we'll read

in just a few moments.

And it also focuses on our hearts, uh

our hearts on when Jesus came. But

before we read this passage, we're not

going to read the entire thing. So I

want to just draw out two things for us

to have in mind as we read it. Uh

perhaps some of you are very familiar

with this passage. I think most of you

maybe are.

Uh some of you this might be new for

you, and so I wanted to just draw out

two things.

What we are given in the Gospels, of

course, is a look

into Jesus' life and his ministry on

this earth, like history, truth, factual

stories.

And what we see tonight, what we'll read

today, is a conversation.

We get to step into and read a

transcript, if you will, of a

conversation that Jesus had with a man

named Nicodemus.

Now, you can go back and read this

entire chapter, chapter 3, perhaps

tonight, maybe this week, and read read

it through slowly and and meditate on

this, perhaps.

But as you go back and read, you'll see

a couple of things that are interesting

about Nicodemus. You'll learn that he

was a Pharisee. So he was in in Jewish

times and in Jewish practice, he was a

scholar, he was a teacher. Uh the text

says that he was a prominent leader

among the Jewish people. In fact, it

uses the term that he was a ruler of the

people. So very powerful, very

influential. Uh in addition to this, he

was also a part of a ruling body, so a

council, a local council that ruled over

the people in religious affairs, and

this body was called the Sanhedrin. So a

very prominent, influential group, very

prominent, influential leader, okay? So

he also as as, you know, because of his

role and his standing in the community,

he represents the Jewish people. He

represents uh Judaic practice and

religion. He represents uh in essence

like the people and the faith at this

time, okay? So he's representative of

all of that.

Another interesting fact, so it's

interesting to know, okay, who's Jesus

speaking with? Who's coming to Jesus?

The other interesting fact is that he

comes to Jesus

at night time.

And it wasn't because he had a full

schedule and like, "Oh, I'll get to

Jesus later."

He came to Jesus at night time. Why?

Many scholars believe, and it's the

traditional view,

and that John included this detail

because this was a very risky meeting

for Nicodemus.

He had to be somewhat secretive about

it.

He had to exercise caution.

It was

it was risky. It could cost him a lot.

If others found out that he had been

with Jesus, he had been talking with

Jesus,

he could lose his standing in the

community. He could be cast out. He

could lose his position.

Uh

he could maybe suffer harm, violence,

maybe worse, maybe worse.

But he was willing to risk this.

We know this because he he went. He was

willing to risk it because, why? He had

real questions.

He had questions for Jesus, and he

needed answers to these questions, so he

went. So those two things, who was

Nicodemus,

and why did he go to Jesus?

He had ultimate questions of faith.

He had ultimate questions of belief.

He needed to hear from Jesus.

These profound questions. He needed to

know, he needed to understand. So he

comes with a a posture of humility, like

even that he would come,

and he became he came with a posture of

of a desire to learn and to understand.

Now again, we won't read all of chapter

3, but we'll pick up after some of the

conversation has already happened, some

very interesting questions and and

statements from Jesus,

but we'll pick up with just a little bit

of the portion that we'll focus on

tonight.

Uh and so again, go back and reread this

tonight, this week, kind of familiarize

yourself again, refamiliarize yourself

with this story.

Um let me pray for us.

Lord God, we thank you uh

that we are here tonight. You've brought

us. Here we are. We are we're gathered

together

uh in this in this place, in this space,

in this time.

We are grateful for that. And God, we

ask and pray that you would open our

hearts

and our minds to receive your word to us

today.

May we hear what you would have us to

hear.

May we see what you would have us to

see. Would you help us understand that

what you would have us understand and

know.

Would you please help us to walk forward

in faith and trust and obedience to your

faithful leading

in our lives. We ask and pray this in

your holy name, Lord Jesus.

Amen.

So we'll be reading in John 3:16

through verses 21.

Let me read this to us. And it's on the

screen and it's um

in Thai and in English for us as well.

For God so loved the world

that he gave his only son

that whoever believes in him should not

perish

but have eternal life.

For God did not send his son into the

world to condemn the world

but in order that the world might be

saved through him.

Whoever believes in him is not condemned

but whoever does not believe is

condemned already

because he has not believed in the name

of the only son of God.

And this is the judgment.

The light has come into the world

and people loved the darkness rather

than the light because their works were

evil.

For everyone who does wicked things

hates the light and does not come to the

light lest his works should be exposed.

But whoever does what is right

and true

comes to the light so that it may be

clearly seen that his works

have been carried out in God.

This is the word of the Lord.

John 3:16

it's the most well-known

verse from the Bible in all the world.

It's been called the golden text of the

Bible.

In public settings in the US many times

at sporting events or other large

gatherings or even driving down the

road, you might see a sign

that has this reference on it. John

3:16. It'll be in big bold letters so

that it will stand out.

Or you might see it referenced in

different you know in pop culture here

and there. It's often one of the first

passages Bible verses in the Bible that

that people will commit to memory

sometimes when they're very young

maybe later in life.

Now, the reason is because this verse

it distills down the essence of the good

news, the gospel.

All that the Bible points to, the apex

of the Christian faith, that God loved

God

loves

and acted out of that love to save

through Jesus Christ.

All those that turn from darkness

and in faith to Jesus will not perish,

the text says

but will find eternal life

in and through Jesus.

God so loved, God so loves and this

this is how he demonstrated that love.

How he has shown his love.

The phrase God so loved points to the

way the manner by which God shows his

love to this world. This so is not

emphasizing the quantity or the amount

of God's love as in God loved the world

so much

but rather God so loved as in God so

loved the world this way. This is how

God loved. This is how God

loves.

God so loved that he gave.

He gave.

We're going to look

at just how God loved, how God so loves

with three

focus points. A perfect love

God saves with a saving grace

and God loves with an eternal hope.

Verse 16

starts

focused on one of the major attributes

of God.

That God, the God of the Bible, is a God

of love. God so loved.

When we do theology

seeking to understand God we're trying

to learn about who God is, what God is

like.

Various historical global religions,

faiths, they do the same thing, right?

Asking these questions, doing the same

thing.

In in Hinduism and Hindu faith for

example, there are many gods.

And the Hindu would would understand and

think about these many different gods as

having different attributes.

The Hindu would say that Vishnu is

protective, Krishna is relational, Shiva

destructive

Kali fierce.

In the Buddhist faith, ultimate reality

is is non-theistic, right? There's not

this this God or this benevolent ruler.

So, there's only symbolic

personification of parts of our

existence, the Buddhist would say. For

example, the Buddhist might say love

emerges

as the self dissolves.

In Taoism

the Tao is impersonal

but the Taoist might attribute

human-like qualities to forces of

nature.

For example, water is humble

and yielding and yet strong or earth and

heaven

might be impartial or described as

impartial, not cruel

but not benevolent or emotionally

invested either, right? Just these

forces of nature. Now, I just share a

few of those to help us to understand

more richly what the Christian faith

says. In contrast to these, the

Christian faith says and we find that

the God of the Bible is a personal God.

A personal God. God is the creator of

all.

And we learn about God through his word.

God has made himself known through his

word and through the Holy Spirit. And so

we begin to understand the many facets

and attributes of who God is

what God is like and what God has done.

And what God is doing.

So, verse 16 speaks of God being a God

of love because God so loved and

demonstrating this love.

But elsewhere in the scriptures, we see

another beautiful aspect of this. Now,

this is in 1 John

chapter 4.

Beloved

let us love one another

for love is from God and whoever loves

has been born of God and knows God.

Anyone who does not love does not know

because God

is love.

In this, the love of God was made

manifest among us that God sent his only

son into the world so that we might live

through him.

In this

Not that we have loved God

but that he loved us and sent his son to

be the propitiation

for our sins.

if God so loved us

we also ought to love

one another. No one has ever seen God

but if we love one another, God abides

in us

and his love is perfected

in us.

Friends, not only does God love

but God is

love.

And the God that is love loves in this

way.

He has given

of himself

that we might be saved

from ourselves.

Jesus came not to condemn

but to save us

with a saving grace.

The second part of verse 16

shows the extent

of God's love.

True and ultimate love

is sacrificial.

True love

is towards another

and it is for the other.

It is self-denying

and at times

very costly.

My father was in the military, the army.

I was growing up and I remember him

sharing a story with me

when I was younger and it had a profound

effect on me, enormous impact on me and

my thinking.

And just to be clear, my father did not

witness this event

as a soldier but he told me about this

event.

He recounted a time during war, I think

it was during the Vietnam War

when a hand grenade

was thrown into barracks, so where

soldiers were were staying.

it was thrown into this building and it

landed in close proximity to a group of

soldiers. And one of the soldiers,

seeing this hand grenade in a

split-second decision,

um jumped on top of it

and covered it with his body.

Uh and of course it it took his life.

And he gave himself

to protect those around him.

As I tried to get a little bit more

information on this story, maybe to

learn a name or or when it happened, I

actually discovered that this type of

event has happened even a few times in

in more recent history. In some of

different

war uh

settings in in more even more recent

history.

Even uh Barack Obama, President Obama,

awarding a Medal of Honor

to a soldier who actually survived a

blast that he

jumped upon,

shielding others from.

But it was amazing to think about this

kind of heroic action,

this selfless

self-sacrifice

of your life for others.

Um

and in other parts of the world and and

in history and other other times

throughout history,

we see this kind of self-sacrifice,

someone giving their lives for someone.

Think about the love, oftentimes of a

mother, like for her children.

She will do anything to protect her

children,

even give her life. Like there are

stories, right, that that we might know

of and could talk about

on and on.

And I'm and I'm sorry in a way to share

like of this war story, such a graphic

story, because it's horrible

to think about this, right?

But I think it's important that to share

this because these kinds of stories,

they actually get to the deeper

understanding. They get to the deeper

part of what is happening here when

there is profound sacrifice.

Self-sacrifice,

profound.

And true true love, like deep deep love,

is self-sacrificial.

Giving of oneself for

the other.

Perhaps you've experienced something

like that even in your own life.

The giving of oneself,

it gets to that ultimate love, that

ultimate self-sacrifice.

And we're not going to talk a lot today

about

the understanding of of the Christian

teaching and understanding and faith in

the triune God, but I'll share a little

bit.

Understanding God the Father, God the

Son, the Holy Spirit, this beautiful

relationship, but I have something

that'll help us think about it.

But I want us to try to wrap our minds

around what happened

when Jesus came to this world.

How did the triune God demonstrate

ultimate love?

Tim Keller uh in in one of his many

books, he he references and I think

gives a beautiful picture of the

Trinity. So, let's read this. I'll read

it to us. We can think about this and

meditate on this.

It's going to help us get to what we're

trying to get to here. Let me read.

The life of the Trinity is characterized

not by self-centeredness,

but by mutually self-giving love.

When we delight and serve someone else,

we enter into a dynamic orbit around him

or her.

We center on the interests and desires

of the other. That creates a dance,

particularly if there are three persons

in this,

each of whom moves around the other two.

So it is, the Bible tells us,

each of the divine persons centers upon

the others. None demands that the others

revolve around him. Each voluntarily

circles the other two, pouring love,

delight, and adoration into them. Each

person of the Trinity loves, adores,

defers to, and rejoices in the others.

That creates a dynamic, pulsating dance

of joy

and love.

>> [snorts]

>> There's a lot there,

and we don't have a lot of time to get

into this beautiful doctrine in our

faith, and yet it will serve to help us

with this next thought.

God so loved

that he emptied himself

to become one of us.

To enter into this world, God disrupted

the perfect love,

this joyful dance

of the Trinity to give himself for us.

Now Jesus,

another beautiful doctrine is that he

was fully man and fully God.

And yet to save us through his saving

grace cost God the Father his son.

Because God the Father on the cross, we

know

that God the Father would forsake

and abandon Jesus.

The son would bear our sin

upon the cross and would die. Jesus

would die

the death

that is ours, the death that we deserve.

God is a God of love

and a God also of justice.

He has to be both to be either.

A God that does not care about evil,

a God that does not care about sin and

brokenness and dealing with it,

cannot be a God of love.

God has to be both a God of love and a

God of justice to be either.

The Bible is clear that our sin,

mankind's sin, our sin, my sin, your

sin,

it leads to condemnation.

It leads to condemnation. Our text

alludes to that tonight.

Because we stand before a holy God and

we sin before a holy God.

But God in his mercy sent

Jesus not to condemn us. You see that?

This is beautiful. Not to condemn us in

our sinfulness, but what? To rescue us,

to save us.

But it would cost a payment. This is

where the justice comes in. A payment

for sin. The wages of sin, the Bible

says, is death.

There had to be a just exchange. There

had to be. Jesus himself would take on

our rightful punishment.

Jesus would take on

the sin

of the world and die for us

on the cross.

And as the text says, all those that

believe in Jesus, all those that

believe,

will not perish.

But as they look to him in faith, they

will what? Receive eternal life in him.

John 3:16,

it's all there.

But we're going to look at some other

places, too, that firm this up

and show the beauty

of our faith.

In Isaiah, you know, Isaiah, the book of

Isaiah is prophetic in the sense that it

talks about the Messiah that's coming,

the one that's coming.

Jesus being foretold. And this is what

it says about the one that will come.

He was pierced

for our transgressions.

He was crushed for our iniquities.

Upon him

was placed the chastisement that brought

us peace.

And with his wounds,

we are healed.

Jesus

did not come to condemn.

We already stand condemned in our sin,

the text says, but Jesus came to save.

Jesus came to heal.

He came to heal us by being wounded

for us.

Romans, chapter 5.

Therefore, since we have been justified

by faith,

we have peace with God

through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Through him we also have obtained access

by faith into this grace in which we now

stand.

And we rejoice in the hope of the glory

of God. Not only that, but we rejoice

in our sufferings,

knowing that suffering produces

endurance.

And endurance produces character, and

character produces hope.

And hope does not put us to shame,

because God's love has been poured into

our hearts through the Holy Spirit who

has been given to us.

For a while we were still weak,

at the right time,

Christ died for the ungodly.

For one will scarcely die for a

righteous person,

though perhaps

for a good person one would dare even to

die.

But God shows his love for us

in that while we were still sinners,

Christ died for us.

Since therefore we have now been

justified by his blood. You see that?

Justice.

We have been justified by his blood much

more

shall we be saved by him

from the wrath. Again, justice. From the

wrath of God.

Jesus' saving grace

leads us away

from condemnation

and gives us

an eternal hope.

Let me read the final the the final part

here that I had from Romans 5. For if we

if while we were enemies,

we were reconciled to God

by the death of his son, much more now

that we are reconciled shall we be saved

by his life. More than that, we also

rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus

Christ, through whom we have now

received reconciliation. It's all there.

It's all there.

So Jesus' saving grace leads us away

in which we stand

and gives us gives to us an eternal

hope.

Looking at the second part of our text,

our main text this evening,

one significant aspect of of Jesus

Christ entering this world was that his

presence

exposed our wickedness.

Jesus, the light.

Our text talks about that, right? True

light fills darkness. It reveals

everything.

In the same way, the truth of Jesus

reveals our sinfulness.

Our greatest fear

is being fully exposed.

Think about that.

Sometimes the thoughts we have or what's

inside of us, we think, "Oh my oh my,

if people knew

if people really knew

if I was fully exposed, what?" Right? We

think, "What would they think of me?

They wouldn't care for me.

They might despise me. They wouldn't

love me."

But the gospel, the the teaching of the

gospel,

it flips that around. We just read

in the gospel we see that we are fully

loved by God. God so loved God so loves.

It says that Christ died for us while we

were yet sinners. You see that?

While we were yet sinners, Christ died

for us. We are fully known in our sin,

we are fully loved.

The change that Jesus brings about in

the life of us, in the life of the

sinner,

is for our greater good. It's for our

greatest good.

The sacrificial love that God reaching

into us, changing us, leading us in this

eternal hope.

It's a new life for today, a new

understanding of how we live in and by

Jesus for today and it's forever.

It's forever.

The eternal reality for the Christian is

that we will be in the presence of God

one day.

This is the the hope that we live with,

the reality that we live with.

I want to read to us from a again from

further in to John 4. Listen to this.

By this we know

that we abide in him and he in us. Okay?

Life in in Christ.

Because he has given us

of his spirit.

And we have seen and testify that the

Father has sent his Son to be the savior

of the world.

Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son

of God abides in him and he in God.

So we have come to know and to believe

the love that God has for us.

God is love.

And whoever abides in love abides in God

and God

abides in him. We need to sit with this.

Maybe this week just sit with this and

just say, "God, help me

to

just love and appreciate the greater

facets of your love."

Just sit with this. This is so

incredibly beautiful. I have some more

Bible for you and for us here. We're not

done. Romans 8.

I'm not done with Romans or for John 4

yet.

By this is love perfected with us, so

that we may have confidence for the day

of judgment. Remember that condemnation?

No.

Because as he is, so

also are we in this world. There is no

fear in love. PB referenced this

earlier. But perfect love casts out

fear, for fear has to do with

punishment. And whoever fears has not

been perfected in love. We love

because he first loved us.

Now to Romans 8.

There is therefore now no condemnation

for those who are in Christ Jesus.

For the law of the Spirit of life has

set you free

in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and

death.

For God has done what the law, weakened

by the flesh, could not do.

How?

By sending his own Son

in the likeness of sinful flesh

and for sin,

he condemned sin in the flesh in order

that the righteous requirement of the

law might be fulfilled in us

who walk not according to the flesh but

according to the Spirit.

Martin Luther has this great quote to

help us understand what took place here.

Learn to know Christ

and him crucified. Learn to sing to him

and say, "Lord Jesus, you are my

righteousness.

I am your sin.

You have taken upon yourself what is

mine

and given me what is yours.

You have become what you were not so

that I might become

what I was not."

stepping into this world,

becoming like one of us,

taking our sin upon himself, dying our

And the text says in Corinthians, 2

Corinthians,

the righteousness of God being bestowed

upon us as we look to Jesus.

Jesus becoming what he was not that we

might become what we were not.

This is the gospel.

Friends, God so loved

and sent his Son that we might know his

So come to this light again and again.

Christian,

if you have

followed and believed in the Lord Jesus,

just be reminded of this. Be encouraged.

I mean, be encouraged again in the hope

of Christmas every day

that God did this. He took on flesh and

has given us new life in him.

And you know, every week when we gather

and even as these sermons are recorded

you know, some of some of you might say,

"I you know, I I don't know that I

believe this. I wouldn't call myself a

Christian. I have questions."

Perhaps you have questions like

Nicodemus did, like honest questions,

real questions that you need answers to.

And first of all, I would say we are so

thankful that you're here.

And and we would love to talk to you,

like hear your questions and and wrestle

along with you about these questions

that you may have.

But my my hope for you is that you would

consider these these texts from the

Bible and consider the claim of the

Christian faith.

Could it be?

Could this be that Jesus is

who he says he is, the light of the

world?

And and what I would ask of you is is to

do this, like go to Jesus, come to Jesus

with those questions and ask him

to reveal

himself to you in this way.

There was a theologian, Jack Miller, and

Tim Keller actually would often would

say this and and cite this. And Jack

Miller would say something along these

lines. He would say, "Hey, cheer up. You

know, because

you're actually a worse sinner

than you ever dared to imagine."

Now first part is like, "Oh, you know,

like you're actually worse off than you

think." But that second part, right, is

where the the gospel is.

But you're more loved

than you ever dared hope.

More loved than you can I've also heard

it said than you can possibly imagine.

We need to meditate on the love of God,

understand those deeper facets of it.

Another quote from Luther for us.

This is what we can do.

Talk about this meditation or this

sitting with

the truth of who Jesus is.

The highest of all God's commands is

this,

that we ever hold up before our eyes the

image of his dear son,

our Lord Jesus Christ. He must daily be

to our hearts the perfect mirror. Think

about that, that reflection. The perfect

mirror in which we behold how much God

loves us

and how well.

In his infinite goodness as a faithful

God, he has grandly cared for us

in that he gave

his dear son

And Luther says, "Do not let this mirror

and the throne of grace be torn away

from before your eyes."

Friends, gaze upon

the love of God.

Gaze upon your savior, the Lord Jesus

Christ.

We have sung and we will sing two of of

Wesley's hymns.

And we will close

uh this reading. I'll read to you

from one of his others that we will not

sing today, but maybe you can go and and

sing this this week as well.

But listen to this.

Charles Wesley so well captured this.

He left his father's throne

above,

so free,

so infinite his grace,

emptied himself of all but love,

and bled

for Adam's helpless race.

'Tis mercy all, all of this is mercy,

immense and free,

for oh my God,

it found out me.

No condemnation now I dread.

and all in him is mine.

Alive in him, my living head, my ruler.

And clothed

in righteousness divine.

Bold I approach the eternal throne

and claim the crown

through Christ

my own.

Amazing love,

how can it be

that thou, that you, my God,

for me?

Let's pray.

Lord Jesus,

we look to your birth,

remembering that you took on flesh, that

you

that you dwelled among us

in this world that you created.

We remember that you you took on our

brokenness and sin. Help us

help us understand the depth of that.

And then and then you died.

You died for us. You died for our sin,

because of our sin.

And Lord Jesus, we also believe in the

eternal hope that you bring because

death could not keep you down. In fact,

you conquered our greatest enemy.

And we will one day be in your presence

forever.

Help us understand that.
