good to see you all again this

afternoon

today

hope your weeks have been going well

over the past couple weeks we've been

exploring what it means for the gospel

to impact the way we do work

[Music]

as we finish our series today we're

looking more deeply at a subject that

undergirds all we've talked about

that god is our provider it's too long

sorry so so as as we finish our series

we're going to be looking more deeply at

a subject that undergirds everything

we've talked about

that's the foundation

that topic being that god is our

provider

so this passage has a couple of things

to say to us about god's provisions

so there's a lot of passages in

scripture that if you read them it might

make you go oh shoot what's god saying

over here

can you say it again

sorry there's a lot of passages in

scripture

that when we read them might make us

a little uncomfortable

and

it's tough as a preacher to preach on

these texts you all have seen me preach

on this before

and thankfully this is not one of those

texts

thankfully this is not one of those

i think it's safe to say that this is a

text that everybody loves

so let me just say i'm blessed to be

able to share god's word with us today

over this text

and so one of the repeated themes of the

bible is that of god's provisions

he says do not worry about your life

what you will eat or drink or about your

body

and three times he says do not be

anxious

now the question comes up

who on earth would have the audacity to

command someone to not be anxious

think about it

if you're worried or depressed

one of the least helpful things for

someone to do

is to come up to you and say oh snap out

of it

back up stop being so depressed get on

with your life

that's not really helpful

and when we read this text more closely

we see that this is not what jesus is

in this passage jesus is not telling his

disciples oh get over it don't be

he's showing them why they don't have to

be anxious

and we'll see that it's directly

connected to god's provision

so three questions

two where does it come from

and three what do we do about it

so

but according to the world health

organization anxiety has become one of

the most common prevailing qualities of

our time today

psychological component is that

anxiousness can be a focus on one

specific danger

at the moment

but it can also be a

debilitating general condition that

isn't focused on one particular thing

um

always fearing that something will go

wrong never being able to truly rest

there's also a physiological component

to anxiety and this is called stress

so you know that when we perceive a

threat our nervous our body's nervous

systems kicks into fight-or-flight

and our bodies release adrenaline and

other hormones so that we're prepared to

face this threat

this is a good thing

but if we find that our bodies are

constantly in this mode

that every day we're worried about

perceived dangers

if we find that our bodies are always in

this state we develop physical illnesses

we take our anxieties out on loved ones

around us and we burn out

next slide please

and so jesus tells us here throughout

this passage especially at the end

that worry is a concern about things we

can't control

according to jesus the essence of

anxiety is to control that which we

and jesus shows us the futility of this

when he says which of you by being

anxious can add a single hour to your

life

so then the natural question is why do

we try to control things that we can't

control

where does anxiety come from

if we look at his words he gives us two

arguments

he says do not be anxious about your

life look at the birds of the air they

neither sow nor reap nor gather into

barns yet your heavenly father feeds

them

ok

so jesus is asking those who hear him to

use their minds

and as a side note do you see how

important this is this is what faith is

is faith an absence of thinking

jesus is saying to look at the birds of

the air and to consider how god feeds

the birds jesus is calling us to think

passing deeper yes

so if we're anxious we aren't thinking

and if we are thinking we aren't

thinking the way jesus wants us to think

we're lying in bed and we can't sleep

because of all the what-ifs running

through our heads

or our obsession with work and overwork

and when we do this we get anxious

because we're listening to our hearts

formula

it's a posture of confidence towards the

world based on what god's revealed

and here jesus gives us two arguments

so the birds of the air speaks of the

fact that god is in charge

look at the birds of the air they do not

sow or reap or store away in barns and

yet your heavenly father feeds them

a cat

jesus is reminding his disciples of

god's providence

prayer

the doctrine of god's providence is such

that god is in charge and everything

that happens to us is not beyond his

hands

uh romans 8 28 for example says that god

works all things for the good of those

who love him who have been called

according to his purpose

foreign

so this doesn't mean that every

individual thing will work out for good

me

but rather in all the things that happen

to us ultimately god works these things

out together for our goodness

so here's where someone might say oh

this means i'm not responsible for my

choices it doesn't matter what i do

bangkok

so in genesis 50 where joseph is sold

into slavery by his brothers

he's made governor of egypt and he's

reunited with his brothers and what does

he say

he says you meant it for evil but god

meant it for good

no the brothers knew that they were

responsible for their own actions and

they wept and repented

so on the one hand we are responsible

for our own actions

and somehow god works through our

choices to bring about good

love

and jesus is saying

if we don't believe in god's providence

that god is ultimately working

everything for our good we cannot deal

with our anxiety

when we realize ultimately how little

control we have

and when we realize who's in control

so philippians 4 says don't be anxious

about anything but by prayer and

petition with thanksgiving present your

request to god philip

so tim keller he says what this means is

when we pray we can thank god in advance

for what he's going to send to us

so parents you know that when you tell

your kids don't put a fork in the

electric socket

you're two three-year-old kids not

your kids think you're ruining the fun

for them every day

from county

but you know in reality you're saving

their lives

and that's what our heavenly father does

with us too

if we know that god is in control

and that of course he is a provider then

why do we struggle

why do

why do we feel like we can't let go of

certain things why does anxiousness

touch every aspect of our life

uh

scholar he says that the reason we

operate out of stress and anxiousness

is because deep down we do not believe

and trust in god's generosity

and we don't have to look very hard to

see that this is true it's evident in

the way that we look at our money and

our resources

i'm including myself in that way by the

way

it's evident in the way that we make

decisions and in our reluctance to love

others sacrificially god can you say it

again it's evident in the way we make

our decisions

we don't trust god to provide and so we

try to become our own providers

that's where someone someone might say

or think of course i trust god i've

trusted god for my salvation

well do we trust god enough to obey his

word and align our lives under his ruler

in other words do we trust god enough to

seek first his kingdom do we believe

jesus's words here

happened

and the reason we don't trust god

according to jesus is

because deep down we don't believe he is

good

see how the flowers of the field grow

they do not labor or spin yet i tell you

that not even solomon in all his

splendor was dressed like one of these

if that is how god clothes the grass of

the field which is here today and

tomorrow is thrown into the fire

will he not much more close you

you have little faith

in

this here is the love of god argument

can you say it again this here is the

love of god arguments

the reason we don't trust god is because

we don't believe deep down that he is

but jesus says your father knows what

you need

he says to look at the grass and if the

grass that's here one day and the next

day is thrown into the fire if the grass

is closed how much more will god clothe

you or me all of us

from

this language of how much more is

actually written all over scripture to

describe god's abundant love

of

so look at romans 5 since we have been

justified by his blood how much more

shall we be saved from god's wrath

through him

for if when we were god's enemies we

were reconciled to him through the death

of his son

how much more having been reconciled

shall we be saved through his life

god who emptied heaven of its greatest

treasure

paul says in romans 8

he who did not spare his own but gave

him up for us all

how will he not also with him graciously

give us all things

you know the refusal to trust god is

what he said

it's like telling god every day father

you emptied heaven of your greatest

treasure and i'm not sure you know how

to organize my weekend

it's like saying father i trust you with

my eternity but i don't trust you with

my life here on earth

so we need to take this argument the

love of god argument and speak it into

our hearts

we need to remind ourselves

we need to remind ourselves you know he

loves you you know he's working things

out for your good

we need to remind ourselves of the

gospel

look to jesus

if god's given us the entire present how

is he not going to give us the ribbon on

it

and when we do this when we let the

gospel sink down into our hearts

we're able to do what jesus says

we can seek first his kingdom

see jesus says that worry is a lack of

proportion

in other words if jesus is in the center

there will be no anxiety

if anything is more important than jesus

we're going to be torn up with anxiety

this means our prayer lives our

fellowship with christians our mission

our ministry our growth and grace

is

in our private lives in our families and

our relationships

with

jesus says if my kingdom comes first

remember the two arguments one he's in

charge

he knows what we need

and bonus three he's good from sandy so

how could we not trust him

and so what does this mean for our work

well it means that we can work with

assurance knowing that god is for us

means that we can work from a posture of

trusting god to providence

but also through the church and other

believers

it means that we can be generous with

our time our money our emotional

resources

that if we trust god to provide we can

work from a posture of generosity

tt

knowing how generous god has been to us

ultimately in jesus christ

and it means that we can work from a

place of rest and contentment

knowing that god's for us

like paul says in romans he who did not

spare his own son but gave him up for us

all how will he not also with him

graciously give us all things

songs

those of us who have believed in jesus

christ and received them by faith

but but it's one thing to enter the

kingdom by faith it's another thing to

walk by faith

it's one thing to believe in jesus

it's another thing to believe jesus

christ

to believe what jesus says and in

particular what he says here in this

passage today

and jesus is saying trust me don't just

believe in me trust what i say

seek first god's kingdom and

righteousness

do you trust him

there are also those of us who might be

saying oh i'm not sure if i can believe

in jesus he sounds great but i'm not

sure i can believe god

god

at the very basic level

there's only two doctrines on which we

can base our lives

either we believe that we are competent

smart and wise enough to run our own

lives

or god is

so for those of us who have trouble

believing

the issue is not that we can't believe

the issue is that we don't actually

doubt ourselves

it's a leap of faith to believe that we

are capable of running our own lives

there's actually more evidence to show

that we

even those who are extremely successful

are making a total mess of some parts of

so jesus invites us to come to him

the devil came to him and said turn

these stones into bread

in other words take things into your own

he refused to take matters into his own

hands he wouldn't decide to disobey god

to get in control from somebody

wrong

and he knew he knew that if he did his

father's will he would be crushed

well the message of the father to the

son is

if you hold on to your life they will

lose theirs but if you let go of your

life if you pay their debt

then they will have theirs back

up

but he was utterly abandoned

how hard is it to unconditionally trust

just imagine how much greater is it to

unconditionally trust knowing that that

is what is in store

when jesus looks at us and says

follow me take your hands off your life

give up your right to rule your own life

let go of your life

and when he says

i let go of my life for you

i gave up control and i was abandoned

but if you give up control for me you'll

only be embraced that's a deal

if you believe not just in jesus but

believe jesus

can you say it again if you believe not

just in jesus

lord we thank you for the promises that

you've made in your words

we thank you that

trust that we we can trust you with our

whole lives

that it's not futile to put our trust in

you

but that's where real life comes from

lord we pray that you would meet us in

the ways that we need to be met today

individually and as a community

continued

","":
Grace
