the past few weeks of advent we've

been looking at the different songs that

celebrate the coming birth of jesus

and so our passage for today is luke 1

to twenty five and i'll invite kunsan to

read the passage to us

foreign

[Music]

so the message that the angel gives to

zechariah is actually one that has been

foretold

malachi 4 the last chapter of the last

book in the old testament records this

promise

so god says that one day at the right

time he will send israel a prophet

who will come to turn the hearts of

their parents to their children in the

hearts of the children

so god promises this in malachi

and then from then on there's 400 years

where the people hear nothing from god

so we fast forward 400 years now to luke

chapter 1 where zechariah the priest is

in the temple by himself

burning incense out there at the altar

behind

that's pretty quick time travel um but

anyways all of a sudden an angel appears

to zechariah and tells him that his

prayer has been heard

and two one

not just a son

this son will go on before the lord in

the spirit and power of elijah to turn

the hearts of the parents to their

children and the disobedient to the

wisdom of the righteous

and upon hearing this zechariah doubts

god and is rebuked by an angel

the angel takes away zechariah's ability

to speak and he leaves the temple mute

so from this perplexing passage there

are at least three things about doubt

that we can learn from this chapter

the condition of doubt

the cure for doubt

and what this means for us

so condition of doubt

so zechariah's response of doubt teaches

us that doubt can happen to any one of

us

he's described as righteous in the sight

of god observing all the lord's

commandments and decrees blamelessly

hoping

this shows us that this is a man who

knows god an upright man who keeps god's

law

zechariah comes to church zechariah is

serving in ministry he's a priest

and the fact that zechariah a righteous

man and a priest doubted god's word

shows us that none of us are exempt from

it can happen to any one of us

and if we go by luke's definition of

doubt

we'll see that all of us to varying

degrees are doubting god's word

i'm a christian i have faith i believe

in jesus i believe he died for my sins

and rose again and that i have new life

with him i'm certainly not doubting

it

i had faith too he was a righteous man

blameless in god's sight

he's on duty he's serving as a priest

he's offering incense to god which

priests were able to only do one time in

their life

and so one commentator writes in

offering the incense zechariah is

performing the greatest ministry of his

priestly career

um

and so the angel meets zechariah in this

context and he says to zechariah that

god has heard your prayer and even

though you're old and your wife

elizabeth is old you're going to have a

son and it's going to be a miracle

he says how can this be

and the angel goes just for that i'm

going to strike you mute and you won't

be able to speak until your son is born

that seems kind of harsh doesn't it

well the reason given here

the angel says is because zechariah did

not believe his words

but what's funny is if you read the chap

the rest of chapter one you'll see mary

in a very similar position

in fact an angel visits mary and tells

her that she is going to have a child

and mary says something very similar

to someone

she also says how will this be since i

am a virgin she also demonstrates doubt

uh

but instead the angel just blesses her

and lives

by so what's up with that

you might read this and think well i

guess it's like a rag got a grumpy angel

and mary got an angel in a better mood

well probably not

maybe

and if we assume that's not the case

then we can see a wonderful nuance about

how the bible views doubt

volleyball please

so the common ways of viewing doubt

today

is that doubt is either all good or all

bad

monkeys

yes so for instance if you're in the

sciences and medical field

that is viewed as a very healthy thing

it makes sense to doubt the supernatural

it's not real

and via

but if you've grown up around religion

and i mean any religion the common view

is that doubting is bad

you shouldn't doubt you should just

believe could make a song

you're in the youth group and you have a

question and you ask the question and

the youth leader looks at you like i

wish i could strike you mute

me

we see instead that there is a kind of

that is a sign of an open mind and a

kind of doubt that is a sign of a closed

mind

and a kind of doubt that's already made

up their mind

and doesn't want answers

a kind of doubt that shows that here's a

person who's really open to the truth

like mary

and is willing to let go of controlling

her own life if she can be shown that

the truth is other than what she thought

it was

and there's a kind of doubt like

zechariah where the questions are only

used as a way of staying in control of

one's life keeping one's mind closed

what kind of doubt is yours

healthy doubt like we see with mary is

something that can be very good

what zechariah also shows us though is

that evidence is oftentimes not the root

cause of unbelief

evidence definitely helps

but in zechariah's case it shows us that

evidence is not enough

he's witnessing a miracle an angel is

speaking to him but that's not enough to

convince him

the differences between the angel's

response to mary and zechariah

is one commentator says the heart

posture behind the doubts

even though zechariah was righteous in

god's sight and even though zechariah

has faith

he doesn't bring his faith into action

call me crime

he could have chosen to act on his

belief in god to trust based on what he

knows about god

but we see that in this particular

instance his faith is not brought into

it's like going into a room seeing a

chair knowing that it can hold you up

but refusing to sit on it

and what this shows us then is faith is

not turning your mind off

of

it's an action

it's a posture of confidence towards the

world based on what god has revealed in

his words

and so faith is an action and a belief

in god's words imagine what life would

be like if we lived believing god's

words

in life

when someone criticizes us at work or at

school and we break down or when we let

anxiety and fear of the future or fear

of loss control us

or when we're living our lives

compromising our values because we want

to be accepted by others

it's all because god's voice is not the

clearest or the loudest

videos

and so to some degree all of us are

doubters we all don't believe god's word

to the extent we should

uh say

if an angel of the lord strikes

zechariah mute for asking a seemingly

innocent question what hope is there for

us in our doubts and unbelief

tattoos

one thing to notice is that zechariah's

unbelief does not cause god to go i'm

fed up with you for asking for a sign

to bring him to a place of assurance

and the angel strikes him mute and says

you will not be able to speak until the

day this happens which will come true at

their appointed time let's time

so zechariah asked for a sign and he was

in effect given a sign

uh igniting

some kind of

so if we skip ahead to verse 57 uh where

the story picks up again

we'll see that the angels words did

indeed come true

zechariah's tongue was loosed and he

could speak

uh yeah

in other words we see god keeping a

promise he made to zechariah

in fact we we see even that

even doubt does not stop god from doing

what he says

even zechariah's own doubts is not an

obstacle to god's ability to keep his

promises

and so we see zechariah's doubt turn to

assurance and joy

because he witnessed god doing what he

said in bringing a baby to a couple in a

physically impossible situation

number

turns to assurance because he sees that

this is the god who keeps his promises

and so the cure to zechariah's doubt is

witnessing god's promise being fulfilled

what god said came true

again even in zechariah leaning towards

unbelief god doesn't say forget you

zachariah

instead through god's actions he's

saying how can i bring you to a point

where you will believe

and he does so by striking him mute as

both a sign and an invitation for

zechariah to believe

one commentator says zechariah learned

from his period of silence

even as an already righteous man

zechariah learned to trust god's word

even more

and we'll see from verse 67 onwards that

zechariah's assurance led to worship and

praise

god

so god brings zechariah from a place of

doubt and unbelief to assurance and

ultimately to praise worship

and so in the story we have a microcosm

of a family

in an impossible situation who god

blesses with a baby

but

as the angel says

god heard the prayer of elizabeth and

zechariah and blessed them with a baby

john the baptist who the one who would

prepare the way for jesus and this leads

him to worship

again

so what does this mean for us

does it mean we're supposed to not be

like zechariah

just have more faith believe god

hate me

and so we see in the story of the old

testament a pattern

so the israelites turn away from god

wanting to do things their own way

they get into trouble they cry out for

help god mercifully delivers them

and the cycle continues

over and over again cycle continues

and

this reveals a fundamental problem

that we deep down distrust god last

thing happens in people what look like

clowning at lao mission

and we see in this passage god moving

zechariah from a place of doubt to

assurance to worship by graciously

showing him that god keeps his promises

but if we look closely at his song we'll

notice he says

praise be to the lord who has raised up

a horn of salvation for us as he said

through his holy prophets long ago

and what's more he says to show mercy to

our ancestors and to remember his holy

covenant the oath he swore to our father

abraham

so in genesis 15 one of the most

remarkable incidents of in abraham's

life

so god promises abraham a child an

offspring that would be so great the

whole world would be blessed through

this child

and this is what zechariah sings of in

his song god honoring his promise to

bless the whole world through abraham's

offspring

but we know something about this promise

that zechariah didn't

like

and god tells him to bring him five

animals

and the text says abraham cut them in

two and arrange them opposite each other

it might be strange to us today but back

then this was the custom of making a

covenant

the animals would be cut and arranged in

two sides and the two parties would walk

between the animals

it's kind of like writing a contract and

signing it today

but this was a symbol that meant

when they walked through it if anyone

failed to uphold their side of the

covenant they would be cut just like the

but then the text says a thick and

dreadful darkness fell over the land

and abraham fell into a deep sleep

and a smoking firepot appeared and

passed between the pieces

on

that night god passed through those

pieces alone

he knew abraham was not going to be able

to perfectly and completely trust him

and so he took it upon himself

and this this is the gospel

salvation in the christian faith is not

god helps those who help themselves

christianity

god comes and says i will take upon

myself the curse of the covenant for

both of us

he comes to abraham and he says abraham

may i be cut off if i don't do my part

of the bargain

darkness came down again

and at the ninth hour jesus on the cross

says he was dying cried my god my god

why have you forsaken me

abraham had no idea what it was going to

cost god to keep the promise he did

on the cross jesus christ experienced

darkness so that we could be brought

into the light

jesus christ experienced alienation so

that we could be given a home

today he experienced the grave so that

we could be given disguise

in the life death resurrection and

ascension of jesus

we see god keeping his promise of

rescuing his people at the cost of his

own life

and if that's true

which it is

then what reason do we have now to not

trust god

what is stopping us from completely

trusting that god

some of us believe the promise of

success

if only i'm successful in my work then

i'll be ok

the promise of relationship if only i

get married then i'll be okay

or if only i look a certain way if only

i parent my kids well if only i'm a good

enough person then i'll be ok

these are all promises

but if we make these promises our center

will only be destroyed

if we live for our work we're filled

with anxiety and what happens to us when

we lose our jobs

if we live for a relationship what

happens to us when it ends

if we live for our kids what happens

when they grow up and become independent

if whatever we're living for is taken

away and it will be one day we will be

destroyed

these promises are empty

and the satisfaction that they bring is

only temporary at best

sexual

so tim keller he says

if we look to some created thing to give

us the meaning of

give us meaning hope and happiness that

only god himself can give

it will eventually fail to deliver

these promises will only let us down

but jesus christ is the only one whose

promises are made good

food

zechariah was moved from doubt to

assurance to worship because he saw god

keeping his promise to him

sometimes

and we also seen that god's intimate

care of a family as he works out his

grand plan of salvation on that day god

answered two promises

that of a son for zechariah and of a

savior for the world

we know what it costs god to keep his

promise to give us life he's given us

every possible evidence what is there

now to stop us from trusting him

yet

if the cross resurrection and ascension

are the ultimate expressions of god's

ability and willingness to keep his own

we can look at all of god's promises

even the ones that are yet to be

fulfilled and live with hope

the apostle paul writes in second

corinthians

for no matter how many promises god has

made they are yes in christ

christ

he's promised one day to wipe away every

tear from our eyes

he's promised to work out everything

ultimately for our good

time

he's promised to be with us

and he's promised to come again and

completely make things right the second

advent

yeah

so as we live in between the cross and

resurrection and the second advent would

we live with hope

what areas in your life are you having

trouble believing god bring that to him

and trust him with your life believe him

is

this christmas remember how far god was

willing to go

to make good on his promises

what's this

lenny

father would you help us to believe

today that you are the god who keeps his

promises help us to look to jesus and be

reminded that because jesus experienced

the darkness you have shown us your life

because you experienced alienation

you've promised us a home

because you experienced the grave you've

given us the skies

help us to not be afraid and to be

filled with a deep assurance knowing

that we can stake our lives on your word

hello

lord jesus would your love become a deep

bright reality that fills our hearts and

leads us into action today

jesus
