welcome

before we read the text for today i just

want to welcome any of you that may be

and i think i speak on behalf of the

entire church when i say

that we look forward to getting to speak

with you getting to know you

guys

you know we're united

in our desire to love and care for

bangkok

[Music]

you know we we really what

when it comes down to it just to make it

simple

we long to see our own lives changed by

the grace of god

and praying that our neighbors our

friends our colleagues that they would

come to know

the gods

now here we are just a couple of days

into a new year

but in reality

a lot of the pain and fear

and hardship from last year it didn't

just disappear a couple of days ago

no here in this new year where we're

likely to find ourselves in the midst of

the same

hard things the same difficulties

with

but the hope

that comes through jesus christ is

eternal now

god does not change

and the center of the christian faith is

an

unshakable immovable everlasting hope

christian

is is a hope that cannot be changed

in the book of hebrews we read this in

chapter 13 8

jesus christ

is the same

yesterday

today

this truth gives us a good and sure hope

jesus christ is the same today in this

new year

he does

also not change

and as we begin this new year let us

rest

in the god that does not change

jesus christ is alive

he has to put some pressure on you and

he's ruling over this world that he has

created

now our text today is from the psalms

god

and tonight today we'll be beginning the

season this series of psalms

by reading psalm 61

and this psalm is a psalm of david king

david wrote this god

now the psalms this part of the bible

they're actually songs

and just as singing is so expressive

in the psalms we see the full

range

you might say that we see our own lives

our own hearts on display

so as you hear this psalm read today as

you read it to yourself

they found

right now at the beginning of this new

year

what thoughts what dreams what fears

occupy

what is

so consider all of this and listen to

the word of god

some of us you know we have joyful

hearts today and some of us are full of

sorrow

indeed

some of us feel safe and others may be

experiencing a sense of dread or

no matter how we are today god we ask

that you would meet us here in these

circumstances

in thai and i will

follow reading in english this is psalm

61. this is the word of god

foreign

psalm 61

to the choir master with stringed

instruments

of david

hear my cry o god

listen to my prayer

from the end of the earth i call to you

and my heart is faint

lead me to the rock that is higher than

i

for you have been my refuge

a strong tower against the enemy

let me dwell in your tent forever let me

take refuge under the shelter

of your wings

saila

for you o god have heard my vows you've

given me the heritage of those who fear

your name

prolong the life of the king may his

years endure to all generations

may he be enthroned forever before god

appoint steadfast love and faithfulness

to watch over him

so will i ever sing praises to your name

as i perform my vows

day

after day this is the word of god

fight or flight

if you happen to major in psychology

in your college studies

and i know a couple of you did

you remember learning about the human

body's fight or flight response

this is when

the body senses some danger or potential

harm to ourselves

and we either fight to defend ourselves

or we try to escape

and what we're seeking what we're after

when we run

when we try to escape is safety

we're seeking a place of

protection from harm now

we're seeking refuge

you know this is a major theme in just

about any action movie

sometimes they fight and then they flee

and they have no choice sometimes they

have to fight

or they realize the grain the danger is

so great and they have to get away and

they flee

and

there are a lot of explosions and car

chases and exciting camera angles

where do we find where do we find solace

and peace when the world is falling

apart around us

james

these are the very questions that the

psalms

deal with

david is crying out to god for help

called from now the words here from the

ends of the earth they they may have

david being far

from jerusalem far from the temple

but certainly he's feeling

faint he says he's he's feeling the

weight

all that is happening my heart is faint

at the core of the christian faith is

the premise that we

need rescue

christians

the basic teaching of many of the

world's religions

is is that you do a set of teachings or

or follow a certain set of laws

or practice a set of rituals you can

help yourself

so if you do this and if you

pray this and you give this then you

save yourself you can redefine yourself

and we need the saving work of god

through jesus christ to rescue us

we can't create a safe place in our own

sinfulness

if our sinfulness is the problem

we can't give our own restless hearts

true and lasting rest that must come

from outside of ourselves

if we could solve our problems doesn't

it seem fair that we would have by now

now

from

if humanity evolved to a place of peace

and rest and and goodness it it

certainly seems reasonable that

the christian belief

is that we

need god

to set everything right

up

because i can't help myself i can't save

myself only you can do that in me oh god

actually

as we read the psalms many of them

written by david

see that he experiences

he experiences the saving of god

and he incorporates these these

beautiful descriptions that that

underscore

he says let me dwell

in your

david writes let me take refuge under

the shelter of your wings

you know perhaps the reference to the

tent is is to the tabernacle of god

the place where god dwells

david is praying god let me be

in your presence let me be with you

forever

david praise god protect my life protect

my soul like a like a mother bird drapes

her wing over her babies

this picture of god just like a mother

bird covering us protecting us

protecting us from harm

david is praying this let me rest in you

oh god in this way right here right now

anytime

david isn't rescued

from the danger of his adversary

god saves us

in the midst of harm god is present with

us whatever may come

one of the true realities of this life

is that sickness and death are present

and real

fast

and being a christian following god does

not

you know crying out the god for saving

does not mean

that we won't experience the harsh

realities of this broken world

you see god entered into

our suffering

jesus came to live a life that we cannot

live

so christian come out

of that

and all of this is rooted in the

promises of god

in verse 5 david writes this you have

given me

the heritage of those who fear your name

looking at the heritage that god has

given generations that have experienced

god's leading and provisions

and as a part of the community of god

family of god

david has received

the promises of god's covenant

confession

now at this time in history

and for david

this these promises included the promise

of the land

and the promise that god would protect

them and that god would lead them

but for us

we see

how god's promises included the

fulfillment of the promised

messiah

the one that would come

to make all things right the one that

would come

to reconcile

broken sinners to a holy god

and david's prayer his song here in

it turns to petitions for the king

there may be two possible readings of

these verses david may be referring to

himself as king of israel

that god would bless his earthly rule of

god's people and and that god would

bless future generations through a wise

and faithful

ruling

but it's likely that david is is turning

his prayer now to the promised king to

come

in

but at a deeper level this royal

position of king it held a theological

reflected the power

the glory the majesty of the divine king

i'm not getting

hungry

so david turns his prayer

and points ahead to the true king that

would come and establish his good and

perfect kingdom forever

who will establish his kingdom and rule

his rule and reign will have no end

footage

and as he sings about this truth david's

heart is stirred to

he says so will i ever sing praises to

your name as i perform my vows

when we understand who

god is

and what god has done through the person

and work of jesus

christ

when we understand that it moves us to a

place

of worship

praising god for his goodness and for

the present and eternal refuge that he

is

if you are a christian if you're someone

that says hey i believe and i follow

jesus i'm a christian harmony

if that is true for you be reminded

of the god that is present

and as you walk into this new year with

the challenges of of last year be

reminded of god's good plan

and if you're someone that would say you

know i'm not a christian that's awesome

and to you first of all let's say we are

so thankful that you are here

and we value your questions and and your

doubts and your thoughts on all of this

do you sense a longing in your own heart

for refuge for safety

this refuge that that david is singing

about

we are sinners we commit sin and these

sins separate us from god

our sinfulness has broken our

relationship

and friends when we confess

when we confess our sin to god he

forgives us

we speak of the cross or the the image

the symbol of christianity the cross

and the cross is where jesus gave

himself for us it's where he died for

our sins

it's where he gave himself that we may

have

new

and that's why david can write and pray

that he'll dwell in the tent of god

and resurrection of jesus christ

has brought us

near to god again

so

look to jesus and find

refuge for your souls

refuge from the darkness and brokenness

these truths encourage us and lead us in

all things

think about the questions that we ask

ourselves

today how are we doing at

throughout history there have been many

different kinds of teachings that have

helped to teach christian doctrines

his

a catechism which we'll read a bit from

here a catechism is a

confessional document that that helps to

teach people about the truth of god

and this this is a question from the

heidelberg catechism

and i want us to just let this sink in

i'm going to read to it read it read to

us in english and then kiel is going to

to read the the thai but i want you to

think about all that we've just been

talking about

and let me tell us all that this would

be a great question to ask ourselves

each and every day this year

imagine

what

is my only comfort

in life

and death

that i am not my own

but belong with body and soul both in

life and in death

to my faithful savior jesus christ

he has paid

fully paid for all my sins with his

precious blood

and has set me free from all the power

of the devil

he also preserves me in such a way

that without the will

of my heavenly father

not a hair can fall

from my head

indeed all things

must work

together

for my salvation

therefore by his holy spirit

he also assures me of eternal life and

makes me heartily willing

and ready

from now on

to live

for him

in the power the saving power

of jesus christ

if you look to him for your salvation

even in the midst of our own sin

you made a way that we could be

reconciled to you

even though we rebelled against you

you demonstrated your great love through

the sacrificial death of jesus

to know that whatever may come in our

own lives and in this world that

we ask and pray all of this in your holy

name lord jesus

you

","":
Grace
