year we spend some time going

through the psalms and we look at 10

psalms each year

this year is no different we're

currently in our series on the psalms

and what we're doing is we're taking the

psalm in its entirety and we're seeing

what it teaches us about who god is and

what that means for our relationship

with him

so today we get to psalm 62 and i'll

invite bee to read the text to us and

thai

songs

[Music]

let's pray lord jesus we thank you for

your word today we thank you that you

are here with us in spirit and lord we

pray that

as your word it's preached lord that you

would touch our hearts through the power

of your holy spirit praise in jesus name

amen

so psalm 62

now the psalms have often been called

the prayer book of the bible and that's

a really fitting name

other places in the bible like the

lord's prayer teaches us what to pray

but the book of psalms teaches us how to

pray

the psalms take us deep into our own

hearts a thousand times faster than we

would go by ourselves

they're raw emotional even dark at times

but they also don't just vent

they pray their feelings they take them

into the presence of god until they

change them or understand them

from

every single possible human situation is

described and depicted in the psalms and

we're shown and instructed how to pray

how to address god in these various

situations

so psalm 62 is a prayer it's written by

david when he was facing distress

and it tells us

that he is in a time of trouble and pain

that we can say

hello

so verses three and four show us that he

describes himself as a leaning wall a

tottering fence

the idea here is that he is so

overwhelmed that he is about to tip over

something

the text doesn't tell us what exactly

david is facing but it tells us that

he's wary he's exhausted he's

overwhelmed

and in this situation he writes psalm

62.

and we might expect that because david

is exhausted and weary this psalm will

be one of discouragement

but what we actually see is a psalm of

hope

david is encouraging himself to rest in

god alone

but

this psalm teaches us three things that

we can learn about rest

the importance of rest

where do we usually look for it and how

do we get it

so

our culture today in bangkok glorifies

overwork and burnout

many of us are working long hours

working all day even working all night

long

and while it's true that work and rest

are a pair that come together the bible

actually teaches us that the opposite of

rest is not work but restlessness

not knowing what it's like to become

always feeling on edge always under

pressure trying to prove ourselves

david is under stress the pressure is so

great that he is about to tip over.

and in verses 1 and 5 david states that

it's only for god alone that his soul

waits in silence

do you see how powerful this is

he's being targeted he's being attacked

and in circumstances that would lead him

to be overwhelmed fearful

anxious and restless

he's experiencing the deep soul rest

that is available for anyone who would

come to the god of the son

of

now most of us aren't being chased by

enemies like david usually is

but we all know what it's like to be

restless

to be filled with fear pain regret

worries about the future to the point of

being overwhelmed

we have to have this job or we won't

make it this relationship needs to

happen or things will not be okay

my kids need to get into the school or i

need to get into this college or make

the sports team or things won't be ok

our souls are never silent and facing

trouble only brings this out we all know

what it's like to be restless

last year a global tech company

published a study of the top 50

overworked cities in the world

they defined overwork as full-time

employees who work more than 48 hours

each week

so they looked at 50 cities across the

world

and guess what place bangkok was on that

list

bangkok was the third most overworked

city in the world just behind

singapore and hong kong

singapore hong kong also on that list

bangkok had the second worst work life

balance just behind malaysia it was

number two then it is

well the first reason is technology our

work is far more accessible now than it

ever was before

technology

there's no escape we can work from

anywhere so we work from everywhere even

our homes

our competitors are no longer just the

store across the street but whatever

product that we're producing we're not

competing with

another reason for our overwork and

restlessness is cultural

it used to be that we got our identities

and value from being part of a family or

a community

pension

so being a son a daughter a husband or

wife a friend or a neighbor

and in many parts of thailand it's still

that way but in bangkok for many people

especially in the professional world

it's changing

the way we view value and worth is

changing from something that is given to

us to something we need to achieve and

earn

monthly

now for many of us

our work is how we get our value and

worth how much money we make the social

class or status that our work gives us

our work is now used to prove ourselves

there's never been a more restless

culture

the question is what do we do with our

restlessness where do we look to to cure

our restlessness

so this psalm tells us two places that

we try to look for rest two things that

we trust in in the hopes that our

restlessness is cured

verse 9 tells us that we look to status

in position and verse 10 tells us we

look to accumulating wealth

in verse 9 we read though those of

lowest state are but a breath those of

highest state are a delusion

what david is saying is that wherever we

fall on the spectrum of human status no

matter what our class is if we are high

or low class

the reality is is that our status

is lighter than the breath and it will

not last

verse 10 we read if rich is increased

set not your heart on them and what

david isn't saying is that there's

anything

outright wrong with having money or

financial success

what are you saying is not to look to

money to provide us rest for our souls

to not set our hearts on money

the bible talks a lot about money jesus

often spoke about money and possessions

one of the reasons for this is because

it's in our nature both ancient and

modern people to view money as a

functional savior

we think if i can just have enough i'll

be okay

if i can just have certain resources

then my heart will be at rest

okay

well what these two verses teach us

is that we often look to the attainment

of status or wealth as a way to provide

our soul's rest

what david is saying is no matter if

you're rich or you don't have a lot of

money if your class is low or if you're

really successful if you look for rest

in these things you will be let down

i think

there's a lot of reasons but i'll give

you one who is writing this song

nobody in israel had higher status power

or wealth than king david

yet even he recognizes that there is a

pressure a restlessness in his soul that

all the power and wealth in the world

cannot fix

it

despite advances in technology and

public health despite the world today

being wealthier and more comfortable

than it has ever been

we are still constantly discontent and

disappointed

that life doesn't come together as well

as we want it to

nailout

are countless of interviews of people

who have been successful and are still

and studies show us that there is a weak

correlation between wealth and

contentment

and that the more prosperous a society

grows the more common is depression

you see it's a paradox the very things

we look to in order to cure our

restlessness the pursuit of status money

identity value worth is also what makes

us restless

that's why even when we're resting

even when we're not doing anything we're

not completely still we're not

completely silent like david is

there's a deeper restlessness

and just like sleep experts say that

sleep will not

really refresh us at night unless we get

a certain type of sleep they call it rem

just like if we don't get rem sleep and

we won't be refreshed if we just get

physical rest but not our deep soul rest

we'll still be restless

better circumstances money status

relationships that's not going to cure

we need the deep soul rest the type of

spiritual rest david has here that goes

beyond our physical need to rest

this type of rest goes beyond our

circumstances and allows us to

experience peace in the midst of

adversity

and rest in the midst of unknown

circumstances

well we've already looked at different

ways that we try to cure our

restlessness

and if we keep thinking that the thing

that gives us lasting rest and peace can

be found we will be put on a treadmill

going through houses spouses jobs

it puts us on a treadmill

but a treadmill never goes anywhere it

just gets faster and faster and

eventually we burn out despair or become

cynical it doesn't work

david however learned to tell his soul

that i need only one thing to survive

and thrive and i have

this is the key to understanding the sum

and understanding the deep soul rest

that we long for

the assumption is that god alone will

not be enough we need something else to

make us happy or secure

but david says i need only god and his

all-powerful fatherly love and care

everything else is expendable

the reason we're discontent the reason

we're restless is because we were

created for relationship with god

and when that relationship isn't there

we're living out of sync with our

purpose and we're left

if a fish tries to live like an elephant

or an eagle or any other animal other

than a fish it will constantly be

frustrated because that's not what it's

designed for

um

and if we put our ultimate hope in

anything other than god if we put our

hope in money status material

possessions relationships

if we make these things our ultimate

hope we will be shaken

and we are

we are shaken

but david's security doesn't come from

his circumstances

the reason he says he can't be shaken is

because he's realized that he doesn't

need anything else beside god's

that god is david's rock in salvation

and fortress and he will not be shaken

don't you want that kind of rest

god's rest gives us courage in the face

of the storm

gives us the ability to press on even if

there's hardship all around

me from

it gives our soul a balance an eq

equilibrium in the midst of shifting

circumstances and unknown futures

it gives us even peace in the face of

death

so how do we get this rest

do we just say to our hearts love god

more come on just put god at the center

a lot of people who are working like

crazy and are looking for spiritual rest

they say i'm going to be a christian i'm

going to turn my life around i'm going

to repent of my sins

it's religious work but it's work all

the same

and that will not change our hearts

instead what changes our hearts is the

last two verses of this psalm

the reason david can have such a deep

and profound trust and rest in god

it's because he recognizes the only

thing he can depend on is god's strength

god's love and god's justice

he says to you o lord belong steadfast

love for you will render to a man

according to his work

the question is how could god be both

loving and just

if we were held only to our own

standards

on judgement day if we were held

accountable for all the things that we

say people should do

none of us would pass that test

every person with a heart looks at the

injustice in the world and hopes for a

world where things are made right

we're all going to be cut off

how could god be infinitely just and

punish all sin and infinitely loving and

forgive us

foreign

on the cross jesus cried out in agony he

cried out with complete and utter

restlessness my god my god why have you

forsaken me

he was cut off from the source of

eternal rest and

jesus christ was the only one who put

all his ultimate hope in god and he was

ignored he was turned away

so that when we place our whole ultimate

hope in god we will never be shaken

so that when we place our ultimate hope

in god we can have the deep eternal soul

rest that our hearts are longing for

jesus was thrown into the heart of the

storm so that we could have the courage

to face whatever storms come our way

please

jesus was forsaken so that you know that

regardless of what your circumstances

are

you can have total confidence in god's

wisdom and love in your life

prayers

what's finished the reason for our

restlessness the self-justifying work he

does that move you does that melt your

heart

i don't know if you believe in jesus or

if you believe all that he's done all

this for you

but i urge you to do everything in your

power to find out because how else are

you going to have this rest

yes

what else can you look to what else can

we look to to provide the deep soul rest

that we're all longing for

but here right

one more thing that david does in verse

five that we

should definitely do as well

in verse 1 david says for god alone my

soul waits in silence

why is it different what is he doing

he's taking what he knows to be true

what he believes and he's speaking to

his soul

rule

because he knows and we all know that

what we know to be true about god isn't

always our lived experience

we still

have anxiety we still have fear

we still get angry

we often times forget that we belong to

god

and so what david's doing is he's

reminding himself to take what he knows

to be true about god and to work it into

his life and heart

president

and the great truth of the bible that

david reminds himself

the whole bible is that salvation comes

from god alone not from ourselves or any

effort that we can

jesus christ died on the cross for our

sins that's how god could be infinitely

just because all sin was punished

and that's also how god could be

infinitely loving because he absorbed it

all himself at infinite cost to himself

use the gospel on yourself remind

yourself of what he's done

tim keller he calls the gospel of fire

in our lives

and the natural condition of the human

heart is to forget the gospel and turn

to self-justification

and we can hide this when things are

going well

but when failure criticism or something

goes wrong we start working longer hours

we start making longer lists

on

we're doing all that to try to generate

the heat ourselves but what we need to

do is return to the fire remind

ourselves of the gospel

richard lovelace an author he wrote a

book called dynamics of spiritual life

and he basically says this

richard lovelace

dynamics of spiritual life

if we start each day not resting on the

accepting love of god and sacrifice of

jesus but on our present achievements

we will not be moved sorry we will be

moved to either discouragement and

apathy or self-righteousness and

idolatry that achieves a false sense of

peace

but the gospel faith that is able to

warm itself at the fire of god's love

and what jesus has done for us

instead of having to steal love and

self-acceptance from all these other

places

that is the very root of peace

remind yourselves remind ourselves of

what jesus

as we partake in the lord's supper today

would we remember what jesus has done

come to jesus warm yourself at the fire

of the gospel and find deep eternal rest

lord jesus

some of us a lot of us here

myself included our restless lord

and though we know your truth we know

what you've done lord
