i know we have some visitors here this<\/p>\n
evening and we want to say welcome to<\/p>\n
you um<\/p>\n

and thankfully<\/p>\n
you don't have to listen to me speak<\/p>\n
thai the entire time tonight because<\/p>\n
peace employment is here to translate<\/p>\n
the sermon for us<\/p>\n
so tonight we're going to be<\/p>\n
continuing<\/p>\n
a series we've been in in the psalms<\/p>\n
these texts were written to be sung<\/p>\n
and just in the same way that that<\/p>\n
singing is<\/p>\n
so expressive<\/p>\n
in the psalms we find this this full<\/p>\n
range<\/p>\n
you know when you read the psalms you<\/p>\n
might find yourself saying wow that's<\/p>\n
that's me you know<\/p>\n
we see our own hearts like open in the<\/p>\n
psalms<\/p>\n
so as we read this psalm tonight we're<\/p>\n
going to be reading psalm 67<\/p>\n
as you read it and<\/p>\n
allow it to meet you<\/p>\n
where you are in your life right now<\/p>\n
you know think to yourself<\/p>\n
how am i doing how am i doing right now<\/p>\n
how am i how am i feeling what are my<\/p>\n
thoughts my dreams or what<\/p>\n
fears are occupying my mind and my heart<\/p>\n
these days<\/p>\n
i'm<\/p>\n
what's troubling you what are you unsure<\/p>\n
and consider all of these things<\/p>\n
consider the ways that you're answering<\/p>\n
these questions and listen<\/p>\n
to the word of god<\/p>\n
listen to the word of god because<\/p>\n
god speaks to us through<\/p>\n
the bible<\/p>\n
but we're grateful for the way that god<\/p>\n
has provided for this community<\/p>\n
you know look around this room<\/p>\n
we in great city we're at people from<\/p>\n
different backgrounds from many nations<\/p>\n
multiple languages<\/p>\n
we're grateful that god has communicated<\/p>\n
to this world through his spirit<\/p>\n
through the person and work of jesus<\/p>\n
and through his word<\/p>\n
and today just as we've been singing<\/p>\n
songs of praise and thai and in english<\/p>\n
we also turn to the bible to read the<\/p>\n
text in both languages as well<\/p>\n
let me pray for us as we begin<\/p>\n
god we thank you that we can gather<\/p>\n
today<\/p>\n
for worship of you and to hear from your<\/p>\n
lord<\/p>\n
some of us have joyful hearts you know<\/p>\n
we become and we feel<\/p>\n
great like things are wonderful<\/p>\n
and yet some of us really feel this<\/p>\n
sense of dread we feel<\/p>\n
sorrowful<\/p>\n
some of us feel at peace some of us are<\/p>\n
are weird we're tired<\/p>\n
some of us feel safe and others may<\/p>\n
be experiencing<\/p>\n
yeah this sense of fear what's what's<\/p>\n
next<\/p>\n
no matter how we are today god and<\/p>\n
whatever we're experiencing in this<\/p>\n
spectrum<\/p>\n
we ask god that you would meet us here<\/p>\n
in these circumstances<\/p>\n
the reality is that we need<\/p>\n
you we need to hear from you all of us<\/p>\n
we need to know that you're god we need<\/p>\n
to know that you're good<\/p>\n
that you love this<\/p>\n
this beautiful and yet broken world<\/p>\n
god would you open our hearts and our<\/p>\n
minds to your truth<\/p>\n
would you speak to us through your words<\/p>\n
we pray all of this asking this<\/p>\n
in your holy name lord jesus amen<\/p>\n
amen<\/p>\n
will read the text in thai<\/p>\n
and then we will read it again<\/p>\n
in english<\/p>\n
foreign<\/p>\n
fire master<\/p>\n
with string instruments<\/p>\n
a psalm<\/p>\n
may god be gracious to us<\/p>\n
and bless us and make his face to shine<\/p>\n
upon us<\/p>\n
that your way may be known on earth your<\/p>\n
saving power among all nations<\/p>\n
let the peoples praise you o god let all<\/p>\n
the peoples praise you<\/p>\n
let the nations be glad and sing for joy<\/p>\n
for you judge the peoples with equity<\/p>\n
and guide the nations<\/p>\n
upon earth<\/p>\n
the earth has yielded its increase<\/p>\n
god<\/p>\n
our god<\/p>\n
shall bless us<\/p>\n
god shall bless us let all the ends of<\/p>\n
the earth fear him<\/p>\n
this is the word of god<\/p>\n
today as we've gathered for worship<\/p>\n
we've we've already sung songs together<\/p>\n
songs of praise<\/p>\n
songs about who god is what god has done<\/p>\n
and these are songs of praise that we're<\/p>\n
singing<\/p>\n
to god<\/p>\n
honoring god worshiping god celebrating<\/p>\n
in fact we're doing exactly what this<\/p>\n
psalm<\/p>\n
this song is all about listen<\/p>\n
god bless<\/p>\n
you let the peoples<\/p>\n
praise you oh god let all the peoples<\/p>\n
praise you<\/p>\n
this is what the psalmist writes and<\/p>\n
this is what we have come to do<\/p>\n
uh as a musician<\/p>\n
i'm really interested<\/p>\n
in the lyrical content of the song<\/p>\n
you know i want to know what what is<\/p>\n
being sung what is being communicated<\/p>\n
which instruments are being used take<\/p>\n
them with the eye<\/p>\n
and and many of the psalms give<\/p>\n
reference not just to the author or the<\/p>\n
writer of the song but also instructions<\/p>\n
for instrumentation<\/p>\n
so right here we read instructions it<\/p>\n
says to the choir master the song leader<\/p>\n
with stringed instruments<\/p>\n
i find this notation this little note<\/p>\n
helpful<\/p>\n
because these small details help me<\/p>\n
remember that this is a real song<\/p>\n
written<\/p>\n
hundreds of years ago<\/p>\n
to be played and sung<\/p>\n
by the people<\/p>\n
in worship of god<\/p>\n
scholars estimate that this psalm psalm<\/p>\n
may have been composed<\/p>\n
around the time of israel's exile<\/p>\n
captivity<\/p>\n
hey<\/p>\n
yeah probably around maybe around 539<\/p>\n
bc<\/p>\n
before christ oh man<\/p>\n
now these details you know they help<\/p>\n
they help us because<\/p>\n
it shows us what was happening in the<\/p>\n
lives<\/p>\n
of those that wrote this song and those<\/p>\n
that were singing into god<\/p>\n
they didn't think<\/p>\n
the song begins<\/p>\n
with<\/p>\n
a prayer and a request<\/p>\n
of god it's it's a beautiful phrase<\/p>\n
i don't believe<\/p>\n
and bless us and make his face<\/p>\n
shine<\/p>\n
in the book of numbers<\/p>\n
chapter 6 god<\/p>\n
speaks through moses and directs aaron<\/p>\n
to pronounce a blessing over the people<\/p>\n
of israel<\/p>\n
the lord spoke to moses saying<\/p>\n
speak to aaron and his sons saying thus<\/p>\n
you shall bless the people of israel you<\/p>\n
shall say to them<\/p>\n
the lord bless you and keep you the lord<\/p>\n
make his face to shine<\/p>\n
upon you and be gracious to you<\/p>\n
the lord lift up his countenance upon<\/p>\n
you and give you peace<\/p>\n
so shall they put my name<\/p>\n
upon the people of israel and i will<\/p>\n
bless them<\/p>\n
um<\/p>\n
turning his face to shine<\/p>\n
god lifting up his countenance his<\/p>\n
visage to bless the people<\/p>\n
oh<\/p>\n
to bless the people with his grace with<\/p>\n
his peace<\/p>\n
and give them a reminder of their<\/p>\n
identity as god's people<\/p>\n
you see that in verse 27 god says<\/p>\n
so shall they put my name upon the<\/p>\n
people of israel<\/p>\n
god pronouncing they are mine they<\/p>\n
belong to me and i will bless them<\/p>\n
from israel<\/p>\n
king david used similar phrasing in<\/p>\n
4.<\/p>\n
in verse 6 he said wrote this<\/p>\n
there are many who say who will show us<\/p>\n
some good<\/p>\n
lift up the light of your face upon us<\/p>\n
oh lord<\/p>\n
and here in psalm 67 the psalmist is<\/p>\n
asking for praying for<\/p>\n
god's<\/p>\n
blessing<\/p>\n
praying for god's blessing<\/p>\n
so<\/p>\n
that look at verse 2<\/p>\n
your way may be known on earth your<\/p>\n
the psalmist is calling on god to bless<\/p>\n
not only israel but the whole entire<\/p>\n
earth<\/p>\n
that the knowledge of god about what god<\/p>\n
has done who god is<\/p>\n
the way of god the text says that that<\/p>\n
all this would be known on earth<\/p>\n
among all nations all nations all people<\/p>\n
in the texas speaking beyond just<\/p>\n
knowing about god<\/p>\n
right i mean to know god is to know<\/p>\n
details about god about god's character<\/p>\n
yes<\/p>\n
but the christian faith goes beyond just<\/p>\n
head knowledge<\/p>\n
it's about knowing who god is and what<\/p>\n
god has done and please seen your hope<\/p>\n
in god<\/p>\n
believing in<\/p>\n
god placing our trust<\/p>\n
same you are the one oh god there are no<\/p>\n
other gods let's show our own goods<\/p>\n
imagine<\/p>\n
imagine you ask a man a question like<\/p>\n
this tell me<\/p>\n
about your wife<\/p>\n
well she's a mother and she's a daughter<\/p>\n
and she's a sister<\/p>\n
and she likes spending time with her<\/p>\n
family and friends<\/p>\n
about<\/p>\n
the man's spouse right<\/p>\n
but then you ask a follow-up question<\/p>\n
like this but what does she mean<\/p>\n
to you<\/p>\n
you would likely get a variety of<\/p>\n
answers but but really they would fall<\/p>\n
likely fall into two<\/p>\n
categories<\/p>\n
one would be like this<\/p>\n
well<\/p>\n
she's my wife i just told you about it<\/p>\n
or something like this she is precious<\/p>\n
to me<\/p>\n
i'm grateful for who she is and the<\/p>\n
qualities that she has<\/p>\n
the way she cares for me and for others<\/p>\n
i love her<\/p>\n
one describes<\/p>\n
knowing about someone and the other<\/p>\n
displays the intimacy<\/p>\n
of their relationships<\/p>\n
the difference between knowing about god<\/p>\n
and honoring loving<\/p>\n
believing in god having our hearts<\/p>\n
captivated<\/p>\n
so this verse you know it's speaking<\/p>\n
beyond just<\/p>\n
knowing<\/p>\n
about god because the psalmist is<\/p>\n
praying that god's salvation would be<\/p>\n
known<\/p>\n
you see the words used here in verse 2<\/p>\n
saving power<\/p>\n
speaking of the rescue that<\/p>\n
only god can provide this is speaking of<\/p>\n
salvation<\/p>\n
they're putting to it all<\/p>\n
let's see<\/p>\n
at the heart of christian doctrine and<\/p>\n
christian faith is the teaching that we<\/p>\n
are sinners<\/p>\n
in need of a savior<\/p>\n
created all things god made humans in<\/p>\n
his image the bible says<\/p>\n
but we have acted<\/p>\n
contrary to god's good plan and desires<\/p>\n
we've misused what god has given up<\/p>\n
we've said yes to that which god has<\/p>\n
said do not do or<\/p>\n
this is not my desire for you<\/p>\n
to<\/p>\n
know in his mercy<\/p>\n
god reveals our sin to us and and shows<\/p>\n
us our need to be<\/p>\n
reconciled to him<\/p>\n
what god desires is that<\/p>\n
we are led and moved from<\/p>\n
theology<\/p>\n
to doxology<\/p>\n
that is our our knowledge of who god is<\/p>\n
that is<\/p>\n
what god desires<\/p>\n
we were made to know him we were made to<\/p>\n
be in communion with god<\/p>\n
don't sign him back to him<\/p>\n
we were made to know him made to worship<\/p>\n
him and to know his love for us<\/p>\n
and the psalmist is writing this this is<\/p>\n
a psalm of praise<\/p>\n
the changed heart<\/p>\n
the one that knows the saving power of<\/p>\n
will worship god that's it<\/p>\n
the one that knows that has experienced<\/p>\n
god's saving power will praise<\/p>\n
and then later in verse 5 perhaps this<\/p>\n
is the the chorus of this song it's<\/p>\n
repeated<\/p>\n
a couple of times<\/p>\n
the psalmist writes let<\/p>\n
the peoples praise you o god let all the<\/p>\n
peoples praise you<\/p>\n
for you judge the people with equity you<\/p>\n
you guide the nations upon the earth<\/p>\n
he's faithful to lead us and to provide<\/p>\n
for us<\/p>\n
now this theme of exuberant joy<\/p>\n
and praise that continues through these<\/p>\n
final verses of<\/p>\n
the people praising god all the people<\/p>\n
praising god<\/p>\n
and the earth being blessed<\/p>\n
by god and flourishing yielding its<\/p>\n
increase<\/p>\n
and god pronouncing bringing blessing<\/p>\n
upon the people a downfall boy<\/p>\n
it's all quite beautiful isn't it<\/p>\n
but it was like man<\/p>\n
a picture of the fullness and blessing<\/p>\n
that god intends<\/p>\n
so how do we connect this<\/p>\n
our own hearts<\/p>\n
how are we to step into this what do we<\/p>\n
make of this<\/p>\n
i would encourage us to remember that<\/p>\n
this is a song<\/p>\n
hello<\/p>\n
do i know god in a way that brings forth<\/p>\n
like the psalmist is writing about naomi<\/p>\n
have i known the gladness of god<\/p>\n
and is there now a gladness and a joy in<\/p>\n
my heart towards god<\/p>\n
this psalm ends with a final<\/p>\n
pronouncement of god's<\/p>\n
blessing god shall bless us it says<\/p>\n
god will do this<\/p>\n
and the final phrase let all the ends of<\/p>\n
they caused<\/p>\n
as was mentioned earlier<\/p>\n
scholars placed this psalm about<\/p>\n
540 years before<\/p>\n
and the people of israel they believed<\/p>\n
they knew that god would demonstrate his<\/p>\n
saving power to the nations as the saul<\/p>\n
mentions by sending one<\/p>\n
that would save the savior the messiah<\/p>\n
as this psalm calls out for god to bless<\/p>\n
the nations we know that that blessing<\/p>\n
has come and been realized in the life<\/p>\n
the sacrificial death and the<\/p>\n
resurrection of jesus christ<\/p>\n
jesus is the one that came to save<\/p>\n
sinners like us<\/p>\n
he is the one that puts a new song in<\/p>\n
our hearts<\/p>\n
leading us in unending praise to god<\/p>\n
and what do we do<\/p>\n
with something we love<\/p>\n
we have to<\/p>\n
share it we want the joy that we have to<\/p>\n
be experienced by others oh yeah<\/p>\n
this is the same<\/p>\n
with our love for christ we want the joy<\/p>\n
that we have in jesus to be experienced<\/p>\n
by others<\/p>\n
just as the psalmist prayed that the<\/p>\n
nations would know the goodness of god<\/p>\n
and experience<\/p>\n
his saving power<\/p>\n
in the same way the prayer of the<\/p>\n
christian is that god would bless<\/p>\n
the nations<\/p>\n
let me keep telling you<\/p>\n
that god would continue to make himself<\/p>\n
known and that others would turn to him<\/p>\n
and that they would experience his<\/p>\n
what the christian<\/p>\n
gospel says is come to jesus<\/p>\n
and ask him this say lord god<\/p>\n
and i will sing it forever<\/p>\n
how about that<\/p>\n
let's pray and i will exactly<\/p>\n
god we thank you and praise you today<\/p>\n
for the ways you have blessed the<\/p>\n
nations we look around this room and we<\/p>\n
we hear and know these stories of how<\/p>\n
you have<\/p>\n
brought us to yourself you've changed<\/p>\n
lives you've worked in the nations and<\/p>\n
you continue to<\/p>\n
we're grateful for the forgiveness of<\/p>\n
sin that you bring when we repent of our<\/p>\n
sin<\/p>\n
when we turn to you in faith and say<\/p>\n
help us o god lead me oh god<\/p>\n
if you're faithful to do that<\/p>\n
help us to sing the song you've put into<\/p>\n
our hearts so god<\/p>\n
help us<\/p>\n
each day as we rise<\/p>\n
to know that your mercies are new and<\/p>\n
that you are faithful and present<\/p>\n
even those days we don't feel like<\/p>\n
singing we know that there's a deeper<\/p>\n
understanding there's a deeper<\/p>\n
uh set of lyrics that are embedded in<\/p>\n
you<\/p>\n
and we can be honest before you<\/p>\n
when we're weak<\/p>\n
you see we need you all the more<\/p>\n
lead us oh god today<\/p>\n
help us to sing<\/p>\n
the song you placed in our hearts<\/p>\n
and help us to be singing<\/p>\n
that others may hear<\/p>\n
and come to know<\/p>\n
the forgiveness<\/p>\n
and your saving power<\/p>\n
we ask and pray all of this in your holy<\/p>\n
