has come to translate the sermon we're<\/p>\n
so grateful for that thank you kiel for<\/p>\n
coming to do that<\/p>\n
i'm one of the elders here pongbin<\/p>\n
great<\/p>\n
yeah we just want to welcome you okay we<\/p>\n
look forward to getting to know you<\/p>\n
better if this is your first evening<\/p>\n
here welcome we've been going through a<\/p>\n
series on growing in the christian faith<\/p>\n
christian<\/p>\n
growing in the gospel the good news of<\/p>\n
jesus christ<\/p>\n
and one of the most beautiful things<\/p>\n
about the christian faith is that it's<\/p>\n
all about jesus<\/p>\n
it's all about what jesus has done in<\/p>\n
this world and in our lives<\/p>\n
christianity is a faith<\/p>\n
in which broken people sinful people<\/p>\n
realize their own weakness they realize<\/p>\n
their own helplessness<\/p>\n
and out of that weakness out of that<\/p>\n
inability to save ourselves we cry out<\/p>\n
to the god who can and will and does<\/p>\n
save<\/p>\n
on earth<\/p>\n
[Music]<\/p>\n
so the christian faith is entirely<\/p>\n
centered on<\/p>\n
it's not about<\/p>\n
the amount of our faith or the deeds<\/p>\n
that we do now<\/p>\n
no<\/p>\n
because if we're honest we know that at<\/p>\n
times our faith<\/p>\n
is weak<\/p>\n
or someone else<\/p>\n
to bring about lasting change in us<\/p>\n
are we looking to ourselves or someone<\/p>\n
else to help us in the deep recesses of<\/p>\n
our hearts<\/p>\n
or are we looking to the one that<\/p>\n
created our very souls<\/p>\n
it's important for us to understand our<\/p>\n
identity in jesus christ as we talk<\/p>\n
about growing in our faith<\/p>\n
the way that we look at growth or<\/p>\n
increase or positive change in our lives<\/p>\n
and the systems of the world has<\/p>\n
everything to do with us<\/p>\n
if we want to see something happen we<\/p>\n
have to do something<\/p>\n
it's centered around our desire to<\/p>\n
change our effort in doing so many<\/p>\n
i want to see an increase in my thai<\/p>\n
vocabulary so i ask crew male to teach<\/p>\n
me words i don't know<\/p>\n
i want to understand more about the<\/p>\n
world in which we live so i read books<\/p>\n
or i listen to people who are experts in<\/p>\n
a particular field to try to learn and<\/p>\n
acquire more knowledge<\/p>\n
durian<\/p>\n
but in all of these areas and efforts<\/p>\n
there's a great focus on myself<\/p>\n
and change and growth comes through a<\/p>\n
lot of work and dedication on my part<\/p>\n
so we need to be careful not to apply<\/p>\n
the same thinking to our growth in the<\/p>\n
christian life<\/p>\n
we need to remember that we are sinners<\/p>\n
saved by grace through faith<\/p>\n
faith in jesus christ<\/p>\n
if you are a follower of jesus that is<\/p>\n
who you are<\/p>\n
and every part of growing as a follower<\/p>\n
of jesus starts with our identity in<\/p>\n
christ and continues from that<\/p>\n
documentary<\/p>\n
jesus is the founder and he's the<\/p>\n
perfecter of our faith<\/p>\n
jesus is the one that saves us and grows<\/p>\n
us in<\/p>\n
so today we're going to look at the<\/p>\n
bible to see<\/p>\n
how and how we grow in prayer how we<\/p>\n
grow in and through prayer<\/p>\n
and<\/p>\n
many religions in the world have prayer<\/p>\n
as a part of their ritual and practice<\/p>\n
communicating with god through the words<\/p>\n
and the thoughts of our hearts<\/p>\n
we can be honest<\/p>\n
with god in our prayers because god is<\/p>\n
all-knowing<\/p>\n
we can use words that come from a place<\/p>\n
of honesty and openness<\/p>\n
before god because god<\/p>\n
made<\/p>\n
we're going to look at a few passages<\/p>\n
today just to see just how jesus<\/p>\n
leads us<\/p>\n
in prayer<\/p>\n
and how jesus teaches us to pray<\/p>\n
we thank you that we can gather here<\/p>\n
today to worship you<\/p>\n
as a gathered people as a gathered<\/p>\n
church<\/p>\n
and to hear from your word the bible<\/p>\n
uh<\/p>\n
we remember<\/p>\n
help us to see in your word today how<\/p>\n
you lead us and help us as we grow in<\/p>\n
you<\/p>\n
wrong<\/p>\n
we pray this in your holy name lord<\/p>\n
jesus amen<\/p>\n
there are a number of instances many<\/p>\n
instances in the gospels<\/p>\n
where we read of jesus praying to god<\/p>\n
the father look at me<\/p>\n
sometimes jesus would go away by himself<\/p>\n
to pray mankind<\/p>\n
other times he would pray before crowds<\/p>\n
other times calling others to prayers<\/p>\n
in luke chapter 22<\/p>\n
we read i will read that for us<\/p>\n
perhaps because i'm going backwards and<\/p>\n
not forward<\/p>\n
no it's not there<\/p>\n
okay if you have your bibles<\/p>\n
and you would like to open to<\/p>\n
luke chapter 22 luca about you song<\/p>\n
song<\/p>\n
so luke chapter 22<\/p>\n
verse 40 through 42<\/p>\n
and when he came to the place you said<\/p>\n
to them<\/p>\n
pray that you may not enter into<\/p>\n
temptation<\/p>\n
and he withdrew from them about a<\/p>\n
stone's throw<\/p>\n
and knelt down to pray and prayed<\/p>\n
saying father<\/p>\n
if you are willing remove this cup from<\/p>\n
me<\/p>\n
nevertheless not my will<\/p>\n
but yours be done<\/p>\n
look at yes<\/p>\n
so we see here jesus encouraging leading<\/p>\n
his his disciples to pray saying pray<\/p>\n
that you may not enter into temptation<\/p>\n
by<\/p>\n
and jesus himself turning to god the<\/p>\n
father in earnest prayer about his<\/p>\n
impending sacrificial death and praying<\/p>\n
not my will but yours<\/p>\n
be done london everyone goes<\/p>\n
so just a few instances of jesus<\/p>\n
leading us in prayer showing us to pray<\/p>\n
he prayed before us and for us<\/p>\n
the theologian and author writer<\/p>\n
professor and so on c.s lewis wrote this<\/p>\n
about prayer<\/p>\n
i pray because i can't help myself i<\/p>\n
pray because i'm helpless<\/p>\n
i pray because the need<\/p>\n
flows out of me all the time<\/p>\n
waking and sleeping<\/p>\n
prayer builds our love for god as we<\/p>\n
call out to him and trust in him<\/p>\n
just as a loving relationship is built<\/p>\n
on good communication and honest<\/p>\n
interaction<\/p>\n
how much more so with<\/p>\n
is a vital and wondrous gift<\/p>\n
of the christian faith<\/p>\n
but how<\/p>\n
do we pray how do we pray<\/p>\n
if our hearts are tempted towards sin<\/p>\n
and we're we're prone to be<\/p>\n
self-centered<\/p>\n
how do we learn to pray<\/p>\n
and when we pray how do we know that our<\/p>\n
prayers are god honoring and god focused<\/p>\n
focused on his will until<\/p>\n
but to grow in prayer and by prayer<\/p>\n
through prayer<\/p>\n
we pray<\/p>\n
in the gospel of luke jesus<\/p>\n
jesus's disciples actually ask him for<\/p>\n
help in this very thing<\/p>\n
they say lord teach us to pray<\/p>\n
instruct us help us<\/p>\n
in the gospel of matthew we actually<\/p>\n
have a longer account a longer version<\/p>\n
of what jesus taught them<\/p>\n
and when you pray you must not be like<\/p>\n
the hypocrites for they love to stand<\/p>\n
and pray in the synagogues and at the<\/p>\n
street corners that they may be seen by<\/p>\n
others<\/p>\n
truly i say to you<\/p>\n
that they have received their reward<\/p>\n
but when you pray go into your room and<\/p>\n
shut the door and pray to your father<\/p>\n
who is in secret<\/p>\n
and your father who sees in secret will<\/p>\n
reward you<\/p>\n
and when you pray do not heap up empty<\/p>\n
phrases as the gentiles do for they<\/p>\n
think that they will be heard for their<\/p>\n
many words<\/p>\n
do not be like them<\/p>\n
for your father knows what you need<\/p>\n
before you ask him<\/p>\n
pray then like this<\/p>\n
our father in heaven<\/p>\n
hallowed be<\/p>\n
your name your kingdom come<\/p>\n
your will be done on earth as it is in<\/p>\n
heaven<\/p>\n
give us this day our daily bread and<\/p>\n
forgive us our debts as we<\/p>\n
also have forgiven our debtors<\/p>\n
and lead us not into temptation but<\/p>\n
deliver us<\/p>\n
from evil<\/p>\n
for if you forgive others their<\/p>\n
trespasses your heavenly father will<\/p>\n
also forgive you but if you do not<\/p>\n
forgive others their trespasses neither<\/p>\n
will your father forgive<\/p>\n
your trespasses<\/p>\n
jesus is lovingly showing his disciples<\/p>\n
that prayer is about honoring god and<\/p>\n
not ourselves<\/p>\n
or can make prayer into an incantation<\/p>\n
in which we ask god for what we want and<\/p>\n
expect him to give it to us<\/p>\n
jesus says look the hypocrites who love<\/p>\n
to stand and pray in the synagogues have<\/p>\n
received their reward<\/p>\n
they're praying to be noticed and<\/p>\n
praised by men and they have been<\/p>\n
they've received their reward that's<\/p>\n
what they've received<\/p>\n
perhaps they were quite eloquent you<\/p>\n
know quite respected by others because<\/p>\n
of their beautiful prayers<\/p>\n
so maybe they were noticed and respected<\/p>\n
and and they had received that<\/p>\n
well called it up<\/p>\n
but jesus goes on to explain that it's<\/p>\n
it's what's in our hearts that matter to<\/p>\n
god<\/p>\n
jesus says don't use empty showy words<\/p>\n
just be real with god be real be honest<\/p>\n
and jesus says that<\/p>\n
god knows what we need before we even<\/p>\n
ask him<\/p>\n
god is aware of our needs and he will<\/p>\n
provide in his will and in his goodness<\/p>\n
and then in this passage like a patient<\/p>\n
wise teacher jesus<\/p>\n
shows his disciples how to pray<\/p>\n
organ<\/p>\n
and he prays he says pray like this and<\/p>\n
he teaches them love wrong songs<\/p>\n
and then jesus prays in this passage he<\/p>\n
prays what the church throughout history<\/p>\n
throughout the world uh knows as the<\/p>\n
lord's prayer love your souls<\/p>\n
the lord's prayer it moves our hearts<\/p>\n
from selfish distraction and reorients<\/p>\n
us<\/p>\n
towards god's<\/p>\n
will<\/p>\n
seeking that his kingdom the heavenly<\/p>\n
reality would be known and experienced<\/p>\n
on the earth<\/p>\n
the prayer rightly orders our affections<\/p>\n
towards god and leads us in ministering<\/p>\n
to others<\/p>\n
giving us hearts that forgive others<\/p>\n
knowing that we have been forgiven by<\/p>\n
asking god to sustain us asking god to<\/p>\n
keep us from sinning as we face<\/p>\n
temptation and face the evils of this<\/p>\n
world<\/p>\n
or perhaps we feel like we've done<\/p>\n
something that god couldn't possibly<\/p>\n
forgive<\/p>\n
so we we don't even bother<\/p>\n
to pray<\/p>\n
at those<\/p>\n
let times know and be reminded that<\/p>\n
jesus prays<\/p>\n
for us<\/p>\n
in the gospel of john<\/p>\n
we read how jesus prayed for those who<\/p>\n
believed in him and for those that would<\/p>\n
one day<\/p>\n
become<\/p>\n
believers<\/p>\n
john writes this my prayer jesus saying<\/p>\n
my prayer is not for them alone i pray<\/p>\n
also for those who will believe in me<\/p>\n
through their message<\/p>\n
that all of them may be one<\/p>\n
father just as you are in me<\/p>\n
and i am in you may they also be in us<\/p>\n
so that the world may believe that you<\/p>\n
have sent me<\/p>\n
i've given them the glory that you gave<\/p>\n
me that they may be one as we are one i<\/p>\n
and them and you and me so that they may<\/p>\n
be brought to complete unity then the<\/p>\n
world will know that you have sent me<\/p>\n
and have loved them even as you have<\/p>\n
loved me<\/p>\n
the capital<\/p>\n
so jesus prayed<\/p>\n
for those who believed in him and he<\/p>\n
prayed for those that would one day<\/p>\n
believe through the message of the<\/p>\n
gospel prayer so somebody thank you so<\/p>\n
jesus praying for those that would come<\/p>\n
to him in faith<\/p>\n
and he prayed that the church would know<\/p>\n
of god's love<\/p>\n
the apostle paul<\/p>\n
in the letter to the church in rome<\/p>\n
expounds on this truth<\/p>\n
likewise the spirit helps us in our<\/p>\n
weakness<\/p>\n
for we do not know what to pray<\/p>\n
for as we ought but the spirit himself<\/p>\n
intercedes for us with groanings too<\/p>\n
deep for words<\/p>\n
and he who searches hearts knows<\/p>\n
what is the mind of the spirit<\/p>\n
because the spirit intercedes for the<\/p>\n
saints<\/p>\n
according to the will of god<\/p>\n
in song<\/p>\n
do you see the wondrous reality<\/p>\n
of the holy trinity's work<\/p>\n
in our lives through prayer<\/p>\n
on<\/p>\n
jesus knowing of our weakness our lack<\/p>\n
of understanding and lovingly teaching<\/p>\n
us how to pray prayers<\/p>\n
the holy spirit interceding for the<\/p>\n
praying on our behalf as we are weak and<\/p>\n
our desires are askew<\/p>\n
how do we take this today and apply this<\/p>\n
to our hearts<\/p>\n
how do we walk forward with hearts that<\/p>\n
desire to grow<\/p>\n
in our faith through prayer<\/p>\n
we fully lean into god and trust him to<\/p>\n
continue to do<\/p>\n
the good work he has begun in us<\/p>\n
we ask jesus the author and perfecter of<\/p>\n
our faith to teach us each day<\/p>\n
how we are to pray<\/p>\n
and we rely on the holy spirit to<\/p>\n
intercede for us<\/p>\n
as we walk forward<\/p>\n
we're going to take just a few moments a<\/p>\n
few minutes to<\/p>\n
to pray a prayer before god<\/p>\n
this was written by my friend david<\/p>\n
taylor and i asked him i have a sermon<\/p>\n

and i want us to take a few moments to<\/p>\n
just sit where you are<\/p>\n
and sit before god in your heart<\/p>\n
and pray this prayer if you if you feel<\/p>\n
led to pray this i want you to spend<\/p>\n
some time praying this before god and<\/p>\n
then i will close us<\/p>\n
up let's pray now<\/p>\n
oh lord<\/p>\n
you who are neither ashamed nor<\/p>\n
surprised<\/p>\n
by our neediness<\/p>\n
we offer to you this day our needy<\/p>\n
bodies hearts and minds<\/p>\n
and we ask that you would speak your<\/p>\n
healing word to<\/p>\n
our bodies<\/p>\n
your comforting word to our hearts<\/p>\n
and your word of peace<\/p>\n
to our minds<\/p>\n
so that we might experience your<\/p>\n
provision of grace<\/p>\n
in our hour of need<\/p>\n
we pray this in the name of the one who<\/p>\n
sees us<\/p>\n
