it's good to see everyone today

over the past few weeks we've been going

through a series on christian growth

and what it means to grow in our faith

so so far we've looked at growing

through the word and sacrament

growing through

prayer

and two weeks ago

john trey

preached on growing through the

spiritual disciplines

so today is the final sermon in this

series we're looking at growing through

fellowship when it is

what does the bible have to teach us

about what it means to live in

fellowship with each other

and so in order to more deeply explore

this we're going to look at ephesians 4

1-16

[Music]

this is the word of god

thank you

so ephesians is a letter about the

church about the body of christ

ephesians gives us the big picture

um and shows us how jesus's work on the

cross impacts different aspects of our

life if he says

so just an overview of ephesians paul

the author shows us god's vision for the

new humanity that comes from following

jesus

that god's people would be unified

through the spirit and their belief in

jesus christ overcoming barriers of

ethnicity socioeconomic status

and cultural identities

and

and so in this section that we just read

the flow of paul's argument

is that

we have the life of the trinity inside

of us

yet we live in spiritual immaturity

and the way to grow up into maturity is

doing the hard work of maintaining unity

in the church

in the church that we teach

it's a straightforward argument and it's

broken down into three sections

so in the first section paul brings us

back to the foundations of the christian

life

that's why he begins in verse 1 by

saying i urge you to live a life worthy

of the calling you've received

well what he isn't referring to here is

what

what we might think of when we think of

calling

the way we tend to think of calling is

in the context of the question what does

god want me to do in my life

and that's that's true and that's valid

but that's not what paul is addressing

paul isn't referring to a specific

calling or vocation in the way that we

tend to think

i think

that this person is called to be a

teacher or to run a business or be a

missionary

when he says calling here he's referring

to the more basic calling of the gospel

itself

summoning people to believe in jesus as

the risen lord and king and to give him

complete and undivided allegiance for

the rest of their lives

now one thing to notice about this

calling is that it's something we've

received

what does it mean to be a christian

christian

paul tells us in chapter one where he

says god has called us to know the

riches of his glorious inheritance in

his holy people

paul tells us even more in this chapter

down in verse 15

where he says

when we become christians we become part

of the body of which christ is the head

and if we look at verses four to six

we'll see what exactly paul means by

this

i

he says we share in the same life we

share the same spirit the same lord the

same faith same baptism

the same god and father of allah

and because the father son and holy

spirit are in us through the spirit it

means we have the very life of the

trinity in us

so what makes us christians is not that

we are nice people or we come to church

or we believe the bible

sings

christians

what makes you a christian what makes us

christians is that we have the very life

of god in us

and what this means is christianity is

not about just being nice or being

likeable

don't reduce christianity to being nice

and spending time with people

you have the very life of the trinity in

you it's powerful it's radical god

creates a new person

there's a new power that comes into your

life when you become a christian it's a

radical thing

it's huge

so paul says that we

have the life of the trinity in us yet

we start off as spiritually immature

so when you become a christian when we

become christians we're made new like

jesus says to nicodemus you must be born

again

yeah

it's not just the change in lifestyle

it's an entirely new life let me shake

her and play with her she with the woman

she with mine

and so when babies are born do they come

out of the womb fully grown adult men

and women

no they come out crying

covered in fluids and blood

unsure of the world around them

this is the image that paul gives us

here when we become christians we have

the life of the trinity in us yet we're

born spiritually immature we're

spiritual babies

here's paul one of the greatest and

well-known christians of all time paul

the apostle calling himself an infant

if some of the greatest christians see

themselves as immature then some of us

are really immature

if paul sees himself as a toddler then

all of us are about 5 hours old

we're spiritual babies

and what do spiritual babies do that's

hero 5

well paul alludes to a few things that

characterize spiritual babies

so we see one in verse 14. infants are

blown here and there by every wind of

teaching and by the cunning and

craftiness of people in their deceitful

scheming

sat by satmar

he's saying spiritual babies are

vulnerable to all sorts of teaching

that they can discern

parents i'm sure that you've had to say

things like don't put that coin in your

mouth

or don't put your fingers in the

electrical socket

why because babies aren't able to

discern between what's good for you and

what's going to kill you

and likewise paul tells us that

spiritual babies can't tell good

teaching from bad preaching from

poisonous teaching

unless we know what the bible teaches

unless we are theologically astute

unless we're able to discern between

what the bible says versus what people

say

we'll remain spiritual babies not

knowing the difference between what's

good for us and what will kill us

so another characteristic of spiritual

infants is self-centeredness

soon what are a toddler's two favorite

words

everyone knows babies are incredibly

self-centered

they want what they want and they want

it now

and then as kids get older you have to

teach them to share your food

this is perhaps why paul says in verse 2

be completely humble and gentle bearing

with one another in love

because spiritual babies like real

babies are always thinking about

themselves

and how

always getting our feelings hurt or our

self-conscious

spiritual babies are always absorbed

with themselves never thinking about

other people

we're overly concerned with our image

unable to accept criticism or forgive or

love our neighbors

so those are two one final mark of a

spiritual infant paul tells us this in

verse 14 as well he says toss back and

forth by the waves

in other words they're inconsistent

you go back and forth

so just like how babies have very short

attention spans and need to be

entertained by lights and sounds and

sparks

for only about 10 seconds

spiritual babies are the same way

well if we come to church services and

we're convicted and we have a spiritual

experience yet we don't follow through

the next day

that's the mark of a spiritual infant

or if we're not able to do just our

basic duty to god even when we don't

feel like it and we need constant

answered prayer after answered prayer in

order to continue following jesus that's

the mark of a spiritual infant

if we aren't able to come to god whether

or not our lives are going well whether

we're successful or struggling

we only come to god in times of struggle

but forget god in times of success we're

so there's a place in luke 10 where

jesus sends out his disciples they come

back rejoicing and they tell jesus lord

even the demons submit to us in your

name

indeed

and so jesus says don't rejoice that the

demons submit to you rejoice that your

names are written in heaven

that's your pardon that your name is

written in heaven that's something that

can never change it's there it's

constant

and so jesus tells his disciples this is

what you should rejoice over

here

rejoice over what god has already done

for you whether he does anything else or

not rejoice over what he's already done

a spiritual baby looks to god and says

what have you done for me lately what

have you done lately don't don't do that

rejoice that your names are written in

heaven

so in other words someone who is

spiritually

mature knows their way around the bible

they're theologically astute they can

tell the difference between good and

poisonous teachings

foreign

they aren't self-centered they're

selfless able to handle criticism able

to forgive

me

they know how to handle suffering

they're steady consistent

they're able to discern the truth and

speak the truth in love

don't you want that

i want that

man and we see even paul says he's not

where he ought to be

paul encourages all of us to grow up to

grow into maturity attaining to the

whole measure of the fullness of christ

if the trajectory of the christian life

is that we grow from spiritual babies to

becoming spiritually mature

attaining to the full measure of christ

essentially that there is no growing in

spiritual maturity just by us working on

ourselves as an individual

he says it's through the deep

involvement in a church community and

through the increasing of the unity and

fellowship in the church community that

we can grow

in christ

god's given us the church the body of

christ as the means through which we

grow verses 11 to 13.

christ

and so the reason we need to be part of

the church is because otherwise we stay

infants

and there's two things in particular

that paul tells us about the church and

about spiritual maturity

so one he shows us in verses 11 to 13

that

every christian has a role to play

within the community

we may tend to think that

only the pastors the elders the deacons

have roles to play in the church and we

might think that

is reserved for people in ministry

people in the church

would

that no one is a spectator in the church

everyone participates in the life of the

church

well in verse 11

he says jesus has given the church

apostles prophets evangelists pastors

and teachers

but the main point of these roles is

verse 12

to equip his people for works of service

so that the body of christ may be built

upon

the purpose of all the ministry that's

going on the purpose of god calling

people to become teachers pastors

evangelists etc is so that every

christian can serve in the way that

they're called to do

and there are specific ways that this

happens tim keller he has a saying

there's my

annual in my weekly tim keller quotation

he

tim keller says

there are some needs that only you can

see

there are some hands that only you can

hold

there are some people only you can reach

everyone has a part to play and so to go

back to the question of calling earlier

one thing we can be sure of is that god

has called every christian to be part of

a local church

the church does not exist to stagnate

one of the purposes of the church is so

that every christian whether you're a

business person a doctor a stay-at-home

parent a student

that you can be equipped for works of

service for ministry

christa my name is

so that's one radical thing the other is

the radical thing that paul tells us is

in verse 13

where he defines maturity

how does he define it he says unity in

the faith and in the knowledge of the

son of god and become mature

baloney

how does one become mature by growing in

unity

as we become more and more one in the

faith and in the knowledge of the son of

god the more at one we become the more

unified the closer and deeper

relationships get the more we grow in

our maturity

from some points

and then verses 15 to 16 bring it home

the whole body grows and builds itself

up in love as each part does its work

remember because we have the life of the

trinity in us the triune god

it makes sense that our lives be

reflective of the pattern within the

trinity

countries

within the trinity the father son holy

spirit there's perfect oneness perfect

unity perfect harmony perfect compassion

they're all serving each other

and so if we want to be like god to grow

in maturity

it only happens when the life of the

trinity is reflected in the life of the

community

and what this means is we can't just

drop in on church and expect to grow

if we have the life of the trinity in us

if we are god's people how dare we avoid

certain people in the community just

because they rub us the wrong way

hello

you know a couple of weeks ago at our

retreat in our discussion group

we went around sharing times where we've

experienced the most growth

one thing that all of us had in common

was that we experienced some of the most

growth in the context of relationships

all of us could point to certain

individuals and relationships and say

god really worked in my life through

this person

and this friendship

so we're to be a community that reflects

the life of the trinity and this is how

we grow

but the the key to this to growing in

spiritual maturity is found in verse 15

if you remember anything from the sermon

remember this practice speaking the

truth in love

who comes

because you or me or none of us will

grow unless we're in a community where

people are speaking the truth in love

with perfect balance

because we need other people from the

outside to help us know ourselves

it feel oh is that really my voice

i hear myself we hear ourselves from the

bones of our neck but other people hear

us how we actually sound

and likewise we need other people to

help us know ourselves and to see our

own blind spots

if we live in a community where people

love us but refuse to tell us the truth

about ourselves

we won't know ourselves we won't grow up

but if we do get truth without love it

actually pushes us further from the

truth

we tell people the truth but we're not

loving that person is going to harden

their heart and they won't listen at all

they'll actually be driven further away

from the truth

we aren't capable of keeping this

balance together all the time

how does that work

so some of us lean towards grace and

love this my own temperament

we tend to excuse peop telling people

the truth in favor of love

so temperamentally some of us

lean towards love and grace

others of us lean towards the truth

we're very direct we'll give the cold

hard truth but we do it at the expense

of love

and the reason we lean either towards

truth or towards love

is really because of our own selfishness

well what's the reason that we can't

tell people the truth

because we're worried that they'll be

mad at us or will feel crushed and

guilty

so we don't tell the truth because of

our own self-centeredness and pride

what about those of us that tell the

truth but aren't very loving

well we tell the truth but we want to

cut people down

we don't do it to build up and restore

we tell the truth to show them who is

right because we like winning arguments

when we tell the truth without love it's

also out of a concern for ourselves

the reason we can't tell the truth in

love is because we're looking to

ourselves in our own interests

what do we do

well

in philippians 4

2 1-14 paul tells us what the gospel is

he says jesus christ who is god made

himself nothing here's god in jesus

christ taking on the very nature of a

servant becoming humble and obedient to

the point of death even death on the

cross

jesus looking not to himself but to us

seeing our helplessness seeing our sin

and how trapped we were

seeing the infinite debt that needed to

be paid

gave his own life and defeated sin and

death so that we could be freed

you know the gospel is the ultimate

combination of truth and love

when jesus went to the cross he

essentially said

you me all of us are so lost

so hopeless that i needed to die for you

don't

sing that's the truth and it's insulting

it's offensive

let's feel that offence

but when you also when he went to the

cross he also essentially said i love

you so much you have so much value so

much worth that i am willing to die for

you

young

see until we know that we're that lost

we won't accept that we are that loved

and until we know that we are that loved

we won't accept that we are that lost

it's truth and love

what happened

and when we grasp this when we take it

in when we realize that jesus did this

for us

then we'll be able to speak the truth in

love

not looking to our own interests but to

the interests of those around us so that

we may grow up attaining to the whole

measure of the fullness of christ

don't be surprised by spiritual

immaturity

if paul says he's a spiritual infant

what are we what does that make us

don't be surprised when others act in a

way that isn't mature we're not saved by

spiritual maturity we're saved by grace

someone once said the christian life is

like riding a bicycle you either go

forwards or you fall down

don't ever think oh i'm just this way

i'll never get over this attitude this

habit the sin don't ever think that you

have the very life of god in you is

anything too powerful for that

nation

united

let's look to jesus and as we have the

life of the trinity would we like paul

says share in the same mindset of jesus

would we become a community of people

who can speak the truth and love so that

we may grow into the fullness of christ

let's

pray lord jesus we thank you for your

word today lord we thank you that

you are here with us lord we thank you

that you've given us just the privilege

and the blessing of

uh having the life of the trinity in us

lord would you

remind us of

your power lord would you remind us of

the truth that you've spoken over us

in love

and lord would this

change the very structures of our heart

jesus name
