yeah it's good to see everyone today<\/p>\n
over the past few weeks we've been going<\/p>\n
through a series on christian growth<\/p>\n
and what it means to grow in our faith<\/p>\n
so so far we've looked at growing<\/p>\n
through the word and sacrament<\/p>\n
growing through<\/p>\n
prayer<\/p>\n
and two weeks ago<\/p>\n
john trey<\/p>\n
preached on growing through the<\/p>\n
spiritual disciplines<\/p>\n
so today is the final sermon in this<\/p>\n
series we're looking at growing through<\/p>\n
fellowship when it is<\/p>\n
what does the bible have to teach us<\/p>\n
about what it means to live in<\/p>\n
fellowship with each other<\/p>\n
and so in order to more deeply explore<\/p>\n
this we're going to look at ephesians 4<\/p>\n
1-16<\/p>\n

this is the word of god<\/p>\n
thank you<\/p>\n
so ephesians is a letter about the<\/p>\n
church about the body of christ<\/p>\n
ephesians gives us the big picture<\/p>\n
um and shows us how jesus's work on the<\/p>\n
cross impacts different aspects of our<\/p>\n
life if he says<\/p>\n
so just an overview of ephesians paul<\/p>\n
the author shows us god's vision for the<\/p>\n
new humanity that comes from following<\/p>\n
jesus<\/p>\n
that god's people would be unified<\/p>\n
through the spirit and their belief in<\/p>\n
jesus christ overcoming barriers of<\/p>\n
ethnicity socioeconomic status<\/p>\n
and cultural identities<\/p>\n
and<\/p>\n
and so in this section that we just read<\/p>\n
the flow of paul's argument<\/p>\n
is that<\/p>\n
we have the life of the trinity inside<\/p>\n
of us<\/p>\n
yet we live in spiritual immaturity<\/p>\n
and the way to grow up into maturity is<\/p>\n
doing the hard work of maintaining unity<\/p>\n
in the church<\/p>\n
in the church that we teach<\/p>\n
it's a straightforward argument and it's<\/p>\n
broken down into three sections<\/p>\n
so in the first section paul brings us<\/p>\n
back to the foundations of the christian<\/p>\n
life<\/p>\n
that's why he begins in verse 1 by<\/p>\n
saying i urge you to live a life worthy<\/p>\n
of the calling you've received<\/p>\n
well what he isn't referring to here is<\/p>\n
what<\/p>\n
what we might think of when we think of<\/p>\n
calling<\/p>\n
the way we tend to think of calling is<\/p>\n
in the context of the question what does<\/p>\n
god want me to do in my life<\/p>\n
and that's that's true and that's valid<\/p>\n
but that's not what paul is addressing<\/p>\n
paul isn't referring to a specific<\/p>\n
calling or vocation in the way that we<\/p>\n
tend to think<\/p>\n
i think<\/p>\n
that this person is called to be a<\/p>\n
teacher or to run a business or be a<\/p>\n
missionary<\/p>\n
when he says calling here he's referring<\/p>\n
to the more basic calling of the gospel<\/p>\n
itself<\/p>\n
summoning people to believe in jesus as<\/p>\n
the risen lord and king and to give him<\/p>\n
complete and undivided allegiance for<\/p>\n
the rest of their lives<\/p>\n
now one thing to notice about this<\/p>\n
calling is that it's something we've<\/p>\n
received<\/p>\n
what does it mean to be a christian<\/p>\n
christian<\/p>\n
paul tells us in chapter one where he<\/p>\n
says god has called us to know the<\/p>\n
riches of his glorious inheritance in<\/p>\n
his holy people<\/p>\n
paul tells us even more in this chapter<\/p>\n
down in verse 15<\/p>\n
where he says<\/p>\n
when we become christians we become part<\/p>\n
of the body of which christ is the head<\/p>\n
and if we look at verses four to six<\/p>\n
we'll see what exactly paul means by<\/p>\n
this<\/p>\n
i<\/p>\n
he says we share in the same life we<\/p>\n
share the same spirit the same lord the<\/p>\n
same faith same baptism<\/p>\n
the same god and father of allah<\/p>\n
and because the father son and holy<\/p>\n
spirit are in us through the spirit it<\/p>\n
means we have the very life of the<\/p>\n
trinity in us<\/p>\n
so what makes us christians is not that<\/p>\n
we are nice people or we come to church<\/p>\n
or we believe the bible<\/p>\n
sings<\/p>\n
christians<\/p>\n
what makes you a christian what makes us<\/p>\n
christians is that we have the very life<\/p>\n
of god in us<\/p>\n
and what this means is christianity is<\/p>\n
not about just being nice or being<\/p>\n
likeable<\/p>\n
don't reduce christianity to being nice<\/p>\n
and spending time with people<\/p>\n
you have the very life of the trinity in<\/p>\n
you it's powerful it's radical god<\/p>\n
creates a new person<\/p>\n
there's a new power that comes into your<\/p>\n
life when you become a christian it's a<\/p>\n
radical thing<\/p>\n
it's huge<\/p>\n
so paul says that we<\/p>\n
have the life of the trinity in us yet<\/p>\n
we start off as spiritually immature<\/p>\n
so when you become a christian when we<\/p>\n
become christians we're made new like<\/p>\n
jesus says to nicodemus you must be born<\/p>\n
again<\/p>\n
yeah<\/p>\n
it's not just the change in lifestyle<\/p>\n
it's an entirely new life let me shake<\/p>\n
her and play with her she with the woman<\/p>\n
she with mine<\/p>\n
and so when babies are born do they come<\/p>\n
out of the womb fully grown adult men<\/p>\n
and women<\/p>\n
no they come out crying<\/p>\n
covered in fluids and blood<\/p>\n
unsure of the world around them<\/p>\n
this is the image that paul gives us<\/p>\n
here when we become christians we have<\/p>\n
the life of the trinity in us yet we're<\/p>\n
born spiritually immature we're<\/p>\n
spiritual babies<\/p>\n
here's paul one of the greatest and<\/p>\n
well-known christians of all time paul<\/p>\n
the apostle calling himself an infant<\/p>\n
if some of the greatest christians see<\/p>\n
themselves as immature then some of us<\/p>\n
are really immature<\/p>\n
if paul sees himself as a toddler then<\/p>\n
all of us are about 5 hours old<\/p>\n
we're spiritual babies<\/p>\n
and what do spiritual babies do that's<\/p>\n
hero 5<\/p>\n
well paul alludes to a few things that<\/p>\n
characterize spiritual babies<\/p>\n
so we see one in verse 14. infants are<\/p>\n
blown here and there by every wind of<\/p>\n
teaching and by the cunning and<\/p>\n
craftiness of people in their deceitful<\/p>\n
scheming<\/p>\n
sat by satmar<\/p>\n
he's saying spiritual babies are<\/p>\n
vulnerable to all sorts of teaching<\/p>\n
that they can discern<\/p>\n
parents i'm sure that you've had to say<\/p>\n
things like don't put that coin in your<\/p>\n
mouth<\/p>\n
or don't put your fingers in the<\/p>\n
electrical socket<\/p>\n
why because babies aren't able to<\/p>\n
discern between what's good for you and<\/p>\n
what's going to kill you<\/p>\n
and likewise paul tells us that<\/p>\n
spiritual babies can't tell good<\/p>\n
teaching from bad preaching from<\/p>\n
poisonous teaching<\/p>\n
unless we know what the bible teaches<\/p>\n
unless we are theologically astute<\/p>\n
unless we're able to discern between<\/p>\n
what the bible says versus what people<\/p>\n
say<\/p>\n
we'll remain spiritual babies not<\/p>\n
knowing the difference between what's<\/p>\n
good for us and what will kill us<\/p>\n
so another characteristic of spiritual<\/p>\n
infants is self-centeredness<\/p>\n
soon what are a toddler's two favorite<\/p>\n
words<\/p>\n
everyone knows babies are incredibly<\/p>\n
self-centered<\/p>\n
they want what they want and they want<\/p>\n
it now<\/p>\n
and then as kids get older you have to<\/p>\n
teach them to share your food<\/p>\n
this is perhaps why paul says in verse 2<\/p>\n
be completely humble and gentle bearing<\/p>\n
with one another in love<\/p>\n
because spiritual babies like real<\/p>\n
babies are always thinking about<\/p>\n
themselves<\/p>\n
and how<\/p>\n
always getting our feelings hurt or our<\/p>\n
self-conscious<\/p>\n
spiritual babies are always absorbed<\/p>\n
with themselves never thinking about<\/p>\n
other people<\/p>\n
we're overly concerned with our image<\/p>\n
unable to accept criticism or forgive or<\/p>\n
love our neighbors<\/p>\n
so those are two one final mark of a<\/p>\n
spiritual infant paul tells us this in<\/p>\n
verse 14 as well he says toss back and<\/p>\n
forth by the waves<\/p>\n
in other words they're inconsistent<\/p>\n
you go back and forth<\/p>\n
so just like how babies have very short<\/p>\n
attention spans and need to be<\/p>\n
entertained by lights and sounds and<\/p>\n
sparks<\/p>\n
for only about 10 seconds<\/p>\n
spiritual babies are the same way<\/p>\n
well if we come to church services and<\/p>\n
we're convicted and we have a spiritual<\/p>\n
experience yet we don't follow through<\/p>\n
the next day<\/p>\n
that's the mark of a spiritual infant<\/p>\n
or if we're not able to do just our<\/p>\n
basic duty to god even when we don't<\/p>\n
feel like it and we need constant<\/p>\n
answered prayer after answered prayer in<\/p>\n
order to continue following jesus that's<\/p>\n
the mark of a spiritual infant<\/p>\n
if we aren't able to come to god whether<\/p>\n
or not our lives are going well whether<\/p>\n
we're successful or struggling<\/p>\n
we only come to god in times of struggle<\/p>\n
but forget god in times of success we're<\/p>\n
so there's a place in luke 10 where<\/p>\n
jesus sends out his disciples they come<\/p>\n
back rejoicing and they tell jesus lord<\/p>\n
even the demons submit to us in your<\/p>\n
name<\/p>\n
indeed<\/p>\n
and so jesus says don't rejoice that the<\/p>\n
demons submit to you rejoice that your<\/p>\n
names are written in heaven<\/p>\n
that's your pardon that your name is<\/p>\n
written in heaven that's something that<\/p>\n
can never change it's there it's<\/p>\n
constant<\/p>\n
and so jesus tells his disciples this is<\/p>\n
what you should rejoice over<\/p>\n
here<\/p>\n
rejoice over what god has already done<\/p>\n
for you whether he does anything else or<\/p>\n
not rejoice over what he's already done<\/p>\n
a spiritual baby looks to god and says<\/p>\n
what have you done for me lately what<\/p>\n
have you done lately don't don't do that<\/p>\n
rejoice that your names are written in<\/p>\n
heaven<\/p>\n
so in other words someone who is<\/p>\n
spiritually<\/p>\n
mature knows their way around the bible<\/p>\n
they're theologically astute they can<\/p>\n
tell the difference between good and<\/p>\n
poisonous teachings<\/p>\n
foreign<\/p>\n
they aren't self-centered they're<\/p>\n
selfless able to handle criticism able<\/p>\n
to forgive<\/p>\n
me<\/p>\n
they know how to handle suffering<\/p>\n
they're steady consistent<\/p>\n
they're able to discern the truth and<\/p>\n
speak the truth in love<\/p>\n
don't you want that<\/p>\n
i want that<\/p>\n
man and we see even paul says he's not<\/p>\n
where he ought to be<\/p>\n
paul encourages all of us to grow up to<\/p>\n
grow into maturity attaining to the<\/p>\n
whole measure of the fullness of christ<\/p>\n
if the trajectory of the christian life<\/p>\n
is that we grow from spiritual babies to<\/p>\n
becoming spiritually mature<\/p>\n
attaining to the full measure of christ<\/p>\n
essentially that there is no growing in<\/p>\n
spiritual maturity just by us working on<\/p>\n
ourselves as an individual<\/p>\n
he says it's through the deep<\/p>\n
involvement in a church community and<\/p>\n
through the increasing of the unity and<\/p>\n
fellowship in the church community that<\/p>\n
we can grow<\/p>\n
in christ<\/p>\n
god's given us the church the body of<\/p>\n
christ as the means through which we<\/p>\n
grow verses 11 to 13.<\/p>\n
christ<\/p>\n
and so the reason we need to be part of<\/p>\n
the church is because otherwise we stay<\/p>\n
infants<\/p>\n
and there's two things in particular<\/p>\n
that paul tells us about the church and<\/p>\n
about spiritual maturity<\/p>\n
so one he shows us in verses 11 to 13<\/p>\n
that<\/p>\n
every christian has a role to play<\/p>\n
within the community<\/p>\n
we may tend to think that<\/p>\n
only the pastors the elders the deacons<\/p>\n
have roles to play in the church and we<\/p>\n
might think that<\/p>\n
is reserved for people in ministry<\/p>\n
people in the church<\/p>\n
would<\/p>\n
that no one is a spectator in the church<\/p>\n
everyone participates in the life of the<\/p>\n
church<\/p>\n
well in verse 11<\/p>\n
he says jesus has given the church<\/p>\n
apostles prophets evangelists pastors<\/p>\n
and teachers<\/p>\n
but the main point of these roles is<\/p>\n
verse 12<\/p>\n
to equip his people for works of service<\/p>\n
so that the body of christ may be built<\/p>\n
upon<\/p>\n
the purpose of all the ministry that's<\/p>\n
going on the purpose of god calling<\/p>\n
people to become teachers pastors<\/p>\n
evangelists etc is so that every<\/p>\n
christian can serve in the way that<\/p>\n
they're called to do<\/p>\n
and there are specific ways that this<\/p>\n
happens tim keller he has a saying<\/p>\n
there's my<\/p>\n
annual in my weekly tim keller quotation<\/p>\n
he<\/p>\n
tim keller says<\/p>\n
there are some needs that only you can<\/p>\n
see<\/p>\n
there are some hands that only you can<\/p>\n
hold<\/p>\n
there are some people only you can reach<\/p>\n
everyone has a part to play and so to go<\/p>\n
back to the question of calling earlier<\/p>\n
one thing we can be sure of is that god<\/p>\n
has called every christian to be part of<\/p>\n
a local church<\/p>\n
the church does not exist to stagnate<\/p>\n
one of the purposes of the church is so<\/p>\n
that every christian whether you're a<\/p>\n
business person a doctor a stay-at-home<\/p>\n
parent a student<\/p>\n
that you can be equipped for works of<\/p>\n
service for ministry<\/p>\n
christa my name is<\/p>\n
so that's one radical thing the other is<\/p>\n
the radical thing that paul tells us is<\/p>\n
in verse 13<\/p>\n
where he defines maturity<\/p>\n
how does he define it he says unity in<\/p>\n
the faith and in the knowledge of the<\/p>\n
son of god and become mature<\/p>\n
baloney<\/p>\n
how does one become mature by growing in<\/p>\n
unity<\/p>\n
as we become more and more one in the<\/p>\n
faith and in the knowledge of the son of<\/p>\n
god the more at one we become the more<\/p>\n
unified the closer and deeper<\/p>\n
relationships get the more we grow in<\/p>\n
our maturity<\/p>\n
from some points<\/p>\n
and then verses 15 to 16 bring it home<\/p>\n
the whole body grows and builds itself<\/p>\n
up in love as each part does its work<\/p>\n
remember because we have the life of the<\/p>\n
trinity in us the triune god<\/p>\n
it makes sense that our lives be<\/p>\n
reflective of the pattern within the<\/p>\n
trinity<\/p>\n
countries<\/p>\n
within the trinity the father son holy<\/p>\n
spirit there's perfect oneness perfect<\/p>\n
unity perfect harmony perfect compassion<\/p>\n
they're all serving each other<\/p>\n
and so if we want to be like god to grow<\/p>\n
in maturity<\/p>\n
it only happens when the life of the<\/p>\n
trinity is reflected in the life of the<\/p>\n
community<\/p>\n
and what this means is we can't just<\/p>\n
drop in on church and expect to grow<\/p>\n
if we have the life of the trinity in us<\/p>\n
if we are god's people how dare we avoid<\/p>\n
certain people in the community just<\/p>\n
because they rub us the wrong way<\/p>\n
hello<\/p>\n
you know a couple of weeks ago at our<\/p>\n
retreat in our discussion group<\/p>\n
we went around sharing times where we've<\/p>\n
experienced the most growth<\/p>\n
one thing that all of us had in common<\/p>\n
was that we experienced some of the most<\/p>\n
growth in the context of relationships<\/p>\n
all of us could point to certain<\/p>\n
individuals and relationships and say<\/p>\n
god really worked in my life through<\/p>\n
this person<\/p>\n
and this friendship<\/p>\n
so we're to be a community that reflects<\/p>\n
the life of the trinity and this is how<\/p>\n
we grow<\/p>\n
but the the key to this to growing in<\/p>\n
spiritual maturity is found in verse 15<\/p>\n
if you remember anything from the sermon<\/p>\n
remember this practice speaking the<\/p>\n
truth in love<\/p>\n
who comes<\/p>\n
because you or me or none of us will<\/p>\n
grow unless we're in a community where<\/p>\n
people are speaking the truth in love<\/p>\n
with perfect balance<\/p>\n
because we need other people from the<\/p>\n
outside to help us know ourselves<\/p>\n
it feel oh is that really my voice<\/p>\n
i hear myself we hear ourselves from the<\/p>\n
bones of our neck but other people hear<\/p>\n
us how we actually sound<\/p>\n
and likewise we need other people to<\/p>\n
help us know ourselves and to see our<\/p>\n
own blind spots<\/p>\n
if we live in a community where people<\/p>\n
love us but refuse to tell us the truth<\/p>\n
about ourselves<\/p>\n
we won't know ourselves we won't grow up<\/p>\n
but if we do get truth without love it<\/p>\n
actually pushes us further from the<\/p>\n
truth<\/p>\n
we tell people the truth but we're not<\/p>\n
loving that person is going to harden<\/p>\n
their heart and they won't listen at all<\/p>\n
they'll actually be driven further away<\/p>\n
from the truth<\/p>\n
we aren't capable of keeping this<\/p>\n
balance together all the time<\/p>\n
how does that work<\/p>\n
so some of us lean towards grace and<\/p>\n
love this my own temperament<\/p>\n
we tend to excuse peop telling people<\/p>\n
the truth in favor of love<\/p>\n
so temperamentally some of us<\/p>\n
lean towards love and grace<\/p>\n
others of us lean towards the truth<\/p>\n
we're very direct we'll give the cold<\/p>\n
hard truth but we do it at the expense<\/p>\n
of love<\/p>\n
and the reason we lean either towards<\/p>\n
truth or towards love<\/p>\n
is really because of our own selfishness<\/p>\n
well what's the reason that we can't<\/p>\n
tell people the truth<\/p>\n
because we're worried that they'll be<\/p>\n
mad at us or will feel crushed and<\/p>\n
guilty<\/p>\n
so we don't tell the truth because of<\/p>\n
our own self-centeredness and pride<\/p>\n
what about those of us that tell the<\/p>\n
truth but aren't very loving<\/p>\n
well we tell the truth but we want to<\/p>\n
cut people down<\/p>\n
we don't do it to build up and restore<\/p>\n
we tell the truth to show them who is<\/p>\n
right because we like winning arguments<\/p>\n
when we tell the truth without love it's<\/p>\n
also out of a concern for ourselves<\/p>\n
the reason we can't tell the truth in<\/p>\n
love is because we're looking to<\/p>\n
ourselves in our own interests<\/p>\n
what do we do<\/p>\n
well<\/p>\n
in philippians 4<\/p>\n
2 1-14 paul tells us what the gospel is<\/p>\n
he says jesus christ who is god made<\/p>\n
himself nothing here's god in jesus<\/p>\n
christ taking on the very nature of a<\/p>\n
servant becoming humble and obedient to<\/p>\n
the point of death even death on the<\/p>\n
cross<\/p>\n
jesus looking not to himself but to us<\/p>\n
seeing our helplessness seeing our sin<\/p>\n
and how trapped we were<\/p>\n
seeing the infinite debt that needed to<\/p>\n
be paid<\/p>\n
gave his own life and defeated sin and<\/p>\n
death so that we could be freed<\/p>\n
you know the gospel is the ultimate<\/p>\n
combination of truth and love<\/p>\n
when jesus went to the cross he<\/p>\n
essentially said<\/p>\n
you me all of us are so lost<\/p>\n
so hopeless that i needed to die for you<\/p>\n
don't<\/p>\n
sing that's the truth and it's insulting<\/p>\n
it's offensive<\/p>\n
let's feel that offence<\/p>\n
but when you also when he went to the<\/p>\n
cross he also essentially said i love<\/p>\n
you so much you have so much value so<\/p>\n
much worth that i am willing to die for<\/p>\n
you<\/p>\n
young<\/p>\n
see until we know that we're that lost<\/p>\n
we won't accept that we are that loved<\/p>\n
and until we know that we are that loved<\/p>\n
we won't accept that we are that lost<\/p>\n
it's truth and love<\/p>\n
what happened<\/p>\n
and when we grasp this when we take it<\/p>\n
in when we realize that jesus did this<\/p>\n
for us<\/p>\n
then we'll be able to speak the truth in<\/p>\n
love<\/p>\n
not looking to our own interests but to<\/p>\n
the interests of those around us so that<\/p>\n
we may grow up attaining to the whole<\/p>\n
measure of the fullness of christ<\/p>\n
don't be surprised by spiritual<\/p>\n
immaturity<\/p>\n
if paul says he's a spiritual infant<\/p>\n
what are we what does that make us<\/p>\n
don't be surprised when others act in a<\/p>\n
way that isn't mature we're not saved by<\/p>\n
spiritual maturity we're saved by grace<\/p>\n
someone once said the christian life is<\/p>\n
like riding a bicycle you either go<\/p>\n
forwards or you fall down<\/p>\n
don't ever think oh i'm just this way<\/p>\n
i'll never get over this attitude this<\/p>\n
habit the sin don't ever think that you<\/p>\n
have the very life of god in you is<\/p>\n
anything too powerful for that<\/p>\n
nation<\/p>\n
united<\/p>\n
let's look to jesus and as we have the<\/p>\n
life of the trinity would we like paul<\/p>\n
says share in the same mindset of jesus<\/p>\n
would we become a community of people<\/p>\n
who can speak the truth and love so that<\/p>\n
we may grow into the fullness of christ<\/p>\n
let's<\/p>\n
pray lord jesus we thank you for your<\/p>\n
word today lord we thank you that<\/p>\n
you are here with us lord we thank you<\/p>\n
that you've given us just the privilege<\/p>\n
and the blessing of<\/p>\n
uh having the life of the trinity in us<\/p>\n
lord would you<\/p>\n
remind us of<\/p>\n
your power lord would you remind us of<\/p>\n
the truth that you've spoken over us<\/p>\n
in love<\/p>\n
and lord would this<\/p>\n
change the very structures of our heart<\/p>\n
