Uh, there

are headsets with headphones and a unit

there that you can listen uh into the

translation. So, we want to say welcome

to you. Uh, my name is Tim uh Mills. I'm

one of the elders here at Grey City

Bangkok. We have a lot of visitors

tonight. Welcome to you all. We're so

glad you're here. And uh kids, first of

all, you probably don't want to listen

to the whole sermon because you got your

own thing happening. So you may be

released. Thank you for that. All right.

Thank you. Uh so children, they do have

their own time uh of learning and

worship together. So they may leave for

that now. So if you're visiting, your

children are with you, uh you can go see

where they are going to do that right

next uh to us. So we're glad you're

here. If you're visiting, uh Ashan

mentioned earlier, you know, the name of

our of our church, Grace City Bangkok.

It's really kind of pointed about what

we hold dear, what we cling to, the

grace of God, uh in in every aspect of

our lives. And we also want to live out

that grace and that love of the Lord

Jesus Christ in this city that we call

home, Bangkok. And many of you, those of

you visiting, you live in cities as

well. We hope that you're encouraged

tonight as you return uh to your home

after your travels, after your time here

in Thailand, uh to live out the gospel

in your own community. Tonight uh we're

going to be or today we're going to be

continuing a series and I'll share more

about that in just a moment. But I want

to ask you uh talk about the word

mention the word say the word

influencer.

When I say influencer

what does that bring up uh in your mind?

What does that make you think of

influencer? Uh we've actually started a

series last week if you were here. Uh we

started that series and the the theme is

around the idea of influence

influencers.

Uh now this term uh it's a role that has

emerged in recent years. Uh if you're on

social media at all, you've seen it,

you've heard it, you've experienced.

This has emerged from the social media

realm. This idea of someone that

influences

the way the ways that other people live

their lives, right? Influencers.

Buy this product. Try this exercise

plan. listen to this music, take this

kind of vacation to this destination and

so on. Right? So, you've experienced

that. Perhaps some of you are

influencers here tonight. Uh actually, I

know one that's here tonight. So, uh but

influencers project a certain way of

living. A certain way of living. And

others are often the idea is that others

are often attracted to the possibilities

of having the same experience

or living the same kind of life as an

influencer. Okay. So in a similar way,

a Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ

is a person that has been influenced

how? By the good news of who Jesus is.

influenced by Jesus himself, captivated

by the love and grace of God. And in

turn, we hope and pray

uh that our lives will will be

characterized by a love and a care uh

for those around us. Okay? So, we've

been influenced by God's great love and

forgiveness of sin. We've sung about

we've we've uh looked at tonight

already. And it radically transforms us.

It changes the way we see the world.

It defines not just how we live, but why

we live, what we live for.

To love the Lord our God with all of our

heart, our soul, mind, strength, and to

love our neighbors as we love ourselves.

This is the core teaching of the

Christian faith. the core ethic of how

the Christian is to live.

It's what Jesus taught.

It's how Jesus lived.

So the desire of the Christian that

follows Jesus is to influence

through love, to care for, to serve this

hurting world in and through the power

and the grace of Jesus Christ. The

Christian believes that the gospel

changes everything.

changes everything

and that it influence every aspect of

our lives. So the Christian is an

influencer marked by the love of Jesus.

Now this series will be a part of the

teaching here at Grace City Bangkok for

the next two years. Not every Sunday,

but we have blocks of this sermon series

throughout the next two years. So come

on back and be a part of it. uh and it's

going to be looking at kind of three

parts.

So, these three parts uh were touched on

last week and here they are. We're going

to be looking at uh proclaimers of the

gospel, people that are living out uh

the gospel of Jesus and understanding

that as we become Christians, as we come

to faith, we too become people that are

sharing that story, living out that

story, proclaimers of the gospel of

Jesus. In the scriptures, Jesus says,

"Go forth, make disciples of all

nations." Some of you are working for

student ministries. Some of you are

working for other ministries, but all

Christians are called to be making

disciples. What do disciplemakers do?

They encourage people in their faith.

They point to Jesus and help encourage

and nurture the faith of others. So, a

Christian is a disciplemaker of Jesus.

We're also going to be looking in the

scriptures of how God used people to

build his church and also leaders of uh

leaders in the gospel. So leaders of

Jesus charact you know lead people that

are serving and caring for their

community that God has called to be

leaders. We're going to look at one of

those today. We'll look at lives of

historical figures in the scriptures and

we'll think about how has God called us.

We'll talk about that some more in just

a moment. Now, as we look at the Bible,

uh we look at the word of God. You know,

the Bible is an honest book. It's

honest. It's true. We believe it's God's

truth, but it's honest. And one of the

things that we see is that we we look at

lives of historical figures in the

scriptures, and we see their successes,

but we see their failures. We see the

ways that they've failed before God and

before others. We see people that had

great skill abilities that God gave

them. But we also see people that lacked

ability. We'll see that today even in

their own opinion of themselves.

We'll see people that had great

obedience,

but we'll see people that were stubborn,

that were rebellious even towards God.

At times, we'll see people exhibiting

good works. The Bible says God prepares

us to do good works in him. So, we'll

see people living lives that have good

things happening in them, but we'll also

see sin and brokenness in the Bible,

characters in the Bible, people in the

Bible, historical figures. The Bible is

an honest book. So, we'll look at the

lives of these leaders that God called.

We're going to talk about that today.

and lives that God used to bring about

his will and his unfolding plan that

continues to this moment

for this world that he has created. And

in all of it, in all of it, we'll see

how God brought rescue,

salvation, redemption,

and how he is bringing eternal

restoration

today through Jesus. It's coming.

The Bible says that Jesus is the author

and the perfector of our faith.

So, we'll be looking to him in the

scriptures, Old Testament, New Testament

through this series. So, in the first

series of this year, uh we're actually

studying the life of Moses. Last week,

Aan Nati started that. You can go back

and listen to that if you were not here.

Our sermons are online. Uh perhaps

you're even listening to this one

online. You can go back and find them,

follow along in this series. I'm going

to go over a little bit of what Ajanati

touched on last week to kind of bring us

up again, kind of remind us of of what

we're looking at in the life of Moses

and what God did in the life of Moses.

Moses was called by God. God called

Moses. We're going to read that as it

happened today. God worked through

Moses's life to accomplish God's

sovereign work and will.

Here's some of what Ajanati shared last

week. God used Moses to lead Israel out

of Egypt, out of slavery, out of

captivity, out of Egypt at the burning

bush. That's what we're going to look at

today. God called calls out and he

called Moses to confront Pharaoh to a

very specific purpose.

Moses became an instrument through whom

God displayed his power through the 10

plagues.

Moses led God's people through the Red

Sea and received the Ten Commandments,

the law of God. God used Moses to

establish worship practices. He taught

the people, showed the people through

Moses. He introduced the priesthood

which would mediate between God and the

people of Israel at that time in

history.

Moses established a leadership structure

by appointing a number of leaders, 70 in

fact, 70 leaders. And when Israel

sinned, we read about Israel, the people

sinning before God, Moses interceded for

the people, before God. And God used

Moses and inspired him to author to

write the first five books of the

scriptures. In fact, what we read

tonight, authored by Moses through the

inspiration of God. So, in our text, if

you want to flip to our text or turn to

it or open it uh in your app, we're

going to be looking at Exodus 3, all of

it, and Exodus 4. Um, we're going to

read all of that. It's long, but we're

going to touch on a little bit of it

tonight. Okay, let me pray for us before

we begin. And here's what we're going to

look on and focus on in this text. We're

going to look at God's call. Talk about

God's call. We're going to look at God's

revelation of himself

and God's faithfulness to accomplish his

will. Let me pray for us.

Lord, we ask that you would open our

minds and our hearts to your Bible, to

the your scriptures, the Bible today.

Help us to see what you would have us to

see. Help us to understand

what you would have us to understand.

You have created us. You have given us

our minds. You have given us the un our

ability to understand. So we ask that

you would do that. Teach us. Help us

understand from the scriptures. And help

us also not just understand, but help us

to consider what we hear.

help us really think about what we hear

and to consider it.

Some of us call ourselves Christians,

but maybe there's something tonight that

we we see aresh that you're teaching us.

And some of us maybe if we're honest, we

would say, "I don't know much about this

Christian faith. I don't I don't think I

believe it or maybe I believe parts of

it, but I have questions." So God, we

ask you to answer those questions. Those

are real questions and you honor real

questions. So we ask that do that

tonight in us. We ask and pray and lead

us in you. We ask in this in your holy

name, Lord Jesus. Amen.

Rihanna is going to read to us. Now

again, long passage, but it's going to

help us understand what happened. And

we're going to look at a few parts of

this passage.

This is the word of God.

>> Exodus chapter 3.

Now Moses was keeping the flock of his

father-in-law Jethro, the priest of

Midian. And he led his flock to the west

side of the wilderness, and came to

Horeb, the mountain of God. And the

angel of the Lord appeared to him in a

flame of fire out of the midst of a

bush. He looked, and behold, the bush

was burning, yet it was not consumed.

And Moses said, "I will turn aside to

see this great sight, why the bush is

not burned." When the Lord saw that he

turned aside to see, God called to him

out of the bush, "Moses, Moses." And he

said, "Here I am." Then he said, "Do not

come near. Take your sandals off your

feet, for the place on which you are

standing is holy ground." And he said,

"I am the God of your father, the God of

Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God

of Jacob." And Moses hid his face, for

he was afraid to look at God. Then the

Lord said, "I have surely seen the

affliction of my people who are in Egypt

and have heard their cry because of

their taskmasters.

I know their sufferings, and I have come

down to deliver them out of the hand of

the Egyptians, and to bring them up out

of that land to a good and broad land, a

land flowing with milk and honey, to the

place of the Canaanites, the Hittites,

the Amorites, the Perizzites, the

Hivites, and the Jebusites.

And now, behold, the cry of the people

of Israel has come to me, and I have

also seen the oppression with which the

Egyptians oppressed them. Come, I will

send you to Pharaoh, so that you may

bring my people, the children of Israel,

out of Egypt. But Moses said to God,

"Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh

and bring the children of Israel, out of

Egypt?"

He said, "But I will be with you, and

this shall be the sign for you. But I

have sent you when you have brought the

people out of Egypt, you shall serve God

on this mountain." Then Moses said to

God, "If I come to the people of Israel

and say to them, the God of your fathers

has sent me to you, and they ask me,

"What is his name? What shall I say to

them?" God said to Moses, "I am who I

am." And he said, "Say this to the

people of Israel. I am has sent me to

you." God also said to Moses, "Say this

to the people of Israel. The Lord, the

God of your fathers, the God of Abraham,

the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob,

has sent me to you. This is my name

forever, and thus I am to be remembered

throughout all generations."

Go and gather the elders of Israel

together and say to them, "The Lord, the

of Isaac, and of Jacob, has appeared to

me, saying, I have observed you and what

has been done to you in Egypt. And I

promise that I will bring you up out of

the affliction of Egypt, to the land of

the Canaanites, the Hittites, the

Amorites, the Parizzites, the Hivites,

and the Jebusites, a land flowing with

milk and honey. and they will listen to

your voice. And you and the elders of

Israel shall go to the king of Egypt and

say to him, "The Lord, the God of the

Hebrews, has met with us. And now please

let us go a three days journey into the

wilderness that we may sacrifice to the

Lord our God. But I know that the king

of Egypt will not let you go unless

compelled by a mighty hand. So I will

stretch out my hand and strike Egypt

with all the wonders that I will do in

it. after that he will let you go. And I

will give this people favor in the sight

of the Egyptians. And when you go, you

shall not go empty. But each woman shall

ask of her neighbor and any woman who

lives in her house for silver and gold

jewelry and for clothing. You shall put

them on your sons and on your daughters.

So you shall plunder the Egyptians.

Chapter 4. Then Moses answered, "But

behold, they will not believe me or

listen to my voice, for they will say,

'The Lord did not appear to you." The

Lord said to him, "What is that in your

hand?" He said, "A staff." And he said,

"Throw it on the ground." So he threw it

on the ground and it became a serpent.

And Moses ran from it. But the Lord said

to Moses, "Put out your hand and catch

it by the tail." So he put out his hand

and caught it, and it became a staff in

his hand, that they may believe that the

Lord, the God of their fathers, the God

of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the

God of Jacob, has appeared to you."

Again, the Lord said to him, "Put your

hand inside your cloak." And he put his

hand inside his cloak, and when he took

it out, behold, his hand was lepous like

snow. Then God said, "Put your hand back

inside your cloak." So he put his hand

back inside his cloak, and when he took

it out, behold, it was restored like the

rest of his flesh. If they will not

believe you, God said, or listen to the

first sign, they may believe the latter

sign. If they will not believe even

these two signs, or listen to your

voice, you shall take some water from

the Nile and pour it on the dry ground.

And the water that you shall take from

the Nile will become blood on the dry

ground.

But Moses said to the Lord, "Oh my Lord,

I am not eloquent either in the past or

since you have spoken to your servant,

but I am slow of speech and of tongue."

Then the Lord said to him, "Who has made

man's mouth? Who makes him mute or deaf

or seeing or blind? Is it not I, the

Lord? Now therefore go, and I will be

with your mouth and teach you what you

shall speak." But he said, "Oh my Lord,

please send someone else." Then the

anger of the Lord was kindled against

Moses, and he said, "Is there not Aaron,

your brother, the Levite? I know that he

can speak well. Behold, he is coming out

to meet you, and when he sees you, he

will be glad in his heart. You shall

speak to him, and put the words in his

mouth, and I will be with your mouth,

and with his mouth, and will teach you

both what to do. He shall speak for you

to the people and he shall be your mouth

and you shall be as God to him and take

in your hand the staff with which you

shall do the signs.

>> This is the word of God.

So this this passage opens uh and the

scene we're given is this mountain.

This mountain uh called Horeb actually

is also referred to as Mount Si. Perhaps

you're more familiar with that name,

that term. Now, the name listed here,

Horeb, is uh traditionally understood to

mean Mount Cyani or even describes this

particular region

in which the mountain was located is

located. So, this particular mountain

becomes an important location. It's

interesting. It becomes an important

location as events unfold. And one theme

we'll see throughout the Bible and

throughout Exodus as we're studying

Moses's life is that you'll see these

reoccurring themes. Okay, so this

location uh is interesting because as

events unfold through the story book of

Exodus and beyond um you know right here

tonight we see how God's call to Moses

happens in this location. Later in just

a few chapters uh list where it's

recorded uh Aaron will meet again with

Moses. God's presence later will descend

upon this mountain mount si when uh

Israel has come out of Egypt. Kind of

skipping ahead here uh and and when God

gives Moses the Ten Commandments. So a

lot is going to happen on this on this

mountain. Some significant events will

happen. And as we read the Bible, as we

read through the Bible, we see this

continuity. We see this unfolding of

God's purposes, God's plans.

God calls Moses to help lead his people.

He's given some details here about what

that's going to look like. lead them out

of captivity in Egypt, go to before

Pharaoh, and God will come again later

to Moses

in the future bringing his holy law to

the people to lead them and to guide

them. So we can look back on the story

and see, but this is where this is

happening, this burning bush. Now, in

the in the second verse here, we see

that the angel uh in the second verse,

we read this. It says, "The angel of the

Lord appeared to him." Now, this term,

this title, angel of the Lord, it's it's

used in a number of instances in the Old

Testament. Uh there's a passage like in

in Genesis 22. Uh we read about the

angel of the Lord calls out to Abraham.

Um or other parts of the text uh here

too make it clear that it's God speaking

out to Abraham in Genesis 22. in other

parts of Exodus in judges in the book of

Joshua there's uh with this angel of the

lord there's a di a divine identity uh

and these characteristics of divinity um

angel of the lord is uh is called yahweh

uh speaks with authority as god forgives

sins so many scholars note these

instances these occurrences and even

some look at these as as what are called

theophanes

now a theophony is an instance, an

occurrence that foreshadows

Christ, foreshadows Jesus and what Jesus

would come to do. The pre-incarnate

Christ interacting with mankind. So,

it's not a stretch of the imagination to

see, you know, the trinitarian aspect of

God, the Godhead interacting with

humanity. So at this at this point, the

angel of the Lord, God coming to

interact with Moses, interact with

humanity when God would later take on

flesh and enter into this

world that he created. So at this

mountain at Horeb, Mount Si, Moses is

out tending, right, the flock, and he

sees this bush that's a flame. It's it's

burning. If we can, you know, imagine

that

it would it would strike up our

curiosity, right? Like first of all, why

is it on fire? And why isn't the fire

destroying this bush? It's not consumed.

How, you know, his curiosity

as it would for us? He's drawn to it. He

goes over to it. There's this mystery,

this amazing event is unfolding here.

And as he approaches this bush, the text

says that God makes himself known. God

calls out to Moses

out of this out of this, you know, God's

presence descending in this place. And

God calls out to Moses with this message

of what God is is going to do in and

through him. It's this miraculous event.

It's this amazing event.

God revealing the plan that he has for

Moses's life. In verse 5, Moses is told,

warned to not come near,

to remove his sandals. It's interesting.

Remove his sandals.

Why? Well, we're told this place, this

ordinary mountain, this ordinary part of

this mountain suddenly

is sacred.

It's become holy.

Not in and of itself. Not that soil, not

those rocks, not that bush,

but because of the presence of God.

Moses is in the presence of God, the

holy God. And God says, "Stop. You

cannot come closer. Take off your

sandals." And Moses even hides from

this, right? He's he's aware of this and

he hides and it says, "You cannot look

upon God. God is holy and God is the one

who makes and declares people and places

holy. God's presence here. So here God

is called out to Moses and as we'll

continue to see through what we read

tonight and through Moses's story, we'll

see where this leads. We'll see where

this leads. Now before we move on,

uh I want to I want to draw our

attention to this idea of God's call.

So God calls out to Moses, but he's also

calling to Moses. He's telling Moses

what he will do. There's a a call. So in

in our faith in Christianity, we talk

about this. God has called me or been

called by God. When when someone turns

to faith in Jesus Christ, there has been

a call on your life like God has has

called out to you through his word,

through his spirit. God has called into

you, called into your heart. So in the

Christian faith, we speak of this this

inward call, this internal call that we

sense God working in our hearts. And and

some of you may have like grown up in a

in a Christian home and you think I

don't I can't really remember a time

where I didn't believe these things. And

so yeah, God calling into your speaking

into your life through your family,

through your community. Some of you

later in life, you come to faith. You're

like, I I didn't believe now I believe.

God worked in my heart. There's this

inward understanding, this call. And we

also talk about this outward call. So

immer call being call of Jesus you know

found in the gospel it's found in the

gospel and then us being found in the

gospel

found by the gospel but then and that's

Jesus right saying come and follow me we

see that in the New Testament Jesus

saying two people specifically come

leave that leave what you're doing leave

what you believe and follow me believe

in me I have come to rescue you to lead

you so there's that call new life in and

through Jesus. And then the outward call

we've touched on uh briefly earlier um

this outward call is like uh to love the

Lord your God, right? Like so how you

can think of it as the inworking and the

outworking like this is what we believe

and then what does that mean? How do we

live? And we talked about that at the

beginning tonight. This outward call is

to love the Lord your God. This is found

in the scriptures. Love the Lord your

God with with everything, right? our

heart, soul, mind, strength, everything,

all that we are. And then God works

through us to love others changes,

right? The radical ethic of the

Christian faith. Love those who are

lovable. Yes. But love those who are

difficult difficult to love. Yes. Bible

even saying love your enemies. How?

Through the power and the work of Jesus

in our hearts to change our hearts. So

yes, you can think of this as an

inworking um this outward and then an

outworking of this [snorts] internal

understanding and our faith in Jesus.

This outward call is to serve God

faithfully, right? God gives us, we even

maybe have talked about vocation,

calling vocos about how we're to live,

where we're to serve. And um there's an

obedience to that in every area of our

life with our families, uh to our church

community, with our neighbors, in our

professions, in our schools, uh wherever

we find ourselves in our neighborhoods,

in our apartments, we are to live out

this this inward call with an outward

call, outward um living. So we talk

about this a lot at Grace City. This is,

you know, we're we're an urban church.

We want to love this city. We talk about

this a lot. So, some of you may be

saying, "Yes, yes, we've heard this

before and we want to keep talking about

it." So, here with Moses's call, we see

a specific task, right? There's the

inward call Moses's life. He's a

follower of Yahweh, a follower of God.

There's this there's this outward call

and there's this specific call that God

says, "Here's what I'm going to do

through you." He calls to Moses with a

particular work.

If you look back through the Bible, look

ahead through the Bible, look at our

lives, look back in our lives, you know,

God called Abraham to leave his home.

God called David, King David to lead

Israel. Called him from being a shepherd

to be a king, lead the people. God

called Mary to carry and bear the son of

God.

God called the apostle Paul to preach

the gospel to the Gentiles.

Inward, outward spec uh specific

or unique calling. We see this happening

in the scriptures. We see this happening

in our own lives.

All of God. All of this of God and by

God and for God's good unfolding plan.

So what happens here at the bush? God

reveals himself

to Moses.

In verse six,

he says, "I am the God of your father."

God says, "I am the God of your father."

the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac,

the God of Jacob.

Now, this lineage,

it shows Moses, demonstrates to Moses

and to us that God is the God, the God

that has been working all along to this

point and and to this point, working in

all of these things that have been

happening to fulfill his promises, his

covenantal promises.

So to Moses, this voice, this presence

says,"I am God. I am the God that you

know. I am the God of your fathers."

Now, but God reveals this information uh

as he reveals himself to Moses to

underscore like all that you hear is

part of my unfolding plan. Remember,

Moses is hearing this and he's baffled.

I'm sure he's terrified. I'm sure. And

God is is revealing himself, identifying

himself and then giving a very specific

message to Moses. God says he has seen

the affliction.

He has seen the suffering.

He knows the suffering of the people.

He's heard their cries and he's acting

to deliver them.

He's going to do something.

God is going to demonstrate his power

and he's going to do it through Moses.

Now, Moses is quick to question this.

Quick to question this out of fear, out

of doubt,

out of a lot of things, I'm sure, as we

likely would, I'm sure. But here are two

truths that we learn about God in this

text.

God has compassion

on those that call out to him.

Israel calling out to God. Do you hear

us? Yes. He's come. He's going to act.

God has compassion on those that call

out to him. And God equips and works

through those he calls to serve him. God

has compassion on those that call out to

him. Even today,

this is the God of the Bible. even

today. Does God hear? Yes. Does God know

of my suffering? Yes. It's what

Christians cling to. God knows. And then

God equips and works through those he

calls to serve him. Now, not only that,

right? Not only does he equip Moses

here, but God says

he promises to do what? To be with

Moses. To be with Moses.

God has come to rescue his people. He

will work through Moses to bring this

all about. And God reveals that he will

be with Moses. He reveals to Moses that

he will reveal himself further to the

people through Moses. He will reveal

himself to Israel, his power. He will

reveal himself to Pharaoh through his

wondrous works and power. God will

deliver. God is going to do this. Why?

He's promised.

And he is a God that meets his promises

and he's demonstrating this.

So Moses asks God for further

clarification.

He asks God for instructions

so he can because he can imagine what's

going to happen if he's going to go

before Pharaoh. And so in verse 13, look

at that. The God of your fathers has

sent you. Who is this God? Right now

remember in Egypt and surrounding

nations and other faiths even at this

time other religions

uh there was pluralism there was

polytheism right multiple gods. Um the

Egyptians honored and worshiped many

many different gods right in their in

their understanding of the world. And so

Pharaoh is surely going to ask who is

this god right? Who god who and and what

power does this god have? What authority

does this god have? like who what what

are you talking about? And so Moses

wants to know and God's response is to

affirm the lineage and the covenantal

promises. God is the one true God, the

powerful God, the creator God, the

sustainer God of all that is. And God is

ready to demonstrate

his power. How? Through wonders and

miraculous signs. This is what is going

to speak to Pharaoh.

Pharaoh's going to want to say, "Well,

show me. Show me."

And then we see what happens here is

that God actually does a trial run.

Moses needs to see. So, it's sort of a

trial run, if you will, with Moses to

show Moses this power to reveal to Moses

this power. So, the scene is being set.

God has identified himself to Moses.

He's connected himself with the lineage

of Israel. He's identified himself and

he's ready to act to fulfill his

covenant promises.

And God's response of, and this is what

you tell Pharaoh, God's response is, I

am who I am.

Tell Pharaoh,

I am has sent you.

I am has sent you. Now, this phrase is

just full of so much meaning in Hebrew

for the people. Then Jesus uses this

phrase later and it gets him in a lot of

trouble with the religious leaders of

the day. So, we could really spend a lot

of time on this, but again, we're

looking at just a snapshot of Moses's

life tonight and we will continue

looking at his life. You'll see how all

these things work together. But this is

a huge a huge statement that God is

making. I am who I am.

Speaking of God's self-existence,

God's divine nature. God is creator and

sustainer. Like everything is held

together in and by God's power. And that

God is immutable. Meaning that God does

not change.

God is the same.

the God of your fathers, the God of

Abraham, Isaac, Jacob. So all of these

things are wrapped up in this in this

phrase. I am who I am. Do not change.

I am God, the create, the creator, the

maker of all, the sustainer of all. I am

the only God. I am the powerful God. All

of that wrapped up in that meaning or

that in that phrase, I am who I am. And

so Moses says,

"Tell Pharaoh,

I am has sent you."

So God has fully prepared Moses with

everything he needs. And that major

piece is I I will be with you. I will be

with you.

Now, God's faithfulness to accomplish

his will even after God

has shown these signs, right? right?

Like we're reading about them and trying

to imagine them, trying to imagine what

that must have been like. But even after

God demonstrated these sides to Moses,

we see and maybe understand that Moses

is consumed with fear and doubt.

Fear and doubt. He's focused on himself.

He's focused on what he says is his lack

of eloquence, lack of ability.

He cites that he says, you know, I

I don't know what to say. I'm I'm not

I'm not very good. Like, you don't want

to send me. I'm not I'm not the one. You

don't want to do this. Even though God

has just shown these signs and

instructions and even has said, I will

be with you. So, so God actually

confront confronts Moses. He talks about

that. Who who made you?

Who created you? Who fashioned you in

your mother's womb?

I will be with you. I will be your

mouth. Moses is still unsure. Send

somebody else. Isn't there anybody else?

We've seen We see this right in the

scriptures and perhaps we see it in our

own hearts.

Don't you want to do this through

someone else?

And the text says that God's anger was

kindled against Moses.

And so what we really see here is God's

great patience,

his grace, his mercy. It's evident here.

He shows compassion. He shows mercy in

the midst of Moses's fear and doubt.

Fear and doubt.

Our own reluctance is often fueled by

fear and doubt. Right? I can't do that.

I won't do that. Or what if I did that?

What happens? Right? Fear and doubt.

But here we see God is going to deliver

on his promises. God is faithful to

accomplish what he's going to

accomplish. And even though Moses is

being difficult to work with, God is

still going to work through him, still

going to provide through him. And for

him, how does he do that? He says,

"Look, here's Aaron.

Aaron's going to go with you, too."

That's incredible patience and love and

mercy from God here.

God says, "I'll speak through him. I

will be with you and teach you both what

to do."

It's merciful. It's amazing, right? I

mean, Moses's fear and reluctance does

not thwart God's plan.

Doesn't

God's still going to do this. Still

going to work through Moses.

Now, we've looked at just a few things

tonight. We're going to be looking at

more of what happens through Moses's

life. Now, Moses was called to lead.

This is a sermon about leadership.

What does that mean to lead? Right? What

are we called to? And all of us in a way

are called to lead others.

You know, the Bible at other places, it

speaks about living very simply before

Love your neighbor. What does it mean to

love your neighbor? This week, who like

asking that question, it's asked of

Jesus. Who is my neighbor? And Jesus

shares, right? He teaches that man who

his neighbor is.

We have physical neighbors live next

door to us and then the neighbor is the

other.

So who's who's that person maybe this

week

where we, you know, God has called us to

love him, love God, and to love others

in his name. Who needs to hear of God's

love this week? What does that look

like? Right? What does that look like?

Maybe that can be our prayer is that God

would show us this week.

So, um, as as we think about these three

things that God is

he's faithful to accomplish his will,

that God is is clear to reveal himself,

and that God does have this call upon

us, this inward call, this outward call.

What does that look like for us now as

followers of Jesus right now and in this

week ahead?

[snorts] There's a a story I heard some

years ago that I'll close with that that

speaks about this in a way. And I don't

know if it's a real story, but it's a

good story that kind of focuses as an

example

about God's work in our lives and how

God invites us to be a part of what he's

doing.

And a story goes like this. There's a

father

and he has this summer project. Kids are

out of school and he's going to build

this this shed, you know, small building

out in the back of the house.

And he thinks this will be great to do

with the kids. He has young kids, but

he's like, I'm gonna I'm going to do I'm

going to bring the kids together each

day. We'll work on it. We'll build this

together. And so they set out to do it.

Now there are power tools involved.

It's dangerous. Uh there are precise

measurements that need to be made and

you know it needs to look good. It needs

to function. And so the kids come out

with their little plastic tools, right?

Hammer, saw.

Uh they get to help with the painting.

The father lets them paint, you know,

when the shed's done. But at the end of

the day, it's clear like they were so

limited in what they could do, right? So

limited.

But they were invited to be a part of

what of what the father was doing,

right? Building this shed. And the

father helped them and the father worked

through them.

And at the end of the day, at the end of

the summer, if you will, when this shed

was done, we could honestly say in this

story too, it was all the father's work.

It was all the father's work. And yet,

this father brought his children in to

be a part of it. And there was love and

there was laughter and there was joy.

We can see where this analogy goes,

right? God is a faithful God.

The God that we worship as Christians is

the God of our fathers. The God of

Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, God of Moses,

the God that descended on this mountain

centuries ago to reveal himself fully

to a man that he would use to deliver

his people.

There's so much there.

I am. The great I am is calling out to

us and working here today in this world.

Why? Because he's made promises and he's

going to deliver on those promises.

Now, we have a lot more of Moses ahead.

Any any binge watchers out there of like

Netflix shows, you got to come back for

Moses week three. I mean, there's some

amazing stuff that's going to happen.

And we have two years of this ahead. not

not the entire two years, but we're

going to be looking at a lot of passages

in the Bible in this theme of how we are

influenced and God leads us to care for

this world around us. So, a lot more of

Moses ahead. You're free to read ahead,

can skip ahead. Uh, more sermons coming.

We can't cover it all today. We didn't

cover it all today.

But let us ponder.

Let us meditate. Let us sit with what we

have seen and been reminded of today.

God is faithful to call. God is faithful

to reveal himself.

And he's faithful to accomplish

his good will.

In this story, just in this part that we

read even today, God's covenantal

promises

were being fulfilled like they were

happening.

They were happening.

God had promised to rescue his people

and he was he was doing it. He heard

their cries and he was acting.

He was he was he had promised to deliver

them from their sin, from death and he

was doing it. And this is all leading

ahead to the coming Messiah. It's all

pointing ahead to Jesus. When Jesus

would come, Emmanuel, God with us, just

like God was with Moses.

Emmanuel coming into this world through

Jesus

to be with us.

In the New Testament, a couple of

passages

in first Timothy, of course, this

looking about looking to the coming one.

There is one God

and one mediator between God and man,

men, the man Jesus Christ, who gave

himself a ransom for all to be testified

in due time.

And then in John the 14th chapter, Jesus

speaking of himself saying this, I am

the way.

I am the way, the truth, and the life.

No man comes to the father

but by me. Friends, if you are a

believer, a follower of Jesus, if you're

a Christian, maybe you've been a

Christian for a long time, maybe you've

come to faith in in recent years.

Be reminded of this today. You've been

called like the God of Abraham, Isaac,

and Jacob called you.

That inward calling, he's also given you

an outward call. Love and care, right?

Serve, grow in the gospel and serve. So,

be reminded by that today. Be encouraged

by that today. Even this week, even

maybe we feel reluctant like Moses, I

can't go to my colleague.

You can.

Why?

Emmanuel,

our God who's with us.

And then some of you tonight might say,

you know what? I again, like I prayed

earlier tonight, I don't I'm not a

Christian. I'll be honest about that.

You know, you might say, I'm not a

Christian. Um I have questions. I have

real questions. And those questions kind

of prevent me from, you know, fully

believing. First of all, let me say

we're really glad that you're here

because we want to be a church that

really honors those questions. We want

to be welcoming and we want to say this

is what we believe and and we understand

we understand those questions. Even

believers here maybe had those questions

at some point in their journey. And so

we want to honor you and those questions

by speaking with you by hearing from you

about those questions. So anyway, my my

hope for you tonight is that you think

about this now you consider this like is

this true?

And if if God is God and we believe God

is a God that reveals,

would you ask would you ask God

to reveal

himself to you? So that's that's my hope

for you. That's my hope for you is that

you would entertain this text or

entertain the claims of the Bible.

Entertain the claims of Jesus about

himself that he is the way, the truth,

and the life. Is he? Ask him. Ask him.

We believe that God answers.

Let me pray. Let me pray for us. God, we

thank you that we can consider

uh the truths of these passage, this

passage today. It's an it's an amazing

part of the scriptures. And even as we

try to wrap our imaginations around this

bush on fire, not being consumed

and and you coming in in your presence

to speak

with Moses, it's just it's an amazing

story. Help us understand it. Help us

glean from it. Help us to wrap our

understanding and thinking around it.

But not just that, change us through it.

You know, some of us may see uh in our

own hearts like same tendencies, if

we're honest, that Moses struggled with.

Maybe we just have bad attitudes

sometimes. I know I do.

So, help me with that. Maybe we have

doubts, like real questions. Even when

we have faith in you, we still like

wrestle with with questions and and and

we're tempted to doubt or we do doubt.

Help us in that. Maybe we have a lack of

desire to obey you. Maybe we just don't

know how to trust you in a certain

situation or with a certain, you know,

something that happens in our lives and

we think, "Now what? Now, now what? I

believe, but help my unbelief." That's

biblical. That question was posed in the

New Testament. Help my unbelief.

Perhaps some of us we're just we

struggle with fear like Moses did or or

doubt like in our own hearts we think ah

[sighs] I just I can't do this or I'm

not strong enough or I'm I just oh I I

just can't do it. So help us to lean

help us to lean into you and be reminded

that you say you don't have to do it. In

fact you cannot do it. Trust me. So help

us with that. Help us to trust you. help

us to even know what that means and

looks like.

Would you remind us that there's no fear

in love? That perfect love casts out

fear.

God, as you've demonstrated grace and

patience, like in this passage with

Moses, we see that when when he was so

reluctant and just saying, "I can't do

it, you know, send someone else." And

yet, you know, your anger was kindled,

but it was an anger that was

undergurtded with love. You were

merciful to him, and you sent Aaron. You

provided even in that, you still worked

through Moses. You didn't cast him out.

You didn't You didn't come down so harsh

on him.

You were merciful, God. You are

merciful. So, help us see that mercy.

Encourage us. Encourage us in these

truths of the gospel.

and you have promised to be with us,

God. And some of us, we we say that we

say Emmanuel, it rolls off our tongues

and we say God with us and yet we don't

feel it. And so we need you to work in

us to just remind us even when we feel

like that desert place in our faith.

Help us to know that you are there. Even

if we don't feel it, that you are there.

And help us in that moment. Help us in

that season.

Help us to follow you. Help us to

believe and to cling to your

faithfulness.

We ask and pray all of this in your holy

","":"
["GET
