the past two weeks we've been

looking at

the book of ephesians taking different

angles

on the question what does it mean

to be a

christian so the first week

we talked about god's point of view

versus our own

and how in christ we have been given

every spiritual blessing

last week we looked at paul's prayer for

the church

that they may know the incomparable

power that god has given

to us

as we live as his people

and we also talked about how part of

this power is realizing that we are his

fullness that god chooses to reveal

himself through the church through us

we said that to the extent that we grasp

this truth it gives us power to not sin

and so our text for today is ephesians 2

1 to

um so i'll read the text to us and feel

free to follow along in english

and tie on the screen

next slide please

people in the bag

all right ephesians 2 1-10

as for you you are dead in your

transgressions and sins in which you

used to live when you followed the ways

of this world and of the ruler of the

kingdom of the air the spirit who is now

at work in those who are disobedient

all of us also lived among them at one

time gratifying the cravings of our

flesh and following its desires and

thoughts

like the rest we were by nature

deserving of wrath

but because of his great love for us

god who is rich in mercy made us alive

with christ jesus even when we were dead

in transgressions it is by grace you

have been saved

and god raised us up with christ and

seated us with him

in the heavenly realms in christ jesus

in order that in the coming ages he

might show the incomparable riches of

his grace

expressed in his kindness to us in

christ jesus

for it is by grace you have been saved

through faith and this is not from

yourselves it is the gift of god

not by works so that no one can boast

for we are god's handiwork created in

christ jesus to do good works which god

prepared in advance for us to do this is

the word of god

so our theme

for our text this week is pretty

straightforward

paul tells us in verse 4 that it is by

grace you have been saved

then he tells us again

in verse 7 about the incomparable riches

of god's grace

and just in case we missed it the first

time

he tells us again in verse 8

is it great is by grace you have been

saved hold that thought

so this passage is one of the richest

um

richest texts in all the scripture

and in it paul tells us about the grace

of god

and the god of grace

and he tells us that the way we see

god's grace is through salvation

so this theme of god's grace

may be familiar to a lot of us

it's even in our name grace city bangkok

a lot of us might like the sound of this

we might think oh saved by grace i know

what that means i like a god who's

forgiving i think i understand the idea

that we're saved by grace

so we may think that we understand it

we may also know a lot about god's grace

but

do we really know it do we really are we

living by it

if you have been a christian for quite

some time

if you've grown up around christianity

or you've come to faith for a few years

now

if you've been a christian for some time

and christianity has not been a

life-changing power

if it has not been a power

that we see changing us from the inside

it's most likely because we don't

understand god's grace

exactly is grace

well paul tells us it's a gift

grace can be defined many different ways

but at its heart it's a gift it's

something that's given to us

grace is not something that we've worked

for

it's something that we haven't earned we

haven't paid for it's free

now consider this

there are a lot of gifts that

don't change our lives

so for instance you go to a work

conference and you receive a packet that

you can keep

and in this packet you have you have

shirts

you get mugs

you get you you can get hand sanitizer

it's all stamped with the company's logo

that's a gift that's grace but does it

change your life

most likely no

because you probably already have all

these things and even if you didn't

they're relatively easy to get

so it doesn't change your life because

one it's not necessary for life and two

it's not costly

but what if you were dying from a

disease

and you needed medical treatment

otherwise you would die

the treatment is too expensive for you

to pay

and so you're going to die but you have

a friend you know someone who sells

everything

sells everything they have just to pay

for you to have medical treatment

what about that that's also a free gift

just like the pencils but that's

different right

it's life-changing it's life-changing

because without this gift you would die

and because it was so costly your

friends sold everything they had just so

you'd have so you could have this

treatment

the grace of your friend

saved you from dying

now this passage tells us about god

graciously saving us so we're going to

look at it this way it's broken down

into three parts verses one to three

tell us what we're saved from

verses 8 to 10

tell us what we're saved to

and verses 4 to 7 tell us

how we're saved

so

let's go

so paul starts by saying

transgressions and sins

which brings us to the question what is

sin

verse 2 elaborates on this paul says

when you followed the ways of this world

and then in verse 3 he says gratifying

the cravings of our flesh and following

its desires and thoughts

and so from this what we see is part of

what sin means is to be enslaved

now the greek word here for follow is

much stronger than the word that we have

because in greek

the word means to be mastered to be

controlled by in english we see follow

and we think okay it's a choice we're

choosing to follow the ways of this

world but in the greek it's referring to

the fact that we are mastered by it that

we have that we're absolutely powerless

and so the reason it says that we're

dead in sin

is because we're as helpless as a dead

body

we can't do anything about it

and it says we're controlled by the ways

of this world

the ruler of the kingdom of air and the

cravings of our flesh

we don't have time to deeply look into

the nuances of what it means to follow

the ways of the world or being enslaved

to the devil but the main idea here is

to be enslaved in sin

means we gratify the cravings of our

flesh we follow its desires and thoughts

so the cravings of our flesh in this

context does not refer to our physical

it actually refers to

self-centered human nature

and so that's what's driving us this is

what's enslaving us according to paul

our flesh our self-centered human nature

okay here's a point where someone might

say okay so we're enslaved because we're

following our desires

we're enslaved because we are doing

whatever we want that doesn't sound like

slavery that actually sounds like

freedom

and that's that's true because the way

that a lot of us today define freedom

is the ability to do whatever we want

in other words freedom is the absence of

restrictions

but here paul tells us that

that's not freedom that's actually death

how's that

so imagine this imagine if a fish

decided that it wanted to do whatever it

wanted the fish says i'm free i'm going

to do what i want and i want to live on

land

what happens to the fish it dies

same would happen if a bird decided i

want to do what i want i'm free i want

to live in the water what happens

that's right the bird dies

and if you have a car so this this

doesn't just work in nature this works

with man-made things as well if you have

a car

and you say

i'm not going to change the oil in my

car because i don't want to i'm free to

do whatever i want i'm not going to

change the oil in my car what happens to

the car

maybe it works for a few months maybe it

works for a year maybe two years but

eventually it breaks down it breaks down

and dies

why is that because in each instance the

fish the car

um the bird

they're not being treated according to

how they were designed

not treating these things according to

how they were designed ends in their

death it kills them

and so paul tells us here

that

serving our self-centered human nature

isn't freedom it's slavery it's death

sin isn't just an action it's not just

something we do

we see here that it's an enslaving power

that has a hold on us

so how is it how is it slavery

think about this to be a sinner the

bible says is to have a small computer

in our heart that never stops

it goes on all the time it's never

resting and it's always watching it's

always analyzing it's always comparing

every person every object every

situation the computer just goes and

analyzes everything and it's asking

what's in it for me

everything is analyzed to the degree

that it benefits our happiness our glory

our reputation

comfort our control

that's

it doesn't always look like this there's

two kinds of self-centered human nature

because self-centeredness can either

drive us

to be really bad

but it can also drive us to be really

good

the first one is quite obvious if we

look at the tyrants of the world

throughout history we see that they've

done horrible things and a lot of that

is to do with self-centeredness

people use other people people exploit

other people for their own gain and that

shows us that self-centeredness can lead

us to be very bad but

what happens more often is that

self-centeredness

looks good on the outside

it leads us to do things that look

really really good

because if we desperately need

to feel good about ourselves

if we desperately need to feel validated

there's no better way to have

someone like us

than to serve other people

than to help other people than to be a

good person

and so self-centeredness drives a lot of

people into being very very good and so

we'll be very hospitable we'll be good

parents we'll be good children

we'll be good friends we'll serve other

people

but self-centeredness leads us to do all

these outwardly good things for our own

sake

we do it so that we're liked we do it so

we're affirmed we do it so we feel

needed we do it so that we feel secure

outwardly we're being really really good

but inwardly it's actually all about us

and not only that

can also lead us to be very religious

too

we'll read the bible we'll come to

church we'll obey god we'll join a small

group we'll serve the needy we'll pray

outwardly all very very good things

self-centeredness leads us to do all

these things for us and how do you know

this is how you know if god doesn't work

in our lives like we had hoped he would

he doesn't allow

certain prayers to be answered he allows

certain bad things to happen to us

if those things happen to us and we say

i'm done with god he isn't answering my

prayers i'm doing all this for god i'm

serving people coming to church i'm

obeying him i'm being holy i'm doing all

this for him and he can't do this for me

that shows us that all of our obedience

wasn't out of love for god

but we were just using god to get what

we wanted

so self-centeredness

can sometimes make us look outwardly

but on the inside it's all about us

and it's also miserable right

self-centeredness it's miserable it

feels like hell

we're constantly comparing constantly

thinking about am i getting the respect

i deserve

constantly thinking am i being treated

as well as i should

constantly concerned about our own ego

always getting offended

it's miserable self-centeredness is

miserable

okay and so so here's where someone

might say all right i understand what

you're saying but i think paul is being

very harsh when he says we're dead in

our sins

i don't think we're powerless are we

actually powerless

in romans 7

paul the same person who wrote ephesians

he says

i have the desire to do what is good

but i can't carry it out

so i find it to be a principle that

when i most want to do good evil is

there with me

i am sold as a slave under sin

paul is saying the more i try to go the

more i try to do good

the more i see i'm powerless to do

what is good

so someone might say

i've never felt anything like that i've

never experienced the powerlessness

to do good i can do good when i see it

but paul here he says the more i try

the more i try the more i'm aware i

can't

which means that if we aren't aware that

we're slaves

we're not trying hard enough

because paul says the more i try that's

when i see so here's a here's a

challenge

try living by the golden rule for the

next 12 hours

meeting the needs of other people

with the same speed the same concern the

same energy

the same focus that we would meet our

own that's the golden rule right treat

us the way you want to be treated try

living by the golden rule

for the next 12 hours

that's all we need that's all we'll need

to

see that we're powerless to do the good

that we know we should

we're dead in our sin

and so

this is the life that god saves us from

this is the life

apart from god

and so now we'll go into

the end of the passage

and we'll see the kind of life that

we're saved for

the kind of life that god

wants us to live

this is the kind of life that god wants

to give us as a gift through salvation

so remember we had said that

true freedom doesn't come from doing

what we want

that leads to death freedom true freedom

is found in living according to our

design

and so we see a few things here that

outline to us what

a life of true freedom is like

so firstly verse 10

says that we are god's handiwork

his workmanship

so the the greek word here is poema this

is how we get the word poem

and the idea here is

c.s lewis he puts this a lot better he

says we are a divine work of art

that's the idea that's being

communicated here

what does that mean art what is art art

is beautiful right it's valuable

it's a

expression it's an outwards expression

of the artist

it's an expression of the inner being of

the artist

imagine that

and to you right one of the most widely

respected biblical scholars says that

verse 10 is one of the central

statements of how christians are at the

center of god's new creation

let's think about this for a second if

we are god's

workmanship if we are his handiwork

do you know how much value you have

you are an expression of

the divine artist of god himself

and so what that means is

one that we're all uniquely designed

and that two god knows what we're fitted

because he knows us a lot better than we

know ourselves

so our culture our ethnicity our

nationality our socioeconomic status

our experiences our families

things that we don't even think are

impressive or things that we might look

at and say oh i'm

that's a bad thing that happened to me

they all work together and show us that

there are certain kinds of good works

that because of who we are because we've

been uniquely made

there are some things that only we can

do

so tim keller he likes to say

there are some needs that only you can

see

there are some hands that only you can

hold

and there are some people that only you

can reach

there are certain good works that god

has prepared for us that only we can do

so that's one thing of what it means to

be god's workmanship

but this can also be applied more

universally

more generally as the kind of life that

all christians are called to

this is a new way of being human the

true way of being human

conforming to the standards that god

has always intended

living according to our design that's

how we get freedom

in the rest of the chapter

paul will show us that the kind of life

that we are saved to

is alongside other christians

so ephesians 4 16 shows us that

we can't walk in the good works

that god has for us apart from living

life with other members of the body of

christ and i really wish we had time to

go through the whole litter

because paul goes into great detail what

this life looks like

but for now we see that the life we're

saved to in christ

is the true way of being human

so instead of serving our

self-centeredness and thinking your life

for mine

we now think my life

for yours

something else that we see

about this kind of life that god saves

us to

is that it's a gift

we're saved by grace

verse 8

grace is a gift remember

the kind of life that god wants us to

live then

is a life where we see everything as a

gift

not oh i've worked so hard for this i

deserve this

not not i deserve more everything

everything is a gift

why verse 9. so no one can boast

being in christ means the end of

boasting

what's boasting

we might think boasting means showing

off

we might think it means like hey look at

my car that i just got oh look at the

shirt that i have we might think it's

it's showing off to other people but the

ancients they had a much deeper meaning

and they thought they would say

boasting is the art of

the act sorry the act of taking pride in

something

whatever we boast in is our source of

pride

so if you watch any movie where there's

a battle

there'll inevitably be a scene where the

two armies are about to face each other

right

and then in this scene you'll have one

of the main characters come on and give

a heroic speech

and they'll say something like oh we're

gonna

we're gonna kill them we're brave we

have better swords than they do we have

five thousand men they only have two

thousand raw let's go

so then so the main character comes on

gives the speech

and then they all charge into battle

what is they doing

they're giving themselves the confidence

to face something really hard

and that's what boasting is

why would paul say

that the great thing about the christian

life

is the end of boasting

i think the reason he says that is

because

everyone boasts in something

we all boast in something

life outside of jesus christ

is that everybody is looking for

something that gives them a sense of

value

of strength

of something that gives us confidence to

face life

and paul says all of us are doing that

some of us might be looking to our

financial success

others of us might be looking to our

grades

our career our relationships our

physical appearance

we're all looking to something and we're

saying no matter what happens in life i

can face life because i have this thing

and it's exhausting

think about this if we look to our work

as a way to feel secure

that means we can never rest

means we're going to be workaholics we

can't can't put the computer away if we

look to our physical appearance

that's exhausting too right it means we

can't relax

if we're people pleasers then

it means that we can never say no

and we're always trying to please other

people so that we feel okay

if we're looking to our relationships

if there's a particular person in our

life and we're looking to them

to be the

source of confidence

that means we're always living in

anxiety and fear

trying to do our best

to make sure that they don't leave us

it's exhausting

imagine a life

without boasting

what would a grace-based life in jesus

christ look like

well it would look like contentment

if we believe that everything we have is

a gift

more than we deserve

this means that regardless of how bad

things get

we'll be able to say lord

i trust you

you know what's best i know everything

that you've given me as a gift

and i trust you

and we're content

but if we're looking for something to

boast in

deep down inside and we work

really hard and life doesn't go the way

we want we get really really angry

we're always angry because

we believe that we deserve so much and

we've worked so hard and we don't get it

one of the things is life in jesus

christ looks like contentment

but here's the other thing

when things do go well in a life of

boasting if we've worked really hard and

we're successful and we get it and

that's our identity when things do go

well

we look down on other people

so a life of boasting a life apart from

jesus christ

means we look down on other people

here's an example

fat shaming that's a horrible thing

right we should we should definitely not

it's an act of bullying it's drawing

attention to someone overweight

usually under the disguise of being

helpful some of us in school might have

even experienced this

but have you ever noticed that the

people doing the fat shaming

are usually not overweight themselves

they usually

have pretty good physiques they're

usually in shape why

because you have to be proud that you've

kept your weight down you have to be

proud that you've worked so hard to be

fit but look at that fat person over

there

that's that's boasting

it's looking down on other people

a life of boasting is

a miserable life

but a life in christ

if we knew we were saved by grace we

would accept other people because we

know that we're all equal

if we knew we were saved by grace we'd

also be able to forgive other people as

well if we knew we were saved by grace

we wouldn't be so concerned with our

image or how much respect we deserve we

would be able to laugh at ourselves we'd

be able to relax

if we knew we were saved by grace

we wouldn't need to boast in anything

we'd have confidence in jesus christ

we'd be content

and this is the kind of life

that god saves us to

and so the question is

how do we get this life how do we go

from verses 1 to 3

trapped enslaved

to here to this life

and paul tells us right in the middle

he tells us in verse 4 that

because of his great love for us god who

is rich in mercy

made us alive with christ

even when we were dead in transgressions

it is by grace you have been saved

in other words

god took us at the very point where we

were dead

and made us alive together with king

jesus

god didn't wait for us to want him

he took us at the very point of our

death

and made us alive in jesus we know that

jesus died and rose again and now he's

seated at the right hand of god and

everybody who read this

read paul's letter they understood what

that meant

to be seated at god's right hand means

the greatest honor possible the greatest

place of honor possible

the most honorable seat in the universe

belongs to jesus he's seats at god's

right hand

but paul here says that's true of us too

and he says we're seated there already

in christ

what does that mean

we're not physically there right now

we haven't physically resurrected

so it must not mean that we're literally

there because we're here we're on the

29th floor ps tower

so it's not literal

but if it's not literal it must mean

that we are legally

seated there

that we've been made alive with christ

and that when we believe in jesus and we

give ourselves to him all of our sins

are covered and we're treated as if

we've done everything that jesus has

done

and now god delights in you he honors

you he rejoices over you he accepts you

he loves you just as the same way that

he loves his own son jesus

how

well verse 7 tells us of god tells of

god's kindness to us in christ jesus

and so the question is what does christ

jesus do

another thing here is this word kindness

in english

we might think it means good intentions

doing a kind act that doesn't convey the

power of the word in greek the power of

the word in greek

refers to the act of doing something the

act of putting your life on the line the

act of doing what you say keeping your

word

and what did jesus christ do

well here's here's where we

put everything together

that verses one to three is the life

we were saved from

and in verses 1 and 3 is about

then it's humanity putting ourselves

only where god deserves to be

at the center of our lives

so john stott

in his book the cross of christ he puts

it really really simply

he says sin is humanity putting

ourselves where only god deserves to be

putting

ourselves in the center of our lives

then what's salvation

salvation is god putting himself where

humanity deserves to be where we deserve

to be

on the cross

jesus christ went to the cross and

because jesus christ took what we

deserved experiencing the agony of being

cut off from god

because of what jesus has done

we can now be seated with him in the

most honorable seat in the whole world

the whole universe

and this is what

will change our lives this is what will

melt us in our self-centeredness

grace

the grace of god

think about this

god's grace paul tells us

is a power that gives life to the dead

we were once dead we're powerless to do

anything about it and god made us alive

with him how powerful must grace be if

it makes people if it makes dead people

alive

we have the power to do a lot of things

humanity we have medicine

we have technology we can prolong and

extend years

of life

but we

we even we can't bring the dead back to

have you ever thought about grace as a

kind of power

the power to bring dead people to life

is this power active in our lives right

and if it isn't the reason our lives

aren't being changed is because we don't

see very much need for god's grace

we think we can get along fine without

him

we don't know that we need

rescue from disaster

but if we see it like paul tells us in

verses 1 3 that we're helpless and

powerless to do anything about our

that we're dead in it

well grace is a power that can bring the

dead to life

do you want to be transformed out of

look to jesus he saved us in the most

selfless way possible

philippians 2 tells us that jesus christ

was the only one the only one in the

whole world who had any reason to boast

but it says jesus christ though he was

equal with god

made himself nothing

taking on the form of a servant why for

us

for us and when we see him doing that

that will melt us and cause us to

realize that i don't need to be

self-centered i don't need to focus on

myself anymore i have everything i want

in christ i'm seated at god's right hand

i have all the honor that i could ever

want

grace changes lives grace puts an end to

every kind of boasting

grace actually brings about the only

boasting that brings joy

because in galatians

6 14 paul says

may i never boast

except in the cross of our lord jesus

christ through which the world has been

crucified to me and i to the world

grace transforms lives grace is the end

of boasting grace is the end of

comparison grace is the end of suspicion

when we live by grace we can actually

rest

it changes our lives and one of the best

examples of this

is in victor hugo's les miserables

so main character

his name is jean valjean

he's put into prison as a young man

and he suffers unjustly becomes hardened

he's in prison for 19 years

and when he gets out he becomes a real

villain

because he's been abused by the system

so he decides all right if the system is

going to abuse me i'ma get them back

so he comes out he becomes a real

but there is one point where he meets a

bishop

the bishop welcomes him into his own

house

shows him warmth

treats him with respect

shows him hospitality treats him with

dignity the first

shred of dignity that he's been treated

with in 19 years

but when the bishop goes to bed

jean valjean he robs the bishop

of his only wealth and then he runs

but then he gets caught

and the police bring him back to the

bishop they say oh we've caught a thief

the bishop looks at him

and he says no no he's not a thief i

gave him the silverware and actually

here you forgot the candlesticks he

walks over gives him the candlesticks

and the police leave

they're like oh i swear that he was a

thief and bishop is like no no he's not

safe he's with me

suddenly police leave

and then the bishop turns to jean

valjean he says

my brother you no longer belong to evil

but to good

it is your soul i buy from you i

withdraw it from black thoughts and the

spirit of perdition

and i give it to god

so he says this and valjean is stunned

he's in shock

why

why is he in shock

because the bishops act of mercy

and grace towards him

the bishop's costly grace

completely changes jean valjean's life

a spoiler alert he goes on and he

becomes an honest and trustworthy

businessman he starts treating his

employees with kindness and respect he

becomes so well known as a righteous man

that he's elected mayor

and he even saves the life of a man who

tries to kill him so throughout the

story he's being hunted down they get to

a point where he has the option of

killing him or saving his life and he

chooses to save his life

man who tries to kill him what happened

to jean valjean

an incredible transformation

occurs in his life

because he experienced grace

19 years

of being in prison 19 years of

having forced labor being punished

subjected to hard labor all because he

stole some bread 19 years of punishment

couldn't change his heart

but one morning an evening of true grace

melted his heart

and that's just a shadow of the

transformation that happens in our lives

when we

understand the grace of god

look to jesus

look at what he's done for us look at

what he did and that will melt us from

our self-centeredness towards living in

true freedom let's pray

lord jesus we thank you

lord so much for

lord for who you are

lord would you help us to grasp

the honor that we have been given

through you lord if any of us are

looking to other things to feel

validated and secure i pray lord that

that you would give us

or just

increase knowledge of your grace and

understanding experience of your grace

so that we would be melted and our eyes

would turn to you learned that we would

have the power to

to live lord as you would have us live

jesus name
