as a dentist he said earlier I'm

going to be preaching in English this

time so if anyone would like translation

or if there's some all right let's get

into it hello everybody I hope your

weeks have been well uh it's hard to

believe we're in November already

seems like I'm just flying by

uh this means that we're getting closer

to Christmas and New Years which is a

time of Celebration and food and family

get-togethers and parties lots and lots

of parties as we turn to Daniel 5 today

we're going to be looking at a party man

a huge magnificent party of over a

thousand people now what does a party

have anything to teach us about God

actually that's great oh Jesus we thank

you uh for your presence here with us

like we pray that your Holy Spirit

through your Holy Spirit

our hearts Open the Eyes of our hearts

help us to comprehend your awareness for

us today news

So Daniel 5

I'll read to us one to nine and then

we'll skip ahead to 17.

so King King belshazzar David banquet

for a thousand of his Nobles and drank

wine with them well belshazzar was

drinking his wine he gave orders to

bring in the gold and silver goblins

that nebuchadnezzari his father had

taken from the Temple of Jerusalem so

that the king and his Nobles his wives

and his concubines my dream from them so

they brought in the gold goblets that

had been taken from the temple of God in

Jerusalem and the king in his Nobles his

wives and his concubines drink from them

and as they drank the wine they praised

the gods of gold and silver a bronze

iron wood and Stone

suddenly the fingers of a human hand

appeared and wrote on the plaster of the

wall near the lamb stand in the Royal

House

the king washed the hand as it broke his

face turned pale and he was so

frightened that his legs became weak and

his knees were nothing

the king summoned the enchanters the

astrologers diviners then he said to

these wise men of Babylon whoever reads

this writing and tells me what it means

will be closed in purple and have a gold

chain placed around his head he will be

made the third highest ruler in the

Kingdom

then all the king's wise men but they

could not read the writing or tell the

king what it meant

the king belshazzar became even more

terrified his face grew more pale his

nobles were baffled

so then what happens next is the queen

reminds belshazzarov a man of the

Kingdom who is a lot older now than

before Daniel the queen tells melchizar

to call for Daniel because he can

interpret the writing so Daniel comes in

and he comes before belshazzar and he

says verse 17 you may keep your gifts

for yourself and give your rewards to

someone else nevertheless I will read

the writing for the king and tell him

what it means your majesty the most high

God gave your father Nebuchadnezzar

sovereignty and greatness and glory and

Splendor because of the high position he

gave him all all the nations and peoples

of every language dreaded and Purity

those who came wanted to put to death

and put the deaths those who wanted to

spare he spared those he wanted to

promote and promoted and those who

wanted to Humble be humbled but when his

heart became arrogant and pardon the

cried he was deposed from his Royal

thrawn stripped of his glory he was

driven away from people and given the

mind of an animal he lived with the wild

donkeys ate grass like the ox and his

body was drenched with the Dew of Heaven

until he acknowledged that the most high

God is sovereign

but you belshazzar his son has not

humbled yourself though you knew all

this instead you have set yourself up

against the law of Heaven you had the

goblets from his Temple brought to you

and you to you and you and your Nobles

your wives and your concubines drank

wine from them

a bronze iron wood and stone which

cannot see or hear or understand but he

will not honor The God Who holds in his

hands your life in all your ways

therefore he sent the hand that wrote

the inscription this is the inscription

that was written

person here is what these words mean the

days of your ring and brought it to an

end Tango do you have been weighed on

the scales and found one in Paris your

kingdom is divided and given to the

remains and the Persians

then it does start command Daniel was

called the purple the gold chain was

placed around his neck he was proclaimed

the third highest ruler in the Kingdom

not very nice belshazzar King of the

Babylonians were slim and there he has

the big took over the Kingdom at the age

of 62.

this is the word of God

so if we were to summarize

one of the main themes of the Book of

Daniel it would be in that God is King

he is Sovereign over every Dominion

every ruler every Kingdom throughout

history including our own personal

kingdoms as well

in every chapter has told us this each

with its own unique point

so in chapters one and two we saw God's

sovereignty and wisdom over

Nebuchadnezzar's Kingdom he is the one

who gave Nebuchadnezzar one of the most

powerful empires in history

chapter 3 we saw God's sovereignty in

his ability to save those who are

faithful to God

in chapter 4 we saw God's sovereignty

and humbling those who are proud

and now as we get to chapter five we

learn about God's sovereignty in a new

way and we learn about the proper

response to God's sovereignty and we do

so through three images One the party

two the prophet and three of the writing

so verse one we see that King belshazzar

throws a magnificent party it's not a

normal banquet it's especially

extravagant he has a thousand of his

Nobles he has his wives his concubines

and a lot of wine

so there's there's pleasure there's a

woman there's alcohol and then in verses

three and four we read so they brought

in the gold goblets that had been taken

from the temple of God in Jerusalem and

the king in his Nobles his wives and his

concubine strength from them as they

drank the wine they praised the gods of

gold and silver of bronze iron wood and

Stone

so the question is what's going on who

is belshazzar and why is he throwing

this extravagant party

so between chapter 4 and chapter five at

least 20 if not 30 years has passed by

uh Nebuchadnezzar has died and there

have been three kings who have reigned

during this time the current King right

now during this time his name is

nebonitis and so for most of his red

nebonitis goes off into another city and

entrusts the kingdom to his son

and so we have to remember when the

Bible calls someone their father it

doesn't necessarily mean biological

father it means predecessor so that's

why uh belshazzar is referred to as

Nebuchadnezzar's son

so during this time Babylon is in crisis

the Persian army led by a man named

Cyrus is on its way to Babylon

and a little bit before these events in

chapter 5 Cyrus defeats nebonitis and

the Babylonian Army in a battle

and so right now Babylon is defenseless

and the city is about to fall

and this is all information

of Daniel because Daniel's audiences

expected to know all this already

remember when we read the Bible it's

important to take it into account the

context and so the Persians are on his

doorstep in a few days the city is going

to be taken down and belshazzari decides

to throw a party

and not just any party a wild party

with women with wine with the gold and

silver goblets taken from the temple in

Jerusalem when Babylon conquered Israel

and while they do this it says they

praise the gods of gold and silver of

bronze iron wood and Stone

this also was not normal one commentator

says normally Babylonians avoided

offending foreign gods and what

belshazzar does is extremely offensive

he takes the sacred goblets that belong

to God and he drinks from them

so through through belshazzar's actions

he's showing everyone that belongs to

greatness that Babylon is superior

through his actions he's saying we are

greater than anything or anyone and we

are so much greater than the god of

Israel that we're going to drink from

his goblets and toast struggle and gods

with his goblets and he can't do

anything about it it's immense Pride

so the question is why does all this

happen why does he decide to throw this

party right now

remember the Persian army is on his

doorstep there is a sense of fear around

the city what would happen when the

Persians got here

would they kill everyone and take

Babylon would they kill only the

officials and let the people live

would Babylon become a vassal state

the feeling throughout the city was fear

they wouldn't know what would happen in

a few days

and so some commentators have speculated

belshazzar's throwing his party to show

the people that he's still in control he

wants to boost the confidence of

citizens

others say that by drinking from the

goblets of the god of Israel and

toasting his own Gods balcazar wants to

show his people that the Babylonian Gods

can defend them he wants to show that

his people that belshazzar is capable of

protecting them

others say that he's living in denial

he's saying no everything's fine I've

always lived like a king and no Army no

God is going to stop me

and while these are all these are all

true they're not mutually exclusive and

we'll see these things as the story

unfolds one point that we see here is

that The Closer death gets the more

emphasis that we place on Pleasure on

wealth and on religion

so one of the main fears of humanity is

the fear of death and death is one thing

that is certain for all of us a quote

that's often been attributed to Buddha

is that we begin to die from the moment

we are born where birth is the cause of

death

death is inevitable

it'll happen to

everyone of us in this room not only

that scientists say that in 5 billion

years the sun will engulf the Earth in a

fiery death

and millions of years after that the

entire universe will one day be nothing

nothing but a litter of dead cold Stars

traveling forever to the dark recesses

of cold dark lifeless space

so it's pretty bleed right here William

Elaine Craig a philosopher he says if

we're all doomed to die then nothing

really matters no one's life has any

ultimate significance all of our

advancements with human knowledge to

alleviate human suffering to live in

peace that that's all meaningless

and because Humanity ends in nothing we

are nothing

do you hear what he's saying he's saying

if we're all doomed to die if death is

all there is life is meaningless

and this is the this is the modern

mindset because there is no God

because this is the final ending nothing

matters but we can't live like that and

so we give our life meaning we create

meaning for ourselves

and this is part of what we see in this

party

we see in the shadow of death with the

medo-persian Army on their doorstep

belshazzar and his Nobles throw a grand

party and they turn to three things to

cope with death the same three things

that many many of us today turn to as

well

first they turn to pleasure and romance

we see that with the wives and the

concubines

we see that today as well we look to the

idea of relationships our significant

other to complete us

just take a look at songs today either

in Thai English they're full of themes

about love about worth significance

dreaming about how good life is with a

love partner or how breaking up is the

end of the world

so one way to try to find meaning is

through finding someone who loves us

it's it's as if salvation comes through

the other person

but this doesn't work because how can

any human being live up to the

expectation of being everything to

someone else

there's no human being that can meet all

of our needs but yet you still try and

it doesn't work

second approach to try and find meaning

is through achievement

and we see that when belshazzar brings

out the gold and silver goblets as a way

of boasting and what he has achieved and

conquered he's saying look at how

powerful I am look at what I've achieved

who can stop me I have everything not

even God can stop me

and we do the same thing today we think

I have to make elastic impact

I'm going to work really hard become

better and more successful than anyone

else so that I feel like I'm someone

but this doesn't work either because if

humanity is going to end in nothing

ultimately one's achievements don't

matter either

he's boasting and what he's conquered

But ultimately it's not going to matter

final thing that we see that belches are

in the Nobles turned to is religion

praising the Gods in order to deal with

death and significance we also turn to

religion

many people will go to a temple in

tambun so that they can say I'm a good

person I will be okay I will last

plenty of people make agreements or

deals with gods and say things like if

you give me this I promise to do this if

my son or daughter gets into this school

I'll go to the temple and make Mary I

promise to do what you want if you give

me this one thing

but that doesn't work either because

there's always a sense of being unsure

how much is enough

and in all these cases what we're

ultimately doing is making something

else out to be done other than God

himself

in these cases we're either making

achievement our god making someone else

our God or ourselves our God we're

giving something else for Glory that

only God deserves and ultimately comes

from placing oneself in the center it

comes from Pride how's that

let's see what happens next

so all of a sudden the party in the

middle of this party the fingers of a

human hand appear

start writing on the wall

Industries are as terrified the alcohol

leaves his body as his face turns pale

and he's so frightened he can barely

stand

one commentator says on that day all

sorts of horrifying thoughts must have

raced through the wicked King's brain

foremost of which was I have offended

God today I died

and then what happens next is the

pattern throughout the Book of Daniel

something confusing happens all the

world's experts are brought in the

astrologers the enchanters the diviners

the world's wisdom is brought in and

they can't figure it out

none of the King's Men or the wisdom of

the world could read the writing

they were stuck

but then the queen reminds belshazzar of

a woman of a man who is now much older a

man who is the spirit of the Holy gods

of goodness so they call in Daniel and

the King promises Daniel that if he can

read the writing he'll be made third

highest in the Kingdom

remember this is our second his father

is first so the third highest is the

most that he can give to Daniel

so he promised this to Daniel what does

Daniel say

verse 17 you may keep your gifts for

yourself and give your rewards to

why does he do this

he's not just being humble he's not just

like oh no I can't take it Daniel here

acts out something that he says in the

rest of the book

that Daniel himself does not have any

special wisdom compared to the experts

rather the reason Daniel can read the

writing is not because of his wisdom

it's not because of his research but

it's because God's revealed it to him

it's God's wisdom it's revealed to him

from God it's God's word

and this

shows us many things one thing it shows

us is that if we want to get anywhere at

all we have to start with God's word we

need to trust God's word

not just the parts that we agree with if

we only believe the parts of God's word

that we like and we agree with God Isn't

Our God

we are

how would we know if we have a real

living God and not just denial

we're able to make God into what we want

by saying yes I'll believe this about

God I like this but oh I don't like this

so I'm not going to believe that or I

don't like this I won't do this or that

can't be what God says is that not just

making God into an idol is that not just

us doing what we want at the end of the

day

so this is how we know that the God we

worship and serve is not just in our

imagination

when we see God's opinion

and we don't agree with it but we still

trust and submit ourselves to God's word

when we do this we place God in the

center

and when we don't when we only choose to

obey the parts of scripture that we like

or agree with

we're placing ourselves in the center

and here we get to the heart of the

issue in Daniel 5.

subscribe this is the whole problem this

is the main issue here is pride

so verses 18 and 21 Daniel recounts to

belshazzard his father

Nebuchadnezzar's issue that he was

prideful and arrogant

and then in verse 22 this is this is the

heart of this chapter

Daniel tells belshazzar you have not

humbled yourself although you knew all

of this this is the difference between

five and four and four

Nebuchadnezzar is humbled like a John

trade showed us last week in five it's a

little different because belshazzar

knows he's seen what happens to

Nebuchadnezzar he knows all this

but he still hasn't humbled himself

this is the heart of the story you have

not humbled yourself although you give

all this

it's Pride question is what is this

Pride so we looked at some of this last

week with Trey with John Trey after

Nebuchadnezzar gets humbled in Daniel

chapter 4 he says in verse 17 now I

Nebuchadnezzar praise and exalt and

glorify the king of Heaven because

everything he does is right and all his

ways are just and those who walk in

Pride he's able to Humble

and then in verse 21 by 21

Daniel recounts this he says

Nebuchadnezzar lived with the wild

donkeys and ate grass like the ox and

his body was drenched with the Dew of

Heaven until he acknowledged that the

most high God is Sovereign over all

kingdoms on Earth and sets over them

anyone he wishes

so this is what pride is pride is

refusing to see that absolutely

everything that we have and that we are

as a gift of Grace

have pride because they think what they

have is something they've earned they

don't realize it's a gift from God

everything we have is a gift it's a gift

of Grace whether we're the CEO of a

company whether we live in a nice condo

if our marriage is thriving or we own a

nice car or that our kids go in the

expense of school or we we even have

friends or people who like us everything

that we think we have everything we

think we've accomplished is a sheer gift

of Grace from God

and and what's more

remember how we talked about meaning and

significance and the first point

the reason Nebuchadnezzar the reason

belshas are struggled with

insignificance dreaming that there was

always going to be someone to come and

take the kingdom away was precisely

because they felt that they had earned

the place that they were at

because he felt that everything he had

earned was his accomplishment

it led him to insecurity let him dead

significance because he didn't realize

he didn't

believe that God had sent him over it

how much pressure does it place on us

when we think what we have is all

because of our hard work

will always be insecure and Restless

Never Satisfied never content try and

approve ourselves trying to make sure

that we keep moving forward always in

fear that what we have will be taken

away

and also will always be filled with a

sense of insignificance but when we

acknowledge that

everything we have is a sheer gift of

Grace from God it's immensely free

the root of insignificance is pride the

root of inferiority is pride because

it's self-absorbed always concerned with

how do I go pride is also the root of

superiority pride is the root of all

worry because worry is saying I know

better than God how my life should go

God gives us all things God gave

Nebuchadnezzar the kingdom

Nebuchadnezzar gave it to melshazar but

yet Mel Cesar is acting as if he's

earned it all by himself

that's Pride that destroys us that will

destroy him the way to gain significance

the way to gain true and Lasting peace

is not through Pride not through taking

credit for what God's given us but

acknowledging that everything we have

every single thing that we have

is a gift from God

this frees us up to be generous with our

possessions and our time

this brings us up

to not take ourselves as seriously this

frees us up to finally relax

God's in control

we aren't the center of the universe

we can step down from that place and

instead of asking how can I get God to

do what I want

we can look at things rightly and say

how can I join god with what God's

already doing

so on Races 22-23 Daniel is saying

belshazzar even though you knew all this

even though you saw what happened to

Nebuchadnezzar how God humbled him even

though you knew all this you have not

humbled yourself

instead you set yourself up against God

you praise your gods of silver and gold

but you did not honor The God Who holds

him in his hand your life in all your

ways

belshazzar the finals God's vessels

the godlets of the Temple

one commentator

writes it's always upsetting to see what

poor substitutes Humanity exchanges the

Living God for

instead of defiling God's gifts instead

of praising the gifts themselves that

God's given

when we allow God's gifts to point us to

The Giver himself to point us to God

sets himself up

on the same level as God

and so what does God do

God humbles belshazzar

very consistent with what Jesus says he

says whoever exalts themselves will be

humble and then those who humble

themselves will be exalted

the question is how does God humble

belshazzar

and this is now this is where we now

look at the writing on the wall

so

what is the writing on the wall

Daniel reads it and says

he says God is numbered the days of your

Reign and brought it to an end you have

been waited on the scales and found one

thing your kingdom is divided and given

to the means and Persians in other words

what God does hear through the writing

on the wall

is he sure as Mel Cesar who is really on

the throne

God shows gulshazzar and us that God is

the true king

and that he is Sovereign over every

Dominion

including our own

so at this point in history God gives

gosh is our revelation of his kingdom

he says your kingdom is coming to an end

at this point in history God reveals to

belshazzar who is really King

there's also another point in history

where God reveals himself to be king and

full

so we see an X chapter 2 verse 31 Peter

given a speech he says seeing what was

to come he spoke of the resurrection of

the Messiah that he was not abandoned to

the realm of the dead nor did his body

see the king

God raised God has raised this Jesus to

life and we are all witnesses to it

exalted to the right hand of God he is

received from the father and the

promised Holy Spirit and is poured out

what you now see and hear therefore

let all Israel be assured of this God

has made this Jesus whom you crucified

both Lord

and Messiah

so at that point in history the way God

revealed his kingdom to belshazzar

through the writing on the wall at this

point in history and acts

the way God reveals himself

to the world is through the resurrection

of Jesus Christ the resurrection of

Jesus Christ is the ultimate revelation

of God's Kingdom

the resurrection of Jesus Christ is not

any old Miracle it's not just a trick

it's an invasion it's an invasion of

Heaven to Earth

do you know what this means

this means that through the resurrection

of Jesus Christ the evil Powers the evil

kingdoms of this world are slowly being

torn down

suffering hopelessness evil Injustice

sin sickness death despair all these

things are coming to an end

they have an expiration date

the resurrection means that even in the

darkest times of Life there is a bright

shining Ray of Hope that can never be

quenched because of the resurrection of

Jesus Christ there is not one single

area of Our Lives personally or our

society the world our city there is not

one single area that is hopeless

because of the Resurrection we have hope

for the future that one day everything

will be made right

but not only this

the resurrection of Jesus Christ means

that our hope is from the future as well

when Jesus rose

he brought the future kingdom of God

into the present and so that means not

only do we have hope we have certainty

it will happen and it's happening

already the power by which God will

destroy all suffering evil deformity

disease and death has broken into

history

and when we believe in the Risen Jesus

by faith the very spirit of God

the very power that will one day remake

the universe comes into us

the resurrection of Jesus Christ is good

news for the world

Earl Ellis a Biblical scholar he says

the lordship the Satan and of death

yields to the in-breaking powers of the

new age

yet even as belshazzar's guests continue

to feast

unaware that his kingdom had fallen and

his Doom had been sealed so the present

age is unaware that Satan's Reign has

been broken

and cannot read what is written for the

mission of the church to make the

kingdom visible through feeding the

hungry

through changed lives the preaching of

Grace is now the writing on the wall

the kingdom of God has been brought in

with Jesus and we the church are the

writing on the wall

we have a mission Jesus has created a

community in which people's lives are

being changed a community in which we

are loving each other loving the world

changing lives through Jesus's word this

is how the world knows and sees that the

kingdom of this world is coming down is

through the church through Jesus's

people through you through me through

all of us here it's a message at hope

it's a messenger life

and what this means is are we living

like how God intends us to live

are we a sign of the coming Kingdom

Jesus has given us significance he's

given us his holy spirit

we have the power to live as a sign of

the kingdom of God do other people see

that

are we different

remember who our King is he is the one

who gave up of his glory

he's the king but he emptied himself and

became a servant

he was made insignificant God turned

away from him and he was nailed to a

cross

why

so that when we received Jesus by faith

we can be filled with significance with

meaning with glory god now loves us the

Holy Spirit lives inside of us and as a

result there is something that we have

joy peace hope the gospel

something that we have that we are

charged to share

friends can the world see through us

that Jesus kingdom is coming

are we living as if Jesus Christ is our

King

is he is he your king

would the whole world know let's pray

pardon me

as Praise You Lord as you are King

I want a profound

truth that is that we can step down from

our throats right in battle before the

ultimate throne

but we thank you that we have hope we

have certainty

I would remind us this day now that

we are filled with your experience one

the very same spirit that

raised Jesus from the Great

but we're filled with that or would you

help us but to join in

with your mission we thank you that you

love us we thank you that you'll never

give up on us Lord we thank you that you

would use people like us Lord to

bring your kingdom Jesus

","":
Grace
