by

the Supreme Glory of Christ help us to

seek and to find our contentment and him

alone we pray all this in Jesus name

if you have your Bibles you can turn

with me to Philippians 4 verses 8

through 13.

Paul wrote the book of Philippians while

he was in prison a majority of this

letter focuses on encouraging the church

at Philippi to pursue spiritual maturity

and to show them example of what this

looks like

the church that Philip I heard of a need

that Paul had so they sent him a gift

and so part of Paul's letter is thanking

them for sending this gift and so we'll

look at that thank you note today and

we'll see what it teaches us about

Christian contentment

so let's look at God's word together

finally Brothers whatever is true

whatever is Honorable whatever is just

whatever is pure whatever is lovely

whatever is commendable if there is any

Excellence if there is anything worthy

of Praise think about these things

what you have learned and received and

heard and seen in me practice these

things and the God of Peace will be with

you

are rejoiced in the Lord greatly that

now at length you have revived your

concern for me you were indeed concerned

for me but you all had no opportunity

not that I am speaking of being in Need

for I have learned in whatever situation

I am to be content I know how to be

brought low and I know how to abound in

any and every circumstance I have

learned the secret of facing plenty and

hunger abundance and need I can do all

things through him who strengthens me

up here

you can't hear

I can preach in Thailand English if need

be so no I'm joking I can't

is it good okay it's good all right

was a 17 year old boy who lived in

Northern Thailand he loved to play video

games like a lot of young teenagers do

sometimes after playing all night he

would even play in the morning so he

would play through the night he would

close the windows in his room so there

would be no glare so that he could see

his computer screen and so he would

continue to play through the night and

into the afternoon

in November of 2019 his father found him

slumped over his computer one morning

he had once again stayed up all night

playing video games

and the doctors who did his autopsy said

that it was probably a stroke he

probably didn't drink enough water he

had sat for so long it's probably a

blood clot that had traveled to his

brain and that was the reason why he had

died

so what was driving this young man to

live this type of Lifestyle

he thought these video games would

provide the contentment that his heart

desired

that his heart craved and just like dear

what we all seek contentment

we are all looking for something to

satisfy the desires of our hearts and so

let's look at what Paul has to say about

contentment and where we should find it

Paul Stark says thank you note by saying

that I Rejoice greatly in the Lord that

concern for me and so Paul has great joy

because the Philippians are so concerned

about him that they send him a gift

and he then clarifies this joy and lets

the Philippians know that his Joy is not

in the gift itself

in verse 11 Paul says not that I am

speaking of being in need

and so Paul is saying I didn't receive

this gift in a state of poverty or want

for the gift

he didn't want the Philippians to think

that the gift would somehow fulfill this

void or lack of something that Paul had

in his heart

something that Paul needed to to be

fulfilled by

Paul then gives an explanation for this

in the rest of verse 11. he says for I

have learned in whatever situation I am

to be content I know how to be brought

low and I know how to abound in any and

every circumstance I have learned the

secret of facing plenty and hunger

abundance and need

and so circumstances like getting a gift

didn't control Paul's contentment

why is this

Paul has learned how to be content when

having things and not having things he

has learned a secret

so what is the secret of contentment

that Paul has learned what is this

what is his contentment based on if it's

not based on circumstances if it's not

based on things

when we search the book of Philippians

for what Paul has learned that points to

the basis for Paul's contentment

I think there are two passages that

speak the clearest to this

the first one is Philippians 1 20-23

and it says as it is my eager

expectation and hope that I will not be

at all ashamed but that with full

courage now is always Christ will be

honored in my body whether by life or by

Death

for to me to live as Christ and to die

is gain

if I am to live in the flesh that means

fruitful labor for me yet which I shall

choose I cannot tell I am hard-pressed

between the two my desire is to depart

and be with Christ for that is far

better

and so can you see what Paul's treasure

is here can you see where his

contentment lies

he says for to me to live is Christ and

to die is gain

and so for Paul his whole reason for

living is Christ he lives to serve his

King because he adores Christ

he serves out of an overflow of joy in

Christ he wants to honor Christ through

a full life of service and make much of

his great savior

and so the only desire that is greater

for Paul than for living is living for

Christ is to die so that he can be with

Christ die is gained to him

and why is Diet gained to him because to

depart and be with Christ is better

it's kind of like the difference between

dating and marriage and dating you

experience The Fellowship of someone but

in marriage you experience that

Fellowship in a greater way in a fuller

way

so Paul's experiences fellowship with

Christ in the in the here and now but to

be with Christ to die and to be with

Christ he will experience the fellowship

with Christ in a fuller way to a greater

extent

I love this quote from John Piper on

this verse whenever he's talking about

how dying is gay and he says all of the

things that we will get in heaven like a

new body streets of gold rest and

mansions are great things but the

greatest part of all of these is that we

will that they will allow us to be with

Christ

and so there is nothing

in Paul's mind that is greater than

Christ when we are in heaven we will get

to be with the most glorious being and

experience his presence in a way that is

far better than what we experience now

this will be gained for us and this was

gained for Paul

the second place the second passage that

speaks to the secret that Paul has

learned is found in Philippians 3 verses

7 through 8.

it says but whatever gain I had I

counted as loss for the sake of Christ

indeed I count everything is lost

because of surpassing worth of knowing

Christ Jesus my Lord

for his sake I have suffered the loss of

all things and count them as rubbish in

order that I might gain Christ

and so what is Paul doing here he is

using accounting language and he is

acting like an appraiser who would

evaluate something and assign value to

something

when he says whatever gain I had he was

talking about the things that he could

boast and that he had accomplished as

this great religious leader this

Pharisee

he had been obedient to the law he was

from a certain tribe of Israel

and he was very zealous and so he's

comparing this to knowing Christ

and so these are the things that Paul

could easily make Treasures in his life

what does he say about them

he says I count all of these things as

loss

and then he says that he counts not only

these things as laws but I count

everything as loss because of the

surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus

my Lord

in the worth of knowing Christ and being

in relationship with him surpasses

everything in Paul's mind

so there's nothing that exists or ever

will exist that is greater than Christ

is is infinite and therefore his worth

is infinite it surpasses the worth of

all things

and so Christ is such a worthy treasure

to Paul that he would give up all things

and he pretty much has given up all

things for Christ I mean he is in a

prison cell as he is riding this letter

and so we see that Christ is Paul's

treasure

and do you see the affections of Paul's

heart

God has drawn the desires of his heart

away from the things of the world and

God has drawn them to Christ

so what is the secret to contentment

that Paul has found

again John Piper does such a great job

of summing up this secret he says the

secret that Paul has learned is seeing

and savoring and treasuring enjoying and

being satisfied in Christ himself

as supremely valuable

great and all satisfying come into a

position where in your soul the world

has lost its power to addict you to its

Pleasures because Christ is Superior in

value as a satisfaction as an enjoyment

as a taste

and so the secret that Paul has learned

is to make Christ his treasure and to

view everything else in comparison to

him is rubbish

and there's nothing that compares can

compare to the worth of knowing Christ

so Paul's contentment it comes from

treasuring Christ above all things this

is the secret

that he has learned

and so the question that we must ask

ourselves is do we realize the worth of

knowing Christ

we have a personal relationship the most

intelligent the most wealthy the most

influential the most just the most

humble person that ever was and that

will ever be

and so if we want to learn to be content

in this lifetime

then Christ must become our precious

treasure he must come more precious to

us than anything even those things that

we hold near and dear to our hearts

so if you were to weigh in value the joy

that you have in things in comparison to

the joy that you have in Christ

what would it look like

which way would the would the scales

move

so for me let's say a fire starts in my

closet while I'm in church and it burns

up all my clothes

well okay I'm okay with that I'm a

t-shirt and shorts type of guy and so if

those are gone I'm okay

and so my joy is still in Christ

but what if something happens to my bank

account say someone hacks into my bank

account and my bank account goes to zero

where is my contentment

if people find out a sin about me that

causes me to lose face before everyone

where is my joy where is my contentment

if I'm on the way home today and I get

in a car wreck and I lose one of my

family members

where is my ultimate Joy

so if I put my money if I put my image

my health my family my friends in the

scale

and put Christ in the other scale

war is my ultimate Joy which way does

the scale tip

so Paul he had learned to clean to

Christ as his Supreme treasure in

comparison to all things

have we learned this

our hearts affections are are our hearts

affections so tied to something that if

we lost it it would wreck our joy and

our contentment

or in the midst of pain in the midst of

sorrow in the midst of grief tough

circumstances would we have this great

joy in Christ that is unshakable

can you say with Paul in all

circumstances I am content

if I'm honest with you I can say that I

am not there yet but I desperately want

to be

I want to treasure Christ as Paul does

so that if I have plenty or if I'm in

need or if I abound or if I brought low

I have this great attempt this great joy

in Christ

I want to consider all things in

comparison to Christ as rubbish

so if we were not there yet how how do

we get there

the first thing we must realize is that

spiritual maturity that Paul is talking

about here that he is showing by example

here of being content it involves work

um and so it's a very risky thing to say

work in the pulpit in a Reformed Church

a church that has the name Grace City so

before you pull out the rocks in your

pockets to Stone me let's continue on

and look and see what work looks like

for Christian contentment Paul says he

learned the secret of contentment it

doesn't come naturally to sinful man

so we must be reprogrammed as Christians

or sinful ways of thinking or affections

the way we live they need to be

transformed

we are called to participate in this

transformation we are called to

continually work at finding contentment

and so what is the work of finding

contentment in Christ look like

in verse 4 8 Paul gives a list of

Virtues and tells us to think about

these things

so we must fill our minds with what is

good our minds need to be reprogrammed

to Value Christ as Supreme so that we

see him as worthy and our affections are

drawn to him for the only thing that

will provide contentment for us

what does the world say that we should

find contentment in if you look at

culture it teaches us that we should

find contentment in whatever is popular

so whatever is popular at the time if we

do that

culture teaches us often that it will

bring contentment

what does IKEA teach us about

contentment

have you ever thought about that

if you go to IKEA it teaches you that if

you have a room that is set up perfectly

with a little sofa that fits perfectly

in the corner and everything else then

it will bring you contentment just look

at the advertisements

what do advertisements about other

things teach us they teach us that

contentment is fleeting and so you need

to consume as much as you can to try to

keep up with contentment it's a fleeting

thing so you have to keep feeling

yourself with things to have contentment

what do Buddhists teach us about

contentment they some Buddhists teach

that it is bad to have desire

and that desires must be eliminated and

so the solution to contentment for some

Buddhists are to eliminate these desires

and to live a simple life to do away

with desires

and so our minds they must be

transformed from thinking the way the

world does about contentment we must

come to see Christ as our treasure and

find contentment in him alone

if we want Christ to be our treasure

then we must see him as Worthy

God has given us his word in which every

page of scripture points to Christ

and so if we want to see Christ as

worthy that we must fill our minds with

facts about him we must study who he is

and what he's done for us especially as

our Lord and savior

we meditate on God's word just not to

fill our minds with facts but with the

hope and the prayer and the expectation

that we will be changed that our hearts

will be changed and so we need to ask

God to change our hearts our desires as

we spend time in his word

uh one summer I took a job that required

me to work outside all day I

decided to stop drinking sugary drinks

because I knew that the work was going

to be taxing and I knew that these

sugary drinks weren't the best for me

for this physical work so I only drank

water for 18 weeks

and for the first two weeks

um those initial two weeks I really

craved soft drinks I'd get thirsty and I

said man I want a Coke or I want a

Sprite or a Mountain Dew some type of

soft drink

But after those initial two weeks I no

longer craved soft drinks the thought of

a soft drink was actually it didn't

sound appealing it sounded repulsive and

so my body started to Crave what was

best for it and what would satisfy it

the most

water was the only thing that sounded

refreshing to me in comparison to

everything else

and so what happened during this time

my appetite my trick and my Cravings

they were transformed so I didn't want

soft drinks anymore I wanted what would

satisfy me I wanted some water

and in the same way we want our

appetites to be transformed as we read

about Christ and as we discover about

his greatness Jesus is the Water of Life

and he is the only one that can truly

satisfy our deepest longings

Paul tells us that we not only need to

think about virtues like contentment we

need to to practice them

and so how how do you practice

contentment can you practice contentment

as we experience loss and abundance in

both of these circumstances we bring to

mind the worth of Christ

we reflect upon Christ and remind

ourselves that he is more valuable than

anything and he is ours

we must do this in all circumstances

Paul treasured Christ in both abundance

and also in need

so when you get that raise at work give

God praise for it but also remind

yourself that Jesus is greater than the

race

money is good but in comparison to

Christ it is rubbish

as you eat dinner tonight and taste

those pork ribs or fried rice or

whatever you have tonight remind

yourself that wow they are good know

that Christ is better

tomorrow whenever you don't have time to

eat

and you have some emergency come up so

that you miss lunch remind yourself that

Christ is the bread of life and he is

more satisfying to you than lunch

when you lose your job and experience

financial difficulties remind yourself

that Christ has given himself for you in

order for you to have blessings in him

he is better than anything that money

can buy

let's look lastly at our need to rely

upon the grace of God as we seek

contentment in Christ

Paul says I can do all things through

Christ who strengthens me

so what is Paul talking about here when

he says all things

he is talking about all the things that

are included in living a mature

Christian Life it includes all of the

virtues that Paul lists out in verses 8

through through 12.

and it also includes being content he

says that I can do all of these things

that I've just told you about that are

what a mature Christian does I can do

all of these things through Christ who

strengthens me

because Christ is strengthening him he

can do this he can be content whenever

he is brought low whenever he abounds

because Christ is right there

strengthening him

and so Paul talks about himself and he

says I am content so he is the one who

is doing the act or the work of being

content

but the only reason that he can be

content is because Jesus has given him

the ability to be content Jesus is

working in him so that he can be content

so as we strive for contentment let us

Rely Upon Jesus working in us so that we

can have contentment in him

we act or work for contentment by being

God dependent we put forth god-dependent

effort

so we need to look to God to give us the

ability to be content

so what we've seen in this passage is

that only Jesus can satisfy our hearts

if you want to be content in this

lifetime then pursue him

spend time in his word fill your mind

with the great things about him

taste and see that he is good

and look to him to strengthen you as you

seek to see and Savor him as Supreme

Above All Else

if you would like to continue studying

about or studying this verse and

studying about contentment how can I be

a Christian how can I be content in this

world I would encourage you to to look

at this series that John Piper has done

it's a six part video series it's on

YouTube and you can and search it just

type in Philippians 4 10 through 13. I

was very blessed as I was working on

this sermon and if you would like to

learn more about Christian contentment I

think you'll be blessed also

let's close our time in the word in

prayer

uh dear heavenly father we thank you so

much for your word we thank you what it

reveals to us how it encourages us to

the Lord how it strengthens us

we've seen this morning one of your

great servants Paul how he was a great

example of contentment and how you have

told us through him to have contentment

and so I just pray that you will

give us contentment in Christ I pray

that you will draw our affections away

from the things of this world to the

Lord

the things that you've given to us they

are good but in comparison to Christ

they are like rubbish and so I pray that

you will help us to get to a point like

Paul was dear Lord he says in all things

I consider the worth of of knowing

Christ as surpassing all things and so I

pray that you will get us to a point

like that

we can't do it in our flesh we need your

Holy Spirit and so we are dependent upon

you as we fill our minds with your word

as we look at who Christ is we need your

Holy Spirit to take that word to

reprogram our minds from the things that

the world has told us and to

help us to be content the final

contentment in Christ we pray that you

will do that for us

pray that you will bless the rest of our

time as we sing to you as we praise you

Jesus for the great things that you've

done and how great you are pray all this

in Jesus name amen

","":"
["GET
