I introduced myself earlier but I want<\/p>\n
to do that again if if you're visiting<\/p>\n
we just want to say welcome I'm one of<\/p>\n
the elders here at Grace City and if<\/p>\n
you're visiting for the first time<\/p>\n
tonight we just want to say welcome to<\/p>\n
you<\/p>\n

we look forward to speaking with you<\/p>\n

God<\/p>\n
we're continuing towards the end of the<\/p>\n
year right and we're in the season we're<\/p>\n
in the midst of Advent<\/p>\n
Ure<\/p>\n
obviously<\/p>\n
the word Advent means humming and it's<\/p>\n
the four week period that leads up to<\/p>\n
Christmas Day<\/p>\n
it's a time where we we look back we<\/p>\n
look back to when Jesus entered this<\/p>\n
world and we also look forward we look<\/p>\n
forward we look ahead to Jesus's Second<\/p>\n
Coming relax<\/p>\n
is a time of remembering it's a time of<\/p>\n
preparing for for anticipating the<\/p>\n
return of Jesus<\/p>\n
it's a time to reflect on the Promises<\/p>\n
of God and a time to long for the<\/p>\n
Fulfillment of those promises foreign<\/p>\n
in these weeks leading up to Advent<\/p>\n
we've looked at Jesus we've looked at<\/p>\n
Jesus as the promised Messiah we've<\/p>\n
looked at Jesus as the Incarnate Messiah<\/p>\n
we've looked at Jesus as the faithful<\/p>\n
Messiah<\/p>\n
um<\/p>\n
this past week as I was reading the news<\/p>\n
I was struck by one particular story<\/p>\n
it was announced that scientists working<\/p>\n
at the world's largest nuclear fusion<\/p>\n
facility in the United States have for<\/p>\n
the very first time achieved the<\/p>\n
phenomenon known as ignition<\/p>\n
what happened was what ignition is is<\/p>\n
that they created<\/p>\n
a nuclear<\/p>\n
reaction that generated more energy than<\/p>\n
it consumed<\/p>\n
okay<\/p>\n
Yeah so basically the reaction they<\/p>\n
achieved It produced a greater amount of<\/p>\n
energy than it took to actually start it<\/p>\n
to actually start the reaction<\/p>\n
that's just fascinating<\/p>\n
this breakthrough has enormous<\/p>\n
ramifications for creating clean energy<\/p>\n
well into the future<\/p>\n
so this is just it's amazing news for<\/p>\n
our world<\/p>\n
but as I listened to a government<\/p>\n
spokesperson sharing about this<\/p>\n
incredible news<\/p>\n
one of the first benefits mentioned<\/p>\n
was it's centered around the issue of<\/p>\n
National Security<\/p>\n
so essentially this technology<\/p>\n
could help maintain and improve nuclear<\/p>\n
weapons in the interest of military<\/p>\n
defense<\/p>\n
now there are so many layers right in<\/p>\n
the realm of global politics but suffice<\/p>\n
to say it was disheartening<\/p>\n
will be reminded of just how broken this<\/p>\n
world is<\/p>\n
wow you know here we have this<\/p>\n
incredible amazing scientific<\/p>\n
breakthrough that could really help so<\/p>\n
many people and likely will<\/p>\n
but it's also connected right it's<\/p>\n
related to concerns about security and<\/p>\n
we don't have to look very far to be<\/p>\n
reminded of the really hard and<\/p>\n
challenging things happening in our<\/p>\n
world right now<\/p>\n
there is war there is famine and other<\/p>\n
heartbreaking events taking place at<\/p>\n
this very moment<\/p>\n
we feel the weight of all of this<\/p>\n
we know things are amiss<\/p>\n
weary Hearts long for deliverance<\/p>\n
we long for all the wrongs to be made<\/p>\n
right<\/p>\n
we desire Justice in an unjust world<\/p>\n
the story of Christmas it speaks into<\/p>\n
this very state of despair<\/p>\n
and it does so because Jesus<\/p>\n
the Victorious Messiah offers us<\/p>\n
hopefully<\/p>\n
he offers us hope through<\/p>\n
his power over sin and death<\/p>\n
is<\/p>\n
our text this evening is Isaiah 52 and<\/p>\n
53 portions of both<\/p>\n
and I'll read to us in English and I<\/p>\n
mean<\/p>\n
this is the word of the Lord<\/p>\n
who has believed what he has heard from<\/p>\n
us<\/p>\n
and to whom has the arm of the Lord been<\/p>\n
revealed<\/p>\n
for he grew up before him like a young<\/p>\n
plant<\/p>\n
and like a root out of dry ground<\/p>\n
he had no form or Majesty that we should<\/p>\n
look at him<\/p>\n
and no beauty that we should desire him<\/p>\n
he was despised<\/p>\n
and rejected<\/p>\n
by men<\/p>\n
a Man of Sorrows<\/p>\n
and acquainted with grief<\/p>\n
and as one from whom men hide their<\/p>\n
faces he was despised<\/p>\n
and we esteemed him not<\/p>\n
surely he has borne our griefs<\/p>\n
and carried our sorrows<\/p>\n
yet we have steamed him stricken<\/p>\n
Smitten by God<\/p>\n
and afflicted<\/p>\n
but he was pierced for our<\/p>\n
transgressions he was crushed<\/p>\n
for our iniquities<\/p>\n
upon him was the chastisement that<\/p>\n
brought us peace<\/p>\n
and with his wounds we are healed<\/p>\n
all we like sheep have gone astray<\/p>\n
we have turned everyone<\/p>\n
to his own way<\/p>\n
and the lord has laid on him the<\/p>\n
iniquity of us all<\/p>\n
he was oppressed and he was afflicted<\/p>\n
yet he opened not Ishmael<\/p>\n
like a lamb that has led to the<\/p>\n
slaughter<\/p>\n
and like a sheep that before its<\/p>\n
shearers is silent<\/p>\n
so he opened not his mouth<\/p>\n
by oppression and judgment he was taken<\/p>\n
away<\/p>\n
and as for his generation who considered<\/p>\n
that he was cut off out of the land of<\/p>\n
the living stricken for the<\/p>\n
transgression of my people<\/p>\n
and they made his grave with the wicked<\/p>\n
and with a rich man in his death<\/p>\n
although he had done no violence and<\/p>\n
there was no deceit in his mouth<\/p>\n
yet it was the will of the Lord to crush<\/p>\n
him<\/p>\n
he has put him to grief<\/p>\n
when his soul makes an offering for<\/p>\n
Guilt he shall see his offspring he<\/p>\n
shall prolong his days the will of the<\/p>\n
Lord shall prosper in his hand<\/p>\n
out of the anguish of his soul<\/p>\n
he shall see and be satisfied<\/p>\n
by his knowledge shall the righteous one<\/p>\n
my servant make many to the accounted<\/p>\n
righteous<\/p>\n
and he shall bear<\/p>\n
their iniquities<\/p>\n
therefore I will divide him a portion<\/p>\n
with the many and he shall divide the<\/p>\n
spoil with the strong because he poured<\/p>\n
out his soul to death<\/p>\n
and was numbered with the transgressors<\/p>\n
yet he bore the sin of many<\/p>\n
and makes intercession<\/p>\n
for the transgressors<\/p>\n
is the word of God<\/p>\n
and they pray for us<\/p>\n
Lord Jesus we thank you<\/p>\n
Lord God<\/p>\n
for your word<\/p>\n
Lord we pray that you would open our<\/p>\n
hearts our minds to understand and to<\/p>\n
receive your truth from your word today<\/p>\n
we ask and pray in your holy name<\/p>\n
and then<\/p>\n
the book of Isaiah<\/p>\n
is prophecy<\/p>\n
I don't think I have to come back on<\/p>\n
which means it was written when it was<\/p>\n
written it beforeetold what was going<\/p>\n
what God was going to do to bring<\/p>\n
Deliverance to his people foreign<\/p>\n
so when the people of Israel read these<\/p>\n
scriptures all those years ago the text<\/p>\n
was pointing ahead to what God promised<\/p>\n
to do in the future<\/p>\n
the portion of Isaiah that we just read<\/p>\n
detailed the sacrificial death that<\/p>\n
Jesus would die when he was crucified<\/p>\n
many years later<\/p>\n
the Jewish people believed that the<\/p>\n
Messiah would surely come with unequaled<\/p>\n
strength and power to deliver them<\/p>\n
that's how universities<\/p>\n
surely is a mighty military ruler with<\/p>\n
great power that would defeat all of<\/p>\n
their enemies right crushing their<\/p>\n
enemies<\/p>\n
but what we have in the Bible as we look<\/p>\n
at the full story of God's work in this<\/p>\n
world is a picture of ultimate humility<\/p>\n
and sacrifice<\/p>\n
God entered into this world Jesus Took<\/p>\n
on flesh Emmanuel God<\/p>\n
aspects of the Incarnation of Jesus<\/p>\n
taking on Humanity<\/p>\n
is that he entered into our suffering<\/p>\n
Jesus suffered he knows what it means to<\/p>\n
be human<\/p>\n
and yet unlike us the Bible says<\/p>\n
he was without sin so he he suffered he<\/p>\n
lived he suffered but he did not sinus<\/p>\n
he was rejected by men verse 3 says he<\/p>\n
was a Man of Sorrows and acquainted with<\/p>\n
grief<\/p>\n
surely he is born our griefs and carried<\/p>\n
our sorrows Jesus in his Humanity<\/p>\n
took on our grief and our suffering<\/p>\n
we've all gone astray the text says<\/p>\n
we've all turned our own way that's a<\/p>\n
summary<\/p>\n
of The Human Condition<\/p>\n
s<\/p>\n
we do our own thing we desire to be our<\/p>\n
own Gods<\/p>\n
we're a sinful people<\/p>\n
and the Book of Romans reveals that the<\/p>\n
punishment of sin is death<\/p>\n
and yet we see<\/p>\n
the mercy of God displayed in and<\/p>\n
through Jesus Christ<\/p>\n
they at some time<\/p>\n
we we have gone astray but the lord has<\/p>\n
laid on him on Jesus the iniquity of us<\/p>\n
all<\/p>\n
remember<\/p>\n
he was pierced for our transgressions he<\/p>\n
was crushed for our iniquities<\/p>\n
upon him<\/p>\n
was the chastisement that brought us<\/p>\n
peace<\/p>\n
with his wounds we are healed<\/p>\n
in Galatians we read this that Christ<\/p>\n
redeemed us from the curse of the law<\/p>\n
by becoming a curse for us<\/p>\n
for it is written and this is speaking<\/p>\n
of his crucifixion cursed is everyone<\/p>\n
who has hanged on a tree<\/p>\n
this was all part of God's<\/p>\n
Sovereign plan to bring about the<\/p>\n
salvation of all that call upon him<\/p>\n
God is the God of Justice<\/p>\n
and our sinfulness leads to death<\/p>\n
but Jesus gave himself as a sacrifice<\/p>\n
for us<\/p>\n
Jesus met the demands of Justice by<\/p>\n
dying<\/p>\n
in our place<\/p>\n
but his sacrificial death was was unjust<\/p>\n
in that he suffered our punishment<\/p>\n
and at the same time it was just<\/p>\n
because Jesus dying it met the demands<\/p>\n
of the Lord<\/p>\n
out of the English verse 11. out of the<\/p>\n
anguish of his soul he shall see and be<\/p>\n
satisfied by his knowledge shall the<\/p>\n
righteous one my servant make many to be<\/p>\n
accounted righteous and he shall bear<\/p>\n
the Messiah<\/p>\n
took the punishment for our sin<\/p>\n
he bore our sin<\/p>\n
and gave himself for us<\/p>\n
he suffered<\/p>\n
that we could have peace<\/p>\n
he was wounded unto death so that we may<\/p>\n
be healed<\/p>\n
in second Corinthians<\/p>\n
this this verse sums up the gospel you<\/p>\n
know even<\/p>\n
uh<\/p>\n
God made him<\/p>\n
who had no sin<\/p>\n
to be sin for us<\/p>\n
so that in him<\/p>\n
we might become the righteousness of God<\/p>\n
Paul Tripp shares this<\/p>\n
the Christmas story is this<\/p>\n
the babe in the manger was the son of<\/p>\n
the most high God<\/p>\n
he willingly came to a place where such<\/p>\n
Unthinkable violence and Injustice<\/p>\n
exists<\/p>\n
the Wrath of the ruler would eventually<\/p>\n
fall on him<\/p>\n
he would die a violent death at the<\/p>\n
hands of evil men<\/p>\n
followers would weep<\/p>\n
that the Messiah<\/p>\n
was dead<\/p>\n
but he would rise again<\/p>\n
and complete the work that he came to<\/p>\n
Earth to do<\/p>\n
well as we begin<\/p>\n
with<\/p>\n
Jesus is the Victorious Messiah<\/p>\n
because he conquered death itself<\/p>\n
all the hope we have for now<\/p>\n
and for eternity rests on the<\/p>\n
resurrection of Jesus from the dead<\/p>\n
in fact Paul reminds us of this in First<\/p>\n
Corinthians<\/p>\n
writing if Christ has not been raised<\/p>\n
your faith<\/p>\n
is futile<\/p>\n
and you're still in your sins<\/p>\n
but Jesus did<\/p>\n
Rise Again from the dead Jesus is the<\/p>\n
Victorious Messiah<\/p>\n
later in the book of Isaiah we're given<\/p>\n
a picture of the trajectory of God's<\/p>\n
unfolding Plan of Salvation and<\/p>\n
restoration of the world<\/p>\n
I will greatly rejoice in the Lord<\/p>\n
my soul shall exalt in my God for he has<\/p>\n
clothed me with the garments of<\/p>\n
salvation<\/p>\n
he has covered me with the robe of<\/p>\n
righteousness as a bridegroom decks<\/p>\n
himself like a priest with a beautiful<\/p>\n
headdress and as a bride adorns herself<\/p>\n
with jewels<\/p>\n
whereas the Earth brings forth its<\/p>\n
sprouts and has a garden causes what is<\/p>\n
sown in it to sprout up<\/p>\n
so the Lord God will cause righteousness<\/p>\n
and praise<\/p>\n
Sprout up before<\/p>\n
all the nations<\/p>\n
yes the Lord God will cause<\/p>\n
righteousness and praise to sprout up<\/p>\n
before all the nations<\/p>\n
Jesus the Victorious Messiah has<\/p>\n
conquered death and will reign<\/p>\n
forevermore<\/p>\n
his kingdom is coming in full<\/p>\n
man<\/p>\n
he will return one day<\/p>\n
but as we await that day we still<\/p>\n
acknowledge and experience the suffering<\/p>\n
of this world<\/p>\n
but because Jesus Victorious Messiah<\/p>\n
Emmanuel God With Us<\/p>\n
because of him we are not alone in our<\/p>\n
suffering<\/p>\n
indeed I count everything as loss<\/p>\n
because of the surpassing worth of<\/p>\n
knowing Christ Jesus my Lord<\/p>\n
for his sake I have suffered the loss of<\/p>\n
all things and count them as rubbish<\/p>\n
in order that I may gain Christ<\/p>\n
and be found in him<\/p>\n
not having a righteousness of my own<\/p>\n
that comes from the law<\/p>\n
but that which comes through faith in<\/p>\n
Christ<\/p>\n
the righteousness from God that depends<\/p>\n
on faith<\/p>\n
that I may know him<\/p>\n
and the power of his resurrection<\/p>\n
and may share<\/p>\n
in his sufferings<\/p>\n
becoming like him in his death<\/p>\n
that by any means possible and may<\/p>\n
attain the resurrection from the dead<\/p>\n
they become Filipino<\/p>\n
Jesus is aware of our suffering<\/p>\n
Theologian Paul Miller shares that the<\/p>\n
Christian Life<\/p>\n
it's really a reenacting of the death<\/p>\n
and resurrection of Jesus Christ<\/p>\n
we die to our desire<\/p>\n
to rule our own hearts and we turn in<\/p>\n
faith to the one that came to save us<\/p>\n
our own suffering our own suffering<\/p>\n
reminds us of this fail and broken world<\/p>\n
and it turns us again and again day<\/p>\n
after day to Jesus the one who knows our<\/p>\n
sufferings and the one that suffered<\/p>\n
that we may be with him for eternity<\/p>\n
thank you he is the Victorious Messiah<\/p>\n
he's the one that conquered death<\/p>\n
the one who will rule forevermore<\/p>\n
and the invitation for us is to come<\/p>\n
into the kingdom<\/p>\n
to come to the Messiah and faith<\/p>\n
to believe in the one who made you who<\/p>\n
loves you<\/p>\n
and who has come to set you free<\/p>\n
look into that Manger<\/p>\n
look into that manger and see<\/p>\n
the one who came to die<\/p>\n
hear the angels song and remember that<\/p>\n
death would be the only way that peace<\/p>\n
would be given<\/p>\n
look at your tree<\/p>\n
and remember another tree<\/p>\n
one not decorated with shining ornaments<\/p>\n
but stained with the blood<\/p>\n
of the son of God<\/p>\n
as you celebrate<\/p>\n
remember that the pathway to your<\/p>\n
celebration<\/p>\n
was the death of the one you celebrated<\/p>\n
and be thankful<\/p>\n
Lord Jesus we praise you for the victory<\/p>\n
that you have over sin and death<\/p>\n
we thank you that you have revealed<\/p>\n
yourself in your word and through the<\/p>\n
Holy Spirit<\/p>\n
that we may know and have hope in you<\/p>\n
we think about the world today with<\/p>\n
heavy hearts<\/p>\n
War fear hatred strife and Justice and<\/p>\n
on and on and on<\/p>\n
and some days if we're honest<\/p>\n
or tempted to despair<\/p>\n
remind us Lord Jesus of your victory<\/p>\n
remind us of your Sovereign rule over<\/p>\n
all things<\/p>\n
remind us of the mercy<\/p>\n
displayed when you entered this world<\/p>\n
as a vulnerable baby<\/p>\n
to deliver us from sin and death<\/p>\n
and remind us that you are coming again<\/p>\n
one day<\/p>\n
we ask and pray all of this<\/p>\n
in your Holy Name Lord Jesus<\/p>\n
