and just to share a little bit about the<\/p>\n
church it's a community of Christians<\/p>\n
that believe we live in and by the grace<\/p>\n
of God<\/p>\n
and we desire to care for and serve the<\/p>\n
city of Bangkok in that Grace and God's<\/p>\n
grace<\/p>\n
we are compelled we're compelled by the<\/p>\n
perfect love of Jesus<\/p>\n
and we want to extend his love to others<\/p>\n
for the past few weeks we've been in a<\/p>\n
series that we've called the I am<\/p>\n
statements of Jesus I am<\/p>\n
in the gospels in the Bible<\/p>\n
we learn about who Jesus is<\/p>\n
Jesus has done what he will do what he<\/p>\n
will bring to fruition<\/p>\n
the I am statements are statements words<\/p>\n
that Jesus spoke about himself<\/p>\n
revealing his identity<\/p>\n
telling us telling the world just who he<\/p>\n
is<\/p>\n
foreign<\/p>\n
about Jesus proclaiming this I am a good<\/p>\n
Shepherds<\/p>\n
and the truth that we see in that<\/p>\n
statement is that Jesus himself is the<\/p>\n
one like a Good Shepherd that cares for<\/p>\n
us<\/p>\n
the one that leads us the one that loves<\/p>\n
us and guides us<\/p>\n
and that he is the one that gave himself<\/p>\n
as a sacrificial lamb for us<\/p>\n
that we may be saved from our sins and<\/p>\n
saved from the ultimate end of our sin<\/p>\n
which is death<\/p>\n
in the Book of Romans in the Bible we<\/p>\n
read this for the wages of sin is death<\/p>\n
but the free gift of God is eternal life<\/p>\n
in Christ Jesus our lord<\/p>\n
there's an old saying in English that<\/p>\n
the only two things that we may be sure<\/p>\n
of in life are is death and taxes<\/p>\n
death<\/p>\n
our death is something that we at least<\/p>\n
need to acknowledge to some degree<\/p>\n
now we don't want to obsess over it<\/p>\n
but the inevitable reality is that our<\/p>\n
fleshly bodies will one day give out<\/p>\n
sorry<\/p>\n
society's cultures have looked at death<\/p>\n
in countless ways throughout history<\/p>\n
and uh well let's I'll let you translate<\/p>\n
that yeah<\/p>\n
an enormous efforts exists right in the<\/p>\n
medical field technological fields to<\/p>\n
Stave off death and to prolong life<\/p>\n
and we're grateful right for medicine<\/p>\n
and that can counter illnesses for<\/p>\n
therapeutic practices to help strengthen<\/p>\n
but we live knowing that death is a part<\/p>\n
of life and each day is a gift<\/p>\n
you've probably heard it said right<\/p>\n
we're never fully alive<\/p>\n
unless we're aware of our eventual death<\/p>\n
plus we're aware of our of our mortality<\/p>\n
now the I am statement that Jesus makes<\/p>\n
in the text we'll look at today<\/p>\n
is about this very faint life and death<\/p>\n
the reality is that yes we live and and<\/p>\n
one day we will<\/p>\n
continue<\/p>\n
so what hope what hope is to be found<\/p>\n
for this life in the face of our<\/p>\n
mortality<\/p>\n
what hope do we have in the face of<\/p>\n
the text today is actually a pretty long<\/p>\n
Passage<\/p>\n
of John chapter 11.<\/p>\n
so I'm going to summarize I'm going to<\/p>\n
share the story and then we'll look at a<\/p>\n
specific part of the passage<\/p>\n
but I'm going to give you homework<\/p>\n
okay you need to read all of John 11. oh<\/p>\n
yeah<\/p>\n
this<\/p>\n
is for this week<\/p>\n
so here's here's the back story<\/p>\n
just like you and me<\/p>\n
Jesus had people that he loved and that<\/p>\n
he cared about<\/p>\n
he had relatives he had his followers<\/p>\n
disciples<\/p>\n
and that we're in community with it<\/p>\n
there were two sisters Mary and Martha<\/p>\n
and along with their brother Lazarus<\/p>\n
they were some of Jesus's close friends<\/p>\n
he knew them and he loved them<\/p>\n
now at the beginning of chapter 11 we<\/p>\n
learned that Lazarus has become illness<\/p>\n
and it must have been serious because<\/p>\n
Mary and Martha actually send a message<\/p>\n
to Jesus to let him know<\/p>\n
[Music]<\/p>\n
and surely they were hoping that Jesus<\/p>\n
would come he would come and help<\/p>\n
you see Jesus had healed people foreign<\/p>\n
but he didn't come<\/p>\n
at least not right away<\/p>\n
in fact the text says that after Jesus<\/p>\n
heard about lazarus's illness he<\/p>\n
actually waited he waited two days where<\/p>\n
he was but<\/p>\n
and he told his disciples of this<\/p>\n
Lazarus has died<\/p>\n
and for your sake I am glad that I was<\/p>\n
not there<\/p>\n
so that you may believe<\/p>\n
but let us go to him<\/p>\n
now this must have seemed strange to the<\/p>\n
Lazarus has died and Jesus was glad he<\/p>\n
was not there<\/p>\n
and he was glad for their sake and so<\/p>\n
that they would believe<\/p>\n
what Jesus meant and what was going to<\/p>\n
happen next<\/p>\n
so they traveled to Bethany The Village<\/p>\n
which was the home of Mary and Martha<\/p>\n
Chris had died<\/p>\n
and when Jesus arrived at the Village<\/p>\n
this is the interaction<\/p>\n

this is John chapter 11 verses 21 7.<\/p>\n
Martha said to Jesus<\/p>\n
Lord if you had been here<\/p>\n
my brother would not have died<\/p>\n
but even now I know that whatever you<\/p>\n
ask from God God will give you<\/p>\n
Jesus said to her<\/p>\n
your brother<\/p>\n
will rise again<\/p>\n
Martha said to him I know that he will<\/p>\n
rise again in the Resurrection on the<\/p>\n
last day<\/p>\n
I am the resurrection and the life<\/p>\n
whoever believes in me though he die yet<\/p>\n
shall he live<\/p>\n
and everyone who lives and Believes In<\/p>\n
Me shall never die do you believe this<\/p>\n
she said to him yes Lord I believe that<\/p>\n
you are the Christ the son of God who is<\/p>\n
coming into the world<\/p>\n
um<\/p>\n
hello<\/p>\n
Martha's words<\/p>\n
were honest and they were raw right now<\/p>\n
if you had been here<\/p>\n
Lazarus would not have died<\/p>\n
she was acknowledging Jesus's power to<\/p>\n
heal<\/p>\n
but was likely disappointed that he had<\/p>\n
not come earlier<\/p>\n
when<\/p>\n
only you had<\/p>\n
Jesus you could<\/p>\n
uh<\/p>\n
you could have healed him Lazarus<\/p>\n
foreign Martha responded again with with<\/p>\n
faith and trust she said I know he will<\/p>\n
and to her Jesus had responded right I<\/p>\n
am the resurrection<\/p>\n
and as he says this he says it along<\/p>\n
with a call to trust him to have faith<\/p>\n
whoever believes in me though he died<\/p>\n
yet shall live and everyone who lives<\/p>\n
and Believes In Me shall never die<\/p>\n
with these words I am the resurrection<\/p>\n
and the light<\/p>\n
Jesus was underscoring his divine nature<\/p>\n
and Power<\/p>\n
he is the source of life<\/p>\n
he has<\/p>\n
he has the final power<\/p>\n
and the message of the Christian faith<\/p>\n
is that Jesus brings this life those<\/p>\n
that believe<\/p>\n
it<\/p>\n
those who believe in Jesus will<\/p>\n
experience the resurrection because he<\/p>\n
is the resurrection<\/p>\n
he is the one that bestows life<\/p>\n
in the book of First John chapter 5 we<\/p>\n
read this this is the testimony that God<\/p>\n
gave us eternal life<\/p>\n
and this life is in his son<\/p>\n
Whoever has the son has life whoever<\/p>\n
does not have the Son of God does not<\/p>\n
have<\/p>\n
him<\/p>\n
friends when we place our faith in Jesus<\/p>\n
as Lord over our lives<\/p>\n
death does not have final power over<\/p>\n
the Apostle Paul writes about this in<\/p>\n
First Corinthians chapter<\/p>\n
for this perishable body must put on the<\/p>\n
imperishable<\/p>\n
and this Mortal body must put on the<\/p>\n
when the perishable puts on the<\/p>\n
and the Mortal puts on immortality then<\/p>\n
shall come to pass the saying that is<\/p>\n
written<\/p>\n
is swallowed up in Victory oh death<\/p>\n
where is your victory<\/p>\n
oh death where is your sting<\/p>\n
The Sting of death is sin the power of<\/p>\n
sin is the law<\/p>\n
but thanks be to God who gives us the<\/p>\n
victory through our Lord<\/p>\n
one time foreign<\/p>\n
yes victory over death<\/p>\n
an eternal life<\/p>\n
is to be found in Jesus Christ<\/p>\n
the Lord of life<\/p>\n
as the story<\/p>\n
continued at Bethany we we see Jesus<\/p>\n
demonstrate great compassion and empathy<\/p>\n
he extended that empathy to Mary and<\/p>\n
Martha and all those who were greedy<\/p>\n
but then the miraculous happened<\/p>\n
Jesus called out the Lazarus he called<\/p>\n
out to him and he said come out<\/p>\n
he brought him back<\/p>\n
to life he called out to Lazarus in<\/p>\n
death and brought him back to life<\/p>\n
he came back from the dead<\/p>\n
now it was one thing for Jesus to<\/p>\n
Proclaim himself right I am the<\/p>\n
resurrection and life<\/p>\n
but it was quite another for him to<\/p>\n
demonstrate it<\/p>\n
this is the heart<\/p>\n
of the Christian message the gospel<\/p>\n
Jesus has the power to heal<\/p>\n
Jesus has the power to give us new life<\/p>\n
in him<\/p>\n
now Lazarus<\/p>\n
you have to read chapter 11 right to see<\/p>\n
what happens okay<\/p>\n
but Lazarus one day he he would die<\/p>\n
again<\/p>\n
but that day<\/p>\n
Jesus spoke into his death and brought<\/p>\n
him back to life<\/p>\n
he showed Mary and Martha and all those<\/p>\n
gathered that he is the Lord of life<\/p>\n
from foreign<\/p>\n
the ultimate display of Jesus's victory<\/p>\n
over death would come later with his own<\/p>\n
death foreign<\/p>\n
for the sins of the world for our sins<\/p>\n
the wages of our sin became his death<\/p>\n
and when we look that Jesus is our<\/p>\n
savior we stand before God<\/p>\n
forgiven of our iniquity forgiven of our<\/p>\n
sins<\/p>\n
but as Jesus<\/p>\n
was crucified died and was buried<\/p>\n
but death<\/p>\n
could not hold him down<\/p>\n
the entire Christian faith rests on the<\/p>\n
resurrection of Jesus Christ himself<\/p>\n

Apostle Paul writes about this he says<\/p>\n
in First Corinthians if Christ has not<\/p>\n
been raised in your faith our faith is<\/p>\n
futile<\/p>\n

we are saved<\/p>\n
Christ himself<\/p>\n
yes Jesus<\/p>\n
Jesus is the one who saved<\/p>\n
come to him again and again let him be<\/p>\n
Lord of your life<\/p>\n
and let him give you new life in him<\/p>\n

Lord Jesus I pray that you would help<\/p>\n
each of us to see you for who you are<\/p>\n
the Lord of life and the one who brings<\/p>\n
restoration into our very lives<\/p>\n
help us to trust you in those moments<\/p>\n
