sweet phrase that is that

you are a God who is Refuge to us no

matter what our old year the previous

year has been like no matter what the

year to come is going to be like you are

a refuge and we pray that you would

Center

our hearts and Minds on this truth today

as we come to you word and we ask this

in your name amen

all right so let me read

from Psalm 71 there there's Thai

versions if you'd rather have Thai

there's but there's English right there

so just follow rock of Refuge to which I may

continually come you have given command

to save Me For You Are My Rock and my

Fortress

Rescue Me O my God from the hand of the

wicked from the grasp of the unjust and

the cruel man

For You O Lord are my hope my trust O

Lord from my youth

upon you I have leaned from before my

birth

you are he who took me from my mother's

womb my praise is continually of you

I have been as important to many but you

are my strong Refuge

my mouth is filled with your praise and

with your glory all the day do not cast

me off in the time of old age forsake me

not when my strength is spent for my

enemies speak concerning me those who

watch for my life consult together and

say God has forsaken him pursue and

seize him for there is none to deliver

him

oh God be not far from me oh my God make

haste to help me May my accusers be put

to shame and consumed

consumed with scorn and disgrace may

they be covered who seek my hurt but I

will hope continually and will praise

you yet more and more

my mouth will tell of your righteous

acts of your Deeds of Salvation all the

day for their number is past my

knowledge with the mighty Deeds of the

Lord God I will come I will remind them

of your righteousness yours alone o God

for my youth you have taught me and I

still Proclaim your wondrous Deeds

so even to old age and gray hairs oh God

do not forsake me until I Proclaim your

might to another generation your power

to all those to come

your righteousness o God reaches to the

High Heavens you who have done great

things o God who is like you you who

have made me see many troubles and

calamities you will revive me again from

the depths of the earth you will bring

me up again you will increase my

greatness and comfort me again

and I will also praise you with the

heart for your faithfulness oh my God I

will sing praises to you with the liar a

Holy One of Israel

my lips will shout for Joy when I sing

praises to you and my soul also which

you have redeemed

and my tongue will talk Of Your

Righteous help all the day long for they

have been put to shame and disappointed

who sought to do me hurt

so every year we do 10 Psalms at Grace

City ten Psalms and this year we usually

do them all in a row we decided to split

them up this year we're doing the first

we're doing 71 to 75

is that right did I do my math right

yeah

and the reason we do this well there's

several reasons one of the reasons

though is we believe that God's word is

God's word and that that when we bow to

it that when we preach it consecutively

then when we when we we have these

little Series where we're preaching the

text as God arranged it as God put it

together then um

then we're helping ourselves to grow

we're helping our congregation to grow

but also the Psalms

think about what the Psalms are for a

minute really it's the song book of

God's people this is where I mean for

thousands of years this is what God's

people have sung so and even today

people still sing the Psalms

um I wish that we did this more actually

I'd love to sing more Psalms because I

mean our songs are great you know

they're pretty good but this is this is

the Bible so if we could sing these

would be great if you guys want to get

busy writing songs and hymns and stuff

like that out of these Psalms that'd be

great

um

but the Psalms or the songs

are where we go think about it it's

where we go

when Trouble Comes

right like God made us

to be moved by music

by poetry

God I mean think about when when you are

listening to your favorite musician your

set your favorite songs you listen to it

and you love them because they do

something to you they

so they they

produce something in you they they make

chill bumps come up sometimes you know

if it's the right song

they get you through hard times at times

certain songs do that

this is what the Psalms are the Psalms

are the place where you go in those kind

of times

and this is a good psalm for the new

year because it teaches us how to live a

fateful life

in the midst of trouble basically a

faithful life

in the midst of Life of day-to-day life

the mess of Life the hard things about

life

so how many of you by show of hands made

New Year's resolutions

we have one person that made New Year's

resolution did you break any yet

yeah there we go all right that's

honesty right there good job that's okay

that's what they're for you you're

supposed to make them and then break

them as soon as you can

uh I don't know about you I just love

the new year because it's like it even

though it's really not it kind of is

like a fresh start you kind of you put

yourself in this mental place where all

right everything's new we're making a

fresh start the old is gone we got a new

chance

to do whatever to to finally get

six-pack abs I've never done it and I

probably won't do it this year but it

the hope is there

but I have three kids so it's not

happening

but we make these resolutions so that

because this is how we do it we look

towards the end of the year right we

look out in the future and we say this

is who I want to be or this is who I

want to be this is what I want to be

like or this is what I want to look like

in 12 months at the end of the next at

this point next year these these

resolutions will shape that person

sometimes literally

and we build these habits we never do

but we the the goal is the idea is the

theory is we would build these habits

that would shape us into a new person or

to the vision of who we wanted to be

this Psalm is kind of like that

it's a little bit

like if we look at what's happening here

in this Psalm it's kind of like New

Year's resolutions idea

not for their psalmist who wrote it but

for us who look at it

and I've titled the sermon holy rhythms

for a faithful life

the psalmist the guy who wrote this

is old he's in his old age now you look

in verse in 9 and 18 he's an old man

he's it appears that he's had a lifetime

of knowing and trusting and loving God

he's known him a long time he's walked

with God a long time

and in this Psalm he shows us how we can

face day-to-day trouble kind of the mess

the trouble the hard things that come

out or that come along in our day in our

in our days in our lives

and he shows us how to face trouble

with three holy habits I'm gonna call

them or holy rhythms

and the first one is he remembers so

we're gonna look at how he remembers and

what he remembers

the second is that he trusts now all

these are simple they're not there's

nothing

groundbreaking here it's all simple but

he trusts he trusts that God is who he

is and is going to do what he said he's

going to do

and then he responds In Praise

so let's look at trouble first let's

look at trouble

so as you look at this passage you'll

see and this is the way scripture works

a lot of times if you're if you're

trying to figure out what is this script

or what is the passage that you're

looking at trying to say to me look at

what it repeats look at what it says

over and over and over again

so when he's talking about trouble he

uses these words shame

disgrace he uses the phrase cast me off

forsaken

troubles Calamity I mean these are real

like not just small things they're big

things usually is what he's talking

about

and even shame like from Westerner maybe

shame is is less than maybe what an

easterner would feel

but the psalmist here he's faced real

trouble

and not only trouble that just kind of

happens to come along like like maybe

self-inflicted trouble I have some of

that you have some of that we we tend to

I was listening to Harry Potter

yesterday I don't know if you're

offended by it or not but I was

listening to Harry Potter yesterday and

Albus Dumbledore says this this is

unplanned unscripted but he says this

great great quote he says he says humans

have have the uh what do you say

they have The Knack of choosing the

precise wrong thing for themselves

something like that we look for trouble

we we seek we welcome it but there's

also god-given trouble that that the

psalmist talks about so let's look at

the characteristics of of the trouble

that he's talking about here

so the first characteristic that we see

is that it's common as common so in

verses 13 and 20 may my accusers would

be put to shame and consumed with

scorned and disgrace disgrace may they

be covered who seek my hurt

and then in verse 20

you who have made me see many troubles

and calamities will revive me again so

it's a common element of his life it's

not a one-off it's not just something

that happened once and it's one and done

but it's something

that comes again and again and again and

again and if you from your own life

experience you know

trouble is coming this year

there's going to be hard times there's

gonna be hard things about this year

now it may be

it may be a diagnosis

it may be a phone call that you get with

some awful news

it may just be this nagging sin in your

own life

and the consequences of falling to that

sin over and over and over

but trouble's coming

it may be maybe passive or maybe what

other people do to you

just last week Ransom my middle child

um phase five and he was he's looking so

sad and like so broken he was crying and

I said I said what's wrong buddy he said

Daddy I never get to do the things that

I want to do there's so much trouble in

my life and I said what are you and I

was thinking to myself what do you mean

we have a pretty good life we do and he

said I've never been to Antarctica

I've never ridden in a helicopter and

nobody will take me to the moon and so

he thinks that he has trouble

but that's a joke but I mean

that's the way any little thing in our

life anything that we feel that's wrong

it becomes it becomes the thing in our

it's common it's common to humans you're

going to have trouble this year

another characteristic of this of this

uh this trouble that we see in Psalm 71

is it it's personal

so people are attacking him personally

it's not just a general there's trouble

out there and he's in the middle of it

you know like the economy's bad or

something like that no he is being

attacked he is being

people are saying seize him

yeah pursue and sees him for there's

none to deliver him

he's he has enemies

he has trouble it's in its personal

trouble it's directed at him

now

we probably don't have this kind of

trouble in our lives

but if you had someone

that you're dealing with that there's

maybe there's a sin they're they're

sinning against you maybe they're

backbiting maybe they're gossiping maybe

they're slandering we all have trouble

and that that's and it's usually there's

some personal

side to it

three it's god-given the third

characteristic is this god-given

so

in verse 20 he says you who have made me

to see many troubles and calamities

God is

plentifully at times in our lives making

us see calamity

he's making us see trouble he's bringing

these things in our lives

some trouble is passive some we receive

from others some we make for ourselves

but then sometimes God gives us that

God gives us trouble God give he gave

Israel trouble to teach them more do you

remember that

he gave them trouble

when they wandered from him to

discipline them

God gave job trouble he allowed trouble

to happen

the fourth thing you see here is that

it's public so everybody's in on it so

everybody around him now this is

possibly the King this is possibly David

talking so of course everybody's going

to know about his troubling about his

attackers

but sometimes our troubles become public

and the fifth thing is that it's

significant

so all the language that the people are

using here against his enemies they're

using stuff they're saying things like

God has forsaken him

so that's a public thing people are

saying God has forsaken him that and

that's also significant it's weighty now

just like in my example with Ransom all

our troubles feel weighty to us all our

troubles feel that way

but this is what when we're reading this

passage we're seeing a common trouble

we're seeing

it happens to everyone it comes to

everyone it's personal it's it we feel

it in our hearts we we it's it's

directed at us it's god-given

God allows it and God even gives it at

times it's public people know about it

it's significant

now our troubles may not exactly match

this

but when your Trouble Comes this year

when you have issues this year when you

have problems when your teammate

when your roommate

when your husband or wife when your

child sins against you

where do we go

we go to the Psalms

see there's Comfort here because this

the Psalms actually reflect our reality

we come to the Psalms because they show

us how to cry out to God they show us

our lives put down in God's word it

shows us that God

knows he understands what's going on in

our lives

there was a season in my life

a pretty horrible situation backbiting

betrayal

even threats on

well threats I would say that

were made and it shocked and hurt me so

much that

there was a time where I couldn't

like I just couldn't read I don't mean I

forgot how to read but I I like I used

to read about two or three books a week

and just that was kind of a discipline I

had and then after this happened I could

only concentrate on the Psalms

and the reason why is because they're

raw they're emotional they're painful at

times

there's a Psalm that says that ends with

darkness is my only friend

the Psalms reflect

Our Lives they reflect the darkness that

we Face day to day

and they teach us how to live for God

how to live Faithfully

in the midst of Exile we're all in Exile

we're all in a fallen World we're all

waiting

to go home

and they the Psalms walk us through that

they walk us through that life

and even more than this these are the

prayers of Jesus

now you think about

the place of the Psalms and Jewish

worship the place of the Psalms in the

life of a first century Hebrew growing

up

Jesus saying this psalm Jesus prayed

this Psalm when you when you read Jesus

words his his words drip with the Psalms

and with Isaiah of course

trouble when Jesus read

these words accuse

forsaken cast off shamed treated with

scorn and disgrace forsaken when Jesus

was reading and meditating and praying

this Psalm because he did

I wonder I wonder

did he did he realize this is me I will

be forsaken I will be ashamed I will

take all their trouble

so we have trouble we know that

how what are the habits what are the

rhythms

that we need to build into our lives the

resolutions if you will that will help

us to walk Faithfully with God this year

and the rest of our lives

well the psalmist remembers next we see

that he remembers he remembers who God

is and what he's done both in his

personal history and in the history of

the world

and ultimately he's able to rely on this

he remembers he knows that God is a God

who welcomes him listen again to verse 3

continually come

how many parents in the room

all right I'm gonna I'm gonna be this is

a confession

sometimes I want to read a book and I'm

just sitting in a chair and I want to

read a book and I want to get through a

chapter

and all I hear I haven't read a book in

eight years Abigail's eight years old

now I haven't read a book in eight years

now basically

Daddy Daddy Daddy Daddy come look at

this okay Daddy Daddy they come to me

continually

and I get tired of it I mean this is a

confession this is not right it's not

good this is the evil in my heart I want

my kids I want to mail them back to

America and let them live with my family

for a while so that I can read a book

again

God never gets tired of Us coming God

never gets tired of you coming to him

this passes this verse be to me a rock

of Refuge to which I may continually

come now okay I know how much I mess up

and I know how annoying I can be and God

says

I can come to him continually so he

remembers this is a God who you can come

to continually

that's hard to believe it's true

especially when you know yourself

secondly he he remembers this is a God

who has been there all my life

he's present

he's active in his life

he knows God knows the psalmist the

person who wrote this Psalm he God knows

him to the bottom he knows everything

about him he's been there listen upon

you I have leaned from before my birth

that's a long time

womb

this is a God who has just been there

who has been present now some of us

maybe have fathers

who haven't been present

sometimes I've had to realize I'm not a

father who's always present I need to be

that I need to do that better

this is a father who is present who is

there

who's been there for him all his life

thoroughly he remembers this is a God

who cares deeply and personally for him

he says oh God for my youth this is

verse 17. for my youth you have taught

me and I still Proclaim your wondrous

Deeds

from my youth you have taught me this is

like the picture of a father who just

disciples and Carries and teaches his

son

throughout his life and brings him up

fourthly this is a God who will show

himself to Future Generations verse 18.

so even to my old age and gray hairs oh

God do not forsake me until I Proclaim

your might to another generation the

psalmist knows this isn't a god who's

just about me and Jesus and individual

relationship this is a God who who is

over time who's not bound by time and

who is who is showing his might to

Generations he is a God who works in

Generations not just in individual lives

and then verse 19

this is a God who is he remembers this

is God who is utterly unique

heavens you who have done great things

oh God who is like you so in the midst

of trouble he takes time to remember

this is the god who has dealt with me

all of my life this is the god who has

been with me all my life this is a God

who know who there is no one like him

he remembers

I don't know about you but for me it's

really easy to forget it's really easy

to forget who God is and what he's done

to forget the gospel

how do how can we do this better how can

we remember better in this new year

how can we build this holy habit this

holy Rhythm how can we make a resolution

to remember

well if we follow the psalmist this is

what he does he recites you know he's

this is just a recitation of what God

has done over and over he if you read

through it is it's it's a poem one so

it's it's it's lyrical but it's also

over and over

oh Lord my refuge deliver me rescue me

save me Refuge rescue Rock and Fortress

all it just goes throughout the psalm

and there's this recitation of God's

person and God's actions

secondly he sings

so we need to recite but we also need to

sing We need to sing our praise to God

if we want to remember

sing

find a Time find a place to sing come

here every week and sing or find a

church near you and sing

because that's how God will drive these

truths into your heart that's how you

will remember

my kids there's these little scripture

songs that we do with our kids and my

especially Abigail she just knows she

knows way more scripture than I do

because she just listens to these songs

over and over and over and they're in

her heart she sings God's word and it's

the sweetest thing

then he prays you know In this passage

he prays now

okay this is everybody's neutral

resolution who's a Believer every year I

want to pray more right that's what we

always do and then we we go through our

first day without praying right

you're all guilty we're all guilty but

that's just

how do we remember

who God is we take the scriptures and we

pray them we pray them back to God we

speak God's word back to him and ask for

these things ask for God be my refuge

God let me never be put to shame deliver

me rescue me whatever is going on your

life pray those things

and then he recounts he tells he he uses

these words tell Proclaim my lips will

shout my tongue will talk my mouth will

tell he goes to other people and tells

them as a way of remembering as a way of

him remembering helping other people

remember who God is and what he's done

the next holy Rhythm or holy habit

we could use his Trust

you know God is uh he's a refuge he's

rescue he's a rock and a fortress and

this idea of rescue that this uh this

psalmist is talking about he's talking

about God's historic faithfulness and

presence and how huge that theme is uh

in not only his life but also all

throughout scripture because God has

rescued before he's a God who rescues

and he will always rescue his own

so even before we're able to cry out he

rescues and when as his children we cry

out he rescues

and there's two parts to this crying out

and we're not going to walk through all

the verses but in verses 2 3 9 12 and

18. if you look at that

it's almost they do this

there's crying out and then there's

taking Refuge cry out take refuse cry

out take refuge

so God wants us to cry out to him

if you want to if you want this if you

want to be faithful this year if you

want to to walk with God

cry out to him when the Trouble Comes

cry out

he's like us he's saying be like a

scared child a terrified child who's

crying out for Daddy who just Longs who

needs Daddy

and throughout the Psalms if we read the

Psalms there's this kind of desperate

constant crying out over and over and

over

have you been there like have you been

in a place is there an area of your life

where

you you're terrified or you're tired or

you're without hope or you're desperate

cry out cry out to him

and then the second thing here is taking

refuge in verses 1 5 7 14 19 21 20 and

23. sometimes it's easy for us to cry

out you know when when the hard times

come it's really easy actually to cry

out

because that's our maybe sometimes our

first response we we cry out to God we

pray God if you would only deliver me

from this you would take this away then

and then we we bargained don't we we

barter with God

but what do you take refuge in in those

and think about this

the word that the psalm is using is is

Refuge Rock

Fortress a place of safety

sometimes from for me I will take refuge

in

football

now that sounds so stupid I know but

what is your stupid thing that you take

refuge in what what when things are

really hard

when you're scared what do you run to to

kind of take your mind off it that's

your Refuge that's your idol right there

well do you is it food is it money is it

sex is it

what is it is it dating is it is it

video games what is it there's a friend

of mine who

is just trouble has followed him all his

life some of that his trouble was put on

him some of that trouble

is self well he finds it

and

he'll cry out

and that which is a good thing but then

he will spend hours and hours and hours

in a video game now he's he's a 43 year

old man like me

and his marriage is dying his kids hate

him because he will not run to the

Refuge in trouble he'll run to his video

games

and that's what false Refuge does it

kills our relationships it kills our

relationship with God and it kills our

faith really

who are we taking refuge in what are we

taking refuge in

listen Jesus came to be

your Refuge

Jesus cried out

to his father

but he was forsaken for us

in order that we may cry out and he can

be our refuge

and then the last thing that we do the

last kind of holy habit or holy rhythm

is that we praise and this word prays

and this this concept of praising is

used more than anything else in this

passage now which is which is telling I

mean this is an old man who's walked

with God for a long time and he's having

continuous calamitous trouble in this

and if you notice what happens in the

psalm here

if you read through it

the words like shame

do not cast me off forsaken

disgrace

all those troubles troubles and

calamities all these words they were

with they were on

the psalmist they were on him in fact he

whatever was happening in his life was

so bad that his enemies thought God has

forsaken him God has left him abandon

but by the end of the psalm we see that

all of those things the direction has

changed

put them on your enemies put them on my

enemies

all shame all condemnation all Calamity

and trouble is ultimately heaped on

God's enemies and not on us and that is

a truth you know we meditate a little

bit on Romans 8. best chapter in the

Bible the message there and the message

here is the same

trouble is coming

but we need to remember that rescue is

also coming

and then that should drive us to praise

so the application for us is praise

how do we how do we

live a faithful life how do we walk with

God Faithfully in 2023 when there's

trouble we praise

this has to be a a holy Rhythm a holy

Habit in our lives we come to him we

come together we do it individually we

praise the one who has done all these

things because when you praise you

remind yourself you're remembering

actually

who he is and what he's done

and we Proclaim so whatever you praise

you will Proclaim that thing

whatever you praise you will proclaim

the thing that you love the thing that

you that you

just Delight in

whatever you praise you're going to talk

about that thing

you're going to talk about what you love

so let's make

because

in the midst of our troubles in the

midst of our shame and our disgrace in

the midst of even being even feeling

forsaken he has come

so that we may remember he was he has

rescued us therefore Let Us Praise and

let's Proclaim that salvation to the

people around us let's pray

father we thank you

that you are a God who

who loves us so deeply

has given us a redeemer

who has taken our shame who was forsaken

who was disgraced

so that we

may have Refuge that we may have rescue

Lord I pray that you would help us you

would take this word and apply it to our

hearts

let us build these holy rhythms

remembering the gospel remembering who

you are and what you've done

remembering your rescue

crying out to you taking refuge in you

and praising you let us as we walk

through this New Year Lord let us walk

through doing these things

we ask all this in your name amen

","":
Grace
