that we are about around that time where<\/p>\n
we need to start getting used to putting<\/p>\n
in two zero two three into our phones<\/p>\n
and planners instead of 2022.<\/p>\n
we're also in a time of reflection and<\/p>\n
New Beginnings<\/p>\n
because many of us choose to begin new<\/p>\n
practices and habits at the beginning of<\/p>\n
the year<\/p>\n
some of us may choose to exercise more<\/p>\n
make better choices with food better<\/p>\n
financial decisions<\/p>\n
hoping to read the Bible in one year<\/p>\n
others of us might hope to spend more<\/p>\n
time with family and friends work on<\/p>\n
bettering relationships being able to<\/p>\n
forgive more being more generous setting<\/p>\n
better boundaries<\/p>\n
and so on and so forth<\/p>\n
but what these New Year resolutions tell<\/p>\n
us is that we all wish for a better<\/p>\n
world<\/p>\n
for ourselves for those around us<\/p>\n
we want certain things in our life to<\/p>\n
change<\/p>\n
we want to get further away from<\/p>\n
suffering<\/p>\n
and closer to satisfaction<\/p>\n
so imagine a world<\/p>\n
where everyone prospers where there is<\/p>\n
no suffering no pain<\/p>\n
imagine a world where Justice is<\/p>\n
administered rightly<\/p>\n
where there is no hunger or disease<\/p>\n
where people live at Harmony with the<\/p>\n
environment<\/p>\n
a world where there is true and Lasting<\/p>\n
peace<\/p>\n
is such a world possible<\/p>\n
this is the world described in our psalm<\/p>\n
for today we're continuing our Series in<\/p>\n
the Psalms so we're going to look at<\/p>\n
five Psalms beginning at 71 and<\/p>\n
finishing at 75 and so today we're<\/p>\n
looking at psalm 72.<\/p>\n
so let me read to us the words of the<\/p>\n
psalm<\/p>\n
endow the king with your Justice o God<\/p>\n
the royal son with your righteousness<\/p>\n
may he judge your people in<\/p>\n
righteousness your afflicted ones with<\/p>\n
Justice<\/p>\n
May the mountains bring prosperity to<\/p>\n
the people the hills the fruit of<\/p>\n
righteousness<\/p>\n
may he defend The Afflicted among the<\/p>\n
people and save the children of the<\/p>\n
needy may he crush the oppressor<\/p>\n
may he endure as long as the sun as long<\/p>\n
as the moon through all generations<\/p>\n
may he be like rain<\/p>\n
falling on a Moen lawn like showers<\/p>\n
watering the Earth<\/p>\n
in his days May the righteous flourish<\/p>\n
and prosperity abound till the Moon is<\/p>\n
no more may he rule from sea to Sea and<\/p>\n
from the river to the ends of the Earth<\/p>\n
May the desert tribes bow before him and<\/p>\n
his enemies lick the Dust<\/p>\n
made the kings of tarshish and of<\/p>\n
Distant Shores bring tribute to him<\/p>\n
May the kings of Sheba and seba present<\/p>\n
him gifts may all Kings bow down to him<\/p>\n
and all nations serve him for he will<\/p>\n
deliver the needy who cry out The<\/p>\n
Afflicted who have no one to help<\/p>\n
he will take pity on the week and the<\/p>\n
needy and save the needy from death he<\/p>\n
will rescue them from oppression and<\/p>\n
violence for precious is their blood and<\/p>\n
his sight<\/p>\n
long may he live May Gold from Sheba be<\/p>\n
given him may people ever pray for him<\/p>\n
and bless him all day long<\/p>\n
May green abounds throughout the land on<\/p>\n
the tops of the hills May its way<\/p>\n
May the crops flourish like Lebanon and<\/p>\n
Thrive like grass of the field<\/p>\n
may his name endure forever may it<\/p>\n
continue as long as the sun then our<\/p>\n
Nations will be blessed through him and<\/p>\n
they will call him blessed<\/p>\n
praise be to the Lord God<\/p>\n
the god of Israel who alone does<\/p>\n
marvelous Deeds<\/p>\n
praise be to his glorious name forever<\/p>\n
May the whole earth be filled with his<\/p>\n
glory amen and amen<\/p>\n
this concludes the prayers of David Son<\/p>\n
of Jesse<\/p>\n
Psalm 72 the psalm is a coronation psalm<\/p>\n
and if we read it carefully we'll see<\/p>\n
that it has to do with the coronation of<\/p>\n
a king to the throne of Israel<\/p>\n
and so when it was written when the<\/p>\n
psalm was written it was meant to be<\/p>\n
read as a prayer for the king<\/p>\n
when Solomon was crowned and certainly<\/p>\n
when other descendants of David were<\/p>\n
crowned<\/p>\n
because the psalm is a prayer asking<\/p>\n
that God's king would reign in<\/p>\n
to Reign justly and wisely and for the<\/p>\n
people of God to be blessed<\/p>\n
and so this is how we can read the psalm<\/p>\n
on one level<\/p>\n
but if we read this word this Psalm<\/p>\n
carefully<\/p>\n
we'll see that no earthly King could<\/p>\n
ever hold the weight of the Glorious<\/p>\n
words in the Sun<\/p>\n
no earthly King could do justice to the<\/p>\n
High Calling of the Sun<\/p>\n
so while this can be read as a prayer<\/p>\n
for Israel's King<\/p>\n
it describes and it points to God's<\/p>\n
ideal King<\/p>\n
and so when we read the psalm we learn<\/p>\n
we learn a lot but we're going to look<\/p>\n
at three things today we're going to<\/p>\n
learn one what this king is like<\/p>\n
two why we need this King<\/p>\n
and three who this King is<\/p>\n
so<\/p>\n
what is God's ideal King like<\/p>\n
what are his attributes and his<\/p>\n
qualities what marks his character<\/p>\n
these are some of the questions that the<\/p>\n
psalm answers<\/p>\n
and so one thing that's interesting<\/p>\n
is how many ancient legends in all of<\/p>\n
our cultures go like this they go like<\/p>\n
this there was once a great king who<\/p>\n
ruled with wisdom and Justice and power<\/p>\n
and compassion<\/p>\n
and therefore when the king ruled when<\/p>\n
the King was in power the land and the<\/p>\n
people experienced prosperity and<\/p>\n
blessing<\/p>\n
everyone blossomed and we all reached<\/p>\n
our potential the land is in its golden<\/p>\n
age<\/p>\n
but something happens something has<\/p>\n
taken the king away and everything falls<\/p>\n
into decay<\/p>\n
but<\/p>\n
they look forward to the day when the<\/p>\n
king will come back and make everything<\/p>\n
this is this is a theme that's in<\/p>\n
stories from all over the world uh just<\/p>\n
one modern example where we see this<\/p>\n
theme is in the modern Legend the Lord<\/p>\n
of the Rings where there is a true king<\/p>\n
but he's hidden<\/p>\n
and when he shows up he'll make<\/p>\n
everything okay<\/p>\n
so a question we can ask is why why do<\/p>\n
all these Legends why do all these<\/p>\n
legends exist when the actual human<\/p>\n
record of Kings is actually terrible<\/p>\n
there have been very very few human<\/p>\n
Kings in history that have been good<\/p>\n
Kings<\/p>\n
the actual record of Kings throughout<\/p>\n
history is tyranny corruption<\/p>\n
exploitation<\/p>\n
slavery and so in most places in the<\/p>\n
world the form of monarchy<\/p>\n
has been toppled and replaced with some<\/p>\n
kind of democracy<\/p>\n
in spite of that though in spite of the<\/p>\n
fact that<\/p>\n
there's such a terrible record of Kings<\/p>\n
throughout history why is there such a<\/p>\n
Fascination in these Legends<\/p>\n
with this kind of King<\/p>\n
why do these Legends have such powerful<\/p>\n
impact on us<\/p>\n
why is it that we create Kings<\/p>\n
why do we take actors and actresses and<\/p>\n
music artists and groups like blackpink<\/p>\n
and BTS and turn them into Kings<\/p>\n
we crowned them we adore them they have<\/p>\n
influence over us<\/p>\n
why is there this need for Kings<\/p>\n
all Christians we know that democracy is<\/p>\n
medicine it's not food and we can't live<\/p>\n
on medicine<\/p>\n
and the reason we have democracy is<\/p>\n
because human beings are so sinful that<\/p>\n
none of us are actually fit to rule<\/p>\n
but we need a king we were built for a<\/p>\n
king the reason for all these legends<\/p>\n
about Kings the reason we adore and<\/p>\n
create Kings is because we were made for<\/p>\n
a king one who rules with<\/p>\n
righteousness compassion Justice and<\/p>\n
Glory<\/p>\n
we were made to give ourselves to submit<\/p>\n
to adore that King and this is what the<\/p>\n
Bible says that there is a king So<\/p>\n
Glorious shining brighter than the sun<\/p>\n
so that even the greatest Earthly kings<\/p>\n
are just a shadow of the ideal King that<\/p>\n
the psalm speaks about<\/p>\n
and the Bible says if we reject this<\/p>\n
true king<\/p>\n
we will find a king because we have to<\/p>\n
we can't reject our innate desire for a<\/p>\n
king and so even if we reject the true<\/p>\n
king even if we say oh Christianity<\/p>\n
isn't true it's a fairy tale even if we<\/p>\n
say that we will find someone to adore<\/p>\n
we will find a savior whether it's a<\/p>\n
K-pop Idol a leader or someone who comes<\/p>\n
in and sweeps us off our feet<\/p>\n
romantically or even ourselves<\/p>\n
we need a king and so what's being<\/p>\n
described in our psalm for today is the<\/p>\n
and so we see<\/p>\n
in verses one to seven that Israel's<\/p>\n
hope<\/p>\n
was for a righteous King a perfectly<\/p>\n
righteous King and that this king would<\/p>\n
judge<\/p>\n
in righteousness with Justice perfectly<\/p>\n
injustices would be corrected properly<\/p>\n
Israel's Hope was for a righteous King<\/p>\n
who would bring Justice<\/p>\n
who would make things right<\/p>\n
so that there would be no more wrongs<\/p>\n
in verses 3 to 7 is confident that life<\/p>\n
under such a king would be<\/p>\n
extraordinarily good<\/p>\n
it says in verse 3 May the mountains<\/p>\n
bring prosperity to the people the hills<\/p>\n
the fruit of righteousness<\/p>\n
and then in verse 7<\/p>\n
says in his days May the righteous<\/p>\n
flourish and prosperity abound till the<\/p>\n
Moon is no more<\/p>\n
so the word Prosperity here is actually<\/p>\n
one of the most famous words in Hebrew<\/p>\n
it's shalom<\/p>\n
which means peace well-being<\/p>\n
it means<\/p>\n
all things as it should be the world<\/p>\n
when it's functioning rightly<\/p>\n
and the fruit of righteousness when<\/p>\n
there is perfect and complete<\/p>\n
righteousness and goodness the<\/p>\n
expectation is that the people Prosper<\/p>\n
the righteous flourish there is peace<\/p>\n
there is Shalom<\/p>\n
and so life under this king is life how<\/p>\n
it's meant to be lived in Perfect<\/p>\n
Harmony<\/p>\n
we also see that this king's rule is<\/p>\n
compassionate so verse 4 may he defend<\/p>\n
The Afflicted among the people and save<\/p>\n
the children of the needy may he crush<\/p>\n
the oppressor<\/p>\n
and so we see that this King rules with<\/p>\n
Justice and righteousness and he comes<\/p>\n
to the rescue of The Afflicted and the<\/p>\n
needy<\/p>\n
so he's not only a military protector<\/p>\n
he's also compassionate to those who are<\/p>\n
weakest and in need<\/p>\n
so in this we see a king who is the<\/p>\n
perfect combination of justice and<\/p>\n
compassion<\/p>\n
strong enough to deliver the people from<\/p>\n
every oppressor gentle and tender enough<\/p>\n
to care for the people in every trial<\/p>\n
not only so we see in verses five to<\/p>\n
seven that this king's Reign is endless<\/p>\n
says his Reign endures as long as the<\/p>\n
sun through all generations so this King<\/p>\n
will rule forever<\/p>\n
now is that just hyperbole is that just<\/p>\n
exaggeration<\/p>\n
well all of us know that no earthly King<\/p>\n
could live forever<\/p>\n
but God's ideal king that's described<\/p>\n
here does<\/p>\n
God's ideal King is on the throne<\/p>\n
forever<\/p>\n
there is no end to his righteous and<\/p>\n
just rain verse 6 says this king is like<\/p>\n
rain falling on a moon field like<\/p>\n
showers watering the Earth<\/p>\n
because of this king's righteous<\/p>\n
judgment on the land the people will<\/p>\n
flourish Prosperity will abound<\/p>\n
it's an image of abundant crops being<\/p>\n
watered<\/p>\n
in short<\/p>\n
there is no end to the shalom<\/p>\n
and prosperity<\/p>\n
of people who live under this King<\/p>\n
what's even more verses 8 to 11 show us<\/p>\n
that this king's Reign is universal<\/p>\n
God's King rules to the ends of the<\/p>\n
Earth<\/p>\n
the righteous rule of justice and<\/p>\n
compassion is extended to the whole<\/p>\n
so certainly this was hyperbole when<\/p>\n
read of Israelite Kings<\/p>\n
but when read in light of God's true<\/p>\n
ideal King it's not an exaggeration at<\/p>\n
all<\/p>\n
God's ideal King<\/p>\n
is one whose rule makes everything okay<\/p>\n
one who puts things right again<\/p>\n
God's ideal King brings about<\/p>\n
restoration and healing<\/p>\n
and it says may all Kings bow to him and<\/p>\n
all nations serve him<\/p>\n
isn't that amazing the races and the<\/p>\n
Nations always at war with one another<\/p>\n
are now offering themselves in service<\/p>\n
to this King they are bowing down and<\/p>\n
serving this King<\/p>\n
and so here we see another<\/p>\n
definitive difference between this great<\/p>\n
king<\/p>\n
and the Kings the leaders of the world<\/p>\n
because how do the kings of the world<\/p>\n
expand their Kingdom by military<\/p>\n
conquest by fighting Wars and<\/p>\n
overwhelming Nations around them would<\/p>\n
force and so when that happened what<\/p>\n
usually happens the people and nation<\/p>\n
that is conquered usually end up having<\/p>\n
great resentment towards their captors<\/p>\n
because they never wanted to be<\/p>\n
conquered in the first place<\/p>\n
but here why do the nations of the world<\/p>\n
worship and offer themselves in service<\/p>\n
to this great king<\/p>\n
it's not because they have been<\/p>\n
conquered<\/p>\n
but we see in verses 12 to 14. that it's<\/p>\n
because they have been attracted like a<\/p>\n
magnet by the perfect Justice and<\/p>\n
compassion of this King<\/p>\n
their hearts have been melted<\/p>\n
this great king puts an end to all wars<\/p>\n
and hostility<\/p>\n
not by a military force but by<\/p>\n
righteousness Justice and compassion<\/p>\n
no earthly King has ever been like this<\/p>\n
the healing of racial Strife the<\/p>\n
elimination of poverty and Injustice<\/p>\n
these are all marks of God's Kingdom and<\/p>\n
governments even the very best ones<\/p>\n
don't come close<\/p>\n
look at the Shalom that we see here<\/p>\n
there is an image<\/p>\n
a full Harvest on tops of the hills and<\/p>\n
mountains where soil cannot support such<\/p>\n
growth look at Mount Everest look at how<\/p>\n
Majestic it is it's towering over the<\/p>\n
tree line some Majestic sight but do you<\/p>\n
think anything grows up there<\/p>\n
doesn't look like it<\/p>\n
what the psalm is saying is that under<\/p>\n
the rule of this great king even the<\/p>\n
mountaintops places that were seen as<\/p>\n
Barren and dead will be full of life and<\/p>\n
grain<\/p>\n
even the mountaintops will be covered in<\/p>\n
Lush Greenery a full Harvest<\/p>\n
this Psalm one of the things that the<\/p>\n
psalm is doing is<\/p>\n
provoking us to long for this<\/p>\n
supernaturally restored world<\/p>\n
okay so now now someone says all right<\/p>\n
this sounds great and I would love this<\/p>\n
to be true but I have one problem<\/p>\n
I don't like this King business I don't<\/p>\n
like the idea of someone else having<\/p>\n
authority over me<\/p>\n
I don't want to bow down to any King<\/p>\n
I want to be my own I am my own now this<\/p>\n
is the fundamental conviction of the<\/p>\n
human heart<\/p>\n
so George McDonald he is a Scottish<\/p>\n
Minister and author he says that the<\/p>\n
central conviction of hell is I am my<\/p>\n
own<\/p>\n
I belong to no one but me I do what I<\/p>\n
want<\/p>\n
this is the conviction that creates hell<\/p>\n
it creates a Hell in our relationships<\/p>\n
it creates a Hell in our marriage a Hell<\/p>\n
in our communities a Hell in our lives<\/p>\n
if we live this way I am my own I belong<\/p>\n
to no one but myself<\/p>\n
it creates hell in our life why why does<\/p>\n
it create hell in our life well one<\/p>\n
reason is because we're not wise or good<\/p>\n
enough to govern our own lives<\/p>\n
think just think about it our own lives<\/p>\n
over the past 10 years<\/p>\n
think about the things that we told<\/p>\n
ourselves we would never do<\/p>\n
and yeah here we are<\/p>\n
the Bible says that we hate the idea of<\/p>\n
someone who has rights over us<\/p>\n
we hate the idea of a king who says you<\/p>\n
belong to me you must do as I say you<\/p>\n
are not your own<\/p>\n
someone might say well hate hate is a<\/p>\n
strong word I don't hate God<\/p>\n
most people don't hate God<\/p>\n
well this is understandable but the<\/p>\n
Bible doesn't say we hate the concept of<\/p>\n
God<\/p>\n
the Bible says we hate the biblical God<\/p>\n
The God Who Says be holy for I am Holy<\/p>\n
The God Who Says have no other gods<\/p>\n
before me<\/p>\n
who says I created you and you belong to<\/p>\n
me<\/p>\n
who says I have to be Supreme in your<\/p>\n
life I must have<\/p>\n
total control of every dimension of your<\/p>\n
being this is the god of the Bible this<\/p>\n
is the kind of God<\/p>\n
the Bible says that people hate<\/p>\n
the Bible says that we hate the God who<\/p>\n
is King<\/p>\n
and so don't make this mistake it's not<\/p>\n
just the non-religious people someone<\/p>\n
might say okay it's the non-religious<\/p>\n
people the people who don't know God<\/p>\n
those are the people who hate God but<\/p>\n
don't make that mistake because we can<\/p>\n
be perfectly moral we can be a good<\/p>\n
person and hate God too<\/p>\n
how's that well here's a guy here's a<\/p>\n
guy who's very religious and he thinks<\/p>\n
the way to avoid Jesus is to be as good<\/p>\n
and as moral as possible<\/p>\n
many people use religion to avoid Jesus<\/p>\n
to avoid the king<\/p>\n
do you do you believe you're a pretty<\/p>\n
good person<\/p>\n
better than most<\/p>\n
that you have moral standards that<\/p>\n
you're pretty consistent with them<\/p>\n
do you feel like if God showed up and<\/p>\n
decided who he was going to accept into<\/p>\n
his kingdom that you would for sure be<\/p>\n
in<\/p>\n
or do you believe that you are such a<\/p>\n
helpless sinner that we have absolutely<\/p>\n
no hope regardless of how good we are of<\/p>\n
ever being accepted by God except for<\/p>\n
the fact that Jesus died for us<\/p>\n
that we have no hope except for the<\/p>\n
mercy of God except in Jesus Christ<\/p>\n
we can use morality to avoid Jesus to<\/p>\n
keep from being truly dependent on him<\/p>\n
to keep from truly submitting to him<\/p>\n
so whether through being religious or<\/p>\n
irreligious people avoid the king why<\/p>\n
because it challenges the central<\/p>\n
conviction that we have that we are our<\/p>\n
we are not our own the reason we need<\/p>\n
the king is because if we don't our<\/p>\n
hearts will find something else to<\/p>\n
worship<\/p>\n
we were created for the king<\/p>\n
and when we don't give ourselves to him<\/p>\n
We're violating our nature and therefore<\/p>\n
we're not living in true peace<\/p>\n
when we live as if we are our own it's<\/p>\n
like we're buying a car and the seller<\/p>\n
tells us okay you need to change the oil<\/p>\n
every 5 000 kilometers<\/p>\n
but instead of doing that we go no<\/p>\n
actually I'll change the oil when I feel<\/p>\n
like it<\/p>\n
what's going to happen you change it too<\/p>\n
often you change it or you don't change<\/p>\n
it at all it's going to break down<\/p>\n
you'll ruin the car it's only when we<\/p>\n
follow the instructions of the cars<\/p>\n
Creator does it work in harmony as it<\/p>\n
should<\/p>\n
and that's the same with us<\/p>\n
we need this King remember the kind of<\/p>\n
Kingdom that this King brings Shalom<\/p>\n
Justice compassion peace<\/p>\n
when we say we are our own when we say I<\/p>\n
am my own we're cutting ourselves off<\/p>\n
from these things<\/p>\n
it's only in bowing down to this King do<\/p>\n
we have true freedom<\/p>\n
we will Blossom if we come under this<\/p>\n
King<\/p>\n
to believe love and obey<\/p>\n
the king is to live as if we're not our<\/p>\n
own but we need the king and he's our<\/p>\n
only hope<\/p>\n
we're trying to find our way to the<\/p>\n
kingdom of peace and prosperity<\/p>\n
but the only way to do so<\/p>\n
is to submit to the king<\/p>\n
do you see that until we submit to this<\/p>\n
King until we give ourselves to him<\/p>\n
utterly and completely our hearts will<\/p>\n
never ever be truly satisfied<\/p>\n
our two deepest needs needing to feel<\/p>\n
like we count like we matter<\/p>\n
and needing to feel like we're loved and<\/p>\n
valuable to someone<\/p>\n
when we serve the king when we love the<\/p>\n
king it's only it's only then that these<\/p>\n
two needs are satisfied because there is<\/p>\n
no greater love than that of the king<\/p>\n
which brings us to our last question<\/p>\n
who is this King<\/p>\n
so it's to summarize<\/p>\n
the great king depicted here is one who<\/p>\n
brings social justice to the poor and<\/p>\n
vulnerable<\/p>\n
there is prosperity because of the deep<\/p>\n
trust amongst the people necessary<\/p>\n
for a good economy<\/p>\n
we are being pointed to a better King<\/p>\n
the best government has ever provided<\/p>\n
this great king described in the psalm<\/p>\n
puts an end to all wars and hostility<\/p>\n
righteousness Justice and compassion no<\/p>\n
earthly King has ever been like this<\/p>\n
he attracts his enemies this King<\/p>\n
attracts his enemies wins over his<\/p>\n
enemies<\/p>\n
not by military force but by Justice and<\/p>\n
compassion people who were once sworn<\/p>\n
enemies are now brought together<\/p>\n
in this King he is strong enough to<\/p>\n
deliver the people from every oppressor<\/p>\n
he's gentle and tender enough to care<\/p>\n
for the people in every trial<\/p>\n
life under this King<\/p>\n
is life how it's meant to be lived<\/p>\n
Perfect Harmony<\/p>\n
this Psalm describes this King as<\/p>\n
righteous as just<\/p>\n
he lovingly cares for his flock he's<\/p>\n
compassionate to those who are weakest<\/p>\n
and in need<\/p>\n
and his reign will bring in a<\/p>\n
supernaturally restored world that will<\/p>\n
last forever<\/p>\n
the whole world shall be blessed through<\/p>\n
him as we see in verse 17.<\/p>\n
no king of Israel has ever fit this<\/p>\n
description<\/p>\n
Solomon ushered in a golden age for<\/p>\n
Israel but even he wasn't a righteous<\/p>\n
King and neither were any of his sons<\/p>\n
one after another the Kings fell short<\/p>\n
of this prayer<\/p>\n
and then we get to the first chapter of<\/p>\n
Luke where the angel Gabriel appears to<\/p>\n
marry and says do not be afraid Mary you<\/p>\n
have fond favor with God you will<\/p>\n
conceive and give birth to a son and you<\/p>\n
are to call him Jesus he will be great<\/p>\n
and will be called son of the most high<\/p>\n
the Lord God will give him the Throne of<\/p>\n
his father David and he will reign over<\/p>\n
Jacob's descendants forever his kingdom<\/p>\n
will never end<\/p>\n
this King this great king spoken of in<\/p>\n
this psalm<\/p>\n
is none other than Jesus Christ himself<\/p>\n
God has answered the prayer of the psalm<\/p>\n
in Jesus Christ the true king<\/p>\n
the prayer that we all long for for this<\/p>\n
broken world to be made right for<\/p>\n
justice to Reign for compassion for<\/p>\n
prosperity for righteousness<\/p>\n
it's been made a reality in Jesus Christ<\/p>\n
Jesus Christ the King who attracts and<\/p>\n
wins over his people not by conquering<\/p>\n
them with the sword<\/p>\n
but by the righteousness and compassion<\/p>\n
and mercy of laying down his own life<\/p>\n
for his enemies<\/p>\n
Romans 5 says but God demonstrates his<\/p>\n
own love for us in this while we were<\/p>\n
still sinners Christ died for us<\/p>\n
since we have now been justified by his<\/p>\n
blood how much more shall we be saved<\/p>\n
from God's Wrath through him for if<\/p>\n
while we were God's enemies we were<\/p>\n
reconciled to him through the death of<\/p>\n
his son how much more having been<\/p>\n
reconciled shall we be saved through his<\/p>\n
life he is the king that we need<\/p>\n
and all we need to come to him is<\/p>\n
nothing<\/p>\n
do you have that do we have that<\/p>\n
can you lay down can we lay down all of<\/p>\n
our good works all of our righteousness<\/p>\n
all of our good deeds and morality and<\/p>\n
come to him and say Jesus apart from you<\/p>\n
I have nothing<\/p>\n
the gospel humbles us<\/p>\n
into the ground<\/p>\n
because<\/p>\n
all we can come to<\/p>\n
Jesus with is nothing<\/p>\n
but it exalts us to the skies because<\/p>\n
the Son of God the king knows all we've<\/p>\n
done and loves us enough to die for us<\/p>\n
all we need to come to Jesus is nothing<\/p>\n
do you have that<\/p>\n
Tim Keller says that to be fully known<\/p>\n
and truly loved<\/p>\n
is what it's like to be loved by God<\/p>\n
it's what we need more than anything it<\/p>\n
liberates us from the pretense and<\/p>\n
humbles us out of our self-righteousness<\/p>\n
and fortifies US strengthens us for any<\/p>\n
difficulty that life can throw at us<\/p>\n
if you aren't a Christian today<\/p>\n
don't you want this to be true<\/p>\n
to live in a kingdom where there is<\/p>\n
Justice for the poor and vulnerable<\/p>\n
where there is no more hunger and<\/p>\n
disease<\/p>\n
where our relationship to the<\/p>\n
environment is restored to have the<\/p>\n
deepest longings of our heart met don't<\/p>\n
you want it to be true if this world<\/p>\n
came into being by accident of energy<\/p>\n
and particles there's absolutely no<\/p>\n
reason to care about other people<\/p>\n
there's no need to strive to wake to<\/p>\n
make the world a better place since in<\/p>\n
the end everything is going to burn up<\/p>\n
there's no meaning<\/p>\n
but if this world was brought into<\/p>\n
existence by God<\/p>\n
and if the resurrection of Jesus Christ<\/p>\n
is true<\/p>\n
there is infinite hope for the world<\/p>\n
and there is infinite reason for us as<\/p>\n
his people to pour ourselves out for the<\/p>\n
needs of this world<\/p>\n
if you don't believe in Jesus consider<\/p>\n
exploring whether it's true the central<\/p>\n
question is Jesus who he says he is the<\/p>\n
answer to this is life-changing<\/p>\n
so lastly<\/p>\n
what does it mean to treat Jesus as king<\/p>\n
a lot of us have believed in Jesus in a<\/p>\n
general way<\/p>\n
we may have even asked Jesus for help in<\/p>\n
our lives<\/p>\n
but we can do this and not treat him as<\/p>\n
we can do this ask Jesus for help while<\/p>\n
treating him as a consultant while<\/p>\n
treating him as an advisor where Jesus<\/p>\n
can give us good advice we can pray ask<\/p>\n
you for help but at the end of the day<\/p>\n
we're going to make the decision Jesus<\/p>\n
you can tell me you can give me good<\/p>\n
advice but it's up to me I'll choose to<\/p>\n
obey you or not that's not what treating<\/p>\n
Jesus as king is if we want to treat<\/p>\n
Jesus as king one of the things that we<\/p>\n
have to do is obey<\/p>\n
we may think we're obeying<\/p>\n
we made<\/p>\n
believe we're obeying<\/p>\n
but there's a way to do that and not<\/p>\n
obey at the same time well how's that<\/p>\n
all right well what does the king say<\/p>\n
one always tell the truth always forgive<\/p>\n
don't be bitter some of us here mad at<\/p>\n
people and we won't let go we won't<\/p>\n
forgive and what that is doing is<\/p>\n
destroying us we're playing playing the<\/p>\n
tapes over and over again but that's<\/p>\n
destroying us but if we obey and forgive<\/p>\n
do you know what they'll do to you<\/p>\n
you'll be free you'll be set free seeing<\/p>\n
seeing obeying Jesus leads to freedom<\/p>\n
and shalom<\/p>\n
so first thing to treat Jesus king is to<\/p>\n
obey him whatever he says<\/p>\n
second thing what it means to treat<\/p>\n
Jesus king means to accept what he<\/p>\n
allows into our lives when we Face<\/p>\n
storms and the circumstances of our life<\/p>\n
fall apart will we still will we still<\/p>\n
treat Jesus as king then<\/p>\n
when those things happen are we able to<\/p>\n
look to Jesus and say<\/p>\n
you must know what's best<\/p>\n
and now that does not mean to just smile<\/p>\n
and say oh I'm just praising Jesus<\/p>\n
life's great and ignore our own feelings<\/p>\n
of course when suffering hits us we have<\/p>\n
to wrestle and make sense of it<\/p>\n
we have to cling to God but in those<\/p>\n
moments<\/p>\n
of suffering<\/p>\n
we look to the cross and we see Jesus<\/p>\n
because if Jesus did not abandon us in<\/p>\n
his moment of greatest suffering on the<\/p>\n
cross if you didn't abandon us then<\/p>\n
what makes us think that he will abandon<\/p>\n
us now in our suffering<\/p>\n
if he didn't abandon us on the cross he<\/p>\n
will not abandon us now he never will<\/p>\n
you can trust him we can trust his rule<\/p>\n
over our life<\/p>\n
even when it doesn't make any sense to<\/p>\n
us<\/p>\n
now finally one one last thing<\/p>\n
that it means to treat Jesus as king<\/p>\n
is the Hope<\/p>\n
see sometimes when we come to Jesus<\/p>\n
our expectations are too low<\/p>\n
he's the king we need to have<\/p>\n
expectations that are worthy of a king<\/p>\n
treating Jesus as king means having hope<\/p>\n
and expectations that things in our life<\/p>\n
can change<\/p>\n
do we treat Jesus as king or do we look<\/p>\n
at the problems in our life our habitual<\/p>\n
sins<\/p>\n
and say nothing is ever going to happen<\/p>\n
nothing can change have hope expect<\/p>\n
to treat Jesus as king means to have<\/p>\n
hope about what God can do in your life<\/p>\n
and what he can do through you<\/p>\n
the new world that King Jesus is<\/p>\n
bringing in is one that is renewed<\/p>\n
it's one where righteousness Justice<\/p>\n
compassion Mercy Harmony Prosperity is<\/p>\n
restored to the world<\/p>\n
it's a world in which there are good and<\/p>\n
healthy relationships it's a world in<\/p>\n
which there is true and Lasting peace<\/p>\n
and the King has called us the church<\/p>\n
you me everyone in this room<\/p>\n
to be a part of bringing it in and<\/p>\n
working towards this world<\/p>\n
