everybody sorry

so if anyone needs Thai translation it

is at the back with headphones so we'll

take a little bit of time

and get situated okay so can can

everybody here

PTO at the back

hands up if you can hear

okay

if you can here you might have to turn

the volume up

or change the headsets but

let's get started so hello everybody

Happy New Year hope your weeks have been

good

um it is of course New Year which means

that we are about around that time where

we need to start getting used to putting

in two zero two three into our phones

and planners instead of 2022.

we're also in a time of reflection and

New Beginnings

because many of us choose to begin new

practices and habits at the beginning of

the year

some of us may choose to exercise more

make better choices with food better

financial decisions

hoping to read the Bible in one year

others of us might hope to spend more

time with family and friends work on

bettering relationships being able to

forgive more being more generous setting

better boundaries

and so on and so forth

but what these New Year resolutions tell

us is that we all wish for a better

world

for ourselves for those around us

we want certain things in our life to

change

we want to get further away from

suffering

and closer to satisfaction

so imagine a world

where everyone prospers where there is

no suffering no pain

imagine a world where Justice is

administered rightly

where there is no hunger or disease

where people live at Harmony with the

environment

a world where there is true and Lasting

peace

is such a world possible

this is the world described in our psalm

for today we're continuing our Series in

the Psalms so we're going to look at

five Psalms beginning at 71 and

finishing at 75 and so today we're

looking at psalm 72.

so let me read to us the words of the

psalm

endow the king with your Justice o God

the royal son with your righteousness

may he judge your people in

righteousness your afflicted ones with

Justice

May the mountains bring prosperity to

the people the hills the fruit of

righteousness

may he defend The Afflicted among the

people and save the children of the

needy may he crush the oppressor

may he endure as long as the sun as long

as the moon through all generations

may he be like rain

falling on a Moen lawn like showers

watering the Earth

in his days May the righteous flourish

and prosperity abound till the Moon is

no more may he rule from sea to Sea and

from the river to the ends of the Earth

May the desert tribes bow before him and

his enemies lick the Dust

made the kings of tarshish and of

Distant Shores bring tribute to him

May the kings of Sheba and seba present

him gifts may all Kings bow down to him

and all nations serve him for he will

deliver the needy who cry out The

Afflicted who have no one to help

he will take pity on the week and the

needy and save the needy from death he

will rescue them from oppression and

violence for precious is their blood and

his sight

long may he live May Gold from Sheba be

given him may people ever pray for him

and bless him all day long

May green abounds throughout the land on

the tops of the hills May its way

May the crops flourish like Lebanon and

Thrive like grass of the field

may his name endure forever may it

continue as long as the sun then our

Nations will be blessed through him and

they will call him blessed

praise be to the Lord God

the god of Israel who alone does

marvelous Deeds

praise be to his glorious name forever

May the whole earth be filled with his

glory amen and amen

this concludes the prayers of David Son

of Jesse

Psalm 72 the psalm is a coronation psalm

and if we read it carefully we'll see

that it has to do with the coronation of

a king to the throne of Israel

and so when it was written when the

psalm was written it was meant to be

read as a prayer for the king

when Solomon was crowned and certainly

when other descendants of David were

crowned

because the psalm is a prayer asking

that God's king would reign in

to Reign justly and wisely and for the

people of God to be blessed

and so this is how we can read the psalm

on one level

but if we read this word this Psalm

carefully

we'll see that no earthly King could

ever hold the weight of the Glorious

words in the Sun

no earthly King could do justice to the

High Calling of the Sun

so while this can be read as a prayer

for Israel's King

it describes and it points to God's

ideal King

and so when we read the psalm we learn

we learn a lot but we're going to look

at three things today we're going to

learn one what this king is like

two why we need this King

and three who this King is

so

what is God's ideal King like

what are his attributes and his

qualities what marks his character

these are some of the questions that the

psalm answers

and so one thing that's interesting

is how many ancient legends in all of

our cultures go like this they go like

this there was once a great king who

ruled with wisdom and Justice and power

and compassion

and therefore when the king ruled when

the King was in power the land and the

people experienced prosperity and

blessing

everyone blossomed and we all reached

our potential the land is in its golden

age

but something happens something has

taken the king away and everything falls

into decay

but

they look forward to the day when the

king will come back and make everything

this is this is a theme that's in

stories from all over the world uh just

one modern example where we see this

theme is in the modern Legend the Lord

of the Rings where there is a true king

but he's hidden

and when he shows up he'll make

everything okay

so a question we can ask is why why do

all these Legends why do all these

legends exist when the actual human

record of Kings is actually terrible

there have been very very few human

Kings in history that have been good

Kings

the actual record of Kings throughout

history is tyranny corruption

exploitation

slavery and so in most places in the

world the form of monarchy

has been toppled and replaced with some

kind of democracy

in spite of that though in spite of the

fact that

there's such a terrible record of Kings

throughout history why is there such a

Fascination in these Legends

with this kind of King

why do these Legends have such powerful

impact on us

why is it that we create Kings

why do we take actors and actresses and

music artists and groups like blackpink

and BTS and turn them into Kings

we crowned them we adore them they have

influence over us

why is there this need for Kings

all Christians we know that democracy is

medicine it's not food and we can't live

on medicine

and the reason we have democracy is

because human beings are so sinful that

none of us are actually fit to rule

but we need a king we were built for a

king the reason for all these legends

about Kings the reason we adore and

create Kings is because we were made for

a king one who rules with

righteousness compassion Justice and

Glory

we were made to give ourselves to submit

to adore that King and this is what the

Bible says that there is a king So

Glorious shining brighter than the sun

so that even the greatest Earthly kings

are just a shadow of the ideal King that

the psalm speaks about

and the Bible says if we reject this

true king

we will find a king because we have to

we can't reject our innate desire for a

king and so even if we reject the true

king even if we say oh Christianity

isn't true it's a fairy tale even if we

say that we will find someone to adore

we will find a savior whether it's a

K-pop Idol a leader or someone who comes

in and sweeps us off our feet

romantically or even ourselves

we need a king and so what's being

described in our psalm for today is the

and so we see

in verses one to seven that Israel's

hope

was for a righteous King a perfectly

righteous King and that this king would

judge

in righteousness with Justice perfectly

injustices would be corrected properly

Israel's Hope was for a righteous King

who would bring Justice

who would make things right

so that there would be no more wrongs

in verses 3 to 7 is confident that life

under such a king would be

extraordinarily good

it says in verse 3 May the mountains

bring prosperity to the people the hills

the fruit of righteousness

and then in verse 7

says in his days May the righteous

flourish and prosperity abound till the

Moon is no more

so the word Prosperity here is actually

one of the most famous words in Hebrew

it's shalom

which means peace well-being

it means

all things as it should be the world

when it's functioning rightly

and the fruit of righteousness when

there is perfect and complete

righteousness and goodness the

expectation is that the people Prosper

the righteous flourish there is peace

there is Shalom

and so life under this king is life how

it's meant to be lived in Perfect

Harmony

we also see that this king's rule is

compassionate so verse 4 may he defend

The Afflicted among the people and save

the children of the needy may he crush

the oppressor

and so we see that this King rules with

Justice and righteousness and he comes

to the rescue of The Afflicted and the

needy

so he's not only a military protector

he's also compassionate to those who are

weakest and in need

so in this we see a king who is the

perfect combination of justice and

compassion

strong enough to deliver the people from

every oppressor gentle and tender enough

to care for the people in every trial

not only so we see in verses five to

seven that this king's Reign is endless

says his Reign endures as long as the

sun through all generations so this King

will rule forever

now is that just hyperbole is that just

exaggeration

well all of us know that no earthly King

could live forever

but God's ideal king that's described

here does

God's ideal King is on the throne

forever

there is no end to his righteous and

just rain verse 6 says this king is like

rain falling on a moon field like

showers watering the Earth

because of this king's righteous

judgment on the land the people will

flourish Prosperity will abound

it's an image of abundant crops being

watered

in short

there is no end to the shalom

and prosperity

of people who live under this King

what's even more verses 8 to 11 show us

that this king's Reign is universal

God's King rules to the ends of the

Earth

the righteous rule of justice and

compassion is extended to the whole

so certainly this was hyperbole when

read of Israelite Kings

but when read in light of God's true

ideal King it's not an exaggeration at

all

God's ideal King

is one whose rule makes everything okay

one who puts things right again

God's ideal King brings about

restoration and healing

and it says may all Kings bow to him and

all nations serve him

isn't that amazing the races and the

Nations always at war with one another

are now offering themselves in service

to this King they are bowing down and

serving this King

and so here we see another

definitive difference between this great

king

and the Kings the leaders of the world

because how do the kings of the world

expand their Kingdom by military

conquest by fighting Wars and

overwhelming Nations around them would

force and so when that happened what

usually happens the people and nation

that is conquered usually end up having

great resentment towards their captors

because they never wanted to be

conquered in the first place

but here why do the nations of the world

worship and offer themselves in service

to this great king

it's not because they have been

conquered

but we see in verses 12 to 14. that it's

because they have been attracted like a

magnet by the perfect Justice and

compassion of this King

their hearts have been melted

this great king puts an end to all wars

and hostility

not by a military force but by

righteousness Justice and compassion

no earthly King has ever been like this

the healing of racial Strife the

elimination of poverty and Injustice

these are all marks of God's Kingdom and

governments even the very best ones

don't come close

look at the Shalom that we see here

there is an image

a full Harvest on tops of the hills and

mountains where soil cannot support such

growth look at Mount Everest look at how

Majestic it is it's towering over the

tree line some Majestic sight but do you

think anything grows up there

doesn't look like it

what the psalm is saying is that under

the rule of this great king even the

mountaintops places that were seen as

Barren and dead will be full of life and

grain

even the mountaintops will be covered in

Lush Greenery a full Harvest

this Psalm one of the things that the

psalm is doing is

provoking us to long for this

supernaturally restored world

okay so now now someone says all right

this sounds great and I would love this

to be true but I have one problem

I don't like this King business I don't

like the idea of someone else having

authority over me

I don't want to bow down to any King

I want to be my own I am my own now this

is the fundamental conviction of the

human heart

so George McDonald he is a Scottish

Minister and author he says that the

central conviction of hell is I am my

own

I belong to no one but me I do what I

want

this is the conviction that creates hell

it creates a Hell in our relationships

it creates a Hell in our marriage a Hell

in our communities a Hell in our lives

if we live this way I am my own I belong

to no one but myself

it creates hell in our life why why does

it create hell in our life well one

reason is because we're not wise or good

enough to govern our own lives

think just think about it our own lives

over the past 10 years

think about the things that we told

ourselves we would never do

and yeah here we are

the Bible says that we hate the idea of

someone who has rights over us

we hate the idea of a king who says you

belong to me you must do as I say you

are not your own

someone might say well hate hate is a

strong word I don't hate God

most people don't hate God

well this is understandable but the

Bible doesn't say we hate the concept of

God

the Bible says we hate the biblical God

The God Who Says be holy for I am Holy

The God Who Says have no other gods

before me

who says I created you and you belong to

me

who says I have to be Supreme in your

life I must have

total control of every dimension of your

being this is the god of the Bible this

is the kind of God

the Bible says that people hate

the Bible says that we hate the God who

is King

and so don't make this mistake it's not

just the non-religious people someone

might say okay it's the non-religious

people the people who don't know God

those are the people who hate God but

don't make that mistake because we can

be perfectly moral we can be a good

person and hate God too

how's that well here's a guy here's a

guy who's very religious and he thinks

the way to avoid Jesus is to be as good

and as moral as possible

many people use religion to avoid Jesus

to avoid the king

do you do you believe you're a pretty

good person

better than most

that you have moral standards that

you're pretty consistent with them

do you feel like if God showed up and

decided who he was going to accept into

his kingdom that you would for sure be

in

or do you believe that you are such a

helpless sinner that we have absolutely

no hope regardless of how good we are of

ever being accepted by God except for

the fact that Jesus died for us

that we have no hope except for the

mercy of God except in Jesus Christ

we can use morality to avoid Jesus to

keep from being truly dependent on him

to keep from truly submitting to him

so whether through being religious or

irreligious people avoid the king why

because it challenges the central

conviction that we have that we are our

we are not our own the reason we need

the king is because if we don't our

hearts will find something else to

worship

we were created for the king

and when we don't give ourselves to him

We're violating our nature and therefore

we're not living in true peace

when we live as if we are our own it's

like we're buying a car and the seller

tells us okay you need to change the oil

every 5 000 kilometers

but instead of doing that we go no

actually I'll change the oil when I feel

like it

what's going to happen you change it too

often you change it or you don't change

it at all it's going to break down

you'll ruin the car it's only when we

follow the instructions of the cars

Creator does it work in harmony as it

should

and that's the same with us

we need this King remember the kind of

Kingdom that this King brings Shalom

Justice compassion peace

when we say we are our own when we say I

am my own we're cutting ourselves off

from these things

it's only in bowing down to this King do

we have true freedom

we will Blossom if we come under this

King

to believe love and obey

the king is to live as if we're not our

own but we need the king and he's our

only hope

we're trying to find our way to the

kingdom of peace and prosperity

but the only way to do so

is to submit to the king

do you see that until we submit to this

King until we give ourselves to him

utterly and completely our hearts will

never ever be truly satisfied

our two deepest needs needing to feel

like we count like we matter

and needing to feel like we're loved and

valuable to someone

when we serve the king when we love the

king it's only it's only then that these

two needs are satisfied because there is

no greater love than that of the king

which brings us to our last question

who is this King

so it's to summarize

the great king depicted here is one who

brings social justice to the poor and

vulnerable

there is prosperity because of the deep

trust amongst the people necessary

for a good economy

we are being pointed to a better King

the best government has ever provided

this great king described in the psalm

puts an end to all wars and hostility

righteousness Justice and compassion no

earthly King has ever been like this

he attracts his enemies this King

attracts his enemies wins over his

enemies

not by military force but by Justice and

compassion people who were once sworn

enemies are now brought together

in this King he is strong enough to

deliver the people from every oppressor

he's gentle and tender enough to care

for the people in every trial

life under this King

is life how it's meant to be lived

Perfect Harmony

this Psalm describes this King as

righteous as just

he lovingly cares for his flock he's

compassionate to those who are weakest

and in need

and his reign will bring in a

supernaturally restored world that will

last forever

the whole world shall be blessed through

him as we see in verse 17.

no king of Israel has ever fit this

description

Solomon ushered in a golden age for

Israel but even he wasn't a righteous

King and neither were any of his sons

one after another the Kings fell short

of this prayer

and then we get to the first chapter of

Luke where the angel Gabriel appears to

marry and says do not be afraid Mary you

have fond favor with God you will

conceive and give birth to a son and you

are to call him Jesus he will be great

and will be called son of the most high

the Lord God will give him the Throne of

his father David and he will reign over

Jacob's descendants forever his kingdom

will never end

this King this great king spoken of in

this psalm

is none other than Jesus Christ himself

God has answered the prayer of the psalm

in Jesus Christ the true king

the prayer that we all long for for this

broken world to be made right for

justice to Reign for compassion for

prosperity for righteousness

it's been made a reality in Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ the King who attracts and

wins over his people not by conquering

them with the sword

but by the righteousness and compassion

and mercy of laying down his own life

for his enemies

Romans 5 says but God demonstrates his

own love for us in this while we were

still sinners Christ died for us

since we have now been justified by his

blood how much more shall we be saved

from God's Wrath through him for if

while we were God's enemies we were

reconciled to him through the death of

his son how much more having been

reconciled shall we be saved through his

life he is the king that we need

and all we need to come to him is

nothing

do you have that do we have that

can you lay down can we lay down all of

our good works all of our righteousness

all of our good deeds and morality and

come to him and say Jesus apart from you

I have nothing

the gospel humbles us

into the ground

because

all we can come to

Jesus with is nothing

but it exalts us to the skies because

the Son of God the king knows all we've

done and loves us enough to die for us

all we need to come to Jesus is nothing

do you have that

Tim Keller says that to be fully known

and truly loved

is what it's like to be loved by God

it's what we need more than anything it

liberates us from the pretense and

humbles us out of our self-righteousness

and fortifies US strengthens us for any

difficulty that life can throw at us

if you aren't a Christian today

don't you want this to be true

to live in a kingdom where there is

Justice for the poor and vulnerable

where there is no more hunger and

disease

where our relationship to the

environment is restored to have the

deepest longings of our heart met don't

you want it to be true if this world

came into being by accident of energy

and particles there's absolutely no

reason to care about other people

there's no need to strive to wake to

make the world a better place since in

the end everything is going to burn up

there's no meaning

but if this world was brought into

existence by God

and if the resurrection of Jesus Christ

is true

there is infinite hope for the world

and there is infinite reason for us as

his people to pour ourselves out for the

needs of this world

if you don't believe in Jesus consider

exploring whether it's true the central

question is Jesus who he says he is the

answer to this is life-changing

so lastly

what does it mean to treat Jesus as king

a lot of us have believed in Jesus in a

general way

we may have even asked Jesus for help in

our lives

but we can do this and not treat him as

we can do this ask Jesus for help while

treating him as a consultant while

treating him as an advisor where Jesus

can give us good advice we can pray ask

you for help but at the end of the day

we're going to make the decision Jesus

you can tell me you can give me good

advice but it's up to me I'll choose to

obey you or not that's not what treating

Jesus as king is if we want to treat

Jesus as king one of the things that we

have to do is obey

we may think we're obeying

we made

believe we're obeying

but there's a way to do that and not

obey at the same time well how's that

all right well what does the king say

one always tell the truth always forgive

don't be bitter some of us here mad at

people and we won't let go we won't

forgive and what that is doing is

destroying us we're playing playing the

tapes over and over again but that's

destroying us but if we obey and forgive

do you know what they'll do to you

you'll be free you'll be set free seeing

seeing obeying Jesus leads to freedom

and shalom

so first thing to treat Jesus king is to

obey him whatever he says

second thing what it means to treat

Jesus king means to accept what he

allows into our lives when we Face

storms and the circumstances of our life

fall apart will we still will we still

treat Jesus as king then

when those things happen are we able to

look to Jesus and say

you must know what's best

and now that does not mean to just smile

and say oh I'm just praising Jesus

life's great and ignore our own feelings

of course when suffering hits us we have

to wrestle and make sense of it

we have to cling to God but in those

moments

of suffering

we look to the cross and we see Jesus

because if Jesus did not abandon us in

his moment of greatest suffering on the

cross if you didn't abandon us then

what makes us think that he will abandon

us now in our suffering

if he didn't abandon us on the cross he

will not abandon us now he never will

you can trust him we can trust his rule

over our life

even when it doesn't make any sense to

us

now finally one one last thing

that it means to treat Jesus as king

is the Hope

see sometimes when we come to Jesus

our expectations are too low

he's the king we need to have

expectations that are worthy of a king

treating Jesus as king means having hope

and expectations that things in our life

can change

do we treat Jesus as king or do we look

at the problems in our life our habitual

sins

and say nothing is ever going to happen

nothing can change have hope expect

to treat Jesus as king means to have

hope about what God can do in your life

and what he can do through you

the new world that King Jesus is

bringing in is one that is renewed

it's one where righteousness Justice

compassion Mercy Harmony Prosperity is

restored to the world

it's a world in which there are good and

healthy relationships it's a world in

which there is true and Lasting peace

and the King has called us the church

you me everyone in this room

to be a part of bringing it in and

working towards this world

thank you

sum ends with benediction

praise be to the Lord God the god of

Israel who alone does marvelous Deeds

praise be to this glorious name forever

glory

amen and amen this concludes the prayers

of David's son of Jesse let's pray

Lord you sweet we thank you

for the fact that you are the true king

Lord we thank you for the ways that you

have extended mercy and Grace to us even

moments where we've been most unlovable

or we pray that you would transform us

through your grace

Lord meet us in the ways that we need to

be met

Lord help us to submit

to you as king help us to look to the

cross and see that you are trustworthy

Lord would you

Lord would you conquer us not by might

Lord but by the power you love Lord

would you melt our hearts
