we'll be looking at the supremacy

of the Lord God looking at his glory in

Psalm 74 so if you if you have your

Bibles you can turn with me and follow

on

just for a little bit of background for

this Psalm Israel was God's chosen

people that had a special relationship

with God during the Old Testament God

had told them several times in in

several different ways I will be your

God and you will be my people

he promised to make them into a great

nation he promised to be present with

them in a special way he promised to

protect them from their enemies to make

them a blessing to the Nations around

them

and in Psalm 74 Israel is experiencing

one of if not the most catastrophic time

in their history as a nation

the temple was destroyed which means god

is no longer making his presence known

to Israel in a special way

there is no prophet in the land which

was one of God's ways of communicating

with the people

there's an enemy in the land so God is

not providing the protection that he

told Israel that he was going to provide

for them

and so Israel is in a horrible and a

horrifying situation

to use an expression that we commonly

use in the states Israel has hit rock

model

life doesn't get worse than this

so Israel was experiencing a form of

Hell on Earth

I want to look at three things that our

text communicates to us this morning

uh the first is that is that God cares

supremely about his glory and so should

we

the second is that we need to be

delivered from our enemy who tries to

steal God's glory

and the third is that we need to Hope in

the Lord to Deliver Us from the enemy

and so let me pray for us as we look at

God's word this morning

I dear heavenly father we thank you so

much for your word we thank you for how

it guides us we thank you for how it

teaches us about you I pray that you

will use this Psalm to to teach us more

about your greatness to teach us more

about your glory and to teach us more

about what you've done for us in Jesus

and I pray all this in Jesus name amen

oh God

why do you cast us all forever

why does your anger smoke against the

Sheep of your pastor remember your

congregation which you have purchased of

old

but you have redeemed to be the tribe of

your heritage

remember Mount Zion where you have dwelt

direct your steps to the Perpetual ruins

the enemy has destroyed everything in

the sanctuary

your foes your foes have roared in the

midst of your meeting place they set up

their own signs for signs

they were like those who swing axes in a

forest of trees and all its carved wood

they broke down with hatchets and

hammers

they set your Sanctuary on fire they

profane the dwelling place of your name

bringing it down to the ground

they said to themselves we will utterly

subdue them they burned all the meeting

places of God in the land we do not see

your signs there is no longer any profit

and there is none Among Us who knows how

long

how long ago God is the faux disc golf

is the enemy to revile your name forever

why do you hold back your hand your

right hand take it out from the fold of

your garment and Destroy them

yet God my king is from of old

working salvation in the midst of the

Earth

you divided the Sea by your might you

broke the heads of the sea monsters on

the waters you crushed the heads of

Leviathan you gave him his food for the

creatures of the wilderness

you split open Springs and Brooks you

dried up ever flowing streams yours is a

day yours also the night

you've established the Heavenly lights

and Sun you have fixed all the

boundaries of the earth you have made

summer and winter

remember this O Lord how the enemy

scoffs and a foolish people reviles your

name

do not deliver the soul of your Dove to

the wild beast

do not forget the life of your poor

forever

have regard for the Covenant for the

dark places of the land are full of the

inhabitations of violence

let not the downtrod and turn back in

shame let the poor and needy praise your

arise o God defend your cause remember

how the foolish scoff at you all the day

do not forget the clamor of your foes

the Uproar of those who rise against you

which goes up continually

and so let's look first at

how God cares supremely about his glory

and how we should care about his glory

let's look at how God views himself

if someone were to ask you

why God does what he does how would you

answer him

why did God create the world why did God

create people why did God send his son

into the world to redeem sinful people

scripture reveals in several places that

the overarching reason that God does it

all

is to display his glory

to show how great and awesome he is

God put the stars in the sky to display

his glory

to show that he is a wonderful designer

everything that comes from God

from creation to Redemption and on is

displaying the glory of God

and so there's nothing greater than God

there's nothing more worthy than God

and so there is nothing that deserves

our attention and the world's attention

more than God

this means that God therefore must be

concerned with protecting his glory from

those who attack it

we see God's concern for his glory and

verses 1 and verse 19.

verse 1 says oh God why do you cast us

all forever why does your anger smoke

against the Sheep of your pastor

verse 19 do not deliver the soul of your

Dove to the wild beast do not forget the

life of your poor forever

and so the psalmist rightly makes the

connection between God's anger and

Israel's circumstances

because God is angry with the nation of

Israel that they are experiencing these

tough circumstances that they are in

the reason for God's displeasure with

them is not mentioned in our text but we

see it clearly in Deuteronomy 28-30

the book of Deuteronomy is like an

interpretive key for how to understand

the shape that Israel is in right now

God made a covenant with Israel he

promised blessings if they obeyed that

Covenant and he promised curses if they

did not obey the Covenant and they broke

the Covenant

so let's take a look at a few of these

blessings and a few of these curses

in Deuteronomy 28

1-14 we see God's blessings

verse 1 and Deuteronomy 28 it says and

if you Faithfully obey the voice of the

Lord your God being careful to do all

his Commandments that I command you

today

the Lord your God will set you high

above all of the Nations on the Earth

and in verse 7 it says the Lord will

cause your enemies who rise against you

to be defeated before you

they shall come out against you one way

and flee before you seven ways

and so if Israel is obedient to the

Covenant then God will provide

protection from for Israel from their

enemies

God will defeat their enemies for them

and then come the curses in verses 15

through 68.

uh we see the curses that they will

receive for disobedience in verse 15 it

says but if you will not obey the voice

voice of the Lord your God or be careful

to do all his Commandments and his

statutes that I command you today

then all these curses shall come upon

you and overtake you

verse 25 the Lord will cause you to be

defeated before your enemies you shall

go out one way against them and flee

seven ways before them

and then verse verses 45 through 46 all

these curses shall come upon you and

pursue you and overtake you till you are

destroyed

because you did not obey the voice of

the Lord your God to keep his

Commandments and his statues that he

commanded you they shall be a sign and a

wander against you in your offspring

and so the consequences of the curse of

Israel's disobedience is the opposite of

blessing

instead of God providing protection he

will allow Israel's enemies to overtake

and so what is going on in Psalm 74 is a

result of Israel receiving the curses of

the Covenant because of their

disobedience

the reason the Lord called Israel to

himself was to display his glory just

the same way he made mankind he made us

in His image to be image bearers

in the earth and that's what he created

that's what he made Israel for Israel

was to be holy as God is Holy so that

they could show the world how perfect

how righteous and how awesome that God

is

God gave them a sacrificial system for

when they were not holy and disobeyed

God's law

the sins of Israel resulted in the death

of an animal

and so this was done to show Israel and

the world that sin and attack on God's

glory is serious is serious business

and so if we look at the history of

Israel we see that instead of being a

holy nation to those that they were

around that became just like the Nations

they acted just like them they worshiped

the same Idols the same Gods as they

worship

Israel's religious leaders Israel's

priests they didn't offer sacrifices

rightly

they were God special people who were

called for a special task

and they failed at this

they did not display God's glory to

those that they were around

and it is in this failure as a nation to

glorify God that God is angry with them

and so we see that God's glory is his

Supreme concern

and so we'll also see that God's glory

should be our Supreme concern

he created us for this purpose he

created Israel for himself for this

purpose and he made them into a nation

for this purpose

and so our Supreme concern in life it

should be to glorify God

there's nothing greater that we can

devote Our Lives to or that we should

devote Our Lives to than seeing God

glorified

we see the psalmist concerned for God's

glory in three ways in the text

the first is that God's glory is the

basis for the psalmist appeal the

psalmists appealed to God to deliver

them from their enemy is based on a

concern for God's glory

he is showing God all the ways the enemy

is attacking his glory

in verse 7 it says they set your

Sanctuary on fire they profane the

dwelling place of your name

verse 10 is the enemy to revile your

name forever

and then Verse 18 a foolish people

reviles your name

verse 22 arise o God defend your cause

remember how the foolish scoff at you

all the day

verse 23 the Uproar of those who rise

against you which goes up continually

and so the psalmist is saying an enemy

is attacking your people God an enemy

has destroyed your Sanctuary an enemy is

mocking your name

the enemy is not bringing glory to you

he's intentionally doing things that try

to take away from your glory he is

openly mocking you and trying to make

you little

in verse 22 the psalmist challenges God

to defend his cause

we've already mentioned that God's calls

for Israel is to make his name great

among the Nations through him

and so the psalmist is saying our enemy

is trying to make you look like a

weakling do something about our enemy

for your name's sake for your own Glory

whenever you see someone attack

um someone that you know that you love

that you care about that you admire

that you respect you you feel for them

I think this is especially true for your

own children I've seen Macy made fun of

at the playground and even though it's

children making fun of other children

it's still I mean you still feel that I

think especially

whenever that child is your child

there's something whenever that happens

inside of me that says don't do that

there's this protective anger in me that

says She's Mine treat her with respect

I don't say it to these little children

but in my heart of hearts that that's

what I'm thinking

whenever I first came to Thailand in the

fall of 2010

King Brahma 9 was the king and several

of the missionaries here told me do not

say anything bad about the king because

ties love and respect the king and they

will be very offended if you say

something about the king

they told me ties usually don't get

upset easily but if you want to see a

tie get angry with you then say

something bad about their King

and so we should feel this same

righteous in this same protective anger

for an attack on God's glory that we

feel whenever we see our loved ones or

someone that we admire attacked

this is the same type of anger that we

see the psalmist display here in verse

11 when he says why do you hold back

your hand your right hand

take it from the fold of your garment

and Destroy them

the psalmist again shows concern for

God's glory and what he says right after

he lists the ways that the enemy has

mocked God

what does he do he responds to the

enemy's actions of trying to take away

from the glory of God by giving a list

in verses 12-17 of all of the ways that

God has proven himself powerful and

glorious

how does the psalmist begin in this

response in verse 12 he says yet

my God my king

and so what the psalmist is saying here

is he's saying the enemy has tried to

disprove you God he's trying to disprove

disprove Your Glory

in what he has done here

but that's not so God I know it's not so

because I've seen your glory I Know Your

Glory

and so he lists all the things that God

has done as his great king as his

deliverer

and verse 13 He says you divided the Sea

by your mind

and so whenever God was bringing his

people

to the promised land whenever he was

bringing them out of Egypt the Egyptians

were chasing them and what happened

it was something that was blocking them

the Red Sea and so what did God do he

Parts it

and so God shows himself powerful and

glorious by showing himself as Israel's

rescuer right here

and in verse 14 it says you crush the

heads of Leviathan

so Leviathan was a an ancient

mythological sea creature

and it was used here to represent Egypt

and it shows that God rescued his people

from the oppressive Egyptians

in verse 15 it says you split open

Springs and Brooks you dried up ever

flowing streams

and so God delivered the people whenever

they were wandering through the

Wilderness he delivered them from thirst

he brought water from a rock

and he also dried up a section of the

Jordan River to provide a way for them

to get across to the promised land

and then in verses 16 through 17 we see

that the psalmist speaks of God's glory

here

yours is the day yours also the night

you have established the Heavenly lies

and the son you have fixed all the

and so the psalmist is saying here God

you are God of creation you are awesome

in all of these ways you have proven

yourself awesome you are my king

and so we should fill this

awesomeness of God whenever we look at

creation wherever we think about his

acts of redemption

we see also in verse 21 the next way

that the psalmist

points to God's glory

in verse 21 he says let not the downtrod

and turn back

in shame let the poor and needy praise

your name

and so for the psalmist the liverus

means that he can praise the name of the

Lord

he can glorify God

the end goal for the psalmist is to get

back to the way that things were so that

he can once again enjoy the presence of

the Lord and he can praise the lord's

and so God is our infinitely glorious

King he is our creator he is Our

Redeemer

we should desire to see him honored and

glorified in our lives and in the lives

of those around us

so what if we don't desire for the glory

of God above all else

what can we do to get there

what we can do is what we see the

psalmists do here we can spend time

meditating on God as our creator and Our

Redeemer think of the wonderful ways

that he has redeemed and delivered us

from our sins through Jesus

and look at his power and Glory we

display it we see displayed in creation

this is what the psalmist is doing here

so now that we've looked at God's

concern for his glory and we've looked

at our need to be concerned for God's

glory let's look at our need to be

rescued from our enemy who tries to keep

us from glorifying the Lord

what is the enemy's goal what is

Israel's enemy doing in psalm 74. the

enemy has torn down the temple the

temple was where God made his presence

known to Israel in a special way

the enemy has torn down all the things

that represent God to the people

and the enemy has replaced them with his

own signs

he did this with the purpose of showing

his power over God

and so he is also verbally mocking God's

name God's name represents who God is it

represents his character and so whenever

the enemy attacks God's name he is

attacking God's character and he is

trying to diminish God's worth in the

eyes of Israelites

and so the enemy's goal here is to

prevent God's people from seeing God's

glory and praising him

how did Satan tempt Adam and Eve in the

garden

he said for God knows that when you eat

of it your eyes will be opened and you

will be like God

knowing Good and Evil

and so Satan tempted Adam and Eve by

appealing to their pride when he says

you will be like God he is saying you

are not good the way you are but if you

eat of this fruit you will have great

wisdom and you will be like God you will

be glorious like God by possessing the

great wisdom that he does

and he tempted them to want to think of

themselves as having God's glory

and so Satan's main objective Evil's

main objective is always and will always

be to attack God's glory he wants to

keep us from fulfilling the purpose that

God has created us for which is to

glorify him

so what is our need

at verse 1 the psalmist says oh God why

do you cast us off forever

and the psalmist expresses that he feels

like God has abandoned them he's not

saying that God has cast them off

forever but he is saying this is how I

feel God I look around at the land I

don't see your presence I don't see any

signs of you I feel like you have

abandoned this

why does the psalmist feel this way

he is experiencing separation from God

and it feels like an eternity for him

and I can't think of anyone who has

experienced a worse situation on Earth

other than Jesus At The Cross

to have known the the presence and the

pleasure of God and have that taken away

from you

they're experiencing a taste of what

hell is like on Earth

second Thessalonians 1 9-10

it says it's talking about

separation of God's children and those

who are not God's children it says they

will suffer the punishment of Eternal

destruction away from the presence of

the Lord and from the glory of his might

when he comes on that day to be

glorified in his Saints and to be

marveled at among all who have believed

and so we're just told a little about a

bit about heaven and hell here the worst

part of Hell will be being away from the

presence of the Lord of not being able

to enjoy God of not being able to see

his glory of not being able to feel his

warmth

and the best part of heaven will be

glorifying God of being able to Marvel

at Christ to see Christ and all of his

glory that we can take in and to be able

to experience that that will be heaven

and so why did God allow Israel to go

through such a difficult and painful

time why did he allow Israel to

experience a form of Hell on Earth by

being away from the glory of the Lord

I've been reading a book on parenting

called a shepherding a child's heart by

Ted Tripp

and he says that the ultimate goal of

parenting and discipleship is to show

your children that they are sinners

that there is an enemy Within them that

they can't take care of themselves

and point them to the Cross where God

does it for them

and so this is the most loving thing

that parents can do for their children

it's not buying them toys at Christmas

it's not telling them how good they are

it's about telling them that they are a

sinner in need of a savior

than it is to show children that they

are sinners and thus fall short of the

glory of God their lives don't point to

God they don't reflect God's goodness

they don't reflect his glory like they

need to and they should

and so they are in need of a savior and

so Israel's main problem was not the

physical enemy that was occupying their

land the one that had torn down all the

places of God and had desecrated the

sanctuary

the physical enemy in the land pointed

to the evil and the spiritual enemy that

was in their hearts

it is a corrupt heart that constantly

desires to do things that attack God's

glory

that is their ultimate problem and their

true enemy

they're constantly attacking the glory

of God and they need to be rescued from

their own sinful Hearts if not they

would keep on ending up in the same

situation they're in right now

and so the psalm would have been a

reminder to Israel of how offensive

their sin was to God and how it was

attacked on God's glory when they read

it we would have pointed them to their

need for a deliverer their need for God

to deliver them from their physical

enemy but also in that way it pointed to

God's their need for God to deliver them

from their spiritual enemy

and so God like a Good Shepherd was

using Israel's experience of Hell on

so that they might be saved from eternal

hell

God is showing them and us this is what

will take place if I don't care take

care of the Enemy Within you

what has taken place to you as a

nation-state will happen to you

personally and for all of eternity if I

do not take care of your enemy you must

look to me to deliver you

this Psalm is an appeal to the Lord to

act and deliver Israel from their enemy

where does the psalmist places hope

for the Lord to do this

the psalmist ends the appeal to the Lord

by asking the Lord to deliver them based

on the Covenant promises God had made to

Israel and a concern for his glory

in verse 20

the psalmist says have regard for your

Covenant O Lord

we saw earlier from Deuteronomy 28 that

the Lord made a covenant and he promised

to bless Israel if they obeyed the

Covenant and he promised to send curses

upon them if they didn't

God also made a provision for when

Israel ended up receiving the curses of

he knew that the people would disobey

him and so he made a provision for that

then Deuteronomy

31-7 we read

and when all these things come upon you

the blessing and the curse which I have

set before you and call them to mine

among all the nations where the Lord

your God has driven you

and return to the Lord your God you and

your children and obey his voice in all

that I command you today with all your

heart and with all your soul then the

Lord your God will restore your fortunes

and have compassion on you and he will

gather you again from all the peoples

with the Lord your God has scattered you

if you're Outcast or in the uttermost

parts of Heaven from there the Lord your

God will gather you

and from there he will take you

and the Lord your God will bring you

into the land that your fathers

possessed that you may possess it and he

will make you more prosperous and

numerous than your fathers and the Lord

your God will circumcise your heart

in the heart of your offspring

so that you will love the Lord your God

with all your heart and with all your

soul that you may live

and the Lord your God will put all these

curses on your foes and enemies who

persecuted you

and so the psalmist is calling upon the

Lord to remember his Covenant to

remember the provision that he has made

for his people when they experience the

curse of the Covenant

if Israel returns to the Lord and obeys

the commands of the Covenant then God

will curse their enemies and put all the

curses they have experienced on their

not only that the promise is that God

will circumcise their hearts he will

transform their hearts so that they will

love the Lord

that's their problem

God will take care of the Enemy Within

and the Lord's concern for his glory

we see the second reason that there is

hope or deliverance from our enemy

in verses 22 through 24 it says arise oh

God defend your calls remember how the

foolish scoff at you all the day do not

forget the clamor of your foes the

Uproar of those who rise against you

and so as we looked at earlier the cause

of the Lord was to use Israel to make

his name known among the Nations to

bring him glory and so the psalmist is

calling upon the Lord to destroy the

enemy who is mocking God so that Israel

could be a light to the Nations so that

they could be what they were supposed to

be

Israel had great reason to hope that God

would deliver them because of his

Covenant promises

and a passion to see Israel display his

and it lift left them looking forward to

the coming of Christ when God would

accomplish everything needed to deliver

his people from evil

the great news is that God has delivered

Israel and us from our enemy Within

the Deliverance that they were looking

for and we are looking for God has

accomplished for us in Christ

Colossians 2 13-15 tells us

and you were dead in your transpasses

trespasses

in the uncircumcision of your flesh

God Made Alive together with him having

forgiven us all of our trespasses by

canceling the record of debt that stood

against us with its legal demands this

he set aside nailing it to the cross

he disarmed the rulers and authorities

and put them to open Shame by triumphing

over them

in him

and so God's Fierce anger that we see

displayed in Psalm 74 against Israel was

poured out upon Christ at the cross

God has taken care of all the attacks

that our heart has on him in Jesus

he is put to shame and disarmed the

enemy that is in our hearts

and he has given us new cards for his

glory and so Christ has made a way for

God to transform our hearts and the here

and now so that we can live for his

glory and one day he will bring to

completion the good work that he has

started in US

let's pray and thank him for this

dear heavenly father I thank you so much

for your word I thank you that it is

powerful I thank you that it works in

our hearts and our minds it drives us to

worship you

I pray that you were honored in the

preaching of your word this morning and

I pray that it brought you much Glory

I pray that you will continue to teach

us more about your passion for your

glory I pray that you will continue to

work in our hearts and our minds

I desire to see you glorified in us and

in those around us that is what you

created us for

thank you for providing a way to Deliver

us from our enemy you have Jesus you

have defeated Satan at the cross he no

longer has a stronghold over us and one

day you will make us completely new so

that we can enjoy your glory forever for

all of eternity

I pray that you will remind us of that

as we go throughout this week remind us

of our need to be glorifying you I pray

that you will help us to do that well

dear Lord and I pray that whenever we do

not do that with our lives I pray that

we will turn to you and look to Jesus

and to cast ourselves upon him and in

doing that we will bring you glory

we pray all this in Jesus name amen

","":
Grace
