today we'll be looking at the supremacy<\/p>\n
of the Lord God looking at his glory in<\/p>\n
Psalm 74 so if you if you have your<\/p>\n
Bibles you can turn with me and follow<\/p>\n
on<\/p>\n
just for a little bit of background for<\/p>\n
this Psalm Israel was God's chosen<\/p>\n
people that had a special relationship<\/p>\n
with God during the Old Testament God<\/p>\n
had told them several times in in<\/p>\n
several different ways I will be your<\/p>\n
God and you will be my people<\/p>\n
he promised to make them into a great<\/p>\n
nation he promised to be present with<\/p>\n
them in a special way he promised to<\/p>\n
protect them from their enemies to make<\/p>\n
them a blessing to the Nations around<\/p>\n
them<\/p>\n
and in Psalm 74 Israel is experiencing<\/p>\n
one of if not the most catastrophic time<\/p>\n
in their history as a nation<\/p>\n
the temple was destroyed which means god<\/p>\n
is no longer making his presence known<\/p>\n
to Israel in a special way<\/p>\n
there is no prophet in the land which<\/p>\n
was one of God's ways of communicating<\/p>\n
with the people<\/p>\n
there's an enemy in the land so God is<\/p>\n
not providing the protection that he<\/p>\n
told Israel that he was going to provide<\/p>\n
for them<\/p>\n
and so Israel is in a horrible and a<\/p>\n
horrifying situation<\/p>\n
to use an expression that we commonly<\/p>\n
use in the states Israel has hit rock<\/p>\n
model<\/p>\n
life doesn't get worse than this<\/p>\n
so Israel was experiencing a form of<\/p>\n
Hell on Earth<\/p>\n
I want to look at three things that our<\/p>\n
text communicates to us this morning<\/p>\n
uh the first is that is that God cares<\/p>\n
supremely about his glory and so should<\/p>\n
we<\/p>\n
the second is that we need to be<\/p>\n
delivered from our enemy who tries to<\/p>\n
steal God's glory<\/p>\n
and the third is that we need to Hope in<\/p>\n
the Lord to Deliver Us from the enemy<\/p>\n
and so let me pray for us as we look at<\/p>\n
God's word this morning<\/p>\n
I dear heavenly father we thank you so<\/p>\n
much for your word we thank you for how<\/p>\n
it guides us we thank you for how it<\/p>\n
teaches us about you I pray that you<\/p>\n
will use this Psalm to to teach us more<\/p>\n
about your greatness to teach us more<\/p>\n
about your glory and to teach us more<\/p>\n
about what you've done for us in Jesus<\/p>\n
and I pray all this in Jesus name amen<\/p>\n
oh God<\/p>\n
why do you cast us all forever<\/p>\n
why does your anger smoke against the<\/p>\n
Sheep of your pastor remember your<\/p>\n
congregation which you have purchased of<\/p>\n
old<\/p>\n
but you have redeemed to be the tribe of<\/p>\n
your heritage<\/p>\n
remember Mount Zion where you have dwelt<\/p>\n
direct your steps to the Perpetual ruins<\/p>\n
the enemy has destroyed everything in<\/p>\n
the sanctuary<\/p>\n
your foes your foes have roared in the<\/p>\n
midst of your meeting place they set up<\/p>\n
their own signs for signs<\/p>\n
they were like those who swing axes in a<\/p>\n
forest of trees and all its carved wood<\/p>\n
they broke down with hatchets and<\/p>\n
hammers<\/p>\n
they set your Sanctuary on fire they<\/p>\n
profane the dwelling place of your name<\/p>\n
bringing it down to the ground<\/p>\n
they said to themselves we will utterly<\/p>\n
subdue them they burned all the meeting<\/p>\n
places of God in the land we do not see<\/p>\n
your signs there is no longer any profit<\/p>\n
and there is none Among Us who knows how<\/p>\n
long<\/p>\n
how long ago God is the faux disc golf<\/p>\n
is the enemy to revile your name forever<\/p>\n
why do you hold back your hand your<\/p>\n
right hand take it out from the fold of<\/p>\n
your garment and Destroy them<\/p>\n
yet God my king is from of old<\/p>\n
working salvation in the midst of the<\/p>\n
Earth<\/p>\n
you divided the Sea by your might you<\/p>\n
broke the heads of the sea monsters on<\/p>\n
the waters you crushed the heads of<\/p>\n
Leviathan you gave him his food for the<\/p>\n
creatures of the wilderness<\/p>\n
you split open Springs and Brooks you<\/p>\n
dried up ever flowing streams yours is a<\/p>\n
day yours also the night<\/p>\n
you've established the Heavenly lights<\/p>\n
and Sun you have fixed all the<\/p>\n
boundaries of the earth you have made<\/p>\n
summer and winter<\/p>\n
remember this O Lord how the enemy<\/p>\n
scoffs and a foolish people reviles your<\/p>\n
name<\/p>\n
do not deliver the soul of your Dove to<\/p>\n
the wild beast<\/p>\n
do not forget the life of your poor<\/p>\n
forever<\/p>\n
have regard for the Covenant for the<\/p>\n
dark places of the land are full of the<\/p>\n
inhabitations of violence<\/p>\n
let not the downtrod and turn back in<\/p>\n
shame let the poor and needy praise your<\/p>\n
arise o God defend your cause remember<\/p>\n
how the foolish scoff at you all the day<\/p>\n
do not forget the clamor of your foes<\/p>\n
the Uproar of those who rise against you<\/p>\n
which goes up continually<\/p>\n
and so let's look first at<\/p>\n
how God cares supremely about his glory<\/p>\n
and how we should care about his glory<\/p>\n
let's look at how God views himself<\/p>\n
if someone were to ask you<\/p>\n
why God does what he does how would you<\/p>\n
answer him<\/p>\n
why did God create the world why did God<\/p>\n
create people why did God send his son<\/p>\n
into the world to redeem sinful people<\/p>\n
scripture reveals in several places that<\/p>\n
the overarching reason that God does it<\/p>\n
all<\/p>\n
is to display his glory<\/p>\n
to show how great and awesome he is<\/p>\n
God put the stars in the sky to display<\/p>\n
his glory<\/p>\n
to show that he is a wonderful designer<\/p>\n
everything that comes from God<\/p>\n
from creation to Redemption and on is<\/p>\n
displaying the glory of God<\/p>\n
and so there's nothing greater than God<\/p>\n
there's nothing more worthy than God<\/p>\n
and so there is nothing that deserves<\/p>\n
our attention and the world's attention<\/p>\n
more than God<\/p>\n
this means that God therefore must be<\/p>\n
concerned with protecting his glory from<\/p>\n
those who attack it<\/p>\n
we see God's concern for his glory and<\/p>\n
verses 1 and verse 19.<\/p>\n
verse 1 says oh God why do you cast us<\/p>\n
all forever why does your anger smoke<\/p>\n
against the Sheep of your pastor<\/p>\n
verse 19 do not deliver the soul of your<\/p>\n
Dove to the wild beast do not forget the<\/p>\n
life of your poor forever<\/p>\n
and so the psalmist rightly makes the<\/p>\n
connection between God's anger and<\/p>\n
Israel's circumstances<\/p>\n
because God is angry with the nation of<\/p>\n
Israel that they are experiencing these<\/p>\n
tough circumstances that they are in<\/p>\n
the reason for God's displeasure with<\/p>\n
them is not mentioned in our text but we<\/p>\n
see it clearly in Deuteronomy 28-30<\/p>\n
the book of Deuteronomy is like an<\/p>\n
interpretive key for how to understand<\/p>\n
the shape that Israel is in right now<\/p>\n
God made a covenant with Israel he<\/p>\n
promised blessings if they obeyed that<\/p>\n
Covenant and he promised curses if they<\/p>\n
did not obey the Covenant and they broke<\/p>\n
the Covenant<\/p>\n
so let's take a look at a few of these<\/p>\n
blessings and a few of these curses<\/p>\n
in Deuteronomy 28<\/p>\n
1-14 we see God's blessings<\/p>\n
verse 1 and Deuteronomy 28 it says and<\/p>\n
if you Faithfully obey the voice of the<\/p>\n
Lord your God being careful to do all<\/p>\n
his Commandments that I command you<\/p>\n
today<\/p>\n
the Lord your God will set you high<\/p>\n
above all of the Nations on the Earth<\/p>\n
and in verse 7 it says the Lord will<\/p>\n
cause your enemies who rise against you<\/p>\n
to be defeated before you<\/p>\n
they shall come out against you one way<\/p>\n
and flee before you seven ways<\/p>\n
and so if Israel is obedient to the<\/p>\n
Covenant then God will provide<\/p>\n
protection from for Israel from their<\/p>\n
enemies<\/p>\n
God will defeat their enemies for them<\/p>\n
and then come the curses in verses 15<\/p>\n
through 68.<\/p>\n
uh we see the curses that they will<\/p>\n
receive for disobedience in verse 15 it<\/p>\n
says but if you will not obey the voice<\/p>\n
voice of the Lord your God or be careful<\/p>\n
to do all his Commandments and his<\/p>\n
statutes that I command you today<\/p>\n
then all these curses shall come upon<\/p>\n
you and overtake you<\/p>\n
verse 25 the Lord will cause you to be<\/p>\n
defeated before your enemies you shall<\/p>\n
go out one way against them and flee<\/p>\n
seven ways before them<\/p>\n
and then verse verses 45 through 46 all<\/p>\n
these curses shall come upon you and<\/p>\n
pursue you and overtake you till you are<\/p>\n
destroyed<\/p>\n
because you did not obey the voice of<\/p>\n
the Lord your God to keep his<\/p>\n
Commandments and his statues that he<\/p>\n
commanded you they shall be a sign and a<\/p>\n
wander against you in your offspring<\/p>\n
and so the consequences of the curse of<\/p>\n
Israel's disobedience is the opposite of<\/p>\n
blessing<\/p>\n
instead of God providing protection he<\/p>\n
will allow Israel's enemies to overtake<\/p>\n
and so what is going on in Psalm 74 is a<\/p>\n
result of Israel receiving the curses of<\/p>\n
the Covenant because of their<\/p>\n
disobedience<\/p>\n
the reason the Lord called Israel to<\/p>\n
himself was to display his glory just<\/p>\n
the same way he made mankind he made us<\/p>\n
in His image to be image bearers<\/p>\n
in the earth and that's what he created<\/p>\n
that's what he made Israel for Israel<\/p>\n
was to be holy as God is Holy so that<\/p>\n
they could show the world how perfect<\/p>\n
how righteous and how awesome that God<\/p>\n
is<\/p>\n
God gave them a sacrificial system for<\/p>\n
when they were not holy and disobeyed<\/p>\n
God's law<\/p>\n
the sins of Israel resulted in the death<\/p>\n
of an animal<\/p>\n
and so this was done to show Israel and<\/p>\n
the world that sin and attack on God's<\/p>\n
glory is serious is serious business<\/p>\n
and so if we look at the history of<\/p>\n
Israel we see that instead of being a<\/p>\n
holy nation to those that they were<\/p>\n
around that became just like the Nations<\/p>\n
they acted just like them they worshiped<\/p>\n
the same Idols the same Gods as they<\/p>\n
worship<\/p>\n
Israel's religious leaders Israel's<\/p>\n
priests they didn't offer sacrifices<\/p>\n
rightly<\/p>\n
they were God special people who were<\/p>\n
called for a special task<\/p>\n
and they failed at this<\/p>\n
they did not display God's glory to<\/p>\n
those that they were around<\/p>\n
and it is in this failure as a nation to<\/p>\n
glorify God that God is angry with them<\/p>\n
and so we see that God's glory is his<\/p>\n
Supreme concern<\/p>\n
and so we'll also see that God's glory<\/p>\n
should be our Supreme concern<\/p>\n
he created us for this purpose he<\/p>\n
created Israel for himself for this<\/p>\n
purpose and he made them into a nation<\/p>\n
for this purpose<\/p>\n
and so our Supreme concern in life it<\/p>\n
should be to glorify God<\/p>\n
there's nothing greater that we can<\/p>\n
devote Our Lives to or that we should<\/p>\n
devote Our Lives to than seeing God<\/p>\n
glorified<\/p>\n
we see the psalmist concerned for God's<\/p>\n
glory in three ways in the text<\/p>\n
the first is that God's glory is the<\/p>\n
basis for the psalmist appeal the<\/p>\n
psalmists appealed to God to deliver<\/p>\n
them from their enemy is based on a<\/p>\n
concern for God's glory<\/p>\n
he is showing God all the ways the enemy<\/p>\n
is attacking his glory<\/p>\n
in verse 7 it says they set your<\/p>\n
Sanctuary on fire they profane the<\/p>\n
dwelling place of your name<\/p>\n
verse 10 is the enemy to revile your<\/p>\n
name forever<\/p>\n
and then Verse 18 a foolish people<\/p>\n
reviles your name<\/p>\n
verse 22 arise o God defend your cause<\/p>\n
remember how the foolish scoff at you<\/p>\n
all the day<\/p>\n
verse 23 the Uproar of those who rise<\/p>\n
against you which goes up continually<\/p>\n
and so the psalmist is saying an enemy<\/p>\n
is attacking your people God an enemy<\/p>\n
has destroyed your Sanctuary an enemy is<\/p>\n
mocking your name<\/p>\n
the enemy is not bringing glory to you<\/p>\n
he's intentionally doing things that try<\/p>\n
to take away from your glory he is<\/p>\n
openly mocking you and trying to make<\/p>\n
you little<\/p>\n
in verse 22 the psalmist challenges God<\/p>\n
to defend his cause<\/p>\n
we've already mentioned that God's calls<\/p>\n
for Israel is to make his name great<\/p>\n
among the Nations through him<\/p>\n
and so the psalmist is saying our enemy<\/p>\n
is trying to make you look like a<\/p>\n
weakling do something about our enemy<\/p>\n
for your name's sake for your own Glory<\/p>\n
whenever you see someone attack<\/p>\n
um someone that you know that you love<\/p>\n
that you care about that you admire<\/p>\n
that you respect you you feel for them<\/p>\n
I think this is especially true for your<\/p>\n
own children I've seen Macy made fun of<\/p>\n
at the playground and even though it's<\/p>\n
children making fun of other children<\/p>\n
it's still I mean you still feel that I<\/p>\n
think especially<\/p>\n
whenever that child is your child<\/p>\n
there's something whenever that happens<\/p>\n
inside of me that says don't do that<\/p>\n
there's this protective anger in me that<\/p>\n
says She's Mine treat her with respect<\/p>\n
I don't say it to these little children<\/p>\n
but in my heart of hearts that that's<\/p>\n
what I'm thinking<\/p>\n
whenever I first came to Thailand in the<\/p>\n
fall of 2010<\/p>\n
King Brahma 9 was the king and several<\/p>\n
of the missionaries here told me do not<\/p>\n
say anything bad about the king because<\/p>\n
ties love and respect the king and they<\/p>\n
will be very offended if you say<\/p>\n
something about the king<\/p>\n
they told me ties usually don't get<\/p>\n
upset easily but if you want to see a<\/p>\n
tie get angry with you then say<\/p>\n
something bad about their King<\/p>\n
and so we should feel this same<\/p>\n
righteous in this same protective anger<\/p>\n
for an attack on God's glory that we<\/p>\n
feel whenever we see our loved ones or<\/p>\n
someone that we admire attacked<\/p>\n
this is the same type of anger that we<\/p>\n
see the psalmist display here in verse<\/p>\n
11 when he says why do you hold back<\/p>\n
your hand your right hand<\/p>\n
take it from the fold of your garment<\/p>\n
and Destroy them<\/p>\n
the psalmist again shows concern for<\/p>\n
God's glory and what he says right after<\/p>\n
he lists the ways that the enemy has<\/p>\n
mocked God<\/p>\n
what does he do he responds to the<\/p>\n
enemy's actions of trying to take away<\/p>\n
from the glory of God by giving a list<\/p>\n
in verses 12-17 of all of the ways that<\/p>\n
God has proven himself powerful and<\/p>\n
glorious<\/p>\n
how does the psalmist begin in this<\/p>\n
response in verse 12 he says yet<\/p>\n
my God my king<\/p>\n
and so what the psalmist is saying here<\/p>\n
is he's saying the enemy has tried to<\/p>\n
disprove you God he's trying to disprove<\/p>\n
disprove Your Glory<\/p>\n
in what he has done here<\/p>\n
but that's not so God I know it's not so<\/p>\n
because I've seen your glory I Know Your<\/p>\n
Glory<\/p>\n
and so he lists all the things that God<\/p>\n
has done as his great king as his<\/p>\n
deliverer<\/p>\n
and verse 13 He says you divided the Sea<\/p>\n
by your mind<\/p>\n
and so whenever God was bringing his<\/p>\n
people<\/p>\n
to the promised land whenever he was<\/p>\n
bringing them out of Egypt the Egyptians<\/p>\n
were chasing them and what happened<\/p>\n
it was something that was blocking them<\/p>\n
the Red Sea and so what did God do he<\/p>\n
Parts it<\/p>\n
and so God shows himself powerful and<\/p>\n
glorious by showing himself as Israel's<\/p>\n
rescuer right here<\/p>\n
and in verse 14 it says you crush the<\/p>\n
heads of Leviathan<\/p>\n
so Leviathan was a an ancient<\/p>\n
mythological sea creature<\/p>\n
and it was used here to represent Egypt<\/p>\n
and it shows that God rescued his people<\/p>\n
from the oppressive Egyptians<\/p>\n
in verse 15 it says you split open<\/p>\n
Springs and Brooks you dried up ever<\/p>\n
flowing streams<\/p>\n
and so God delivered the people whenever<\/p>\n
they were wandering through the<\/p>\n
Wilderness he delivered them from thirst<\/p>\n
he brought water from a rock<\/p>\n
and he also dried up a section of the<\/p>\n
Jordan River to provide a way for them<\/p>\n
to get across to the promised land<\/p>\n
and then in verses 16 through 17 we see<\/p>\n
that the psalmist speaks of God's glory<\/p>\n
here<\/p>\n
yours is the day yours also the night<\/p>\n
you have established the Heavenly lies<\/p>\n
and the son you have fixed all the<\/p>\n
and so the psalmist is saying here God<\/p>\n
you are God of creation you are awesome<\/p>\n
in all of these ways you have proven<\/p>\n
yourself awesome you are my king<\/p>\n
and so we should fill this<\/p>\n
awesomeness of God whenever we look at<\/p>\n
creation wherever we think about his<\/p>\n
acts of redemption<\/p>\n
we see also in verse 21 the next way<\/p>\n
that the psalmist<\/p>\n
points to God's glory<\/p>\n
in verse 21 he says let not the downtrod<\/p>\n
and turn back<\/p>\n
in shame let the poor and needy praise<\/p>\n
your name<\/p>\n
and so for the psalmist the liverus<\/p>\n
means that he can praise the name of the<\/p>\n
Lord<\/p>\n
he can glorify God<\/p>\n
the end goal for the psalmist is to get<\/p>\n
back to the way that things were so that<\/p>\n
he can once again enjoy the presence of<\/p>\n
the Lord and he can praise the lord's<\/p>\n
and so God is our infinitely glorious<\/p>\n
King he is our creator he is Our<\/p>\n
Redeemer<\/p>\n
we should desire to see him honored and<\/p>\n
glorified in our lives and in the lives<\/p>\n
of those around us<\/p>\n
so what if we don't desire for the glory<\/p>\n
of God above all else<\/p>\n
what can we do to get there<\/p>\n
what we can do is what we see the<\/p>\n
psalmists do here we can spend time<\/p>\n
meditating on God as our creator and Our<\/p>\n
Redeemer think of the wonderful ways<\/p>\n
that he has redeemed and delivered us<\/p>\n
from our sins through Jesus<\/p>\n
and look at his power and Glory we<\/p>\n
display it we see displayed in creation<\/p>\n
this is what the psalmist is doing here<\/p>\n
so now that we've looked at God's<\/p>\n
concern for his glory and we've looked<\/p>\n
at our need to be concerned for God's<\/p>\n
glory let's look at our need to be<\/p>\n
rescued from our enemy who tries to keep<\/p>\n
us from glorifying the Lord<\/p>\n
what is the enemy's goal what is<\/p>\n
Israel's enemy doing in psalm 74. the<\/p>\n
enemy has torn down the temple the<\/p>\n
temple was where God made his presence<\/p>\n
known to Israel in a special way<\/p>\n
the enemy has torn down all the things<\/p>\n
that represent God to the people<\/p>\n
and the enemy has replaced them with his<\/p>\n
own signs<\/p>\n
he did this with the purpose of showing<\/p>\n
his power over God<\/p>\n
and so he is also verbally mocking God's<\/p>\n
name God's name represents who God is it<\/p>\n
represents his character and so whenever<\/p>\n
the enemy attacks God's name he is<\/p>\n
attacking God's character and he is<\/p>\n
trying to diminish God's worth in the<\/p>\n
eyes of Israelites<\/p>\n
and so the enemy's goal here is to<\/p>\n
prevent God's people from seeing God's<\/p>\n
glory and praising him<\/p>\n
how did Satan tempt Adam and Eve in the<\/p>\n
garden<\/p>\n
he said for God knows that when you eat<\/p>\n
of it your eyes will be opened and you<\/p>\n
will be like God<\/p>\n
knowing Good and Evil<\/p>\n
and so Satan tempted Adam and Eve by<\/p>\n
appealing to their pride when he says<\/p>\n
you will be like God he is saying you<\/p>\n
are not good the way you are but if you<\/p>\n
eat of this fruit you will have great<\/p>\n
wisdom and you will be like God you will<\/p>\n
be glorious like God by possessing the<\/p>\n
great wisdom that he does<\/p>\n
and he tempted them to want to think of<\/p>\n
themselves as having God's glory<\/p>\n
and so Satan's main objective Evil's<\/p>\n
main objective is always and will always<\/p>\n
be to attack God's glory he wants to<\/p>\n
keep us from fulfilling the purpose that<\/p>\n
God has created us for which is to<\/p>\n
glorify him<\/p>\n
so what is our need<\/p>\n
at verse 1 the psalmist says oh God why<\/p>\n
do you cast us off forever<\/p>\n
and the psalmist expresses that he feels<\/p>\n
like God has abandoned them he's not<\/p>\n
saying that God has cast them off<\/p>\n
forever but he is saying this is how I<\/p>\n
feel God I look around at the land I<\/p>\n
don't see your presence I don't see any<\/p>\n
signs of you I feel like you have<\/p>\n
abandoned this<\/p>\n
why does the psalmist feel this way<\/p>\n
he is experiencing separation from God<\/p>\n
and it feels like an eternity for him<\/p>\n
and I can't think of anyone who has<\/p>\n
experienced a worse situation on Earth<\/p>\n
other than Jesus At The Cross<\/p>\n
to have known the the presence and the<\/p>\n
pleasure of God and have that taken away<\/p>\n
from you<\/p>\n
they're experiencing a taste of what<\/p>\n
hell is like on Earth<\/p>\n
second Thessalonians 1 9-10<\/p>\n
it says it's talking about<\/p>\n
separation of God's children and those<\/p>\n
who are not God's children it says they<\/p>\n
will suffer the punishment of Eternal<\/p>\n
destruction away from the presence of<\/p>\n
the Lord and from the glory of his might<\/p>\n
when he comes on that day to be<\/p>\n
glorified in his Saints and to be<\/p>\n
marveled at among all who have believed<\/p>\n
and so we're just told a little about a<\/p>\n
bit about heaven and hell here the worst<\/p>\n
part of Hell will be being away from the<\/p>\n
presence of the Lord of not being able<\/p>\n
to enjoy God of not being able to see<\/p>\n
his glory of not being able to feel his<\/p>\n
warmth<\/p>\n
and the best part of heaven will be<\/p>\n
glorifying God of being able to Marvel<\/p>\n
at Christ to see Christ and all of his<\/p>\n
glory that we can take in and to be able<\/p>\n
to experience that that will be heaven<\/p>\n
and so why did God allow Israel to go<\/p>\n
through such a difficult and painful<\/p>\n
time why did he allow Israel to<\/p>\n
experience a form of Hell on Earth by<\/p>\n
being away from the glory of the Lord<\/p>\n
I've been reading a book on parenting<\/p>\n
called a shepherding a child's heart by<\/p>\n
Ted Tripp<\/p>\n
and he says that the ultimate goal of<\/p>\n
parenting and discipleship is to show<\/p>\n
your children that they are sinners<\/p>\n
that there is an enemy Within them that<\/p>\n
they can't take care of themselves<\/p>\n
and point them to the Cross where God<\/p>\n
does it for them<\/p>\n
and so this is the most loving thing<\/p>\n
that parents can do for their children<\/p>\n
it's not buying them toys at Christmas<\/p>\n
it's not telling them how good they are<\/p>\n
it's about telling them that they are a<\/p>\n
sinner in need of a savior<\/p>\n
than it is to show children that they<\/p>\n
are sinners and thus fall short of the<\/p>\n
glory of God their lives don't point to<\/p>\n
God they don't reflect God's goodness<\/p>\n
they don't reflect his glory like they<\/p>\n
need to and they should<\/p>\n
and so they are in need of a savior and<\/p>\n
so Israel's main problem was not the<\/p>\n
physical enemy that was occupying their<\/p>\n
land the one that had torn down all the<\/p>\n
places of God and had desecrated the<\/p>\n
sanctuary<\/p>\n
the physical enemy in the land pointed<\/p>\n
to the evil and the spiritual enemy that<\/p>\n
was in their hearts<\/p>\n
it is a corrupt heart that constantly<\/p>\n
desires to do things that attack God's<\/p>\n
glory<\/p>\n
that is their ultimate problem and their<\/p>\n
true enemy<\/p>\n
they're constantly attacking the glory<\/p>\n
of God and they need to be rescued from<\/p>\n
their own sinful Hearts if not they<\/p>\n
would keep on ending up in the same<\/p>\n
situation they're in right now<\/p>\n
and so the psalm would have been a<\/p>\n
reminder to Israel of how offensive<\/p>\n
their sin was to God and how it was<\/p>\n
attacked on God's glory when they read<\/p>\n
it we would have pointed them to their<\/p>\n
need for a deliverer their need for God<\/p>\n
to deliver them from their physical<\/p>\n
enemy but also in that way it pointed to<\/p>\n
God's their need for God to deliver them<\/p>\n
from their spiritual enemy<\/p>\n
and so God like a Good Shepherd was<\/p>\n
using Israel's experience of Hell on<\/p>\n
so that they might be saved from eternal<\/p>\n
hell<\/p>\n
God is showing them and us this is what<\/p>\n
will take place if I don't care take<\/p>\n
care of the Enemy Within you<\/p>\n
what has taken place to you as a<\/p>\n
nation-state will happen to you<\/p>\n
personally and for all of eternity if I<\/p>\n
do not take care of your enemy you must<\/p>\n
look to me to deliver you<\/p>\n
this Psalm is an appeal to the Lord to<\/p>\n
act and deliver Israel from their enemy<\/p>\n
where does the psalmist places hope<\/p>\n
for the Lord to do this<\/p>\n
the psalmist ends the appeal to the Lord<\/p>\n
by asking the Lord to deliver them based<\/p>\n
on the Covenant promises God had made to<\/p>\n
Israel and a concern for his glory<\/p>\n
in verse 20<\/p>\n
the psalmist says have regard for your<\/p>\n
Covenant O Lord<\/p>\n
we saw earlier from Deuteronomy 28 that<\/p>\n
the Lord made a covenant and he promised<\/p>\n
to bless Israel if they obeyed the<\/p>\n
Covenant and he promised to send curses<\/p>\n
upon them if they didn't<\/p>\n
God also made a provision for when<\/p>\n
Israel ended up receiving the curses of<\/p>\n
he knew that the people would disobey<\/p>\n
him and so he made a provision for that<\/p>\n
then Deuteronomy<\/p>\n
31-7 we read<\/p>\n
and when all these things come upon you<\/p>\n
the blessing and the curse which I have<\/p>\n
set before you and call them to mine<\/p>\n
among all the nations where the Lord<\/p>\n
your God has driven you<\/p>\n
and return to the Lord your God you and<\/p>\n
your children and obey his voice in all<\/p>\n
that I command you today with all your<\/p>\n
heart and with all your soul then the<\/p>\n
Lord your God will restore your fortunes<\/p>\n
and have compassion on you and he will<\/p>\n
gather you again from all the peoples<\/p>\n
with the Lord your God has scattered you<\/p>\n
if you're Outcast or in the uttermost<\/p>\n
parts of Heaven from there the Lord your<\/p>\n
God will gather you<\/p>\n
and from there he will take you<\/p>\n
and the Lord your God will bring you<\/p>\n
into the land that your fathers<\/p>\n
possessed that you may possess it and he<\/p>\n
will make you more prosperous and<\/p>\n
numerous than your fathers and the Lord<\/p>\n
your God will circumcise your heart<\/p>\n
in the heart of your offspring<\/p>\n
so that you will love the Lord your God<\/p>\n
with all your heart and with all your<\/p>\n
soul that you may live<\/p>\n
and the Lord your God will put all these<\/p>\n
curses on your foes and enemies who<\/p>\n
persecuted you<\/p>\n
and so the psalmist is calling upon the<\/p>\n
Lord to remember his Covenant to<\/p>\n
remember the provision that he has made<\/p>\n
for his people when they experience the<\/p>\n
curse of the Covenant<\/p>\n
if Israel returns to the Lord and obeys<\/p>\n
the commands of the Covenant then God<\/p>\n
will curse their enemies and put all the<\/p>\n
curses they have experienced on their<\/p>\n
not only that the promise is that God<\/p>\n
will circumcise their hearts he will<\/p>\n
transform their hearts so that they will<\/p>\n
love the Lord<\/p>\n
that's their problem<\/p>\n
God will take care of the Enemy Within<\/p>\n
and the Lord's concern for his glory<\/p>\n
we see the second reason that there is<\/p>\n
hope or deliverance from our enemy<\/p>\n
in verses 22 through 24 it says arise oh<\/p>\n
God defend your calls remember how the<\/p>\n
foolish scoff at you all the day do not<\/p>\n
forget the clamor of your foes the<\/p>\n
Uproar of those who rise against you<\/p>\n
and so as we looked at earlier the cause<\/p>\n
of the Lord was to use Israel to make<\/p>\n
his name known among the Nations to<\/p>\n
bring him glory and so the psalmist is<\/p>\n
calling upon the Lord to destroy the<\/p>\n
enemy who is mocking God so that Israel<\/p>\n
could be a light to the Nations so that<\/p>\n
they could be what they were supposed to<\/p>\n
be<\/p>\n
Israel had great reason to hope that God<\/p>\n
would deliver them because of his<\/p>\n
Covenant promises<\/p>\n
and a passion to see Israel display his<\/p>\n
and it lift left them looking forward to<\/p>\n
the coming of Christ when God would<\/p>\n
accomplish everything needed to deliver<\/p>\n
his people from evil<\/p>\n
the great news is that God has delivered<\/p>\n
Israel and us from our enemy Within<\/p>\n
the Deliverance that they were looking<\/p>\n
for and we are looking for God has<\/p>\n
accomplished for us in Christ<\/p>\n
Colossians 2 13-15 tells us<\/p>\n
and you were dead in your transpasses<\/p>\n
trespasses<\/p>\n
in the uncircumcision of your flesh<\/p>\n
God Made Alive together with him having<\/p>\n
forgiven us all of our trespasses by<\/p>\n
canceling the record of debt that stood<\/p>\n
against us with its legal demands this<\/p>\n
he set aside nailing it to the cross<\/p>\n
he disarmed the rulers and authorities<\/p>\n
and put them to open Shame by triumphing<\/p>\n
over them<\/p>\n
in him<\/p>\n
and so God's Fierce anger that we see<\/p>\n
displayed in Psalm 74 against Israel was<\/p>\n
poured out upon Christ at the cross<\/p>\n
God has taken care of all the attacks<\/p>\n
that our heart has on him in Jesus<\/p>\n
he is put to shame and disarmed the<\/p>\n
enemy that is in our hearts<\/p>\n
and he has given us new cards for his<\/p>\n
glory and so Christ has made a way for<\/p>\n
God to transform our hearts and the here<\/p>\n
and now so that we can live for his<\/p>\n
glory and one day he will bring to<\/p>\n
completion the good work that he has<\/p>\n
started in US<\/p>\n
let's pray and thank him for this<\/p>\n
dear heavenly father I thank you so much<\/p>\n
for your word I thank you that it is<\/p>\n
powerful I thank you that it works in<\/p>\n
our hearts and our minds it drives us to<\/p>\n
worship you<\/p>\n
I pray that you were honored in the<\/p>\n
preaching of your word this morning and<\/p>\n
I pray that it brought you much Glory<\/p>\n
I pray that you will continue to teach<\/p>\n
us more about your passion for your<\/p>\n
glory I pray that you will continue to<\/p>\n
work in our hearts and our minds<\/p>\n
I desire to see you glorified in us and<\/p>\n
in those around us that is what you<\/p>\n
created us for<\/p>\n
thank you for providing a way to Deliver<\/p>\n
us from our enemy you have Jesus you<\/p>\n
have defeated Satan at the cross he no<\/p>\n
longer has a stronghold over us and one<\/p>\n
day you will make us completely new so<\/p>\n
that we can enjoy your glory forever for<\/p>\n
all of eternity<\/p>\n
I pray that you will remind us of that<\/p>\n
as we go throughout this week remind us<\/p>\n
of our need to be glorifying you I pray<\/p>\n
that you will help us to do that well<\/p>\n
dear Lord and I pray that whenever we do<\/p>\n
not do that with our lives I pray that<\/p>\n
we will turn to you and look to Jesus<\/p>\n
and to cast ourselves upon him and in<\/p>\n
doing that we will bring you glory<\/p>\n
