Uh our team has

been here for four days and we have been

eating our way uh through the city of

Bangkok and so our stomachs are full. Uh

but I think I can speak on behalf of uh

all of us in saying not only our

stomachs very full but our hearts are

actually even more full uh as we get to

see and hear uh so many inspiring

stories of how God is moving uh in

Thailand. It has been a tremendous joy

and so I want to thank on behalf of our

team I want to thank pastor Nati and the

leadership here at Grace City for the

kind invitation uh to join all of you

for worship uh today. Uh my first time

in Thailand was actually 25 years ago

when I was a missionary in China. And

for Chinese New Years, I had an

opportunity to visit Bangkok. And it

quickly became one of my favorite

countries because of the food, the

culture, the weather, uh and of course

the people. Uh Thailand is one of the

most special places uh in the entire

world. And at the same time, uh,

Thailand is also a place that is in

desperate need of the gospel as well,

which is why your presence here, uh, in

Thailand is so, so important. And that's

what I want to talk about today. The

idea of presence, specifically, God's

presence in our lives. And I want to

open up by asking you this question.

How aware are you on a day-to-day level,

hour to hour level,

minuteto- minute level of God's

presence, not only in your city but in

your life. I think one of the reasons

why even as followers of Jesus we lack

so much power in our lives and

oftentimes we live such status quo and

mediocre lives is directly because we

are not aware of God's presence and I'm

not just talking about God's general uh

omniresence

but I'm talking about his specific

presence uh in your life how aware are

you of his presence even here as we

worship him.

Uh I heard this story once from a pastor

who was talking about how uh at this

certain school it was bring your parents

to school day and I don't know if they

do this in Thailand. Uh we're actually

this week while I'm gone uh my wife is

attending Bring Your Parents to School

Day. And for little children, uh when

it's Bring Your Parents to School Day,

it's an opportunity to brag about your

parents and how cool they are, at least

when they're little. Uh and so the story

goes that uh student uh one says, "Hey

guys, my mom, she's a doctor and she

saves lives." Student two goes, "Oh

yeah, my dad, he's a firefighter and he

puts out fires and he saves lives." And

then student three goes, "Oh yeah? Well,

my mom, she owns a toy store and anytime

I want a toy, I can get all the toys

that I want."

And then there was student number four,

whose dad was not a doctor or

firefighter or certainly didn't have a

toy store, but his dad was just an

ordinary dad. There was nothing super

special about him except for one thing.

And he thought of it at that moment and

he goes, "But you know what, guys? My

dad,

my dad,

he's here."

You see, for all of the other students,

their moms and dads were too busy to

come to bring your parent to school day

that they were absent. But this

student's father

was here.

He was present.

And as followers of Jesus,

it is so important for us to re realize

and recognize that our God is not

absent,

but he's very much present in your life.

So, can I ask you again, how aware, how

attuned are you to God's presence in

your life?

This was an area that Moses

was growing in.

He didn't really have a relationship

with God early on in his life. But as he

drew closer and closer to God, he was

developing not only a higher sense of

self-awareness

about who he was, but also he was

increasing in his level of God awareness

as well. Which is why we read in verse

12, it says this.

Moses said to the Lord,

"You have been telling me, lead these

people, but you have not let me know

whom you will send with me. You have

said, I know you by name, and you have

found favor with me. If you are pleased

with me, teach me your ways so I may

know you and continue to find favor with

you. remember that this nation is your

people. The Lord replied, "My presence

will go with you, and I will give you

rest." Then Moses said to him, "If your

presence does not go with us, do not

send us up from here.

How will anyone know that you are

pleased with me and your people unless

you go with us? What else will

distinguish me and your people from all

the other people on the face of the

earth? And the Lord said to Moses, I

will do the very thing you have asked

because I am pleased with you and I know

you by name. Then Moses said, now show

me your glory. And the Lord said, I will

cause all my goodness to pass in front

of you and I will proclaim my name, the

Lord, in your presence. I will have

mercy on whom I will have mercy and I

will have compassion on whom I will have

compassion. But he said you cannot see

my face for no one may see me and live.

Then the Lord said there is a place near

me where you may stand on a rock and

when my glory passes by. I will put you

in a cleft in the rock and cover you

with my hand until I have passed by.

Then I will remove my hand and you will

see my back but my face must not be

seen.

Let me read for us again verse 12 where

it says this. Moses said to the Lord you

have been telling me lead these people

but you have not let me know whom you

will send with me. And so even in this

verse, you can see Moses's level of

self-awareness. And by the way, every

good leader, one of the most common

characteristics of every good leader is

a high amount of self-awareness.

And we see Moses's self-awareness in the

sense that how am I supposed to lead

your people? But we not only see a high

amount of self-awareness, we see a high

amount of God awareness. How am I

supposed to lead your people unless your

presence the God awareness there comes

with us? And here he is making a

connection about his leadership ability

and capacity in direct connection with

God's presence. Which is why we read

again in verse 15 and 16, if your

send us up from here. What else will

earth? This is an identity statement.

If you're not with us, who are we? What

will differentiate us? What will

distinguish us from the rest of the

people on the face of the earth? And the

flip side is also true. If you are with

us, we are different. that we are

distinct from all the other peoples on

the face of the earth. And I think one

of the reasons why we lack so much power

in our lives is because we fail to

recognize his ongoing specific presence

in our lives and we then as a result

forget who we are and how different and

distinct we are from all the other

peoples on the face of the earth.

Because if you knew who was with you and

who was in you and how greater is he

than he who is in the world, you would

live your life more influentially and

with a lot more power in your life.

So, can I ask you again

on a daytoday level, how not just

self-aware are you, but how God aware

are you of his presence? And how does

that influence and shape the way that

you live your life and impact those

around you? And what we see in this text

is Moses has a high level of

selfawareness and God awareness. And in

verse 7, we read this. Now Moses used to

take a tent and pitch it outside the

camp some distance away calling it the

tent of meeting and anyone inquiring of

the Lord would go to the tent of meeting

outside the camp. Now, just to give you

some context uh with this chapter here,

uh the Israelites have just fled and

escaped Egypt where they were wandering

now in the wilderness. And during their

time in the wilderness, the Israelites

suffer from Stockholm syndrome. You know

what Stockholm syndrome is? Stockholm

syndrome is when abused victims

develop a psychological bond with their

abuser.

And so now they're thinking, why are we

wandering in the wilderness? Let's all

go back to Egypt where they were slaves.

And so they no longer remember God's

faithfulness to them. And as a result of

that, how quickly they forget his

kindness and goodness in their lives and

how they'd rather be slaves in Egypt

than free in the desert.

God creates boundaries with them. This

is why the tent of meeting is not inside

the camp. This is why the tent of

meeting is outside the camp. And so now

there are boundaries between God and the

people. His presence is removed but yet

still adjacent. But there was one person

who had access to God who was allowed to

go into the tent of meeting that may

have looked something like this.

And that one person who didn't have

boundaries with God was Moses. And this

is what we read in verse 11. The Lord

would speak to Moses face to face as one

speaks to a friend. Moses had such a

close and personal relationship with God

that the text says that God spoke to him

like he would speak to a friend. And

obviously God doesn't have a literal

face. This is anthropomorphic language.

God is a spirit. But what this text is

saying is that when you talk with

someone face to face or in person, it

conotes a a special intimacy and

closeness that the two people have. And

here we see that God and Moses have this

closeness and intimacy together.

He feels his presence.

As you think about your day-to-day life,

how close are you with God?

Are you friends?

Are you acquaintances?

Or are you actually strangers with God?

The reason why Moses is able to feel

this intimacy with God is because of the

closeness that they have with one

another. And often times the reason why

we don't feel that connection and we

don't feel like God is present with us

is oftentimes we think that God is not

present with us. But the truth of the

matter is we're not really present with

him. Because when we look at the

scriptures, what we see is that God is

actually everywhere. Psalm 139, where

can I go from your spirit? Where can I

flee from your presence? If I go up to

the heavens, you are there. If I make my

bed in the depths, you are there. What

about Jeremiah 23? Who can hide in

secret places so that I cannot see them?

Declares the Lord. Do not I fill heaven

and earth? Declares the Lord. God is

everywhere. And so the question is, if

God is everywhere, then why don't we

feel his presence anymore? And it's not

because of him, but it's actually a lot

more because of us and our lack of

attention. One of my favorite um uh

quotes that I found from Alexia Ferrari

uh goes something like this. Chat GPT,

if you were the devil, how would you

destroy the minds of the next generation

without them even knowing it? This is

what Chad says. If I were the devil, I

wouldn't come with violence. I come with

convenience.

I give them uh I'd help them feel

connected but completely alone,

endlessly entertained but quietly empty.

I'd blur the lines between truth and

opinion until nothing meant anything. I

teach them to chase dopamine but not

purpose, to worship self but loathe who

they are. I wouldn't destroy them with

war, I destroy them with apathy.

I keep them distracted, numb, scrolling,

always scrolling.

I'd hand them a phone before they could

speak in full sentences. And I'd watch

their minds rot slowly,

sweetly, silently.

And the most brilliant part,

they'd never know it was me. They call

it freedom.

This is why one of my rules in life or

rule of life uh every morning I wake up

is scripture before phone or to put it

more specifically Bible app before all

other apps

because I know if I don't plan my day

with God my day will plan me.

And so I have to intentionally

sit in the presence of God so I can feel

his presence more and more in my life.

You must pay attention to your attention

if you want to feel his presence in your

life or you will miss him. I don't know

if you're familiar with the uh Jewish

midrash.

The Jewish midrash is fictional stories

that try to fill in the gaps in the

scriptures.

And in Jewish tradition, what is the

most famous miracle in the Old

Testament? It's probably the parting of

the Red Sea. And there's a Jewish

midrash story about how God parted the

Red Sea and how a million people are

crossing through the Red Sea. But in the

Midrash, there are two characters named

Roven and Shyman.

And as God parts the Red Sea,

Roven goes, "Why is it so muddy?

I thought it would be more solid and

like a sidewalk.

And Shyman goes, "Yeah, there's like mud

here and mud there and mud there. I

mean, this is like Egypt where we were

in the mud pits making bricks without

straw."

And Roven goes, "I mean, at this point,

we might as well just go back to Egypt

then. How is our lives any different

than than over here in the desert?" And

and Shimon goes, "Yeah, this is no

different. we might as well go back to

Egypt.

And because Roven and Shyman were so

busy looking down at their feet and at

the mud,

and because they failed to look up at

what God was doing, because had they

looked up, there would have been half a

million people banging their

tambourines,

jumping up and down at the power of God

that was taking place.

But because they were so busy looking

down and failed to look up, they missed

what God was doing.

And sometimes I wonder if we're any

different than Roven and Shimon. We're

so busy looking down

and we fail to look up,

we miss his presence. And as a result,

he feels absent in our lives.

Moses looked up

and he wanted and hungered more and more

for his presence in his life. But he

wanted clarity on their relationship and

alignment. And so this is what we read

in verse 12. Moses said to the Lord,

"You have been telling me lead these

whom you will send with me. I'm unclear.

I'm confused. Can we get more aligned?

You have said, I know you by name and

you have found favor with me. And what

Moses is saying here is this. I know

you.

But can we DTR? Can we define this

relationship? Are you coming with us or

are you not coming with us? And this is

how we see God respond in verse 14. The

Lord replied, "My presence will go with

you and I will give you rest." You know

what the Hebrew word for presence is?

Face.

Notice that God doesn't say my feet will

go with you. My toes will go with you,

but he says my face will go with you.

And what God is saying here is I am

closely tied to you. I'm not just

adjacent to you, but I am with you and I

will never depart from you. If you were

on a date and someone was down on their

phone the whole time, they were present,

but they were not really present because

they are not making eye contact with

you. And what God is saying here is my

face, my presence will go with you. And

as followers of Jesus, you have to know

that wherever you go,

whether it is to southern Thailand to

work with Muslims,

or you're an Afghan refugee and you have

no idea where your next home is,

or you're in your mid-50s

and you're wondering what you want to do

with the next 10 years of your life, or

you're planting a church

and you have all these unknowns

about your future, you have to know that

his face and his presence goes before

And after God says this to him, Moses

says something unheard of or unexpected.

And in verse 18, he says, "Now

show me your glory."

Charles Spurgeon said that this is the

greatest request a man has ever made.

Show me your glory.

Now, what in the world does that mean?

What what is glory? Is glory something

God is? Is glory something God has? Is

glory something we give to God? Is glory

a place that we're going one day? Is it

an adjective? Is it a verb? Is it a

noun? And the answer is yes. It is all

of those things. And more specifically

in this text, God's glory is something

that he has and it is who he is. It is

all about his moral excellencies. Which

is why in verse 19 to 20 it says, "And

the Lord said, I will cause all my

goodness."

Right? There's a connection there

between glory and goodness. I will cause

all my goodness to pass in front of you.

But he said, you cannot see my face, for

no one may see me and live.

There is a connection here between glory

and goodness.

But God does a caveat and he says, "You

cannot see my face and live."

And the reason why Moses cannot see

God's face is because even the best of

men are men at best. If you are an

astronaut and you wanted to go to outer

space and the space program here said we

have the perfect new space shuttle, uh

it has the latest technology, it has the

latest gadgets, but there's a tiny crack

on the windshield, but the windshield is

like 99% perfect, so you should be fine.

If you were an astronaut, would you get

on that space shuttle if the windshield

was only 99% perfect? Of course not.

Why? Because only perfect windshields go

to outer space, not imperfect ones.

And similarly, only perfect people go to

heaven, not imperfect ones.

And last I checked, all of us here are

not perfect, but we every single one of

us fall short of the glory of God. And

so this is what he says in verse 21-23.

Then the Lord said, "There is a place

near me where you may stand on a rock

and when my glory passes by, I will put

you in a cleft in the rock and cover you

Moses

saw only the back of God

but we have seen the face of God.

In John 1:14 what does it say? The word

became flesh and made his dwelling.

That Greek word is tabernacled.

He made his dwelling or he tabernacled

amongst us. We have seen his glory, the

glory of the one and only son who came

from the father full of grace and truth.

When you follow the theme of scripture,

we see how God moves from a garden to a

tent tabernacle tent, a temple.

And then we see him move from a garden

to a tent

to a person.

And when God becomes like one of us, he

does something totally unexpected.

He becomes a baby where he now empties

himself of all glory. A king

who empties himself of glory and becomes

a servant.

And as he empties his glory, he does

something that was most unexpected of

all. He willingly lays down his life.

And when you think about the cross, one

of the interesting things that happens

on the cross is that scholars believe

that Jesus died sometime between 12 and

300 p.m. when it should be pretty sunny

outside.

But what we read in the gospel accounts

is during that time what happens to the

sky? It turns pitch black.

And the reason why darkness is now

happening is because the father's face

who should have been shining on the son

has now turned away from his son.

And the reason why God the Father turns

his way his face away from his son is

because Jesus took all of our sins

upon himself.

And he took that darkness upon himself

so that we would never be removed from

the presence of God, but that we would

always be in the presence of God. And

after Jesus dies, resurrects and

ascends, he sent his spirit that was in

the garden

during the creation,

his spirit that was in the tent, his

spirit that was in the person of Jesus,

and now that same spirit is in you. You

are in Christ, and Christ is also in

you. And if you believe that his

presence that was in that tent is now in

you,

that should change the way you live your

life. How could it not?

He is all around us, but he's also in

you. And so for those of you who are

investigating Christianity,

we're so glad that you're here. And I

want to share with you a story from

Wayne Dyer called Your Sacred Self where

he tells a story of twins in a mother's

womb. And one of the twins is a skeptic,

an unbeliever, while the other twin is a

believer. And the story goes something

like this. One of the twins goes,

"Bro, do you believe in life after

delivery?"

And the other replies, the believer

replies, "Of course, there has to be

something after delivery. Maybe we are

here to prepare ourselves for what will

come later." And the skeptic old baby

goes, "Nonsense.

There is no life after delivery. I mean,

what kind of life would that even be?"

And the believing baby says, "Well, I

don't know what kind of life that will

be, but surely there will be more light

out there than in here.

Maybe we will walk with our legs and eat

from our mouths.

Maybe we will have all of our other

senses that we can't understand right

now.

And the skeptical baby says, "That is

absurd. Walking is impossible.

And eating with our mouths, ridiculous.

The umbilical cord supplies all the

nutrients that we need.

and the umbilical cord is short. So life

after delivery is to be logically

excluded and we will never walk. So the

believing baby says, "Well, I think

there is something after delivery and

maybe it's different from here. Maybe we

won't need this physical cord anymore."

And the first one says again, "Nonsense.

Moreover, there is no life after

delivery. And if there was life after

delivery, then why hasn't anyone from

out there ever come in here?

Delivery is the end of life. And after

delivery, there is nothing but darkness

and silence and oblivion.

The believing baby says, "Well, I don't

I don't know.

Certainly, we will meet mother and she

will take care of us."

Mother, you you actually believe in

mother? That's laughable.

If mother exists, then where is she now?

And the second says, well, she's

actually all around us.

We are surrounded by her.

We are of her.

It is in her that we live. Without her,

this world would not and could not

exist,

said the first, well, I don't see her.

So, it is only logical that she doesn't

exist. to which the second replied, "But

sometimes

when you're in silence

and you focus and you really listen,

you can perceive her presence

and you can hear her loving voice

calling down from above."

And if you are investigating

Christianity for the first time,

I can't help but think

that God is like that, too.

He is all around us.

His presence is not only all around us.

His presence is inside of you.

And for my brothers and sisters that do

follow Jesus,

let me just end with this.

Uh, if you've ever traveled through

Midwest America,

you can see a snowstorm coming from 20

miles away. Like 20 miles away, you can

see it coming. What's interesting is how

certain animals respond to a storm. You

know what cows do when they see a storm

coming?

they run away.

But do you know what buffalo do when

they see a storm coming? They do the

opposite of cows. They actually run

towards the storm.

Now the question is why would buffalo

counterintuitively run towards the storm

instead of away from it?

And the reason why buffalo courageously

run towards the storm is because they

know if they run towards that storm, the

storm will pass over them eventually.

Cows think that they can actually outrun

the storm and they can't.

They get tired. Eventually the storm

catches up to them and they end up being

in the storm a lot longer than they

should be.

And my question to you, my brothers and

sisters,

is this.

Are you do you live your life more like

a buffalo

courageously running through storms in

your life

or do you live your life fearfully like

a cow

where you are running away from things?

Storms will come in your life. It is not

a matter of if, it is a matter of when.

And oftentimes as believers because we

forget the presence of God, we are

gripped by fear with the way that we we

are what is the great what is the most

frequent command in scripture?

It is not love God. Do you know what the

most frequent command in scripture is?

Do not fear.

Why? Why is that the most popular verse

in scripture? It's because we live our

lives like such scaredy-cats, like such

cowards.

But if you knew who was inside of you,

you would not be gripped by fear,

anxiety, and worry.

You would not be afraid of the storms

that come your way. If you really knew

who was inside of you, you would charge

through those storms. And I don't know

what storms you're facing in your life

right now. Whether it's unemployment,

you're single and you want to get

married.

You're afraid that your children will

never come to faith.

You're trying to have kids and you

can't. I don't know what storms you are

facing in life, but I do know this

that if Jesus and the power of the Holy

Spirit dwells within you, you are not

called to live cowardly or fearfully

like a cow.

But we are all called to live like

buffaloos because greater is he who is

in you

than he who is in this world. Let's pray

together.

God, remind us that

our attentions are not as infinite as we

think they are, but they are a finite

resource.

And so with the limited amount of

attention that we have per day,

help us to prioritize your presence in

our lives because without a feeling of

your presence and experiencing your

presence, our lives lack tremendous

power.

And God, we do not want to live our

lives without power and conviction.

And so remind us again that the same

spirit in creation in the tent in your

son lives in us.

May that influence the way we live our

lives and may that influence the lives

of all those around us as well. In Jesus

name I pray. Amen.

","":"
["GET
