if anyone needs translation

it's in the back

so we'll take some time to get situated

so just to be clear this is translation

from English to Thai

Japan

so hands up if you can hear translation

okay we good

we good all right I hope everyone's

weeks have been well

it's hard to believe that we're in the

last week of February

the weeks

just seem to be flying by

and although the weeks are flying by

we're still going to be parked in

chapter six this week

for our text

and so last week

preached on what First Corinthians

teaches us about sexual ethics

and this week we're going to be looking

at some things that we all have faced

are facing or if we aren't now we will

be facing

in the very near future

we're going to be looking at conflict

so hands up if you have never had

conflict before hands up

if you've never had conflict

the one man in the entire world right

there

see conflict is a it's a part of life

it's inevitable

but the way we think about conflict

and the way we navigate conflict it can

make all the difference

so conflicts between people can lead to

Great arguments

or deafening silences

conflicts are the reason that we have

wars

they're also the reason that friends

stop talking to each other

conflict can tear countries apart it can

tear families apart

can tear friendships apart

it can even tear individuals apart

think about the effects that conflict

has on a child

having to witness their parents

screaming at each other

so what does First Corinthians have to

teach us about conflict

everything our text for today is First

Corinthians chapter 6 verses 1 to 11.

so I'll read the text to us in English

and the tie is on the screen as well

so chapter 6 verses 1 to 11. if any of

you has a dispute with another do you

dare take it before the ungodly for

judgment instead of before the Lord's

people

or do you not know that the Lord's

people will judge the world and if you

are to judge the world are you not

competent to judge trivial cases

do you not know that we will judge

Angels how much more the things of this

life

therefore if you have disputes about

such matters do you ask for a ruling

from those whose way of life is scoring

in the church

I say this to shame you

is it possible that there is nobody

among you wise enough to judge a dispute

between believers

but instead one brother takes another

the court and this in front of

unbelievers

the very fact that you have lawsuits

among you means you have been completely

defeated already

why not rather be wronged why not rather

be cheated

instead you yourselves cheat and do

wrong and you do this to your brothers

and sisters

or do you not know that wrongdoers will

not inherit the kingdom of God

do not be deceived neither the sexually

immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor

men who have sex with men nor thieves

Norther greedy nor drunkards nor

slanderers nor swindlers will inherit

the kingdom of God

and this is what some of you were

but you are washed you were Sanctified

you were justified in the name of our

Lord Jesus Christ and by the spirit of

our God

so this is the word of God

so the two most fundamental things that

keep people from fighting is common

blood

family and common Faith being in the

same church

but we see all the time that there is

fighting in families and that there is

fighting in faith

our text for today is about a fight in

the family of faith there are Christians

taking each other to court

and Paul himself can't believe it

he's in shock

there is something in our hearts so

strong that inclines us to fighting that

even these powerful bonds that should be

pulling us together common Faith common

blood even these powerful things can't

stop it

and so we can approach the text asking

these questions

one why is fighting so serious

two what is the root of fighting

three how can we be healed

so three questions one why is it so

serious what's its root how can we be

healed

so why does Paul take this so seriously

In this passage we have Christians

taking one another to court

we see in verse 6 Paul says one brother

takes another Accord and this in front

of unbelievers

and so this is the issue that Paul is

addressing

now why is this such a big deal

today court cases are relatively common

everyone has disputes so why is Paul up

in arms about this

Paul says in verse 1

he says if any of you has a dispute with

another do you dare to take it before

the ungodly for judgment instead of

before the Lord's people

which shows us

the fact that a brother is willing to

take another brother to court is an

outrageous Act

and the implication here

is that one who is willing to do this is

someone who no longer cares about what

anyone thinks or feels and no longer

cares about the injuries that they may

inflict on others

not only so Paul says in verse 2 do you

not know that the Lord's people will

judge the world and if you are to judge

the world are you not competent to judge

trivial cases

which shows us really that the things

that these Christians are bringing each

other to court over the reason that

they're doing this they're not really

big deals he calls them trivial cases

they're no big deals at all

so these aren't criminal cases like if

someone has committed abuse to someone

else or if someone has physically harmed

someone

and for Christians to handle cases of

abuse embezzlement sexual misconduct

for us to handle that strictly in the

church that would be wrong and it would

be functionally saying that we don't

believe that God uses the authorities as

agents for good and to seek Justice

and these are the types of cases that

Paul is not talking about

he's actually talking about smaller

cases such as someone not paying back a

debt really it's small enough issues

that Paul calls them trivial cases

so the act of taking another Christian

McCourt causes Paul to take this

seriously is because one

someone who does this no longer cares

about the effects that their actions

have on other people they don't care

two they're willing to go to such an

extent over a trivial issue

some things that ultimately is not

important

think of the picture when family members

take each other to court because there's

a fight about how the family possessions

and inheritance will be divided

it's a shameful image isn't it

we would expect the family to be able to

handle a dispute like this without

having to go to court

but it happens all the time and it's

shameful

and if it's shameful when we see

families taking each other to court

how much more shameful is it when we see

members of God's family doing this

the Corinthians instead of resolving

their trivial matters within the church

they're going to public courts in order

to find resolution

in Paul's words verses four and five

says if you have disputes about such

matters do you ask for a ruling by those

whose way of life is scoring outside the

church

is there nobody in the church wise

enough to judge a dispute between

believers

the heart behind this is

Paul cannot believe that Christians

would appeal for judgment outside the

church when someone wrongs us rather

than to pursue reconciliation directly

so at this point someone might ask

well why is that doesn't it seem

reasonable for us to appeal to a third

party when we can't solve a disagreement

and the answer to that question is we

got to know something about the courts

and corins the way they worked so the

way that the courts in Corinth worked

was if you had more money the courts

were more likely to rule in your favor

and so over the past few weeks we've

talked a lot about

how Corinth was a city

of people obsessed with status and honor

and how much money you made and how

powerful you were and who you knew

and it's no different in the legal

system these courts were well known for

corruption

so if you had more power you would be

favored to win regardless if what you

did was wrong or right

it doesn't really matter

so some years ago

there were two Christian organizations

that were involved with bringing Bibles

into Russia during the Cold War

they sued each other

we're going back a little bit if you

want to adjust this you would not go to

the courts and corns all right main take

home if you want to Justice don't go to

Corinth why because the courts and

currents don't rule with Justice they

give

you're more likely to win if you have

power so don't don't go there

the courts and coins were used to prove

actually who had a higher status who had

more honor who was more powerful

so if you're rich and Powerful you could

get away with anything

if you were poor and you had nothing

even the legal system would be against

you see

doesn't that sound familiar

in taking their brothers and sisters to

court what the Christians and corinths

were doing was basically saying I don't

care about who is right who's wrong I

don't care about how my actions will

hurt or injure other people

I'm going to use the power I have to

make sure I get my way

all I care about is getting my rights

and I'm gonna make sure that I get them

and so they're actually exploiting their

power taking their brothers and sisters

to court in order to maintain their

status amongst the public

and so we may think okay this is really

interesting it's really bad but I don't

see how this applies to me I haven't

sued anybody I haven't taken anyone to

court I don't plan on taking anyone to

court so it doesn't apply to me okay

have you ever felt snubbed have you ever

been mistreated

have you ever thought I'm not getting

the respect I deserve how dare he or she

say that to me

have you ever been treated unfairly and

wanted to get back at them

what we see going on in Corinth

continues to happen today

and Paul's response is this is really

he says in verse 7 the fact that you

have lawsuits among you means you have

been completely defeated already

why does he say that why is this

indicative of defeat

well by appealing to the courts we've

seen that getting Justice is not the

main concern rather the main concern is

exploiting Brothers and Sisters in

Christ by abusing their power

so they don't care about Justice in fact

verse 8 tells us they go to the extent

of cheating and doing wrong

so in having to choose between Justice

or advantage and profit they are

choosing profit ten times out of 10. so

they've been one thing they've been

defeated by is their own selfishness

their own selfishness has led them to

exploit their brothers and sisters in

Christ

now some years ago there were two

Christian organizations that were

involved with bringing Bibles into

Russia during the Cold War

and so they sued each other in public

court for the whole world to see two

Christian organizations

ultimately it doesn't make a difference

which organization won right because

before the eyes of the world

there are already people who have been

turned off by the fact that Christians

are fighting each other in court

what this does is essentially saying to

everybody who's watching you Christians

are no better than we are you don't have

anything different than we have you need

us and you need our wisdom you need a

judge to come make you and force you to

do the right thing

what have you got to offer us what

difference does your gospel make you

don't have anything I need or want

so they've been defeated not only by

selfishness but because them taking

their small issues to court

it's a reflection that tells the world

that there is nothing different about

being a Christian

and ultimately

what that means is they've been defeated

because they've forgotten who they are

so in verses one and two Paul talks

about them being the Lord's people in

the Greek this word is often translated

as holy or Saints and it carries the

meaning lightness of nature with the

Lord and different from the world

so Paul when he calls him the Lord's

people when he calls them saints he's

reminding them who they really are

he's reminding them that they are

fundamentally different from the inside

out

and he's also reminding them of their

inheritance

because he says do you not know that the

Lord's people will judge the world

and if you are to judge the world are

you not competent to judge trivial cases

so we don't know what judging the world

means there's tons of different

interpretations but what we do know what

we can say is that it'll be glorious and

so Paul is saying that if you are in

Christ if you are a Christian then how

you handle conflict should be wiser and

more gracious than how the world handles

conflict

but because they've forgotten this by

forgetting who God has made them to be

instead of having wisdom to resolve

small matters they have no desire to

grow in wisdom

they're so concerned with how the World

Views them that they've forgotten their

true statuses since

so they're consumed by selfishness and

self-centeredness

and see that's why Paul says

and this is where we get to the root of

fighting

the Corinthians as we've said they're

fighting taking each other to court

because they've forgotten their real

status

and so they are now looking for status

and this leads to them cheating and

doing wrong to their brothers and

sisters

and the Bible says that this is the case

for all human beings and that this is

the reason for fighting

we feel like we don't have status

we feel like we don't have respect we

don't have honor and so we have to go

get it we're not sure of our

significance our value we're not sure of

our own worth and so we have to go get

it we have to go take it

and if this is true then it explains a

lot of things

for example it explains our culture of

success

if we look around our at our current

culture in Bangkok what we'll see is

that we believe that success and money

will make us secure important and happy

but then when we look at the high

numbers of people who have used all of

their means to achieve money and power

we see that many of them are

self-destructing

there was a counselor who was

interviewed she said success is the new

drug it's the new alcohol

she says think about a drug addict the

first time a drug addict has that first

high the first time they're trapped

they're done because from then on you're

going to need more and more of the drug

to achieve the same high

and as time goes on you have to use more

and more of the substance but you get

less and less pleasure from it until

finally you get to a place where you're

driven to destructive levels of use

all the while experiencing nothing

inside

and she says this counselor she says

this is how success works when we first

we get that first paycheck it's a high

we want to get even more success But as

time goes on it takes more and more

success to get that high until we can't

get it anymore and then we're just

working ourselves to death

and in the process we're hurting other

people we're taking advantage of others

we're using our power to get what we

want ultimately feeling empty

so being concerned with status

explains success but it also explains

crime and all sorts of conflict

ultimately it's not about politics at

the end of it or sorry ultimately

it's not about politics it's not about

who is right who is wrong it's about

respect

it's about respect that's why the

Corinthians don't care about Justice

they care about their own status because

it's about respect

and the taking advantage of people the

violence it's a response to them not

getting the respect that they feel that

they deserve

the Bible says deep down that we are

empty there is a vacuum

and emptiness in our hearts and this is

what causes us to be concerned with our

status this is what causes us to be

self-centered

and this is the root of fighting

self-centeredness destroys relationships

it's the reason we have wars

it's the reason we have family breakdown

and class struggle

why are relationships constantly

exploding

it's the darkness of self-centeredness

there's nothing that makes us more

miserable than self-absorption

asking questions like how am I feeling

how am I doing am I being treated justly

am I being treated with the respect that

I deserve how are people looking at me

am I succeeding am I proving myself

self-centeredness causes us to do

terrible things and it causes us to take

advantage of people and exploit people

just like the Corinthians

and the reason that this is done is

because trying to fill the vacuum inside

of us we're unsure of our status just

like the Corinthians and so we heard

other people and we hurt ourselves

and the Bible says the reason for this

Emptiness is because we were created by

God and for God

but we've turned away from God and

because we've turned away from God there

is an infinite size vacuum inside of us

that was meant to be filled with the

delight and the love of God

so if we turn away from God and he's not

the center of our life and the source of

all our joy and if we turn away we have

an infinite sized vacuum in us and we'll

do everything we can to fill it just

like the Corinthians deep down deep down

we won't care about how our actions

impact others

or how we injure other people

we'll just want to fill it fill that

vacuum but it'll never be full and so

will always be self-centered we'll

always be fighting

we're concerned with our rights see Paul

says why not rather be cheated why not

rather be wronged let's ask ourselves

why not rather be wronged

why not rather be cheated

how does that sound to us

it's a completely different set of

priorities and way of looking at the

world

why is it that Paul can say this

what will cure us

of our self-centeredness

so the reason Paul can say this is

because he sees he believes that being

cheated and being wronged

is not the worst case scenario it's not

the worst thing that can happen

losing our rights not having access to

our rights or even being disrespected

and treated very poorly is not the worst

thing that can happen

can you imagine being cheated

being disrespected your brother or

sister in Christ taken advantage of you

or are you losing a large amount of

money unfairly

imagine that and instead of trying to

get back trying to make sure that you

get that we get what is rightfully ours

we're okay with being cheated and

wronged

that goes against what most of us think

doesn't it we think I'm not a pushover

I'll show you how dare you do this to me

we're concerned with trying to get back

or if at the very least proving that

we're not weak

but what Paul is saying

is we should be willing to suffer loss

rather than the worst case scenario

which is disunity and disgrace to the

gospel

Paul is saying that we should absorb the

cost absorb the cost of being wronged

we should be able to forgive

and the reason is because the things of

this world are only temporary while our

relationship and reconciliation with

other believers is eternal

Paul's operating from a completely

different set of beliefs and priorities

than everybody

surely this would have shocked the

Corinthians and if you go up to any

normal person it will shock them too you

want me to willingly be wronged you want

me to willingly be cheated I could never

do that

but imagine imagine a scenario in which

a significant financial loss

thousands tens of thousands hundreds of

thousands even millions of Bud imagine a

loss like this takes place and instead

of trying to outdo each other in court

two Christians try to outdo one another

in sacrificial love and honor

what kind of message does that say to

everyone watching

it says our hope is not in the things of

this world our hope is not in our status

we're no longer concerned with our

self-centeredness instead we sacrifice

to love our Brothers and Sisters in

imagine being wronged I'm sure all of us

in this room have been wrong before

and instead of gossiping about the

person instead of stonewalling them and

never talking to them again instead of

cutting them out of our Lives completely

we turn around and we say I know what

you did is wrong you've hurt me but I

forgive you

imagine being able to absorb the cost

it's immensely difficult

this does not this is not easy I'm sure

it doesn't sound easy I'm sure this is

making everyone feel guilty

um including myself it's difficult isn't

it it's not easy it's costly

if

you're forgiving somebody it's

emotionally very expensive it takes

blood it takes sweat it takes tears

because in all cases

either the offender is going to suffer

or you are or I am

there is no way to deal with the debt

without suffering either you make the

offender suffer or you suffer for it

yourself

how do we forgive

the Bible says as long as we have this

emptiness in our hearts

we're never going to be able to do this

and Paul tells us in verse 11

that The Cure

is something has to happen outside of us

something outside of us needs to happen

verses 10 and 11 Paul says some of you

used to be sexually immoral some of you

used to be Thieves

some of you used to be greedy some of

you used to take advantage of people but

you were washed

you were Sanctified you were justified

in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and

by the spirit of our God

this is what Paul gives the Corinthians

and this is what Paul gives us

as the way for us to be healed

this is the only thing that will truly

bring us together

this is the thing that to the extent

that we grasp this it will put an end to

our self-centeredness and our fighting

and it really will to the extent that we

grasp this and let this go into our

hearts it puts an end to

self-centeredness why he says you are

washed you are Sanctified and you are

Justified Paul is saying something has

happened to you from the outside

the question is what what has happened

in John 13

on Jesus's last day it says Jesus knew

that the hour had come for him to leave

this world and go to the father

having loved his own who were in the

world he loved them to the end

in the Greek he loved them to the end it

says

he loved them to the full extent of his

love when it says to the end it means he

loved

he loved them to the whole extent that

love could be loved

to the full measure of love and later in

the chapter we see Jesus pouring water

into a basin and washing the disciples

feet one by one including Judas by the

way

in this act of foot washing Jesus

communicates to us something profound

about the nature of his love

he washes the disciples

he makes them clean

it's an act of self-giving love and when

we look to Jesus we find a beautiful

freedom to serve others coming from the

security of Jesus's identity

and the same heart that led Jesus to

wash the disciples feet is the same

heart that would lead him to the cross

Jesus was able to serve in this way he

was able to give of himself to others

because he had a security in his

identity

he knew God The Father's Love intimately

he wasn't empty he wasn't concerned

about his status he was full

but then on the cross Jesus cries out my

God my God why have you forsaken me

what happened

on the cross Jesus was not only

experiencing Agony and physical pain and

torture

but he experienced a deep dark emptiness

he experienced the Deep nothingness that

we all experience and that we all

deserve

why because on the cross the father

turned his face away on the cross Jesus

was forsaken

but why why did he do it Paul here tells

the Corinthians why not rather be

wronged why not rather be cheated

Jesus was wronged Jesus was cheated by

whom

by the Jews yes but also by you and by

me why because on the cross Jesus

experienced the nothing that we all

deserve and he experienced what we

deserve because we've turned away from

God

but still doesn't answer the question of

why why did he do it why

would he Delight not just rather why

would he Delight in being wronged

Hebrews 12 tells us that Jesus for the

joy set before him endured the cross

scorning its shame and sat down at the

right hand of God

Not only would Jesus rather

have been cheated but because of the joy

set before him because of the joy he

chose to be wrong he chose to be treated

he chose to go to the cross and so the

question is what is the joy set before

Jesus

let's ask what was it that Jesus did not

have before the cross

it could not have been the father right

he had the father

it could not have been Heaven he had

heaven

it couldn't have been command of the

entire universe

he had that

what did he not have before the cross

that he had after the cross

the answer is there's only one thing

you

and me

we are Jesus's joy and when we see Jesus

willing to be wronged willing to be

cheated willing to die because you are

his Delight we will be able to suffer

and forgive because Jesus becomes our

Beauty and our Delight see this is what

it means to be washed on the cross Jesus

experienced nothingness so that we could

experience fullness

do you want Jesus in your life

tell him when we believe in Jesus and

say and say Lord would you become

everything to me when we do this

the Deep vacuum inside our hearts is

filled with the love and Delight of God

we're washed we're washed white as snow

we're Justified we're sanctified

because of Jesus we have the same status

and security with the father we no

longer have to be concerned with our

status our status is the same of Jesus

this is what it means to be a Christian

a Christian is not primarily someone who

is living a certain way coming to church

serving being in Ministry a Christian

primarily is someone who is loved by God

God has washed you and you are now a

saint

and it's God's love that causes

character transformation in our lives

when we look at Jesus we find a

beautiful freedom to serve others

because our longing for status our

self-centeredness our longing for

meaning and significance is met in Jesus

imagine imagine this imagine you're a

billionaire

would be nice wouldn't it imagine you're

a billionaire and you have three 100

baht notes in your wallet

you call a grab

maybe you're coming to church maybe

you're going home you call a grab

and then at the end of your ride you

give the grab driver a 100 baht

since it cost 80 Baht you wanted to be

generous give a hundred Baht but then

later in the day

you realize in your wallet that you only

have one banknote you start off with

three but now you have one

so you think oh I must have dropped the

other banknote or I must have given two

by mistake to the grab driver

does this bother you

are you gonna call the police because of

a missing banknote

of course not you're a billionaire

what is 300 baht to you you're too rich

to be concerned about this kind of loss

this week someone criticized you

something you bought turned out to be

less valuable than you thought

something you wanted didn't go the way

that you wanted

someone disrespected you treated you

unfairly these are all real losses

but what will you do if you're a

Christian will you be discontent will we

shake our fist at God will we be unable

to sleep

if we do

it may be because we don't realize how

truly Rich we are

if we're that upset about our status

with other people if we're constantly

lashing out at people for hurting our

feelings

is fundamentally because we've lost

touch with our identity

as Christians We Are Spiritual

billionaires we are rich in Christ we

have the Delight of God the father in

our hearts our status is secure we are

God's treasure

and this is what ultimately gives us the

resources to forgive

to absorb the cost to navigate conflict

well because ultimately because of Jesus

we're full we're God's treasure

let's pray

Lord Jesus we thank you for these truths

Lord we pray that

you would help us through your Holy

Spirit to live with the security and the

Assurance of our true status

Lord if we are if we are being wrong if

we're in situations where our patience

is being tested

Lord if we've been wronged and we're

struggling to forgive we pray Lord

through the power of your holy spirit

that you would remind us of how rich we

are in you would this give us the power

to live or to live how you would have a

slit pray this in Jesus name amen

thank you

","":
Grace
