mission is that it's the quickest

person that learns Thai okay so and his

name is close to Thai his name is Ty and

I got Thai Nasha

[Applause]

okay hello everyone that day in my cup

if you're wearing translation can you

hear

that in my cup

we're good

okay okay we're good good great

all right

yeah glad everyone is here today

we will be in um we're continuing our

Series in First Corinthians and today

we'll be in chapters 12 and 13. so we'll

have some on the screen here this is my

first time doing this and so there we go

okay uh let me pray for us before we get

started let's pray

Father in heaven we we thank you

just as niran said earlier or think that

we can gather together and this is what

you have

this is what you've designed father

to give us yourself give us your son

Jesus give us your spirit and now we're

together father as as your children

Lord so we we pray that you would speak

through the word that you've given us

father

direct my words God made thee exalt

Jesus Christ father and would the body

be built up today uh it's in Jesus name

we pray amen

Okay so

if you have ever hung around after

church you've probably seen my children

okay I have three children and they're

usually running just wildly around here

I'm trying to stop them from ripping

down the curtains

but I want to share a quick story about

my children

that will help us better understand what

is going on in First Corinthians 12 and

13 today okay so but at the church in

Corinth at that time right brothers and

sisters they were looking at certain

gifts and abilities and they were acting

like some were better than others so

that's kind of the context but for my

kids okay

they they love to act things out they

love to play different roles they like

to be Spider-Man or Batman or a

policeman trying to catch the bad guy

but in order to do this they need to

choose which role they're going to play

right

and when they choose they always choose

the best role they always choose the one

guy that looks the coolest that acts the

coolest and when they act things out

they don't they don't care about the

other roles they just care about

themselves and they want to talk about

how how cool their character is and they

only focus on how they do the best job

at acting

they don't really pay attention to their

brothers and sisters that are also

supposed to be a part of the story they

just focus on themselves and then when

my wife Jen and I when we try and tell

them how the story is supposed to go and

teach them how to do it they get mad

because they just want to focus on

themselves and not others okay

and this is a silly example and I know

if you have kids you've probably

experienced this before but what are my

kids forgetting who taught them how to

play those roles okay my wife Jenna and

I did

who bought the Spider-Man costume

their parents did we did okay and who do

they need while they're acting out these

things they need their brothers and

sisters and they need Jenna and me to to

tell them what to do

so the members of the torch in court the

people who received this letter and

honestly this is for all of us that

we're like my kids we think that some

roles and some gifts in the church are

more important or better than others we

think that we don't need others

just like my kids forget that Jenna and

I their parents provide everything that

they need to be a certain role the

church at Corinth has forgotten that God

is the one who gives every gift he is

the source God is the one that gives

everyone certain gifts in order to serve

one another so that the body is built up

and then after Paul really rebukes the

Corinthians for this he ultimately shows

them what is the better way I think we

know what that is the better way is love

it's love for one another okay so before

we dive in I'm going to give like a

summary statement okay so when you're

leaving church today and someone is like

this Podium someone is like what was the

sermon about today you can just tell

them this so you can remember it all

God has given each one of us gifts to

build up the body

but the greatest thing we are to pursue

is love

okay I'm going to say it again God has

given each one of us gifts but the

greatest thing we are to pursue is love

all right so now you don't have any

excuse to not know what my sermon was

about I'm kidding okay so we're going to

have three points for the sermon today

if you're if you're a note taker if you

want to organize this

um

try and use this guy

oh sorry I didn't even already did it

can we go back one there we go okay

three points we're gonna start off with

the context of the problem so this is

going to kind of be like what did the

church at Corinth look like at this time

and then second is the problem right and

that'll be kind of in chapter 12 and

then three we'll talk about the solution

and that'll be chapter 13. so we have

the situation of the context then we

have the problem and we have the

solution to the problem

okay so first we will go

to the context of the problem

okay so what did so the church was in a

city right the city of Corinth what did

this city look like when they would have

received this letter from Paul

and Trey and Iran have all mentioned

this but the city of Corinth where they

received this letter it looked actually

would have been similar to Bangkok in

the ancient times it was one of the

biggest cities in the world

it was about six kilometers wide there

we go six kilometers wide and on each

side of it we've got a map here there's

water from the from the East and the

West there's water

and then from the North and South

there's land so anyone traveling to

by water would have had to pass through

Corinth and anyone traveling through

land would have also had to pass through

Corinth so what this resulted in is a

very diverse City because you have

people coming from all different sorts

of places and it also resulted in a very

wealthy City because it's a great place

for trade and business and people were

coming there to do business one other

thing it was also a very new city I know

that might sound a little bit weird but

when Paul wrote this letter it had only

been around for less than 100 years

which is not that old for a city

so what this means is that there weren't

like any old Corinth people you know how

you kind of have like old status people

Corinth didn't really have that at this

time so all the people of Corinth were

people who had come recently to kind of

like do business and make a name for

themselves so we have a lot of new

people in a new place a very diverse

people with lots of opportunity to make

money

to make a name for yourself to make

status

and so what this resulted is a lot of

relying on your own efforts on their own

efforts and working hard to make

something of themselves

and when you do what does that mean

s you can be proud of yourself because

you did that you came to this place you

you earned that money you made a good

name for yourself this is part of the

culture of Corinth at that time

so we talked that's the city what about

the church at Corinth okay so the church

in court was made up of people

they were part of the culture of Corinth

who'd come there they'd tried to make a

name for themselves

but then the gospel Comes The Gospel

Jesus Christ comes and what does the

gospel say

the gospel says in a lot of ways the

opposite of what the city of Corinth or

the city of Bangkok says

the gospel says that it's God who made

us and it's God who's given us

everything and even though we've turned

from worshiping God

and we worship other things and even

worship ourselves and what we can do

at that time God sent his son to die for

us and this message is what changed the

Corinthians the people in that church is

what changed them to come to believe in

Jesus it's the miraculous power of the

Gospel

and we can't boast in anything because

it's God who did it and not us all we do

is we say thank you God

so even though the brothers and sisters

there at the church of Corinth they were

Christians other believers now

which again they're following the way of

the cross the way of the Gospel which

looks like foolishness to the world but

these willing sisters just like all of

us they're very prone

to boast in themselves and to divide

over who is better and they would like

fall back into their old ways the old

ways of thinking and we saw this when

needon preached on First Corinthians 1

where people would divide over which

leader was better which leader had more

could this speak better had more

charisma

so it's all of this that we see the

situation like the context of what's

going on in Corinth at that time okay

again they've been saved they're in the

church but we're still prone to bring

the ways of the city into the church

where that was supposed to be living

according to the gospel

okay so we're about to dive into chapter

12 though to look at the problem but

before we go there though

I want to look at my own heart and I

want all of you to look at your hearts

with this

these words God's words are not just

meant for us to point fingers and say

look at how messed up the church at

Corinth was okay these words are also

meant to shine a light into our own

hearts and to show our own sin and to

show an even greater savior okay so a

couple of questions

where are we where am I where are you

living according to the statuses and

ways of the world and not according to

the Gospel of Jesus Christ

where are you prone to look at your own

work

your own status your own ability

what area of your life what area of my

life needs to be reminded that it is God

who made us it's God who saved us and

it's God that gives us everything we

need this is all of Grace and this is

foundational to who we are as God's

children Okay so we've seen the context

of the problem and now we're going to

look at the specific problem this will

be in chapter 12. I'm gonna grab some

water

great so now we'll be looking at the

problem

in chapter 12. so Paul he's about to

dive into

something about spiritual gifts and so I

we need to Define that we need to know

what's going on so I'm going to quickly

Define what spiritual gifts are there's

a couple places in Scripture

that we'll talk about this we see it in

Ephesians 4 and Romans 12 in our passage

today but a very simple definition of a

spiritual gift is it's a gift right

you earn it it is given to you and it's

a spiritual gift it's a gift that's

given by the Holy Spirit we'll see some

some examples here of T like teaching or

wisdom or faith

and the purpose of this gift is not to

build up yourself but it's to build up

others in the body okay so I'm gonna

read

start us off in First Corinthians 12

verses one through three it's on the

screen here I'm going to read it in

English

Paul says Paul writes this is the word

of the Lord

now about the gifts of the Spirit

brothers and sisters I do not want you

to uninformed

you know that when you were Pagan

somehow or other you were influenced and

led astray to mute Idols therefore I

want you to know that no one who is

speaking by the spirit of God says Jesus

be cursed and no one can say Jesus is

Lord except by the Holy Spirit

okay so the first thing that Paul says

here is he just wants to be clear

because at that time in Corinth and we

could really say at this time in Bangkok

there's a lot of spiritual

manifestations a lot of spiritual things

going on so Paul just gives you a very

quick litmus test and says is this of

God

and the simple answer is is the gift

exalting Jesus Christ as Lord okay it's

very simple that's what he's saying here

I'm going to go on and continue reading

in

4 through 11.

he continues there are different kinds

of gifts but the Same Spirit distributes

him

there are different kinds of service but

the same Lord

there are different kinds of working but

in all of them and in everyone it is the

same God at work

now to each one the manifestation of the

spirit is given for the common good

to one there is given through the spirit

a message of wisdom to another a message

of knowledge by means of The Same Spirit

to another Faith by The Same Spirit

to another Gifts of healing by that one

Spirit to another miraculous powers to

another prophecy to another

distinguishing between spirits to

another speaking in different kinds of

tongues and still to another the

interpretation of tongues

all these are the work of one in the

same spirit and he distributes them to

each one as he determines

okay so we have the church in Corinth

here right maybe a couple hundred

Believers a couple hundred brothers and

sisters or again we could even say for

Grace city today for all of us right

here maybe 70 80 people

and each one of us each one of you and

me we've been given a different gift

chapter 12 verse 4 it says there there

are many varieties there are different

gifts

verses 8-10 Paul goes on to list these

outs wisdom knowledge Faith healing

prophecy the ability to distinguish

Spirits tongues

so the all of these different gifts do

they come from different places

no Paul says this like five times in

this section they're all different but

they come from one place there is one

spirit of God that gives all of these

so we have God who is one giving a

variety A diversity of gifts and why

does he do it look at verse seven he

does it for the common good

so God gives gifts to his children for

the building up of the body together not

just one person okay and it this is

really

amazing how this all works if we just

look at the logic of this

as we've seen the way of the cross the

way of the Gospel it is foolishness it's

again it's in a lot of ways it's

backwards to the way of the world

so God has designed that we all have

diverse gifts not to build like our

gifts not for building ourself up it's

for building our brothers and sisters up

so let's say that someone over in this

section has the gift of faith right

you're like ready to go play in a church

or start a minister you're willing

you're ready to go do something that

other people are afraid to do okay

play someone here in the middle so you

have the gift of service you're like you

just see needs and you want to go meet

those needs whether it be in our church

or

in the city

okay someone over here

teaching all right you love studying and

you're really good at explaining

difficult things so that other people

understand it

so our faith person over here they don't

need to just go and hang out with a lot

of other people that have faith right

what do they need

they need someone who is thinking about

the needs of the people and how we can

go and serve these people in the same

way the service person you don't need

just more of what you already have you

need the teacher to come and help you

understand God's word okay

so

it's again it's just amazing how this

works

I want to just point out two different

things from this

the first thing because this is the way

of the Gospel this logic is

number one you cannot boast in the gift

that you have all right we're all prone

to do that and we'll talk about that in

a second but you can't boast in the gift

that you have why because it's of Grace

because God gave it to you second of all

and this is what's crazy you don't even

need it for yourself

right your gift was given to you for

other people

again that this is just so gospel in its

culture here that it's it's not about us

it's about what God has given us

and it's amazing how God brings this

unity and diversity

so another quick example as we've seen

we all know how amazing Wawa is at

playing the bass okay

does Wawa need more base

no you know what Wawa needs Wawa needs

Susan on the violin right

and Susan doesn't need more violin

she needs mail singing right you get the

picture here God has designed this so

that the gift that we have or to support

our brothers and sisters and the gifts

that they have are used to support us

it's an amazing picture

but is this how the church at Corinth is

operating

no it's not how they're operating

so what's their problem

we're going to keep reading here the

next slide we already there yeah

okay

just as a body the one has many parts

but all its many parts form one body

so it is with Christ for we were all

baptized by one spirit so as to form one

body whether Jews or Gentiles slave or

free and we were all given the one

Spirit to drink

even so the body is not made up of one

part but of many

now if the foot should say because I'm

not a hand I don't belong to the body it

would not for that reason stop being a

part of the body

and if the ear should say because I'm

not an I I don't belong to the body it

if the whole body were an eye where

would the sense of hearing be

if the whole body were an ear where the

sense of smell be

but in fact God has placed the parts in

the body every one of them just as he

wanted them to be

if they were all one part where would

the body be as it is there are many

parts but one body

the I cannot say to the hand I don't

need you and the head can't say to the

feet I don't need you on the contrary

those parts of the body that seem to be

weaker are indispensable in the parts

that we think are less honorable we

treat with special honor and the parts

that are unpresentable are treated with

special modesty while our presentable

Parts need no treat no special treatment

but God has put the body together giving

greater honor to the parts that lacked

it so that there should be no division

in the body but that its part should

have equal concern for each other

if one part suffers every part suffers

with it if one part is honored every

part rejoices with it

now you are the body of Christ and each

one of you is a part of it and God has

placed in the church first of all

Apostles second prophets third teachers

then Miracles then Gifts of healing of

helping of guidance of different kinds

of tongues or Apostles or all prophets

they're all teachers to all work

miracles to all have the gifts of

healing to all speak in tongues to all

interpret now eagerly desire the greater

so in verse 12 Paul begins a metaphor

here of the human body to describe the

church in Corinth and really the problem

of what is going on there he says just

as a body though one has many parts but

all its many parts form one body so it

is with Christ

so the human body works together just to

play out this metaphor our hands

help us pick things up

but they don't know where to go without

our eyes telling them where the thing is

they need to pick up okay but our eyes

aren't going to do us any good unless we

have a brain that is saying you need to

go pick that thing up right but what

what happens when the brain says to the

hand I don't need you

that they've missed the point they've

missed the point of this is how the body

works is how God has designed our

physical bodies and his own body the

body of Christ the church

this is the church a Corinth problem

okay the problem is that those in the

church with more impressive gifts like

knowledge or speech they're looking at

others who have less impressive gifts

and saying I'm more important than you

here I don't need you you're not as

essential as I am here

okay we saw in Paul's earlier

description of How It's one spirit of

God who gives many gifts for the purpose

of building up the body together

the Corinthians have forgotten this

the problem is that they're using their

own gifts for their own good for

boasting and puffing themselves up and

then that divides the body instead of

building it up

okay the Corinthians and again this is

for all of us okay

all of us we act like my children do

when we boast my kids boast and how

great they are at being Spider-Man in

the story but they forget who gave them

the costume who taught them everything

and in other their brothers and sisters

that they need

we've forgotten that God is the one who

has given us these gifts

and the problem is the Corinthians again

are using their gifts to puff up

themselves and not one another and this

is not how the body of Christ is

supposed to work

at the core the Corinthians have

forgotten the gospel

using your gift again I'm looking at

myself to using our gifts to boast and

saying it's more necessary than another

gift it's a symptom of not understanding

the gospel and God and how he works

that is that we've all been saved by

grace alone in every ability that we

have comes from God because of Jesus's

death on the cross that paid for it

so are you good at serving

it is because Jesus death on the cross

purchased the holy spirit that lives in

you right now

are you good at teaching or

encouragement

the reason is Jesus and what he did to

pay for you to have that gift it's

because of the cross

of course for application I want to ask

you what spiritual gift

do you have

okay think about it for a second

and be honest with yourself are you

using that gift to build up others and

not yourself

this is a pretty obvious that was a

pretty obvious application question

maybe a less obvious one is

look around the room

what spiritual gifts do you see in your

brothers and sisters

this should be the better application

question maybe because what they have is

what you need okay you should be look at

it your own self you should be looking

at what your brothers and sisters have

and they should be looking at you

because you have what they need and they

have what you need

because we get all that we need from

Jesus we aren't jealous or envious

of other gifts

we aren't arrogant

and we don't boast in what we have

because it's all of Grace

we don't insist on our own way but

rather we look to serve others

what do we do

we do what's better than any spiritual

gift

we love

and that is Paul's solution

so I'm going to read First Corinthians

13 here

this is the word of the Lord

I will show you the most excellent way

if I speak in the tongues of men or of

angels but do not have love

I am only a resounding gong or a

clinging symbol

if I have the gift of Prophecy and can

fathom all Mysteries and all knowledge

and if I have a faith that can move

mountains but do not have love I am

nothing

if I give all I possess to the poor and

give them for my body to hardship that I

may boast but do not have love

I gain nothing

love is patient love is kind it does not

envy does not boast it is not proud

it does not dishonor others it is not

self-seeking it is not easily angered it

keeps no record of wrongs love does not

Delight in evil but rejoices with the

truth

it always protects always trusts always

hopes always perseveres

so if you've been around Christians or

church any amount of time you've likely

heard this quoted it's a very familiar

passage and for good reason it's a very

beautiful passage but I hope that today

you're able to see this for the context

that it's in

all right so if we're the Corinthians

we've gotten this letter we're reading

it we get to the part about love

they wouldn't have been like really

excited and said like this is amazing

poetry about love

you know they probably would have said

they probably said like

oh no

but Paul's talking about us

we're the ones that boasted about

speaking in tongues and prophesying and

having great faith without having love

in verses four to seven you can look at

the words up here four to seven Paul

describes love as not being rude

not being proud not being self-seeking

do you know what Paul has already called

the Corinthians in this letter

he's called them proud

he's called them rude he's called them

self-seeking okay so this is coming as

more of a rebuke and it's a rebuke that

points at the Corinthians the

Corinthians think that speaking well or

having great knowledge or seeming very

spiritual is the most important

and the Lord the Lord gives us with

these things as we've seen to use it to

well what does Paul tell them is better

it's love

and love is patient It's Kind it's

humble it's forgiving it's truthful guys

the these things are not flashy or

impressive like some other spiritual

gifts but they are the core the

foundation of what it means to be a

child of God we are to pursue love like

Paul describes here more than the other

there's a lot that could be said about

these attributes and I want to make one

observation

these are all characteristics that come

from difficult situations okay what do I

mean by that

um there are descriptions that come from

someone loving someone else in a

difficult situation

so first love is patient all right you

usually or I usually don't get called

patients unless we prove to be patient

in a difficult situation

look at another one love does not boast

this is only said when someone could

have boasted what they chose to love

instead

love keeps no record of wrongs this is

only described about someone where they

could have very easily kept a record of

wrongs but they chose to love instead

so my an application for all of us here

is when you read this and think wow

love is great I want to be a more loving

person

realize this is a very difficult Road

being patient not being irritable not

insisting on your own way this sounds

great right

but what about when you've been waiting

at the restaurant for an hour

for your friend from small group to get

there and they finally get there and

you're really hungry

how are you going to treat your friend

not keeping a record of wrongs bearing

all things again these sound great

but what about at Bible study

there's someone who always interprets

scripture wrong

are you going to treat them

or we could go the other way what if

there's someone at Bible study who

always corrects always thinks that they

know everything

how are you going to treat them

what I'm trying to show us is that the

Corinthians and all of us

if we're going to love like what Paul is

talking about we need more than just a

list of attributes that we have to try

and do and be

what do we need

we need a person

we need a savior

we need a person to show us in body form

what this kind of love looks like

really we need someone to love us like

this first so that we know what it's

like and our hearts are changed and

we're able to love like this

love like this can only come from a

changed heart

and brothers and sisters

Jesus is the only person that can change

our hearts we need Jesus Jesus is this

list

Jesus was patient and kind to his

disciples when they messed up over and

over

Jesus did not boast and was not proud

when he could have been could have been

he didn't hold up his equality with God

as something to boast about and instead

he went to the cross and died for you

and for me

Jesus did not seek his own will but he

sought the will of his fathers and

obedience

and this is amazing

Jesus could have kept the biggest record

of wrongs ever done to him by you and by

me

but what did he do instead

he went to the cross

greater love has no one than this

to lay down one's life for one's friends

if you want a love like this you look at

Jesus and see how he has loved you

look at how he loved and died for you

he did this to change our hearts to love

like him and to love our brothers and

sisters as he's loved us he's promised

to give us his Spirit as we trust in him

so brothers and sisters look on Jesus

see how he's loved us and made us a

child of God this is how we love let's

pray

father we are grateful for for your word

we're grateful for how you speak to us

Lord

God we pray that that these words in

this text Lord would go with us Lord

that your spirit would work in them

would change our heart sword would

change our hearts to look more like

Jesus as we grow to trust in your gospel

more and more God again we love you we

pray that we would love you more and

more in Jesus name amen

","":
Grace
