want to introduce you our

future for the day okay he is no

stranger to us really

Matt Tyler has uh is actually an answer

to our prayers because we've been

praying for somebody to come and start

an English service for many years okay

and he and Danny and his team came to be

among us for a while and now it's

starting in small ways great city has a

small part in in helping them plan a

church

so would you please welcome

Matt Tyler

[Applause]

well good afternoon it's uh great joy

for me to to be here this afternoon with

all of you

ajanati

said that you all have played a small

part in the planting of Bangkok City

Baptist Church that's not true Grace

city has been very helpful they have

played uh you got you all have played a

huge role in helping us get started here

in the city of which we're very thankful

we want to I wanted to let you know on

behalf of bcbc this afternoon that

we praise God for your church we pray

for grace City regularly we pray for

things like we pray that that you guys

would see more baptisms like what you

just saw uh this afternoon that's

something that we pray for you all about

we pray that the Lord would send more

people here who can hear the gospel we

also thank God for the ways in which you

have been so helpful to us in getting

started when I go to supporting churches

outside of Thailand I often tell them

about how we've been getting started and

I mentioned Grace City and tell them

about how you've let us use your space

you've even sent us some of your beloved

members which we're very thankful for

and you are also helping us get

registered and how you all have

encouraged us and everybody is amazed

and and they talk about how it's a

testimony of God's grace and a testimony

to the gospel that a church is helping

another church get started so very very

thankful for you all I think you guys

would all agree certainly this is uh

something that that I've experienced

over the last seven months is we've been

planting a new church that the way you

begin something is very important

I think you guys would all agree with

that the famous author Stephen King has

admitted that he'll spend weeks months

and even years on the opening paragraphs

of his books this is what Stephen King

says he says if I can get the first

paragraph right I'll know that I can

write the rest of the book

Beginnings are important

I know that with my preaching I spend a

lot of time thinking about how I'm going

to begin the sermon how I'm going to

start it what my introduction is going

to be like because my introductions are

usually how I gain people's attention

it's how I let you in on the the sermon

theme it's how I give you an idea of my

purpose and my outline so Beginnings are

are quite significant and I don't think

that's just true in writing or in

preaching I don't think any of us would

spend much time in this building if we

learned that as they began building it

they took shortcuts they didn't build

the foundation correctly

Beginnings often tell us about the whole

you know how you begin your day usually

affects how the rest of your day is

going to go

I think this observation is true about

the Bible as well the beginning of the

Bible Genesis is significant

one person observed that almost every

important Doctrine is found in seed form

in the Book of Genesis I wonder if

that's how you've thought about Genesis

as containing every important doctrine

of the Bible in seed form

if you're familiar with the Bible it's

likely that when you think of Genesis

you either think of you know the

colorful stories that you find in

children's book Bibles or you think of

scientific questions

for some this means that their study of

Genesis never leaves the realm of

controversies or cuteness

thinking about Genesis in in these ways

I think often leave people on the verge

of either being embarrassed by Genesis

or failing to handle Genesis with the

seriousness that it deserves

so what is the proper way of thinking

about the beginning of the Bible Genesis

this important book

well another author writes that Genesis

provides Christians with a foundational

world view that is assumed but not

necessarily taught by later scripture in

other words if if we possessed a Bible

without Genesis we would have a a house

of cards something that that doesn't

have a foundation

Genesis is the beginning of God's word

and therefore it's foundational for us

it's foundational for Christians Genesis

contains all the important doctrines

that we believe in seed form and it can

give us significant clues about what God

is doing in the world and where this

world is heading so I want to invite you

this afternoon to turn in your Bibles to

Genesis chapter 1.

and I want to consider from this chapter

the foundation of our faith I want to

think about God himself what is this

chapter teach us about God

so if you have your Bibles you can look

at Genesis 1. if you're not familiar

with the Bible you can just grab Bible

and probably if you just turn to page

one you'll find the scripture there

where you can look it up on your phone

let me read this whole chapter for us

I'm going to read to chapter 2 verse 3.

says in the beginning

God created the heavens and the Earth

the Earth was without form and void and

darkness was over the face of the deep

and the spirit of God was hovering over

the face of the waters

and God said let there be light

and there was light

and God saw that the light was good and

God separated the light from the

darkness

God called the light day and the

Darkness he called night and there was

evening and there was mourning the first

day

and God said let there be an expanse in

the midst of the waters and let it

separate the waters from the waters and

God made the expanse and separated the

waters that were under the expanse from

the waters that were above the expanse

and it was so

and God called the expanse heaven and

there was evening and there was morning

the second day

and God said let the waters under the

heavens be gathered together into one

place and let the dry land appear and it

was so

God called the dry land Earth and the

waters that were gathered together he

called seas and God saw that it was good

and God said let the Earth Sprout

vegetation

plants yielding seed and fruit trees

bearing fruit and which is their seed

each according to its own kind on the

earth and it was so

the Earth brought forth vegetation

plants yielding seed according to their

own kinds and the trees bearing fruit

and which is their seed each according

to its kind and God saw that it was good

and there was evening and there was

mourning

the third day

and God said let there be lights in the

expanse of the Heavens to separate the

day from the night and let them be for

signs and for seasons and for days and

years and let them be lights in the

expanse of the Heavens to give light

upon the Earth and it was so

and God made the two great lights the

greater light to Rule the Day and the

Lesser light to rule the night and the

stars and God set them in the expanse of

the Heavens to give light on the earth

to rule over the day and over the night

and to separate the light from the

darkness and God saw that it was good

mourning the fourth day

and God said let the water swarm with

swarms of living creatures and let birds

fly above the Earth across the expanse

of the heavens

so God created the great sea creatures

and every living creature that moves

with which the waters swarm according to

their kinds and every Winged Bird

according to its kind and God saw that

it was good

and God blessed them saying be fruitful

multiply and fill the waters in the seas

and let Birds multiply on the Earth

mourning the fifth day

and God said let the Earth bring forth

living creatures according to their

kinds livestock and creeping things and

beasts of the Earth according to their

kinds and it was so

and God made the beasts of the Earth

according to their kinds and the

livestock according to their kinds and

everything that creeps on the ground

then God said let us make man in our

image after our likeness and let them

have dominion over the fish of the sea

and over the birds of the heavens and

over the livestock and over all the

Earth and over every creeping thing that

creeps on the Earth

so God created man in his own image in

the image of God he created him male and

female he created them and God bless

them

and God said to them be fruitful and

multiply and fill the Earth and subdue

it and have dominion over the fish of

the sea and over the birds of the

heavens and over every living thing that

moves on the Earth

and God said behold I've given you every

plant yielding seed that is on the face

of all the Earth and every tree with

seed in its fruit you shall have them

for food and every beast of the earth

and every bird of the heavens and to

everything that creeps on the earth

everything that has the breath of life I

have given every green plant for food

and God saw everything that he had made

and behold it was very good and there

was evening and there was mourning the

sixth day

thus the heavens and the Earth were

finished and all the hosts of them and

on the seventh day God finished his work

that he had done and he rested on the

seventh day from his work that he had

done so God blessed the seventh day and

made it holy because on it God rested

from all of his work that he had done in

creation

friends we should understand just what

we have have read this is one of the

only chapters in the entire Bible in

which human sin is not present

it's a very special chapter

and I want to consider this afternoon

what it teaches us about the God that

stands behind it so I like to give a

main point for the sermon which I hope

is also the main point of the passage

that we're preaching from so this is the

the main point of Genesis 1 I think it's

this

the one true God is The Sovereign

creator

ruler and sustainer of all that exists

and he does all things well

he does all things well

preaching in a church where many of the

members speak English as a second

language has its challenges as some of

you will know one of those is is

constantly reaching for a language that

that everyone can understand

uh but at the end of the day there are

some words and ideas that we simply must

Embrace and explain and use to

Faithfully convey what God's word

teaches and one of those words is this

word used in the main point the word

sovereign God's sovereignty is one of

his major characteristics it's described

throughout scripture and it's

particularly noticed here in Genesis

Chapter One what does it mean for God to

be Sovereign that's what I really want

to consider this afternoon and I want to

note from Genesis chapter 1 seven ways

that God's sovereignty demonstrates

itself that's our outline this morning

seven ways that God's sovereignty

demonstrates it so here's

Point number one

how does God's sovereignty demonstrate

itself in Genesis 1 God is supreme

God is

Supreme just look at how the Bible

begins look at Genesis chapter 1 verse

1. it says in the beginning

God

have you ever stopped to think about the

significance that the first person

mentioned in the Bible

is God

we learn who the main character of

Genesis 1 is who the main character of

the Bible is it's God

and how does the bible end

Revelation chapter 21 verse 21 it ends

with Jesus

the son of God

so from beginning to end the main

character of the Bible is God himself

and we can say then that God's

sovereignty means that he is supreme

I wonder how you read the Bible

do you read it as if you're the main

character

or as if God is the main character

I think we're prone to come to our quiet

times asking okay

I wonder what I can get out of this for

me today

how does this passage apply to my life

maybe we approach sermons in the same

way well it's a good sermon when it

applies

to my life when it applies to me I know

that in books about preaching I don't

know if you've ever read any preaching

books but in books about preaching it's

often said that a sermon isn't really a

sermon until you make it applicable to

the congregation I don't necessarily

disagree with any of that I think it's

super important for us to apply God's

word to our life but

we need to understand that knowing god

growing in our understanding of God of

his character and who he is

itself wonderful and beautiful and good

it's good to open up your Bibles and ask

what does this teach me about God

it's good to sometimes walk away from a

sermon not thinking oh that was really

good for me I I really needed that today

but instead thinking

how amazing is God

how wonderful and mighty and holy and

awesome and fearsome and exalted and

marvelous is God

in fact it would be good if sometimes

our Bible reading and our sermons caused

us to think of ourselves less

now word order there is is very

important I didn't say that God's word

should cause us to think less of

ourselves I said that God's word should

cause us to think of ourselves less

and why is that

it's because God is supreme

that's what we see in Genesis chapter 1.

we also see too that God is pre-existent

God's sovereignty means that he is

pre-existent this is the second Point

God is pre-existent that that may be a

new word for those of you who whose

first language is not English but

Genesis 1 1 tells us that in the

beginning before anything else existed

God existed

God has no maker

God is not a created being

instead he is the first being he is the

creator he is always existed

he has no beginning he is pre-existent

now thinking about God's existence

Before Time began causes your brain to

hurt you know if that's just something

that that you find very difficult to

understand well then let this great

mystery lead you to praise him for being

a God that you can't fully understand he

is so exalted so far beyond us as

creatures that much about him remains a

mystery except that which he has chosen

to reveal to us

and I think that's a good thing

and we might ask why did this God who

existed before time began

why did he choose to create

that's a good question why did God who

existed before all things decide one day

to to just create the world

we need to know that God did not create

the world because he was lonely

that is not why God created the world

sometimes you'll hear people say that

but God was not lonely when we say that

God pre-existed we we shouldn't think of

an old man in the sky just kind of with

a great void surrounded surrounding him

that would be to diminish God's

sovereignty

the Bible teaches that God does not need

anything

in Genesis 1 should cause us to think

that God created because he needed

something

instead the Bible teaches that God is

Trinity he is one God who exists in

three persons the Father the Son and the

Holy Spirit and each person is fully God

and yet there is one God

now Genesis 1 doesn't reveal God as

Trinity explicitly for that we we need

the rest of the Bible but the seeds of

God as Trinity are here so just notice

look back at verse two you'll see that

the spirit of God was hovering over the

waters

or you can look at verse 26 and see that

God is taking counsel within himself and

he declares let us make Mankind in our

image these are the seeds of what we

learn from the rest of scripture that

our God is a Triune God fully sufficient

content good and loving in and of

himself these characteristics

continually flow out between each person

of the godhead as they have always done

even before God created so again God is

Not

and has never been lonely

so why did God create why did God create

us

I think there's two answers to that

question two reasons I want to give for

Why God created us I'm going to give you

one now and I'll give you the second one

later in the sermon you're just gonna

have to put it aside and we'll come back

to it but the first reason that God

created

is for His glory

it's for his own Glory

Psalm 19 1 says that the heavens declare

the glory of God

Isaiah 43 7 says that God created

everyone for his glory Romans 11 verse

36 says all things are from him and for

him to him be the glory forever

now let's make sure that we understand

what it means that God created

everything for his glory John Piper

illustrates this concept in this way he

says when we say God's creation exists

to glorify him we're saying that

creation is more like a telescope than a

microscope

so microscopes make small things look

bigger than they are

but telescopes make unimaginably big

things

look like what they are

our lives are to be telescopes for the

glory of God we are created to see his

glory to be thrilled by God's glory and

to live so as to help others understand

God's glory

now this afternoon if if you've come

here as a Buddhist I want you to know

that this is a church that welcomes all

people if if you're here and and you're

not a Christian you're welcome here this

is a church that would love to get to

know you and if you've been around for a

while you already know that but if

you're a Buddhist it may surprise you

that Christians care so much about why

and how God created the world

I know that in in Buddhism the way the

universe began is it's not nearly so

important

I understand that Buddha told a parable

of a man who was shot by a poisoned

arrow and that man insisted on knowing

the details of who shot him where where

did the Arrow come from

and Buddha pointed out that the man died

before he found the answers and the

point was that people should not be so

concerned with how they arrived on this

planet and instead focus on getting

better and preventing suffering and

reaching enlightenment

now friend there's a problem with this

teaching

if there is a God who pre-exists

creation and who created everything

for his glory

this is why Christians believe that

Buddhism and Christianity cannot both be

true at the same time

we think Christianity is true and that

the God who created you and me deserves

to be listened to and obeyed and honored

maybe today that would be a really good

thing to talk about with the Christian

friend who who brought you you can just

ask them what does it mean to truly

glorify the god that created me

well thirdly we see from this passage

about what God's sovereignty means we

see that it means that he is powerful

God is powerful notice again in verse 1

that in the beginning God created the

heavens and the Earth

that word create in verse 1 comes from a

Hebrew verb that is only ever used of

God as the subject

the point is is that while humans May

build and make and form and construct we

do so out of materials that that already

exist you know sometimes I think people

will they'll describe themselves as

creators you know I'm a I'm a content

creator or I created this business

sometimes people will talk that way but

the reality is is that God is the only

true creator in the world because he

alone created from nothing

God didn't construct the heavens and the

Earth from some matter or some things

that existed before it instead as we

read in Genesis 1 God spoke

and things came into being

God spoke and things came into being all

things exist because of his Sovereign

decree and will

and the incredible variety that we see

in nature from the the tiniest organisms

that are still being discovered to the

largest galaxies that have not yet been

seen by the human eye all of these

things come from the mind of God

and we might wonder why did God create

like this why did God create so much

variety

why did one so powerful why did it take

him six days to create all this

Prince isn't it so that we might take

the time to learn and Marvel at his

great his great creativity and beauty

and wisdom

I mean we can spend a lifetime studying

one part of God's creation and yet never

exhaust knowledge about that one part

isn't it why John Calvin says God

created over six days Calvin says God

did not want to accomplish his Works in

a single in a single moment because he

wanted us to spend all our lives

studying and pondering them and

profiting from them

you just consider how God's word points

to Creation to teach us about God

so a famous example of this Matthew

chapter 6 verses 25 to 34 Jesus points

to the birds of the air and the flowers

of the field to teach us about trusting

in God and fighting anxiety because many

of you know that text Jesus says the

birds do not sow or reap or store away

in Barns and yet God feeds them

the flowers grow they do not labor or

Spin and yet they're beautifully clothed

and Jesus says the point is won't God

who loves you more than the birds feeds

you won't God who loves you more than

the flowers clothe you

friends let God's creation teach you

about what it means

to trust in him and to obey him and to

live for him

and to worship Him

take note when and how scripture uses

creation to teach you this is this is

actually all over the Bible to be a a

really good conversation to have with

one another over dinner tonight or if

you're having dinner with your family

just discuss it with your family what

are what are some things you can think

of from the Bible where God is using

creation to teach you something about

how you should live or how you should

relate to him

and then as you think about those things

cultivate

Wonder

and God's creation

learn what God's creation Beauty means

for the beauty of God

you can watch nature shows on Netflix

and and just consider the the power of

consider the authority and might of God

to create whatever it is you're watching

you can take family vacations out into

God's creation and talk to your kids

about what creation says about the God

who stands behind it all

now why am I telling you what to think

and what to watch on Netflix and where

to go on vacation

well it's because I think God created

all the wonderful things in the world

for you and for me to Marvel over and to

talk about and to reflect on and to

learn from and not not just for the sake

of learning but for the sake of growing

in our praise for God

Romans chapter 1 verse 20 says that

since the creation of the world God's

invisible qualities have been clearly

seen being understood from what has been

made in other words God created so that

we might enjoy his creation

and so enjoy him more

and for those of you in in here this

this afternoon who are kids children I

know that many of you often have amazing

questions about God's creation and

that's a that's a good thing it's a a

wonderful thing to have questions and I

would just encourage you to ask your

parents about your questions whatever

you want to ask about elephants and

planets and dinosaurs and sunsets and

snowflakes ask them and as you ask them

remember that God is the one who stands

behind each of those things God made all

of those things

and if you ask your parents what each of

those things teach us about God I'm

confident that that's a question they

would love to answer

so we see here that God is powerful

but fourth we also see that God is

present

God is present

present you know sometimes when we talk

about sovereigns we talk about kings and

queens we're talking about people who

are relatively absent from our lives

maybe even their their absent from the

countries that they rule over maybe a

monarch doesn't even live in the country

that they rule over

but friends in the Bible

God's sovereignty means

God's presence

God's sovereignty means God's presence

just look at verse two

says the Earth was without form and void

and darkness was over the face of the

deep and the spirit of God was hovering

over the face of the waters

verse 2 shows us that even at the

beginning of creation while it was still

formless and void

God was present with his creation

that word hover there in verse two is

it's used again in Deuteronomy chapter

32 verse 11 where it speaks of an eagle

hovering over its young to protect and

nurture it and that's exactly what the

spirit of God is doing in these verses

all this talk that that we've been

discussing this this afternoon about

God's Supremacy and his pre-existence

and his power that might give you the

idea that that God is a controlling

impersonal mechanical force

that's not what the Bible teaches

God's sovereignty is deeply personal God

is separate from his creation he rules

over his creation but God is present

with his creation

he's present to protect and nurture in

fact earlier I mentioned that there were

two reasons that God created the world I

want to give you the second reason now

the second reason that God created the

world

just out of an overflow of love

that's why God created Mankind in a

special way

in chapter 1 verses 26 to 30. where it

talks there about how God created

mankind In His Image God uniquely

created us in His image and if you

notice in those verses he blessed us and

then he gave us all things in creation

to rule over we're not going to go into

detail on those verses

but these are important verses

they tell us that God created us in a

special way and I just want to say that

the fact that he created us uniquely

special

demonstrates the Overflow of Love That

animated his creation work

he loves us and everything that he

created though it was for his glory is

also in some way for us

for you and for me

and even now he remains present with

this creation that he so loves he's

intimately caring for it he's watching

over it he's sustaining it and he's

sustaining us he's omnipresent which

means that he's everywhere and yet he's

uniquely present according to the Bible

with those who are in Christ that means

he's uniquely present even with us this

afternoon

[Music]

so Christians for those of you who trust

in Jesus

you should not ever think that God is

absent from you or that he doesn't care

about you or that he's ignoring you

God is particularly present with you if

you are in Christ

you may not always feel that way

but regardless of how you feel

God is present to bless and love and

provide and preserve and to sustain and

help all those who are in Christ

it's a good reason to trust in our

Sovereign God even this afternoon

but Point number five what else do we

see about God's sovereignty in Genesis 1

we see that God's word

works

God's word

so in verses 3 to 31 God's creation acts

unfold over six days and you'll notice

there's a clear pattern for each of

these days God speaks

something happens

and God pronounces it good that happens

over and over and over again so just for

example verses three to five God says

let there be light

or you can look at verses 9 and 10 God

creates the land and the Seas and God

says let the water under the sky be

gathered to one place and let ground

appear and it was so exactly as God said

it

this pattern of God speaking and then

something happening that doesn't just

apply to his acts of creation either so

again notice that God's word also

separates light from darkness in verse

four and God's word separates the Earth

from the sky in verse seven God's word

we see here not only creates it

separates

where God creates plants in verses 11 to

12 and see animals and birds in verses

20 to 23 and land animals in verses 24

to 25. you'll notice that God not only

speaks these creatures into existence he

instructs them to reproduce after their

own kind which is something that they do

it's the same with Mankind in verses 26

to 31 except there God gives them

another instruction to rule over his

so we see from these verses that God's

word creates

it separates

and we see that it also empowers it

gives the power of reproduction to

animals and plants it gives the power of

reproduction and authority to man

because the point is is that God's word

does things

God's word is powerful

God's word works

we see in Genesis 1 that when God

intends his word to do something

that thing happens every time

and we see this all throughout scripture

all throughout scripture God's word

Works God's word creates and it

initiates and it promises and it

empowers and it gives life and it

transforms God's word is effective

but do you understand what a blessing it

is for us to have God's word

pray fervently for Grace City this is

one of the things that we pray for you

all for regularly pray that Grace City

will have a strong commitment to God's

word

what I mean by that is we pray that

Grace City should always be committed to

the belief that God will use his word to

grow Us in Grace and preserve us in

Christ

you know the the weekly preaching of

God's word in the context of the church

that is the primary means that God has

given

to sustain our faith and to grow Us in

faith

that's the primary means that the Lord

has given for good in our life

and we have to fight to have confidence

that as long as God's word is being

preached week in and week out

God will give us what we need

spiritually

what you need when you come here week in

and week out is not for preachers to

kind of give you their thoughts on life

if I came here and just gave you my

thoughts on life you wouldn't find it

all that interesting and probably I'd

make your life worse

and what you need is to come here week

in and week out and receive the only

thing that works

you don't need your preachers to be

funny or clever or creative or Punchy or

relevant I mean hopefully those things

come out sometimes but what you really

need from your preachers is for the

point of God's word to be the point of

the sermon text

and then you need to trust that God will

use that word in your life for good

now because God's word works

it's also good for us to read God's word

just in our daily life the Bible may not

answer every question we have we may

find God's word boring sometimes we may

struggle to find time to read it

but the problem in each of these cases

is not God's word

it's us

God's word will always do what God

intends for it which means that we need

to work hard to go to God's word with

the right questions we need to work hard

to understand it better so that we don't

find it boring and we need to make time

to read it now I've found that the best

way to overcome each of these problems

is to begin reading God's word with

somebody else if you struggle to read

God's word in your daily life just

encourage you to read it with somebody

else

maybe ask another member of this church

to meet up with you to read God's word

together that's something you could do

at dinner on Sunday afternoons or lunch

before church something you could do

throughout the week or maybe you can

even set up a zoom call and just once a

week gather together read God's word

together and talk about it there's

something you can do with your family

just read a a few evenings a week read a

few lines from God's word and talk about

friends this is important because I

believe that when you look

in the rear view mirror of your life one

rather than what's directly in front of

you

you're gonna find that it was primarily

God's word that sustains you

now what I mean by that is that

regardless of what you may feel in the

moment regardless of what you may feel

moment to moment in your life the

perspective of years is going to clarify

for you that God's word Works to sustain

you and keep you persevering in the

word works we also see number six

God's sovereignty means that he is Judge

God is the judge

we see that clearly in Genesis 1 I think

think about this pattern that we see in

in these verses again God speaks

and God pronounces it good

now that repeated declaration it is good

it was good God saw that it was good see

that in verse 10 verse 12 verse 18 verse

21 verse 24 and in verse 31 we see that

God saw that it was very good all of

that is a judgment from God God is

making a judgment about what he has

and when we meditate on this repeated

refrain I think there are a lot of

lessons for us in this

one lesson

is that God gets to decide what is good

and what is not good

God is the Supreme standard of what is

good

God has not left it up to us to decide

when something is good or not

in fact since we are sinners we're not

very good judges of what is good at all

our definitions of good change Through

the Ages but God's Judgment of good

never changes

brother and sisters I just wonder it's a

really important question I think for

you to think about

do you ever allow God's definition of

what is good

to contradict your own

or do you assume that you're always

right

that you always know what is loving what

is righteous what is just

and what is good

see if God's word never confronts you

ever if it never challenges you

ever if it never contradicts what you

define as good or offends your

conception of what is good it's possible

that you're not reading God's word

accurately you're not reading it with

humility

you know God's word speaks into

topics that are very controversial today

I mean Genesis alone talks about gender

and marriage and sexuality and work and

rest

Genesis demonstrates God's Authority as

well as his response as the judge over

human sin

and God's word God tells us what he is

like and a lot of times it isn't exactly

what we think he should be like

friends we need to prepare ourselves now

we are not the judge on any of these

we are not the judge of what is good

are you prepared to fully submit to

God's word even when it contradicts your

culture

even when it contradicts you

God is the judge we see that in Genesis

chapter one

and then finally

0.7

we see that God's sovereignty means that

his work is good

God's work

is good

so we've seen God's repeated refrain

that his creation is good but just

consider the trajectory of God's work in

Genesis 1. look again at at verse 2.

it says the Earth was without form and

void and and darkness was over the face

of the deep

formless it's empty

it's void kind of sounds like a problem

doesn't it it's kind of like uh your

child's unfinished craft it's really not

all that exciting uh it's not that

interesting you may be hanging on the

fridge anyways because you love them but

it's not that good

that's kind of what was going on in

verse two it's formless it's void it's

it's empty

and yet in this chapter God overcomes

the problem of formlessness and

emptiness so you just scan over the

first three days verses 3 to 13

describes the first three days says

notice that God creates light and then

he separates it from Darkness then he

creates the sky and he separates that

from the waters then he gathers the

water into one place and he creates the

dry ground do you see how in these first

three days God fixes that first problem

of formlessness

and then you can scan through days four

and six verses 14 to 31 and note that

God fixes the problem of emptiness here

God begins to fill up the Earth

he creates the sea creatures and then

the birds and then the animals and then

Mankind and he tells each of these

creatures to be fruitful and and

multiply

I mean do you see how thoroughly and

creatively God solves the problems of

emptiness and formlessness

and the result is a pronouncement in day

seven

before day seven that all was very good

and then on day seven God rests

Church The God Who worked so well in

is the same God who is now at work in

you in Christ

the same power that was on display in

Genesis 1

is the power that is at work in you who

are in Christ

what God has done in creation

is a pattern for his new creation

see because of the death and

resurrection of Christ God is creating a

new creation of which all who trust in

Jesus are apart so just consider what

happened

when God saved you Christian

Paul tells us about the day that God

saved us in second Corinthians chapter 4

verse 6. Paul thinks about Genesis 1 in

that verse he says for God who said let

light shine out of Darkness made his

light shine in our hearts to give us the

light of the knowledge of God's glory

displayed in the face of Christ so God

saved you

and in Saving you the power that was at

work and creation

was at work in you

when the light of God Shone into your

heart and your Christian life began and

on that day you were immediately saved

you were forgiven you were Justified

but of course we all know that there's

still sin in our life isn't there sin

continues to affect our hearts and our

minds the reality of death haunts our

fears maybe the the burdens of our sin

and fears and our deceptive Hearts maybe

maybe those are things that are weighing

heavily even on your mind this afternoon

and you think if I'm a Christian I'm I'm

a weak and pathetic one

if I'm a Christian you think I'm I'm

formless I'm empty

dear brother and dear sister look at

what God can do with a formless and

empty

today our Sovereign Creator is our

Sovereign Redeemer and he promises to

save you through faith in Christ and

sustain you and everything he does

he does well

what will be the end result

of his forming and filling in your life

Romans 8 29 tells us for those God

foreknew he also predestined to be

conformed to the image of his son dear

brother and dear sister in Christ the

one true God

is The Sovereign Creator ruler and

sustainer of all that exists and all of

his power is at work in you

even now

and his power

when it is at work

it does good things

Our Father in heaven we praise you that

we can trust that you are a God who does

all things well

and we are comforted this afternoon and

we praise you this afternoon that you

are at work in US

to preserve our faith and keep us going

Lord we pray that we would leave here

with a greater understanding of who you

are as our Sovereign creator

help us leave here marveling about your

power and wonder and might

and we pray all these things Lord in

Jesus name amen

","":"
["GET
