all this in Jesus name amen

so we're getting started back in our

series on Ecclesiastes and so I want to

give an overview since we've taken a

little break from it so what is going on

in the book we're given a clue in the

conclusion of Ecclesiastes so if you

have your Bibles you can turn with me

there to Ecclesiastes 12 verses 11

through 14.

and we'll read those

the words of the wise are like goads and

like nails firmly fixed are the

collected sayings they are given by one

Shepherd

and my son beware of anything beyond

these of making many books there is no

end and much study is a weariness of the

flesh the end of the matter all has been

heard fear God and keep his Commandments

for this is the whole duty of man for

God will bring every deed into judgment

with every secret thing whether good or

evil

in January of 2021 our family was

getting ready to come over to Thailand

covered was still going on and so there

were a lot of um

flying policies or restrictions and

there was a risk that if one of us got

coveted then that person who got it

would have to be separated whenever we

got here

and so Carly was six months pregnant

with Madison we had a four-year-old Macy

and so I knew that quarantine was not a

good idea it just would not go well for

our family and so what I did was I went

on the internet and found the scariest

pictures that I could of children who

were in the hospital these children

didn't have covid but I used these

pictures and I showed them to Macy I

said this could happen to you if you get

coveted

and so what I was trying to do with

these pictures was to use them as

examples to show her what could happen

to her if she got covered and I did this

with the hopes that it would produce a

fear in her to keep her from putting her

hands into her mouth and to keep our

family from having to be split apart

during quarantine

in chapter 12 verse 12 the writer of

Ecclesiastes addressed the person he is

writing to as my son

this is a father who is instructing his

son how to pursue true wisdom how to

pursue true meaning how to pursue true

knowledge

he gives his son both a negative and a

positive instruction he first gives him

a negative instruction in that he warns

his son against pursuing wisdom from a

speculative or worldly worldview that is

detached from the reverent fear of God

and Trust in his word

so how how does he do this

he does the same thing that I did with

Macy he gives him an example of someone

who tried this and shows him the result

of the way of pursuing wisdom through a

worldly worldview

and so the Book of Ecclesiastes caused

this person the preacher

we learn about the preacher and his

search for wisdom in chapter 1 verses 12

through 14. Ecclesiastes 1 12-14 we read

I the preacher have been King over

Israel in Jerusalem and I applied my

heart to seek and to search out by

wisdom all that is done under Heaven it

is an unhappy business that God has

given to the children of man to be busy

with

I have seen everything that is done

under the sun and behold all his vanity

and a striving after wind

and so in the Book of Ecclesiastes we

have

Ecclesiastes 1 12 through 12 7 and we're

given an account of the preacher seeking

after wisdom

Dr Miles Van Pelt calls what takes place

in this section of Ecclesiastes a wisdom

experiment

and so the Book of Ecclesiastes uses

this phrase Under the Sun or under

heaven to describe the preacher's

and this phrase is used 29 times in the

book so if the author of the book wants

us to know one thing it's this it's that

the preacher the main figure in

his worldview is one that is under the

sun

and then Under the Sun worldview is one

that leaves the the correct

understanding of God and from God out of

everything

and so I think Miles label of wisdom

experiment kind of helps us to

understand the preacher's approach and

his method to finding wisdom

when I think of an experiment I think of

a scientist in a white coat in a lab who

has glass beakers he's putting things in

to the beakers and he's looking to see

what the result is he's looking to find

meaning in all of these experiments

and so the preacher in a similar way is

saying everything from an Earthly

perspective and he seeks to pursue his

wisdom from his own observations from

his own understanding of the Earthly

realm and so he goes out into the world

he experiences things observes things

and uses his own heart his own

rationale his own faculties what he

calls his own wisdom to make sense of

life

and we learn about his approach to

finding wisdom in chapter 1 verses 16

through 17 and chapter 2 verses 1-3

and 1 16-17 it says I said in my heart I

have acquired great wisdom surpassing

all who were over Jerusalem before me

and my heart has had great experience of

wisdom and knowledge and I applied my

heart to no wisdom and to know Madness

and Folly I perceive that this also is

but striving after the wind

and in chapter 1 verses 1 through 3 he

says I said in my heart come now I will

test you with pleasure enjoy yourself

but behold this also was vanity I said

of laughter it is mad and of pleasure

what use is it I search with my heart

how to cheer my body with wine my heart

still guiding me with wisdom and how to

lay hold on Folly till I might see what

was good for the children of man to do

under Heaven during the few days of

their life

and so the preacher is using his heart

to test all these different areas in

life he's examining things using his own

understanding and his own knowledge that

comes from an Under the Sun perspective

to interpret his findings

and so his inclusion from the experiment

is found in chapter 1 2 and 12 8.

he says vanity of vanity says a preacher

all is Vanity

and so this phrase it sandwiches this

wisdom experiment that Miles van pellet

likes to call it and so it comes right

before it to give the readers

expectation of what's going to happen as

the preacher searches for wisdom and it

gives a conclusion to let you know what

he found out

and so Ecclesiastes it's meant to bring

you to a point where you feel the same

despair that the preacher fell in his

results

it's designed to make you feel like the

the mad scientist who's pulled out all

of his hair because he's not able to

draw satisfying conclusions from his

and it's designed to discourage you from

seeking wisdom from a worldly worldview

and using your own faculties your own

heart to interpret the meaning of life

the father who's writing this book is

telling his son don't look to your own

reasoning capabilities to guide you in

wisdom do not speculate about what

wisdom is if you do then you could end

up like the preacher who is despondent

and very far from wisdom

the father gives up a positive

instruction after giving the negative

instruction after showing us what has

happened to the preacher

in 12 13 he tells us

fear God and keep his Commandments for

this is the whole duty of man

and so the father encourages his son to

seek with wisdom from a heart that fears

the Lord and looks to the Lord to guide

him by his words

the majority of the Book of Ecclesiastes

is the preacher experiencing things

observing something looking at it from

an under the world worldview given the

results of what he's found and then

giving advice on how to apply it to life

and so that is what he's doing here in

chapter 7. and so we'll look at that

we'll look at how the preacher views

certain things from and life Under the

Sun worldview and then we'll look at how

the father

we'll use the father's instructions for

us to fear God and to keep his

Commandments and look at the same thing

from above the sun world view

so let's now look at chapter 7 verses 15

through 29.

in my vain life I have seen everything

there is a righteous man who perishes in

his righteousness and there is a wicked

man who prolongs his life in evil doing

be not overly righteous and do not make

yourself too wise why should you destroy

yourself be not overly Wicked neither be

a fool why should you die before your

time

it is good that you should take hold of

this and from that withhold not your

hand for the one who fears God shall

come out from both of them wisdom gives

strength to the wise man more than 10

rulers who are in the city surely there

is not a righteous man on Earth who does

good and never sins do not take the

heart all the things that people say at

least you hear your servant cursing you

your heart knows that many times you

yourself have cursed others all this

I've tested my wisdom I said I will be

wise but it was far from me

that which has been as far off and deep

very deep

who can find it out

I turn my hearts and no and to search

out and to seek wisdom in the scheme of

things and to know the wickedness of

folly and the foolishness that is

madness

and I'll find something more bitter than

death the woman whose heart is snares

and Nets and whose hands are Fetters

he who pleases God escapes her but the

sinner is taken by her behold this is

what I found says the preacher while

adding one thing to another to find the

scheme of things

which my soul has sought repeatedly but

I have not found

one man among a thousand I found but a

woman among all these I have not have

found

see this alone I found that God made man

upright but they have sought out many

schemes

and so in verse 15 we see that the

preacher is telling us

and so we have to remember that the

preacher's method of finding wisdom is

to go and observe things in the world

it's this wisdom experiment that he's

talking about he is saying I went out

and I searched everything under the sun

to try to find wisdom

and what does he observe

he sees that there is a righteous man

who perishes in his righteousness

and there is a wicked man who prolongs

his life in evil doing

and so the preacher observes this life

of a righteous man and he Compares it

with the life of a wicked man and he

finds some of the righteous have

perished in their righteousness I'm sure

we can all bring to mind examples of

those that we know either from history

or from the news of righteous people who

have lost their lives doing what was

morally right

an example that many of you may be

familiar with is William Tyndale

Tyndall was one of the first Bible

translators to translate the Bible into

English

during this time it was illegal to do so

if you didn't have the permission of the

church authorities

during this time Tyndale was translating

the Bible into English he was also

speaking against false doctrines in the

church and he was claiming doctrines

like justification by faith alone

and so what happened is that Tyndale

went to trial for heresy and eventually

he was put to death for his beliefs

Tyndale died for doing what was right

and good by trying to protect the

doctrines of the church and to provide

the people of God with their own copies

of God's word

and so the preacher also observed a

wicked man who prolongs his life and his

evil doing and so it's not only that the

wicked have a long life it's that they

prolonged their life through their

wickedness

so what wisdom and advice does the

preacher give to understand the

preacher's advice I think it's important

to understand how he views life and

death from an Under the Sun perspective

and so we see that in Ecclesiastes 9 3-6

it says this is an evil in all that is

done under the sun that the same event

happens to all also the hearts of the

children of man are full of evil and

madnesses in their hearts while they

live and after that they go to the dead

but he who is joined with all the living

has hope for a living dog is better than

a dead lion

for the living know that they will die

but the dead know nothing and they have

no more reward

for the memory of them is forgotten

their love and their hate and their Envy

have already perished

and forever they have no more share in

all that is done under the sun

and so for the preacher life is

meaningless we've already seen that by

the bookends of his experiments vanity

of vanities everything is Vanity but

when you look at life as a whole life is

still a better option than an

alternative which is death

so once you leave this life you have no

more reward or no more hope of reward

for this life because you're not here

anymore

and so if you look at the way the the

preacher describes the the afterlife in

the Book of Ecclesiastes it's very vague

and it's very pessimistic

he thinks your focus should be on this

life since you once you lose your life

in this life you have no reward and you

really can't know what the next life

holds for you and so if your dad you

don't have the opportunity to enjoy the

pleasures of God that God sometimes

gives you while on Earth

and so the wicked Behavior has provided

a gain in term of Life the righteous

man's behavior has provided a loss in

terms of life and so gain is another

theme that is talked about in The Book

of Ecclesiastes the preacher is

constantly trying to seek gain because

he thinks that gain leads to wisdom and

so you see the preacher he is weighing

things out he weighs wisdom and Folly he

weighs hope versus despair Rich versus

poor the preacher often acts like a

merchant who is always looking for what

will give him gain in this life and so

he's found a little gain in extending

his life

what advice does he give from the Under

the Sun perspective

7 16 we read do not be overly righteous

and do not make yourself too wise why

should you destroy yourself

and this is one of those passages where

you sit back and you say what is going

on here he says do not be overly

righteous how can he say that this

doesn't fit with the rest of scripture

you have to remember that he is speaking

from an Under the Sun perspective on

life and he understands what he

understands is what he observes what he

experiences and understands from an

Under the Sun perspective and as we saw

in 9 3-5 from an Under the Sun

perspective a person's life is utmost

important if you lose your life there is

no more opportunity for reward

so you don't want to be overly righteous

because that gets you into trouble

the preacher would have told William

Tyndale

let's just hold off on Translating that

Bible into English let's just hold off

on you speaking against these false

doctrines in the church let's just put

everything in a book into Memoirs and

whenever you pass away we'll just send

it to the Press then

you're 30 years old you don't want your

righteous actions to cut your life short

the preacher then looks at Other Extreme

which is wickedness and gives advice

about it in 717 he says be not overly

Wicked neither be a fool why should you

die before your time

the wicked prolonged their life through

their wickedness and so if you're

looking to preserve your life then it's

okay to be Wicked but at the same time

he recognizes that being overly Wicked

can get you into trouble and also

endanger your life and so if you're

going to be Wicked be wise about being

Wicked and don't be too Wicked if you

steal and get caught you could lose your

life so be cautious what you steal and

don't steal too much it's okay to be to

tell little lie but don't tell a big lie

because you could go to jail for it and

you could end up losing your life in

jail

and in 718 he tells us it is good that

you should take hold of this and from

that withhold not your hand for the one

who fears God shall come out from both

of them so the key to preserving your

life is to take both of these hold both

a life of righteousness and a life of

wickedness don't be overly righteous

don't be overly Wicked kind of take a

middle of the road approach

and if you look at the righteous

perishing and the evil prolonging their

life from an Under the Sun perspective

where you don't view morality from the

way that God views it then you conclude

that morality is just a tool you can use

to possibly prolong your life

let's look now at the above the sum

perspective that the father tells his

son to take

and this is what he says the end of the

matter all has been heard fear God keep

his Commandments for this is the whole

duty of man

and so the father is saying to his son

seeking wisdom is pretty simple fear the

lord and keep his Commandments Revere

the Lord and Look to Him to guide you in

wisdom by his word do this and you will

find wisdom and so this is the opposite

approach that the preacher who is

allowing his own wisdom and looking at

things from a Under the Sun perspective

has used to guide him in wisdom

so let's look first at where the value

of wisdom comes from

for the preacher looking at things from

an Under the Sun perspective the value

of righteousness is found in the Earthly

benefit it can bring

which is a prolonged Earthly life

so where is the value of being righteous

found for those who haven't above the

sun perspective

is found in what God created us to be

and what God created us to do

so what did how did he create us

in Genesis 1 27 it says God created man

in his own image in the image of God he

created him male and female he created

them

what did God create us to do

in First Corinthians 10 31 we read so

whether you eat or drink or whatever you

do do all to the glory of God

and so God created us in His image to

image forth his character in the world

to bring him glory

we were created and commanded to show

the world what God's amazing character

is like

God created people righteous to show all

of creation a glimpse of his great

righteousness

so the for the Christian the ultimate

value of righteousness is not found in

the Earthly gain that it can bring to a

person

but in the glory it can bring to the God

of all creation

the preacher has such a small and a

limited worldview that's focused on man

but for the child of God who has an

above the sun perspective his mind is

set on things above in particular on God

In His glory

and when we do what God commands us from

the heart of reverence and love for God

we glorify him and in the case of being

righteous we show to the creation what

God is like and he gets the glory for it

so when you are faced with a situation

of doing what is right that might bring

you Earthly gain or bring God glory how

will you wisely respond

you're not charged an item on your

receipt at the grocery store what will

you do

no one from the store knows or ever will

know

it's very hot outside so you don't want

to walk back into the store

will you take an Under the Sun

perspective and allow it to guide you or

will you take an above the sun

perspective and allow the fear of God

and reverence for God and his knowledge

and the knowledge of his word that

stealing is wrong to guide you to

glorify God in your actions

God doesn't allow for a middle of the

road approach to righteousness

life can get pretty exciting when you

are driving in Thailand

the hardest part for me about driving

here is the motorcycles you're driving

down the road and you turn around or you

look in your rearview mirror to see

what's behind you and there's nothing

back there

you turn around again and then turn back

around in a few seconds and there are

two motorcycles behind you you look

again to the front there are five there

are two on your left on your right

you're going up a bridge it's very

narrow

so motorcycles are very difficult to

know how to drive with in Thailand and

motorcyclists they love to drive down

the the center lane

and so what they do is they'll drive

down the center of Lane and so whenever

they see one car they'll weave over to

the the next Lane and they'll keep

working back weaving back and forth

dodging cars and so this is the approach

that the the preacher is is telling

people to take but when it comes to

righteousness and wickedness try to stay

on the center line between righteousness

and wickedness don't go too far to one

side only go as far as needed to stay

alive

but God's word it plainly tells us that

as Christians we shouldn't try to live

in both the road of righteousness and

the road of wickedness you can't travel

down the center lane alternating between

these two God's word tells us that he is

light and in him no darkness is found

to be in God's image to be his image

Bearer it means that we are called to

represent God's character to God's world

we are called to be like him

to try to alternate between the way of

the righteous and the way the wicked is

called trying to be lukewarm

and what does the Lord say about those

who try this he says I will spit you out

of my mouth

Psalm 1 makes it clear that there are

two ways to live The Way of the Wicked

and the way of the righteous you must

choose one or the other God tells us to

choose the way of the righteous

we've looked at the value of

righteousness and compared the Under the

Sun perspective with the above the sun

perspective let's look now at the

difference in how these two perspectives

view life and death

so when we look at chapter 9 verses

three through five the Under the Sun

perspective life is meaningless but you

have a little value because only the

living are able to enjoy the reward of

which is things in life that are capable

of bringing Joy like eating and drinking

and working so the physical life of a

person is seen as ultimate in a way

if you're not living you can't

experience the things of this life and

so life is to be seen as better than

death

and I think this really is the the

dominant worldview and our culture today

so for most people life is about

consuming and enjoying the things of

this world

um as long as they can and so the the

thought goes something like this I want

to stay in this world as long as I can

to seek Joy from the things of this

world I want to experience all this

world has to offer and find fulfillment

in the things of the world

and there have been billions of dollars

spent on prolonging life through

supplements and life-extending

procedures

and so death is not welcomed from an

Under the Sun perspective and encourages

those who are wise to put it off as long

as possible

what is the above the sun perspective on

life the value of life doesn't come from

us being able to consume things and to

enjoy things of this world the value of

Life comes from who made us and whose we

are

life is valuable and precious because we

are God's creation

we are gods and because we belong to him

we are valuable

God cares about life because he created

everything and it is his and so there's

this this intrinsic worth that is found

in all living things because of this

as we have already talked about creation

reflects God's glory it shows how

wonderful he is he's an amazing creator

we should have the same view of life and

place the same value on life that God

does

life is not vain it's not meaningless or

empty as the preacher tries to portray

it

are above the sun perspective should

influence how we think and live in a

world that causes or um encourages the

the valuing of life

I have a Christian friend who's in the

states and every Saturday you can find

him at an abortion clinic in Augusta

Georgia he goes to

talk and to reason with women who are

there to have an abortion

and he shares with them that life that

they carry in them is worth

something because it's God's creation

It's Made In God's image and belongs to

him

and so

from an above the sound perspective

life is precious

but it's not ultimate

like is is in the under to some

perspective

in fact in a way death is welcomed by

the Christian

Paul tells us in Philippians 1 21 for to

me to live as Christ and to die is gain

and so life is precious and we should

seek to promote our life and the life of

others while on Earth

but at the same time death is not to be

feared it's not to be dreaded by the

Christian

as we were reminded last week Jesus has

conquered death as we just sang Jesus

has conquered death and so the goal in

life is not to prolong life so that we

can enjoy the things of the world is to

glorify God

and when it comes to living a righteous

life we pursue righteousness no matter

what the cost because we want to bring

glory to God by being like him and we

know that a better life awaits us

the joy that we will experience in the

presence of Jesus will be so much better

than anything that we can experience on

this Earth

the reason the preacher didn't set out

the the two Pathways of righteousness

and wickedness and say choose one is

because

he viewed life and he saw righteousness

and everything else from an Under the

Sun perspective perspective and so from

an Under the Sun perspective he

speculates about what might be going on

in life and he gives advice from this

speculation

what he found to understand because of

his Under the Sun perspective is that

the life that the books of Psalms and

Proverbs talk about that speak of life

is a ultimately a spiritual life found

from being in a relationship with God

the righteousness the righteous in life

in this life and then the next who have

life in Christ will experience life in

Jesus we experience it now we have peace

and joy and loving God that nothing not

even death can take away

the wicked are cut off from experiencing

these things and thus do not have True

Life As We Understand from the above the

the preacher goes on to talk about what

he has found and not found on his quest

for wisdom

he says all this I have tested my wisdom

I said I will be wise

but it is far from me

very deep who can find it out

in verses 27-28

he says behold this is what I found says

the preacher while adding one thing to

another to find the scheme of things

which my soul salt repeatedly but I have

not found

the preacher has sought wisdom and in

particular to understand things and why

life is as it is commits his inability

to find these two

the preacher by taking an under some

perspective and look into himself to

find what is wise has prevented himself

from finding true wisdom

and this is what the father has warning

his son about and is warning us about

a person's Only Hope for finding true

wisdom is to listen and live out the

father's positive instruction to his son

which is to fear the lord and Trust in

his word

the preacher's inability to find wisdom

should be a caution to us trying to find

wisdom any other way than fearing the

Lord and allowing his commands to guide

us

God has given us his word as a guide to

help us understand life and how to

navigate through it

Psalm 119 105 tells us your word is a

lamp to my feet and a light to my path

the fear of the Lord it puts us in a

posture to receive God's wisdom and

God's word guides us to it without these

two we will be wandering in the dark

grasping for wisdom grasping for meaning

of life only to find that we can't Truly

find it

don't try to find meaning in life and

wisdom on your own like the preacher did

examining life without any Revelation

from the Lord is like trying to find a

needle in the haystack in the dark

the preacher tells us that while he

didn't find wisdom on his on his quest

he did find something else

in 7 26-29 we read and I find something

more bitter than death the woman whose

heart is snares and Nets and whose hands

are Fetters he who pleases God escapes

her but the sinner is taken by her

behold this is what I found says the

preacher while adding one thing to

I have not found one man among a

thousand I found but a woman among these

I have not found see this I found that

God made man upright but they have

sought out many schemes

and so the preacher found out through

his observation of mankind that mankind

is sinful that life is messed up that we

are not good we are wicked the preacher

doesn't really offer any hope though for

mankind here because he's looking at

things from an Under the Sun perspective

but when we apply the father's positive

instruction to fear the lord and to

trust his word to guide us and we look

at the son the Son of God the wisdom we

find in him completely changes our

perspective on everything

when we look at the world as broken as

sinful as messed up as it may be

with an Under the Sun perspective

s-o-n we find meaning we find purpose

and we find Hope

I'm nearsighted so I have a problem

seeing things far away

but I can see things very close up and

when I look at things at a certain

distance everything becomes blurry I

can't make out the shape of objects

everything looks like it's in a haze or

in a fog and when I put on the

prescription glasses that a qualified

medical doctor has prescribed for me

everything suddenly becomes clear

I can make out objects and distinguish

colors at a far distance

things suddenly make sense

the Lord has told us and shown Us in the

Book of Ecclesiastes that wisdom comes

from him we are not going to be able to

figure things out on our own and those

who look at the world from a worldly

perspective and try to use their own

ability to speculate and try to figure

out things will end up confused and

they'll end up despondent like the

preacher

God has given us his word that is like a

pair of prescription glasses and so we

must filter the world through the lens

of scripture

if we want to understand things

correctly if you want to make sense of

this broken world that you live in and

know how to live in it wisely then take

the heart the simple instruction that

the father gives to his son fear God and

obey his commands

brothers and sisters let us look to the

Lord and his word to guide us

wisdom comes from the Lord

let's pray

dear heavenly father we thank you so

much for the Book of Ecclesiastes we

thank you that you have given up to us

to teach us about how to pursue wisdom

we thank you for all that you teach us

in it we pray that you will be with us

as we search out how to live a wise life

is tempting to look at the world around

us and try to figure things out on our

own

to want to test all the world has to

offer to see if we can find some meaning

or wisdom outside of you

we have seen where this worldview leads

as we saw in our text this morning the

preacher never found the meaning in

understanding he saw

his result is despondency and

meaningless

help us to look to you your commands

your words to be a lamp into our feet

and a light into our path to guide us in

wisdom we ask all this
