everyone hear the translation okay

okay

all right so hello everybody hope your

weeks have been well

as you may be able to tell from standing

outside

it's been extremely hot out except for

today

today it rained pretty hard

but the past few months it's been really

hot

and I know for me walking from home to

church feels like I'm gonna melt

and although it feels that way

it doesn't surprise us because we all

know that April and May are the hottest

months of the year

so that's something we know we know that

at the beginning of the year most of us

knew what to expect that in April and

May it's going to be really hot the heat

will be unpleasant

but it's unpleasant and predictable

we knew that it was going to happen

however as we will see today

Ecclesiastes tells us that life is

actually very unpredictable

and things don't usually go according to

plan

like today it rained really hard today

um so we're looking at chapter 9

Ecclesiastes chapter 9

and I'll read the text to us in English

next slide please

Ecclesiastes chapter 9. so I reflected

on all this and concluded that the

righteous and the wise and what they do

are in God's hands but no one knows

whether love or hate awaits them all

share a common Destiny the righteous and

the Wicked the good and the bad the

clean and the unclean those who offer

sacrifices and those who do not as it is

with the good so with the sinful as it

is with those who take Oaths so with

those who are afraid to take them this

is the evil and everything that happens

Under the Sun the same Destiny overtakes

all

the hearts of people moreover are full

of evil there is madness in their hearts

while they live and afterwards they join

the dead anyone who is among the living

has hope even a live dog is better off

than a deadline

for the living know that they will die

but the dead know nothing they have no

further reward and even their name is

forgotten

their love their hate and their jealousy

have long since vanished never again

will they have a part in anything that

happens under the sun go eat your food

with gladness and drink your wine with a

joyful heart for God has already

approved what you do

always be clothed in white always anoint

in your head with oil

enjoy life with your wife whom you love

all the days

of this meaningless life that God has

given you under the sun all your

meaningless days

for this is your lot in life

and in your toilsome labor under the sun

whatever your hand finds to do do it

with all your might for in the realm of

the Dead where you are going there is

neither working nor planning nor

knowledge nor wisdom I have seen

something else Under the Sun the race is

not to the Swift or the battle to the

strong nor does food come to the wise or

wealth to the brilliant or favor to the

Learned but time and chance happen to

them all

moreover no one knows when their hour

will come as fish are caught in a cruel

net or birds are taken in a snare so

people are trapped by evil times that

fall unexpectedly upon them

I also saw Under the Sun this example of

wisdom that greatly impressed me there

was once a small City with only a few

people in it and a powerful King came

against it surrounded it and built huge

Siege works against it now they lived in

this city a man poor but wise and he

saved the City by his wisdom but nobody

remembered that poor man

so said wisdom is better than strength

but the poor man's Wisdom is despised

and his words are no longer heated the

quiet words of the wise are more to be

heated than the shouts of a ruler of

fools wisdom is better than weapons of

war but one sinner destroys much good

this is the word of God

so as we're pretty familiar with by now

since we've been going through our

Series in Ecclesiastes Ecclesiastes is a

book like none other

there is no other book in the Bible that

is quite like Ecclesiastes because

Ecclesiastes is a thought experiment

it's a way of looking at life that says

if this life is all there is this is

what life would be like

so one common phrase throughout the book

is Under the Sun and while we may read

that and think oh Heat

it's actually a way to talk about life

without God life under the sun

so in verse 3

it says it doesn't say life is

meaningless it says life Under the Sun

is meaningless this is the evil that

happens under the sun

Ecclesiastes is a book that looks at

life as if this life is all there is

and the Viewpoint that the author is

taking is very similar to the Viewpoint

of the average person living in Bangkok

that this life is all there is

that the only way to find fulfillment

in this life is only in this life

whether that's through work through

relationships through money success that

there is nothing else Beyond this life

and in this chapter which has been

called by some the most depressing

chapter in the whole book of

Ecclesiastes is this the most depressing

chapter According to some people the

main question that the author is asking

is

if this life is all there is

how do we live in the world full of

Injustice and Evil

many of us have experienced Injustice we

have either gone through some degree of

Injustice ourselves or we've seen our

loved ones go through it we don't have

to look very far to see the Injustice in

this world

anytime we say we see and say the world

is not a fair place we're talking about

Injustice

and the author wants us to confront this

issue how do we live in the world of

so in verses 11 and 12

the author speaks of how the world is

not fair in a general sense

he says

the race is not to the Swift or the

battle to the strong nor does food come

to the wise or wealth to the brilliant

or favor to the Learned but time and

chance happen to them all moreover no

one knows when there are will come as

fish are caught in a cruel net or birds

are taken in a snare so people are

trapped by evil times that fall

unexpectedly upon them what does that

mean

just a few months ago in nambolampu an

ex-policeman murdered over 20 children

in Cold Blood

during songkran there was a shooting at

a pub not too far from here

just last week 13 people died in India

because of a heat stroke

2004 disaster struck the coastal areas

of the Indian Ocean the earthquake and

tsunami killing over 220 000 people in

14 different countries including

Thailand

and last year a record number of over

100 100 million people were displaced

becoming refugees forced to leave their

homes and countries families ripped

apart because of violence persecution

and human rights violations

this is what kohelet the author is

telling us it doesn't matter who we are

it doesn't matter if we're good or bad

terrible things happen to us constantly

unexpectedly randomly

the world is unpredictable it can happen

to anyone suddenly people enjoying a

vacation at the beach end up running to

high ground for their lives we can't

avoid it and we never know when it's

going to happen

it's the random unpredictableness

unfairness Injustice of life

see it says the race is not to the Swift

the battle is not to the strong we may

be fast and still lose we may be strong

and still get defeated

food is not to the wise wealth is not to

the brilliant you may be wise and

intelligent we may have a degree from

one of the best schools in the world but

that does not guarantee success

we may be brilliant but it doesn't

matter it doesn't guarantee that we'll

succeed

life does not work this way

oftentimes we may think we're in control

we may think if I go to this school and

take this course I'll be set up for

Success if I just make this deal I'll be

in a good place to succeed if I exercise

and take care of my body I won't get

injured if I do this and this my life

will go very well

but Ecclesiastes in this chapter showing

us that that is not the case we are not

in control what does it say time and

chance happen to them all

conventional wisdom says work hard and

you'll succeed but Ecclesiastes says

that's not guaranteed many many many

things could happen

it's an incredibly realistic way

of looking at the world

now the author goes even further in

verses two to four author says all share

a common Destiny the righteous and the

Wicked the good and the bad the clean

and the unclean those who offer

sacrifices and those who not the same

Destiny overtakes all and then in verse

5 for the living know that they will die

forgotten their love their hate their

jealousy have long since vanished never

again will they have a part in anything

that happens under the sun

what's he saying over here he's saying

no matter what we do in life whether we

are good or bad

whether we live a life of goodness and

morality or a life of wickedness whether

we are the murderer or whether we're the

child everything we do will vanish

not only that even the memory of what we

do will disappear forever it will be

at the end of it there is nothing

see whatever we do in this life does not

change the fact that we will die one day

and when we do it there will be nothing

after

that's why he says in verse 10 whatever

your hand finds to do do it with all

your might for in the realm of the Dead

where you are going there is neither

working nor planning nor knowledge nor

wisdom

we're all going to die all of us

and if this life is all there is nothing

comes after

and The Logical conclusion means that if

one day everything we do will be

forgotten then everything we do is

ultimately meaningless it has no lasting

impact

it's easy to understand why this is

called the most depressing book chapter

in the book

there have been a couple of Articles

outlining what would happen if Humanity

disappeared or went extinct

here's what one of them says

in just a few hours

lights across the world will shut down

within 10 days billions of pets and farm

animals would die due to starvation and

dehydration

a month later cooling water at nuclear

plants will evaporate turning large

areas of the world into nuclear

wastelands

after a year satellites and other

various objects we've put in the Earth's

orbit will come Crashing Down

25 years later 75 of the earth city

streets and sidewalks will be covered in

vegetation and plants cities like Las

Vegas and Dubai will be smothered in

sand

after 300 years metal constructions like

the Eiffel Tower and steel Bridges

without maintenance will end up

crumbling to the ground swamps will

reappear

the air becomes cleaner no more PM 2.5

visibility increases

a few million years later

even the pyramids and the Great Wall of

China will erode

and after around 50 million years there

will be no more evidence that humans

ever existed

and eventually in a few billion years

the sun will die the Earth will be

burned up

and that will be that

see if you build the pyramids you'll be

remembered for a while longer than most

people

but in the end if this life is all there

is everything will be forgotten it

doesn't matter who you are it doesn't

matter what you've done the same Destiny

overtakes all

if this life is all there is death is

the end of it and this means everything

is pointless

and now someone may say okay stop being

so gloomy

if life is pointless we might as well

enjoy it now there is luxury there's

clothing there's wonderful restaurants

and food and cafes there is amazing

homes there's sex there's pleasure

there's family let's enjoy all these

things now

but because everything is ultimately

ultimately pointless

go eat your food with gladness enjoy

life with your wife all the days of this

meaningless life all your meaningless

days see the author he's heard this

before he's heard people be like yeah

just enjoy it now so you're saying go

ahead and do that but your days are

meaningless

now

if we tune this out if we ignore the

fact that if this life is all there is

death is the end if we tune it out all

we're doing is we're just deceiving

ourselves

it's like being on a sinking ship and

throwing a large extravagant party

ignoring the fact that the water is

rising and the ship is going down

if we tune it out we'll only tune it out

for some time but one day we'll have to

confront it and this is what the author

wants us to see he wants us to confront

it he wants us to see that we can't

ignore it it's a real problem if this

life is all there is everything we do is

ultimately meaningless because we all

will die and we all will be forgotten

one day so it doesn't matter what we do

now or how we live under the sun

the question then still is how do we

live in the world of Injustice and

suffering and death

because the Injustice and suffering that

he's showing us is ultimately that we're

going to die and that everything is

now the author gives us an answer here

he doesn't tell us directly what it is

but he gives us Clues he gives us

questions he wants us to arrive at the

answer

so one of the things that we're told is

in verse 4.

he says it's good to be alive even a

life dog is better than the deadline

so dogs back then even now

reviewed as the lowest of the low you

see a stray dog on the street in

they have a pretty low place

the author he's saying that it's better

to be alive as a dog than to be dead as

a lion

it's better to be the lowest of the low

and alive

it's better to be a murderer a scavenger

living in terrible conditions than it is

to be a good and righteous person who's

dead it's better to be a live dog than a

deadline

he's saying it doesn't matter our

morality doesn't matter it's better to

be a liar a traitor as long as we're

alive than it is to be a good person and

dead

and I see in a life where there is no

God morals don't matter morality doesn't

matter how do we know that in verse 5 he

says For Love or hate or jealousy

has long vanished it's forgotten

because what we do will ultimately be

forgotten and is meaningless it does not

matter how we live

it's survival of the fittest it's better

to be the lowest of the low and be alive

than it is to be good and Noble and

right but to be dead

what does it mean to be good what does

it mean to be bad there's no such thing

if this life is all there is it's really

just survival of the fittest isn't it do

your best to stay alive look out for

yourself only there's no such thing as

good and bad

however in verse 3 this is a conundrum

it's confusing he says the hearts of

people are full of evil

this is interesting because if we

believe let's say we believe that this

life is all there is

logically there should be no such thing

as Injustice

but deep inside we know there is

we often feel it when we look at the

world when we look at ourselves and on

this point uh Tim Keller points out the

contradiction

he says oftentimes someone may say I

don't or I can't believe in God because

of all the Injustice in the world

but if there is no God there is no such

thing as Injustice there is no basis for

Injustice there's no basis for Morality

so the fact that we feel Injustice

means must mean that there is a God

put differently

if there is a God then evil and

Injustice is a big problem

and we may say and we oftentimes do

God has his reasons for allowing

Injustice and we just have to trust him

trust God he knows why He's letting you

go through all this evil he has his

reasons you'll never know so just trust

him

and this this argument makes sense but

it's not very comforting

especially if we're suffering right now

it's not comforting at all

so so far we've seen that one life is

unfair it's unjust it doesn't go

according to plan there is suffering

and two that there is a God because if

there wasn't there would be no such

thing as evil or Justice

but the fact that we feel that there are

things that are unjust must mean that

there is a God who has ordered the world

a certain way

and this is what plenty of religions

believe so far we haven't

we haven't done anything unique plenty

of religions believe that life is

suffering and that there is a God and

that we just have to trust this God

but we can't and we don't know this

God's reasons God is out there not

personal

so it's interesting but again if we're

suffering this isn't comforting at all

it's just cold

but Christianity tells us that we can

know who this God is we can know what

this God is like

because the text here gives us one more

it's here in verses 13 to 18. it's an

interesting story to be placed in this

chapter

it says I saw an example of wisdom that

greatly impressed me

so the Hebrew word here for impressed is

far stronger than how we've translated

it it

has similar meanings to great but it has

a lot more weight than that

but let's say it's a great example of

now why is it amazing why is it

confounding why is this example so great

well it says there was once a small City

but only a few people in it and a

powerful King came against it surrounded

it and built huge Siege works against it

now there lived in that city of Man Poor

but wise

and he saved the City by his wisdom

but nobody remembered that poor man

so I said wisdom is better than strength

and his words are no longer heated

now what what's going on here what's

made this so confounding so we have a

city

is completely overwhelmed there's a

powerful King a powerful King comes

against this small City with only a few

people in it the city stands no chance

whatsoever again it's just like we've

been saying one day the city is doing

fine it's prospering the next day evil

suddenly falls upon the city

unpredictable Injustice

just like we've been saying one day

Injustice strikes and how do we deal

with Injustice this man and his wisdom

saved the city

he saved the people from Death this man

in his wisdom were extremely powerful

so that the city was saved

but no one remembered that poor man

she was forgotten and it says Not only

was he forgotten

but his wisdom was despised

intentionally hated

this is what's confounding a small

helpless city this city couldn't do

anything against this powerful King but

a man poor but wise uses his wisdom to

save the city uses his wisdom to Serve

the People rescues the people delivers

the people and he's hated for it

he is forgotten and despised isn't this

confusing

why would anyone hate this man how could

anyone forget this man

Ecclesiastes then says the quiet words

of the wise are more to be heated than

the shouts of a ruler of fools

wisdom is better than weapons of war but

one sinner

destroys much good

one commentator says that the ruler of

fools would be the ruler of the city

where the people forgot this man's

Wisdom

and the Sinners are those people who

have forgotten the man who saved the

city forgotten the man who saved them

so in short

if this life is all there is there is

even wisdom is useless

if you save a city you may be remembered

for your Deeds a little longer than most

but even then the memory of what you do

will become hated and eventually it'll

disappear and vanish never to be

remembered

wisdom then

is useless

and if this is how things ended the

world would truly be a depressing place

we'd have no resources to cope with

suffering or Injustice

but one commentator points out that this

story

reads almost like a prophecy

it's a shadow of another

poor and wise man

here's a question whose name most

naturally comes to mind when we hear of

a poor man full of wisdom a savior whose

life and teachings were rejected and

despised

the man

and his wisdom that the author saw was

just a reflection of the greater wisdom

the true poor wise man

Paul says in First Corinthians we preach

Christ crucified a stumbling block to

Jews and foolishness to Gentiles but to

Those whom God is called both Jews and

Greeks Christ the power of God and the

wisdom of God

and then he says it is because of him

that you are in Christ Jesus who has

become for us wisdom from God that is

our righteousness Holiness and

Redemption

the wisdom of the poor wise man is only

a shadow of what we see in Jesus Christ

the true poor wise man and this is the

key right here to be being able to live

in a world that is unjust and full of

suffering

because we don't just have a God who is

content to sit up there and say I have

reasons for why you're suffering just

trust me you'll never know those reasons

but just believe me no we don't have a

god like that we're able to know God how

through Jesus Christ This Is The Gospel

we are the ones who have forgotten God

we are the ones who have forgotten the

true poor wise men how do we forget God

we forget God when we go our own way

when we follow the desires of our own

heart

when we don't give importance to what

God has said and how God wants us to

live

we've forgotten God

we forget God when we act as if we are

our own Gods

and when we do that when we forget God

we're actually turning away from the

only thing the only person that will

last forever

and that means that when we turn away

from the only thing that's permanent we

turn towards meaninglessness we are

meaningless that's what we deserve

because we've turned away from God not

only that we've despised God

and so we're headed what we deserve is

nothing and meaninglessness

just what the author is saying this life

is all there is there's his death

that's what we deserve but God has done

something about it God came down in

Jesus Christ the true poor wise man who

saved us how on the cross

when Jesus Christ was on the cross

do you know what happened

in Matthew 27 verse 46 he cries out my

God my God why have you forsaken me

in other words my God my God why have

you forgotten me why have you turned

your back on me

on the cross God turned his back on

Jesus Christ Jesus was experienced

experiencing what we all deserve because

we've turned away from God Jesus was

experiencing the ultimate nothing the

ultimate meaninglessness

he got what was coming to everybody the

nothingness that makes our lives

meaningless it went into Jesus Christ

and here's the question why

so that we will not be so that we will

be remembered so that God won't turn us

back on us so that will be eternally

that our lives have true and Lasting and

eternal significance and meaning see if

this life is all there is our lives are

but because Jesus Christ the true poor

wise man was forgotten

God can be with us and we can be with

God forever

the only true meaning that lasts and

this is how we're able to live in a

world that is full of suffering and is

unjust

this is how we're able to walk out into

the world with the full Assurance

knowing that we're loved by God

and that we will never be forgotten by

God that will never be abandoned by God

this allows us knowing this remembering

this letting this sink into our hearts

allows us to walk into the world full of

confidence able to truly enjoy life

if there have any any of us here that

don't know Jesus but would like to know

that he invites us all to know him

talk to him he's alive he's here get to

know Jesus The God Who came into

suffering took on the Injustice and

suffering of this world in a deeper way

than anyone has ever experienced it

most of us our main problem as

Christians most most of us

who are Christians we are guilty of

forgetting God

we've forgotten God that's our biggest

problem

our biggest problem is that we've

forgotten God

in the way that we deal with conflict

in the ways that we live privately

in how we use our money

in how we use our words

in how we view ourselves and how we view

other people we've forgotten God

we've forgotten what God has done for us

we've forgotten the new life that we

have in Jesus Christ for example if

we're here today and someone has

criticized us this week and we've spent

all of today and this whole week angry

and ruminating on it and thinking about

it playing it over and over we've

we've forgotten about the one person

whose opinion truly matters

the one who truly loves us who will

never forget us

if someone has hurt us and we refuse to

forgive them

we've forgotten God as well

because we've forgotten our need for

forgiveness and how because of Jesus

Christ God has forgiven us

don't forget God remember God remember

the poor wise men

let's remember Jesus Christ let's fill

our hearts with the knowledge of what

Jesus Christ has done for us

now let us live knowing that we have

been made alive in Christ

let's pray

father we come before you right now and

we thank you

Lord that you are here with us Lord we

thank you that

you have never forgotten us and that you

never will we pray that

Lord that's through your Holy Spirit you

would help these truths to sink deeper

and deeper into our hearts that we may

as our true identity Lord as as your

children

now Lord we we need you Lord

pray that you would meet us in how we

need to be met by you today in Jesus

name
