great

so as as others

who've preached in this series as

they've said in this book we have the

teacher who is like the main person

talking

and what's the teacher doing the teacher

is observing things that happen in the

world around him and the world around us

and he's trying to make sense of them

right and through this the the teacher

shows us what it's like to try and

figure out how and why things work in

life

okay

sometimes life works out well doesn't it

and then other times it does not work

out well sometimes sometimes things seem

very fair to us

and then sometimes the next state can

seem not fair at all the teacher in

Ecclesiastes like all of us has a

limited perspective

so two words or phrases that the teacher

uses in this book frequently the first

one is life Under the Sun we've been

talking about this a lot in this series

it's used 29 times in the book

and uh what that refers to is our

perspective as limited uh dependent

human beings so it's life Under the Sun

the second word is a Hebrew word okay

it's translated as like meaningless or

vapor so it's meant to convey like

temporary or like you know what I'm

gonna do I'm actually gonna show us what

what heavil is like that's the Hebrew

word heavily

don't be alarmed it'll be okay

it's not fire just wait wait for it

so this this is heavil all right so

hevel it's like temporary meaning like

you see it and then it's gone sorry it's

heading else Direction excuse that and

also hevel is also meant to show us that

like we can kind of make out what form

it's in

but then you try and grab it and and

it's not the same form right so it's

temporary it's like

always changing and so when we put these

two phrases together life Under the Sun

and heavil we can see that the teachers

saying that like life Under the Sun Life

from our limited perspective is

temporary and when you try and grab it

or make sense of it you can't this is

kind of how it goes it's kind of

mysterious Okay so

yeah we believe

yeah we're talking about live from our

limited human perspective and it doesn't

make sense sometimes much of this is

what sin has done to our world okay as

you as our Christians we believe that

God created the world perfect

and then um When sin entered into the

world

it twists and it lies and it makes

things unjust and sin does this to both

our own hearts and it does this to the

world around us as well and the teacher

is observing all this he's seeing that

life Under the Sun is confusing

uh here we go okay uh so we see these

themes of Life Under the Sun and hevel

in our chapter today in Ecclesiastes 11

uh in verses one through six it'll be on

the screen in a second the teacher is

going to tell us that there are a lot of

things that we do not know our

perspective is limited and then in

verses 7 through 10 the teacher is going

to tell us to rejoice in life but there

will be dark days in our lives life

can't always be figured out so again

that's how we're going to look at

Ecclesiastes 11 today the first section

of entitled it you don't know that's in

verses 6 through 10 in the second

section

is verses 7 through 10 Rejoice but so

here's the first section verse verses

one through six

there we go okay it's up on the screen

I'm gonna read Ecclesiastes 11 1-6

cast your bread upon the waters for you

will find it after many days give a

portion to seven or even to eight for

you know not what disaster may happen on

Earth

if the clouds are full of rain they

empty themselves on the Earth

and if a tree falls to the South or to

the north in the place where the tree

falls there it will lie he who observes

the wind will not sow and he who regards

the clouds will not reap

as you do not know the way the spirit

comes to the bones in the womb of a

woman with child so you do not know the

work of God who makes everything

in the morning sow your seed and at

evening withhold not your hand for you

do not know which will prosper this or

that

or whether both alike will be good this

is the word of the Lord

so I did this last time I preached I

like to summarize what sections mean so

if we were to summarize this section in

one sentence okay you ready we could say

you don't know what's going to happen in

your life but that shouldn't stop you

from pursuing things in life okay I'll

say it again a little bit differently

you don't know what's going to happen

tomorrow or next month or next year but

you should still keep living and working

and pursuing things

okay I'm going to start by looking at

this statement you don't know

look at verse two it says for you know

not

in verse 5 he says it twice as you do

not know as you do not know verse 6 he

says it again

and I am not in control and I know it

may seem crazy but we don't know what's

going to happen tomorrow okay

we don't understand as much as we think

that we do

this this book Ecclesiastes it was

written about 3 000 years ago

and there are a lot of things in our

world that have changed in the past

three thousand years right

the world has developed in many ways

some of you may have one of these now

okay and in many ways we can we can try

and control our lives with this

we can monitor our sleep we can be up to

date on what our friends are doing every

minute of the day and what the whole

world is doing at the at every minute of

the day and we can find almost any piece

of information we want to

but in some ways our world has not

changed at all in 3000 years in verse

two if you want to look at the screen it

talks about not knowing when disaster

will hit on Earth

where were you in January of 2020 when

covet hit

do you remember

how has it affected your life over the

past three years

and what kind of control have you had

over that

much

today it's uh it's election day in

Thailand and we need to pray for for the

nation for the lord to bless us with a

good government

I was listening to an interview of one

of the candidates in he was asked why

should the government help people

and the first reason this person gave

was this he said I'll quote he said the

situation of our world right now is

increasingly unstable and predictable we

have people losing jobs every day for

reasons they cannot control and then add

on a situation like covid which is

something that no one could have ever

predicted

brothers and sisters our ability to

control our lives and know what's going

to happen today is no different than for

the people than for the people when

Ecclesiastes was written we are

dependent on so many things outside of

us the air that we breathe the water

that we drink the food we eat the people

that we rely on

and ultimately it's God our creator who

supplies all these things for us

so okay of course there are some things

that we can do and we can know again you

look up at the screen oh verse 3 it

talks about how the clouds tell us if

it's going to rain and if a tree falls

one way then it's going to lie that way

but we are limited and we don't know

what's going to happen do we

I'm getting at this point because this

is what the teacher's getting at by

saying you don't know so many times

when we don't know what's going to

happen What do we do how do we feel

please think about your own life and I

want to think about my own life our our

jobs

we pray and hope that they're stable but

and then we don't know what's going to

happen tomorrow our families

your husband your wife your kids your

parents we pray that we're on good terms

with them tomorrow and we pray that

they're healthy but but ultimately we

don't know that do we

this is uncomfortable to think about

okay if you feel uncomfortable right now

I think I think that's what scripture is

getting at here we don't want to imagine

if something bad were to happen to

someone we love

but this is what the teacher is pointing

out to okay another lesson here your

foundation for living my foundation for

living our reason for existence our

purpose on this Earth cannot come from

what we do for work who you're married

to healthy you are mentally or

physically again these are some of the

most important things about you

what you do every day who you love your

health but they are not guaranteed again

to in this example we could bring up

millions of people where they they lost

everything and KOA they lost their

finances they lost their health they

lost loved ones

against it's difficult to think about

this but this is where the teacher is

pointing pointing us to and we need to

consider this

so what is his advice

he tells us to not let the uncertainty

of life keep us from living

he guides us to to not don't let the

instability or your lack of control

cause you not to pursue things and

before before we look at more at what

exactly the teacher says here I want to

remind us that the metaphors and the

language she uses these were written for

people in the Middle East 3000 years ago

so they may need a little bit of

explanation but but I think some of

it'll be it'll be fun so so in verse one

again at some point here on the screen

if you want to look at it it says cast

your bread upon the waters for you will

find it after many days

for this metaphor you need to realize

that the bread he's talking about is not

from the kanumbang section at 7-Eleven

that would break apart as soon as you

threw it in the water okay we're talking

about like Middle Eastern dense heavy

bread that would actually float he's

saying to there are other Middle Eastern

like ancient Middle Eastern phrases like

this that all refer to giving or

generosity so the teacher is talking

about if you give you will receive maybe

not in this life but in the next life we

should give even though we don't know

what's going to happen

in verse 2 he tells us to give a portion

to seven or eight which just means that

we should spread out our resources

because we don't know when disaster will

happen

we can say that the teacher here in

verses one and two he's encouraging us

that even though you and I we can't

control the future we should still give

and invest with what we have and and I

think it's neat here he uses examples

both from generosity and also from

business so it's like a a broad call to

use whatever opportunity or resources

you may have

in verse 3 he says again look at here

look at it up here on the screen he says

there's some things that we can know

like if the clouds are full of rain it's

probably going to rain

a very helpful metaphor for May and

Bangkok right we're about to enter rainy

season so if you see clouds towering

over terminal 21 you can see it out

there it's probably going to rain okay

we can know some things right and if a

tree falls this is not as helpful for

Bangkok if a tree falls it's going to

lie in the place it means like if it

falls this way it's going to lie that

way but for the people of Israel at that

time it would have been a helpful

metaphor farming agricultural Community

they would have had an instance where

they go out to get their crops that day

there's a tree falling right there okay

I'm gonna go into verse four look at

verse four he says he who observes the

wind will not sow and he who regards the

clouds will not reap

even though we can know some things

about the clouds and trees the teacher

he warns us with that we shouldn't try

and calculate or spend too much time

trying to figure out the best time to do

something

if someone just tried just sits out with

their seeds right a plant and figures

out when the wind or when the rains at

the perfect time to do so they're going

to end up not doing it at all there's no

Perfect Situation again here we see how

sin has affected our world and the

Israelites here they would have had

experience with this they probably would

have had days where like they're waiting

for that wind to stop or they're waiting

for the rain to come and like doesn't

come didn't work how they wanted to I

wanted how they wanted to

okay come back to Bangkok 2023 a modern

day example all right I'm sitting in a

cab with a taxi driver and he had lost

his job because of copen he'd start a

business but he lost it and he he wants

to get back into business and so he's

he's saving up and he's waiting for that

time to start the business right so he's

looking at numbers looking at other

other businesses in his industry

that he wants to start it in but

ultimately what he doesn't know what's

going to happen tomorrow right well none

of us know

verse 6 moving on continues the theme of

working hard even though we don't know

the teacher says it's better to sow your

seeds twice per day because you don't

know which one of those will go well I

want to close us with this section by

looking at verse 5.

it says as you do not know the way the

spirit comes to the bones in the womb of

a woman with child so you do not know

the work of God who makes everything

this is a very powerful picture

here the teacher points to one of the

biggest mysteries and miracles of all

the origin of life itself

all right it's one thing for you and I

to to not know all about the weather and

clouds and rain

but it's something entirely deeper for

us to not fully understand how and why

our life happens okay it's amazing and

great that science can show us pictures

of the development of of a child in the

womb but overall the way a child is

formed the way the way life happens in

the womb is a mysterious Miracle to us

as we've said that the teacher has the

perspective of being under the sun of

having a limited perspective but here

it's very important he points to the one

who is above the Sun the one who knows

all who has the full perspective who is

the creator of Life who has made

everything

it's God it's God who makes and works in

so while it is good to invest and give

in many different ways it's good to

listen to the advice of the teacher here

and it's good to to work hard knowing

not knowing which one of our efforts

will succeed but we must do this out of

a deeper perspective than just working

hard or spreading out our resources

ultimately we trust and and know that

God is involved in our work and God is

the one who cares about our lives

again the teacher here these are good

and practical reasons for your

generosity and your business of why we

shouldn't withdraw from life but

trusting in God the one who made us and

the one who made us to work this should

be like our anchor and the thing that

holds us as we pursue things

okay so I'm guessing at this point you

may be asking okay Ty how do I know that

God cares and is involved you're right I

can see that I'm not in control that

that points clear and life doesn't make

sense a lot of time but how do we no

if you don't think that God is involved

with or cares about your life because I

I feel the same life sometimes consider

this

The God Who makes the Spirit come to the

bones of a baby inside of a woman The

God Who makes everything Our God became

flesh and dwelt Among Us

Jesus was born of a woman just like you

and just like I was Jesus entered into

life Under the Sun that is like a vapor

just like you and just like me

Jesus he would have experienced both the

ups and the Downs of life and his work

as a carpenter and his work here on

Earth living in a world where sometimes

he was treated right and oftentimes as

we know he was not treated right

in order to heal what is wrong with this

world this is more than just the

Forgiveness of sins and forgiveness of

your sins and my sins that Jesus Paid

for on the cross of course it includes

that and that's amazing

but Jesus did much more than that okay

on the cross Jesus began what we call

the Redemption or like the fixing the

making of everything right in the world

Jesus came into life Under the Sun to

fix it for all who trust in him Jesus is

working in all things

I'm gonna guess again what you're

thinking at this point okay Ty I get

that makes sense I know the Bible

teaches that Jesus's death fixes

everything but my life is still very

difficult and to that I would respond

mine is too

and it's here that we have to hold on to

the promises that Jesus that Jesus gives

and these promises are greater than the

advice of the teacher here in

Ecclesiastes whereas the teacher tells

you to spread out your resources in case

disaster happens because of Jesus we can

know that in Colossians it says whatever

you do in word or deed do everything in

the name of the Lord Jesus giving thanks

to God the Father through him

brothers and sisters God promises Jesus

promises that our work whether it be

teaching students whether it be

designing things on a computer

our work done for the glory of God is

not in vain and whatever we do for

others whether whether it's noticed or

Not Jesus says it's as if we do it for

him Matthew 25 says I was hungry and you

gave me food I was thirsty and you gave

me a drink I was a stranger and you

welcomed me truly I say to you as you

did to one of the least of these

brothers you did it to me

Jesus sees our work here and our work

here is redeemed because of what he's

done we must see that our work here is

done for the lord it's not random and

it's not wasted

okay let's let's move on to the next

section verse 7.

so

after verses one through six

talking about how we should live and

work in a world that we don't understand

fully the teacher he now moves into like

what's the final section of the entire

Book of Ecclesiastes

and in this section he brings together a

lot of what what he's been talking about

this whole time and here we see the

process of like

being born being young growing old and

then dying okay for for today though

we're just going to look at these four

verses about being young I get to talk

about being young but if you want to

talk about growing old and dying needed

on we'll talk about that next week so

you should come back and hear about

death next week sorry that was a bad

pitch okay

I'm going to read Ecclesiastes 11 verses

7 through 10.

it's up here on the screen as well

light is sweet and it's Pleasant for the

eyes to see the sun

so if a person lives many years let him

rejoice in them all but let him remember

that the days of darkness will be many

all that comes is Vanity

Rejoice O young man and your Youth and

let your heart cheer you in the days of

your youth walk in the ways of your

heart and the side of your eyes but know

that for all these things God will bring

you into judgment

remove vexation from your hearts and put

away pain from your body for Youth and

Dawn and the dawn of life or vanity

so again I'm going to summarize this

section to help us understand it we

could say in one sentence

enjoy life

but there will be Darkness

or be happy but know that life is over

like that

it's a mist and you're gonna die

speaking from this under the sun limited

perspective so while many of his

thoughts and advices are right in their

amazing observations it's not the full

picture

look at uh verse 7 he says that light is

sweet and it's Pleasant people don't

want to see the sun right now right most

people are trying to hide away from the

Sun but if you can think about if you

can remember a morning in January or

December when it was cold season you go

out first thing in the morning and

before the traffic started that's the

kind of light we're talking about here

in verse 7.

light and Sun are a gift from God

life is a gift from God we see this all

over scripture Psalm 128 says happy is

everyone who fears the Lord who walks in

his ways you shall eat the fruit of your

of the labor of your hands you shall be

happy and it shall go well with you

life it's a gift and it should be

enjoyed by us verse 8 it says that if

you live for many years then rejoice in

them

but

there's always a butt isn't there okay

one commentator about this section he

says that the teacher will like give

with one hand and say rejoice and then

he takes with the other other hand it

says but

he said uh he says but

here he tells us to Rejoice but remember

all is a vapor and death is coming

but then look at verse 9 he goes back

and he tells us rejoice o young man in

your Youth and let your heart cheer you

in the days of your youth walk in the

ways of your heart and the side of your

eyes

but again we see it again there's the

butt we will all be judged by God

the call to rejoice in life it's not

permission to do anything that you want

God is the one who has created you and

designed you and his law his way is best

and he will judge all of us according to

his law so follow your heart and enjoy

life enjoy what God has given you but do

this within the bounds of God's law with

him as your creator

verse 10 says remove vexation from your

heart and put away pain from your body

for youth in the dawn of Life are vanity

or a vapor or messed okay I have another

example here I think a helpful way for

us to think about this section of the

teacher's sayings is to compare it with

a dessert or sweets okay so I need

everyone to think about your favorite

dessert or sweet right maybe it's

chocolate cake or nam kingsai I love Nam

King sign or mango ice cream or some

sort of candy okay does everybody have

their dessert in their head we good

this is a gift from God

it's Pleasant to eat it

you should rejoice in it

enjoy enjoy it while you can

there's nothing wrong with eating

chocolate cake

but you're going to finish that piece of

cake

if you're like my son yesterday he

finished it in about eight seconds

the cake is like a vapor

enjoy the mango ice cream but do it in a

way that honors God knowing that you'll

be judged for the way that you hate that

ice cream

and stop worrying stop having vexation

about how to make that candy or about

how to make that cake worth more than it

actually is because you know what it's

going to be gone before you know it

candy

and cake or something under the sun I

suppose something to be enjoyed and

something that disappears very quickly

it's a gift life Under the Sun is a gift

from God but it's a vapor and it's not

ultimate

true lasting joy in life is meant to be

found above the Sun

it's to be found above the sun it's in

God as our creator and that's where the

teacher that's where this whole book is

headed in the next and final chapter in

chapter 12. in chapter 12 it'll tell us

to remember our creator it will tell us

to fear God and to keep his Commandments

for this is the whole duty of man

so how do we close how do we how do we

summarize all this

as we've seen the teacher and

Ecclesiastes he's observing how life

Works under the sun right it can seem

confusing we don't know what's going to

happen sometimes things go exactly as we

plan and it feels amazing and then the

next day it feels terrible because

they've all gone astray

when we only view life from a human

perspective it can be very depressing we

work hard but sometimes we don't see the

fruit

we rejoice in our youth and enjoy life

but then we look up and we see that

death is coming

brothers and sisters life on this Earth

is a gift but our hearts cry out isn't

there something more than eating

We Praise Jesus our God the one who is

above the Sun the one who made all

things we remember and thank him for

coming down to life Under the Sun where

we are to save us and he did this so

that our work so that you're working my

work isn't in vain even when things seem

to go wrong from our perspective we work

to glorify him

because Jesus came to fix the world

Under the Sun you and I can enjoy life

for what it is we can enjoy that mango

ice cream because it's something created

that points to the one who will

ultimately satisfy us the Creator our

creator

remember your creator

fear God and keep his Commandments this

is why we were created let's pray

father we are grateful for for your word

Lord thank you for how your word comes

and

speaks to our hearts Lord it shows us

things about our hearts that we didn't

even know were there Lord and ultimately

shows us that that it's you that we

thirst for it's you that we long for

Lord thank you Jesus for for coming to

this earth to save us sinners Lord so we

can be reconciled to God bless bless

your work this time God in Jesus
