to Grace City

my name is Tim

uh

and if you are visiting with us tonight

we are really glad that you're here

tonight we are going to be starting a

new series

so if you're just visiting tonight you

get to be here for the start of it

[Music]

we want to share a little bit about our

community

foreign

and we want to live out that gospel of

grace with our friends our neighbors our

colleagues

as a community we want to love and care

for this city with the hope that comes

through Jesus Christ

we we live here we study here we work

here we play here and we desire to do

all of this out of a collective Heart of

Worship and of service

so the series we're beginning tonight

it's entitled fruit of the spirit

[Applause]

and when I say that you're probably

thinking already of a few of those

attributes a few of those fruits that

the spirit brings in our life

the Bible speaks fruit of the spirit it

uses this term in Galatians

in the fifth chapter we read this but

the fruit of the spirit is love it's joy

peace patience kindness goodness

faithfulness gentleness self-control

against such things there is no lawsuit

but we're also going to look at some

other characteristics that God builds

into the life of the Christians

we're going to talk about Holiness and

contentment and humility

and tonight we're going to look at focus

on gratitude or thankfulness

what does it mean

to be thankful

to have a thankful heart a heart of

gratitude

what does the Bible say what does it

teach about being thankful

today we'll be reading from the book of

Colossians it's a letter from the

Apostle Paul to the church in colossi

um

if you want to open to chapter 3 we'll

read that now hello

put on then

as God's chosen ones holy and beloved

compassionate hearts

kindness

humility

meekness

and patience

bearing with one another and if one has

a complaint against another

forgiving each other

as the Lord has forgiven you so you also

must forgive

and above all these put on love

which binds everything together in

Perfect Harmony

and Let the Peace of Christ rule in your

hearts

to which indeed you were called in one

body

and be thankful

let the word of Christ dwell in you

richly teaching and admonishing one

another in all wisdom

singing Psalms and hymns and spiritual

songs with thankfulness in your hearts

to God

and whatever you do

in word or In Deed

do everything

in the name of the Lord Jesus

giving thanks

to God the Father through him

let's pray together

God we thank you for the reading of your

word the Bible

we believe it to be true and we're

grateful that we can even read it aloud

today

we ask that you would Reveal Your Truth

in these passages to us

we pray that the words we've read they

would speak to our hearts at a deeper

level and lead us in our faith in you

know

we ask and pray this in your Holy Name

Lord Jesus amen

in 2005

17 year old Kanita

her nickname is mint Maybe

was she was the winner mint was the

winner of a pageant here in Thailand

and what got the attention of news

outlets around the world was not the

dress that she wore

La cow

and it wasn't her answers to the

questions during the pageant

instead what got the attention of the

world was a simple yet profound Act of

and a show of Honor that she

demonstrated to her mother

you see uh Kun mint and her mother who

raised her alone

they actually make a living uh

collecting and recycling trash

and after the pageant when she won she

went back to her home and she got down

on her knees for this photo shoot and

she showed great honor and respect and

thankfulness to her mother

and she was quoted as saying this

what I have today

is because of my mother

she and I make a living doing honest

work

s

so there's no reason why I should feel

inferior

and this picture resonates with our

yeah

what had stood out to so many was the

juxtaposition of a beauty queen

and her family's background in a humble

occupation

yeah and Kun Min had used this photo

shoot as an opportunity to express great

thankfulness to her mother and the

images they touched many around the

world

what about you today

you know I think if we took a moment and

we passed the microphone around

I think we would all have many things we

could be thankful for um

could be family or friends or education

opportunities abilities

maybe we would share about the things

that that make life special like

laughter or Smiles or nature or stories

or children

and maybe you're already doing this but

I want you to take a moment now

and think about something that you are

very thankful for eign

now while you have that thought in your

mind I want you to think about

what or who you attribute that feeling

of gratitude of thankfulness towards you

it was a gratefulness to her mother for

raising her despite difficulties

so maybe you're thinking of of someone

in your life that you're thankful

towards in this regard or maybe it's

towards God for giving you or allowing

you to have whatever it is you're

thinking of in your life Christian

let's look at Paul's at this portion of

Paul's letter tonight

put on he writes put on

it's like it's like clothing where we're

putting on clothing

you know the the Christian is one that

God adorns with new life

it's a person that has been renewed by

the truth and the saving power of Jesus

Christ

there's been what's what we call a

repentance a turning away from something

and towards God

turning away from trying to be our own

savior our own God and turning towards

the one true God

in second Corinthians chapter 5 we read

this

therefore if anyone

anyone

is in Christ

he or she this person is a new creation

the old has passed away behold

the new has come

from

in the Christian gospel

God Saves the repentance Center

and then clothes her

clothes him

with these attributes compassion

humility meekness patience

is

but a a watching world may honestly say

or perhaps you're someone who doesn't

profess to be a Christian but you know

Christians and you think and you say wow

the Christians I know aren't like that

Christian Community

and it's true you know

the the process of sanctification is a

journey for us

the good news is that when someone

believes in Jesus they believe him as

Lord they follow him in that we're

Justified before God but the process of

our hearts changing takes time

and when Paul addresses

at the beginning of this letter that

this portion of the letter

when he says

that they are holy and beloved

we need to know that this Holiness this

righteousness is from Jesus it does not

come from us on

what's

up and

we do desire to see growth in these

areas of our lives but we need God to do

the initial work in us and the continued

work in US

alone

above all put on love Paul writes

it binds everything together

where

me

do you see the plural s their hearts

this is for the church this is for the

people of God the body of Christ Jesus

you were called in one body Paul writes

and for all this Paul says

be thankful

Lord

but the word of Christ dwell

in you richly

teaching and admonishing one another in

all wisdom singing Psalms and hymns and

spiritual songs with thankfulness in

your hearts to God don't hey

when we think about Grace City when we

think about our family here

I like him

we are becoming

in deeper and deeper ways a community

that is led by the word of Christ

as we get to know one another and we

live life together

we want this let the word of Christ

dwell in US among us

we wanted to teach us to instruct us to

admonish us

you know that word admonish it means to

warn someone or to reprimand them

when we think of the word reprimand we

don't like that

you know to to warn someone of something

that you see in their life or for them

to tell you what's going on or ask you

questions what's going on in your heart

it's hard to do let me think yeah

but as Believers in community we have a

sacred responsibility to care for one

another in Christ

so yes to to warn one another if we see

some challenge in the life of a brother

or sister or to receive that from

someone and say thank you for caring

about me

and that's when you know someone really

cares about you is when they share

something that is difficult for them to

share because they love you

and so Paul writes again

do these things everything we've been

talking about do this with thankfulness

in your hearts yeah

and this is a thankfulness that is

directed toward God

and you see how it incorporates even all

of our worship of God Paul writes

singing Psalms hymns spiritual songs

that's what we were just doing together

as a church

so we want our hearts to be punctuated

with this praise towards God yeah

and whatever you do in verse 17 whatever

you do in word or D do everything in the

name of the Lord Jesus giving thanks to

God the Father through him let me

concept it let me what happened

so

whatever

you do there's a totality there all of

life whatever you do

it all do everything

what do you think it means to do

something in the name of Jesus what do

you think that means so

I think it means that we desire and we

do we try to discern

what Jesus would do and we live in that

way

and so we understand by reading the

gospels and reading the scriptures and

understanding life in community we begin

to understand more and more

the character of Jesus

and we understand what he would do and

we follow him

and

Paul finishes that verse with again

giving thanks to God the Father through

Jesus

so the theme of gratitude of

thankfulness it actually is woven

through just this very short Passage

three different times Paul writes about

being grateful being thankful

gratitude is an integral part of the

Christian faith Christian

now thinking back to earlier when you

were thinking of something you were

thankful for if you were thinking of one

thing perhaps many things but think of

of one thing right now foreign

now I'm almost positive that you were

thinking of something good in your life

right

that's naturally what we think of I'm

thankful for this and it's something

good

in another uh one of Paul's letters this

one actually to the church in

thessalonica first Thessalonians

we read this Rejoice always

pray without ceasing

give thanks in all circumstances

for this is the will of God in Jesus

for you

possible

what does it mean to be able to give

thanks to God even in the midst of of

hard things foreign

you know some of you maybe be really

going through difficult time in your

life right now

and maybe it's really difficult for you

to find something to be thankful for

like yeah

and that would be a really honest reply

from you God

and you might hear this from the Bible

and think am I to give thanks in the

midst of that difficulty that hardship

I think that this next Passage

May reveal some truth in the light of of

those questions those are really good

questions and those are honest questions

what

Psalm 69 verses 29 and 30. let me read

these to us

but I am afflicted

and in pain

let your salvation o god Set me on high

I will praise the name of God with a

song I will

Magnify Him with Thanksgiving

to

this Psalm is actually one of King

David's Psalms

and we know that King David suffered in

his life and he also caused Great

suffering

if you know the story of King David he

committed adultery with a woman who was

was not his wife Bathsheba

okay

and to cover up his sin he actually had

her husband who was a a soldier moved to

the front line of battle where it was

dangerous and he was killed

because I

you know he essentially

murdered he was complicit in uriah's

Murder gob

Lin

and we know that David suffered greatly

too uh

because of this and other sins

and in the Psalms in the Bible we see

great honesty

and David is writing this Psalm from a

broken heart from a suffering heart

and he says in the midst of that he says

God let your salvation set me on high

so David he understands

the suffering of this life

he would acknowledge the suffering that

he caused and he would acknowledge the

suffering that he's experiencing when he

writes this

but in this place of Brokenness he looks

to God and he looks at the Salvation

that God brings

and that

is what saves him

that is what truly saves him and that he

says it sets me on high

there is another

who understands

the suffering

of this world

and he understands it to its fullness to

its depth

because at the core at the middle of the

Christian faith is the belief that God

came

down as Christ and lived Among Us

he came and he suffered in fact the

Bible says that he bore he carried he

took on our sin

he was crucified he was broken for us

relax

and he rose from the dead actually we

believe conquering death itself

so the Christian the follower of Jesus

is one that can say whatever happens in

this life

you are God

and it is my salvation in you that is

the ultimate issue the Pinnacle the top

of whatever may happen to me

when one comes to believe in the truth

of Jesus Christ

and understands and really believes the

great love of God

that God gave himself for them

then they can say along with David I

will praise the name of God

again

you know the Psalms are songs

so think about King David in his broken

State singing this to God hello

and when we understand what Jesus has

done for us we can sing along with David

the name of God with a song I will

and that friends is a thankfulness that

is rooted in all that God has done for

us through Jesus Christ

so yes thankfulness gratitude is a is a

wonderful part our lives in Christ

we can praise and thank God for the good

things and even in the midst of

suffering Laos

even in the midst of suffering we can

thank him

for the ultimate show of love and

sending

his son to rescue us

yes thanks be to God for all that he has

done

thanks be to God for his good plan to

redeem and to save this world

let's pray together as we close

God we do indeed thank you

we thank you

for your plan to rescue this world that

you created

this world

this world that rebelled and spiraled

out of control

we don't have to look far to know that

this world still struggles under the

weight of its Brokenness

we see it around us and we see it in US

and yet

we have hope

we thank you that you did not leave us

to ourselves but you came to save us

you came to bring healing and

restoration and renewal

God help us to live with thankful hearts

and to love and care for those around us

in the truth of your gospel song

foreign we pray this in your holy name

amen
