today we're continuing to to look at

the church and ajana tea started us off

last week and this week we'll look at

the purpose of the church but before we

do that let me pray for our time in

God's word

uh dear heavenly father we thank you so

much for this opportunity to come and to

gather to worship you to sing praises to

your holy name

we thank you for your word we thank you

for your Holy Spirit and we pray that

you will help us to understand your word

rightly help us to understand the

purpose for your church and I ask all

this in Jesus name amen

now the church like any good institution

or organization has been created in an

orderly and logical Way by an orderly

and logical God

God doesn't design things and hope that

they will work out

God designed and created the church to

have a specific purpose

a mission vision and values and he

hasn't left us to figure these things

out on her own

he has given us his word that contains

these and so as we look through his word

we find all of them

so if we as Grace City Bangkok want to

honor the Lord as his church then we

must understand why he created us

what we are to do and be and how we

should go about it

if you go online and look at most larger

companies on their website you will find

a place that says about us and if you

click on this you'll probably see a

section that has the company's Mission

their purpose statement their vision and

values

and the purpose statement it answers the

question why

why do we exist why do we do what we do

the mission statement answers the

question what do we do

the company's purpose is the driving

force behind their mission so you can

think of a train with an engine car in

the back the engine car is what's

pushing along the rest of the train

Legos a children's toy company makes

toys that are made out of small blocks

that fit together

and these blocks must be put together to

form the toy it's kind of like Ikea for

kids

everything comes in a box and you have

to do all the work to put it together

and so this is a great business strategy

if anybody's looking to go into business

this is a great idea because you cut out

the need for assembly workers

because the kids assemble everything for

themselves

Lego's purpose statement at one time was

to inspire and develop the Builders of

tomorrow

and so the purpose statement of a

company says something about that

company's passion and what is motivating

them to do what they do

for Lego's company according to the

purpose statement their passion is to

encourage children to build and to

become builders

and so unlike Ikea the reason Legos

doesn't put the toys together for the

children is because they want the kids

to think for themselves how do I need to

put these blocks together so that I can

create what is on the cover of this box

they were training the kids to think

creatively which is a trait that

Builders must have

and so today we'll look at God's purpose

statement for the church

and we will answer the question why do

we do what we do

why do we exist what is the driving

force or should be the driving force of

all that we are and do as the church

and a good place to begin our search for

the purpose of the church is found in

Matthew 28 16-20 and here we find the

Great Commission

now the 11 disciples went to Galilee to

the mountain to which Jesus had directed

them and when they saw him they

worshiped him but some doubt it and

Jesus came and said to them all

authority in heaven and on Earth has

been given to me go therefore and Make

Disciples of all Nations baptizing them

in the name of the father and of the son

and of the Holy Spirit

teaching them to observe all that I have

commanded you and behold I Am With You

Always to the end of the age

and so here we see that the purpose of

the church is to make disciples and we

can break that purpose down further and

say that the church exists to gather and

mature God's people in the faith and

this person it then drives the mission

of the church

and you will have to come back next week

to hear about this Mission and what it

looks like and how we are to carry it

out

a good start to coming up with a purpose

statement for the church would be the

church's purpose is to make disciples of

Jesus

I'm sure many of you have heard or maybe

been to watch the kit the Temple of the

golden mount

I read that at one time maybe before all

the the huge skyscrapers were built in

Bangkok it was the highest point in

Bangkok

and it's a large Hill that has a

spiraling staircase that goes to the top

and on the top of the mount is a flat

area with a dome and I read that some of

the relics of Buddha are supposedly kept

here

and when you're on the top you can look

out and you can see this beautiful view

of Bangkok it's very beautiful

it is around 320 stairs to the Top If

you've ever climbed it you know it's not

an easy hike up

there's a section about halfway up

that has a lot of bells that people ring

as they are walking up

and I went with my a group of my friends

in 2010 we we climbed to the top

and there was a cafe there about in the

midsection and you can stop and get a

cool drink one of my friends who was

with us he wasn't in the best shape and

he also had a heart condition

and so he said I'm just gonna wait right

here at this Cafe I'm going to listen to

these people ringing the bells as they

come up and I'm going to drink my iced

coffee lotsie you guys just go on ahead

I'll be fine where I am I have a nice

view here that I can see

and my other friends who were with me

had been who had been to the top they

knew the beautiful view at the top and

they tried to convince this other friend

to keep going they said you have to keep

going you have to make it to the top or

you're going to miss the purpose that we

came which is to see the beautiful view

at the top of the mountain

the view is good here but it is even

better whenever you get to the top

so scripture prods us along like my

other friends prodded this one friend

along to go to the top to reach the top

of the purpose of the church we can't

just leave our purpose statement here

because there is a greater and there is

a grander aim that we must get to

so it wouldn't be wrong to say that the

Jesus but it wouldn't be complete

the ultimate aim of the purpose of the

church is to glorify God in and through

the church

so let's look first at how the ultimate

aim of the purpose of the church is to

glorify God in the church and then we'll

look at the same aim through the church

one place where scripture shows us the

ultimate aim in the church is in the

book of Ephesians

Paul speaks of it throughout Ephesians 1

through 3 and then he sums it up at the

end of chapter three

in Ephesians 1 3-14 Paul gives us a

picture of God forming and blessing the

church in and through Christ

and it says blessed be the God and

father of our Lord Jesus Christ who has

blessed us in Christ with every

spiritual blessing in the Heavenly

places even as he's chose us in him

before the foundation of the world that

we should be holy and blameless before

him

in love he predestined us for adoption

as Sons through Jesus Christ according

to the purpose of his will to the praise

of his glorious Grace with which he has

blessed us in the Beloved

in him we have Redemption through his

blood the Forgiveness of our trespasses

according to the riches of his grace

which he lavished upon us

in all wisdom and insight making known

to us the mystery of his will according

to his purpose which he set forth in

Christ is a plan for the fullness of

time to unite all things in him things

in heaven and things on earth in him we

have obtained an inheritance having been

predestined according to the purpose of

him who works all things according to

the counsel of his will so that we who

were the first to Hope in Christ might

be to the praise of his glory

in him you also when you heard the word

of Truth The Gospel of your salvation

and believed in him were sealed with the

promised Holy Spirit who is the

guarantee of our inheritance until we

require possession of it to the praise

of his glory

one of the themes that runs throughout

this passage and throughout the rest of

Ephesians 1 through 3 is that God pours

out his blessings upon his people

um in Ephesians 1 3

it says blessed be the God and father of

our Lord Jesus Christ who has blessed us

in Christ with every spiritual blessing

in the Heavenly places

in what way does God bless the church

and Verses 4

through 7 we see this

verse 4A we see

that God elects us

and verse 4A it says even as he chose us

in him before the foundation of the

world and so before the foundation of

the world meaning before God created

anything before he created us he knew

and he chose who he will love and so

this indicates that from all of eternity

God has loved us

the act of God choosing us as an act of

eternal love

Paul goes on to say

in verse 4B that we should be holy and

blameless before him and so God planned

for us to be holy and blameless before

him in this phrase it paints a picture

of someone standing before a judge

the Lord has done everything needed

through the life and the work of Christ

to make us appear spotless before him

in verse 5 in love he predestined us for

adoption as Sons

many of you may not have the greatest

families Earthly families our family but

because you were part of the church you

are now part of God's family you have a

new family a heavenly father who is so

much better than what you have now on

Earth

in verse 7 he says in him we have

Redemption through his blood the

Forgiveness of our trespasses

and so God like any righteous and good

judge requires that we are held

accountable for our sin

Jesus through his death has taken care

of the punishment for our sins so that

we are now forgiven

he has redeemed us from our sinful

condition before the Lord and the price

he paid for our Ransom was his own blood

and these are a few of the many

blessings that we receive as being part

so what do these verses tell us about

the church's relationship to God

is the one who blesses and the church is

the one who receives these blessings

and so the church exists because God

wants to have a people to pour out his

blessings upon

and verse 5 it says that

to the purpose of his will

and so how does God bless us

it is in love that God blesses us God

the Father didn't act in a cold or

mechanical way when he predestined us

for adoption as sons and daughters

God is Not passionless

he determined our destiny to be his

children because he is a loving God and

he was compelled by love to do so

and to love someone always involves an

action but is never just an action alone

to love someone involves the emotions

when you love someone it means that you

act in a way that is best for that

person that comes from a heart that

wants the best for that person

there's a good motive that is behind

that action and so love involves both

action and emotion

so when Paul tells us that God In Love

predestined us for adoption it means

that God planned for us to be his

children in order to bring about

something good for us and it also means

that it was done out of his desire for

our good

does God love us because of anything

that we have done

no we can't earn God's love God loves us

because he loves us

we can't earn that love and we don't

deserve that love and so how does God

Express his love towards us

we've talked about it we've sang about

it this morning

in verses 7 through 8

we see that in him we have Redemption

through his blood the Forgiveness of our

trespasses according to the riches of

his grace which he has lavished Upon Us

in all wisdom and insight

and so one of the ways that God

expresses his love to us is through his

grace

we hear the term Grace a lot our

Church's name is Grace City uh has Grace

in it

what is Grace

in the New Testament one of the basic

meanings of the word is gift

when we look at the the way Paul uses it

here to describe the way that God has

blessed the church we can say that Grace

means a gift given by God

all of the blessings that we receive

from God are by his grace they are gifts

from God

and so whenever you look at Grace in

this text it also carries with it the

idea not only of a gift but of a gift

given somebody who to somebody who has

no merit before God who has done nothing

good to deserve it

in fact we Ascend against God and so we

only have demerit to offer God we have a

strike against us in God's book

Jerry Bridges tells a story from his

childhood to illustrate God's grace he

says that his family lived near a train

track whenever he was a boy and a lot of

times homeless men would ride these rail

cards on the train

they would often get out out at the stop

near his house and they would come to

his house and they would knock on his

door his mom would go to the door and

they would ask her for food

he said his mom would go into the the

kitchen and prepare a warm meal for

these men and serve these men a war Mill

he said they hadn't mowed their grass

they hadn't painted their house or

washed their Windows prior to asking for

the food

they showed up at the doorstep with

empty hands and empty pockets they

couldn't pay for the mill and they had

done nothing to deserve it and so this

is an illustration that shows us how God

freely blesses us whenever we don't have

any Merit before God

Bridges then adds a fictional side to

the story he says suppose that one of

these homeless men had stolen things

from our house the week before

when the man came to the door and my

mother saw him she recognized him as the

thief

this time when the man asked her for a

meal in her eyes he's done nothing to

earn it he has no merit before her while

at the same time he has stolen our

belongings and so my mother views him as

having demerit

instead of going to the phone to call

the police she again goes to the kitchen

and prepares a plate of worn food for

and this is like the divine grace that

we see God pour out upon his church in

our text today

God freely bestows and lavishes good

things upon his sinful people who only

have the Merit to offer him

and what is the greatest display of

Grace that he has lavished upon the

church

and John 3 16 we read

for God so loved the world that he gave

his only son so that whoever believes in

him will not have will not perish but

have eternal life

and so the greatest gift he gave was a

person it was his only son

it is only because of the giving of

Jesus that the father is able to bestow

upon us and lavish us with all the gifts

that's mentioned in this text

and that is what Paul repeats several

times in this passage all the blessings

that God gives are in and through Jesus

all the blessings that we have as the

church are because of what God has done

for us in Christ

God is a loving and gracious God and

this is his amazing character this is

who he is he has a desire to Lavish his

sinful people who don't have any good

deeds to present to him with love and

with Grace

he called us to himself informed the

church in order to bless us to express

his love and his grace and so the church

exists in order for God to have a people

to bless

and all these blessings that God has

given us in and through Christ are

special and they're wonderful

but as great as these blessings are in

themselves that is not God's ultimate

aim for the purpose of the church

God's ultimate aim is not to elect a

people to himself it's not to present

holy and blameless people before him

it's not to adopt us as Sons and

Daughters or to redeem us

so what is his ultimate amen blessing us

in love according to his grace why does

the church ultimately exist

let's look at Ephesians 1 11 through 14

where we see an example of the purpose

of the church driving the mission of the

church in him we have attained an

inheritance having been predestined

according to the purpose of him who

works all things according to the

Council of his will so that we who were

the first to Hope in Christ might be to

the praise of his glory and him you also

when you heard the word of Truth The

Gospel of your salvation and believed in

him were sealed with the promised Holy

Spirit who is the guarantee of our

inheritance until we acquire possession

of it to the praise of his glory

and so we remember that we said that the

purpose of the church is driving the

mission of the church in one part of the

mission the church's mission is

evangelism

and so we share the gospel of those who

don't know Christ as Lord and savior and

why do we do this

what is the purpose behind it it's what

we've already looked at in Matthew 28 so

that they may hear the truth believe and

trust in Jesus in order to become his

disciples and so we want people to come

to know Jesus and to submit to him as

Lord and savior

and what is the ultimate aim of that

purpose we see that in verse 12 so that

we who were the first to Hope in Christ

might be to the praise of his glory

and then in verses 13 and 14 you also to

the praise of his glory

and so the ultimate aim for people to

become Disciples of Christ is not a

person's salvation as good and wonderful

as that is but for a person's salvation

to reveal God's glory and for him to

receive praise for it

we also see this aim in Paul's doxology

in chapter 1 verse 3.

he says blessed be the God and father of

our Lord Jesus Christ

and blessed here it can be translated as

praise

and so you see Paul practicing the

doctrine that he is teaching he doesn't

just write down a bunch of facts and

doctrines about the church here

God's passion for the church has become

Paul's passion for the church he is

living out the ultimate aim for the

purpose of the church which is to

glorify God

and lastly we see it

whenever Paul sums up all this at the

end of chapter three so we see it

chapter 3 verses 20 through 21 now to

him who is able to do far more

abundantly than all that we ask or think

according to the power at work in a

within us to him be glory in the church

and in Christ Jesus throughout all

generations forever and ever amen

and when you get to the the top of

golden Mount you see a dome on the top

and on top of this Dome is a pillar with

a light on the top of it and if you were

able to stand on top of that light it

would be the highest point on the mouth

you couldn't go any higher and in the

same way whenever we look at the purpose

of the church and look at the ultimate

aim or the height of that purpose we

find that it is to display the glory of

God God is glorifying himself in the

what does it mean to what is the glory

of God

John Piper defines the glory of God or

tries to define the glory of God in his

book Desiring God he says glory is not

easy to Define it is like Beauty how

would you define Beauty

some things we have to point at rather

than Define but let me try God's glory

is the beauty of his manifold

Perfections

it can refer to the bright and awesome

Radiance that sometimes breaks forth

invisible manifestations or it can refer

to the infinite moral Excellence of his

character

in either case it signifies a reality of

infinite greatness and worth

and so according to Piper God's glory is

the beauty of his manifold Perfections

god is perfect in all the ways that God

is

he is perfect in his attributes and his

wisdom his power his presence and the

list could go on so all the ways that

God is perfect add up to form a beauty a

weight and Excellency a Grandeur a worth

of God which is his glory

and you can see the way that God has

whenever you can compare some of those

characteristics of God that are found in

US

God created us to have the ability to

have a certain amount of wisdom

we have a certain limited amount of

knowledge and we can apply that

knowledge to life in a limited way

but God knows all things he knows how to

apply that knowledge in every way and

and then in the very best way possible

God has created us to have a certain

limited amount of power God has given me

hands to build with I can make a cake

with ingredients I buy from the store

but God can speak a world into existence

by the power of His word

so we have these two characteristics of

wisdom and power like God has but God

has them to a much greater degree than

we do

and I think Piper is right in saying

that for some things like God's glory we

must point to rather than Define

no illustration can ever capture the

glory of God because it is the glory of

God

nothing can ever compare to it but I

think an illustration might help

before I propose to Carly I went

shopping for engagement ring and I did

some research online and experts say

that you must look for four C's when

looking at a diamond the first C is the

cut diamonds are a cut in a certain way

that reveal their beauty and so if if a

diamond is cut too narrow or if it's cut

too deep then it's not going to reveal

the the beauty of the diamond like it

could

the next is the color you want a

colorless Diamond you don't want any

hint of yellow in it the next is Clarity

you can take a magnifying glass and look

at the dime and you can see any

Perfections in it and those

imperfections will throw off the sparkle

of the diamond and then lastly you look

at the carrot which is the weight or the

size of the diamond the larger the

diamond the more beautiful the more

worthy and the more expensive it is

I would go into some jewelry stores and

look at the most expensive diamond they

had not because I ever thought about

buying it or that I could buy it but

because I wanted to look at the Quality

and the beauty of the diamond

some rings that I looked at were twenty

thousand dollars and so some of the

merchants they would come over they

would pull the ring out they would put

it on the top of the case for me to look

at it and I would kind of just back up a

little bit and say no thank you I don't

want to touch it and I would just say I

just want to look at the beauty from

afar and so I looked at several rings

and so I was able to to get a feel for

the worth of diamonds and so I would go

in and look at these

the biggest diamond they had and I would

see these diamonds and I would say wow

that is a diamond and so it would make

all the other dimes in the store seem

small it would make them look like a

little rocks compared to these big

beautiful diamonds

in a similar way God in all of his

Perfections is off the charts in the

four C's he has a weight a beauty a

worth that is so much beyond anything

and he in fact unlike diamonds or

anything else is in a class of his own

that we can barely understand and

describe with words

I think Exodus 14 2-4 can also help

point point us to what the glory of God

the Israelites God's people in the Old

Testament were slaves at one time in

Egypt they were forced to do hard labor

and they were not allowed to Worship the

Lord and the way that the Lord

instructed them to

and so God sent all these plagues these

swarms of flies these frogs against the

Egyptians so that they would send the

Israelites away and this eventually

works and so the Israelites are fleeing

Egypt and they're fleeing Pharaoh

they're about to cross the Red Sea and

what does God tell them to do

he says tell the people of Israel to

turn back and then camp in front of

pahirath between migdal and the sea in

front of Bowser fraud you show on Camp

and facing the sea

for Pharaoh will say of the people of

Israel they are wandering in the land

the Wilderness has shut them in and I

will harden Pharaoh's heart and he will

pursue them and I will get Glory over

pharaoh and all his hosts and the

Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord

and they did so

so what is God doing here he tells

Israel to to turn back to go in the

opposite direction so that Pharaoh will

think that they are lost and Pharaoh

will come after them

and why does God do this

Pharaoh was a a great and a powerful

leader in a great and powerful Nation

God was going to reveal his power over

pharaoh and over the Egyptians and how

does he do this

God through Moses Parts the Red Sea the

Israelites walked through to the other

side the Egyptian Army pursues and then

God closes the Red Sea killing the

Egyptian Army

and so God revealed his glory in his

magnificent and awesome power that he

showed over pharaoh and the Egyptians

when we look at our text of God forming

the church the glory of the Lord is

being revealed through his character

it's like taking a diamond and turning

it in the light and seeing it Sparkle

you say wow that is beautiful

through his love and grace he's

revealing how great and awesome he is he

is displaying his glory here through his

love and grace just like he's displayed

his glory through his power over the

Egyptians

and so the church exists for God to have

a people to demonstrate his character

and his attributes in order to reveal

his glory

God created the church to show off his

power his wisdom his love and

magnificence

the church acts like a

display board or a display case for

God's glory

when you have a display case or a

display board what are you usually

trying to do

you're usually trying to show off

something of significance or importance

when I was a young child I liked to go

to my go with my parents to a piece of

restaurant they would order take out

pizza and so I would go with them to to

pick it up and the restaurant was right

next to a karate studio and the studio

building had a large window in it and so

I would go as a little boy and I would

watch all these people practicing karate

and so I thought that was neat so I like

to go to watch them practice karate but

I also like to go and look at this

display case that they had in the studio

if you've ever been into a karate studio

you know how big the trophies are that

these people win I mean some of them are

higher than I are taller than I am and

so I like to go into to Marvel at these

trophies and I always wanted to become a

student so that I could get one of these

trophies

and what does the trophy do it

represents something and it points to

something they point to how talented the

person is who want it

the person who won it showed some

greatness a person won a tournament or

they broke so many bricks with their

fist to earn this Trophy and it's to

show the great feats that the recipient

has accomplished to get it

and so through election presenting us as

holy and blameless before him adopting

us and redeeming us these are like God's

they point out his great character and

reveal how great he is

doing all of these things in love

according to his grace but they are

ultimately for displaying his glory

so God has glorifying himself in the

so we've seen that the ultimate aim of

the purpose of the church is to glorify

God in the church let's look now at that

aim through the church

we see this in one of the prayers that

Jesus prayed for the church while he was

still living on Earth he is talking to

God the Father

in John 17

22-23 he says the glory that you have

given me I have given to them that they

may be one even as we are one i in them

and you and me that they may become

perfectly one so the world may know that

you sent me and loved them even as you

love me

and so God's love here just like we saw

in Ephesians is on display and this time

it's not only in the church but it's

through the church the glory of the

church in the world is a reflection of

God's glory and so the purpose of the

church is to be a light to the world

through its Unity as the church

functions in unity whenever we love one

another work together with one purpose

and Mission it expresses the unity of

so once again God is glorifying himself

in this time through the church

church is to glorify God and this has a

very vast and Cosmic scope to it

in Ephesians 3 7-10

Paul says this about himself

of this gospel I was made a minister

according to the gift of God's grace

which was given me by the working of his

power to me though I am the very least

of all the saints this Grace was given

to preach to the Gentiles The

unsearchable Riches of Christ and to

bring to light for everyone what is the

plan the plan of the mystery hidden for

ages in God who created all things so

that through the church the manifold

wisdom of God might be known to the

rulers and authorities in the Heavenly

places

and so the glory of God that is revealed

through the church is not only revealed

to those in the church and in this world

it is to be revealed to the rulers and

the authorities in the Heavenly places

who are these rulers and authorities in

the Heavenly places they are the Angels

and other hosts that God has created who

are in heaven

in First Peter 1 10-12 it tells us that

these angels in heaven have a great

desire to look at the work God is doing

in the church and to see his glory

it says concerning this salvation the

prophets who prophesied about the grace

that was to be yours searched and

inquired carefully inquiring want person

or time the spirit of Christ in them was

indicated when he predicted the

suffering of Christ and the subsequent

glories

it was a revealed to them that they were

serving not themselves but you and the

things that have now been announced to

you through those who preach the good

news to you by the Holy Spirit Sent From

Heaven things into which Angels long to

look

and so the Angels long to look into what

God is doing through the church they

long to look at God's wisdom his love

his grace displayed in the church that

reveal his glory

God's glory has always been the ultimate

aim of the purpose for God's people

if you look at God's people in the Old

Testament the nation of Israel you look

at what was supposed to be the center of

their life as a nation you would find

the temple and in the temple you would

find sections you would find them the

holy place and then you would find the

most holy place

and what was special about the most holy

place it was where God made his glory

known in a special and unique way

and so God's purpose to display his

glory has always been at the center of

his purpose for his people

God has always had one people with one

ultimate aim to make his glory known

and the church will spend eternity

viewing and enjoying the glory of God

seen in his grace shown in the church

in Ephesians

chapter 3 verse 21 we again read

to him be glory in the church and in

Christ Jesus throughout all generations

forever and ever amen

and then in chapter 2

verses four through seven it says but

God being rich in Mercy because of the

great love with which he has loved us

even when we were dead in our trespasses

made us alive together with Christ

by Grace you have been saved and raised

us up with him seated us with him in the

Heavenly places in Christ Jesus so that

in the coming ages he might show the

immeasurable Riches of his grace and

kindness towards us in Christ Jesus

and in my ESV Study Bible

the note on verse 2 or verse 7 in

Chapter 2 it says

verse 7 of chapter 2 answers the

question of why God lavish such love

upon his people so that they will Marvel

for all of eternity over the incredible

kindness and love of God it will take

all of eternity to Fathom God's love

and those who are saved will never Plumb

the depths of it

then in the Book of Revelation we get a

sneak peek into what will take place

into heaven in heaven

in Revelation 7

verses 9 through 12 we read after this I

looked and behold a great multitude that

no one can number from every nation from

all tribes and peoples and languages

standing Before the Throne and before

the lamb clothed in white robes with

palm branches in their hands crying out

with a loud voice salvation Belongs To

Our God who sits on the throne into the

lamb and all the Angels were standing

around the throne around the elders and

the four living creatures and they fell

on their faces before the throne and

worshiped God saying amen blessing and

glory and wisdom and Thanksgiving and

honor and power and might be to our god

so if we were to come up with a purpose

statement for the church what would we

say or what could we say

I think a good purpose statement for the

church would be the purpose of the

church is to Make Disciples of Christ

with the ultimate aim of glorifying God

what does all this mean for us as a

church why do we need to know the

purpose of the church

I think the first thing is to know where

we should focus as the church the

purpose of an organization is its

driving force it influences the mission

of what we do and the values how we do

it God has given us the mission and

values in his word that we'll look at

next week so we need to know these and

they are defined for us but it's easy to

go outside of these and think the the

church is required to to be something or

to do something and it's not

knowing the purpose of the church it

helps us to to focus on stay on the

tracks that God has laid for us so that

we don't Veer off track

God commanded Adam and Eve before sin

ever took place in the garden to take

care of the garden to take care of

everything that he created

in that command it still holds for us

today and so we are to take care of

God's creation we are to take care of

his creatures

but this is not the task of the church

some Christians in the church may be

called to do this as their occupation

but this is not our mission as a church

our purpose is to Make Disciples of

Christ so as we

so we as the church we don't open up a

veterinarian clinic this is not our

purpose and this shouldn't be our

passion our purpose at this church is

the discipleship of people for God's

glory

there have been several times in church

history when the the church and the

national government had been combined

the church influenced the national

government the national government

influenced the church

and there was a misuse and abuse of

power in both the church and the

national government and this should have

never had happened because the purpose

of the church is not to run the national

government the purpose of the national

government is not to run the church

and there's also a danger of not

understanding the full purpose of the

church what is the danger of only

understanding half of our purpose

statement when we only look at the

purpose of the church as being to make

disciples

if you take away that back engine car

that is driving the rest of the Train

the next engine car then drives it and

when this happens the church can become

man-centered instead of god-centered we

can think that the ultimate aim of the

purpose of the church is for the good of

man

and the church becomes about man and so

we have to be careful when we are

thinking and talking about the ultimate

Aim so that we do not diminish the

subordinate aims you don't want to say

God didn't create the church for the

good of man because he did

we disciple people so that they come to

know and to cherish and to enjoy God we

disciple people so that they are

equipped to go out into the world and to

love their neighbor

you don't want to diminish the good that

people experience from this but you have

to do something that we are often not

good at you have to hold two things that

are true and to elevate one and say this

is the ultimate aim it's not either

God's glory or man's good it's both

God's glory and man's good and these

connect but God's glory is at the top

but because the glory of God is the

greater the highest than we say that it

is the ultimate aim

it's like the light on top of golden

Mount the engine car is pushing the

train to destination a and it doesn't

stop until it gets there

and when we think about Redemption we

should say man this is good for man and

the rest

of the church God loves us so much that

he would send his son to die for us but

at the back of the train at the back of

the Train the engine car that's pushing

everything along it should be an

astonishment at and a drive for the

glory of God

so when we think about the purpose of

the church our thought should be God you

created us for the good of your people

which includes me but ultimately your

aim in what the church's aim should be

is to show and to point to your glory

another application is that we can draw

is that we are part of something Grand

it is tempting to to do as the preacher

did in Ecclesiastes and look at life

from an Earthly perspective

in Ecclesiastes the preacher looks at

life from an Under the Sun perspective

and he comes to the conclusion that life

is vanted to your meaningless

but we are part of something Grand we

have a great purpose

we get to be used by God to display his

glory not because of how good we are but

because of his love and grace

when we think about the purpose of the

church it helps us with one of our

greatest needs that we have which is to

take our eyes off herself so that we are

not the center of our own attention

and this is what we were made for

the word will tell us that we are made

to be the center of our attention when I

was looking at colleges in the states I

toured one school whose slogan was it's

all about you

and so there is a drive and there's a

push in our culture to make us think

that life is all about us and it's not

why do people like to sit on the beach

all day and stare at the ocean

why do we go to Hui hen

why do we go to Chiang Mai and look at

the mountains or look in the telescope

to see the unending galaxies

it is in search of something Grand there

is pleasure in losing yourself in

something that is bigger than yourself

Jimmy Carter a former U.S president

um dedicated his life after his

presidency to eradicating the guinea

worm and it's a worm that people get

from drinking contaminated water or

eating raw fish this worm can grow

inside a person to be a couple of feet

long and it will eventually make its way

outside the body by excreting acid so a

small hole

is formed in the skin and the worm

eventually comes out

and so in the mid 80s when President

Carter started this war on this worm

there were millions of cases of people

in Africa who were infected by it

and in 2022 there were only 13.

how did President Carter do it

it wasn't by himself he gathered a team

around him and how did he gather a team

he sold people on a vision and was

passionate about the purpose behind what

he was doing

people wanted to be involved in

something that was so big so huge that

we made such a huge impact

and so we were made to be part of

something that is larger than ourselves

and this is what our hearts were

designed for to lose ourselves in

something greater than ourselves

and there is nothing more significant

greater more valuable or better than God

which means there is no higher aim for

anything to display and point to his

what a calling what a purpose we have as

in the last application is that the

purpose of the church should prepare our

hearts for carrying out the mission of

the church next week we'll look at our

mission as a church and we want to be

like Paul and that the purpose of the

church it captivates our hearts as we

carry out the mission of the church

let's pray

dear heavenly father we thank you so

much for calling us to yourself we thank

you for

them in your church and love and in

Grace

the Lord we thank you for calling us to

be involved in the discipleship of your

people

I pray that you will help us to be

faithful to do that

faithful to be a light in this world

dear Lord you are using your church you

are working in your church to show your

love your grace your unity and so I pray

that you will help us to be that as

Grace City I pray that you will

Captivate our hearts

by this purpose

so that whenever we live out and do the

mission of the church still Lord we are

motivated

to see people come to know you to come

to love you

and ultimately to point to your glory

dear Lord we ask all this in Jesus
