right

let's start so over the past few weeks

we've been

looking at the Book of Ecclesiastes I

don't know about you but hearing about

the nuances of life and about however

how everything is ultimately meaningless

hearing about that week in and week out

for me is really depressing

it almost makes you wonder is preaching

the sermon also meaningless is coming to

church meaningless

no it's not and we'll see why

today we come to the 12th and final

chapter of Ecclesiastes

and you can find the text on the screen

all right I'll read this in English and

feel free to follow in Thai Ecclesiastes

verse one remember your creator in the

days of your youth before the days of

trouble come and the years approach

where you will say I find no pleasure in

them before the sun and the light in the

moon and the stars grow dark and the

clouds return after the rain when the

keepers of the house tremble and the

strongman stoop when the grinder cease

because there are few and those Looking

Through the Windows grow dim

when the doors to the street are closed

and the sound of grinding Fades when

people rise up at the sound of birds but

all their songs grow faint

when people are afraid of heights and of

dangers in the streets when the almond

tree blossoms in the Grasshopper And

grasshopper drags itself along and

desire no longer is stirred then people

go to their Eternal home and mourners go

about the streets remember him before

the silver core is severed and the

Golden Bowl is broken before the pitcher

is shattered at this at the spring and

the wheel broken at the well and the

dust returns to the ground it came came

from and the spirit returns to God who

gave it meaningless meaningless says the

teacher everything is meaningless

Not only was the teacher wise but he

also imparted knowledge to the people he

pondered and searched out and set in

order many Proverbs the teacher searched

to find just the right words and what he

wrote was upright and true the words of

the wise are like goads they're

collected sayings like firmly embedded

Nails given one by given by one Shepherd

be warned my son of anything in addition

to them of making many books there is no

end and much study whereas the body

now all has been heard here is the

conclusion of the matter fear God and

keep his Commandments for this is the

duty of all mankind for God will bring

every deed into judgment including every

hidden thing whether it is good or evil

this is the word of God

so

the final chapter of Ecclesiastes is a

summary of the whole book

and if you found the whole book

depressing no surprise surprise this

chapter fits right in

but this brings up the question why is

the idea of meaningless so depressing

Victor Frankel an Austrian psychiatrist

he says that the primary motivation of

human beings is the search for meaning

what that means is

meaning is what gives us fulfillment in

both the small things and the big things

for example if I told you to meet me at

terminal 21 tomorrow you would ask why

and then I would say oh don't worry

about it just meet me

but why

see you would want a reason you may say

if I'm going to spend my time traveling

to see you seeing you and getting back

if I'm going to invest my time there has

to be a reason for why I'm spending my

time or else I won't do it

that's understandable we want a reason

but if I ask most of us what is your

reason for your whole life

what is the reason you're doing your job

what is the reason you are getting

married

when your life is all over

what will you really have accomplished

many of us will not be able to give an

answer to these questions because we're

too busy running around to think about

it

we don't know the meaning of our own

life

but to be told that life is meaningless

is depressing

this is an incredibly realistic chapter

and it teaches us four things about life

one the fleetiness of Life two of the

reality of death three the certainty of

judgment

doesn't that sound depressing and for

the Assurance of Hope

so in verse 1 the author says remember

your creator in the days of your youth

before the days of trouble come

he doesn't say if the days of trouble

come

he says before

which means that the days of trouble are

coming

what's he doing he's saying that life is

short

and as we look through the first few

verses we see that the author is

painting a picture of the Journey of

we start off in our youth

and as we grow old things start to

happen

our physical abilities start to fade

we're not as fast or as strong as we

once were our mental Powers fade we

start forgetting things more easily our

loved ones start to pass away

our Ambitions and our dreams

that were once dreams are no longer

realized

the longer we live life

the less chance there is that we will

fulfill our dreams

as a teenager some of us may dream of

playing football for Liverpool only

Liverpool

when we get to a certain point and we

realize it's too late

how many times have we heard someone say

if only I did this when I was younger

the description in verses three to five

are poetry

and it's a metaphor for the aging

process and death

the keepers of the house trembling in

verse three

refers to the arms and hands which are

strong When We Are Young

but with age

they're just not as strong as they once

were and so they Shake

we see it says strong men stooping which

symbolizes the legs

legs that were once upright now begin to

stoop in old age

some of us I'm sure here have started

feeling the onset of knee pain and back

pain

the grinder ceasing here refers to the

teeth which can no longer chew

there's no longer enough teeth to chew

solid food and so before while we may

have chosen to eat fried chicken

our meal of choice now becomes soup

because it's no longer possible to grind

up food like we once could

the windows grow dim

and this refers to the eyes all of a

sudden we're not seeing as clearly as we

once did

we need more light when we read we need

glasses some of us even need two pairs

not only that the author continues the

sound of grinding Fades because we are

growing deaf

we once used to hear the grinding of the

mill but now it grows faint we once

could sleep in and get up as late as we

wanted but now we rise up at the sound

of birds

old age has given us insomnia

we're up late at night we get up early

in the morning sleeping less and less

the doors to the street are now closed

where there was once activity and bustle

where there was once markets and life

all that's left now are empty silent

streets

now some of us may be sitting there and

thinking yes that's me and we may only

be 25 years old

in which case we have ourselves a major

problem and what we need is to exercise

and adopt better lifestyle habits

but the section here ends with desire is

no longer stirred

which refers to the desire for things

that fill our lives when we're younger

marriage money power achievement

one day the author tells us this the

desire for these things will disappear

this is depressing isn't it

it's sad it's the same feeling we get

when we walk around a familiar place

maybe the place that we grew up

and we return to find that it's

completely changed

life is fleeting the author is telling

us it goes by so fast

suddenly we wake up one day we're 40

years old

suddenly we wake up one day

and our kids are in college or almost

there

suddenly we wake up one day and we look

in the mirror and we notice a Mark or

wrinkles that weren't there before

there is a real sense of loss

let's take a moment to think about your

own life and about how much things have

changed over the past 10 even five years

the author here is pointing us to the

inevitable passing of time

which brings us to our second point the

reality of death

it's just going to get worse and worse

so in verses six and seven we see a few

pictures

beautiful Golden Bowl is hanging

suspended by a silver chain

one day the cord snaps and the bowl is

shattered it's gone forever

the picture that was once used for

drawing water is now broken

the millstone that could once provide

life is now shattered

it's now useless

the dust returns to the ground it came

gave it

these are all images to describe the one

thing that is coming to us all death

everything in this life is going to be

taken away from us

our relationships our material

possessions

our status and achievement

death is coming for us all

now we're a relatively young church but

it's safe to say that

there is a lot of death in our futures

how's that

we're getting older

and if you look around

at your loved ones your family your

friends

either you and me will face death

ourselves because we will die younger

than we would like or we will live a

very long time and be facing the deaths

of everyone else around us

now our culture has not prepared us very

well for death our culture tells us us

that death is normal

It's The End

that's it

and so we shouldn't grieve because it

doesn't make a difference

what's the use of crying it doesn't

matter get over it it won't change its

thing that's just how life Works death

is a natural part of life that's what

our culture tells us

and modern medicine makes us feel

invincible

it prolongs and delays death

and so it leaves people many people

paralyzed with anxiety and fear

when confronted with death

and because we have not been prepared

very well for death

we don't like to confront it we choose

to avoid it it makes us feel unpleasant

and so we try to put it away

but the author of Ecclesiastes is

telling us especially in verses one and

two that there will come a time where we

can no longer put away the

unpleasantness

we will one day have to confront death

but we try to distract ourselves and not

think about death we try to get rid of

the feeling and escape from it

especially especially when we are young

enough to do so

how do we do that

says that God will bring every deed into

judgment including every hidden thing

whether it is good or evil

so he's saying there's going to be a day

where there is judgment and so because

there will be a day of judgment what we

should do is we should live our lives

knowing that there's going to be a day

of judgment this is how we should

approach Our Lives

but because we don't like thinking about

death how many of us actually live live

by this approach knowing that a day of

judgment is coming

throughout the Book of Ecclesiastes the

author has shown us three main

approaches to life that Humanity tries

to use

to distract ourselves

from thinking about death

so first in chapter one

he tries wisdom

he says if only I could gain wisdom then

I'll be satisfied

but he tries

and then he writes I came to realize

that the same fate overtakes them both

like the fool the wise two must die

so here's two people one is thinking

through everything thinking through the

right way to live

thinking about what is right or wrong

how do how they should use their

resources they're devoted to making

their country

their world a better place person number

one here's another person who doesn't

even think twice about life doesn't care

about others

they only care about themselves

and what Ecclesiastes tells us is the

same fate overtakes them both

the fool and the wise will be forgotten

both will die

so the author shows us wisdom doesn't

work because death comes for both the

wise and the foolish

he then goes and says okay well if that

doesn't work let's pursue pleasure so he

builds houses chapter two builds houses

planted Vineyards made Gardens Parks

planted all kinds of fruit trees he has

an endless supply of wine all the sexual

pleasure anyone could ever want all food

all the servants he builds for himself

essentially Paradise on Earth

and then what happens

in verse 2 chapter 2 verse 11 he says

yet when I surveyed all that my hands

had done

and what I had toiled to achieve

everything was meaningless at chasing

after the win nothing was gained under

the sun

he says it's chasing after the wind

remember last week when Ty was preaching

and he lit a candle and showed us what

chasing after the wind is like

what happens when you close your fist

and try to grab wind

you get nothing

so he's saying that's what happens when

we pursue pursue pleasure it doesn't

work

okay so he says okay let's now try work

let's live for achievement let's live

for work and in verse 17 of chapter 2 we

read so I hated life because work done

under the sun was Grievous to me

so he devoted himself to working and he

ends up with depression how many of you

feel that

he hated life how many of us resonate

with that we're overworked working long

hard hours late hours early into the

morning spending nights at the office

how many of us resonate with that so I

hated life

but why why does he hate life he

continues in verse 18. I hated all the

things I had toiled for under the sun

because I must leave them to the one who

comes after me

what's he saying

he's saying it's meaningless because he

cannot take with all the things he's

worked for with him when he dies

he has to leave it for the person who

comes next and who knows in chapter two

it says who knows whether that person

who comes after him is wise or foolish

ultimately

he's going to die

and so he shows us that living for

wealth living for pleasure

living for work living for achievement

living to be wise or to be good

all of this is meaningless

question is why what what makes it

meaningless

it's all the same death death is what

makes it meaningless it's just like he

says here and the dust returns to the

ground it came from and the spirit

returns to God who gave it meaningless

meaningless says the teacher everything

is meaningless

the main things that we live for today

that we make our purpose and our meaning

in life work success morality wisdom

money

pleasure

because we will one day die

it's all meaningless

but these are the things that we use to

distract ourselves

from the fact that we will die one day

a certain person puts it this way

if we're on a sinking ship

does it really make a difference if we

go down hugging

or mugging

if we're on a sinking ship and someone

tries to mug you someone says give you

your wallet what are you gonna say are

you gonna say no don't it's my life

savings no you'd say go ahead and take

it why because facing death forces us to

prioritize what is really important take

it anyway take my wallet we're all gonna

die in five minutes

and the fact of the matter is

we are all going to die in five minutes

in a sense life is so short

life is fleeting Buddha was right when

he said that life is birth old age

sickness and death

life Under the Sun is suffering life

without God

is like this

it's just like the author says

everything is meaningless

why because everything is touched by

Death

but you know when when we say and when

our culture says oh death is just

natural

all that does is Harden us

it kills a part of us that makes us

human

what is the deepest desire of your heart

what is it that makes your life

meaningful

is it success

sure partly

is it health

is it money

sure partly but what if you had all

these things you had money you had good

health you had success but you had

nobody in your life to love you

nobody in your life for you to love

it would all be meaningless wouldn't it

the deepest desire of our hearts is for

love that lasts

what makes our lives meaningful are the

people we love and the people who love

us

and to say it's okay death is a part of

life it's killing something inside of us

the Bible tells us that death is not the

way things should be

death is not not a friend death is not

right it's not natural in John 11.

when Lazarus dies

lazarus's sisters Mary and Martha come

out to meet Jesus

and what does he do

he doesn't tell his sisters lazarus's

sisters don't worry he's in a better

place now

he doesn't say it's okay be strong don't

cry

do you know what he does

he weeps he doesn't say anything he just

Weeps

and when he gets to lazarus's tomb in

the Greek it says Jesus was quaking with

rage the English doesn't say this you

have to look at the Greek he was quaking

rage he knew he was going to raise

Lazarus from the dead in a minute but

he's weeping he's angry he's mad

question is how could the lord of the

world be angry at something in this

world

the answer is Jesus could only be angry

at something if it was an intruder if it

was not part of his original design

we were not meant to die

we were meant to last

it's not part of God's original design

Jesus's anger Jesus's tears show us that

death is not normal it's a monstrosity

so cry be angry weep grieve that it's

this way it shouldn't be

so why is it

verse 13 and 14 says now all has been

heard here is the conclusion of the

matter fear God and keep his

Commandments for this is the duty of all

mankind for God will bring every deed

into judgment including every hidden

thing whether it is good or evil

so in light of the fact that we will die

and that everything will be brought into

judgment one day the only possible way

according to Ecclesiastes the only

possible way to live a life of meaning

is to fear God and keep his Commandments

now fearing God does not mean to be

terrified of God or being scared of God

rather fear God means and the Bible

means to be overwhelmed with Wonder

before the greatness of God and his love

and it means that we find God fearfully

beautiful

it means bowing before God in amazement

at his glory and beauty

but what most modern people including

Christians what most of us fear

the fear is if I obey God I will not be

happy

if I keep God's Commandments

I won't be happy

and this is the same lie that Satan told

Adam and Eve in the garden

we were created for God

Humanity turned away from God we believe

the lie of the serpent in the garden who

said don't fear God don't keep his

Commandments God does not really care

for you

if you really obey God if you really

trusted God you'll be miserable

we believe that and when we did that

when we turned our backs on God it

messed everything up

that's when death came into the world

that's When sin came into the world

that's why everything is touched by

death it's not natural it's not how the

world is meant to be

see the Dilemma on the one hand we long

for a love that lasts but death takes

away everything

there's a problem here

and the way that we try to solve it

is instead of living for God instead of

fearing God and keeping his Commandments

we live for other things like money

Romance

success

pleasure which because we will be judged

and because we will die

all these things are meaningless

so fearing God how do we do that

that's the question isn't it how do we

fear God and keep his Commandments and

Ecclesiastes tells us

that it begins with

undoing the lie that has made its way

down into our hearts and the key to

doing this the key to undoing this lie

is in verse one

it says remember your creator

remembering God

remember your creator

that means to concentrate on

it's a completely intentional Act

where we abandon our self-sufficiency

remembering who God is and Who We Are

so to remember God one thing that was

what that means is remembering that we

were designed

by God

which means we have ultimate worth and

value

and that were made in His image

it means to remember that we can depend

on God that God is trustworthy that God

is good that keeping God's Commandments

won't make us miserable but rather is

the only thing that gives us lasting

peace and satisfaction and meaning

and as we remember our creator

we have even greater resources to undo

the lie that has made its way into our

hearts

the lie that says if I obey God I am

missing out

God does not really care for me

question how can you be utterly utterly

sure that God cares for you how can you

have complete confidence that trusting

God and being obedient to God will bring

you last this lasting satisfaction and

peace how can we say that how can we

have hope

how can we look at death and say do your

worst it won't hurt me

remember Jesus Christ

Jesus face death head on

in the garden Matthew 26

he realizes what he's about to face he

says my soul is overwhelmed to the point

of death

because that night

Jesus face and deaths on the cross he

could have turned around and said no I

don't want to do it

but he did

and when he did he was looking towards

two things

the joy of pleasing his father

the joy of redeeming his friends this is

how you can be sure

that Jesus Christ cares for you that God

cares for you this is proof

that God cares about us the proof is

that he himself is willing to suffer he

got involved he took what we deserve

this is how every one of us in this room

can be utterly sure that God cares for

us we look to the cross

but do you know what's even greater than

that

the resurrection

because three days later Jesus rose from

the grave when he did that he defeated

death

he conquered it and do you know what

that means

that means we have incredible hope for

the future

Jesus Christ reversed death death no

longer has the final say

one day we will be raised and everything

in this world will be put right

there isn't going to be any suffering or

death anymore

this is the Christian hope

Jesus has conquered death

he has passed through death and he's put

an end to it

and this is why Paul can say in First

Corinthians 15 death has been swallowed

up in Victory where oh death is your

Victory where or death is your sting

The Sting of death is sin and the power

of sin is the law but thanks be to God

he gives us Victory through our Lord

Jesus Christ this is what Jesus offers

to us all

when you become a Christian Jesus does

not say if you trust in me someday I

will take you away from all this he

doesn't say someday I will take you to a

wonderful Paradise where your soul will

have nothing to do with this world

Jesus Christ gives us Resurrection

what Jesus says is I have not come to

take you out of the earth to heaven but

I've come to bring the power of Heaven

down to earth

to make a new Heaven and the new Earth

and to make everything new

I am going to restore everything that

was lost and it will be a million times

better than you can imagine

this is the power of my future the power

of the new Heaven and Earth joy and

wholeness will come tears suffering and

death will be wiped out everything will

be made right again the resurrection

means that everything said is coming

untrue do you want this come to Jesus

that's all it takes put your trust in

him

Jesus Christ the son of God Who Came

From Heaven died on the cross so that we

could be forgiven so God could one day

destroy evil and suffering without

destroying us do you believe the gospel

there are a lot of people here a lot of

us here who do believe the gospel but we

really have not activated it this week

we haven't thought about it our hearts

have not leapt

we haven't wept when we've thought about

this let today be that day

Jesus Christ the one who came face death

head on to resurrect the whole world do

you believe this there is so much hope

in the resurrection

this melts the LIE this allows us to

fear God and keep his Commandments this

is the only thing that makes all other

things meaningful

and this allows us to face death with

hope

many of us here today have experienced

the death of a loved one it's horrible

it's not how the world should be the

Bible tells us to be angry to cry to

weep

yesterday

a lot of us may know Tim Keller passed

away

he fought pancreatic cancer for three

years and some of his final words were

I'm thankful for the time God has given

me but I'm ready to see Jesus I can't

wait to see Jesus send me home there is

no downside for me leaving not in the

slightest

Tim Keller once said

that everything in this life will be

taken away from us except one thing

God's love

which can go into death and take us

through it and into his arms

we are to grieve death yes

but grieve with hope

the resurrection means

we can wake up and be at peace laugh in

the face of death and sing for Joy at

what's coming

if Jesus Christ has Us by the hand we

can sing

let's remember that let's remember our

creator let's remember Jesus Christ

let's pray

father we thank you for the ultimate

hope that we have in you

Lord we thank you that this light

is the light that can never be put out

by the darkness no matter how bad our

circumstances may be

Lord we pray that through your Holy

Spirit you would make this hope real and

meaningful to us even today

we pray that

or that you would bring people to you so

why would you renew us and help us to

trust in you in Jesus name we pray amen

","":
Grace
