right hello everybody hope your

weeks have been well

we are currently in a series where we're

looking about looking at what the Bible

says about the church

so what is the church

is the church the Christian version of

what which is Temple what is the purpose

of the church

some of us may have been coming to

church for a long time because we think

this is what Christians do we come to

church

this series The study on the church is

meant to help us all come to terms with

the incredible resources that God has

given us

in order to live and transform the city

so today one of the questions we're

looking at is what is the place of the

church in our society

so our text for today comes from First

Peter chapter 2.

and I'll read to us

the text

all right First Peter chapter two as you

come to him the living Stone rejected by

humans but chosen by God and precious to

him you also like living stones are

being built into a spiritual house to be

a holy priesthood offering spiritual

sacrifices acceptable to God through

Jesus Christ

for in Scripture it says see I lay a

stone in Zion a Chosen and precious

Cornerstone and the one who trusts in

him will never be put to shame

now to you who believe the stone is

precious but to those who don't believe

the stone the Builder is rejected has

become the Cornerstone

and the stone that causes people to

stumble in a rock that makes them fall

they stumble because they disobey the

message which is also what they were

destined for but you are a chosen people

a royal priesthood a holy nation God's

special possession that you may declare

the Praises of him who called you out of

Darkness into his wonderful life

once you are not a people but now you

are the people of God once you had not

received Mercy but now you have received

Mercy

dear friends I urge you as foreigners

and Exiles to abstain from sinful

desires which wage war against your soul

live such good lives among the pagans

that though they accuse you of doing

wrong they may see your good deeds and

glorify God on the day he visits us this

is the word of God

so first Peter is a letter addressed to

a group of people who have seen

tremendous suffering

much worse than any of us in this room

they are people living in a hostile

environment and in this section of First

Peter we're being told how Christians

are to live in a world that's hostile

how do people who believe one thing

are to live in a culture

who has a very different view of things

how do we live when everyone around us

believes something different

how do we handle pressures in the

workplace and from society

does this sound familiar

these are the exact kinds of questions

we ask or should be asking here in

Bangkok too

and so from this text we learn three

things about the church

one we learn about what the church is

two we learn about our relationship as

the church to the world

and three we learn about where to get

the power to live in this world

so one of the images that Peter gives us

for the church

is here in verses four and five

we are like living stones being built

into a spiritual house to be a holy

priesthood offering spiritual sacrifices

acceptable to God through Jesus Christ

so we like living stones

are being built into a spiritual house

a spiritual house means the Temple of

the holy spirit this comes across more

clearly in Thai where it says

Temple of the holy spirit so when we

become Christians we are indwelled with

the Holy Spirit

God's presence comes down and lives

inside of us

now one Theologian makes an observation

that

almost every place where the Bible says

we are a temple of the Holy Spirit

we are addressed collectively

it's plural it's not individual

so when it says you also like living

stones are being built into a spiritual

house it's referring to us as community

it's also referring to the present tense

we are being built

we haven't been completely built yet

but we are being built into a spiritual

house

so think about this image

every brick in a wall

has Stones both above and below it

the stones that are above the brick

depend on the brick

if the brick is moved or taken out

the whole structure becomes shaky and

collapses

and the stones that are below the brick

support the brick

so you the brick

have many stones that you depend on

if those bricks shake you shake

think of the game Jenga what happens

when you remove one of the pieces

the whole structure becomes unstable and

eventually it collapses

this is the image of the church

interdependence Community is so strong

that we're built into the lives of

others it's Fellowship

but most people will come to church on

Sundays

listen to the sermon

stay for Fellowship time or for Sunday

school and then go home

the question is are we built into the

lives of others

are we part of a body

a church where we are so built in that

if we stop coming things would collapse

being interdependent means that we don't

just see each other once a week

but it means we share our lives together

it means we share decisions together we

don't just make our own decisions we

share struggles we share emotions we

share money we share homes we share help

we share everything

and this text is telling us that when we

are being built together

that is how the power of the Holy Spirit

increasingly comes into our lives it is

as we are being built together

the Christian faith is not just me and

God

we can't live like that

separated from everyone and only

prioritizing having a quiet time with

we can't expect God to be working in our

lives

to the full extent

if we are really not built into a body a

community like this

we find the Lord mainly in community

so someone may say well how does that

work how come

the CS Lewis in his book The Four loves

he brings out this point

C.S Lewis was part of a close group of

friends and one of them Charles Williams

died

and so when when his friend died C.S

Lewis realized something very

interesting

he says when Charles died I didn't just

lose Charles

I lost the part of Ronald his other

friend that only Charles brought out

another way of putting it is

I don't know Ronald like I used to

because Charles is no longer here to

help me know Ronald

he says in each of my friends there is

something that only some other friend

can fully bring out

now that Charles is dead I actually have

less of Ronald too

he's saying the human personality

is so rich

that one person doesn't bring it all out

you actually get to know an individual

far better in a group than you would one

on one because only a group brings out

the whole person

and if that's true of a human being

how much more true is that of God with

we can't know God as deeply unless we

are in deep community

we can't know God as deeply by ourselves

our brothers and sisters see aspects of

God that

You Don't See

and it's only together that we will see

God more and more truly

we can't know God by ourselves we can

only know a peace of God by ourselves

and conversely the part of God that we

see if we're not in a community that's

something that we're holding back from

other people that they need

and they see something that we need

see interdependence

many people may think that we can live a

flourishing Christian Life by reading

the Bible and praying to God by

ourselves without going to church at all

but that just isn't true

God does not act like that we are being

built together like living stones

see so we see that the church is a

community

now if that's the case if the church is

a community it brings up the question

that all communities face

what is our relationship to the world

outside

what's the relationship of the church to

society

so

Peter tells us something about how the

church ought to relate to the world and

it's a radically different way of

relating to the world than how other

religions do

because other religions and people

groups just people groups in general

relate to the culture by one of two ways

one separating from society

two becoming a part of society

they're both two extremes

separating from society or completely

integrating with society that you lose

your identity you lose what makes you

different

so the groups that separate from society

tend to have very rigid beliefs you have

to believe x y z and you can't interact

with Society you need a separate

we've seen these kinds of groups in

recent times it is US versus them

and these kinds of groups view society

as evil they'll say Society is corrupt

and we want nothing to do with them

throughout history different Christian

groups have adopted this approach

they've separated completely from

now on the other hand

the groups that integrate with Society

tend to say things like just come we're

inclusive we'll accept everybody it

doesn't matter what you believe we'll

just be good people we'll love everybody

we'll accept everybody

this on the surface this sounds

attractive right

but at its root

even though these groups Express

themselves differently

the root is the same

it's about power

so here's how one way to get power is to

assimilate assimilate right you say

we're no different than anyone else we

welcome everybody and so by doing that

what we end up doing is reflecting the

cultural values of society we reflect

the cultural values of the elite leaders

and this happens on the micro level too

doesn't it

we may have a boss or a supervisor that

we don't like

but we want to stay on their good side

so what do we do we laugh at their jokes

we don't outright disagree with them

even if we don't think the same way we

don't disagree them because we want to

stay on their good side we want to stay

in power

and we see this happening in all of

wanting to avoid getting on the bad

sides of people in power and so we stay

silent when we should be speaking up

we completely assimilate we give in to

the values of society

but another way to get power

is to separate your demonized Society so

we tell people how different we are we

speak up and we cause Conflict at every

chance possible

we tell people how bad the world is and

how we are the only ones who stand for

truth we are the only lights in this

corrupt Society this is also about power

it only looks different

it's not characterized by love for our

neighbors or love for our society or

love for our city we demonize society

and so we separate

now the Bible tells us

that we are actually

supposed to be neither

we are not supposed to separate from

society and hate Society

and we're not supposed to assimilate and

lose our identity

so in John John 17 for example Jesus

tells us that we are to be in the world

but not of it

and here Peter tells us in verses 11 and

12 it tells us dear friends I urge you

as foreigners and Exiles to abstain from

sinful desires which wage war against

your soul

glorify God on the day he visits us

so what Peter is doing here

is he's telling us that we are

foreigners and exiles

what does that mean

well a lot of you may know when you go

to another country

um welcome y'all interns when you go to

another country you immediately know

that there is something different about

you

you don't share the same culture the

same language perhaps even the same

values

you may share a similar appearance but

when you start to talk to them and

investigate you realize you're different

how many of us have had someone come up

to us

or how many of us have gone up to

someone speaking Thai to them expecting

them to be able to speak Thai back but

then they end up speaking Chinese to us

what's interesting

is about how Peter uses the term here

Peter is speaking to people of the same

nationality the same ethnicity

he's speaking to Romans in Rome

he's speaking the Greeks in Greece

people who have lived there all their

lives people who have families who have

lived there all their lives

so how are they

Peter is speaking about the kind of

relationship that we as the church have

with Society

see he says as as foreigners and Exiles

he's talking about status he's telling

us that we may not assimilate we may not

conform to the societal values

Peter is saying when you become a

Christian you become a foreigner you

become an alien

how does this work

well one reason that this works is

because Christians did not keep their

faith private it actually shaped how

they live so people in public could see

they could see that there was something

different about them

their face shaped how they lived

their decision their decisions in the

public sphere in the workplace and how

they choose to spend their time and

money it was shaped by their faith and

people could see it

they didn't try to hide that they were

Christian in fact they couldn't hide it

because they were counter-cultural

so something about some of the things we

know about the early church the earlier

Christians is one they didn't go to

bloodthirsty entertainment so they did

not go and watch Gladiators fight to the

death

so they were considered anti-social

secondly they didn't serve in the

military they didn't support Conquest

three they were against abortion in that

culture if a family had a baby

and it was not the gender that they

wanted generally if it was a girl it was

acceptable to kill the baby

so they didn't support abortion they

also empowered women in leadership in

ways that was different to society

they were also against sex outside of

marriage they were against same-sex

practice so they were considered weird

by Society

they were also radically for the poor

and in their Gatherings they mixed the

classes together in ways that were

considered unacceptable so when they

gathered there was no such thing as high

or low class for the early Christians

and they believed that Jesus was the

only way to Salvation

see they were aliens they weren't like

the Greeks they weren't like the Romans

they weren't like the Jews

they weren't like anybody

they were aliens they did not fit into

any major cultural group

and that's true of us too whenever

Christians whenever we pick up the

values of the gospel and we start living

it out we're aliens

where foreigners

we don't fit in with Society

but we don't separate from the culture

either

so the Greek word for foreigners here

speaks of someone who has committed to

stay there

they're not tourists

they're not just passing by briefly

but they have come and they are

permanent residents they live there

they are committed to the city

they're different but they're not going

anywhere

in verse 12. verse 12 says live such

good lives among the pagans that though

they accuse you of doing wrong they may

see your good deeds and glorify God on

the day he visits us so this is the same

idea

where Jesus says that we are to be Salt

and Light of the Earth

so let our light shine in such a way

that people see our good deeds and

glorify God

in first Thessalonians 1 Paul writes

your faith in God has become known

everywhere they tell how you turn to God

from Idols to serve the living and true

so good deeds in the New Testament does

not mean good behavior

it actually means doing good it means

serving

and this this right here is the amazing

posture to which Peter calls us as the

we're not supposed to separate from

we're not supposed to confirm conform

and assimilate to society

there is an amazing balance here

so if we assimilate we don't suffer we

get on the good side of power and

everybody thinks we're normal everyone

thinks we're okay

but if we separate we don't suffer

either because we just separate

and everybody thinks we're weird

everybody thinks there's something wrong

with us but what happens if we are very

we maintain our Biblical values we live

differently but instead of separating we

engage

we engage with our society we serve we

come close we love our neighbors we give

ourselves to our city

then what

see it doesn't say the faith community

is good the city is bad Peter is not

saying that

Peter's saying they will accuse us of

wrongdoing they will think we're

different they will accuse us they have

to because our World Views are so

different if we are faithful to Jesus

and we live our faith not publicly then

of course there will be

misunderstandings of course they will

accuse us because we have a completely

different logic system

and yet Peter's saying there will always

be some sort of common ground

Peter says they will accuse you of

wrongdoing and see your good deeds

Peter says they will recognize our Good

Deeds what does that mean

that means every culture has common

Grace in it

every person is made in God's image

every person has worth value dignity

wisdom Insight the image of God is

stamped on every person Christian or not

so every culture in some place will have

overlap with Biblical values they will

recognize some beauty

in what Christians are doing

so one example of this is the human

rights movement

so many many people who aren't Christian

today believe in human rights that every

human has value significance and worth

but this was not always the case

so slavery the selling and trading of

humans has been a practice for thousands

and thousands of years

and philosophers such as Aristotle

actually argued for slavery Aristotle

said that some people are born to be

slaves naturally because they're not

able to be able to be rational

so for these people

who did not have the capacity to use

their minds and be rational maybe

they're not as smart it was justified

that they were slaves

but it was the Christians that fought

against slavery

so Gregory of Nissa for example he was

the Theologian and Pastor in the 4th

Century he began to criticize slavery

and it's it's very likely that he was

the first person to speak out against

slavery in the ancient world because we

don't have any documents of anyone else

who opposed slavery we only have his

critique against slavery and what he

argued is that since everyone is created

in God's image no one could be given a

man-made price

everyone was free

and treating a human made in God's image

like transferable property was a sin

That's the basis of human rights that

were all made in God's image and

therefore we have the right to life to

dignity to respect and this is something

that our society today values

which is an outworking of the Gospel

however

do you take the idea of not having sex

outside a marriage and you talk to

someone on the street of Bangkok what

would they think

you're crazy

they won't like that at all

they'd like the idea of Human Rights but

ridicule the idea of not having sex

before marriage see we're aliens and

strangers there's a tension that we have

were not assimilated but we're not

separated either we're loving them we're

loving our city we're serving people

that's the posture and when we do this

we will be accused of wrongdoing

we will suffer

expected

be gracious

don't be surprised when it happens be

different and gentle

this is how we witness

think about someone in your community

pray for them

think about ways to engage with them in

a way that's gentle

we are to be non-defensively different

how do we engage Society

here's a good question if Grace city was

no longer here would our community would

would assault would Bangkok would anyone

notice

now the question

comes up is how how do we engage with

Society in a way that's gentle and

non-defensively different

well Tim killer makes the very

interesting observation about people

he says

a lot of Christians go out into the

world and find it very tough to navigate

he says I think it's because they don't

understand the gospel not because they

can't answer all the theological

questions

the way we get the power to do this to

engage with our society is the gospel

we see this in verse 4. Peter says as

you come to him the living Stone

we need to come to him the living Stone

we need to come to Jesus well how do we

do that firstly we need to recognize

that we're building our lives on

something

verses 6 and 7 it says see the the stone

the Builder is rejected has become the

Cornerstone

the Bible says we should be building on

Jesus Christ the Cornerstone

and it says the stone the builders

rejected has become the Cornerstone what

does this mean

we're the builders we're all building

our lives on something

and the way to find out what you're

building your life on what we're

building our life on what our foundation

is the way to find out

is by asking the question what is my

greatest nightmare

what is it

it was taken from me

will make me lose the will to live

when everything falls apart

what do you look to

what are you hoping

do you say I'm still a good person when

everything falls apart do you say I'm

still a good person or I've succeeded

I'm a successful business person

or at least this person or that person

or at least my family still loves me

I'll be okay

what what is it if taken away from us

will make us lose the will to live what

is our greatest nightmare

many athletes when they're playing their

sport

everything goes well

but once they get injured or retire

oftentimes they lose themselves they

struggle a lot

why is that

because for many people their sport was

their identity

they built their life on it and now that

it's taken away with retirement

they don't know what to do

and anything we build our lives on other

than Jesus Christ will let us down

it cannot hold up to the entire weight

of Our Lives

it will let us down

how well we'll never feel as if we're

doing enough we'll never feel like we're

enough

if business if success and business is

our life

we will feel like a failure unless we're

making profit

and when we are making profit we'll want

more

well there's there'll never be enough

we'll feel like we don't have a self

we'll feel like we can't control

ourselves

if we're making a lot of money if our

career is working out we feel great we

feel on top of the world

but as soon as things start to go bad we

feel ashamed

we feel like a failure

anything we build our lives on other

than Jesus Christ will put us to shame

but it says here in verse 6 see I lay a

it's only Jesus Christ

on whom if we build we will never be put

to shame

now this this goes beyond believing that

Jesus is God

or believing Jesus died for my sins this

goes beyond that it's not just believing

with our heads

see it says to you who believe this

stone is precious

he's precious

he has to become precious to you what

well imagine a doctor

comes to you

and tells you that you only have a week

to live

and then you'll die

and the one thing that can save you is

this medicine

what would you say

sure hand it over I'll take it yeah give

it to me the doctor continues wait a

minute

this medicine is really expensive it'll

cost you your car

your house

all your savings

you'll have to live in a much smaller

home

so I'm not sure if you still want it

what do you say that's okay I'll do it

give it to me I need the medicine what

good is my car or my house if I'm dead I

can't take those things with me I'll

sell it all for the medicine I'll give

up everything for this medicine

what's going on here the medicine has

become precious to you you recognize how

much you need it and you're willing to

give up everything for this medicine

everything else that used to be valuable

are now things that you're willing to

give up for the medicine why because

it's become precious to you

is Jesus precious to us

until Jesus is precious to us until he

is that beautiful that lovely

so that everything else becomes things

that we are willing to give up

the only way Jesus Christ can be our

Cornerstone the only way we can never be

shaken

is if Jesus is precious to us

is he

someone may ask how how does Jesus

become this precious to me

and Peter tells us

him

come see why Jesus was rejected

Jesus Christ came and his people

rejected him his family rejected him at

the end of his life his disciples

rejected him and on the cross Jesus

Christ cried out my God my God why have

you forsaken me

everyone rejected Jesus

he's the ultimate Foreigner

he's the ultimate one who's in Exile

but what does he do when he's rejected

he doesn't separate

he doesn't give in and assimilate

what does he do

what was it say verses 23 24 it says

when they hurled insults at him he did

not retaliate when he suffered he made

no threats instead he entrusted himself

to him who judges justly

he himself bore our sins in his body on

the cross so that we might die to sins

and live for righteousness

what does he do he suffers he doesn't

attack back he stayed and he stayed

until the end why why did he do it

because we were precious to him

and when we see how precious we are to

Jesus

that he

the Son of God God himself would go to

the cross and die to pay the penalty for

our sins and give his life so that we

could be set free

from the powers of sin

when we see how precious we are to Jesus

then he becomes precious to us

and that's how we can come to Jesus that

this is what it means to be a Christian

the moment we unite to God and Jesus

Christ because of what Jesus has done

were accepted if Jesus is beautiful to

the father then we are beautiful to the

father

if God says about Jesus this is my

beloved Son with whom I'm well pleased

when we unite to Jesus God says that

about us too

and if we know that we are loved like

if we know deep down that we are

accepted by God and loved by God and

more precious than all the stones in the

Earth

it's only then that we could go out into

the world and instead of saying

who if I hang out with them with them

will make me feel good about myself

instead of saying that we can say

who looks like they just need someone to

hang out with

who looks like they just need a friend

we go out not looking to be accepted but

we go out looking to be loving

because it's no longer about us

because the value of the love the

significance the worth that we've been

looking for we find it in Jesus Christ

and because we know how Jesus Christ

suffered for us

we are so secure

that we can interact with people

who see the world differently from we do

that we do

people who even accuse us of wrongdoing

we can interact with them and not get

defensive not get insecure not try to

defend ourselves when somebody says your

views on sexuality are very weird and

unkind or you don't have sex before

marriage you are so old-fashioned when

someone says that

we don't get defensive

we don't lash out

we're kind

because we know how much Jesus Christ

suffered for us and loves us that we can

be patient with people who misunderstand

us we can be kind we can be gentle we

can be non-defensively different

because we have the love of the king

we can move out into the world

and be a salt and light of the Earth

let's pray

Lord we father we come to you and we

pray

Lord through your spirit that you would

make these truths very real to us today

Lord we pray that you would help us to

meditate

on the fact that you Jesus suffered for

us

learn that we are completely secure in

you Lord give us the assurance that we

need Lord help us as a community as the

to be Salt and Light of the city Jesus

name
