might need some help with this there

we go

C.S Lewis wrote this about the ultimate

purpose of the church he wrote this the

church exists for nothing else but to

draw men to draw humans into Christ to

make them little christs if they are not

doing that

all the cathedrals clergy Mission

sermons even the Bible itself

are simply a waste of time

God became man for no other purpose it

is even doubtful you know whether the

whole universe was created for any other

purpose it says in the Bible that the

whole universe was made for Christ and

that everything

everything is to be gathered together in

him

this evening

[Music]

yes God is building his church

and Christians are being formed more and

more to be like Jesus

in The Gospel of Matthew Jesus makes a

wondrous statement regarding the church

uh

you'll never played I will build my

church and the Gates of Hell shall not

Prevail against it

there are two truths Illustrated here

one Jesus builds the church

he's the author the Creator he's

bringing all things together in and by

his power

and secondly nothing

will thwart disturb ruin or destroy the

work of Jesus

the church is God's plan

it's God's doing and nothing

even the gates of hell like the the

summation of all evil being represented

by the Gates of Hell nothing will

prevail against it

so friends the church is a visible

display of God's Redemptive work in the

lives of those around us and yes even in

our very lives as well you know

foreign

God is building his church

God's good and eternal plan is on Full

display a particular people

gathered together

in and through the good work of God

in this sermon series we've looked at

God's purposes for the church

we've considered the role the church is

to play in society

we've seen the church as Christ's body

unified in its diversity

we've seen the church as Christ's bride

loved cherished LED protected and

Redeemed by him okay good time

and today

we turn our Attention our Focus to the

truth revealed in the scriptures that

the god of the Bible is the god that

gathers and is present with his church

dwells with us God dwells with the

church

our primary text is from the Apostle

Paul's letter to the church in Corinth

I'll read the text in English

this is the word of God from First

Corinthians we'll read chapter 3 verses

9 and then 16 and 17. for we are God's

fellow workers

you are God's field God's Building

do you not know

that you are God's Temple and that God's

spirit dwells in you

if anyone destroys God's Temple God will

destroy him

for God's Temple is Holy and you are

that Temple yeah

let's pray together okay

God we ask that you would open our

hearts and Minds to your word today

I know

show us as a people reveal to us as a

church how we are to live out the truths

of the Bible

we ask that you would convict us of our

sin that you would show us where we are

following our own path and not your way

lead us to you in the grace that you

lovingly bestow

we pray this in your Holy Name Lord

Jesus amen

so Paul's letter to the church in

Corinth it was written with very similar

intent uh to what is found in his other

letters to various churches

remember these letters they were written

to churches to teach core doctrines

truths of the faith they were written to

challenge and to correct sinful action

yes they were called to to help those

sinning before God to move them towards

repentance

they were to teach and instruct

Christians many of them knew Believers

in the way that they should live before

God

so the gospel the good news of who Jesus

is the gospel changes everything

opposite yeah

it relates and it changes how we relate

to God it changes how we interact with

those around us

Paul is wanting to emphasize this very

thing in his letters

as you uh read through First Corinthians

you'll see how Paul was challenging the

Christians at Corinth to grow in their

maturity in the Lord

the church was divided over its leaders

they were squabbling and arguing over

Petty matters oh yeah

Paul admonished them to grow up

you're still you're still worldly Paul

writes you're still worldly

he writes you know you're like little

children like infants in Christ I gave

you milk not solid food because you're

not ready for it here

and then there's this line that really

stings he says that even now you're not

ready you're still of the flesh you're

still worldly about me

so Paul is saying you need to Humble

yourselves in the Lord and grow into a

mature faith in him

this is what Paul wants his readers

wanted his readers to hear and to act

upon

how do we feel

how do we feel when someone corrects us

I'll use it yeah

it's not always a pleasant feeling is it

I mean

we may feel frustrated defensive yeah

we may try to deflect what the other

person is saying or try to minimize

their message all right so yeah the

teams

or even just ignore it

when is the last time

someone corrected you

how did you feel

now what if and hopefully this was the

case for you but what if that correction

that admonition that encouragement

is based in love

what if it's based in a deep love and

care for you

it changes the meaning and the purpose

behind the message doesn't it

that's what's happening in Paul's

letters and in this letter here to the

church in Corinth he cares

for them he cares for them okay

deeply for the Christians at Corinth and

he's writing these harsh words out of

love for them

a real desire

a desire for them to grow and mature in

and through Jesus Christ

all right so this is the context of what

we read in the letter okay this is why

he's writing these things

we're looking at just a few verses

tonight

so verse 9 Paul he's using Collective

language here he says we are God's

you are God's field God's Building this

you is a collective you

but you never actually made us

Paul is speaking about the church

and the amazing truth that God chooses

to work in us and through us

um

it's astounding really that God invites

us to join him in his work in this world

God does not need

us but he invites us

he desires our participation in his

unfolding work in this world

I recall hearing a story about a young

man he was recounting a memory from his

childhood foreign

he remembered helping his father build a

shed in their backyard when he was

really young boys

so the boy remembered using his plastic

hand tools

and he he worked on various tasks that

his father gave him like bring me some

Nails bring these pieces of wood to me

he even got to use his father's power

saw a couple of times with the father's

health of course

and it wasn't until years later that it

dawned on him

that this activity with his father was

really about just spending time with his

father

the father and son just enjoying those

days together seeing that project come

to fruition

now it's obvious to us and it became

obvious to him later there was no way he

could have built that shed on his own

God many times

he couldn't handle the real tools

foreign he couldn't have built that

himself

but his father had chosen to include him

had welcomed him and invited him to join

in the work

which way yeah

and they accomplished the task together

and so he had seen that you know years

later he realized this was just this is

just time with my father time helping my

father my father

and he saw the love behind that he saw

the care behind that invitation to

participate and to play a role

so how much more for the church

we are God's fellow workers Paul writes

you are God's field God's Building you

church are the work that God is doing in

building

yeah

and God is building you for his purposes

in verses 16 and 17 Paul turns his Focus

to the church as God's Temple a possible

and he uses inquisitive language

you know questions uh this questioning

language to emphasize his message do you

not know

are you not aware

that you are God's Temple that the

spirit of God dwells in you welcome

Paul is saying don't you realize the

magnitude of this truth Church don't you

realize this

right what is it that makes the church

a temple God's Temple

it's God's presence

God inhabiting the church by his spirit

now the Greek word for temple naos

refers to the sanctuary itself

and this was the place of the deities

dwelling this is where the deity dwelled

in the temple

there's another Greek word Heron which

is used to describe the broader full

Temple area but the word that Paul uses

here is naos you

Church you are the place where God

dwells

God inhabiting the praise of his people

yes the church is the temple of God God

builds his church he inhabits the praise

of his people

he dwells among those that call out to

him those who come to him by faith he's

building the church and he fills the

and we see the reality of God's presence

as the temple the church

we see that the church is made holy and

Sacred By The Very presence of God

that God dwells with us and Among Us is

a serious and glorious reality

what happens what happens when you have

a guest

come and stay in your home

you know you you clean up you you

prepare to honor your guest right

you prepare for their stay because you

want to demonstrate that you care about

them

you know perhaps there's normally some

uh some poor behavior in the home

Montana oh

maybe there's some bickering between the

children or arguing between the spouses

maybe there's a sinful attitude that

everyone's just out to see their own

desires and needs met

well ideally all of that would would

change when a guest comes to stay right

there but yeah

we want them to feel welcome we want to

think about their own Comfort not our

own okay

we think about their needs above our own

oh yeah

we want to offer a peaceful environment

for their stay yeah

how much more

when the creator of all

dwells with us

what an astounding truth it is that God

dwells with his church

that God dwells with his people

his presence changes us

his presence leads us

scripture is replete with this story

again and again

the story of God dwelling with his

people leading them saving them guiding

them a little louder

think about Adam and Eve in the Garden

of Eden God dwelling with them providing

for them even as they sinned against him

comfortable

but then God demonstrating mercy and

clothing them in their nakedness

though their sin you know drove them out

of the garden God had mercy on them and

spared them from immediate death for

their sins

think of God dwelling with his people as

he delivered them from slavery in

captivity in Egypt

God providing for them and guiding them

through the Wilderness to the promised

land

uh foreign

God dwelling among the People by filling

the Tabernacle with his presence

helping to lead them and to guide them

then Jesus

stepping into this world that he created

being called Emmanuel which means god

with us

God sending the promised one the Messiah

the one who saves to live on this Earth

to minister to others to ultimately give

his life in sacrificial death

that all who look to him in faith will

have everlasting life in him

and then Jesus promising to send the

Holy Spirit to be with his people to be

with the church

this is what Paul is trying to to get

across to the Christians in Corinth

don't you realize this truth

don't you live with this reality

the God who loves you the God who saves

you God is in your midst God dwells with

you

so Paul's admonition to the early church

is for us as well it has ramifications

for how the church lives in worship and

in community

humanization

how are we living with the reality that

God dwells in us and Among Us

this is a corporate reality Remember You

The plural the church

how are we using the gifts God has

bestowed upon us in worship of God in

service of the church in community

are we delighting

in the reality that God dwells among us

as a corporate body

do we realize the significance of what

God has brought together here at Grace

City or in the church that you're a part

of so let's understand

as we continue to read through

Corinthians and and the second letter to

Corinthians and even the letter to the

church in Rome Paul writes to challenge

and encourage the individual individual

Christian as well

First Corinthians 6 19 do you not know

again a question do you not know that

your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit

who is in you

whom you have received from God you are

not your own

yes

what agreement can exist between the

temple of God and idols

second Corinthians again chapter 6 verse

16 for we are the Temple of the Living

God as God has said I will dwell with

them and walk among them I will be their

God and they will be my people

and then in Romans chapter 8 verse 9 we

read this you however

are controlled not by the flesh but by

the spirit

if the spirit of God Lives in You

and if anyone does not have the spirit

of Christ he does not belong to Christ

at the core of Christian doctrine is

that God dwells with the believer

s

changing our reality and and working

through us for the blessing of the other

for the good of the community

so Church how are we

how are we moved by this today by this

truth

how are we living in community with

others in the local church that God has

placed Us in okay

how are we seeing our own sin and being

moved to repentance because of the

presence of God

coming back

how are we serving as a witness of the

love and grace of God to the city around

us

I'm black

now all these questions have answers or

we're growing and seeing them answered

and we're seeing them answered as God

dwells with us and works through us

so let us turn to him again and again in

worship obedience and delighted

now just in closing it just a few

thoughts to help us practically apply

this to our own lives yeah

so if you're a Christian if you're a

follower of Jesus ask yourself this

is

how am I living in community with with

others given the reality that the spirit

of God dwells within me

am I extending to others the grace mercy

and love that I have received from God

there's an ecclesial dimension for the

how am I fulfilling my role in the local

church that God has placed me in

how am I to serve and minister to this

community of Believers and in the city

around me

you know at Grace city

um we realize week in and week out that

some that attend may not call themselves

Christians they they may not say you

know I'm a follower of Jesus

and if that applies to you first of all

we are so thankful that you're here

and we respect that you likely have real

questions and doubts about the Christian

faith

and my hope for you today is that you

would consider

what you've heard from the Bible today

could all this be true

what if God is true

and God entered our world and entered

into our pain and suffering to bring

rescue and Hope

if you'd like to speak more about this

um we would love please let us know we

would love to do that okay yeah

we'd be honored to to hear from you to

share more about what Christians believe

in closing

I just want to read from the book of

Revelation which gives us a picture

of the Eternal reality

of God's presence with us

then I saw a new Heaven and a new Earth

for the first Heaven and the first Earth

had passed away

and this sea was no more

and I saw the holy city New Jerusalem

coming down out of Heaven from God

prepared as a bride

adorned for her
