um have been here last few weeks you<\/p>\n
know we've been going through a series<\/p>\n
of the Psalms<\/p>\n
I think we need pizza's microphone<\/p>\n
turned on or turned up<\/p>\n
okay so yeah I think you heard that<\/p>\n
maybe uh we've been studying a series of<\/p>\n
the Psalms<\/p>\n
and we actually a great City you know<\/p>\n
we've been doing 10 Psalms a year<\/p>\n
today we're reading Psalm 78.<\/p>\n
now this part of the Bible it's actually<\/p>\n
songs<\/p>\n
you know it helps us to remember to<\/p>\n
realize that these texts these lyrics<\/p>\n
are songs<\/p>\n
and just as singing is so expressive in<\/p>\n
the Psalms we find the full range of<\/p>\n
human emotions<\/p>\n
foreign we see joy and unfettered praise<\/p>\n
but we also see English and anger and<\/p>\n
confusion and fear<\/p>\n
you could say we see our own lives our<\/p>\n
own hearts on display in the Psalms<\/p>\n
so as you hear this Psalm read today<\/p>\n
think about that think about your own<\/p>\n
life<\/p>\n
what thoughts dreams fears occupy your<\/p>\n
heart and mind right now<\/p>\n
what brings you Joy or you know what's<\/p>\n
troubling you even<\/p>\n
what is it that you're unsure of<\/p>\n
consider all this consider this and and<\/p>\n
listen to the word of God<\/p>\n
because we believe that God speaks to us<\/p>\n
through his word the bible<\/p>\n
let me pray for us as we begin<\/p>\n
holy God we we thank you that we can<\/p>\n
gather today for worship and to hear<\/p>\n
from your word<\/p>\n
some of us have joyful Hearts some of us<\/p>\n
feel great and some of us are heavily<\/p>\n
having a hard time right now<\/p>\n
money<\/p>\n
help us Lord today to remember you are a<\/p>\n
God that has peace<\/p>\n
for us<\/p>\n
so however we feel today<\/p>\n
we pray<\/p>\n
that you would come and meet us where we<\/p>\n
are that you would encourage Us in these<\/p>\n
circumstances<\/p>\n
in your holy name amen<\/p>\n
Amen Let me give you a little bit of<\/p>\n
background to the psalm before we we<\/p>\n
look at it okay A little bit of<\/p>\n
background<\/p>\n
um<\/p>\n

the last couple of weeks if you want to<\/p>\n
go back and listen we've read through<\/p>\n
psalms 76 and 77 based on somebody<\/p>\n
and those psalms and this psalm are<\/p>\n
attributed to a psalmist named asaph<\/p>\n
as these Psalms have the same author the<\/p>\n
same writer<\/p>\n
we would do well to look at some common<\/p>\n
themes running throughout<\/p>\n
remember Psalms are songs<\/p>\n
yo humans like you like me pouring their<\/p>\n
hearts out in lyrical form<\/p>\n
foreign<\/p>\n
songs about God's goodness his presence<\/p>\n
God's power<\/p>\n
thankfulness unto God God's Deliverance<\/p>\n
also songs of of questioning and<\/p>\n
petition and crying out to God<\/p>\n
if you've opened your Bible already you<\/p>\n
can see that Psalm 78 is very very long<\/p>\n
and so we're not going to read all of it<\/p>\n
tonight<\/p>\n
I'd love to but it's very long<\/p>\n
so you have homework okay<\/p>\n
tonight or sometime this week I want you<\/p>\n
to read all of Psalm 78.<\/p>\n
so homework homework for everybody okay<\/p>\n
but what we'll do we're going to read<\/p>\n
through portions of it and we'll<\/p>\n
understand we'll see an overarching me<\/p>\n
meaning and we'll see what truths we can<\/p>\n
glean from it<\/p>\n
and I think for for time's sake<\/p>\n
um each section uh I will read and we'll<\/p>\n
read English and we have the Thai also<\/p>\n
thank you<\/p>\n
this is the word of God<\/p>\n
Psalm 78<\/p>\n
verses one through four<\/p>\n
a math School of asaph<\/p>\n
give ear o my people to my teaching<\/p>\n
incline your ears to the words of my<\/p>\n
mouth<\/p>\n
I will open my mouth in a parable<\/p>\n
I will utter dark sayings from of old<\/p>\n
things that we have heard and known<\/p>\n
that our fathers have told us<\/p>\n
we will not hide them from their<\/p>\n
children<\/p>\n
but tell them to the coming Generation<\/p>\n
The Glorious Deeds of the Lord and his<\/p>\n
might and the Wonders that he has done<\/p>\n
he established a testimony in Jacob<\/p>\n
and appointed a law in Israel which he<\/p>\n
commanded our fathers to teach their<\/p>\n
that the Next Generation might know them<\/p>\n
the children yet Unborn<\/p>\n
and arise and tell them to their<\/p>\n
so that they should set their hope in<\/p>\n
God and not forget the works of God but<\/p>\n
keep his Commandments<\/p>\n
and that they should not be like their<\/p>\n
fathers a stubborn and rebellious<\/p>\n
generation a generation whose heart was<\/p>\n
not steadfast whose Spirit was not<\/p>\n
faithful to God<\/p>\n
the overarching theme of this Psalm is<\/p>\n
laid out in these first few verses<\/p>\n
is calling out to get the attention of<\/p>\n
the readers and<\/p>\n
what is his message<\/p>\n
listen<\/p>\n
and know<\/p>\n
and remember what God has done<\/p>\n
set your hope in God<\/p>\n
tell of God's wondrous Deeds<\/p>\n
tell the story to each other tell the<\/p>\n
story to the coming Generations<\/p>\n
in verse 1 Asif starts this Psalm with a<\/p>\n
strong word<\/p>\n
May<\/p>\n
what black God they Putin<\/p>\n
they say content wrong<\/p>\n
give ear o my people saying listen<\/p>\n
listen to me listen to my teaching<\/p>\n
and he continues essentially stating I'm<\/p>\n
going to be sharing a teaching from of<\/p>\n
old but it's a truth it's a message that<\/p>\n
we've heard and we know<\/p>\n
this is what our fathers have taught us<\/p>\n
so so why the earnest this why the sense<\/p>\n
of urgency<\/p>\n
why the concern<\/p>\n
because the people have forgotten<\/p>\n
we are prone to forget we're prone to<\/p>\n
forget and wander away from God<\/p>\n
and the rest of this song it details an<\/p>\n
ongoing pattern<\/p>\n
and we'll see it<\/p>\n
God displays his goodness and power he<\/p>\n
works on behalf of the people of Israel<\/p>\n
and they turn to God in Repentance Faith<\/p>\n
worship<\/p>\n
and they forget then they forget and<\/p>\n
they wander away they turn away<\/p>\n
but there's a consistent thread that<\/p>\n
runs through this cycle and that is the<\/p>\n
threat of God's mercy and his<\/p>\n
faithfulness<\/p>\n
some years ago I was reading this<\/p>\n
article and was fascinated by this it's<\/p>\n
it was about a group of Volunteers in<\/p>\n
Japan known as denshosa<\/p>\n
these citizens they spent time with<\/p>\n
survivors of the atomic bombs that were<\/p>\n
dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki<\/p>\n
meaning<\/p>\n
they spent time getting to know them and<\/p>\n
listening and learning the details of<\/p>\n
their stories<\/p>\n
they became memory Keepers and they're<\/p>\n
prepared to recount these stories to<\/p>\n
Future Generations by<\/p>\n
as the memories of these survivors fade<\/p>\n
and as many of them near the end of<\/p>\n
their lives their stories the details of<\/p>\n
their experiences have been internalized<\/p>\n
by another<\/p>\n
and you know I thought um<\/p>\n
that could be done with video that could<\/p>\n
be done with with written word right<\/p>\n
but they've had someone listen sit and<\/p>\n
listen with them and and hear their<\/p>\n
story ready to tell it<\/p>\n
these memory keepers<\/p>\n
so I was reminded of this obviously as I<\/p>\n
Was preparing uh to speak on Psalm 78.<\/p>\n
this Psalm is is calling for Israel to<\/p>\n
remember the goodness of God<\/p>\n
don't forget what he has done for you<\/p>\n
tell the wondrous things that God has<\/p>\n
done<\/p>\n
tell them to the coming Generations<\/p>\n
in fact verse 5<\/p>\n
alludes to that very thing alludes to<\/p>\n
some law or commandment or statue or<\/p>\n
decree that was in place it was part of<\/p>\n
judaic practice<\/p>\n
you know families fathers families<\/p>\n
teaching their children<\/p>\n
and we see this beautiful<\/p>\n
multi-generational blessing<\/p>\n
families teaching their children and<\/p>\n
their children teaching their children<\/p>\n
and so on and on and on<\/p>\n
look like<\/p>\n
so great City how does this encourage<\/p>\n
and challenge us<\/p>\n
we just finished a series before this on<\/p>\n
the church<\/p>\n
and perhaps one of the most glorious<\/p>\n
aspects of a local Gathering of<\/p>\n
Believers is this to know our Collective<\/p>\n
stories in Jesus Christ<\/p>\n
and to share those stories with one<\/p>\n
another and with our city<\/p>\n
listen this way<\/p>\n
to be Memory keepers of what God has<\/p>\n
done and to share with his generation<\/p>\n
with this generation and the Next<\/p>\n
Generation<\/p>\n
to remember and to not forget and to<\/p>\n
help one another remember and not forget<\/p>\n
sometimes we need to hear another<\/p>\n
believer<\/p>\n
remind us of truths we may easily forget<\/p>\n
it<\/p>\n
sometimes we need someone else to come<\/p>\n
alongside us when we feel weak we feel<\/p>\n
broke<\/p>\n
this is what it means to live in gospel<\/p>\n
Community to see Jesus and work in our<\/p>\n
hearts and in the lives of those around<\/p>\n
us<\/p>\n
so what happens what happens when we<\/p>\n
forget<\/p>\n
in Psalm 78 reading on<\/p>\n
let me read this<\/p>\n
the aphromites<\/p>\n
armed with the bow turned back on the<\/p>\n
day of battle<\/p>\n
they did not keep God's covenant but<\/p>\n
refused to walk<\/p>\n
according to his law they forgot his<\/p>\n
works and the Wonders that he had shown<\/p>\n
them<\/p>\n
in the sight of their fathers he<\/p>\n
performed wonders in the land of Egypt<\/p>\n
in the fields of his own<\/p>\n
he divided the sea he let them pass<\/p>\n
through it and made the waters stand<\/p>\n
like a heap<\/p>\n
in the daytime he led them with a cloud<\/p>\n
and all the night with a fiery light<\/p>\n
he split their Ox in the wilderness and<\/p>\n
gave them drink abundantly as from the<\/p>\n
deep<\/p>\n
he made streams come out of the Rock<\/p>\n
and caused<\/p>\n
Waters to flow down like Rivers<\/p>\n
Asif<\/p>\n
details how this tribe of Israel the<\/p>\n
ephraimites they turned away<\/p>\n
they did not keep God's covenant they<\/p>\n
forgot God's works and wonders<\/p>\n
and Asif makes this list here he says<\/p>\n
you know God parted the sea god LED you<\/p>\n
Faithfully by day and by night and<\/p>\n
you've forgotten<\/p>\n
God gave them water in the desert<\/p>\n
he gave them water for their thirst and<\/p>\n
they'd forgotten<\/p>\n
they've forgotten in spite of God's love<\/p>\n
for them his protection his provision<\/p>\n
for them<\/p>\n
yet they still sinned more against him<\/p>\n
rebelling against the most high in the<\/p>\n
desert they tested God in their heart by<\/p>\n
demanding the food they craved verse 19<\/p>\n
they spoke against God<\/p>\n
saying can God spread a table in the<\/p>\n
wilderness<\/p>\n
he struck the rock so water gushed out<\/p>\n
and streams overflowed can he also give<\/p>\n
bread or provide meat for his people<\/p>\n
therefore when the Lord heard he was<\/p>\n
full of Wrath<\/p>\n
a fire was kindled against Jacob his<\/p>\n
anger Rose against Israel because they<\/p>\n
did not believe in God and they did not<\/p>\n
trust his saving power<\/p>\n
yet he commanded the skies above<\/p>\n
and open the doors of Heaven<\/p>\n
and he rained down on them Manna to eat<\/p>\n
and gave them the grain of Heaven<\/p>\n
do you see<\/p>\n
do you see the patience and mercy of God<\/p>\n
here<\/p>\n
I don't know if it stood out to you as<\/p>\n
we read this but you know verses 19 and<\/p>\n
20 they're an outright mocking of God<\/p>\n
you know sure you gave us water we see<\/p>\n
it we drink it we're Satisfied by it but<\/p>\n
can you give us food too can you do that<\/p>\n
do you see the the mockery of of God in<\/p>\n
that<\/p>\n
name my<\/p>\n
and the psalm then details the severity<\/p>\n
of God's righteous<\/p>\n
judgment<\/p>\n
we see that he does graciously provide<\/p>\n
food but some of the people are punished<\/p>\n
for their outright sin towards God is<\/p>\n
in verse 30 we read this<\/p>\n
but before they had satisfied their<\/p>\n
craving while the food was still in<\/p>\n
their mouths the anger of God Rose<\/p>\n
against them<\/p>\n
and he killed the strongest of them<\/p>\n
and laid low the young men of Israel<\/p>\n
in spite of all this in spite of all of<\/p>\n
this they still sinned despite his<\/p>\n
wonders they did not believe<\/p>\n
so he made their days vanish like a<\/p>\n
breath<\/p>\n
and their years in Terror<\/p>\n
when he killed them<\/p>\n
they sought him<\/p>\n
they repented and sought God earnestly<\/p>\n
they remembered that God was their Rock<\/p>\n
the most high God their redeemer<\/p>\n
but they flattered him with their mouths<\/p>\n
they lied to him with their tongues<\/p>\n
their heart was not steadfast toward him<\/p>\n
they were not faithful to his Covenant<\/p>\n
these verses are hard to read<\/p>\n
it's hard to understand the mercy and<\/p>\n
love of God in the midst of God's<\/p>\n
righteous judgment towards the people<\/p>\n
you might have a question you might say<\/p>\n
how can we reconcile God's goodness his<\/p>\n
love and this kind of judgment<\/p>\n
wrote this in his book The reason for<\/p>\n
God it's a very long quote but I think<\/p>\n
if we take some time with this it's very<\/p>\n
helpful<\/p>\n
you see what the reason for God<\/p>\n
and<\/p>\n
I would like for you to translate this<\/p>\n
so we'll spend some time with this yeah<\/p>\n
today many of the Skeptics I talked to<\/p>\n
say as I once did they can't believe in<\/p>\n
the god of the Bible<\/p>\n
who punishes and judges people because<\/p>\n
they believe in a god of love<\/p>\n
I now ask what makes them think God is<\/p>\n
love<\/p>\n
can they look at life in the world today<\/p>\n
and say this proves that the god of the<\/p>\n
world is a god of love<\/p>\n
can they look at history and say this<\/p>\n
all shows that the god of history is a<\/p>\n
god of love<\/p>\n
can they look at the religious texts of<\/p>\n
the world and conclude that God is a god<\/p>\n
of love<\/p>\n
by no means is that the dominant ruling<\/p>\n
attribute of God as understood in any of<\/p>\n
the major faiths<\/p>\n
I must conclude<\/p>\n
that the source of the idea that God is<\/p>\n
love is the Bible<\/p>\n
itself<\/p>\n
and the Bible tells us that the god of<\/p>\n
is also a god of judgment<\/p>\n
who will put all things in the world to<\/p>\n
rights in the end<\/p>\n
the belief in a god of pure love who<\/p>\n
accepts everyone and judges no one is a<\/p>\n
powerful Act of Faith<\/p>\n
not only is there no evidence for it in<\/p>\n
the natural order<\/p>\n
but there is almost no historical<\/p>\n
religious textual support for it<\/p>\n
outside of Christianity<\/p>\n
the more one looks at it<\/p>\n
the less Justified it appears<\/p>\n
conditions<\/p>\n
so we read of God's righteous judgment<\/p>\n
over the people but we also see his<\/p>\n
mercy and patience displayed on<\/p>\n
in verse 38 we read this yet he being<\/p>\n
compassionate<\/p>\n
atoned for their iniquity<\/p>\n
and did not destroy them<\/p>\n
he restrained his anger often and did<\/p>\n
not stir up all his Wrath<\/p>\n
he remembered that they were but flesh<\/p>\n
a wind that passes and comes not again<\/p>\n
how often they rebelled against him in<\/p>\n
the wilderness and grieved him in the<\/p>\n
desert they tested God again and again<\/p>\n
and provoked the Holy One of Israel they<\/p>\n
did not remember his power<\/p>\n
or the day when he redeemed them from<\/p>\n
the foe when he performed all his signs<\/p>\n
in Egypt and his Marvels in the field of<\/p>\n
Zone<\/p>\n
God remembering the weakness<\/p>\n
of the people the Frailty of the people<\/p>\n
oh<\/p>\n
God understanding our weakness our<\/p>\n
Frailty<\/p>\n
and we see this repetitive pattern again<\/p>\n
in verse 41 the people testing God<\/p>\n
taunting God provoking God<\/p>\n
foreign you know you read the Bible and<\/p>\n
you think did they ever learn<\/p>\n
Ed<\/p>\n
what<\/p>\n
and then we ask ourselves like will will<\/p>\n
we ever learn Ed<\/p>\n
so we see the Rebellion against God it<\/p>\n
continues the idolatry persists can<\/p>\n
bro<\/p>\n
yeah they tested and rebelled against<\/p>\n
the most high god did not keep his<\/p>\n
testimonies but turned away and acted<\/p>\n
treacherously like their fathers they<\/p>\n
twisted like a deceitful bow they<\/p>\n
provoked him to anger with their high<\/p>\n
places they moved him to jealousy with<\/p>\n
their idols<\/p>\n
as we near the end of the psalm<\/p>\n
we read about God working to restore and<\/p>\n
to lead the people<\/p>\n
there are consequences yes sin can have<\/p>\n
difficult ongoing consequences<\/p>\n
but God is merciful and loving in the<\/p>\n
midst of his righteous Justice<\/p>\n
he is present with us and is faithful to<\/p>\n
lead us as we follow him<\/p>\n
God's ultimate Mercy was demonstrated<\/p>\n
through Jesus<\/p>\n
this is an essential and vital Christian<\/p>\n
truth and you could think he's<\/p>\n
a Christian that Jesus Took up took on<\/p>\n
our sin and died for us<\/p>\n
and we experience the mercy of God<\/p>\n
through the sacrificial death of Jesus<\/p>\n
so<\/p>\n
what do we make of all this what do we<\/p>\n
think about all these things<\/p>\n
I don't know if you noticed but at the<\/p>\n
beginning of this Psalm it's listed as<\/p>\n
what's called a mascul um<\/p>\n
some resources describe a mascul as a<\/p>\n
meditative song<\/p>\n
a song that would be sung in communal<\/p>\n
settings yes but also a text that one<\/p>\n
would sit with<\/p>\n
that they would meditate on that they<\/p>\n
would think over and consider more<\/p>\n
deeply<\/p>\n
playing<\/p>\n
so how do we do that very thing today<\/p>\n
how do you do this when you do your<\/p>\n
homework<\/p>\n
how do we walk away from Gathering today<\/p>\n
with a different or deeper understanding<\/p>\n
of who God is and God's truth<\/p>\n
the psalm the song ends like this<\/p>\n
he built his Sanctuary like the High<\/p>\n
Heavens like the Earth which he has<\/p>\n
founded forever he chose David his<\/p>\n
servant and took him from the sheepfolds<\/p>\n
from following the nursing use<\/p>\n
and he brought him to Shepherd<\/p>\n
Jacob His People Israel his inheritance<\/p>\n
with upright heart he shepherded them<\/p>\n
and guided them with his skillful hand<\/p>\n
what is your response to this what is<\/p>\n
your response to this psalm<\/p>\n
s like<\/p>\n
the call of this Psalm is for all of us<\/p>\n
our hearts struggle with the same<\/p>\n
ongoing cycle of knowing and forgetting<\/p>\n
of following and turning away of<\/p>\n
professing and being tempted towards<\/p>\n
unbelief<\/p>\n
our honest prayer in all of this can be<\/p>\n
help us Lord Jesus help us<\/p>\n
be reminded of God's work in your heart<\/p>\n
is<\/p>\n
tell of his Works to your heart<\/p>\n
remember what he has done<\/p>\n
and recount retell these things to<\/p>\n
others<\/p>\n
remember his love for you and follow him<\/p>\n
hello<\/p>\n
and we are so grateful a great City<\/p>\n
sometimes people come and they are not<\/p>\n
sure what they believe about God about<\/p>\n
Jesus about Christianity<\/p>\n
and maybe this Psalm maybe it gives you<\/p>\n
questions real questions about all of<\/p>\n
this is<\/p>\n
and my prayer for you is that that you<\/p>\n
would consider this ancient song This<\/p>\n
ancient text<\/p>\n
s<\/p>\n
does it speak to your heart in any way<\/p>\n
does it resonate with your soul<\/p>\n
could there really be a God and a God<\/p>\n
that loves you<\/p>\n
a God that took on Humanity and came to<\/p>\n
this earth as Jesus who lives Among Us<\/p>\n
and can sympathize with us<\/p>\n
and would you heed the words that asaph<\/p>\n
wrote to set your hope in God<\/p>\n
ERS here in fact any of the the members<\/p>\n
of gray City would love to talk to you<\/p>\n
and hear your questions<\/p>\n
we would be honored to talk with you<\/p>\n
about these things and to hear what you<\/p>\n
really think<\/p>\n
so when closing friends let us remember<\/p>\n
what God has done<\/p>\n
things<\/p>\n
our hope is in him<\/p>\n
let us tell the story<\/p>\n

God we come to you with that prayer<\/p>\n
today help us help us<\/p>\n
Israel saw Many Wonders they saw amazing<\/p>\n
things that they could not deny and yet<\/p>\n
they<\/p>\n
turn from you and we think I would never<\/p>\n
do that and yet we have that in US<\/p>\n
so we need you<\/p>\n
we need you to lead us and to help us<\/p>\n
and to protect us to give us faith and<\/p>\n
to grow our faith<\/p>\n
in you<\/p>\n
when we're tempted to turn away or to be<\/p>\n
our own Gods<\/p>\n
to walk in our own way would you remind<\/p>\n
us that you love us<\/p>\n
that you have given yourself for us<\/p>\n
and you want to lead us<\/p>\n
help us Lord Jesus to follow you<\/p>\n
we ask and pray<\/p>\n
in your holy name<\/p>\n
