we're glad that you're here if

you're visiting tonight we're thankful

that you are here we look forward to

getting to speak with you getting to

welcome you getting to know you

thank you to pee songpun for coming to

translate tonight the sermon will be in

English and peace

okay he'll be translating to Thai for us

uh if you

um have been here last few weeks you

know we've been going through a series

of the Psalms

I think we need pizza's microphone

turned on or turned up

okay so yeah I think you heard that

maybe uh we've been studying a series of

the Psalms

and we actually a great City you know

we've been doing 10 Psalms a year

today we're reading Psalm 78.

now this part of the Bible it's actually

songs

you know it helps us to remember to

realize that these texts these lyrics

are songs

and just as singing is so expressive in

the Psalms we find the full range of

human emotions

foreign we see joy and unfettered praise

but we also see English and anger and

confusion and fear

you could say we see our own lives our

own hearts on display in the Psalms

so as you hear this Psalm read today

think about that think about your own

life

what thoughts dreams fears occupy your

heart and mind right now

what brings you Joy or you know what's

troubling you even

what is it that you're unsure of

consider all this consider this and and

listen to the word of God

because we believe that God speaks to us

through his word the bible

let me pray for us as we begin

holy God we we thank you that we can

gather today for worship and to hear

from your word

some of us have joyful Hearts some of us

feel great and some of us are heavily

having a hard time right now

money

help us Lord today to remember you are a

God that has peace

for us

so however we feel today

we pray

that you would come and meet us where we

are that you would encourage Us in these

circumstances

in your holy name amen

Amen Let me give you a little bit of

background to the psalm before we we

look at it okay A little bit of

background

um

[Music]

the last couple of weeks if you want to

go back and listen we've read through

psalms 76 and 77 based on somebody

and those psalms and this psalm are

attributed to a psalmist named asaph

as these Psalms have the same author the

same writer

we would do well to look at some common

themes running throughout

remember Psalms are songs

yo humans like you like me pouring their

hearts out in lyrical form

foreign

songs about God's goodness his presence

God's power

thankfulness unto God God's Deliverance

also songs of of questioning and

petition and crying out to God

if you've opened your Bible already you

can see that Psalm 78 is very very long

and so we're not going to read all of it

tonight

I'd love to but it's very long

so you have homework okay

tonight or sometime this week I want you

to read all of Psalm 78.

so homework homework for everybody okay

but what we'll do we're going to read

through portions of it and we'll

understand we'll see an overarching me

meaning and we'll see what truths we can

glean from it

and I think for for time's sake

um each section uh I will read and we'll

read English and we have the Thai also

thank you

this is the word of God

Psalm 78

verses one through four

a math School of asaph

give ear o my people to my teaching

incline your ears to the words of my

mouth

I will open my mouth in a parable

I will utter dark sayings from of old

things that we have heard and known

that our fathers have told us

we will not hide them from their

children

but tell them to the coming Generation

The Glorious Deeds of the Lord and his

might and the Wonders that he has done

he established a testimony in Jacob

and appointed a law in Israel which he

commanded our fathers to teach their

that the Next Generation might know them

the children yet Unborn

and arise and tell them to their

so that they should set their hope in

God and not forget the works of God but

keep his Commandments

and that they should not be like their

fathers a stubborn and rebellious

generation a generation whose heart was

not steadfast whose Spirit was not

faithful to God

the overarching theme of this Psalm is

laid out in these first few verses

is calling out to get the attention of

the readers and

what is his message

listen

and know

and remember what God has done

set your hope in God

tell of God's wondrous Deeds

tell the story to each other tell the

story to the coming Generations

in verse 1 Asif starts this Psalm with a

strong word

May

what black God they Putin

they say content wrong

give ear o my people saying listen

listen to me listen to my teaching

and he continues essentially stating I'm

going to be sharing a teaching from of

old but it's a truth it's a message that

we've heard and we know

this is what our fathers have taught us

so so why the earnest this why the sense

of urgency

why the concern

because the people have forgotten

we are prone to forget we're prone to

forget and wander away from God

and the rest of this song it details an

ongoing pattern

and we'll see it

God displays his goodness and power he

works on behalf of the people of Israel

and they turn to God in Repentance Faith

worship

and they forget then they forget and

they wander away they turn away

but there's a consistent thread that

runs through this cycle and that is the

threat of God's mercy and his

faithfulness

some years ago I was reading this

article and was fascinated by this it's

it was about a group of Volunteers in

Japan known as denshosa

these citizens they spent time with

survivors of the atomic bombs that were

dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki

meaning

they spent time getting to know them and

listening and learning the details of

their stories

they became memory Keepers and they're

prepared to recount these stories to

Future Generations by

as the memories of these survivors fade

and as many of them near the end of

their lives their stories the details of

their experiences have been internalized

by another

and you know I thought um

that could be done with video that could

be done with with written word right

but they've had someone listen sit and

listen with them and and hear their

story ready to tell it

these memory keepers

so I was reminded of this obviously as I

Was preparing uh to speak on Psalm 78.

this Psalm is is calling for Israel to

remember the goodness of God

don't forget what he has done for you

tell the wondrous things that God has

done

tell them to the coming Generations

in fact verse 5

alludes to that very thing alludes to

some law or commandment or statue or

decree that was in place it was part of

judaic practice

you know families fathers families

teaching their children

and we see this beautiful

multi-generational blessing

families teaching their children and

their children teaching their children

and so on and on and on

look like

so great City how does this encourage

and challenge us

we just finished a series before this on

the church

and perhaps one of the most glorious

aspects of a local Gathering of

Believers is this to know our Collective

stories in Jesus Christ

and to share those stories with one

another and with our city

listen this way

to be Memory keepers of what God has

done and to share with his generation

with this generation and the Next

Generation

to remember and to not forget and to

help one another remember and not forget

sometimes we need to hear another

believer

remind us of truths we may easily forget

it

sometimes we need someone else to come

alongside us when we feel weak we feel

broke

this is what it means to live in gospel

Community to see Jesus and work in our

hearts and in the lives of those around

us

so what happens what happens when we

forget

in Psalm 78 reading on

let me read this

the aphromites

armed with the bow turned back on the

day of battle

they did not keep God's covenant but

refused to walk

according to his law they forgot his

works and the Wonders that he had shown

them

in the sight of their fathers he

performed wonders in the land of Egypt

in the fields of his own

he divided the sea he let them pass

through it and made the waters stand

like a heap

in the daytime he led them with a cloud

and all the night with a fiery light

he split their Ox in the wilderness and

gave them drink abundantly as from the

deep

he made streams come out of the Rock

and caused

Waters to flow down like Rivers

Asif

details how this tribe of Israel the

ephraimites they turned away

they did not keep God's covenant they

forgot God's works and wonders

and Asif makes this list here he says

you know God parted the sea god LED you

Faithfully by day and by night and

you've forgotten

God gave them water in the desert

he gave them water for their thirst and

they'd forgotten

they've forgotten in spite of God's love

for them his protection his provision

for them

yet they still sinned more against him

rebelling against the most high in the

desert they tested God in their heart by

demanding the food they craved verse 19

they spoke against God

saying can God spread a table in the

wilderness

he struck the rock so water gushed out

and streams overflowed can he also give

bread or provide meat for his people

therefore when the Lord heard he was

full of Wrath

a fire was kindled against Jacob his

anger Rose against Israel because they

did not believe in God and they did not

trust his saving power

yet he commanded the skies above

and open the doors of Heaven

and he rained down on them Manna to eat

and gave them the grain of Heaven

do you see

do you see the patience and mercy of God

here

I don't know if it stood out to you as

we read this but you know verses 19 and

20 they're an outright mocking of God

you know sure you gave us water we see

it we drink it we're Satisfied by it but

can you give us food too can you do that

do you see the the mockery of of God in

that

name my

and the psalm then details the severity

of God's righteous

judgment

we see that he does graciously provide

food but some of the people are punished

for their outright sin towards God is

in verse 30 we read this

but before they had satisfied their

craving while the food was still in

their mouths the anger of God Rose

against them

and he killed the strongest of them

and laid low the young men of Israel

in spite of all this in spite of all of

this they still sinned despite his

wonders they did not believe

so he made their days vanish like a

breath

and their years in Terror

when he killed them

they sought him

they repented and sought God earnestly

they remembered that God was their Rock

the most high God their redeemer

but they flattered him with their mouths

they lied to him with their tongues

their heart was not steadfast toward him

they were not faithful to his Covenant

these verses are hard to read

it's hard to understand the mercy and

love of God in the midst of God's

righteous judgment towards the people

you might have a question you might say

how can we reconcile God's goodness his

love and this kind of judgment

wrote this in his book The reason for

God it's a very long quote but I think

if we take some time with this it's very

helpful

you see what the reason for God

and

I would like for you to translate this

so we'll spend some time with this yeah

today many of the Skeptics I talked to

say as I once did they can't believe in

the god of the Bible

who punishes and judges people because

they believe in a god of love

I now ask what makes them think God is

love

can they look at life in the world today

and say this proves that the god of the

world is a god of love

can they look at history and say this

all shows that the god of history is a

god of love

can they look at the religious texts of

the world and conclude that God is a god

of love

by no means is that the dominant ruling

attribute of God as understood in any of

the major faiths

I must conclude

that the source of the idea that God is

love is the Bible

itself

and the Bible tells us that the god of

is also a god of judgment

who will put all things in the world to

rights in the end

the belief in a god of pure love who

accepts everyone and judges no one is a

powerful Act of Faith

not only is there no evidence for it in

the natural order

but there is almost no historical

religious textual support for it

outside of Christianity

the more one looks at it

the less Justified it appears

conditions

so we read of God's righteous judgment

over the people but we also see his

mercy and patience displayed on

in verse 38 we read this yet he being

compassionate

atoned for their iniquity

and did not destroy them

he restrained his anger often and did

not stir up all his Wrath

he remembered that they were but flesh

a wind that passes and comes not again

how often they rebelled against him in

the wilderness and grieved him in the

desert they tested God again and again

and provoked the Holy One of Israel they

did not remember his power

or the day when he redeemed them from

the foe when he performed all his signs

in Egypt and his Marvels in the field of

Zone

God remembering the weakness

of the people the Frailty of the people

oh

God understanding our weakness our

Frailty

and we see this repetitive pattern again

in verse 41 the people testing God

taunting God provoking God

foreign you know you read the Bible and

you think did they ever learn

Ed

what

and then we ask ourselves like will will

we ever learn Ed

so we see the Rebellion against God it

continues the idolatry persists can

bro

yeah they tested and rebelled against

the most high god did not keep his

testimonies but turned away and acted

treacherously like their fathers they

twisted like a deceitful bow they

provoked him to anger with their high

places they moved him to jealousy with

their idols

as we near the end of the psalm

we read about God working to restore and

to lead the people

there are consequences yes sin can have

difficult ongoing consequences

but God is merciful and loving in the

midst of his righteous Justice

he is present with us and is faithful to

lead us as we follow him

God's ultimate Mercy was demonstrated

through Jesus

this is an essential and vital Christian

truth and you could think he's

a Christian that Jesus Took up took on

our sin and died for us

and we experience the mercy of God

through the sacrificial death of Jesus

so

what do we make of all this what do we

think about all these things

I don't know if you noticed but at the

beginning of this Psalm it's listed as

what's called a mascul um

some resources describe a mascul as a

meditative song

a song that would be sung in communal

settings yes but also a text that one

would sit with

that they would meditate on that they

would think over and consider more

deeply

playing

so how do we do that very thing today

how do you do this when you do your

homework

how do we walk away from Gathering today

with a different or deeper understanding

of who God is and God's truth

the psalm the song ends like this

he built his Sanctuary like the High

Heavens like the Earth which he has

founded forever he chose David his

servant and took him from the sheepfolds

from following the nursing use

and he brought him to Shepherd

Jacob His People Israel his inheritance

with upright heart he shepherded them

and guided them with his skillful hand

what is your response to this what is

your response to this psalm

s like

the call of this Psalm is for all of us

our hearts struggle with the same

ongoing cycle of knowing and forgetting

of following and turning away of

professing and being tempted towards

unbelief

our honest prayer in all of this can be

help us Lord Jesus help us

be reminded of God's work in your heart

is

tell of his Works to your heart

remember what he has done

and recount retell these things to

others

remember his love for you and follow him

hello

and we are so grateful a great City

sometimes people come and they are not

sure what they believe about God about

Jesus about Christianity

and maybe this Psalm maybe it gives you

questions real questions about all of

this is

and my prayer for you is that that you

would consider this ancient song This

ancient text

s

does it speak to your heart in any way

does it resonate with your soul

could there really be a God and a God

that loves you

a God that took on Humanity and came to

this earth as Jesus who lives Among Us

and can sympathize with us

and would you heed the words that asaph

wrote to set your hope in God

ERS here in fact any of the the members

of gray City would love to talk to you

and hear your questions

we would be honored to talk with you

about these things and to hear what you

really think

so when closing friends let us remember

what God has done

things

our hope is in him

let us tell the story

let's pray hello

God we come to you with that prayer

today help us help us

Israel saw Many Wonders they saw amazing

things that they could not deny and yet

they

turn from you and we think I would never

do that and yet we have that in US

so we need you

we need you to lead us and to help us

and to protect us to give us faith and

to grow our faith

in you

when we're tempted to turn away or to be

our own Gods

to walk in our own way would you remind

us that you love us

that you have given yourself for us

and you want to lead us

help us Lord Jesus to follow you

we ask and pray

in your holy
