right well hello everybody hope your

weeks have been well

we are now in August

which for many people means that it is

back to school season

we're approaching the end of summer and

a lot of us

teachers professors students a lot of us

are returning to school or to University

and actually

here with our sermon series as well

we're going to be returning to something

that we begin

at around this time last year

so for the next three weeks we're going

to be continuing our series that we

began last year I'm looking at the book

of Ephesians

which means for the next three weeks

you're stuck with me

we've been going through it very slowly

last year we looked at chapter one and a

little bit of chapter two

who remembers what we've covered so far

ends up

it's only been a year so let's all right

let's let's recap this together

most of us myself included don't

remember what we had for breakfast the

day before so it's completely

understandable

so let's summarize briefly

we said last year that Ephesians is the

Mahana Khan Tower

of Paul's letters

the Mahana Khan Tower is one of the

largest buildings in Thailand

it's a place where you can get

one of the most breathtaking views of

the city

it Towers above every other building in

Bangkok

and if you look out

you'll see the vast array of Office

Buildings

highways and trains

in the background you'll see the

Japanese River

and so from the Mahana Khan Tower you

basically see it all it's a bird's eye

view of Bangkok

similarly

Ephesians is the Mahana Khan Tower of

Paul's litters

because it offers us a breathtaking View

of the entire landscape

it touches on many of the Great themes

of the Bible

God the Father

the world Jesus the church salvation

Behavior

marriage and family spiritual warfare

it's all there it's all there in

Ephesians

and what Ephesians is doing is it's

refusing to let us look at things only

from the human point of view

so as humans we have all sorts of

assumptions that make us the center of

the universe

which is why when we travel and interact

with people who are different to us

people from different cultures people

from different backgrounds when we do

this we become more thoughtful

because we realize that our way of doing

things is not the only way it's just one

way

but until we interact with people who

aren't like us we assume that our way of

doing things is the right way that it's

the only way

and we do the same thing with God as

well

we struggle oftentimes because we insist

on understanding things from our point

of view

that's why our lives are falling apart

or if we feel like God is being cruel to

us or unfair to us or if our lives

aren't making any sense

we're ready to say God you don't know

what you're doing

it's our human centeredness

and so Ephesians continually challenges

our human centered way of looking at

things

Ephesians gives us the big picture gives

us God's point of view

and so far in chapters one and two

we've seen that one to be a Christian

means to be United with Christ

and that in Christ we've been given

every spiritual blessing

we've also seen that

being a Christian following Jesus means

to know and experience the incomparable

power God has given us to live

we've seen that this power is a gift

that's God's grace

and that God's grace is a life-changing

power that transforms us from the inside

out

in the end of chapter one

Paul prays that the Ephesians would know

the incomparably great power

for us who believe

and in that he's saying one of the main

problems that we have is that we don't

know the power of God we don't know we

have

and then in chapter 2

Paul shows us evidence of that power

in the first 10 verses that we covered

last year

we see how God's power is able to bring

dead people people dead in sin bring

them to life

we've seen that God's spirit can come

into our hearts and remake us from the

bottom up

and in our section for today verses 11

to 22

Paul shows us more of what God's power

looks like in our lives

so let's read Ephesians chapter 2 verses

11 to 22.

therefore remember that formerly you who

are Gentiles by birth and called

uncircumcised by those who call

themselves The circumcision

which is done in the body by human heads

remember that at a time you were

separate from Christ excluded from

citizenship in Israel and foreigners to

the covenants of the promise

without hope and without God in the

world

but now in Christ Jesus you who were

once far away have been brought nearby

the blood of Christ

for he himself is our peace who has made

the two groups one and has destroyed the

barrier the dividing wall of hostility

by setting aside in his flesh the law

with its commands and regulations

his purpose was to create in himself one

new Humanity out of the two

thus making peace

and in one body to reconcile both of

them to God through the cross

by which he put to death their hostility

he came and preached peace to you who

were far away and peace to those who

were near

for through him we both have access to

the father by one spirit

consequently you are no longer

foreigners and strangers but fellow

citizens with God's people and also

members of his household

built on the foundation of the Apostles

and Prophets with Christ Jesus himself

as the Chief Cornerstone

in him the whole building is joined

together and Rises to become a holy

Temple in the Lord

and in him you too are being built

together to become a dwelling in which

God Lives by his spirit

this is God's word

so in one word

our section

for today shows us

let's add another sign of God's power is

the church

see it says he himself is our peace

who has made the two groups one

and create in himself one new Humanity

out of the two thus making peace

in other words

God's power is able to take two groups

two people who otherwise would never be

able to live together

and make them one in Christ

this is what this section is about

it's about the beauty of the church

now

this might not initially excite us as

much

because we might not feel like this is

relevant

we may read through this section and go

ah yes yes the church this sounds very

nice but I want to know more about how

God can help me what God can do in my

life I'm not as interested in the church

in fact I believe you can be a Christian

and not have to go to church

and if we if we think like that we miss

the beauty that's being communicated in

this section

if we grasp of what is being

communicated here

we might instead say yes I want that so

much I want Jesus in my life I want to

be part of a new community I want to be

part of the church I want to bring it

about

we'll see in this passage that the

church is not just a place to gather on

Sundays to sing

it is a place

where God is recreating Not only new

people

but a new Society

people who could never get along now get

along in the church

people who would never build each other

up now do so in the church

so in this section Paul is essentially

saying

if you understand the cross

any two people should be able to get

along

and if two people who believe aren't

getting along

you're not thinking about the cross

and you aren't understanding it

again if you understand the cross

so Paul uses a case study

he's talking about the Jews and the

Gentiles here two different groups of

Paul himself was a Jew

and he is ministering to gentiles

now I don't think any of us in this room

are Jewish correct me if I'm wrong so

that makes all of us in this room

gentiles

and so we see that

the Jews and the Gentiles exist in a

state of hostility

it says in verse 14 the dividing wall of

hostility

hostility essentially means hate

so in short the Jews and gentiles

have a relationship characterized by

hatred they hate each other

so the question becomes okay why do the

Jews and Gentiles hate each other

what has caused this

we see the answer in verse 15 it is what

God has to deal with in order to bring

peace it's the law with its commands and

regulations

that's the thing that

has to be set aside by God

in order to deal with the hatred

so what's the law

what does he mean here well the law is

found in the Old Testament it's the

Mosaic law

all the rules and regulations Not Just

the Ten Commandments but includes the

regulations about how to live a holy

life

the Gentiles did not have the law

but the Jews were given the law

as a gift from God

and the purpose of the law was for the

Israelites to show the rest of the world

what it meant to belong to God

so ultimately the law was given to be a

blessing to the world

but here

we see that it ironically becomes the

reason for why there was hatred between

the Jews and the Gentiles

the Jews began to despise the Gentiles

because they didn't have the law

and so they lived like pagans they lived

very immoral lives

and so the Gentiles felt despised and so

began to despise the Jews in return

it's fairly straightforward to

understand if somebody doesn't like us

we tend to not like them as well

so this is the context in which Paul is

writing

but what he's addressing is a

fundamental human issue

that issue is

that when God gives us good gifts in

Paul's case the law

in our case talents strengths

when God gives us good gifts

the human heart takes these good gifts

and looks at everyone who doesn't have

what we have and we compare

in the end it causes us to look down on

people and despise them

the good gift becomes the basis for

now this is true for individuals

it's true for groups of people

different ethnicities different

political ideologies different religions

now Tim Keller observes that the way we

construct our identity and self-worth is

that we take what is good about us or

unique about us we take that

and we lift it up

and then we use it as a lens through

which we look at everyone else

so in other words we judge people by

what we value

we use it to look down on others so

example if you're a really good piano

player

you may walk into a room of musicians

and feel pretty good about yourself

you may feel confident

but as soon as you meet another piano

player or group of piano players who are

better than you your confidence

disappears you may even start to think

who even am I I shouldn't be here

see it's it's comparison or another

example you may be a person of high

status

that is you may have a decent amount of

money or have a high position in your

workplace

and that might mean that

you have a certain expectation about how

people should treat us treat yourself

since high status

so perhaps

we're less polite to people who we

perceive to be a lower status

and then when we meet people who outrank

us we're extremely polite trying to get

on their good side see that's that's

also comparison

and that's how we get our identity

so the perfect place where

the Bible expresses this is the

Pharisees Prayer in Luke 18. the

Pharisee stands by himself and praise

God I thank you I'm not like other

thank you Lord I'm not a robber not an

evil doer adulterer or even like this

tax collector over here I fast twice a

week and give a tenth of all I get

did you hear the story about a man

Shipwrecked on an island

he was the only one on that island

he was Shipwrecked for about a year

when they finally found him they found

that he built two little churches

they asked him why do you have two

little churches you're the only one here

he responded oh yes

you always have to have two churches One

Church to go to the other one to stay

away from

the point here is that

there is something in our hearts that

takes what is good about us we lift it

up

so that we can feel good about ourselves

and then we compare ourselves to other

people and that's how we get ourselves

worth and our identity

and the Bible calls this

self-righteousness

and this is the basis for all the

fighting that we have in the world

there is no bigger problem in the world

than a lack of peace

we're always fighting

always there's ethnic hostility

we see racism and Prejudice in our own

country against Lao against Myanmar

against Indians against refugees

there's gender hostility there's

hostility between the generations

there's political hostility where each

side is severely criticizing the other

not in terms of the ideas but insulting

people who don't agree with us

all we're doing when we do this is we're

killing ourselves

why why do we do this

well the Bible says that

it is because of Pride that causes us to

look down on people

who don't have what we have

Jeremiah 9 says let not the wise boast

of their wisdom

or the strong boast of their strength or

the rich boast of their riches what does

that mean

when we're boasting in something

we're saying that's what makes me count

that is what gives me significance

that's what makes me madder

the natural tendency of our hearts is to

rejoice in those things that make us

better than other people and when we do

that

the peace is gone

the more capable we are

the more self-worth that we have apart

from Jesus Christ the harder it is for

us to get along with people

because we boast in what we have

and you know what we can do this about

anything and everything

we can be prideful in our Theology and

look down on people who don't have

correct theology

plenty of people look down at our

charismatic brothers and sisters

plenty of people in all sorts of

denominations think we have it right we

have the correct Theology and you don't

and we're so glad we're not like you

and you know what

if we've ever had the thought while

talking to our non-Christian friends

if we've ever been frustrated with them

and had the thought well why don't you

just believe

how can you not see that the Bible is

true why are you not getting it

when we think that we're actually being

prideful in what we've been given

because the Bible is a gift but when we

use it to look down on people who don't

believe what we believe we're taking

God's good gift and using it as a basis

to despise other people

and this is the problem this is the

problem Paul is pointing out we despise

one another through our pride

and we can do nothing about it

we're trying but we can't do anything

about it

we're not close to peace at all

on the surface it might look like we are

we just restrain ourselves

but we're not close to peace

peace in the family

peace between ethnicities

peace between the genders

peace between individuals peace between

different political groups and

ideologies

the Bible tells us that

the only way to get peace is through the

cross

it says

in one body

to reconcile them both of them to the

Cross both of them two got through the

Cross by which he put to death

their hostility so the next question

becomes well okay how does the cross do

this

well one of the things the cross does

is that it shows us that we're all

sinners

see the attitude that causes War

and murders every day

the attitude that causes all sorts of

conflicts

between individuals that causes all

sorts of hurt and lack of peace that

attitude is expressed in the sentence

it's not my fault

I don't want this I want peace it's not

my fault I am not the problem that

person is the problem but I want peace

as long as we say this as long as we

believe this there's no peace

there is no way that there will be any

peace until we all see that we are to

blame

so the cross of Jesus Christ if we grasp

what it means it's actually very very

insulting

Jesus Christ the son of God voluntarily

willingly died on the cross so that we

could be saved what does that mean

well every other religion says that

effort is enough

if you follow all the teachings if you

meditate if you do good works if you

tambun

if you be a good person and don't hurt

other people

that that's enough you can do it

and what the Bible says is no you can't

none of us can the Bible says we're so

bad we failed so much in so many ways

that only the death of God Will Save Us

we're so bad off that only the death of

God on the cross will save us how

insulting is that

that means that there is absolutely

nothing that we can do to help ourselves

nothing at all

the message of the Cross if we

understand it correctly is very

there was an author

his name was G.K Chesterton chesterson

he was asked the question what is the

main problem in the world today

a lot of writers were asked this

question

and they were asked this question

because they were all meant to publish a

piece answering

that question explaining the main

problems of the world so they asked UK

Chesterton Chesterton hard name to

pronounce

um he refused to write an article

all he said was

the main problem with the universe is me

it's a radically Biblical answer it's

the only way to peace

he's absolutely right

the main problem in this world is me

the real problem is everyone is like me

but I am the only one

I have any control over I am selfish

self-centered want things to revolve

around me I control my selfishness so

that we can get along but I am deeply

selfish the problem is I don't love God

with all my heart soul strength and mind

and I don't love my neighbor as myself I

don't even treat people how I'd like to

be treated I'm a sinner

this is what the cross tells us

and this destroys all grounds for

comparison that we have

we can't construct our identity by

comparing because in the end we're all

equal we're all equal

in verse 14 Paul says that there is a

dividing wall between Jew and Gentile

and he's right

there was an actual literal wall in the

temple

because of all the clean laws and the

ceremonies of the Jews they worship

closer to God

and the Gentiles were on the other side

of the wall so they worshiped further

away in the court of gentiles

now the gospel the cross the gospel

destroys the dividing wall look at verse

17.

are far away

and peace to those who were near

well question is who's far who's near

well the Gentiles were far from God

because they didn't have the Bible they

didn't have the law they lived immoral

lives their lives were a mess

and so in verses here it is in verses 11

to 13 Paul tells them and he tells us to

to remember at a time remember because

we are Gentiles we were separate from

Christ excluded from citizenship in

Israel foreigners to the covenants of

Promise without hope without God in the

if you're a Christian today in this room

this is our former life this is

who we once were

without God

without hope

what does that mean

God has brought us near we have hope now

it's a it's an absolute miracle that

there's so much hope in the fact that we

have been reconciled to God let that

sink in

to be a Christian does not mean to

follow religious rules

to be a Christian means

once you place your trust in Jesus

now you have hope

so the Gentiles which is most of us if

not all of us here we're far off

Gentiles or far off and now the Jews

they were near

they had the Bible

they had the law of God they had prayer

what's radical

is that the Bible says both of them

needed to be reconciled to God

both of them needed peace both of them

needed to be saved

this is one of the most radical things

the gospel can tell human beings

until we hear the gospel

we do divide the world

We compare

we see some people we immediately don't

like them people of different political

viewpoints people who have less money

than us or more money than us people of

different ethnicities people who have

different behaviors attitudes even

people from different schools will see

someone who immediately don't like them

the gospel destroys that the gospel

absolutely destroys that because the

gospel says look at those people living

immoral lives they're far away from God

they're rejecting God but look at the

people who are close who are living good

Lives who say because of this God you

have to bless me I'm a really good

person

so two groups of people one disobeying

God's law the other obeying God's law

but both of them doing it

self-centeredly and arrogantly both of

them are being their own Savior and Lord

ultimately both of them need to be saved

listen to this this is really important

everybody everybody from a mafia Hitman

to a prostitute to someone who goes to

church every week to the pastor of a

church everybody we are all sinners

we're all on the same level

when we become a Christian we don't just

repent of our sins we don't repent of

our bad things only we also repent of

our righteousness all the things that we

thought made us good we repent of that

as well have we

we're all equal before God

we all need to be saved

we all stand equally before God as

recipients of his grace if we ask for it

as well

see the gospel destroys all comparisons

see both of those both those who are

near to God and far from God both of

them need to be reconciled both of them

need to be rescued isn't this offensive

if we believe we are wicked Sinners and

the only hope we have is to rest in

Jesus Christ who died for us does that

offend any of us here

when we believe the gospel

we cannot look at anyone else who is

different to us and say we're better

than them absolutely not we can no

longer compare we cannot look at people

of lower classes or higher classes and

say I'm better than them we can't look

at people with different Theology and

say I'm better than them

we can look at people with different

political views and say I'm better than

them

do we believe this

the only reason we're able to enjoy

anything today is by the mercy of God

and this this is the only way to peace

it's the cross

so one thing that the cross shows us is

that it is our fault

but what's more the cross also shows us

that everyone else everyone else that

Jesus Christ has died so that everyone

can come into Jesus's Church

so the cross shows us God's love for

people who are not like us at all

the cross makes us all equal

you know what else the cross shows you

that you're loved

cross shows us that we're all equal

we're all Sinners and the cross shows us

that we're loved so loved that God

himself was willing to come down and die

for us

to die so that we could be reconciled to

him what does that say about how

valuable you are to him what does that

say about how he sees you

the cross shows us how deeply love we

are that God himself was willing to die

if we give our lives to Jesus we're now

accepted in him the lord of the universe

not only forgives us but Delights in US

sees us as righteous and perfect in

Christ

and if we let it this Foundation is so

powerful

that it goes to the very heart of our

lives and it completely changes the way

we view ourselves

our identity is changed it's

restructured we cannot compare ourselves

anymore

we can we will be able to look at every

person in the world and not look down on

and we can also look at our Christian

brothers and sisters regardless of who

they are

what they do regardless of what they

believe about politics regardless of

where they're from we can look at them

and love them

there's a bond now

there's a bond that runs deeper than

anything else and that bond is all of us

have died in Jesus and all of us have

been raised in Jesus as well

God is recreating the human race as it

ought to be and he's doing that inside

the church amongst those who are in

question is how does he do this

that's where we go to verse 16 in one

body to reconcile both of them through

the Cross by which he put to death their

on the cross and God slew the hatred

God God slew the hostility

what happened on the cross

Jesus Christ voluntarily willingly took

the place of sin of the inhumanity of

human beings really we should be

destroyed because of us because of our

hostility we have ruined the world

God should slay us for our hostility but

instead God slew the hostility

what does that mean it means on the

cross Jesus Christ took the punishment

we deserve he took it

and he just and that destroyed the

penalty for the hostility that we

deserve

it makes sense doesn't it because we've

been hostile to each other God should be

hostile to us

because we've destroyed each other God

should destroy us but Jesus took it and

he did this this is what changes it he

took it voluntarily he wasn't like oh

man I gotta go forgive them I gotta go

die for them no

he did this voluntarily

it was his joy to do this

he went to the cross that we could be

reconciled to God but not only that that

we could be reconciled to one another as

think about how much higher Jesus is

than we are if we look at it in terms of

the lens through the world Jesus much

more higher status Jesus Is God we're

just humans

yet he willingly went to the Cross to

Die For Humanity that you could say not

on the same level as God

and yet Jesus wasn't ashamed of us

he loved us and he loves us today

when the cross comes into the middle of

our lives

there will be no one around us that we

will be ashamed of either it doesn't

matter who they are

if we remember the cross this is the

only way

to live that peace with people

if we can't get along with another

Christian if we're staying bitter

towards someone the only way we can stay

bitter towards someone is if we feel

that we're Superior to them

if we feel like we're not capable of

doing what they're doing I would never

do that that's the root of bitterness

we can be mad at someone

but we don't stay bitter

and if we do become bitter

we're forgetting the gospel

if we find ourselves looking down on

someone and being bitter we're

forgetting

that what makes us who we are is the

cross it's the gospel

the Bible says if we remember the gospel

that we're a sinner and and that we're

deeply loved

we don't have to be afraid of being

rejected

if we remember the gospel and if we live

by the gospel we will become a new

humanity and people who never ever ever

could have gotten along otherwise will

be able to get along in the church

the community of God's redeemed people

Paul says that this this is an Evidence

of God's power at work

and if we go up to people who don't

believe and we try to share Jesus with

but we can't show them this we can't

show them unity in the church

in the community of God's people

if we can't show them this we might as

well not share

because this this the church is an

Evidence of God's power

God bringing people together

destroying the dividing wall of

creating a new Humanity

making peace through the cross

reconciling

us all to one another

and to himself if God can reconcile us

to himself there is absolutely no

relationship that cannot be reconciled

it may take time it may take a lot of

hard work

but there is hope

remember the gospel

we'll see this happen more and more

close with the words of Paul but now in

Christ Jesus

you who are once far away

have been brought near by the blood of

this is the gospel the blood of Christ

has brought us near

and through the gospel

we can be agents of God's peace and

Reconciliation

let's pray

Lord Jesus we thank you for your word

Lord we thank you for the wonderful gift

that we have we admit and confess that

it's it's ridiculously hard to do a Lord

and there's no way that we could do this

or that we could have the humility to

admit when we're wrong

to have the security to reach out and be

vulnerable not not afraid of being

Lord these things are hard without you

they're impossible but we thank you Lord

that through the

secure love that we have in you that we

can do these things and not be afraid we

pray that through you Holy Spirit you

would meet us today

Lord in the ways that we need to be met

by you we thank you that you know us

better than we know ourselves and we

thank you that you will never give up on

us Lord we thank you that

Lord that you are using your church we

pray that it would be so in Jesus name

amen
