right well

hope your weeks have been well we're in

our second week of our mini series in

Ephesians

we began this Series last year went

through two chapters

we're doing two more chapters this year

so

Visions here we go Ephesians is a book

that tells us not what we must do to be

saved but it tells us what God has done

in order to save us

Ephesians as we've said over the past

well last week Ephesians gives us God's

big picture

teaches us to look at life from God's

perspective

there was a woman some years ago who

found out later in life that she had

inherited a large amount of money

she believed it

but she continued to live as she had

been living before

she eventually died a few years later

having done absolutely nothing with the

money

she didn't give it to anyone

she didn't use it for herself

she was rich

but she lived like it made no difference

in her life

what she really had

made no difference in her life

Ephesians shows us that as Christians we

are rich

in chapter one we learned that God has

given us every spiritual blessing in

Christ

we saw that Paul says our main problem

as Christians is that we don't know what

we have

we have the power of God

the same power that Rose Christ from the

dead

we have that but we don't know it

so Paul prays in chapter one he says the

eyes of your heart will be enlightened

so that we may know the hope to which he

has called us

and then in Chapter 2 Paul tells us that

God has given us the incomparable Riches

of his grace

in our section for today at chapter

three

Paul says his duty is to preach the

boundless Riches of Christ

we are rich

do you know what you have in Christ

Theologian NT Wright says

being a Christian is meant to consist of

going from room to room in the king's

Palace

relishing the beauty and Splendor of it

all

this is what we have

do we know this

we're in chapter three today

verses 1 to 13 and I'll read to us the

text

for this reason I Paul

the prisoner of Christ Jesus for the

sake of you Gentiles surely you have

heard about the administration of God's

grace that was given to me for you that

is the mystery made known to me by

Revelation as I have already written

briefly

in reading this then you will be able to

understand my insight into the mystery

of Christ

which was not made known to people in

other Generations as it has now been

revealed by the spirit to God's Holy

Apostles and Prophets

this mystery is that through the gospel

the Gentiles are heirs together with

Israel members together of one body

share us together in the promise in

Christ Jesus

I became a servant of this gospel by the

gift of God's grace given me through the

working of his power although I am less

than the least of all the Lord's people

this Grace was given to me to preach to

the Gentiles the boundless Riches of

and to make plain to everyone the

administration of this mystery which for

ages past was kept hidden in God who

created all things

his intent was that now through the

church the manifold wisdom of God should

be made known to the rulers and

authorities in the Heavenly Realms

according to his eternal purpose that he

accomplished in Christ Jesus our lord

in him and through faith in him we may

approach god with freedom and confidence

I ask you therefore

not to be discouraged because of my

sufferings for you

which are your glory

this is the word of God

this section of Ephesians is incredibly

interesting

do you notice the dash right in the

first verse

Paul says for this reason I Paul the

prisoner of Christ Jesus for the sake of

you gentiles

and then he launches into a new idea

altogether

he doesn't finish the thought

he gets back to his main thought in

verse 14. because there again he says

for this reason

so what he was about to say in verse 1

he actually says in verse 14.

so that brings up the question

what is Paul doing in verses 2 to 13.

it seems like Paul gets sidetracked he

goes on a detour

and so we ask why does Paul get

sidetracked

well Paul we know that Paul is a pastor

and you said and we know that Paul

doesn't just say things to waste space

everything he writes has intention and

purpose

so even when he gets sidetracked he gets

sidetracked for a reason

he begins with for this reason I Paul

the prisoner of Jesus Christ for the

sake of you gentiles

for what reason for this reason for what

reason well

chapter two is what he refers to when he

says for this reason

he refers to the fact that as we talked

about last week Jesus Christ in the

gospel unite diverse kinds of people who

would otherwise never get along

and that the gospel destroys divisions

that cannot be destroyed any other way

that is in Christ God is creating a new

Society a new Humanity

that's the reason that's why he says for

this reason

so he starts off by saying for this

reason and then all of a sudden he

thinks hold on a second

I need to say something else here

and then we see that the reason he gets

sidetracked in verse 13.

we see the reason

verse 13 he says I ask you therefore not

to be discouraged because of my

sufferings for you which are your glory

everything in verses 2 to 12 has to be

understood in light of this

the end purpose for why Paul says what

he says

is to encourage his friends I ask you

therefore not to be discouraged

because of my sufferings for you which

are your glory

he didn't want them to be discouraged

over the fact that he was in prison

so he says to himself hold on

I need to make sure these people aren't

discouraged over my situation

I better make sure they're not

discouraged

and so we have verses 2 to 12. he wants

to encourage his friends he wants to

encourage his readers

so what Paul shows us here

is how to deal with discouragement

he knows that they're discouraged

because Paul they're a great teacher

who taught and modeled for them the life

of Faith Paul who's in prison

and so he says let me tell you a few

things but it's all for the sake of

encouragement

he has a purpose in mind he wants to

encourage

so if we read carefully

we'll see how Paul deals

with his own discouragement

and it'll show us

how to deal with ours

so one of the things that we learn from

here is that one life is hard

and it's not just hard for bad people

but good people too we all suffer huge

disappointments and tragedies and

suffering can shake our faith

so in Matthew 11 John the Baptist he's

in prison he's the one who declared

Jesus to be the Messiah now he's in

prison

and in prison he's about to be executed

he sends his disciples to Jesus to ask

him are you really the Messiah

should we look for another

John the Baptist is filled with doubt

the reason is the reason he's filled

with doubt is because what he's in

he's saying if you're really the Messiah

why would your servant people who follow

you

why would your servant be in prison why

is my life falling apart if you're

really the son of God

Paul calls himself

prisoner of Christ Jesus

and if we think long and hard enough

about what that means

it may very well perplex us it may Annoy

Us

it might even scare us

Paul

a prisoner of Christ

but you know what Paul is dealing with

is something that to different degrees

something that will confront all of us

in other words what Paul is dealing with

is something that we all will deal with

that is

when you seek to obey Jesus Christ

it's not

it's not only that bad things will

happen to you when you follow Jesus

but oftentimes

lots and lots of bad things happen

because you are following Christ

Paul's not in prison because he broke

the law he didn't do anything wrong

he's in prison because he's preaching

it's one thing to say

I'm a Christian I did something wrong so

now I'm in jail

so another thing to say

I'm a Christian and I am in jail because

I'm obeying God

the Bible teaches us and we see from

experience that

the more consistent of a Christian Life

we live

the more we will suffer for Christ

see if you if you refuse to sleep with

this person if you choose to give

a lot of your money away

if you choose to speak up

during a business meeting where you

where you know what's going on it's not

ethical

if you choose to refuse to lie in a

situation where it would actually be

beneficial to you

and to the people around you

if you are consistently obedient to what

the Bible teaches us to do

eventually bad things will happen

to you to me to all of us

and if we have never wrestled with this

it might just be because we aren't

actually living a consistent enough Life

as a Christian

maybe our faith makes a big difference

to us on Sunday

but not on Monday to Saturday

we've never really wrestled with this

maybe we aren't really living how we

ought to be

there will be times when

you and I will have to choose between

two options

one option is the right thing to do

and it will hurt us

the second is what we know we shouldn't

do but it's the more convenient option

and if you are a Christian

there will definitely be times when the

right thing to do

is the one that will cause us to suffer

there's a lot of people if we look

throughout history who have been

rejected by the people around them for

Jesus's sake

there's a lot of people who have lost

jobs for Christ's sake

a lot of people have been put in prison

for Jesus

they have lost friends

they have lost promotions

they've even lost their lives

question is can suffering happen to a

Christian

can suffering happen because we are

trying to be obedient to Jesus

absolutely

yes it can and it does look at Paul a

the Bible shows us life is hard

so how does Paul encourage his friends

who are discouraged because they see

Paul in prison on account of Jesus

so one of the words that comes up most

often in this section is the word

mystery comes up four times at least

so in verses two to three

Paul says his calling is

proclaim the mystery that has now been

revealed

now the way the Bible uses the word

mystery is not how we tend to understand

it

because when we think of Mystery we may

think of Clues detectives something we

need to solve in order to understand

but when the Bible uses the word mystery

it's precisely the opposite

it actually means

it's not something that we need to

discover

but it's something that's been revealed

to us by God

because we would never Discover it on

our own

we would never figure it out

there is absolutely no way we could come

to the conclusion it doesn't make any

sense to us

that's why God has to reveal it to us

that's what mystery means here

see in verse 3 Paul says the mystery

made known to me by revelation

this isn't something that Paul himself

thought up

it was revealed to him by God

and it's something nobody nobody in the

whole world could have thought of

because it goes against everything and

anything

that we would think makes sense

so the natural question is what what is

this mystery

in verse 6 he tells us this mystery

is that through the gospel the Gentiles

are heirs together with Israel members

together of one body share us together

in the promise of Jesus

so that's a pretty complex sentence

let's unpack it first he says through

the gospel

whenever Paul uses the word mystery

oftentimes he's speaking about the

gospel

question is what is what is the gospel

the gospel is not

that if you live a good life

if you obey the law if you are a good

person if you listen to other people

help other people out if you do all

these things then God will bless you and

send you to heaven

that is not the gospel

because that makes too much sense

that's not a mystery that's exactly how

our minds operate

I do this for you so you do this for me

right

I buy you a gift so now it's an unspoken

rule that you have to get me a gift that

is of equal value or a little bit more

I listen to you I'm there for you so you

have to be there for me

I help you out financially so you have

to help me out financially

that's how our minds and our hearts

operate we do this with God as well

I listen to you God live the life that

you want me to live so that you are

pleased and you can send me to heaven

that's not that's not the gospel

the gospel is that God himself came to

Earth in Jesus Christ triumphed over

evil

through weakness and suffering

he gained the victory

through losing

he won everything by giving it all away

the gospel goes against

anything that we would think that's why

it's a mystery

it's not something that we would have

ever thought of

doesn't make any sense

has the audacity of the Gospel hit you

yet

has The Wonder of the Gospel hit you

here's a question

have you ever felt gangtai to God

have you ever felt going to die to God

before

that because of what he's done for you

you need to do something to pay him back

think about this if someone gets us a

gift most of us in this room

will feel

all of us Thai people will feel

will feel obligated to get the other

person a gift back as well

and I would submit that

if we have never felt going to God

then we've been taken God for granted

the weight of what he's done

has not hit us hasn't even hit us yet

the natural state of our hearts

if we grasp at what God has done

if we actually grasp it the natural

state is to be a great day

and to try to repay back God somehow

we need to do something

so initially if we if we actually

understand the magnitude of who God is

and what God has done for us I think we

will be okay

we will feel the need to repay back

repay God back somehow but

if we truly grasp the gospel or drink

tiredness will be completely shattered

because we'll realize that there is

absolutely nothing

we can never do

to repay God for what he's done

we cannot do enough good works Good

Deeds

in order to feel like okay I feel good

enough about myself to receive God's

grace

I've worked up to the point where I can

come to God

when we grasp the gospel all we can

really do is to be overwhelmed by

gratitude by what he's done

and as a response because of what God

has done that's where it starts because

of what God has done

to respond to that we live by faith

you might be a Christian here today

you might be thinking yes I believe the

gospel Jesus died for my sins

but it takes a whole lifetime to

discover the depths of the Gospel it

takes a whole lifetime to actually live

to live by faith it goes against all of

our instincts it's not what we would

think and it takes a whole lifetime to

unlearn the thought patterns that we've

had in order to receive God's grace in

all every aspect of Our Lives

in spite of How It's not what we would

think in spite of how bad we are

we're saved by sheer Grace

the idea that we are saved by grace

makes absolutely no sense to our hearts

so if we live by the first framework

first framework that if I live a good

life and obey God then God will accept

me and bless me

at first that makes sense but it will

eventually crush us

because no one can live up to it

but if we live by the gospel if we live

by faith

that we're saved by sheer Grace no

matter how bad we are no matter what

we've done whether you are a murderer or

a saint

whether you have done something you

think no one can forgive

it does not matter what you've done if

you come to God you will be completely

accepted in him

we are completely accepted in him it

doesn't make sense it's actually

scandalous the grace of God is

scandalous

God has more Mercy for us

than even the most merciful and kindest

person that we can think of

if we live by the gospel

even though it doesn't make sense to us

we will be more and more free

and it will become more and more

wonderful to us

it's a mystery The Mystery of the Gospel

no one could have thought this up

is the gospel a wondrous Miracle to you

does it cause you all

if it is then you never get tired of the

Gospel

you're always fascinated by

we never graduate from the gospel

Tim Keller says the gospel is not the

ABCs of Christianity

but it's the A to Z

so Paul says the mystery is that through

the Gentiles are heiressed together with

share us together in the promise of

Jesus

so we talked about this last week

the gospel tears down all Dividing Walls

Jew and Gentile everything that we use

to divide one another and look down on

one another

the gospel tears down those divisions

and God's creating a new Society a new

Humanity in the church

and here

Paul expands that a little bit further

he continues in verse 10 and 11. and

it's absolutely amazing

so a question what is the ultimate

Eternal purpose of God that he

accomplishes

through Christ what is that

Ephesians chapter 1 verses 8 to 10 tells

us it's actually the theme of the book

God's purpose is to bring together

everything in the world in Jesus Christ

to bring Unity to all things in heaven

and on Earth under Christ

we see the world as it is today

everything's falling apart

our bodies Our relationships the world

this isn't how God created the world

it's the result of sin

but Ephesians tells us that one day God

is

going to bring together everything that

has caused division

he's going to make it all right again

forever

is going to be no more no more suffering

No More Tears no more Injustice No More

Death no more disease this is God's

ultimate purpose

all right

now look at verse 10. how will he

accomplish this purpose how will the

world really see

that this is God's purpose

what is the most clear way according to

Paul here

for people to see what God is doing

his intent was now verse 10. through the

church

the manifold wisdom of God should be

made known

the manifold which means brilliant the

brilliant wisdom of God

should be made known through the church

is that not incredible

Paul is saying it is the community not

just any one individual

no matter how great they are

it's the community

is through healed relationships it is

through the Christian Community

that the world can most clearly see the

incredible future God is preparing for

everyone

in other words

the church is God's for ordained way

to reveal his wisdom and Glory

isn't this incredible

one commentator says the church thus

appears to be God's pilot scheme for the

reconciled universe of the future

what does that mean

it's amazing it means that God will

unite everything under Christ one day

and the church the church gets to show

the world a taste of what that will be

like

the church is to be a new Society not

just a fellowship with our friends and

people we like

that but a new Society where this world

can see what peace can look like

under the healing kingship of Jesus

the church is how God chooses to reveal

His Brilliant wisdom to the world

think about this

if you are a God and you wanted to

reveal your wisdom to the whole world

how might you do it

well you could do it through creation

people can look at the high mountains

and the deep seas of the world can be in

awe

you could also do it through the law and

teachings people can look at the

orderliness of the world their the

orderliness of what life should be like

and be in awe

but here it says God doesn't choose the

law God doesn't choose creation what

does God choose the church God chooses

the church to reveal His Brilliant

wisdom to the world

how does God view the church what does

that show us about how God views the

now how do we view the church

many people think it's possible to be a

and to not be part of a church

and Paul has absolutely no idea what

people are talking about when they say

that

Paul is saying that it is critical

it is so important

to the world to understand the

Brilliance of the Gospel by having

churches

we may view the church as a hypocritical

Gathering of people

we may view it as a place to come on

Sundays we may view it with a

consumeristic mindset where if we're not

getting anything out of church or our

fellowship or our care groups or giving

my time to this person if we're not

getting anything out of it then we look

for another place

we may indirectly be viewing the church

as a place to get our needs met

a place where we can be served

so after services on Sundays the first

thing we might do is to go straight

through our friends straight to our

friends and talk to them and in the

process walking by three new people who

we would rather not talk to

it's great that we can enjoy church it's

great that we can enjoy Fellowship it's

fantastic

but God views the church as much more

than just the Gathering on Sundays to

spend time with our friends and be

comfortable

Paul says through the church God is

showing the whole world his wisdom God

is displaying the gospel through the

reconciled people

healed relationships

things that once divided us are now

brought down in the gospel and the whole

world Marvels at this and sees God's

wisdom

don't we all want to be a part of this

mission

we may look at the church and be

discouraged by all the things we don't

we might not get along with certain

personalities

we might have been hurt by people in the

past

it might be altogether easier less

painful to stop coming

but look at how Paul views the church

look at how God views the church a place

for healing a place for reconciliation

God's pilot plan for the reconciled

future of the whole universe

and the church is the starting point

but one day all things will be brought

into unity in Jesus Christ

God chooses to reveal his wisdom through

the church

and to what extent

did God have to go through in order to

bring this about

he gave his life

so that he could bring this about

now

Paul is not unrealistic right he knows

what a mess all churches can be to some

degree

look at his letters that he wrote

look at his writing to the Corinthians

to the Colossians to the Galatians all

of these churches are full of trouble

people creating conflict people with

pride fractured relationships

discouragement Paul knows what a mess

the church can be he is not naive

and yet he says the church is essential

how how is it essential here's one

example

how did how did you how did we how did

we all become the person we are today

is it primarily because of our own

decisions

not mainly

it's because of who our family is

because of our culture

our community our environment our

relationships

and most of the personal decisions we

make are a response to these things

so now that we're Christians and we want

the gospel to change our lives

do we think that this is going to happen

by us going on our own making decisions

by ourselves having a personal quiet

time in the morning

is that how it's going to work trying to

live a good lives ourselves

no we need a new family a new community

that's how the gospel works

that's how human beings work we need

community

this is what Paul tells his readers

I remember the main purpose

the main purpose like we said

that Paul writes this is to encourage

his friends

who are discouraged because Paul is in

so all this theology we just covered

was just a way for him to be able to say

I ask you therefore therefore in light

of everything I've said don't be

discouraged because of my sufferings for

you which are your glory

he wants to encourage his friends so

question how does this work

well Paul has shown us one of the things

that he's shown us is that suffering

cannot really hurt him

and it really can't hurt us either if we

are in Christ

see when when Paul calls himself

prisoner of Christ

he's also saying I'm not a prisoner of

Rome

he's not a prisoner of the Empire or the

government he is a prisoner of Christ

what he's saying is these things don't

bother me I'm not really your prisoner

and you cannot hurt me

why is it that Paul can say this he's in

jail he's in prison and yet he can say

he's a prisoner for Christ the question

is why

well everyone invests in something right

that says

this is really this is where I get my

worth this is where I get my value this

is my real hope this is my real identity

everyone invests our hearts into

something

that's why Jesus says for where your

treasure is there your heart will be

also

everyone has a treasure

something that we value

more than anything else

now in order for us to find out

what this treasure is something that

might give us some Clues is we ask

ourselves

what is it if taken away from me will

make me lose all meaning

what is it if I don't have this thing

will make my life meaningless

what is it

if taken away it takes away my will to

live

that makes me sad forever

if we find the answers to those

questions for ourselves that gives us

some Clues as to what our treasure is

now what's Paul's treasure

he's in prison right

and yet in verse 12 he says I'm not

really in prison I'm free he says in him

and through faith in him we may approach

god with freedom and confidence

that's pretty ironic isn't it Paul's in

Chains and Yeti says he can approach god

with freedom

do we see Paul's treasure he's not

really free but he is free

Paul's treasure is that

in Christ and because of the grace of

Christ he can approach God

that's this treasure that's why he can

say I am free I'm confident before God

to be known and loved by God that is

Paul's treasure and see even though he's

in prison

even though he's suffering

he's able to say that cannot really hurt

me

he's able to encourage his friends even

who are discouraged because he's

suffering

now if we make that our treasure like

Paul nothing can touch it there is

nothing this world can do to take away

that if that is our treasure

if our treasure is our material

possessions our job our status our kids

our relationships our spouse our friends

our family

all of these things can be taken away

look at job he lost everything

in a very short amount of time

all these things can be taken away

and when they are

we won't be able to function

because these things are our treasure

when these things are taken away

we start having thoughts like it's

better for me not to be alive

we get into depression

when our treasure is taken away but the

only thing that cannot be taken away

from us is if Jesus Christ is our

treasure if you make Jesus Christ your

treasure

not even the greatest suffering in the

world can take it away

now that doesn't mean that we want weep

that does not mean we're not going to

feel pain

but if we put our hearts there where

Jesus is it means that suffering will

not devastate us because we are free

and if we do that if we do that

we will be able to face discouragement

bravely

and even the only thing that even death

can do

is to make us more free

to bring us closer to Jesus Christ is

Jesus Christ your treasure do you

treasure him

now the last thing Paul says is my

suffering I don't want you to be

my suffering is For Your Glory

Jesus Christ is the only person who

earned the freedom and confidence to

approach God because he lived the

perfect life

but at the end of his life he was cast

out so that we could approach God

he was bound up by nails so that we

could be free

on the cross Jesus Christ took away the

one bit of suffering

that could actually destroy us forever

on the cross Jesus Christ experienced

separation from God so that we could be

reconciled to God that's the only kind

of suffering that could actually destroy

us forever and Jesus Christ took that

away

so that now if Jesus is our treasure

when we suffer it will not destroy us it

will actually only make us more like

how do we make Jesus our treasure live

by faith in him let the Wonder and mercy

of what he has done

let that touch you

would we be moved and would our hearts

melt by Jesus look at Paul Paul is happy

to be in prison because his sufferings

are for the glory of his friends

he's sacrificing himself

he's like Jesus now because that's what

Jesus did

and if we know that glory is coming

it will give us the strength to move

forward even when we suffer

it will give us the strength

and the desire to sacrifice our time for

other people

it moves us towards being kind

even the people who we would rather not

talk to

moves us towards reconciliation it moves

us towards being patient it moves us

towards an attitude of giving of

ourselves of Our Lives

that's what Paul does that's why he's in

jail he's sacrificing himself he's like

Jesus now because he has experienced The

Depths and the wonders of the love of

Christ that is that is something that is

possible for all of us if we let the

gospel melt our hearts

Paul asks his friends and he asks us to

not be discouraged by the suffering

happening in our lives

because one day Jesus Christ will make

things far more beautiful

than we can never dare imagine

that's why we can live with hope

let's pray

Lord Jesus we thank you for to stay

incredible

gift of Grace that you've given us

Lord we ask you to

touch Us in the ways we need to be in

our hearts Lord we ask you to meet us

Lord some of us may have believed the

truth of your gospel for a long time but

we haven't experienced it but we pray

that you would help us help our hearts

be melted by what you've done Lord so

that we may like Paul and like you Jesus

be living

in a way that's sacrificial to others

knowing that

Lord you have sacrificed yourself for us

so that we could be with you

when we thank you that you choose to

reveal your wisdoms through the church

and we ask that you would strengthen

strengthen us as individuals and as a

community as well or it's that we may

be a church that chooses to participate

in in what you're doing in this world

pray this in Jesus name amen

","":
Grace
