morning everyone

Happy Easter

if this is your first time visiting

Grace City we do want to say welcome to

you

thank you

my name is Tim Mills I'm one of the

elders here at the church

then Grace City you know we are a

community of Christians that long to

love and care for the city of Bangkok in

and by the grace of God

foreign

and we believe that the good the good

news of who Jesus is and what he has

done it brings transformation not just

to our own lives but for our neighbors

friends and family and for the good of

this city that we call home now

in recent weeks we've been looking at

the words of Jesus

words that speak

truth in love and love in the midst of

Truth

words that help us to know God

words that help us to understand his

good desires for our lives

words that lead us to walk forward in

obedience by his grace

um

in the scriptures Jesus speaks words of

peace and Reconciliation

he speaks words of rest in the midst of

our lives and our work

well

he speaks words of justice and mercy and

Hope

this morning Easter Sunday we turn our

attention to Jesus's words about life

itself

more specifically about the value of

life

we know that life is precious

each breath that we take is a gift and

each day we're given is of great value

life can be so beautiful

and yet

our lives are also punctuated with pain

and suffering

[Music]

we experience great joy but we also

experience Untold sorrow and despair

but the message of the Gospel of Jesus

Christ is that he understands our

suffering

a composite man

is

he understands the pain of this world

because he stepped into it and he

suffered

as we read the Bible today listen to the

words of Jesus as he speaks words of

Hope in the midst of Darkness

listen as he speaks words of life in the

midst of death

let us pray hello

Lord God we're grateful for your word

the Bible

prepare our hearts now to hear from you

you know the Deep recesses of our own

hearts and Minds

you know the thoughts and the

experiences that causes anguish fear and

despair perhaps even at this moment

we pray that your truth would speak into

our lives and help us

hey

in your holy name amen

our text this morning is the Gospel of

John chapter 11. we'll read verses 1

through 53.

I'll read the text in English the tie is

also on the screen

this is the word of God

now a certain man was ill

Lazarus of Bethany

the village of Mary and her sister

Martha it was Mary who anointed the Lord

with ointment and wiped his feet with

her hair whose brother Lazarus was ill

so the sisters sent to him saying Lord

he whom you love is ill

but when Jesus heard it he said

this illness does not lead to death

it is for the glory of God so that the

son of God

may be glorified through it

now Jesus loved Martha

and her sister and Lazarus

so when he heard that Lazarus was ill

he stayed two days longer than the place

where he was

then after this he said to the disciples

let us go to Judea again

the disciples said to him

Rabbi that the Jews were just now

seeking to Stone you

and are you going to go there again

Jesus answered are there not 12 hours in

the day

if anyone walks in the day he does not

stumble because he sees the light of

this world

but if anyone walks in the night he

stumbles

because the light is not in him

after saying these things he said to

them our friend Lazarus has fallen

asleep

but I go to awaken him

the disciples said to him Lord if he's

fallen asleep he will recover

now Jesus had spoken of his death

but they thought that he meant taking

rest and sleep

then Jesus told them plainly Lazarus has

died

and for your sake I am glad that I was

not there so that you may believe

but let us go to him

so Thomas called the twin said to his

fellow disciples let us also go that we

may die with him

now when Jesus came he found that

Lazarus had already been in the Tomb for

days

Bethany was near Jerusalem about two

miles off

and many of the Jews had come to Martha

and Mary to console them concerning

their brother

so when Martha heard that Jesus was

coming she went and met him

but Mary remained seated in the house

Martha said to Jesus Lord if you had

been here

my brother would not have died

but even now I know that whatever you

ask from God God will give you

Jesus said to her

your brother will rise again

Martha said to him I know that he will

rise again in the Resurrection on the

last day

Jesus said to her I am

the resurrection and the life

whoever believes in me though he die yet

shall he live

and everyone who lives and Believes In

Me shall never die do you believe this

he said to him yes Lord I believe that

you are the Christ the son of God who is

coming into the world

when she had said this

she went and called her sister Mary sane

in private the teacher is here and he's

calling for you

and when she heard it she Rose quickly

and went to him now Jesus had not yet

come into the village but was still in

the place where Martha had met him

when the Jews who were with her in the

house consoling her saw Mary rise

quickly and go out they followed her

supposing that she was going to the tomb

to weep there

now when Mary came to where Jesus was

and saw him

fell at his feet

saying to him Lord if you had been here

when Jesus saw her weeping and the Jews

who had come with her also leaping

he was deeply moved in his spirit and

greatly troubled and he said where have

you laid him

they said to him Lord come and see

Jesus wept

so the Jews said see how he loved him

but some of them said could not he who

opened the eyes of the blind man also

have kept this man from dying

than Jesus

deeply moved again came to the tomb

it was a cave and a stone lay against it

Jesus said take away the stone

Martha the sister of the dead man said

to him Lord by this time there will be

an odor

for he's been dead four days

did I not tell you

that if you believed you would see the

glory of God

so they took away the stone

and Jesus lifted his eyes and said

father I thank you

that you have heard me

I knew that you always hear me

but I said this on account of the people

standing around that they may believe

that you sent me

and when he had said these things he

cried out in a loud voice Lazarus come

out

the man who had died

came out

his hands and his feet bound with linen

strips in his face wrapped with a cloth

Jesus said to them unbind him and let

him go

many of the Jews therefore who had come

with Mary and had seen what he did

believed in him

but some of them went to the Pharisees

and told them what Jesus had done

so the chief priests and the Pharisees

gathered the council and said what are

we to do

for this man performs many signs if we

let him go on like this everyone will

believe in him

and the Romans will come

and take away both our place and our

nation

but one of them Caiaphas

who was the high priest that year said

to them you know nothing at all

nor do you understand that it is better

for you that one man should die for the

people

not that the whole nation should perish

he did not say this of his own accord

but being high priest that year he had

prophesied that Jesus would die for the

and not just for the nation only

but also to gather into one the children

of God who are scattered abroad

so from that day on they made plans

to put him to death

Jesus

loved the text says

Jesus loved Martha and her sister Mary

and her brother Lazarus

but as we read this account we learn

that as Lazarus was ill

Ness

and word was sent to Jesus to let him

know

doesn't hurry to go and see Lazarus no

he waits he waits for two days on

and Lazarus succumbs to his illness he

dies

where were you Jesus

where are you God

perhaps the raw emotion of this story

resonates with us this morning

because we know

the pain

of losing loved ones

we've experienced the suffering and

sickness of family and friends

we've heard stories or we've experienced

it firsthand

and we grieve the reality of death

and this broken world

perhaps if we're honest we know that

feeling of ask the same question

where were you God without you baby

we can feel the tension and pain in this

account from the gospel foreign

but he did die

Lazarus had died

death

it's a part of life right

but it seems to be the cruelest part of

existence

yes flowers fade in the grass withers

but life is worth so much more isn't it

with me

they're not

the Bible speaks of God creating humans

in his own image

everyone you pass on the street

is made in the image of God

your neighbor your colleague this person

that person the person sitting next to

goodbye

made by God

in His image

given life given a life with great value

this city is full of God's most precious

possession

yes humans are precious brought into

existence by

and here we see Mary and Martha in the

middle of their pain and grief

and into this Jesus speaks words of Hope

that is

I am the resurrection and the life

shall he live and everyone who lives and

Believes In Me shall never die do you

believe this foreign

do you believe this Jesus asked Martha

and she responded Yes Lord

I believe that you are the Christ the

later in the passage Jesus sends Martha

to go and call on Mary to come to him

and Mary comes to Jesus and falls at his

feet

repeating the same heart-wrenching

statement that Martha had said Lord if

you had been here

we needed you we need you

Jesus is with them now

and he enters fully into their sorrow

he has moved deeply in his Spirit the

text says

friends Jesus

knows our suffering

he understands he knows our sorrows

he says to them

and then Jesus calls out

in a loud voice

Lazarus come out

Lazarus steps forth from the tomb hello

he steps forth back to New Life

in this act of raising Lazarus from the

grave

Jesus robs death

of its lasting power

sometimes

each year during Holy Week and on Easter

Christians remember the death and

resurrection of Jesus Christ takes one

but really we celebrate Jesus's victory

over death all the time

it is the very foundation in Hope of the

Gospel itself

househood

the faith of the Christian is centered

on the reality of the resurrection of

Jesus Christ from the dead

in the same way that Jesus called

Lazarus back to life from his physical

Jesus calls out to this broken and

hurting world he calls out to Sinners

Like Me and like you come out of your

tombs of death and come into New Life

in Ephesians the Apostle Paul wrote this

and you were dead

in the trespasses and sins in which you

once walked

following the course of this world

following the prince of the power of the

air the spirit that is now at work in

the sons of Disobedience among whom we

all once lived in the passions of our

flesh

carrying out the desires of the body and

the mind and were by Nature children of

Wrath like the rest of mankind

but God being rich in Mercy because of

the great love with which he loved us

even when we were dead in our trespasses

made us alive together with Christ by

Grace you have been saved and raised us

up with him and seated us with him in

the Heavenly places in Christ Jesus so

that in the coming ages he might show

the immeasurable Riches of his grace and

kindness toward us in Christ Jesus for

by Grace you have been saved through

faith and this is not of your own doing

it is the gift of God not a result of

work so that no one may boast

for we are his workmanship created in

Christ Jesus for good works which God

prepared beforehand that we should walk

in them

yes God being rich in Mercy makes us

alive together with Christ

as Jesus demonstrated his power over

death conquering death itself we are

brought back from Death to life

I'm not

as we look to Jesus in faith as we

believe along with Martha and Mary that

he is the resurrection and the life we

experience New Life in and through him

we experience New Life

in him even though we were dead in our

trespasses and sins foreign

physical death is still

part of our lives

it's a part of this broken World brought

on through the sin of humanity

and even though Jesus raised Lazarus

from the dead Lazarus would still die

again one day

but the resurrection of Jesus Christ

from the dead gives us the hope to live

in this present Life as we look to the

resurrection that is to come

here

when Jesus comes again

to establish his kingdom in full and for

eternity

Jesus has been Victorious over death and

Reigns in power

in his book new morning mercies Paul

David Tripp

writes this

the resurrection promises you all the

grace you need

between Jesus's resurrection and yours

if your end has already been guaranteed

that all the grace you need along the

way

has been guaranteed as well

or you would never make it

to your appointed end

future Grace always carries with it the

promise of present Grace

Mercies

in First Corinthians chapter 15.

maybe something called in advance

behold I tell you a mystery

we shall not all sleep

but we shall all be changed

in a moment in the twinkling of an eye

at the last trumpet

for the trumpet will sound and the dead

will be raised imperishable and we shall

be changed

for this perishable body must put on the

imperishable

and this Mortal body must put on

immortality

when the perishable puts on the

imperishable and the Mortal puts on

immortality then shall come to pass the

saying that is written

is swallowed up in Victory

oh death where is your Victory O Death

where is your sting

The Sting of death is sin

and the power of sin is the law but

thanks be to God who gives us the

victory through our Lord

Jesus Christ

therefore my brothers my beloved

brothers be steadfast and movable always

abounding in the work of the Lord

knowing that in the Lord your labor is

not in vain

Buddhism

alive foreign

friends at Easter we remember that that

Jesus gave himself

for us

the death that he died on the cross was

our death

I'm thy people um

he died for our sins

he paid the punishment of our own

Brokenness our own sins

but the hope of Easter is found

in the fact that Jesus rose from the

dead

man

the hope that we have is in Jesus's

power over death itself

that is what gives us hope for today and

hope forever

regarding the truth of Easter Theologian

in t right said this

the message of Easter

is that God's new world has been

unveiled in Jesus Christ

and that you're now invited to belong to

it

friends if you are a Christian this

morning be reminded of the resurrection

of Jesus and the hope that you have in

him

our God is not dead he is alive

and and for those of you here today that

would say I don't I'm not a Christian I

don't I don't know that I believe these

things

let me

and to you I would say consider the

words of Jesus this morning

these words of life and hope to you

trust in him and and come to him in

faith

oh

and no

that one day you will be raised to New

Life to be with him forever

yes we are invited to New Life in Jesus

we are called to leave our tombs of

to walk forward into New Life

with my looking in faith to Jesus the

one who conquered that

the one who Reigns in
