so we are continuing our time in

Daniel and we'll be looking at Daniel

chapter 9 today

and what is the context leading up to

chapter nine Israel is scattered

throughout Babylon uh Jerusalem and the

temple have been destroyed God promised

in chapter 7 that the saints of God will

receive a kingdom

he promised in chapter 8 that the

sanctuary will be restored

but before this happens Kings and

kingdoms will rise and fall which means

that most likely there will be long

periods of time before these promises

are fulfilled

the promises of the sanctuary being

restored and the New Kingdom they seem

so far off

there's a narrow 66 mile land strip that

connects South and Central America

that's called the dairy and GAP and it's

a mountainous rainforest with no roads

and for those who cross it there are

many dangers along the way

the migrants risk hunger they risk

exhaustion drowning robbery

broken ankles and snake bites

and in 2022 250

000 migrants crossed this roadless

stretch of land heading towards Mexico

and the U.S

what would make so many people take this

journey this five-day journey across 66

miles of this treacherous Terrain

they heard from family members or people

who are living in the country that they

are migrating to that the land that they

are living in is good

what do they need to motivate them

to do this they need hope

hope in a new and a better home

and so that's what we will see today

that God gives us in Daniel chapter nine

he gives us hope this is the same thing

that the Israelites needed at the end of

chapter eight

they needed hope and God has given that

to them in chapter seven and eight but

we'll see in chapter 9 today that he has

specifically given this to the

Israelites and to us to see that through

the life of Daniel why hope looks like

an exile and he assures Israel and he

assures us of his new kingdom to come

Daniel 9 is meant to be a message of

hope for us just like it was a hope for

the Israelites live in thousands of

years ago in Exile

God has promised to bring us out of

Exile and into our new home in his

kingdom

so with this in mind let's look at our

text Daniel chapter 9.

in the first year of Darius the son of a

hisseris by descent amid who was made

King over the realm of the Chaldeans in

the first year of his Reign I Daniel

perceived in the books of the books the

numbers of years that according to the

word of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet

must pass before the end of the

desolations of Jerusalem namely 70 years

then I turn my face to the Lord God

seeking him by prayer and pleased for

Mercy with fasting and sackcloth and

Ashes I pray to the Lord my God and made

confession saying O Lord the great and

awesome God who keeps Covenant and

steadfast love with those who love him

and keep his Commandments

we have sinned and done wrong and acted

wickedly and rebelled turning aside

from your Commandments and rules we have

not listened to your servants the

prophets who spoke in your name to our

Kings our princes and our fathers and to

all the people of the land

To You O Lord belongs righteousness but

to US Open shame is at this day to the

men of Judah to the inhabitants of

Jerusalem and to all Israel those who

are near and those who are far away and

all the lands to which you have driven

them because of the treachery that they

have committed against you

to us O Lord belongs open shame to our

Kings to our princes and to our fathers

because we have sinned against you to

the Lord Our God belong mercy and

forgiveness

for we have rebelled against him

and have not obeyed the voice of the

Lord

Our God by walking in his laws which he

set before us by his servants the

prophets

all Israel has transgressed your law and

turned aside refusing to obey your voice

and the curse and oath that are written

in the law of Moses the servant of God

has been poured out upon us because we

have sinned against him

he has confirmed his words which he

spoke against us and against our rulers

who ruled us by bringing upon us a great

calamity

for under the whole Heaven there has not

been done anything like what has been

done against Jerusalem

as it is written in the law of Moses All

This calamity has come upon us yet we

have not and treated the favor of the

Lord Our God turning from our iniquities

and gaining Insight by your truth

therefore the Lord has kept ready the

Calamity and has brought it upon us

for the Lord our God is righteous in all

the works that he has done and we have

not obeyed his voice

and now O Lord Our God who brought your

people out of the land of Egypt with the

mighty hand and have made a name for

yourself

as at this day we have sinned we have

done wickedly

O Lord according to all your righteous

acts let your anger and your wrath turn

away from your City Jerusalem your Holy

Hill because for our sins and for the

iniquities of our fathers Jerusalem and

your people have become a byword among

all who are around us

now therefore O Lord listen to the

prayer of your servant and to his pleas

for mercy and for your own Sake O Lord

make your face still shine upon your

Sanctuary which is desolate

oh my God incline your ear in here open

your eyes and see your desolations and

the city that is called by your name for

we do not present our pleas before you

because of our righteousness

but because of your great Mercy

oh Lord hear O Lord forgive oh Lord pay

attention and act delay not for your own

sake oh my God because your city and

your people are called by your name

while I was speaking and praying

confessing my sin and the sin of My

People Israel and presenting my plea

before the Lord my God for the Holy Hill

of my God while I was speaking in prayer

the man Gabriel whom I had seen in the

vision at the first came to me in Swift

flight at the time of the evening

sacrifice he made me understand speaking

with me and saying oh Daniel I have now

come out to give you insight and

understanding at the beginning of your

pleas for Mercy a word went out and I

have come to tell it to you for you are

greatly loved therefore consider the

word and understand the vision

70 weeks are decreed about your people

in your Holy City to finish the

transgression to put an end to sin and

to atone for iniquity to bring in

Everlasting righteousness to sell both

vision and profit and to annoy a Most

Holy place

now therefore and understand that from

the going out of the word to restore and

build Jerusalem to the coming of an

anointed one a prince there shall be

seven weeks then for 62 weeks it shall

be built again with squares and moat but

in a troubled time and after the 62

weeks an anointed one shall be cut off

and shall have nothing

and the people of the prince who is to

come shall destroy the city in the

sanctuary its end shall come with a

flood and to the end there shall be War

desolations are a Creed and he shall

make a strong Covenant with many for one

week and for half of the week he shall

put an end to sacrifice an offering

and on the wing of Abominations shall

come one who makes desolate

until the decreed end is poured out on

the desolator

does Israel's situation of being in

Exile as a result of disobedience

feel like a repeat of a scene from

another place in Scripture

think back to the beginning of creation

God had placed Adam and Eve in a

beautiful garden he had told them you

may surely eat of every tree in the

garden except for the tree of the

knowledge of Good and Evil and in the

day that you eat of it you shall surely

die

and when Adam and Eve disobeyed God by

eating the forbidden fruit God was

faithful to his word Adam and Eve did

physical death would be imminent but it

wouldn't be immediate

God said

behold the man has become like one of us

knowing Good and Evil

now at least he reached out his hand and

take also of the tree of life and eat

and live forever therefore the Lord sent

him out of the Garden of Eden to work

the ground from which he was taken he

drove out the man and at the east of the

Garden of Eden he placed the cherubim in

a flaming sword that turned every way to

guard the way to the Tree of Life

and so all of humanity along with Adam

and Eve have been in Exile since that

dark day

life is not the way it once was in the

garden

sin has corrupted all of humanity in all

of the world that we live in

we like Israel in Daniel's day are now

Exiles living in a foreign land that is

not our home country

and I want to look at three points in

our text today that were meant to

encourage us to persevere through Exile

and to strengthen our hope of making it

home to God's Everlasting Kingdom

the first point I want to look at is to

base your hope of receiving a new home

in God's Kingdom on your Covenant God in

his word alone not yourself

and what does Daniel chapter 9 reveal to

us about what should and shouldn't be

the foundation of her hope

let's look first at what the foundation

should be and then we'll look at what it

shouldn't be

in Daniel chapter 9 Daniel acts sends us

an example to follow for God's people

who are living in Exile

he shows us that the base of our

foundation of our hope is our faithful

Covenant God and his word

in verse 2

we read in the first year of his Reign I

Daniel proceed in the books the number

of years that according to the word of

the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet must

pass before the end of the desolations

of Jerusalem namely 70 years

and so the book of Jeremiah mentions in

a couple of places about this 70-year

period of Jerusalem's desolation and how

God would return Israel back whenever it

was completed

Daniel is most likely referring to

Chapters 25 and 29 of Jeremiah when he

says he perceived in the books according

to Jeremiah

so in Jeremiah 29 10-14 we read for thus

says the Lord when 70 years are

completed for Babylon I will visit you

and I will fulfill to you my promise and

bring you back to this place

for I know the plans I have for you

declares the Lord plans for your welfare

and not for evil to give you a future

and a hope

and then you will call upon me and come

and pray to me and I will hear you you

will seek and find me when you seek me

with all your heart

I will be found by you declares the Lord

and I will restore your fortunes and

gather you from all the nations and all

the places where I've driven you

declares the Lord and I will bring you

back to the place from which I sent you

into exile

and so the Lord has great plans for

Israel and he reveals those plans to

them

why

we find the answer in verse 11 to give

you a future and a hope

God reveals to us in his word his plans

for our future in order to give us hope

and Daniel was an example of this he has

found great hope of Israel's return from

Exile in the book of Jeremiah

so what does he do he turns to the Lord

in prayer and repentance

and what is God's response to Daniel's

prayer

another a word goes out from the Lord

and the angel Gabriel delivers God's

message to Daniel

and what does he say in verses 22

through 23. he says oh Daniel I have now

so again we see how how God works here

God sends a word a message of Hope about

his plan for Israel's future to his

people who are most likely feeling

hopeless after 66 years of being in

Exile

and God produces hope in the hearts of

his people through his word

God produces hope in the hearts of his

people through his word

and we have a great and awesome God who

cares about his people and wants us to

have great hope

Daniel's example here in chapter 9 it

teaches us to base Our Hope from Exile

on God's word

God has given us his word and designed

it to guide us through exile

it gives us great hope so that by his

grace we keep going and we make it home

he's given us his completed words so

that we understand the Exile like no

other generation of God's people have

ever understood it before

God's word is meant to nourish our souls

on the long stretch home

it strengthens Our Hope in what is to

come so that we continue in the faith

until we reach our final destination

which is our new home with God

and Daniel also bases his Hope on God's

character

one of if not the most dominant theme in

the Book of Daniel is God's sovereignty

God is in control of all things even

mighty Nations like Babylon that ruled

over Israel for a Time

God is the one who used Babylon to drive

Israel into Exile and so he must be the

one who brings them back from it

God is able but is God willing

Daniel mentioned several times in his

prayer that God has shown himself

righteous and dealing with Israel Israel

has broken the Covenant that God made

with them and so in order for God to be

righteous he must deal with Israel's

disobedience

in the opening of Daniel's prayer it

focuses heavily on God's righteousness

in Israel's sin

if you were to just listen to the the

beginning of Daniel's prayer then you

might think that there isn't much hope

for God bringing Israel back

but it's in verse 9 that Daniel's prayer

begins to to give those in Exile hope of

God returning them back to the land

and verse 90 Daniel says to the Lord Our

God belong mercy and forgiveness

and in the Hebrew here the words mercy

and forgiveness are in the plural form a

Cindy gradanus in his book preaching

Christ from Daniel says the plural means

either the intensity of God's mercy and

forgiveness or that God showed these

qualities many times

and so Daniel is indicating that God is

full of mercy and forgiveness

Israel can have hope of coming back from

Exile because God is merciful and

forgiving

he has the ability to show Mercy by

withholding the Covenant curses that

Israel deserves

and he has the ability to forgive and

not hold Israel's sins against them

forever

he must possess these qualities if

Israel is to have any hope of return

because as Daniel prayer clearly points

out

Israel's sins are many

and Daniel also points out in his prayer

several times and in several different

ways two more characteristics of God

which are his Covenant faithfulness and

his Covenant Love

Daniel chapter 9 is the only place in

the Book of Daniel where the word Yahweh

God's covenant name is used and it's

used eight times in this chapter of

Daniel

and Verses 4 and 7 we read of God's

covenant faithfulness and love

and verse 4 it says I pray to the Lord

my God and made confession saying O Lord

the great and awesome God who keeps

Covenant in steadfast love with those

who love him and keep his Commandments

in verse 7 he says To You O Lord belongs

to righteousness but to US Open shame

and so Daniel says that God is a

character or characterized by

righteousness because he has been

faithful to the Covenant he has done

what he said that he would do in the

Covenant

Israel is characterized by shame because

they have not been faithful to the

God's covenant word is a solid rock

Israel can count on God to be faithful

to his Covenant because of God's

covenant faithfulness

God brought Israel into the land that he

had promised them he gave them

protection from their enemies he made

his presence known to them in a special

way

he provided Vineyards and houses for

them that they didn't have to work for

Daniel knows the reason Israel is

experiencing Exile and Jerusalem is

desolated is because God is Not only

faithful to his Covenant promises a

blessing but he is also faithful to his

Covenant Promises of the curses found in

the Covenant

and while God's covenant faithful to the

Covenant curses wouldn't have brought

Israel hope

in a way it would have in another way in

that they would have known that God

would be faithful to every part of his

Covenant word

that Daniel mentions in the law of Moses

alongside the Covenant blesses and

blessings and curses is found a

provision God made for Israel whenever

they broke the Covenant

and Leviticus 26

40-45 we read but if they confess their

iniquity and iniquity of their fathers

in their treachery that they committed

against me and also in Walking contrary

to me so that I won't contrary to them

and brought them into the land of their

enemies if then their uncircumcised

heart is humbled and they make amends

for their iniquity then I will remember

my Covenant with Jacob and I will

remember my Covenant with Isaac and my

Covenant with Abraham and I will

remember the land but the land shall be

abandoned by them and enjoy its sabbaths

while it lies desolate without them

and they shall make amends for their

iniquity because they spurn my rules and

their soul abhorred my statues

yet for all that when they are in the

land of their enemies I will not spurn

them for I am their lord and the Lord

their God

but I will for their sake remember the

Covenant with their forefathers whom I

brought out of the land of Egypt in the

sight of the Nations that I might be

their God I am the Lord

and do you see in these verses God's

steadfast love that Daniel mentions in

his prayer

my youngest daughter she loves to use

the the word the Thai word ting to to

throw away something every time she goes

to the the trash can and she throws away

something she'll say team and it's a

very fun word to hear pronounced and

it's a fun word to use it just has a a

good ring to it as long as you are the

subject doing the tinging and not the

object being teamed

one of my Thai language teachers one day

she explained to our class what the word

means and then she Illustrated it and

she said the reason that there are so

many Street dogs in Thailand is because

a boyfriend will buy his girlfriend a

cute little puppy a small puppy and

he'll give that to her as a gift and

then whenever the puppy gets older and

it's not as cute and it's rambunctious

or whenever the relationship ends the

girl will will take and she'll leave the

puppy on the side of the road or at the

the 7-Eleven with no desire to ever

return to get it

God does not like the person who Tings a

dog on the side of the road with no

desire to ever return

God says to Israel in these verses I

don't care how ugly you are or

rebellious you are I'm not going to team

you I am your God and you are my people

I'm not going to give up on you repent

and turn to me and receive the wonderful

blessings I have for you

Daniel had great hope for Israel's

future because he had based his Hope on

God's covenant word

that re-expressed God's covenant love

for his Covenant people that was backed

by his Covenant faithfulness

future because his Hope was based on

God's covenant word that expressed God's

covenant love for his Covenant people

and was backed by his Covenant

faithfulness

when God made a covenant with Abraham he

did something to demonstrate this to his

people that they could trust in his

promises

he had Abram kill animals and split them

apart and so this created a bloody mass

a horrible sight to see

the sun goes down and it's dark a

smoking fire put pot and a flaming torch

passed between the hands of these

animals

and so what is happening

this was a ritual that happened in

Abram's day that was made whenever

someone made an agreement with someone

the members would walk through it

together and it signified that a person

is saying let what has happened to these

animals happen to me if I break the

Covenant the agreement that we've made

and so the in the uncovenant that God

made with Abraham the smoking pot pot

and the flaming torch they symbolize God

and so God was saying to Abraham let

what has happened to these animals

happen to me if I don't fulfill my

Covenant promises to you

God has always communicated and wanted

his people to know that we can trust his

word

and it is through Covenant making that

God has demonstrated this to us

when the Israelites and Exile read

Daniel's prayer they would have been

encouraged to have great hope of God

returning them from Exile and restoring

the city because of God's covenant

God would reveal more of his Covenant

Love and faithfulness to his people

around 500 years later

this time God wouldn't use the the

bloody carcasses of animals to prove his

Covenant faithfulness

he would use the beaten and bloody body

of his own precious son that was hung on

the cross

I think one of the most hopeful passages

in God's word is found in Romans 8 31-30

32.

Paul says What then shall we say to

these things if God is for us who can be

against us he who did not spare his own

son but gave him up for us all how will

he not also with him graciously give us

all things

and Paul is reasoning hereby comparing

the value of two things he's reasoning

from the greater to the Lesser if God

has given us something so great as his

son

to prove and demonstrate to us

um he's going to give us all his

blessings how will he not give that to

us

he has given Jesus for us in order to

give us a new home with him

we can be assured that he will make good

on his promise to give us a new home in

his coming Kingdom because it is of way

lesser value than Jesus his son

and how does the foundation of your hope

look

is it based upon the strong Foundation

of God's character in Word

last year a section of a bridge

collapsed along udon Suk Road

investigators went out and found that a

sinkhole had developed underneath the

bridge which was most likely a result of

rainwater washing away the foundation

the bridge had lost its foundation and

so it collapsed

and as we'll look at in a few minutes

the road home will not be easy

there will be Wars and desolations to

come right up until the end

and the weight of these will come

bearing down on us like a weight of a

bridge on its foundation

we want to have a strong foundation for

our hope to rest upon so that the weight

and the pressures that we experience in

life don't crumble Our Hope of return

from Exile and a new home in God's

Kingdom

we've seen what the foundation of Our

Hope for return from Exile and our new

home should be let's look now at what it

shouldn't be based upon

in verse 4 Daniel says then I turn my

face to the Lord God seeking him by

prayer and pleased for Mercy with

fasting and sackcloth and Ashes

a sackcloth and Ashes were used to

assembleize what was going on in the

israelite's heart or it was supposed to

when an Israelite put on sackcloth and

Ashes it was a sign of mourning for

something that they had lost like

another person

or it symbolized repentance and humility

and in the case of Daniel is probably

represents both he is mourning over the

condition of his people in the city and

also showing a sign of repentance and

humility before the Lord

and much of Daniel's prayer focuses on

Humanity humility and repentance in his

prayer he shows heartfelt sorrow over

his sin and Israel's sin

and this leads Daniel to humility

prayer the shame that belongs to Israel

and verses

18 through 19. we see Daniel look to God

for deliverance

he says oh my God incline your ear and

hear open your eyes and see your

desolations in the city that is called

by your name for we do not present our

pleased before you because of our

righteousness

but because of your great Mercy O Lord

hear O Lord forgive O Lord pay attention

and act

and so a contrite heart like Daniel had

it puts you in a position where you

clean to God's promises

you realize that you have nothing else

to base your Hope on

what would this part of Daniel's prayer

head motivated the Israelites to do

to turn away from basing their Hope on

themselves and instead base it solely on

God in his word

if we base Our Hope on ourselves then we

will be hopeless our only hope is is to

do as Daniel and turn away from trying

to earn or present Merit before God and

look to our covenant God alone for his

mercy and forgiveness

we must come to God as Beggars and

sackcloth and Ashes with empty hands

whenever we base Our Hope on God and His

word it leads us to Jesus

let's look now at our second point

rest assured that God now favors you

because of Christ's faithfulness and

obedience to the Covenant

in Daniel's prayer he represents both

himself and the people of Israel to the

in verse 20 he says while I was speaking

and praying confessing my sin and the

sin of My People Israel

Daniel confessed his sin and the sin of

Israel to the Lord in the hope that God

would fulfill his Covenant Promises of

return that we saw in Leviticus 26 and

that Jeremiah mentions in Jeremiah 29.

how does God respond to Daniel's prayer

confession

he sends his Angel Gabriel to deliver a

message of Hope

he tells Daniel that he is greatly loved

and this would have been assigned to

Israel that they could rest assured that

Daniel's intercession for them had

worked and God would answer Daniel's

prayers

Daniel was not only an example for God's

people to follow

he was a foreshadow of a greater one to

come

in verses 26 through 27 the angel

Gabriel called this greater one to come

the anointed one

the anointed one would be like Daniel in

that he that God would look upon him

and look at him as if he were his people

this anointed one would represent God's

people

like Daniel because of his faith and

obedience to God's covenant word God

would show favor and bless his people

this anointed one unlike Daniel though

would not have to confess his own sin

because he would be sinless

instead of confessing the the sins of

God's people he would bear God's

people's sins

and is because of Jesus God's anointed

one that all of God's promises to his

people like the ones that we find in

verses 24 through 27 are fulfilled

so we can rest assured that God favors

us because of Christ's faith and

Christ has represented us before God

with his spotless life and death and God

is pleased with us because of his

intercession for us

let's look lastly at the messes of Hope

of a home in God's kingdom that God

calls us to fix our eyes upon

and Daniel

24-27 it's written in a way that leaves

a lot of room for different

interpretations as you look at the

message that

is presented here you have to decide how

to interpret the seven weeks 70 weeks is

it literal or is it symbolic who are the

anointing ones who is the prince who is

the desolator and since you have so many

questions to answer you have a lot of

different interpretations of this

passage

and the good news is that the overall

message is clear

we want to understand the details

because it's God's word and all of God's

word even the details are given with a

purpose

but we take comfort in knowing that if

we get the details wrong we can still

have a good understanding of the overall

message of hope that is found here

God has heard Daniel's request for him

to show mercy and forgiveness to his

people and to restore the city of

Jerusalem

what exactly does that look like

what should we realistically be hoping

for

one thing that we see is that full

restoration of God's people and City are

coming

in verse 24 it says 70 weeks are decreed

about your people and your Holy City to

finish the transgression to put an end

to sin and to atone for iniquity to

bring in Everlasting righteousness to

sell both vision and profit and to

anoint a Most Holy

have you ever seen a fold-out figurine

model uh they're they're pretty cool

they usually start out as a flat piece

of paper and as you open it up it kind

of turns into a 3D model

last year around Christmas time someone

sent our family fold out of a Christmas

tree and so as you fold it out the

branches begin to spread out and then

the ornaments that are tucked under the

branches kind of fold out too and so by

the time that you have folded it out

completely there is a Christmas tree

there with the ornaments hanging and

there's a star on top and it's really

cool cool to see

by the time Christmas was over our girls

had worn out this fold out from opening

it and closing it so many times

and so we we put it in the storage but

it wasn't in great condition

God's sending this message of Hope to

his people is like him giving us a fold

the 70-week period is like a fold out

that produces a 3D image of our new home

in God's kingdom to come

God will unfold this 70-week period And

as he does things will take place so

that at the end everything that is

mentioned in verse 24 will have happened

it will be spectacular and it will be

ours

what is this through the image of our

new home in in God's Kingdom look like

it will be wonderful

God tells us six things he's going to do

over this 60-week period

the first four they deal with the

world's biggest problem that mentioned

last week which is sin

sin resulted in all of humanity ending

up in Exile from the garden

and it ended up in Israel being exiled

from Jerusalem

the rulers of the Nations that rule over

Israel have sinful desires and so they

oppress the Israelites

God must take care of the guilty status

the effects and the presence of sin in

his Fallen Creation in order to bring us

into our new home

and God will do this over this 70-week

period

he will put an end to sin so that we no

longer commit transgressions against him

he will atone for our sins so that we no

longer remain guilty before a righteous

judge

we will no longer have to live under

conditions of Oppression because God

will bring in Everlasting righteousness

he will rule and Reign Over us as a Good

Shepherd cares for his flock

he will give us new hearts that are free

from sin that gladly heed his Direction

instead of rebel and run our own way

and what a great future we have waiting

for us

interpreting to still both vision and

profit is a little tricky you can

interpret this in different ways most

commentators interpret sill in two ways

still can mean to authenticate something

like a document if you drive to to Grace

City you know that whenever you enter

the parking deck you receive a slip of

paper

and whenever you see that slip of paper

you know that you have to get two Grace

City stamps on it before exiting the

parking deck and if you don't you're

going to have to pay the parking

attendant 50 by it so if you have one

one stamp it's 50 Baht you need two

stamps and what are these steps for is

to authenticate or prove that you were

at Grace City

and still can also mean to dispose of

something by storing it away

if an ancient document was no longer

needed it would be rolled up and sealed

to be stored to be put away

and it could be that the word Sill

is intended to carry both of these

meanings here

I tend to lean toward interpreting Sil

as disposing of something that's no

longer needed

visions and prophets were God's way of

communicating to his people about the

future and what would come

and when we get to our new home there

will be no longer be a need for God to

use them to guide us home because we

will be home

it's like using a map once you get to

your destination you no longer need it

at the end of 70 weeks

God's vision and profits will have

served their purpose

we have reached our new home with God so

God will sell them as something that is

no longer needed

and we come now to the the last thing

God will do he will anoint a most holy

or a Most Holy place

the Hebrew text here doesn't have the

word place in it just has and to anoint

almost holy and so most translations

they translate it as most holy place

and we'll have in the footnote in

parentheses thing or one to let you know

that there's a possibility that it could

be translated this way

so we have to decide how to translate it

and I think from the context of this

passage and the context of scripture the

best way to translate it is the Most

Holy One

and this Most Holy One is referring to

Jesus and so even if I'm wrong about

this translation even if it's supposed

to be holy place or holy thing I think I

still think it is ultimately pointing us

to Jesus

and so the scriptures refer to Jesus as

the anointed one the one who was

anointed in order to be lifted up on a

cross in shame to take away his people's

shame

so that he would be lifted up high in

glory

there will be a lot of great things

about living in God's Kingdom no pain no

sickness no death no sin having a good

and kind King which means that we will

be free from our oppression

I won't have to fix all the broken

things around the house because

Brokenness and toil of word is a result

of sin and God has done away with sin

what will be the greatest thing we will

experience

it will be being in the presence of

Jesus

to observe his glory to so can Jesus and

all his Splendor and his radiant

radiance

can you almost smell the aroma and taste

the goodness of our new home

last week mentioned that Daniel's heart

was Heavy after he saw the vision of the

RAM and the Goat these animals were

symbolic of powerful Nations which meant

Israel would continue to live under

these powerful Nations and be oppressed

for a while

there was hope in chapter 8 but the

darkness of some of these powerful

Nations they created crowded out that

hope so that it was hard for Daniel to

see it

and at the end of chapter after Daniel

has seen the vision of the powerful

Nations that will rule over Israel he

said I was overcome and lay sick for

some days

Daniel's heart was Heavy thinking about

Israel's future

have you ever been there

you look at your current circumstances

and you see darkness and in your mind in

your heart you look ahead to the Future

and all you can see is Darkness

maybe you're in a place like that right

now where you you see the Brokenness of

yourself in the the Brokenness of the

city that we live in and it's a dark

place

you see the oppression and the

persecution of God's people around the

world and it's hard to see a bright

future for God's people

it can be overwhelming at times

God knows the darkness his people are

living in during exile

he knows the darkness can overwhelm his

people and it can be hard for his people

to remain hopeful in the midst of that

Darkness

and that is why he has sent us this

message in Daniel chapter nine he sent

it to bolster Our Hope in a new home

it's like Gabriel is saying to us take

this fold out of God's kingdom and let

it be a reminder that God will fully

restore his people and bring in his new

kingdom which will be your new home

take it and open it and close it and

open it and close it so that you are a

minded of what you have to look forward

to as you're on the way home

God is saying I give it to you to

produce hope in you as you remain in

exile for a Time

right now there is still a lot of

darkness in us and also in the land

but rest assured that at the end of 70

weeks things are going to be wonderful

they are going to be spectacular

one day God is going to give us

everything our hearts long for in the

restoration of our hearts and also of

the city that we live in

cling to his promises that give us hope

and is our light in darkness

it is certain

graduation speaking speeches are often

motivating for the graduates who are

graduating gives them a hope of a bright

future

the speech is usually given by some

famous actor or some famous politician

someone who started out in poverty with

humble beginnings but made it big in

life

the students are given hope that upon

graduating they can achieve success in a

good life like this speaker

and the truth is is that it's possible

but it's not guaranteed

there will be some who go on to achieve

a great career make a lot of money and

have a beautiful home and family

there will also be some who won't

every so often I'll read in the news

that a few graduates went out the night

the night of graduation to celebrate

they had a few drinks I decided to drive

home and ended up in a car wreck on the

way home

they survived the the wreck but they

were paralyzed or had severe brain

damage

the hope of a bright future they heard

earlier that day at graduation was

crushed only a few hours later that

night

the bright future that graduation

speakers often speak of is not certain

Gabriel says 70 weeks are decreed about

your people and your holy city which

means that the time frame and what is

Promised is guaranteed by our covenant

God

it is money that has already been

deposited into our account that will

receive and have access to at the end of

70 weeks

you can count on this don't lose Heart

during this time

your Sovereign faithful merciful

forgiving and steadfast loving God is

orchestrating everything to bring about

something wonderful for you look to

these promises and cling to them for

they are certain

what follows in the rest of the chapter

communicates to us that we should be

prepared for the Long Haul as we make

the difficult journey home

why does Gabriel give God's people the

the fold out at the beginning of the

message

I think it's so that we are able to

stare at it as we receive the additional

information that he gives to us

Gabriel splits these 70 weeks into three

periods of time and talks about what's

going to happen during each period of

time

and again there are a lot of different

interpretations for the rest of chapter

nine some people interpret the 70 weeks

as communicating a literal figure some

see it as being symbolic and so there's

a wide range of suggestions for the end

of this chapter there isn't enough time

for us to look at the main

interpretations and so what I'm going to

do is just just give you my

interpretation of this ending section

and as I mentioned before even though

the specifics of this passage are

debated the overall message is clear

we should be prepared for the Long Haul

as we make the difficult journey home

so what are we to make of this 70-week

time span that is given

I think 70 is a symbolic figure

scripture often uses numbers

symbolically the the number seven is

often used to show completion or

Perfection tin is often used to show

fullness of time

and we see Jesus use the exact same

numbers symbolically in Matthew 18

verses 21 through 22.

Peter goes to Jesus and asks him Lord

how often will my brother sin against me

and I forgive him

as many as seven times Jesus said to him

I do not say to you seven times but 70

times 7. so whenever Jesus says

that you are to forgive your brother 70

times 7 he doesn't mean literally 490

times and then after after that you

don't have to forgive him anymore

he means that you need to completely and

fully forgive your brother no matter how

many times he sins against you

and so 70 weeks is 7 times 10 times 7 in

the 70 weeks symbolize symbolize a

perfect complete and full period of time

that God will take to restore his people

and bring us home

God will not take a second longer than

the amount of time that he is allotted

to accomplish his plans for us

in these 70 weeks are broken down into

three periods of time and reveal that

God's promise of restoration of God's

people in the city will come in three

stages

a seven week period a 62-week period and

a one-week period

and in each period significant events

take place

I think it's helpful to look at the

first 69 weeks as looking at what will

happen before the coming of Christ

and look at the last week as a time from

Christ's first coming into a second

so what takes place in the first 69

weeks during the first and second

periods

these two periods of time are about the

return of God's people back to Earthly

Jerusalem and the restoration of the

Earthly City

what takes place in the first seven

weeks

in verse 25 we read now therefore

no one understands that are from the

going out of the word to restore and

anointed one of Prince there shall be

seven weeks

and I think this seven week period is

symbolic for a short period of time

during this time a word will go out to

start building Earthly Jerusalem

in the word of Hope of rebuilding

Earthly Jerusalem would eventually

become a reality

in the next extended period of time of

62 weeks the city would be rebuilt

and then later prophetic books like Ezra

and Nehemiah we read that this prophecy

was fulfilled and Jerusalem was

eventually rebuilt

in the last week that is described in

verses 26 through 27 is the period

between Jesus first coming and his

second coming

verse 26 is referring to Jesus when it

says that an anointed one shall be cut

off and shall have nothing

at the cross Jesus had nothing his

clothes were taken from him God the

Father looked upon him as Sin his own

fellow Jews hated him

his disciples had abandoned him the

night before his death

now the cross Jesus was cut off meaning

put to death

and so it's through the death of Jesus

that God can deal with our sins so that

we can be his people

and it's through the shedding of Jesus

blood that in 27 we are told that he is

able to make a strong Covenant with many

to put an end to sacrifice and offering

when Jesus had the Passover supper with

his disciples before the crucifixion he

took the cup and he said drink of it all

of you for this is my blood of the

Covenant which is poured out for many

for the Forgiveness of sins

and so all of the Old Testament

sacrifices they Point into the coming of

a greater sacrifice

once Christ was sacrificed on the cross

there was no longer a need for

sacrifices he had accomplished what the

Old Testament sacrificial system could

only point to which was atonement for

sin

and there's an event in the last week

that was probably confusing and

horrifying to Daniel when he first heard

it

it is of the destruction of the city and

the sanctuary

he had pleaded for God to restore the

city and God heard his request and would

Grant it

why would these two places that were

Central to the life of God's people be

torn down again

is because God meant them to to be for a

short period of time a foreshadow of

what was to come

Israel must understand and look to the

coming of the anointed one spoken of in

verse 27 and see that he would change

everything

they would no longer need the

sacrificial system because the anointed

one would take care of that for them he

would become their sacrifice

they no longer needed an Earthly

Jerusalem because Jesus was repairing a

Heavenly home for them

they didn't need the sanctuary or the

temple because we are to worship at the

feet of Jesus

they must look beyond the Earthly and

understand and see that these things

were meant to represent and point them

to Heavenly realities that are so much

better

the Earthly City and Sanctuary would

only be a stumbling block in that it

would keep them from looking to the

anointed one and keep them from hoping

in God's promises of his new kingdom

that would come later in the future

in Daniel chapter 7 and 8 the waters

were muddy for Daniel

it was hard for Daniel to find Hope for

what he so much wanted was what which

was the restoration of God's people

God's City and God's sanctuary

and I think there is great hope in

chapter 7 and 8 but I don't think that

Daniel could see it

and he was in despair

at the end of each chapter Daniel sees

the vision and then he begins to despair

you can see it in his physical body

in chapter 7 28 he says as for me Daniel

my thoughts greatly alarmed me and my

color change but I kept the matter in my

heart in chapter 8 verse 27 I Daniel was

overcome in Lay sick for some days then

I Rose went about the king's business

but I was appalled by the vision and I

did not understand it

and so in this Vision that Daniel

receives in chapter 9 the city and the

sanctuary they're going to be destroyed

why does chapter 9 not end with Daniel

getting sick or needing to lay down

after his vision like he does in chapter

7 and 8.

I think maybe in chapters seven and

eight Daniel was nearsighted he could

only see the Earthly things and he

couldn't really make out the Heavenly so

in chapter 9 God gives him a pair of

glasses so that Things become clear at

long distances

I think maybe he finally got the message

of hope that God had given to him in

chapter 7 and 8 that he couldn't

understand at that time

maybe in this Vision he sees and

understands that the hope God gave in

chapter 7 and 8 was not ultimately found

in an Earthly City but in a Heavenly one

maybe he realized that no matter how bad

things got for God's people on Earth

God's people could still have great hope

because no matter what happened they had

a great future ahead of them

so let us fix her eyes on our new home

with God in his Heavenly Kingdom that

awaits us

how does the 70 weeks in It Ends by God

putting an end to the desolator

and who is the desolator

he is the deceiver who tempted Adam and

Eve to eat of the fruit of the tree of

the knowledge of Good and Evil

he is our enemy and at the end of 70

weeks God will lock him away forever so

that he can never deceive us again

last year after Christmas our

we put up the uh the Christmas tree fold

out it wasn't in great condition but we

put it in storage and we plan to bring

it out this year whenever Christmas

rolls around again

we don't want to do this with God's word

we don't want to seal up God's Prophecy

in the sense that we store it away

God's word has a purpose and that

purpose will not be fulfilled until the

end of 70 weeks at which time God will

seal it

God sent this message to us to bolster

Our Hope for the long and difficult Road

home

people of God we need to take the fault

out God has given to us and leave it out

all year

we need to be like my girls and keep

opening and closing it open and close it

so that our hope is strengthened on the

journey home

when we are persecuted by the enemy and

the days become dark we can be reminded

of the great home in God's kingdom that

we have awaiting us at the end of 60

let's pray

dear Lord we thank you for being our

faithful our loving and merciful

Covenant God

this journey home is long and it's

difficult but you give us your word to

strengthen our hope in you and your

promises along the way

thank you for caring for us in this way

life in your kingdom is going to be

wonderful no sin

you will be our kind Shepherd and we

will be your loving sheep

the best part will be to gaze Upon Jesus

that will help us to fix our eyes and

hearts upon you and your promises

as we make this long journey home and I

pray all this in Jesus
