You

don't have to uh leave right away. We'd

love to have some more conversation with

you because one of our values here at

Grace City is really being a welcoming

community.

So, we'd love to hear from you, hear

some of your story,

uh and have some conversation with you

today. So, if you're able to, please

stick around. My name is Tim Mills. I'm

one of the elders here at Grace City. Uh

and we've been

going through a series. We started it at

the beginning of the year.

And this series uh was given the theme

or kind of working around the theme of

influencers, influencers. Now, when I

say that, uh and within recent years, it

probably makes you think of of something

in particular, doesn't it? Maybe a

certain role or certain uh job even.

That word has been expanded. That

definition has has grown in recent years

because of social media and its use uh

in the social media platform platforms.

Uh and and an influencer, we know,

right? Is someone uh that influences

someone else in the way that they live,

in the way that they live, or the way

that they act. Their lives, in fact, um

their content, if you will,

is really an advertisement. It's an

advertisement. Purchase this product.

Take this trip. Try this food. Listen to

this music, and so on.

Online influencers project a certain way

of living.

And others, uh the idea is that others

are often attracted to the possibilities

of having a similar experience or living

in the same way, right? We know this.

Well, here's here's why we have this

series.

In a similar way,

the Christian faith, uh a Christian, a

follower of Jesus,

is a person that has been

influenced.

We've been influenced by the life, the

person, and the work of Jesus Christ.

So, through the word of God, through the

work of God in our lives,

we've been captivated. Our hearts, our

minds have been captivated by God's

love, by God's grace.

And we've been changed. So, the

Christian is one that has new life in

Jesus.

We are loved by him. We love him. We

seek to love him.

And we're drawn

to his sacrificial

and perfect love

for us.

You might say our hearts are warmed

by the perfect love of God.

We're known.

We're known by our creator. Our lives

find their purpose. They find meaning in

him. We might ask ourselves, how can

this be? How can this be? How does this

happen?

We've been influenced. We've been

influenced, drawn to

God's love and forgiveness of our sin.

And what does it do? It transforms us.

It changes us. Renews our hearts. Renews

our minds.

It changes the way that we see the

world. It changes the way that we live.

So, the love and mercy of God

defines not just how we live, but what

we live for.

What we live for.

Jesus himself was asked a question kind

of in this theme.

In the same way, how do we live? How do

we live before God? What should we live

like? How should we live a life before

God? What should it look like? And the

interaction, the conversation, it's

actually recorded in the Gospel of

Matthew.

And I'll read it to us. One of them, an

expert in the law,

tested him with this question, "Teacher,

what is the greatest commandment in the

law?"

And Jesus replied,

"Love the Lord your God with all your

heart,

with all your soul, with all your mind.

This is the first and greatest

commandment. And the second is like it.

Love your neighbor

as yourself.

All the law

and the prophets hang

on these two commandments."

Do you see the influence?

Do you see the influence of the Gospel

on our hearts here? This is what we're

being This is what we've been given to

do before and in the Lord Jesus. God

radically works in our lives to help us,

to lead us to do that which we are given

to do and that which we cannot do

unless he helps.

To love the Lord our God with all our

heart, our soul, our minds, our

strength, to love our neighbors as we

love ourselves, we cannot do that well

unless God works within us and helps us

to do that.

This is the core teaching and the ethic

of the Christian faith.

It's what Jesus taught. It's how Jesus

lived. So, the desire of the Christian

that follows Jesus is to influence, to

be an influencer,

through the love of Jesus Christ, to

care for and to serve this hurting world

that we just prayed for, we just prayed

about, to serve this world in and

through the power and the grace of Jesus

Christ.

So, the Christian

believes that the Gospel changes

everything and that it influences every

aspect of our lives. The Christian is an

influencer

marked by the love of Jesus. So, this is

what our series is all about. We're

looking

um through the Gospels. We're walking

towards Easter. And today we will

continue to do that. Let me pray for us

as we uh prepare and read this passage.

God, it's with expectant hearts

that we come before you today.

If we say that, if we believe that, that

the Gospel changes everything, we we

have expectations.

We believe that your word is eternal.

And that it has the power, real power,

to reveal our hearts to us,

to lay them open.

So, we ask that you would speak through

your word, through this passage,

that you would reveal your truth within

it to us.

Jesus, would you help us to see what you

would have us to see? Help us understand

what we would understand, that you would

have us understand.

Perhaps our hearts need to be challenged

by your truth.

So, do that, we ask.

If you reveal any sense uh from us of

any change you would want to bring

within us,

help us even in that. Lead us.

Give us courage to walk towards you in

repentance.

And then we know that as we do that, we

find and experience great grace and

mercy.

So, help us, Lord Jesus. We ask and pray

in your holy name. Amen.

We talked briefly earlier, and we've

been singing some songs referencing uh

referencing this passage. We're going to

be talking about the triumphal entry

today. That's our passage. Now,

traditionally, that is held on Palm

Sunday in a couple of weeks.

Uh come back in 2 weeks and you'll see

that we're going to be looking at

another part in the Gospels uh in the

Gospel of Matthew as Jesus has entered

Jerusalem, as Jesus is there and what's

transpiring before

his

uh crucifixion. But today we read the

triumphal entry. In some ways, let this

prepare our hearts for the next couple

of weeks. Let me read this text to us.

Now, when they drew near to Jerusalem

and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of

Olives,

then Jesus uh sent two disciples,

saying to them, "Go into the village in

front of you, and immediately you will

find a donkey

tied and a colt with her.

Untie them and bring them to me.

If anyone asks anything of you, you

shall say, 'The Lord needs them, and he

will send them at once.'

This took place to fulfill what was

spoken by the prophet, saying, 'Say to

the daughter of Zion, "Behold, your king

is coming to you,

humble

and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the

foal of a beast of burden.'"

The disciples went and did just as Jesus

had directed them.

They brought the donkey and the colt and

put them on there and put on them their

cloaks, and he sat on them. Most of the

crowd spread their cloaks on the road,

and others cut branches from the trees

and spread them on the road.

And the crowds that went before him and

the crowds that followed him were

shouting, "Hosanna to the Son of David.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of

the Lord. Hosanna in the highest."

And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole

city was stirred up, saying, "Who is

this?"

And the crowd said, "This

is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth of

Galilee."

This is the word of the Lord.

For the last few weeks, as we've been

going through the Gospel of Matthew,

and as we prepare our hearts for Holy

Week,

the Gospels, remember, they give us a

first-hand account of Jesus, historical,

what happened. We get to see it. We get

to read about it. We get to hear Jesus

even speaking and teaching. And as we

read the Bible,

we understand more and more as we read

the Gospels, we understand more and more

about just who Jesus is.

And what he accomplished, what he did,

what he set out to do, and what he fully

accomplished in his life.

Two weeks ago during his sermon, Kuni

Iran referenced this verse in Matthew

16.

Uh chapter 16, verse 15. And again,

Jesus was speaking with his disciples

and there's a whole context here. But he

asks them this similar question.

They were, you know, he was asking them,

"Who do people say that I am?" And there

are all these different answers they're

giving. But Jesus asks this of his

disciples, "But who do you

say that I am? Who do you say that I

am?"

And that question

is for each of us, as well.

For as we read the Gospels, as we read

the Bible, as we hear

the story of who Jesus is

and see the claims of who Jesus is, both

that he made himself and that others

made of him,

we're invited to answer this. In fact,

we we have to answer this. We have to

answer this. Who

is Jesus?

And we'll revisit this question later.

In the Gospel accounts of his life, of

Jesus' life, there are a number of

instances, as you read through, where we

see him, you see him perform miracles.

He may heal someone.

But then he goes on to instruct them to

not tell anyone about this. Go, go home.

Don't Don't go out. Don't say anything

about this.

How interesting, how peculiar.

There are times where he performs these

miracles and it's hard to keep it under

wraps. They're so the scale is so large.

But we see this happen. He was to a

degree

keeping things under control, keeping

some control over just how his identity

was being revealed. Who is Jesus?

Why is he tamping this down?

It's because the timing of his mission,

the timing of what he came to do

was important.

There was a reason behind it. And we can

see that now, looking back.

But people must have wondered, "Why

would I not tell someone

if you have given me new life or you've

healed me? Why would I not share that?"

Certainly they'll have questions.

But the timing, the timing was so

important and we'll see that today.

At points in the Gospels, other points

too, Jesus would say things like, "My

time

has not yet come."

Remember when

at the wedding at Cana,

he said to his mother, "Why do you

involve me in this? My time is not yet

come." Before, of course, performing

that miracle. But Jesus was well aware

of timing. He was well aware of how

things were supposed to go. He was in

full control of that.

But in today's text, in today's text

that we just read, we see a major shift

in this tamping down of Jesus' identity

or this

somewhat control over it. As Jesus is

headed into Jerusalem, headed into the

city,

he knows that now the time

has come.

The time has come to set in motion, full

motion, the culmination

of what he has come to do.

The time is now. Jesus has come

to save.

The time

has come. The time was here.

And it was time to reveal himself in

full.

So, what we have in the triumphal entry

is

this interesting spectacle, this

interesting event.

Now, Jesus' disciples had experienced so

much of his

power, his ability, his omniscience,

everything that he is.

They had experienced it.

They had seen some pretty amazing things

in his presence.

Their lives around him.

They had seen him heal people.

They had seen people that were that were

lame have their their strength restored

and get up and walk away.

They had seen him miraculously

multiply food to feed thousands of

people. Like they had They were there.

They saw it.

And they're probably trying to figure

out what is going on.

They had seen him show power over the

elements of the world. They had seen him

in the in the midst of a storm

calm

calm a lake, calm a water. Make it be

silent. Just

What Who is this man? Who is Jesus? What

is going on? They had seen this

firsthand.

And And they had wrestled at times with

what was going on and who is this man?

They'd seen They'd seen his power and

again and again

um

they they were aware of this. Now, here

in this, we may have kind of missed it.

It's a short passage tonight, but

there's so much here.

He tells a couple of his disciples, "Go

into this village." Now, he He's saying,

"Go ahead. Like go and do this and

here's what you're going to find." He's

demonstrating his power, his

omniscience, his understanding of look,

"You're going to find a donkey and a

colt.

Bring them to me. If anyone asks you,

like, "What in the world are you doing

with my animals?" You tell them,

"The Lord needs them and he'll he'll get

them back to you. He'll return them to

you."

Kind of lays out the whole thing that

they might you know, that they would

find. Jesus knew. Again, dem-

omniscience, his his all

um knowing nature, his full command uh

of all things.

Now,

what happens here in this text, too, is

that it's tied These unfolding events,

this this event, this major event in

Jerusalem at the city gate,

uh

it's it's directly tied to prophecies of

old. We see this even mention of of the

donkey and her colt.

Uh

we see the prophecy that's connected to

the Messiah

uh from the book and this is back in an

ancient book, the book of the prophetic

book of Zechariah. So, let's read that

text here. We'll see this in Zechariah

chapter 9.

Rejoice greatly, daughter Zion. Shout,

daughter Jerusalem. See, your king

comes to you, righteous

and victorious,

lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt,

on the foal of a donkey. So, this text

and what's occurring in this, this

event, is being tied back to and

revealing

prophecy that was spoken, taught, and

was known widely

about the coming king, the Messiah.

Jesus here,

in doing this, in sending his disciples

ahead, he's linking himself, he's

revealing himself, he's showing himself

to be

the king that has come, the Messiah.

He's linking himself to this prophecy of

old. The time has come.

The curtain is up. Here's who he is.

It's time for him to proclaim his full

identity and mission. The king

is here.

The king has come.

Your Messiah, oh Israel,

has come. Here he is.

in those ancient times, here's what

makes this event

really

uh interesting.

In those ancient times, this kind of

entrance into a city where you have

uh an important person coming in, you

have a crowd cheering them. Uh this was

common practice

for military rulers, for royal rulers,

for leaders. A king, a ruler might march

out of a city through the city gates or

back into a city. They might march out

with all of their soldiers and a great

show of power and strength, a

demonstration of great might, right? Or

they might return, coming back into the

gates of the city. Imagine this, okay?

With all of the spoils of war. They've

been victorious.

They've conquered and back they come

with prisoners and everything that's

been captured, all the plunder,

everything. They're bringing it back in.

And all the people would see.

All the people would understand. They

would experience their powerful leader.

They would be in awe. They would be in

awe of the might and the power of this

leader, right? You can imagine this.

Uh And the king, you can see the king up

at the front, perhaps, in a chariot, a

war chariot, or maybe riding a strong

war horse. Or if you've read any epic

Thai stories or seen epic films

uh about years gone by, maybe a mighty

war elephant, riding all of the armor.

So, here is this mighty champion, this

mighty ruler, strong, undefeated,

returning into the city in might and

power.

These displays of might and power and

strength

and bravado

still happen today.

They still happen today.

Countries will have military parades to

show off their weaponry,

numerous marching soldiers,

perhaps air shows, which are kind of a

fun outdoor event, but really it's

saying, "Look at our air strength. Look

at our power." Demonstrations of

equipment and machines and capabilities.

All with the purpose of proclaiming,

"Look at our power. Look at our

strength.

Look

and be in awe."

Be in awe.

So, as Jesus enters Jerusalem,

remember, he's pronouncing,

he's revealing himself and saying, "The

king,

your king, Israel, has come.

I am who I am.

I am the Messiah.

The time has come for him, for Jesus, to

reveal and to put his mission

in the final stages of it into action.

But, we don't have a war horse.

We have a small, simple

beast of burden, a donkey.

Not a very fierce animal at all.

A beast of burden.

And we don't see a massive crowd of all

the important and powerful people

spanning the entire city,

all the people of the society, but a

simple gathering, a crowd

of locals

that spread their cloaks down at the

feet of Jesus before and along his path

and behind

into the city.

What is going on?

We read this and we read it in the

context of these ancient practices,

it's quite this spectacle.

Jesus' entrance in Jerusalem becomes a

clear

statement about his own identity as the

Messiah,

the king, the promised one that has come

to bring salvation.

But, he does this in such a way, even

this, even this part of it,

in such a way that demonstrates just how

radically different, radically different

God's plan is for the world.

How radically different God's plan for

salvation is

from the kingdoms

of this world.

Jesus

takes this whole concept

of a military parade and he turns it

upside down. He turns it up on its head

and says, "Here I am, your king,

on a donkey."

He creates, in a way, this radical

political

spectacle.

You see, the Jewish people

were expecting this savior to come.

They were expecting salvation. God had

promised and he would deliver.

But, what they saw as their greatest

enemy was a political

enemy. They were looking for political

salvation.

Remember at this time, Roman the Roman

Empire occupying Jerusalem.

So, the Jewish people were expecting and

looking and waiting for deliverance from

their enemies,

from the Romans.

They were expecting a great and mighty

warrior king to come

on that war horse.

They were expecting and they wanted the

war horse.

So, what Jesus' entrance into Jerusalem

does is it it sets up a paradigm. It

sets up a setting or a way, if you will,

uh for the for all that's about to

unfold. And as we look back on Jesus'

life, we see that everything

that Jesus is going to do

is not the way we think it's going to

play out.

God is bringing salvation, but it's far

more powerful than we can possibly

imagine. Again, we know the rest of the

story. We look back on it today. But,

remember what the people were thinking

now. They were waiting for this Messiah

to come.

They did not know what was going to

transpire.

Friends, God's ways are not our ways.

The powerful king, the promised one, had

come to conquer

our greatest enemy.

Rome was pretty horrible,

but it is not our greatest enemy.

Jesus, the Messiah, had come to

overpower and to conquer sin

and death.

And he would do so. Spoiler alert, if

you're coming back on Easter.

He would do so not through the kind of

strength that the world perceives,

but how?

Through utmost

humility.

Humility.

This event points to Jesus' great

It reveals

his ultimate power, right? As we see

what's hap what's going to happen, as we

reference this text in in Zechariah,

we see prophetically Jesus revealed as

what? The righteous one

and the victorious one.

And a contingent of the crowd calls out,

"Hosanna to the son of David." What is

behind that?

This is both a call for salvation

and adoration or praise, worship for the

king, towards Jesus.

As the people cite, they refer to Jesus'

lineage to King David here,

what they are also doing is

acknowledging

that he is the Messiah, cuz the Messiah

was going to be from the line of David.

So, they're saying that.

They're saying it.

They're acknowledging that. They're

affirming that.

The term Hosanna in Hebrew,

it means save.

Save. Save now. Save, we pray or we cry

out. It's kind of all that.

Hosanna. Hosanna to the son of David.

Hosanna. Save us, Messiah.

In this event,

so we again we see Jesus revealing

himself to be the promised one

and a host of those gathered that day

acknowledging this reality.

They're crying out for the salvation

that God is bringing through Jesus, the

Messiah.

this stood out, okay?

Something's happening at the gate.

It's going to stand out to the city.

There's commotion. There's a man on a

beast of burden.

People are putting their cloaks on the

path. What is going on?

It's standing out.

There's commotion. They're crying out.

"Who is this?"

the text says.

Pastor uh Timothy Keller said this about

the triumphal entry.

As Jesus was entering Jerusalem, he came

and and Keller says this,

"Challenging

societal power structures

while demanding complete

personal surrender."

And Tim Keller said this,

"Either you crown him

or you kill him."

Let me read that again.

Jesus came in this spectacle coming into

Jerusalem

on the donkey, pronouncing himself king

and Messiah, coming in,

challenging uh societal power

structures,

personal

surrender.

We are left with the choice.

We crown him

or we kill him.

You see, the people there had to deal

with Jesus' pronouncement. We too have

to deal

with this reality. Either this man

on this donkey

all those years ago, again,

looking at all the prophecy, looking at

all that Jesus did, looking at the

Gospels, either this man is the Messiah,

he is

who he claims to be, who others claim

him to be,

millions look to as and believing this,

or he's an impostor.

And if he is an impostor, he's at this

time, he's a dangerous one.

He's a dangerous one to the government.

He's a dangerous one to the religious

leaders of that time.

And he has to be dealt with.

So, as Keller

focused our hearts in on this, it leaves

us, left them and leaves us with two

choices.

We either turn to him in faith and we

crown him. And as we crown him, we

denounce our own crown.

Can't be two kings.

Or we kill him.

We have to deny who he is and in

essence, we call for his death.

Friends, as we move closer to Holy Week

and here we are in the season of Lent,

as we move closer into Jerusalem as

Jesus does,

we know

what's going to transpire

when he gets to the city. We know that

he will, just by his presence and who he

is and what he's done and what he's come

to do, we know that he will challenge

the religious leaders

who do see him as an impostor.

They will set about

trying to orchestrate his demise.

And they will succeed.

We know, too, that Jesus will prove to

be an issue for the local Roman

authorities.

Come back in 2 weeks.

We'll look at a conversation that he has

with a Roman a local Roman authority

also asking this question, who are you?

Come back and we'll look at that text.

And they're trying to figure out what do

we do with Jesus?

What do we do with Jesus?

And that's left to us

the same way.

That question.

We know that Jesus will ultimately give

himself.

We know that he will give himself in

crucifixion, taking on the sins, our

sins,

dying for the sins of this world.

We know that the great humility of

Christ demonstrated here

will be triumphant.

We know that he will

uh conquer death itself.

Christ will be shown

as he allows himself to die for us.

Submits himself

to Roman execution on a cross.

It's the humility of Jesus

and his sacrificial death that comes

with overwhelming power.

Conquering sin and death.

We read of this power in the book of

Philippians.

The Apostle Paul writes this.

So, if there is any encouragement in

Christ, any comfort from love,

any participation in the spirit,

any affection and sympathy, complete my

joy by being of the same mind, having

the same love, being in full accord and

of one mind.

Do nothing from selfish ambition or

conceit, but in humility count others

more significant than yourselves. Let

each of you look not only to his own

interests, but also to the interests of

others.

Have this mind among yourselves, which

is yours in Christ Jesus. And listen to

this.

Who though he was in the form of God,

did not count equality with God a thing

to be grasped, but emptied himself

by taking the form of a servant,

being born in the likeness of men and

being found in humble human form, he

humbled himself by becoming obedient to

the point of death, even death

on a cross.

Therefore, God has highly exalted him.

And bestowed on him the name that is

above every name, so that at the name of

Jesus every knee should bow in heaven,

and on earth, and under the earth,

and every tongue confess that Jesus

Christ is Lord to the glory

of God

the Father.

This text

is so rich with instructive

encouragement, admonition for us to walk

in the way of Jesus and to live with

Christ-like humility, right? That first

section. We can get a lot from that. I

wanted to read it a bit more so we'd

have some context.

But we can glean so much towards

personal application, yes. But I really

want us to focus on the latter portion

that's still up on the screen. Jesus'

great humility

and his obedience.

It was his humility that brought a sure

Jesus humbled himself

and took on flesh.

Jesus emptied himself

that we who look to him in faith will be

filled.

Jesus went down to the depths

that we might be lifted up.

Jesus died

that we

might live

in him.

What the world saw as weakness

proved to be the very power of God at

work.

And it's from that place of humility

that we come to Jesus.

That we ourselves come to Jesus.

To crown him as our king is to denounce

our own crown.

We are not king.

There is a king.

King Jesus.

We bring nothing to Jesus but our

brokenness and our sin.

And as we repent

of our brokenness, as we repent of our

sin before a holy God, we receive all

things from him.

That's the radical

nature of the gospel.

It's the inverted beauty of the gospel.

It's what you get when you expect a

warhorse, but your king comes in on a

donkey.

There's an old hymn

called Rock of Ages.

There are a couple of verses that

capture and underscore this this truth

so well.

Let me read it to us as we close.

Not the labors of my hands can fulfill

thy laws' demands.

Could my zeal no respite know? Could my

tears forever flow?

All for sin could not atone.

Thou must save and thou alone.

Nothing in my hand I bring.

Simply to the cross I cling.

Naked come to thee for dress. Helpless

look to thee for grace.

Foul

I to the fountain fly.

Wash me, Savior,

or I die.

This is kind of old English.

It's kind of hard maybe some of these

words or phrases.

It's saying there's nothing we can do

to fulfill the law of God. We we can't

earn God's salvation.

And you know what?

We can't, and that's bad news.

But the good news is that we we must not

try.

Naked we come. Nothing. That turn

We have nothing to bring. Nothing except

our sinful broken hearts. And Jesus

says, "Come.

Come to me. I died for that.

I rode a donkey for that.

I'm here to save you. Come to me."

Let's pray.

Lord God, we know

and we are grateful for the good work

that you have accomplished all those

years ago.

We praise you as our good shepherd

and sacrificial lamb,

humbling yourself,

giving of yourself to die for our sin,

and giving us new and eternal life in

you.

Holy Spirit, work this truth into our

hearts each day. Crush our prideful

hearts and keep us humble before you.

Help us to walk in humility in in your

grace.

And as we seek to love those around us,

help us. We ask and pray that you would

help us

in all of this.

We ask in your holy name, Lord Jesus.

Amen. And one more thing.

I want us to circle back quickly

to this passage in Zechariah again.

Forgot to add this part.

But it's important.

This is later in Zechariah after we read

about that prophetic part about Jesus

coming to the city. And it reads this.

The Lord their God will save his people

on that day

as a shepherd saves his flock.

They will sparkle in his land like

jewels

in a crown.

A good shepherd protects the sheep at

all costs.

How did Jesus save his flock?

Remember in the gospel, the good

shepherd

and the sacrificial lamb are one in the

same.

Jesus gave his life

that we may have life.

The assumed weakness of Christ

ultimately showed the power of God. And

as we continue walking towards Holy

friends, let's turn again and again

and meditate on these truths. With

grateful hearts, let us remember

the cry of the people, "Hosanna,

save us."

And remember that that has been answered

through Jesus Christ, the king, the

the promised one.

Let's sing in response to this truth.

","":"
["GET
