the sermon is going to be in

English

hello everybody hope your weeks have

been

well we're starting a new series today

since we finished Daniel a few weeks ago

and today we're looking at the gospel of

Mark now the gospel of Mark is the

earliest written account of the life of

Jesus It Was Written around 65 ad about

30 years after the death and resur

resurrection of

Christ and actually many people who were

around during Jesus's lifetime were

still around they were still alive when

Mark wrote this gospel and so they were

able to verify the claims made in Mark

and to prevent distortions about

Jesus but why did Mark write down an

account of Jesus's life what caused him

to to write this down before this before

Mark wrote his gospel the news about who

Jesus was would be spread through Word

of

Mouth it would be spread

verbally and as the years grew by there

were less and less

eyewitnesses who could prevent against

untrue stories about Jesus as the years

grew by people who were alive during

Jesus's time began to die and so there

were less eyewitnesses

around so if someone wanted wanted to

make up something untrue about Jesus and

spread it there weren't as many people

around who could prevent it and say no

that's not true I was there I knew Jesus

I knew he didn't fly through the

air so as time Rose as time went on

there arose a new danger there was a new

danger the danger was that people could

just decide who they wanted Jesus to be

they could make up Jesus for themselves

no longer knowing the real Jesus they

could say things like Jesus said follow

me and money or Jesus never said that he

had to be first in our

lives or Jesus said to forgive but he

didn't really mean it he knows that

there are some things in life that we

can never

forgive so people were able to make up

things about Jesus that weren't

true and so Mark was the first written

account of Jesus's life to show us who

Jesus really was to show us who Jesus

really is not someone who is made up but

Jesus as he

is the gospel of Mark tells us who Jesus

is what Jesus did what Jesus really said

what Jesus really

taught so that we can align our

perception of Jesus closer to the

reality closer to the reality of who he

is and we also we also need this

today if you would not call yourself a

Christian and you're here today maybe

exploring Christianity the best place to

start is

Jesus is Jesus who he says he is this is

the fulcrum everything the order of the

whole world our entire existence depends

on the answer to this

question is Jesus who he says he

is if he isn't well there's no reason to

follow anything the Bible says but if it

is if Jesus is who he says it is he is

and we have no choice but to respond to

it if Jesus is who he says he is it

changes

everything if you're a Christian and

you're here today maybe thinking oh yes

I know Jesus I know who he is I know

he's the son of God let this be an

opportunity as we go through the gospel

of Mark let this be an opportunity to

really know Jesus many of us Christians

and non-christians alike would prefer to

meet Jesus on our own terms we would

prefer a Jesus that isn't so radical a

Jesus who says I understand you care

about fitting in with your friends and

co-workers

it's okay for you not to talk about me

when other people are

around or a Jesus who says you're not so

bad you don't kill people you don't

steal from other people sure you're

prideful sure you get angry easily but

you're nowhere near as bad as those

people it's

okay but you know a Jesus that we make

up cannot change us because a Jesus that

we make up cannot challenge us cannot

contradict us can't teach us can't lead

us in fact we can't trust a Jesus that

we make up why because a Jesus that we

make up is is just

us the only way we can be truly

transformed and renewed the only way we

can have real hope in life is if we have

the real Jesus if we encounter Jesus not

not on our terms but on his terms and

this is what we have here in the gospel

of Mark so who ises Jesus Jesus say he

is let's read the text Mark 1: 1- 20 and

let's find out

together the beginning of the Gospel of

Jesus Christ the son of God as it is

written in Isaiah the prophet behold I

send my messenger before your face who

will prepare your way the voice of one

crying in the wilderness prepare the way

of the Lord make his path

straight John appeared baptized ing in

the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism

of repentance for the Forgiveness of

sins and all the country of Judea and

all Jerusalem were going out to him and

were being baptized by him in the River

Jordan confessing their

sins now John was clothed with camel's

hair and wore a leather belt around his

waist and ate locusts and wild honey and

he preached saying after me comes he who

is mightier than I the strap of whose

sandals I am not worthy to stoop down

and and

untie I have baptized you with water but

he will baptize you with the Holy

Spirit in those days Jesus came from

Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by

John in the Jordan and when he came up

out of the water immediately he saw the

heavens being torn open and the spirit

descending on him like a

dove and a voice Came From Heaven you

are my beloved Son with you I am well

pleased the spirit immediately drove him

out into the Wilderness and he was in

the wilderness 40 days being tempted by

Satan and he was with the wild animals

and the Angels were ministering to

him now after John was arrested Jesus

came into Galilee proclaiming the gospel

of God and saying the time is fulfilled

and the kingdom of God is at hand repent

and believe in the

gospel passing alongside the Sea of

Galilee he saw Simon and Andrew the

brother of Simon casting a net into the

sea for they were

fishermen and Jesus said to them follow

me and I will make you become Fishers of

Men and immediately they left their Nets

and followed

him going on a little further he saw

James the son of zebede and John his

brother who were in The Boat mending the

Nets and immediately he called them and

they left their father zebede in the

boat with the hired servants and

followed him this is the word of

God have you ever been woken up abruptly

before you're sound asleep and dreaming

when suddenly the door to your room is

thrown open and a bright light shines

full in your face a voice breaking in to

your dream world shouts wake up get up

stop sleeping and then all of a sudden

your face is splashed with cold water

it's time to stop dreaming and to face

the most important day of your life has

that ever happened to any of

us have we ever been woken up like that

before this is what the opening of

Mark's gospel is like it's a great way

to start and mark is telling us that

this is what John the Baptist was like

to the Jewish people of that time the

Jewish people had been living under

Roman rule for a number of years they

were waiting for a sign from God to

bring them a leader to lead them against

the

Romans but they weren't expecting a

prophet telling them to

repent some people thought John the

Baptist was mad but here he is splashing

cold water all over them telling them to

get ready for the greatest moment in

Jewish history the greatest moment in

world

history what is that greatest moment

well we see it in the opening verse of

this book the beginning of the Gospel of

Jesus Christ the son of God what we see

in this chapter are three things we

learn about the king we learn about the

king's call and we learn about the

king's cost so Mark opens with the

beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ

the son of God and here mark is telling

us something amazing about who Jesus is

he is the

Christ this word Christ might not mean

very much to us

today in fact some of us here might

think Christ is Jesus's last

name but what Christ actually means

originally is Anointed one the anointed

king Jesus is the king what does this

mean well he's the son of God in the

next few verses Mark tells us of a

prophecy he

says as it is written in Isaiah I will

straight this is a prophecy from Isaiah

40 that says someday God himself God

himself will come to

Jerusalem it says say to the towns of

Judah here is your god see The Sovereign

Lord comes with power and he rules with

a mighty arm what Isaiah 40 is saying is

one day God himself will come to

Jerusalem and before he does he will

send a messenger to prepare the way for

him and here he is Mark says that this

messenger is John the

Baptist which means that Mark is saying

that Jesus is God himself Jesus is The

Sovereign Lord spoken of in Isaiah

40 God himself the Creator The Sovereign

ruler and judge over all the Earth the

god of the Old Testament Yahweh himself

has come to Earth in the form of Jesus

Christ this is what Mark is saying Jesus

Christ is the

king God himself God himself the all

powerful allmighty infinite and

invulnerable and transcendent

has now become vulnerable and knowable

in the form of a

human God is so loving and so intent on

our Salvation that he did The Impossible

and he broke through the wall between

Perfection and imperfection and became a

human it is the history shattering world

view altering hope inducing life

transforming event in history that

everything for one what this means is is

that unlike every other religion that

says you have to do something to get to

God in Buddhism and Hinduism you you

have to have your good deeds outweigh

your bad deeds in Islam in order to

reach the Divine you have to refrain

from doing evil to do good works to have

a contrite heart to feed the needy and

orphans quoting directly from the

Quran Christian

is the only religion that says instead

of you having to find God God himself

became human in order to come find

you what's this is called the doctrine

of the

Incarnation God became human in Jesus

Christ if we really believe this if we

really dwell on this and sit with it it

really does have the power to change our

hearts and our lives how's that well for

one

it can completely transform our reason

for

living every one of us has something

that's driving us we all have a reason

for why we wake up in the morning there

is something in our hearts that

motivates us and drives us and one very

common motivation that I think we all

can relate to is

fear the fear of not being good enough

of not proving ourselves the fear of not

being

enough fear can drive us to have

inordinate need for

control it can drive us to hold on to

our money it can drive us to be people

Pleasers it can drive us towards working

late and long hours in order for us to

have status or achievement so that we

can feel that we are good

enough fear is one of the biggest

motivators and fear is what happens when

we are

unable or unwilling to trust

God but the

Incarnation that God himself became

flesh means that God himself Has Come

Close God has come to us he has given

himself to us and so now it's possible

for us to live not from fear but from

gratitude and

confidence it is possible to live from a

heart that know knows that we have God

and that we can trust God and what that

does is it demolishes our

fear and in its place we can have

gratitude knowing that we have God and

that God has come to us because he knows

that we could never reach him he knows

that we can't get to him and so he came

to

us it gives us a whole new reason for

doing everything the Incarnation the

fact that God became came flesh gives us

tremendous hope for the present that God

himself is with

us when Mark quotes the prophecy in

Isaiah he's saying that the ancient hope

of Israel the ancient hope of Israel

that God would one day send a king to

make all things right again and that

this king would Heal the World of all

the death and disease and Brokenness

Mark is saying that that King that King

is Jesus and that King has

come so who's the king it's

Jesus have you ever thought about Jesus

in this way

before that he is not just the one you

trust in to forgive you of your sins but

that he is your

king do you think of Jesus as your king

the one to whom that we owe

everything that that's who he

is and so that we see that in response

to John's preaching all the people are

confessing their sins and being baptized

Mark tells us that John proclaims

repentance for the Forgiveness of sins

and then later in verse 14 after Jesus

himself is baptized we see Jesus's first

words in

Mark we see Jesus's first

sermon he says

the time is

fulfilled the kingdom of God is at

hand repent and believe in the

gospel and then we see Jesus Calling to

Simon and Andrew telling them follow me

and I will make you Fishers of

Men what we see here is we see the

king's

call and what is extraordinary about

this call is that during those days

rabbis and teachers did not go after

their students

they did not seek their students out

it's similar today to how if you want to

go to university in Thailand you have to

take exams to see if you're able to go

to the university that you want to here

you seek out we seek out the

university but what Jesus does here is

unheard of he calls the

disciples he goes after

them and what is Jesus's main

message the kingdom of God is at hand

repent and believe the

gospel now the gospel if you've been

coming to gra City for any amount of

time you will have some familiarity with

this

word what does gospel

mean it means good

news during this time during Mark's time

the way that this word gospel was used

was it referred to a life-changing

history shap shaking event not just any

old news in those days it was used to

refer to a

victory does anyone know how the first

marathon

started any any runners over

here there's actually a place in Greece

called

marathon and in 490 BC when the Persians

invaded Greece there was a great battle

that took place called The Battle of

Marathon the Greek were outnumbered but

Against All Odds they defeated Persia

and they

won and in order to let everyone know

about the victory there was a runner who

ran from the battlefield to Athens to

let them know the good news the good

news that goes something like this we

have fought for you and we won and now

you are free you are no longer slaves

you're

free the gospel is is something has been

done for you an event has taken place

and it forever changes our

status something has happened outside of

us something has happened in history and

because of this because of this thing

that has happened you are changed

forever hear this carefully the gospel

is not good

advice the gospel is not I'm going to

change my life I'm going to be a better

person I'm going to come to church I'm

going to read my Bible I'm going to

spend time with God I'm going to give to

charity I'm going to serve I'm going to

do good

things it's possible to do all of those

things that I just said every single one

of those things and to not believe the

gospel that that is not the gospel the

gospel is something has been

done something has happened completely

outside of our control outside of your

control outside of my control this is

the life that Jesus lived and died for

you so that you may be

saved I've said this before but if

someone asks you are you a Christian and

you respond or think to yourself I'm

trying to be I'm trying to be a

Christian if you say that if we any of

us say that we don't understand the

gospel because the gospel is not about

what we do it is not not about what we

do it's not about what we do for God it

is about what God has done for us in

Jesus Christ and if we understand the

gospel if someone asks us are you a

Christian you'll have so much confidence

yet humility it will be an unshakable

confidence because it is about what

Jesus has done for you and yet yet you

will be humble knowing that wow Jesus

did this for for me for me of all people

wow the Son of God had to live and die

me when you hear advice about someone

telling you the way you should live you

should be honest set a good example to

people around you you should help people

out when they ask for it how does it

make us feel how do we feel when we hear

good

advice often times it feels crushing

doesn't it sure it might feel

inspirational but it's also crushing

like a burden is placed on us here is

the checklist and we have to do all

these things to feel that we're

okay that's good advice believing the

gospel is completely different it feels

as if the burdens have been lifted and

have fallen off of us we are no longer

slaves we are free because of what Jesus

has done for us do you believe

this that you are free not because of

anything that you have done but because

of everything that Jesus has

done the gospel is that God accepts us

not because of our own actions but

because of Christ's actions not on the

basis of what we have done or

performed but on what Jesus has

accomplished in history for

us so the king's call is to repent and

believe the gospel but there's something

else here is what

if we look at Jesus's words in verse

15 we'll also notice that he says the

kingdom of God is at

hand why does he say

this why does he link repenting and

believing the gospel with this idea

about the kingdom of

God well for one we've seen that Jesus

is the king and so it's only

fitting for a king to be king of a

kingdom but this idea of

the kingdom of God also links us back to

Genesis where Adam and Eve were in the

garden links us back to the beginning of

history in the garden Adam and Eve were

in Paradise there was no death no

disease the relationships with each

other with god with nature with

themselves it was all perfect it was a

perfect world it was a perfect world

without sin and God was the king but

then what

happened in Genesis 3 we see that Adam

and Eve chose to go their own way to be

their own Kings in other words what we

see is

self-centeredness and I don't think we

have to look very hard to see that every

single one of us that we have gone the

way of Adam and Eve we have let

self-centeredness rule Our Lives that's

why our driving motivator is fear

because we are are concerned with

ourselves we're concerned with not being

good enough we're concerned with not

being enough we're concerned with being

perfect we're concerned with having

control or Comfort or power and so we

use our money to get our our money and

our resources to get what we want to get

what we

desire or self-centeredness centeredness

also Al causes us to be people Pleasers

we care about what people

think we're very helpful we're unable to

say no and draw boundaries why because

we want to be liked and accepted and so

we compare ourselves to those around us

to see if we measure up to see if we're

good enough Thailand's beauty industry

generated about $6.3 billion do just a

few years ago that represents almost 25%

of asan countries total

sales one article says that Thailand is

primed to become Asian's Beauty Hub

there have been several studies that

explore social media use and narcissism

with conclusions that say social media

leads to

self-centeredness rather what I think is

social media only just exposes our

innate

self-centeredness in January of this

year over

70% 70% of Thailand's population had

social media accounts that's about 52

million

accounts self-centeredness is one of the

primary motivators of our lives today

just like it was with Adam and Eve and

there's nothing more miserable than self

tenderness right being absorbed with

ourselves how am I doing how am I

feeling how are people treating me am I

proving myself are people disrespecting

me am I being treated

justly why do we have wars why do we

have family breakdown why do we have

relationships exploding it's because of

self-centeredness when we decided to be

our own Kings everything fell apart

psychologically physically socially

spiritually it all fell

apart but the good news of the Gospel of

the kingdom of God is that Jesus the

King has come to make all things right

to restore us to restore the world to

make it perfect to make everything all

right and when we come under the healing

kingship of

Jesus everything begins to

heal Revelation 21:22 says that under

Jesus's kingship

there will be a day where death is no

more disease is no more it is the end of

suffering no more pain no more crying or

Mourning it is the new heavens and the

new Earth this is what the kingdom of

God is and Jesus

says it has

begun this is what Mark is about verse

one the beginning of the Gospel of Jesus

Christ it's only the beginning

doesn't that sound amazing wouldn't you

want

that now one last

thing notice that when Jesus Calls the

first four

disciples they immediately leave their

Nets and their father and they follow

Jesus now we know from the gospels that

the disciples did fish again we also

know that they continued their

relationship with their parents they

never they didn't just just ignore their

parents for the rest of their lives but

the point here the point that Jesus is

making is I want priority over your

career I want priority over your family

I want priority over everything I must

be number one in your life Tim Keller

puts it this way resembling Jesus

pleasing Jesus serving Jesus and knowing

Jesus must become the Supreme passions

of Our Lives According To

Jesus everything else comes

second if we claim to follow Jesus and

yet we're ashamed or scared of what

other people might think if slash when

they know about what we believe what

does that say about how we view

Jesus we claim to follow Jesus yet

ignore choose to disobey what he teaches

what does that say about how we view

Jesus

Jesus says I must come first everything

else is second that's what it means to

follow Jesus Jesus is saying I will not

be used if there are any conditions on

our obedience or following Jesus if we

say that Jesus I'll obey you

if I'll obey you if things go right if

my family is okay if things are okay

with my career if we say I'll Follow You

Jesus if

our real master what we actually worship

is actually just whatever is on the

other side of that if because that thing

is what we're really after and we're

only using Jesus to get to our

goal if we're going to follow Jesus

Jesus must be the goal Jesus is the true

King Jesus is the true king that we have

been looking for and everything else the

cost of following Jesus is

everything but there is nothing better

than

this what Jesus promises is beyond what

anything or anyone else can promise it

is a wonderful

Journey look at what he does with his

disciples he tells them I will make you

become Fishers of Men as they follow him

as they're in the process of following

him he is going to transform them he's

going to change them

fishes of men now we might think we know

what this

means in biblical imagery the sea and

water is actually a place of chaos and

death and darkness and coldness that's

what the sea represents in the Bible it

represents the kingdom of this world and

darkness and what makes it chaotic is

self-centeredness what Jesus is saying

when he says I will make you Fishers of

Men is I will make you you someone who

knows how to draw people out of the

kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of

Light have you ever met someone who is

so content and so happy so full of light

that you can just tell that they aren't

thinking about themselves at all they're

not thinking about how to use you

they're they're only just thinking about

you have you ever met someone who just

serves you who isn't worried about

what's in it for them or how you view

them rather they just just just care

about

you CS Lewis says that if you meet a

humble person probably all that you will

notice is that they were cheerful and

intelligent and they took a real

interest in what you had to

say someone who is truly humble isn't

thinking less of themselves they don't

put themselves down but they're just

thinking of themselves less and someone

who is like that someone who has been

healed of their own self

self-centeredness can now turn around

and begin to draw others into the light

of serving God and serving

others following Jesus is a wonderful

Journey that completely transforms us as

we follow

him look at what the disciples became

look at Simon also known as

Peter a hot-tempered

fisherman who often times spoke and

acted before he

thought Peter the same guy who vowed to

never leave Jesus yet abandon him in his

last moments but because of Jesus

because Jesus transformed him Peter

became one of the great pillars of the

church in Peter's last moments he died

as a martyr Standing Tall and brave

Jesus transformed him or look at Thomas

another one of Jesus's disciples he was

given the nickname doubting Thomas and

yet at the end of Thomas's life he takes

the gospel to India and he is martyred

there he dies for what he believes in he

dies for Jesus he has been rescued from

the kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom

of Light so much so that even death

could not take him away from Jesus he

was so confident and sure of his hope in

Jesus Jesus transformed

him this ordinary group of people

because they followed Jesus Jesus

transformed them into some of the most

remarkable and dynamic people the world

has ever known Fishers of

Men now if Jesus can do that with them

imagine what he can do with you and

me Jesus says follow me and he takes us

on the Journey of a

lifetime he says I want you to obey me

don't turn to the left don't turn to the

right but put me first always do my will

keep praying keep obeying my will stick

with me don't give up and go through

everything that will happen to you in

life sometimes he takes us to places

that seem like a dead end things that

don't make sense but look at Jesus he

went to the greatest dead end and that's

how we save the

world and this is the key following

Jesus has a cost but what Jesus promises

is far beyond anything else this world

can

offer and the only way to do this the

only way to follow Jesus it's by

believing the gospel we have to see that

everything Jesus has called us to do he

himself has already

done Jesus calls James and John to leave

their father in the boat and follow him

and when you see that when we see that

we also have to see that Jesus Christ

already left his father's throne in

heaven

why later he's going to lose his father

in a much deeper and painful way on the

cross why it goes back to the gospel

something has happened in history a

battle has been fought and Christ has

won Jesus has set us free we are no

longer slaves slaves to our own

self-centeredness slaves to

sin on the cross Jesus Christ defeated

the dark powers of sin and death and of

this world and by his resurrection he

has already began remaking the world and

healing the world the King has come

and if you give yourself to him if you

believe in him trust him obey his

teachings don't turn to the left or to

the right but Walk With

Jesus there's no telling what he can do

with you he is the king our hearts have

been longing

for Christ's kingship will not crush us

it is the only thing that will set us

free the King has come let us rejoice

let's pray

Lord Jesus we thank you Lord there's

there's no way we could ever be Greatful

enough for what you've done in our

lives Lord we pray that you would meet

us today in the ways that we need to be

met by you we thank you that you are our

King Lord Jesus help us to see the

beauty and what you've done help it to

help us to see your beauty Lord so that

we may let go of the things we're

holding on to and to walk into your arms

pray this in Jesus
