your heart

and mind and challenge your

thinking and ask yourself what part of

my life needs the restorative work that

only God can

bring who does God say we

pray in your holy name

amen our text today is taken from the

10th chapter of

Mark and K Vicki will read In tha both

languages are on the slides as well

we'll be reading Mark

10: 32 through

45 this is the word of

God okay thank

you fore

speee

fore

foree

for

this is the word of

God a number of years

ago at the Bangkok art and culture

center and I and I saw an art

installation

there and this was a work by a a Thai

artist

and the artwork itself consisted of a

number of small images of the

Buddha arranged in rows in front of a

computer

monitor and the the screen the computer

was flashing images of commercial

advertisements had images is like sale

and 50% off and buy

now and it had pictures of purses and

shoes and cars and other items for

sale and images were also projected up

on the wall of the gallery so the

viewers were also subjected to these

ads

and the title of the piece was

materialism in the artist statement the

artist had written

this no longer are we known for who we

are but for what we

have now this artist was questioning the

concepts of of social status and

possessions of social standing and

identity and all of these things both

you know identity being even self-

perceived and socially defined as

well you know in today's world uh social

media media platforms have given us the

ability to curate and create digital

personas so we have the tools to share

our lives with others more than ever

before you it can be really special to

be be able to share photos and stories

right like to share what's happening in

our lives with other

people but one interesting aspect about

social media is that it can reveal so

much about who we

are or at least who we think we are and

who we say we are person

but even what society says about

us in this passage of the Gospel of

Mark Jesus is his disciples are walking

to

Jerusalem you know all through his time

with the disciples and even now Jesus

has been teaching them and he's been

using Parables and he's been using

stories to teach

them but in this passage Jesus speaks

very clearly and very directly about

what is going to happen to him in the

coming

days

the son of man will be delivered over to

the chief priests and the scribes and

they will condemn him to death and

deliver him over to the Gentiles and

they will mock him and spit on him and

fog him and kill him and after three

days he will

rise

for this is a tumultuous time in the

life of Jesus and his

disciples the text says they were amazed

at him at his

teaching

and those that were following were

afraid and it's in the midst of this

difficult setting that we read about

James and John's

request and it seems so out of

place Jesus is their teacher their

leader their

Messiah and yet they say to him teacher

we want you to do for us whatever we ask

of

you it seems audacious right and

demanding it seems so out of place

doesn't it

culturally relationally I mean disciples

making demands of their Rabbi their

teacher and the timing of this

too Jesus has just been very clear about

the suffering and death he is about to

face and they come to him with this

self-focused demand

for yeah Jesus is patient with them and

and asks what do you want me to do for

you and their question reveals the

self-centered heart of

humanity

grant us to sit one at your right hand

and one at your left hand in

glory to put this in modern

language Jesus when you come in to your

rule and Reign forever would you elevate

us to positions of power and

honor

James and John the sons of zebede are

asking to be elevated to positions of

importance and

Prestige they're essentially asking to

be honored and placed in in levels or

position of cultural respect and

power it's hard to read this

right it's hard to believe

it I mean right when Jesus is being

vulnerable and forthright about the

great suffering and death he would

experience

I mean two of his closest followers

right then say you know Jesus wow that

sounds really difficult for you but can

we talk about our

future yeah we may just not believe this

right as we read

it that they would do

this and the text says that the other

disciples were indignant as

well but maybe you know honestly not so

much because of the great disrespect

showed towards Jesus but because they

likely too desired this

yes James and John's request is wrong on

so many levels but it reveals so much

about the human

heart our hearts our own

hearts for we do the same

we self- Elevate and

self-promote we curate our own personas

and we judge others as less than or even

greater than

us we can't help

it that is the depth of the sinful human

heart we place our ourselves in certain

positions in society and work to sustain

and grow our personal

brand so Jesus goes on to explain and

with a lot of patience and kindness I

might add just how wrong they

are

he lovingly points them to the truth of

who he is and what he came to

do he flips everything around to show

the truth about who we are at light of

the

Gospel in verse 42 Jesus explains the

values of the world in regard to social

standing Power Authority and

reputation rulers exercise their

authority over

others he uses the phrase lordy it over

them

which speaks of ruling uh with with a

boastful and prideful

heart and here J Jesus turns it all

around he says but it shall not be so

among

you but whoever would be great among you

must be your servant and whoever would

be first among you must be slave of all

for even the son of man came not to be

served but to serve and to give his life

as a ransom for

many so what are we to make of all of

this

I mean how do we apply this what Jesus

is teaching to our own

Hearts how do we apply the truths of the

Gospel to our own

lives well first we seek to understand

and to honor Jesus for who he

is

in and through the gospel we're called

to be Servants of

others we're called towards humility and

and

servanthood and this is so difficult for

us because we're hardwired towards self-

focus and

self-preservation

but at the heart of the Christian faith

is a is a turning from

ourselves and turning towards Jesus and

the Salvation that he

brings you see the teaching Christian

faith is that we need Jesus to change

our

hearts

to turn our self-focused hearts towards

him in

faith so we have to be humbled we have

to be at a a place of humility to come

Jesus we have to realize that we're

we're not all that we think we

are in fact we're worse than we

think in reality we're prideful and

self-centered and like James and John

we're we're focused on elevating

self not humbling ourselves before

Jesus so what it means to have faith in

Jesus is to come to him in humility and

receive

him humble yourself before him and

him confessing our sin before God and

receiving forgiveness and new

life so that is what we do as as we step

into faith in Jesus so

secondly the other way that we grow and

move forward in Christ is to is to rely

on the ongoing work of God in bringing

change to our hearts

see we have the perfect example of

humility in Jesus

Christ and we need him to help us live

humbly before him and

others in the letter to the church at

Philippi we we read this n

Philipp yeah uh 2

3-8

do nothing from selfish ambition or

conceit but in humility count others

more significant than yourselves Let

each of you look not only to his own

interests but also to the interests of

others have this mind among yourselves

which is yours in Christ Jesus who

though he was in the form of God did not

count equality with God a thing to be

grasped but emptied himself by taking

the form of a servant being born

in the likeness of men and being found

in human form he humbled himself by

becoming obedient to the point of death

even death on a

cross

it's clear that we need the work of God

through the Holy

Spirit to follow

Jesus

we can't live like this through our own

power we don't want to live like this

through our own

desire we need the work of God through

the Holy Spirit to follow Jesus

Christ

friends let us cling to him as he

reveals our ongoing need of

him and let us submit to him with Humble

Hearts for God came to give himself for

us and to lead us to serve and love

others in his

name let's

pray God our good

father we thank you for sending Jesus to

save this broken and hurting

World help us to see the ways that we

build ourselves

up the ways we Elevate ourselves above

others the ways we neglect those in

need and in your mercy humble

us bring us again and again to the place

where we see our clear need of

you expose our prideful thoughts and

actions reveal to us our sins and help

us confess them to

you being reminded that you're the one

who forgives the one who loves the one

who gave gave himself for

us and God we ask that you would help us

individually and as your

church to seek to serve those around us

with your love and grace and through

your

power

and we ask all of this through your Holy

Name
