you might find it a little comical

that like who's this guy going up and F

back and forth back and forth back and

forth so here we are in the New Year our

staff is traveling many people some

wonderful news you know of course Phil

and Rebecca in Indonesia getting married

Ando so some our staff traveling so um I

love I love getting to do

this but just to explain if you're

wondering why is this guy up you know

man this church needs more staff members

right so uh but if you'd like to

help if you want to help lead worship

please come and talk but listen we're so

glad that you're here if you're visiting

welcome I understand some of you uh your

first week in

Thailand from Kansas I believe right

coming all the way from Kansas where the

weather is a little bit different right

now isn't it a little bit you the

weather is a little bit different in Rat

Kansas and I got now now not so we are

going to be continuing uh a sermon

series that we began last year okay so

here we are in the first the first

Sunday of the new year and we're

beginning uh continuing with uh a sermon

series that we began in the gospel of

Mark the gospel of

Mark so my name is Tim uh Tim Mills and

I look forward to speaking with a number

of you after the service and getting to

know you but again if this is your first

Sunday we want to say

welcome

so if you want to listen to the sermon

In tha this

evening kunata will be translating into

Thai and I will be preaching in English

so we're going to continue with this

series and as we enter into this new

year I want to kind of set a base for us

okay because here we are in a new year

right here we are in a new year and I

mentioned a few things at Grace City you

know some things that we really hold to

and cling to and I want to I want to

reiterate those I want to speak about

those

again here at this community we we

believe in and we cling to we cling to

the grace of God in all things in all

things

so as we come into this New Year let us

rest in that let us remember and rest in

the truth that God God does not

change the years go

by right they bring many

changes but the Eternal God is Sovereign

over all things and God does not

change God created all things god holds

all things together

through his goodness by his power so

with this new year

friends however you're feeling

today however you're feeling today

whatever you're going through right now

in life whatever is on your heart

perhaps even heavy on your heart the

invitation for us

today is to

rest to rest to to rest in The God Who

made you created you gave you

life the god that loves which we've sung

about we've read

about the God that loves you with a

faithful

love and the god that does not change so

these things God's love God's presence

that God made us that doesn't that

doesn't change so we rest in that we

cling to that we cling to that so Mark

the gospel of Mark

now Mark is one of the four gospels that

we have in the Bible in the New

Testament right and you know in the

gospels what we get in the gospels is is

like a

window it's like a window where we get

to peer into the life and the work of

Jesus

Christ and so they give us this window

they give us this picture if you will

through which to view the person and

power of Jesus the character of Jesus

and a lens almost like glasses right a

lens through which to view our own lives

in light of the Gospel so in the gospel

we see

Jesus and when we see Jesus we get to

look at our own

lives through the lens of of who Jesus

is what Jesus has done so as we read the

Bible

today it allow it to examine your heart

and your mind

now you know we talk about reading the

Bible right have you read your Bible

what are you reading in your Bible these

days we talk about that right we talk

about reading your Bible but here's the

reality the Bible reads

us the Bible reads us the word of God

God reads us what do I mean by that the

truth that we encounter in the word of

God has the

power to examine our hearts it examines

us it challenges us it encourages us it

guides us it guides our hearts our minds

in the truth of God so before we even

get in to the Bible we're going to pray

for that we're going to ask that God

through his Spirit would do that very

thing would soften our hearts would open

us to the reading of his word and allow

the Bible the word of God to read our

hearts so let me pray for us let's

pray holy God we we come before you

today as a people that live in a

wonderful and yet fractured and broken

world you know this world Our Lives God

are filled with great joy and beauty and

yet they're also punctuated with

darkness and

pain and

suffering help us help us to know you

help us to

believe that you know us better than we

know

ourselves help us to

remember help us to remember that you

Lord Jesus entered

into our

suffering and the heights of joy and the

depths of Despair that we

experience they're not unknown to

you even at this very moment right now

you know the thoughts occupying our

minds the emotions ruling our hearts

Lord God

please meet us in this very place at

this time right

now and encourage our hearts through

your Eternal and good word we pray and

ask this in your Holy Name Lord Jesus

amen so I'm going to give you a preview

you know when you before you watch a

movie you get sometimes you watch the

trailer you watch the preview I'm going

to give you a quick preview of what

we're going to

read then we're going to read all of

Mark 7 then we're going to talk about it

we're going to talk about it

so here's what we're going to look at

today the seventh chapter of the Gospel

of Mark gives us a window it gives us a

firsthand account of three

interactions that Jesus had with others

three interactions so today we have

these three vignettes these three

Windows these three

stories the first is with a group of

Pharisees and

scribes these were Jew Jewish religious

leaders and officials and they come to

Jesus with questions so we'll get to see

what are their questions we'll find out

the second interaction is with a syrop

phenician woman and she's

described as a gentile what is a gentile

you may know or you may not know a

gentile is a person at that time and

today too that is not Jewish not of the

Jewish line and not Jewish

so this woman is a gentile outside of

the Jewish

people but she comes to Jesus and she

comes to Jesus in a state of

desperation why what is she what is she

at her at her end about well find

out and the third encounter is with a

man now this man the Bible Mark 7

describes as being deaf he he could not

hear he did not have the sense of

hearing he was also mute which means

that he could not communicate he could

not speak so he was deaf and he was

mute and so these three groups of

people encountered

Jesus and we get to peer into this these

historic interactions these

happened these events happened they were

recorded and we get to look into them

and we get to understand and we get to

see the authority

the power and the mercy of God at work

in the person and work of Jesus

Christ I'm going to be reading and I'll

read through the gospel in its entirety

it's a lot chapter 7 it's long but I'll

read it quickly and we'll go back

through it and and perhaps this week

maybe this week you can read it again

maybe tonight before you go to bed read

through Mark 7 again and say God we got

to look look at this today in church

what are you teaching me about this what

are you showing me and maybe this week

you read it

again all right that wasn't in my notes

that's why I'm I told chaa i' stick on

my notes

this is The Gospel According to Mark

chapter

7 now when the Pharisees gathered to him

with some of the scribes who had come

from Jerusalem they saw that some of his

disciples ate with hands that were

defiled that is unwashed for the

Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat

unless they wash their hands properly

holding to the tradition of the

elders and when they came from the

market

place they do not eat unless they wash

and there are many other Traditions that

they observe such as washing the cups

and pots and copper vessels and dining

couches and the Pharisees and the

scribes they asked him they asked Jesus

why do your disciples not walk according

to the tradition of the elders but they

eat with defiled

hands and he Jesus said to them well did

Isaiah prophesy of you

Hypocrites as it is written this people

honors me with their lips but their

heart is far from me in vain do they

worship me teaching as doctrines the

Commandments of

men you leave the Commandment of God and

hold to their TR to the tradition of

men and he Jesus said to them you have a

fine way of rejecting the Commandment of

God in order to establish your

tradition for Moses said honor your

father and your mother and whoever

reviles father or mother must surely die

but you said if a man tells his father

or his mother whatever you would have

gained from me is Corbin that is given

to God then you no longer permit him to

do anything for his father or mother

thus making void the word of God by your

tradition that you have handed down and

many such things you

do and he called the people to him again

and he said to them hear me all of you

and understand there's nothing outside a

person that is by going into him can

defile him but the things that come out

of of a person are what defile him and

when he had entered the house and left

the people his disciples asked him about

about the

parable and he said to

them then are you also without

understanding don't you see that

whatever goes into a person from outside

cannot defile him since it enters not

his heart but his stomach and is

expelled thus he declared all foods

clean and he said to them what comes out

of a person is what defiles them for

from within out of the heart of man

comes evil thoughts

sexual immorality theft murder adultery

coveting wickedness deceit sensuality

Envy slander Pride foolishness and all

these evil things come from within and

they defile a

person and he from there

arose and went away to the region of Ty

and

sidon and he entered a house and he did

not want anyone to know yet he could not

be hidden but immediately a woman whose

little daughter had an unclean Spirit

heard of him and came and fell down at

his feet now the woman was a gentile a

syrop phenician by birth and she begged

him to cast The Demon out of her

daughter and he said to her let the

children be fed first for it is not

right to take the children's bread and

throw it to the

dogs but she answered Himes Lord yet

even the dogs under the table eat the

children's

crumbs and he said to her for this

statement you may go your way the demon

has left your

daughter and she went home and she found

the child lying in bed and the demon

gone then he returned from the region of

of tire and went through sidon to the

Sea of Galilee in the region of the

decapolis and they brought to him a man

who was deaf and had a speech

impediment and They begged him to lay

his hand on

him and taking him aside from the crowd

privately he put his fingers into his

ears and after spitting he touched his

tongue and looking up to heaven he

sighed and said to him at

which is that is open be

opened and his ears were

opened his tongue was released and he

spoke

plainly and Jesus charged them to tell

no

one but the more he charged them the

more zealously they proclaimed it and

they were astonished beyond measure

saying he has done all things well he

even makes the deaf he and the mute

speak this is the word of

God in this first

interaction with the Pharisees you know

they they come to

Jesus and they have these questions for

him right they ask him why aren't your

disciples observing Jewish custom why

aren't they observing and following

ceremonial clean

why aren't they doing what they should

do and Jesus uses this conversation to

make a

distinction between that which God

commands and what men actually add to

God's commands in verses 6 through

8 we see this Jesus actually

quotes an ancient Scroll of Isaiah so

he's he's looking at the scriptures he's

looking at an ancient scroll now this is

a text that all of these religious

leaders would know quite

well and it it's a text that they would

be attempting to live by this would be

something they would be guiding their

lives and their living

by and so Jesus talks about it and he

actually challenges them through it and

he's quite provocative in doing so this

is pretty rough okay he

says well did Isaiah prophesy about you

so he's saying the book of Isaiah when

it talks about this is talking about you

you Hypocrites he

says this people honors me with their

lips but their heart is far from me in

vain do they worship me teaching as

doctrines the Commandments of men of

men he says you leave the Commandment of

God and you hold to the tradition of

men this is really hard okay this is

quite

serious you are the Hypocrites that

Isaiah wrote about wow Jesus is saying

you're going through the

motions you're acting all Pious and

honoring

God but in reality you're following the

teachings of men not of God now this is

a crushing

accusation to be leveling against this

group of Pharisees now the pH

es they were a group that had been given

and trusted with the enormous

responsibility to teach and

lead the people to teach and lead the

Jewish

people so here we have an account where

they're coming to

Jesus and they're following right they

think they're following the

teaching but they're actually adding

these additional commands they're adding

beyond what God has given and

Jesus exposes this to

them

ouch he's so critical of the Pharisees

here because their focus was on

ceremonial cleanness and hygiene and it

had become so warped right their desire

to live for God had become so warped

that it was being used as an

excuse for ignoring the law and not

actually worshiping God now verse

n really points this

out he kind of hammers it

home he says you have a fine

way of neglecting rejecting the

Commandment of God in order to establish

your tradition so Jesus is kind of like

hey look wow you're really good at this

aren't you wow he's really really being

so firm with them now

now Jesus doesn't just level this

accusation against the

Pharisees and just kind of keep it you

know non-specific no he goes further and

he basically says let me let me explain

how you do this let me show you let me

give you an example

okay he

says in verse 11 he talks about this he

actually gives them uh this specific

word Corbin okay that's a strange word

to us perhaps with modern

ears but when something is called Corbin

what it actually meant was it was

something that was designated to be

offered to God at the temple okay so we

could think of it as offering all right

so what the Pharisees were

doing was they were encouraging and they

were allowing a practice of worshippers

at the Temple of actually saying this

financial resource this money I'm going

to give it to God this is Corbin this is

an offering

okay but what was happening was they

were not they were not following through

on

that but they were using that uh in

reality uh this this customary tradition

to neglect the Commandment that God had

given to care for their parents to honor

their

parents so this is interesting critique

it's a little hard to understand but

follow okay if you can so Jesus is

saying look you're using this idea this

man-made practice of Corbin to not

follow the Commandment of

God okay to not follow the Commandment

of God and he explains it you know in in

this verse in these verses here what

you're saying is Corbin what you're

marking is offered to God then you don't

use it to honor your parents and you're

not honoring God with it you're not

giving it so Jesus is basically giving

them an airtight example and just being

honest with them and exposing

them now this is not an easy passage to

dwell on this part right because the

lesson here is that we do the same

thing like we do the same thing

right we're capable of the same

thing at the root of sin

is a rejection of God's good way in

exchange for following our own

way for following our own way so sin is

simply a determined

deviation away from God and a turning to

follow our own

way or as Jesus puts it the Commandments

of

men so we would do well to ask God God

to help us examine our

hearts and our

actions and our

lives before

him are there any Traditions are there

any manmade Customs that we are adhering

to are there ways that we are following

the Commandments of men and not God

himself are we like the Pharisees and

missing the true essence of worship unto

God the call to follow Jesus is a costly

one to follow Jesus means to honor him

as Lord Of Our

Lives to know his way and to obey his

commands but the good news is that when

we turn to Jesus Jesus is present to

help us and to guide us and he gives us

he gives us the desire and the strength

to follow

him

and at times when we sin before

God and we're convicted of our

sin we can

Rejoice that God is at work in

us through the holy spirit to guide us

back to

him repentance is exactly that turning

away from our own sin our own way our

own desire to be our own God and turning

to God the one true

God you know there's a there's a passage

in Isaiah the same book that Jesus was

just referring to another passage that

reads

this he gives power to the

faint and to him who has no might he

increases

strength even youths right young people

who should be strong even youths shall

faint and be

weary and young men shall fall EX

exhausted but those who wait for the

Lord shall renew their strength they

shall Mount up on wings with wings like

eagles they shall run and not be weary

they shall walk and not be

faint so when we're ready to confess our

sin to God Jesus is there to strengthen

us to give us the desire to walk in his

way now in the rest of this interaction

that Jesus had with

the Pharisees and the scribes and other

people that were gathered there

listening he talks about this

further our capacity and desire for sin

friends is the issue

here it's about our hearts it's about

our hearts it's a matter of the

heart the Pharisees were focused on

practice and tradition and observing the

Commandments of men men and they were

good at it we're good at it but they

were missing the main thing they were

missing the only

thing they were missing it it's about

our hearts before

God so Jesus kind of unpacked that right

here and here too he says it's what

comes out of a person that defiles him

it's a matter of the

heart one of the most challenging things

about another passage in the Bible

called The Sermon on the

Mount when Jesus is before a large group

of people and he he just is going

through and and just expounding on all

this truth there's a there's a couple

parts in it that are really

challenging and we're going to look at

them it's detailed in the gospel of

Matthew in chapter

5 one of the most challenging things

about the sermon on the the mount is

Jesus actually amplifies the meaning of

God's commandment now he doesn't change

them but he shows us what is really

meant by the

Commandments he really shows us and he

does this to reveal the same principle

that we're just talking about here about

a matter of the heart that it's really

about our hearts and not about an

outward appearance not about our actions

although those are

important but God is looking at our

hearts in Matthew Chapter 5 we read

this you have heard this is Jesus

talking and teaching among a large group

of people he said you have heard that it

was said to those of old so looking back

at the old uh Testament and the old law

that was given to the people you have

heard that it was said of old you shall

not

murder and whoever murders will be

liable to

judgment now we might think okay I'm

good hav't killed

anybody but I say to you Jesus says this

I say to you that everyone who is angry

with his brother will be liable to

judgment whoever insults his brother

will be liable to the counsel and

whoever says you fool will be liable to

the hell of

fire now this is serious Jesus is saying

it's the heart the anger in your heart

is the root of actually taking the life

of another you have that in you I have

that in

me Jesus goes on you have heard it was

said You shall not commit adultery you

might think oh okay I'm doing okay

there but Jesus says to you that

everyone who looks at a woman with

lustful intent has already committed

adultery with her in his heart do you

see that it's a matter of the heart a

matter of the

heart

when Jesus

explains it all in this way we

realize that's

me that's

me I'm a sinner before a holy

God the good news of the Gospel is

that when we realize that when we

understand that and we confess our sin

to

God we experience God's Great Grace we

experience God's Great Grace we are

forgiven because of what Jesus Christ

has done for

us in Romans we read this such a short

verse but it has

profound meaning profound

meaning God shows his love for us and

that while we were still sinners Christ

died for us Christ died for

us this is the this is the the whole

basis of the Gospel the good

news that while we were broken when we

were Sinners when we weren't living as

God desired us when we come to that

understanding and we run to God we're

met with love and mercy and Grace and

forgiveness

the next story that we read is about

this woman the syap phenician

woman Mark gives us some details about

this interaction she comes to Jesus out

desperation she's

desperate we don't know what else she

has tried or what she has sought out or

what she has done but she comes to him

desperate

desperate her daughter has an unclean

Spirit the text

reads this woman is clearly

distraught her daughter is

suffering now we have to understand this

further because to a modern reader it

seems like Jesus his response to her is

it's cryptic we don't understand it and

it kind of seems

cold what's going on

now there's a lot to unpack here but

Jesus when he

came his ministry the work that he was

doing it was at the outset it was

focused on the people the go the people

that God had called the Jewish people

and his statement is talking about

that he's underscoring that he now he

uses an analogy of of a table and table

Fellowship in reference to God's un

folding Plan of Salvation coming through

the Jewish people Jesus himself being a

Jew and then the Jews coming to believe

and then taking the gospel the good news

unto the Gentiles but we're seeing this

at an early stage and so Jesus is saying

look I'm focused on the Jewish

people he speaks of this in the

gospel John see if I put that in here

yeah Jesus is speaking with another

person another woman in this account but

he talks about that he said you worship

what we do not know we worship what we

do know for salvation is from the Jews

he was talking about mode of worship but

he's highlighting this right that he

came to minister to the Jews the Jewish

people God was going to move through

them and we would see that later we'll

see that later in the New Testament

but right now in this interaction he

mentions that and talks about that so

it'll be later right in the in the

unfolding Plan of Salvation that we see

it expand Jewish converts coming to

faith in God in this way through the

Messiah they would carry it on to the

Gentiles unto all the

world but what stands out in this

interaction is the woman's

awareness of her utmost need of Jesus's

help

she she knows it she's desperate he's

the only one that can help

her the only one that can help her

daughter so she comes to him and out of

desperation she pleads his

Mercy she avails herself to Jesus's

power and

mercy and he does heal her

daughter now her answer to

him it is showing faith

she acknowledges the Salvation that is

to come at that point she's saying yes

but even even if there's the table

fellowship and we're not at that table

right now we are a people that will even

come to to eat what you have and her

answer to Jesus

demonstrates demonstrates that she's

placing her trust in him she's coming to

him out of utmost desperation and he

honors

that he honors that this woman

knew that Jesus was the only one that

could help her she came to him in that

she placed all her trust in his mercy

Power in the very same way and this is

what we find in this part in the very

same way Jesus welcomes the

desperate the weary soul that sees him

is the only one that can

help have you ever been in that place

those of you who cling to Jesus you know

yeah you've been there there is no one

else but some of you may feel that today

that there is no other place for you to

go even as we talk about our sin our

Brokenness who can help me what can help

me the Bible says that Jesus is the only

way he is the one that has mercy and

love for us so have you been in that

place do you find yourself in that place

today it's been

said that we don't really realize that

Jesus is all we need

until until he's all we

have he's all we have so for this woman

she came to

that all that could help her was Jesus

and she came to him with that

desperation bringing

nothing she came to receive everything

from him so one of the realities of the

Gospel is that Jesus demonstrates his

mercy and power

again and again and again as we seek

him again and again and again if you

sense your need for

salvation for renewal for New Life In

Jesus today run to him run to him any

Christian here would love to talk to you

about that I would love to talk to you

about that let's talk you probably have

good questions you probably want to know

you probably come to Jesus like these

people did with questions come come to

him with those questions run to him and

find

forgiveness find New Life in him and

then

Christian Christian be reminded right

now of of Jesus's work and power at work

in you be reminded we forget why do we

forget we're just good at that we're

just good at forgetting we need to be

reminded that he saved us and he's

refining us through his

sanctification of our soul so be

encouraged that he is present and that

he is at work in you he is at work in

you so the last story we come to Jesus

healing a man healing a

man you know this man is unable to hear

and different

passages talk about his his speech in

different ways some passages or some

Bible translations say that he could not

speak some of them said that he was his

speech was impeded so he wasn't able to

communicate clearly probably sometimes

when people not do not have the sense of

hearing it's difficult for them to speak

because they have not heard regular

speech patterns it's difficult so we

don't know to what

degree but to some level he's unable to

communicate to

Jesus he's unable to hear

Jesus but there were those that brought

this man to Jesus some gathered around

here maybe family Maybe friends

acquaintances but it says They begged

him They begged Jesus help

him they had concern for him they had

compassion for him and they sought out

Jesus for

help and Jesus heals him he heals him

and Jesus demonstrates his Mercy he

demonstrates his power in this act of

healing now there's some interesting

things about how Jesus heals him

that might seem a little strange and you

can read further about that what uh

theologians and and commentators think

about what Jesus may have been trying to

explain through how he actually

physically healed this man we won't get

into that

now but we I do want us to focus on this

through these acts of healing of this

young girl and of this

man Jesus was demonstrating and showing

that the time of salvation

is

here it's come now he's showing this

back all those years ago Jesus is

beginning to unpack beginning to

show and

say I've

come I'm

here the one you've been waiting on I'm

here the promised one who will heal us

and bear our

iniquities I'm here

here I'm here and he's going to

demonstrate it through his teaching he's

going to demonstrate it through his

power

healing physical

healing so it's starting to break in you

see

it starting to break into the

world and Jesus is is demonstrating

that so in the healing of This Woman's

daughter the healing of this man Jesus

clearly showing that God's

restoration of all

things all

things through the Messiah through the

promised

one it's breaking into the world and

it's

here and friends that breaking in it's

here now you know we just celebrated

Advent

so Advent we we just celebrated the

season of Advent every year leading up

to Christmas a time where we remember

Jesus has

come and that he will come

again that's what's Happening Here Jesus

has come he's breaking into the world

breaking in so in closing let us let us

consider what we've read today or we

might say what has read us let us

consider in Jesus's interaction with the

SC the scribes and the Pharisees are

there ways that we are following the

Commandments of men and not God himself

are

there are we like the Pharisees are we

missing the true Essence and worship of

God well let's ask God to reveal that to

us and if and if he does then we can

turn from that and we can follow and we

can worship Him in truth you see that

that's beautiful right and in regard to

the the sarap phenician woman you know

and her trust and her Reliance and faith

in Jesus is that part of your life story

as well like do you rest in the person

and work of Jesus Christ as your savior

as your salvation as the only one and

you've come to him like that have you

been at that place of desperation and

helplessness like that woman so many

years

ago if so

Jesus is ready to welcome you to

himself he's ready he says come come to

me and then he's ready to help give you

the desire to follow him he's help he's

ready to change your desires from things

that are not of God to things that are

of God it's an incredible renewal that

Jesus does in

US believe in

believe in him place your trust in

him as we come into this new year

there's a lot of suffering right oh my

goodness there's a lot of suffering and

hardship in the world right

now in your lives I think if we had time

to share we'd probably

weep of things that are going on with

each of

us and in the world too right read the

news it breaks your

heart and it

should

and so yeah here we are the year has

changed we've flipped our

calendars but the reality is the state

of the world has not changed if anything

it's gotten harder in the last week

huh the darkness is

great but you know in the Gospel of

John we're implored to know and to

remember that Jesus the light of the

world has come the light of the world

has come and it says this the light

shines in the

darkness and the Darkness has not

overcome it friends if the darkness has

not overcome it yet it will not it will

not Jesus is here he has

come go to him rest in Him worship Him

allow him to lead you he will is

faithful to allow him to give you that

desire to follow him and to walk in his

way let's

pray holy God we thank

you for these gospel accounts of your

mercy and your

power holy spirit of

God we ask that you would reveal to our

hearts any way in which we exchange true

worship for false observance and

adherence to man-made Traditions

Customs basically help us what you know

help us know and discern what is

Honorable to

you help us God help us to worship you

in spirit and in

truth Lord we pray that you would remind

us of your presence that you are here

with

us remind us of your power as we enter

into this new

year

we are

grateful that in a world where

everything is subject to change and

everything does change you do not

change help us Look to You Lord Jesus

again and again as you lead us in this

life we ask and pray all of this in your

holy

name

amen

","":
Grace
