morning

everyone I'm preaching in English this

morning I hope you don't need

translation for my Irish accent I will

try to speak

clearly as I was thinking about what

should I preach for

Easter uh in my own devotions my Bible

reading I I was really struck by these

vers vers in

Micah 7: 18 to20 it's in the Old

Testament but I think it's very

appropriate for us to look at together

as we think of Easter

morning Micah 7 verses

19 to uh 18 to

20 who is a God Like You pardoning

iniquity and passing over transgression

for the remnant of his

inheritance he does not retain his anger

forever because he Delights in steadfast

love he will again have compassion on us

he will tread our iniquities underfoot

he will cast all our sins into the

depths of the

sea you will show faithfulness to Jacob

and steadfast love to Abraham as you

have sworn to our father s from the days

of

old and I've entitled this sermon the

long wait is over the long wait is

over I don't know about you but I don't

like to wait especially nowadays we live

in a society where everything should be

fast if possible

instant um at our church we've had a

computer which nobody uses why it's got

an old HD drive it's underpowered with

memory when you turn it on you have to

go downstairs make a coffee and after 5

minutes it might have turned on so

nobody uses it but just last week we had

a computer engineer guy he came he put a

new s SSD drive in he upped the memory

by another 8 Mega uh gigabytes and

suddenly you turn it on it's instant and

now it is being used all the time the

only time that we don't like to wait is

maybe the dentist you know after you

after you so you can go

ahead uh the sound of the drill you're

just like no I don't want to rush or or

an awkward conversation when we need to

speak to someone about something we know

it's going to be difficult we want to

put it off those are the times when we

don't mind

waiting now in the Book of

Micah there are lots of things in his

book which the people are not looking

forward

to now when Micah wrote it was

3,700 years ago so a long time ago but

actually very relevant to the age we're

living in because Israel was being

squeezed like a burger between two

Burger buns you have the Assyrians and

the Babylonians in the north and you

have the Egyptians in the south

and Israel is the meat Patty in the

middle they're being

squeezed and it's a difficult time he

says there's going to be judgment

there's going to be Exile there's going

to be foreign enemies who have such

super weapons that you don't have

they're going to come in and you're

going to be be wiped out but also

scattered throughout this book there are

promises like we've just read of God's

love God's faithfulness and Grace saying

that God still has a plan for their

lives now we're living in a world which

is

changing we have uh different conflicts

around the world we have different

economic pressures around the world and

you may be facing it personally in your

own family let alone in the wider World

difficulties

pressures financial and otherwise and so

I think it's very appropriate the

promises of Micah are appropriate for us

today but the climax of the whole book

is found in this hymn of praise and

faith that occurs at the very end of

Micah in three verses he reminds the

people that God is unique in his

forgiveness he's unique when you mess up

God forgives God is much more likely to

forgive than he is to judge I don't know

what your picture of God is this morning

that God is the the hard teacher who is

ready to punish you at a moment's notice

and throw a thunder B no that is not the

picture we have in the Bible God is a

god of Grace a god of Mercy that we've

been singing about in some of our

hymns and God wants to say he still has

a plan for their

lives and God has a plan for our lives

no matter what you are going through or

what you've been

through

so uh there's a promise but it's a

future promise a future promise that God

will show compassion God will show

steadfast love in the future now in our

communion when we have the cup and we

have the

bread three times it says do this in

remembrance of me every time you do this

do this to

remember why does it say that because

we're looking back we're looking back to

Easter so that's what we've been doing

this morning we're looking back to the

Cross but for Micah and his people

they're looking forward there's going to

be a day when God is going to bring

forgiveness to the world there's going

to be a day when God is going to show

his Mercy we see little glimpses of it

in the Old Testament but we want to see

that day so they were looking forward in

the same way that we look

back and he wants to show God's people

back in the Old Testament and today that

it's worth holding on to God it's worth

holding on to God there's many of us

might be tempted you know this

Christianity thing I grew up in a

Christian family or or I've been coming

along to church and and I've been

studying about Jesus but is it really

worth it is it really worth it and the

answer from mic the answer from Easter

is it is worth it it is worth

holding on to God because the long wait

is over and there are three things I

want to say um this Easter morning

firstly uh about God's unique

forgiveness sorry I'm not sure if

there's a monitor I can't see the slides

has it moved on

oh I can't see the monitor yeah need to

look up okay so

um the first first the first thing I

want to say is about God's unique

forgiveness in verse 18 God's unique

forgiveness who is a God Like You

pardoning iniquity and passing over

transgression who is a God Like You

There are as many gods today as there

were in the ancient world some people

say there's maybe up to over

5,000 different religious movements in

our world today and everyone is saying

come over here come over here uh follow

this God follow that

God there's one thing which is

outstanding and it's well known to

everyone that Christianity is a religion

forgiveness it's a religion of

forgiveness you can go confess your sins

to God and you can be

forgiven um that in the ancient world

was totally startling totally startling

and whilst there may may be many

similarities between different religions

this is the one area in which the god of

the Bible stands unique our God is a

forgiving God for Micah how could he say

this well you've only got to flick to

the first mess up in the Bible and the

Bible's full of mess ups people say oh

how can the Bible have this awful things

happening because the Bible is saying

humans mess up and God forgives God says

to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden

the day you eat of that fruit you shall

surely die did they die no they didn't

praise God we're here because God

forgave

God gave the first sacrifice the first

animal died in the place of Adam and Eve

God showed Mercy he showed his love and

showed forgiveness to them even back

then what about Abraham the father of

well he messed up too and God forgave

him Moses messed up God forgave him the

Israelites in the in in in Egypt you

know as I as I read through Exodus

Leviticus Numbers I'm thinking oh if I

was God I would have destroyed these

people long ago no patience for them but

God forgives them and he continues with

them and sometimes when I look at my own

life and I see how I've messed up it's

just amazing how God is a God who says

start again you can start

again King Saul's sin David's

sin my sin and your sin God is a God who

forgives our God is much

more likely to Pardon us than he is to

judge he is a loving heavenly father who

looks down at our lives and he loves you

and Easter is the proof that that he

loves you Easter's how how do I know God

loves me because he sent his only son to

die a horrific death on a cross for me

and so on Easter Sunday we see this

truth even brighter than Micah and the

people of his day our Our God shines out

brightly in a world of counterfit

religions a God who forgives a God who

loves to the uttermost

all of our iniquities that means all of

our imbalance we we we we we love to do

some things more than other things Our

Lives tend to be out of out of sync

imbalanced all of our transgressions

when when there's a new entry sign and

we know we shouldn't go there but we go

and we do that thing we go and take that

thing we go and think that thing that we

shouldn't be doing but we

go God says all of our iniquities all of

our transgressions and all of God's

anger at sin and judgment were dealt

with at the cross many people say why

was it

dark between midday and 300 p.m.

Darkness over the land because darkness

is a symbol of God's judgment but was

God judging us no the Judgment that we

deserved was poured out on

Jesus poured out on

Jesus the separation the the Judgment of

our sin my sin and your sin was poured

out on Jesus in the darkness on that

day so that when Jesus rose on Easter

Sunday he can shower God's love upon us

we can be sure that our sins are dealt

with if we trust in what Jesus did at

the cross and he did it not just for

Jews but for all of the people all

around the world every race every tribe

and tongue and people so the first thing

God's unique

forgiveness Amazing Grace it truly is my

second point is God's future compassion

God's future compassion remember Micah

writing 3,700 years ago he's writing

before uh uh 2000 sorry 2700 years ago

so 700 years before Christ they're

looking forward to Christ's coming

coming and at Easter something Earth

shattering happened something that the

people of the Old Testament were longing

for waiting for and hoping for that God

would deal with their sins and shower

them with his love but they had no idea

to the length God would go you see for

someone in the Old Testament to have

their sins forgiven you couldn't just

come to worship god with a Bible under

under your arm no you had to have a

sacrifice an animal had to die so that

you could come into God's

presence if you like there was a series

of checkpoints before you could come

close to God you had to pass these

different checkpoints and only one

person once per year could go right into

the holy

place but praise God when Christ died

that curtain separating God in the Holy

place was torn

open and we can go in and we can meet

with God wherever we are wherever we

are but in in verse 19 he says God will

again in the future have compassion on

us he will tread our iniquities Under

Foot you will cast all of our sins into

the depths of the sea all of our

sins the big ones the small on the ones

that we're so ashamed that we never want

to mention

it all of our

sins are thrown into the depths of the

sea never to be

recovered this is the earth shattering

amazing thing that happened at Easter

that the people in Micah's time were

looking forward to at Easter God showed

his compassion to humans by sending his

eternal son son to the Cross to show the

depths of his compassion and love this

was a publicly humiliating death right

right from Christ's conception and birth

he was he was born into a poor people

and oppressed people living under

Imperial Rome with no

rights he was brought to a false trial

false Witnesses

corruption

and he was sent to a cross to hang naked

on the cross to die for us that is love

that is

love the cross shows the depths of God's

love to crush our sins to death to

remove our sins once for all Jesus was

crushed Jesus was

crushed with our sins

that our sins could be removed that we

can have a fresh start day by day

walking with him so a future compassion

when sins would be dealt with once and

for all that's what we celebrate today

at

Easter my third point is God's steadfast

love God's steadfast love in verse 20

you will show faithfulness to Jacob and

steadfast love to Abraham as you have

sworn to our fathers from the days of

old promises were made promises were

made even in the Garden of Eden to Adam

and Eve the first time they ever messed

up God gave them the

promise the seed of the woman a son will

come from the woman and that son Will

Conquer death

Will Conquer The Curse which has which

we experience every day in a broken

world it's not just human beings Easter

isn't just about us it's about a whole

world which is broken by

sin the way we deal with nature the way

we deal with animals the way we deal

with one another the way Nations war

with each other and control resources

for themselves in a selfish way God said

I am going going to end

it when did that happen at Easter a

promise was given that our enemy the

devil would one day be defeated later

Abraham was promised that God would

bless him and he would make him a

blessing to All

Nations that's what Jesus did at the

cross the son of Abraham a descendant of

Abraham died on the cross to be a

blessing to everyone in this world still

later God promised Jacob that God had a

unique plan for his Descendants the

children of Israel the question was

always when the answer was always in the

future when is God going to do this in

the future the whole of the Old

Testament is pointing

forward God is going to do something but

it's in the

future it's like uh one of these movies

you watch and it leaves you on a

cliffhanger I've been watching uh Dune

you know and the first one ends on a

cliffhanger you wonder what's going to

happen you go and watch the second one

and again it leaves you on a

cliffhanger and that's the whole of the

Old Testament all 39 books are all

pointing forward there's going to be a

great climax there's going to be a great

Victory and that's what we celebrate at

Easter to today we celebrate that God

has kept his

promises that at the cross Jesus

defeated Satan once and for all at the

cross a descendant of Abraham would

bring many to faith in God at the cross

Jesus the descendant of Jacob Jacob who

means liar his name means liar the lying

schemer the corrupt guy who would steal

the eyeballs out of your

head that the his descendant would

create a way for all

Sinners to be restored to

God all Sinners we can't point the

finger we we look at Jacob and we say oh

yeah look at Jacob but you know every

time we point the finger three fingers

are pointing back do we not lie are we

not proud are we not full of anger we

may spill it out on Twitter not on the

streets we may spill it out out in our

social media we may spill it out behind

people's

backs but we're is

guilty we are as guilty and we need

Easter as much as Abraham as much as

Adam and Eve as much as King David as

much as King Saul as all the people of

the Old

Testament I need it and you need it but

praise God God's steadfast love there's

a word in the Old Testament for this

love it's

calleded HED hessed means it's a

NeverEnding steadfast unmovable will

always love you kind of

love this is not a fair weather friend

or a fair weather love or I love you as

long as you're attractive I love you as

long as you're you're uh looking good

but if you mess up you will be cancelled

God doesn't have a cancel C

culture when we mess up he is there for

us he is closer than a

brother so praise God for God's

steadfast love steadfast love in

answering all of the promises that he

has given in the Old

Testament fulfilled at the

cross so finally I want to leave you

with a

question what are you waiting

for what are you waiting for

the people of Micah's day are struggling

they're living in a world spinning out

of control where there are Wars there

are armies trampling across there's

destruction like we see on our

television screens around the

world scenes of horror scenes of

starvation scenes of of innocent people

caught up in

Conflict we see countries racked with

corruption so Society full of evil no

different to the society in Micah's day

and Micah urges them don't give up trust

in God hold on to him like an

anchor hold on to the one who truly

loves with a never stopping faithful

steadfast love hold on keep Clinging On

to him the Risen

Christ still has the power power today

to transform

lives there's a woman in the

gospels she's been racked with

sickness bleeding that never stops no we

think bleeding yeah that's it's really

hard when that

happens I I've be married 25 years this

year and my wife's had different gy

problems but we don't realize that for

this woman to bleed means Never To

Worship

God cuz Back in the New Testament days

if you had bleeding you were forbidden

to enter the temple you were forbidden

to come near to God you're forbidden to

worship and this woman reaches out in

her desperation she's spent all of her

money on the doctors and no one could

help she's tried all the other gods

she's tried

everything and she decides to secretly

because if she touches Jesus she's a

she's a woman she's on

claim so she secretly decides I am going

to give my last chance by trusting in

Jesus and I'm going to touch him and I

think if I just touch him he will heal

me he will heal me and she reaches out

to Jesus's cloak at the end of her

tether when all the other options have

failed she finally turns to the unique

Son of

God just by touching him she has faith

that her life will be

changed and that's still true today if

we reach out to Jesus Christ Our Lives

can be

changed our lives can be

transformed I know this to be true in my

own

life I know this to be true in many

lives Jesus died at Easter to Pardon

your

iniquity Jesus died at Easter to pass

over your transgressions to shower his

love upon you to deal with your sins

once and for all he gave you new

life in a world full of broken promises

broken

contracts lies corruption and Brokenness

Jesus keeps his

word one day there will be no more

Darkness one day there will be no more

sorrow and death

it begins at Easter but one day it will

be completed when Christ returns and all

of the Brokenness in our lives and all

of the Brokenness in our world will be

gone and until Jesus returns let us be

those who cling to Christ especially in

dark and troubled

days maybe you're here because A friend

brought

you or because you're interested in

finding out more more about

God maybe you're someone who's tried a

lot of different religious things and

found them

lacking most gods of this world can be

categorized in three ways they're either

concerned with

wealth power or

sex wealth power or

sex but as we've seen here in Micah our

God is conern

eared with

forgiveness with

faithfulness and giving people a new

start and hope our God is uniquely

interested in you in giving you a you

start a new life reach out he's not dead

he is alive he's risen he's here come I

you to come talk to someone talk to

Pastor ni

talk to some of the Christians you

know ask them about what it's like to

know Jesus and how to come to him all of

you who are thirsty come everyone who's

tired come all of you who are weak and

heavy laden come this is the message of

Easter Christ is risen he's here he

comes to give us hope to give us life to

give us peace to give us forgiveness of

sins praise God

Amen

","":
Grace
