good morning<\/p>\n
everyone I'm preaching in English this<\/p>\n
morning I hope you don't need<\/p>\n
translation for my Irish accent I will<\/p>\n
try to speak<\/p>\n
clearly as I was thinking about what<\/p>\n
should I preach for<\/p>\n
Easter uh in my own devotions my Bible<\/p>\n
reading I I was really struck by these<\/p>\n
vers vers in<\/p>\n
Micah 7: 18 to20 it's in the Old<\/p>\n
Testament but I think it's very<\/p>\n
appropriate for us to look at together<\/p>\n
as we think of Easter<\/p>\n
morning Micah 7 verses<\/p>\n
19 to uh 18 to<\/p>\n
20 who is a God Like You pardoning<\/p>\n
iniquity and passing over transgression<\/p>\n
for the remnant of his<\/p>\n
inheritance he does not retain his anger<\/p>\n
forever because he Delights in steadfast<\/p>\n
love he will again have compassion on us<\/p>\n
he will tread our iniquities underfoot<\/p>\n
he will cast all our sins into the<\/p>\n
depths of the<\/p>\n
sea you will show faithfulness to Jacob<\/p>\n
and steadfast love to Abraham as you<\/p>\n
have sworn to our father s from the days<\/p>\n
of<\/p>\n
old and I've entitled this sermon the<\/p>\n
long wait is over the long wait is<\/p>\n
over I don't know about you but I don't<\/p>\n
like to wait especially nowadays we live<\/p>\n
in a society where everything should be<\/p>\n
fast if possible<\/p>\n
instant um at our church we've had a<\/p>\n
computer which nobody uses why it's got<\/p>\n
an old HD drive it's underpowered with<\/p>\n
memory when you turn it on you have to<\/p>\n
go downstairs make a coffee and after 5<\/p>\n
minutes it might have turned on so<\/p>\n
nobody uses it but just last week we had<\/p>\n
a computer engineer guy he came he put a<\/p>\n
new s SSD drive in he upped the memory<\/p>\n
by another 8 Mega uh gigabytes and<\/p>\n
suddenly you turn it on it's instant and<\/p>\n
now it is being used all the time the<\/p>\n
only time that we don't like to wait is<\/p>\n
maybe the dentist you know after you<\/p>\n
after you so you can go<\/p>\n
ahead uh the sound of the drill you're<\/p>\n
just like no I don't want to rush or or<\/p>\n
an awkward conversation when we need to<\/p>\n
speak to someone about something we know<\/p>\n
it's going to be difficult we want to<\/p>\n
put it off those are the times when we<\/p>\n
don't mind<\/p>\n
waiting now in the Book of<\/p>\n
Micah there are lots of things in his<\/p>\n
book which the people are not looking<\/p>\n
forward<\/p>\n
to now when Micah wrote it was<\/p>\n
3,700 years ago so a long time ago but<\/p>\n
actually very relevant to the age we're<\/p>\n
living in because Israel was being<\/p>\n
squeezed like a burger between two<\/p>\n
Burger buns you have the Assyrians and<\/p>\n
the Babylonians in the north and you<\/p>\n
have the Egyptians in the south<\/p>\n
and Israel is the meat Patty in the<\/p>\n
middle they're being<\/p>\n
squeezed and it's a difficult time he<\/p>\n
says there's going to be judgment<\/p>\n
there's going to be Exile there's going<\/p>\n
to be foreign enemies who have such<\/p>\n
super weapons that you don't have<\/p>\n
they're going to come in and you're<\/p>\n
going to be be wiped out but also<\/p>\n
scattered throughout this book there are<\/p>\n
promises like we've just read of God's<\/p>\n
love God's faithfulness and Grace saying<\/p>\n
that God still has a plan for their<\/p>\n
lives now we're living in a world which<\/p>\n
is<\/p>\n
changing we have uh different conflicts<\/p>\n
around the world we have different<\/p>\n
economic pressures around the world and<\/p>\n
you may be facing it personally in your<\/p>\n
own family let alone in the wider World<\/p>\n
difficulties<\/p>\n
pressures financial and otherwise and so<\/p>\n
I think it's very appropriate the<\/p>\n
promises of Micah are appropriate for us<\/p>\n
today but the climax of the whole book<\/p>\n
is found in this hymn of praise and<\/p>\n
faith that occurs at the very end of<\/p>\n
Micah in three verses he reminds the<\/p>\n
people that God is unique in his<\/p>\n
forgiveness he's unique when you mess up<\/p>\n
God forgives God is much more likely to<\/p>\n
forgive than he is to judge I don't know<\/p>\n
what your picture of God is this morning<\/p>\n
that God is the the hard teacher who is<\/p>\n
ready to punish you at a moment's notice<\/p>\n
and throw a thunder B no that is not the<\/p>\n
picture we have in the Bible God is a<\/p>\n
god of Grace a god of Mercy that we've<\/p>\n
been singing about in some of our<\/p>\n
hymns and God wants to say he still has<\/p>\n
a plan for their<\/p>\n
lives and God has a plan for our lives<\/p>\n
no matter what you are going through or<\/p>\n
what you've been<\/p>\n
through<\/p>\n
so uh there's a promise but it's a<\/p>\n
future promise a future promise that God<\/p>\n
will show compassion God will show<\/p>\n
steadfast love in the future now in our<\/p>\n
communion when we have the cup and we<\/p>\n
have the<\/p>\n
bread three times it says do this in<\/p>\n
remembrance of me every time you do this<\/p>\n
do this to<\/p>\n
remember why does it say that because<\/p>\n
we're looking back we're looking back to<\/p>\n
Easter so that's what we've been doing<\/p>\n
this morning we're looking back to the<\/p>\n
Cross but for Micah and his people<\/p>\n
they're looking forward there's going to<\/p>\n
be a day when God is going to bring<\/p>\n
forgiveness to the world there's going<\/p>\n
to be a day when God is going to show<\/p>\n
his Mercy we see little glimpses of it<\/p>\n
in the Old Testament but we want to see<\/p>\n
that day so they were looking forward in<\/p>\n
the same way that we look<\/p>\n
back and he wants to show God's people<\/p>\n
back in the Old Testament and today that<\/p>\n
it's worth holding on to God it's worth<\/p>\n
holding on to God there's many of us<\/p>\n
might be tempted you know this<\/p>\n
Christianity thing I grew up in a<\/p>\n
Christian family or or I've been coming<\/p>\n
along to church and and I've been<\/p>\n
studying about Jesus but is it really<\/p>\n
worth it is it really worth it and the<\/p>\n
answer from mic the answer from Easter<\/p>\n
is it is worth it it is worth<\/p>\n
holding on to God because the long wait<\/p>\n
is over and there are three things I<\/p>\n
want to say um this Easter morning<\/p>\n
firstly uh about God's unique<\/p>\n
forgiveness sorry I'm not sure if<\/p>\n
there's a monitor I can't see the slides<\/p>\n
has it moved on<\/p>\n
oh I can't see the monitor yeah need to<\/p>\n
look up okay so<\/p>\n
um the first first the first thing I<\/p>\n
want to say is about God's unique<\/p>\n
forgiveness in verse 18 God's unique<\/p>\n
forgiveness who is a God Like You<\/p>\n
pardoning iniquity and passing over<\/p>\n
transgression who is a God Like You<\/p>\n
There are as many gods today as there<\/p>\n
were in the ancient world some people<\/p>\n
say there's maybe up to over<\/p>\n
5,000 different religious movements in<\/p>\n
our world today and everyone is saying<\/p>\n
come over here come over here uh follow<\/p>\n
this God follow that<\/p>\n
God there's one thing which is<\/p>\n
outstanding and it's well known to<\/p>\n
everyone that Christianity is a religion<\/p>\n
forgiveness it's a religion of<\/p>\n
forgiveness you can go confess your sins<\/p>\n
to God and you can be<\/p>\n
forgiven um that in the ancient world<\/p>\n
was totally startling totally startling<\/p>\n
and whilst there may may be many<\/p>\n
similarities between different religions<\/p>\n
this is the one area in which the god of<\/p>\n
the Bible stands unique our God is a<\/p>\n
forgiving God for Micah how could he say<\/p>\n
this well you've only got to flick to<\/p>\n
the first mess up in the Bible and the<\/p>\n
Bible's full of mess ups people say oh<\/p>\n
how can the Bible have this awful things<\/p>\n
happening because the Bible is saying<\/p>\n
humans mess up and God forgives God says<\/p>\n
to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden<\/p>\n
the day you eat of that fruit you shall<\/p>\n
surely die did they die no they didn't<\/p>\n
praise God we're here because God<\/p>\n
forgave<\/p>\n
God gave the first sacrifice the first<\/p>\n
animal died in the place of Adam and Eve<\/p>\n
God showed Mercy he showed his love and<\/p>\n
showed forgiveness to them even back<\/p>\n
then what about Abraham the father of<\/p>\n
well he messed up too and God forgave<\/p>\n
him Moses messed up God forgave him the<\/p>\n
Israelites in the in in in Egypt you<\/p>\n
know as I as I read through Exodus<\/p>\n
Leviticus Numbers I'm thinking oh if I<\/p>\n
was God I would have destroyed these<\/p>\n
people long ago no patience for them but<\/p>\n
God forgives them and he continues with<\/p>\n
them and sometimes when I look at my own<\/p>\n
life and I see how I've messed up it's<\/p>\n
just amazing how God is a God who says<\/p>\n
start again you can start<\/p>\n
again King Saul's sin David's<\/p>\n
sin my sin and your sin God is a God who<\/p>\n
forgives our God is much<\/p>\n
more likely to Pardon us than he is to<\/p>\n
judge he is a loving heavenly father who<\/p>\n
looks down at our lives and he loves you<\/p>\n
and Easter is the proof that that he<\/p>\n
loves you Easter's how how do I know God<\/p>\n
loves me because he sent his only son to<\/p>\n
die a horrific death on a cross for me<\/p>\n
and so on Easter Sunday we see this<\/p>\n
truth even brighter than Micah and the<\/p>\n
people of his day our Our God shines out<\/p>\n
brightly in a world of counterfit<\/p>\n
religions a God who forgives a God who<\/p>\n
loves to the uttermost<\/p>\n
all of our iniquities that means all of<\/p>\n
our imbalance we we we we we love to do<\/p>\n
some things more than other things Our<\/p>\n
Lives tend to be out of out of sync<\/p>\n
imbalanced all of our transgressions<\/p>\n
when when there's a new entry sign and<\/p>\n
we know we shouldn't go there but we go<\/p>\n
and we do that thing we go and take that<\/p>\n
thing we go and think that thing that we<\/p>\n
shouldn't be doing but we<\/p>\n
go God says all of our iniquities all of<\/p>\n
our transgressions and all of God's<\/p>\n
anger at sin and judgment were dealt<\/p>\n
with at the cross many people say why<\/p>\n
was it<\/p>\n
dark between midday and 300 p.m.<\/p>\n
Darkness over the land because darkness<\/p>\n
is a symbol of God's judgment but was<\/p>\n
God judging us no the Judgment that we<\/p>\n
deserved was poured out on<\/p>\n
Jesus poured out on<\/p>\n
Jesus the separation the the Judgment of<\/p>\n
our sin my sin and your sin was poured<\/p>\n
out on Jesus in the darkness on that<\/p>\n
day so that when Jesus rose on Easter<\/p>\n
Sunday he can shower God's love upon us<\/p>\n
we can be sure that our sins are dealt<\/p>\n
with if we trust in what Jesus did at<\/p>\n
the cross and he did it not just for<\/p>\n
Jews but for all of the people all<\/p>\n
around the world every race every tribe<\/p>\n
and tongue and people so the first thing<\/p>\n
God's unique<\/p>\n
forgiveness Amazing Grace it truly is my<\/p>\n
second point is God's future compassion<\/p>\n
God's future compassion remember Micah<\/p>\n
writing 3,700 years ago he's writing<\/p>\n
before uh uh 2000 sorry 2700 years ago<\/p>\n
so 700 years before Christ they're<\/p>\n
looking forward to Christ's coming<\/p>\n
coming and at Easter something Earth<\/p>\n
shattering happened something that the<\/p>\n
people of the Old Testament were longing<\/p>\n
for waiting for and hoping for that God<\/p>\n
would deal with their sins and shower<\/p>\n
them with his love but they had no idea<\/p>\n
to the length God would go you see for<\/p>\n
someone in the Old Testament to have<\/p>\n
their sins forgiven you couldn't just<\/p>\n
come to worship god with a Bible under<\/p>\n
under your arm no you had to have a<\/p>\n
sacrifice an animal had to die so that<\/p>\n
you could come into God's<\/p>\n
presence if you like there was a series<\/p>\n
of checkpoints before you could come<\/p>\n
close to God you had to pass these<\/p>\n
different checkpoints and only one<\/p>\n
person once per year could go right into<\/p>\n
the holy<\/p>\n
place but praise God when Christ died<\/p>\n
that curtain separating God in the Holy<\/p>\n
place was torn<\/p>\n
open and we can go in and we can meet<\/p>\n
with God wherever we are wherever we<\/p>\n
are but in in verse 19 he says God will<\/p>\n
again in the future have compassion on<\/p>\n
us he will tread our iniquities Under<\/p>\n
Foot you will cast all of our sins into<\/p>\n
the depths of the sea all of our<\/p>\n
sins the big ones the small on the ones<\/p>\n
that we're so ashamed that we never want<\/p>\n
to mention<\/p>\n
it all of our<\/p>\n
sins are thrown into the depths of the<\/p>\n
sea never to be<\/p>\n
recovered this is the earth shattering<\/p>\n
amazing thing that happened at Easter<\/p>\n
that the people in Micah's time were<\/p>\n
looking forward to at Easter God showed<\/p>\n
his compassion to humans by sending his<\/p>\n
eternal son son to the Cross to show the<\/p>\n
depths of his compassion and love this<\/p>\n
was a publicly humiliating death right<\/p>\n
right from Christ's conception and birth<\/p>\n
he was he was born into a poor people<\/p>\n
and oppressed people living under<\/p>\n
Imperial Rome with no<\/p>\n
rights he was brought to a false trial<\/p>\n
false Witnesses<\/p>\n
corruption<\/p>\n
and he was sent to a cross to hang naked<\/p>\n
on the cross to die for us that is love<\/p>\n
that is<\/p>\n
love the cross shows the depths of God's<\/p>\n
love to crush our sins to death to<\/p>\n
remove our sins once for all Jesus was<\/p>\n
crushed Jesus was<\/p>\n
crushed with our sins<\/p>\n
that our sins could be removed that we<\/p>\n
can have a fresh start day by day<\/p>\n
walking with him so a future compassion<\/p>\n
when sins would be dealt with once and<\/p>\n
for all that's what we celebrate today<\/p>\n
at<\/p>\n
Easter my third point is God's steadfast<\/p>\n
love God's steadfast love in verse 20<\/p>\n
you will show faithfulness to Jacob and<\/p>\n
steadfast love to Abraham as you have<\/p>\n
sworn to our fathers from the days of<\/p>\n
old promises were made promises were<\/p>\n
made even in the Garden of Eden to Adam<\/p>\n
and Eve the first time they ever messed<\/p>\n
up God gave them the<\/p>\n
promise the seed of the woman a son will<\/p>\n
come from the woman and that son Will<\/p>\n
Conquer death<\/p>\n
Will Conquer The Curse which has which<\/p>\n
we experience every day in a broken<\/p>\n
world it's not just human beings Easter<\/p>\n
isn't just about us it's about a whole<\/p>\n
world which is broken by<\/p>\n
sin the way we deal with nature the way<\/p>\n
we deal with animals the way we deal<\/p>\n
with one another the way Nations war<\/p>\n
with each other and control resources<\/p>\n
for themselves in a selfish way God said<\/p>\n
I am going going to end<\/p>\n
it when did that happen at Easter a<\/p>\n
promise was given that our enemy the<\/p>\n
devil would one day be defeated later<\/p>\n
Abraham was promised that God would<\/p>\n
bless him and he would make him a<\/p>\n
blessing to All<\/p>\n
Nations that's what Jesus did at the<\/p>\n
cross the son of Abraham a descendant of<\/p>\n
Abraham died on the cross to be a<\/p>\n
blessing to everyone in this world still<\/p>\n
later God promised Jacob that God had a<\/p>\n
unique plan for his Descendants the<\/p>\n
children of Israel the question was<\/p>\n
always when the answer was always in the<\/p>\n
future when is God going to do this in<\/p>\n
the future the whole of the Old<\/p>\n
Testament is pointing<\/p>\n
forward God is going to do something but<\/p>\n
it's in the<\/p>\n
future it's like uh one of these movies<\/p>\n
you watch and it leaves you on a<\/p>\n
cliffhanger I've been watching uh Dune<\/p>\n
you know and the first one ends on a<\/p>\n
cliffhanger you wonder what's going to<\/p>\n
happen you go and watch the second one<\/p>\n
and again it leaves you on a<\/p>\n
cliffhanger and that's the whole of the<\/p>\n
Old Testament all 39 books are all<\/p>\n
pointing forward there's going to be a<\/p>\n
great climax there's going to be a great<\/p>\n
Victory and that's what we celebrate at<\/p>\n
Easter to today we celebrate that God<\/p>\n
has kept his<\/p>\n
promises that at the cross Jesus<\/p>\n
defeated Satan once and for all at the<\/p>\n
cross a descendant of Abraham would<\/p>\n
bring many to faith in God at the cross<\/p>\n
Jesus the descendant of Jacob Jacob who<\/p>\n
means liar his name means liar the lying<\/p>\n
schemer the corrupt guy who would steal<\/p>\n
the eyeballs out of your<\/p>\n
head that the his descendant would<\/p>\n
create a way for all<\/p>\n
Sinners to be restored to<\/p>\n
God all Sinners we can't point the<\/p>\n
finger we we look at Jacob and we say oh<\/p>\n
yeah look at Jacob but you know every<\/p>\n
time we point the finger three fingers<\/p>\n
are pointing back do we not lie are we<\/p>\n
not proud are we not full of anger we<\/p>\n
may spill it out on Twitter not on the<\/p>\n
streets we may spill it out out in our<\/p>\n
social media we may spill it out behind<\/p>\n
people's<\/p>\n
backs but we're is<\/p>\n
guilty we are as guilty and we need<\/p>\n
Easter as much as Abraham as much as<\/p>\n
Adam and Eve as much as King David as<\/p>\n
much as King Saul as all the people of<\/p>\n
the Old<\/p>\n
Testament I need it and you need it but<\/p>\n
praise God God's steadfast love there's<\/p>\n
a word in the Old Testament for this<\/p>\n
love it's<\/p>\n
calleded HED hessed means it's a<\/p>\n
NeverEnding steadfast unmovable will<\/p>\n
always love you kind of<\/p>\n
love this is not a fair weather friend<\/p>\n
or a fair weather love or I love you as<\/p>\n
long as you're attractive I love you as<\/p>\n
long as you're you're uh looking good<\/p>\n
but if you mess up you will be cancelled<\/p>\n
God doesn't have a cancel C<\/p>\n
culture when we mess up he is there for<\/p>\n
us he is closer than a<\/p>\n
brother so praise God for God's<\/p>\n
steadfast love steadfast love in<\/p>\n
answering all of the promises that he<\/p>\n
has given in the Old<\/p>\n
Testament fulfilled at the<\/p>\n
cross so finally I want to leave you<\/p>\n
with a<\/p>\n
question what are you waiting<\/p>\n
for what are you waiting for<\/p>\n
the people of Micah's day are struggling<\/p>\n
they're living in a world spinning out<\/p>\n
of control where there are Wars there<\/p>\n
are armies trampling across there's<\/p>\n
destruction like we see on our<\/p>\n
television screens around the<\/p>\n
world scenes of horror scenes of<\/p>\n
starvation scenes of of innocent people<\/p>\n
caught up in<\/p>\n
Conflict we see countries racked with<\/p>\n
corruption so Society full of evil no<\/p>\n
different to the society in Micah's day<\/p>\n
and Micah urges them don't give up trust<\/p>\n
in God hold on to him like an<\/p>\n
anchor hold on to the one who truly<\/p>\n
loves with a never stopping faithful<\/p>\n
steadfast love hold on keep Clinging On<\/p>\n
to him the Risen<\/p>\n
Christ still has the power power today<\/p>\n
to transform<\/p>\n
lives there's a woman in the<\/p>\n
gospels she's been racked with<\/p>\n
sickness bleeding that never stops no we<\/p>\n
think bleeding yeah that's it's really<\/p>\n
hard when that<\/p>\n
happens I I've be married 25 years this<\/p>\n
year and my wife's had different gy<\/p>\n
problems but we don't realize that for<\/p>\n
this woman to bleed means Never To<\/p>\n
Worship<\/p>\n
God cuz Back in the New Testament days<\/p>\n
if you had bleeding you were forbidden<\/p>\n
to enter the temple you were forbidden<\/p>\n
to come near to God you're forbidden to<\/p>\n
worship and this woman reaches out in<\/p>\n
her desperation she's spent all of her<\/p>\n
money on the doctors and no one could<\/p>\n
help she's tried all the other gods<\/p>\n
she's tried<\/p>\n
everything and she decides to secretly<\/p>\n
because if she touches Jesus she's a<\/p>\n
she's a woman she's on<\/p>\n
claim so she secretly decides I am going<\/p>\n
to give my last chance by trusting in<\/p>\n
Jesus and I'm going to touch him and I<\/p>\n
think if I just touch him he will heal<\/p>\n
me he will heal me and she reaches out<\/p>\n
to Jesus's cloak at the end of her<\/p>\n
tether when all the other options have<\/p>\n
failed she finally turns to the unique<\/p>\n
Son of<\/p>\n
God just by touching him she has faith<\/p>\n
that her life will be<\/p>\n
changed and that's still true today if<\/p>\n
we reach out to Jesus Christ Our Lives<\/p>\n
can be<\/p>\n
changed our lives can be<\/p>\n
transformed I know this to be true in my<\/p>\n
own<\/p>\n
life I know this to be true in many<\/p>\n
lives Jesus died at Easter to Pardon<\/p>\n
your<\/p>\n
iniquity Jesus died at Easter to pass<\/p>\n
over your transgressions to shower his<\/p>\n
love upon you to deal with your sins<\/p>\n
once and for all he gave you new<\/p>\n
life in a world full of broken promises<\/p>\n
broken<\/p>\n
contracts lies corruption and Brokenness<\/p>\n
Jesus keeps his<\/p>\n
word one day there will be no more<\/p>\n
Darkness one day there will be no more<\/p>\n
sorrow and death<\/p>\n
it begins at Easter but one day it will<\/p>\n
be completed when Christ returns and all<\/p>\n
of the Brokenness in our lives and all<\/p>\n
of the Brokenness in our world will be<\/p>\n
gone and until Jesus returns let us be<\/p>\n
those who cling to Christ especially in<\/p>\n
dark and troubled<\/p>\n
days maybe you're here because A friend<\/p>\n
brought<\/p>\n
you or because you're interested in<\/p>\n
finding out more more about<\/p>\n
God maybe you're someone who's tried a<\/p>\n
lot of different religious things and<\/p>\n
found them<\/p>\n
lacking most gods of this world can be<\/p>\n
categorized in three ways they're either<\/p>\n
concerned with<\/p>\n
wealth power or<\/p>\n
sex wealth power or<\/p>\n
sex but as we've seen here in Micah our<\/p>\n
God is conern<\/p>\n
eared with<\/p>\n
forgiveness with<\/p>\n
faithfulness and giving people a new<\/p>\n
start and hope our God is uniquely<\/p>\n
interested in you in giving you a you<\/p>\n
start a new life reach out he's not dead<\/p>\n
he is alive he's risen he's here come I<\/p>\n
you to come talk to someone talk to<\/p>\n
Pastor ni<\/p>\n
talk to some of the Christians you<\/p>\n
know ask them about what it's like to<\/p>\n
know Jesus and how to come to him all of<\/p>\n
you who are thirsty come everyone who's<\/p>\n
tired come all of you who are weak and<\/p>\n
heavy laden come this is the message of<\/p>\n
Easter Christ is risen he's here he<\/p>\n
comes to give us hope to give us life to<\/p>\n
give us peace to give us forgiveness of<\/p>\n
sins praise God<\/p>\n
