My family's back after

four months. Really a great pleasure to

be able to be here on a glorious day. On

the glorious day that our

whole faith rests upon. Um, Christ is

risen. Christ has risen indeed. Let's

pray.

Lord, as we hear your word, we pray,

Lord, that we can uh hear it with

resurrection power, that we can live

life in the spirit, that we can know uh

your goodness and grace, the work that

you have done.

We're thankful. We're so thankful that

you have come and saved us. We're

thankful for your word explains it. May

you work in our hearts today. May we

pour out our hearts to you. May we trust

you and know that you are good in

Christ's name. Amen. Well, if you can

turn your Bibles to John chapter 20.

John chapter 20.

We'll be reading from John 20 um verses

1- two. and then we'll jump over to 11

through

18.

So John 20

1-2 and then verse 11 to 20. This is the

word of God for the people of God.

Now on the first day of the week, Mary

Magdalum came to the tomb early while it

was still dark and saw that the stone

had been taken away from the tomb. So

she ran and went to Simon Peter and the

other disciple and the one whom Jesus

loved and said to them, "They have taken

the Lord out of the tomb and we do not

know where they have laid him."

And then jump to verse 11.

Uh but Mary stood outside weeping

outside stood weeping outside the tomb.

And as she wept, she stooped to look

into the tomb. And she saw two angels in

white sitting where the body of Jesus

had laid, one at the head and one at the

feet.

They said to her, "Woman, why are you

weeping?"

She said to them, "They have taken away

my Lord, and I do not know where they

have laid him." Having said this, she

turned around and saw Jesus standing,

but she did not know that it was Jesus.

Jesus said to her,"Woman, why are you

weeping? Whom are you seeking?"

Supposing him to be the gardener, she

said to him, "Sir, if you have carried

him away, tell me where you have laid

him, and I will take him away." Jesus

said to her, "Mary."

She turned to him in Aramaic or bonai,

which means teacher.

Jesus said to her, "Do not cling to me,

for I have not yet ascended to the

father, but go and tell to my brothers

and say to them, I am sending you my

father and your father, to my God and to

your God." And Mary Magdalene went and

announced to the disciples, "I have seen

the Lord."

and that he had said these things to

her. Thus ends the reading of the word.

So how does someone bring their whole

lives to God? How does someone bring

their whole lives to God? How does

someone bring their hopes and their

dreams,

disappointments,

losses,

discouragements to God?

The Bible never calls us to come to him

neat and and tidy. Uh we don't come at

all cleaned up. We don't come religious.

The songwriters of the Bible, for

example, in the Psalms describe their

coming to God as a a crying out of the

soul, a heart pouring out all his

anxieties.

Uh just if if you have a cup, I was just

thinking of this today actually when I

was sitting at Tim's table. If you have

a cup and you have water in it and you

pour it out and you start pouring out,

if you're pouring out your heart, if

you're and the water's like your heart,

everything goes, right? You can't just

have, oh, just the nice stuff. All of it

goes. And the

the Bible says, "Pour out your heart

with all your anxieties."

They they come hungry. the psalmist

needy nourishment for the soul.

The Bible calls us to come to God by

faith.

And faith is coming out to God uh coming

to God poor in spirit. Poor in spirit.

That's coming with disappointments.

That's coming with realizing our

brokenness and the frailties of this

world. And then also trusting less in

ourselves

and trusting wholly to God

who is the true satisfaction of our

souls.

And there might not be a better person

to look at and understand faith like

this than the first person who announced

Jesus resurrection. the first person who

actually Jesus reveals to

her after his resurrection and it's Mary

Magdalene. Mary Magdalene.

How do you bring everything to God?

We'll look at Mary

as a church. Uh next week, I think we're

going to start a series about looking at

different influences of the Bible and

we're looking at their faith in God. And

then the gospel of John, John puts forth

not his own faith,

but Mary's faith as the one prime

example of what faith is.

In John 20, the narrative

uh it explains how Jesus grows her faith

as a tender gardener. Look at the text.

It says verses 1 and two. It says, "Now

on the first day of the week, Mary

Magdal came

to the tomb early."

Now there there are many angles uh and

stages and characters

as the resurrection story unfolds and

reveals as revealed in the various uh

different accounts of the gospel. But

John here zooms in on Mary and traces

her story of grace.

see has been a story of grace for Mary.

See, the first time Jesus met Mary of

Magdalene, she was in the worst places

that she could ever be.

She was she was a tormented soul,

terrorized by seven demons.

Only uh the skewed imagination could

kind of guess her pain. rage,

squeamish outcasts, toggling between, "I

hate thee and I hate me."

Mary was in a bad place. Maybe you are

this morning, too. And Mary is in a bad

place. But that's where Jesus goes.

Jesus found her in her desperation and

delivered her. Mary's demonic depressed

and desperation turns into now a full

devotion to Jesus and she gives her

whole life to Jesus and becomes one of

his disciples.

She has followed Jesus even to the

cross. She's one of the few that

actually goes to the cross

and watches Jesus hang as a on a

criminal cross and die a disgraceful

death.

But now she has a new desperation

because her whole devotion to Jesus

seems lost.

She goes while it's still dark and she's

not going to experience a resurrection.

You have to get that Mary's not doubting

like Thomas would, right? She doesn't

believe in a resurrection that would

happen in the middle of history. Yes,

Jewish people thought maybe it would

come in the end, but not in the middle.

Conservative Jews, yes, believe this.

She wasn't going for a resurrection.

She was going maybe for honor, maybe to

figure out.

She's going because she doesn't

understand. She's confused. She's she's

she's back into that desperation mode

again. She's going into barrel mode.

See, look at verse two. It says she's

not looking for a resurrection. She's

saying, "Jesus, my Lord, is dead. The

body would have been laid there.

The body should be laid there, but it's

not there." Now, where is it? Where did

they lay it? So, I can grieve. So, I can

mourn. So I can lament that's why she's

going. The tomb where Jesus was buried

was found in a garden.

The spring flowers blooming all around.

And John the author now focuses

on Mary and her faith.

Mary

found outside the tomb and weeping.

This is an act of love.

Jesus stood outside

the tomb of Lazarus. You remember this

in John 11? He stood outside the tomb of

Lazarus, Jesus did. And he wept as an

act of love. And then there was a

resurrection.

And through Mary's tears, tears of

disappointment and tears of desperation,

she sees through these tears two angels.

And these two angels say to her,"Woman,

why are you weeping?"

Like a father, a mother to a child, all

Mary knows is her Lord has been taken

away. She just wants Jesus back.

And then in the garden,

another appears,

Jesus.

Now, Mary doesn't recognize Jesus at

first. If you actually look at the

stories of the resurrection, this is

actually quite common place. Jesus maybe

is there but doesn't reveal himself.

Jesus likes to work on people's faith

before revealing

himself. And Jesus is working on her

faith, tilling her heart, breaking her

soil

so he can plant a resurrection hope.

The gardener asked the same question.

Why are you weeping? Who are you

seeking?

He goes further than the angel. See,

Mary supposes that he is a gardener. So,

she goes back to what she knows. She

knows I know my Lord was buried here.

And so, I want to see his buried body so

I can weep.

How do you bring

all your losses and all your

disappointments and your hopes and

dreams to Jesus?

What we learn from Mary is that she's

honest,

she's humble,

she's broken, and she's seeking.

She's there.

She's not cynical nor skeptic, but full

of a willingness to believe

when all seems lost.

When Jesus really finds us, when he

finds you and me, it's never in the

place where we have it all together. But

when we are at our greatest need and our

heart is weeping

because we know that nothing in this

world will truly satisfy

and this is the best place to be.

When we know that nothing in this world

can satisfy then Jesus then becomes all

that we can be satisfied in.

Where we know our greatest need is where

Jesus can give his great exchange of

grace.

Follow me here. Look at verse 16. It's

simple. Jesus says to her, "Mary."

And then she turns to him and says in

Aramaic, "Raboni,"

There's so much beauty here.

See, when Jesus says to her, "Mary,"

he's doing more than just saying her

name.

He's inviting Mary into a deeper,

intimate, more personal relationship

with him.

She's saying, "I see Mary. I see you,

Mary. I see your tears.

And I know you you are known in your

weeping.

Don't we don't we all want to be known?

We all want to be known. And not just in

our good moments,

in our good days, but known in our

darkest places and in our weeping.

And Jesus says to her, "Mary."

And what she he says to her is she's

saying, "I see you. I know you. you're

known.

And then her response is to honor him.

His response is to her response is to

honor him. She says

to Jesus in honor, Veroni or Ajan or

teacher, right? He here is a story of

grace for Mary and it's for you and me.

See, when Jesus calls you, he calls you

by your name.

He knows you by your name. He invites

you personally.

But even more, he he does so by as he

says to Mary and he calls her by her

name, he's also giving you his honor.

He's giving you his honor.

And when we respond in faith,

honoring Jesus, then we are stepping

through a doorway of intimacy.

Jesus opens a door to embrace.

Embrace him and he embraces us.

Listen to Jesus' prayer. Uh this is in

John 17 right before the cross. His high

pleasing prayer. He says John 17:3,

it says, "And this is eternal life, that

they know you,

that they know you, the one and only

true God and Jesus Christ whom you have

sent." See, here is the gospel. The

gospel on Easter morning, the gospel on

resurrection Sunday.

Jesus personally gives us his honor so

that we can have access to him with

honored intimacy.

Jesus says in verse 17, "Don't cling to

me. Don't cling to me yet." I don't I

don't know how it happened but I can

imagine that when Jesus uh appears to

Mary and then Mary goes and sees him she

not only says teacher but she runs to

him and clings to him and hugs him and

life is restored.

All her hopes and all her dreams are

restored.

See, Jesus resurrection has many

glorious great truths.

And the glorious truth that we can see

here today is that Jesus is the true

gardener who plants hope in the dirt of

our lives.

Therefore, whatever darkness or whatever

disappointment, whatever loss we have,

we can bring it to Jesus. We can pour

out our heart, everything to Jesus. And

it is very easy to think that sin

that sin will never leave you or that

grief will never be healed or that a

person in your life will never change.

And Mary teaches us to bring our whole

lives to Jesus and to trust him and to

let him work on our faith to your faith

and watch a resurrection that's coming.

See, this is a story of grace. Jesus

invites Mary to a deeper space as she

honors him

through faith. That's the story of grace

for Mary and that's a story of grace for

you and me.

Let's pray.

Lord, we thank you for your stories of

grace that you give us. Each and every

one of us has a story of grace. We're

thankful that you meet us in our most

darkest places and even our most

brightest places. You are there and we

pray Lord that you would work on our

hearts. Lord, if anyone here is needing

to pour their hearts, may the spirit

just flood their hearts and to help them

be able to to see you to see you

beautiful and to know that you are the

true gardener working on their heart and

planting resurrection hope in their

lives. I pray that for for them. Pray

that for myself. Pray that for this city

in Christ's name. Amen.

","":"
["GET
