heavenly father we thank you so

much for your word we thank you that you

give us grace through it as uh aan Nati

just spoke of we pray that you will will

do that now for us as as we look at

First Corinthians I pray that you will

speak through me uh your servant dear

Lord Lord I pray that um I will move

into the the background into the Shadows

dear Lord and I pray that you will speak

through me I pray that your word will

work in our hearts and our minds and I

pray that your holy spirit will will be

with us um and I pray that you will be

with Becca as she teaches the children I

pray that you will do the same for her I

pray that you will speak through her I

pray that you will use your word to

encourage the children to strengthen

them in the faith in the gospel and I

just pray that you will give us more uh

love for you as we walk away today after

having looked at your

word the grass withers and the flower

Fades but your word stands forever dear

Lord we can build our lives on your word

it is a rock it is solid we thank you

for it bless us during this time I pray

all this in Jesus name

amen if if we want to see Disciples of

Jesus mature in their walk with him then

we should understand what type of heart

and mind a disciplemaker should have and

how growth in the gospel takes

place Paul helps us with this in 1

Corinthians 3:

5-9 and the context of this passage is

that the Corinthians are boasting in

those who are discipling them they are

boasting in their disciplemakers they

are comparing guys in leadership in the

church it might be like two groups at

Grace City comparing aan Nati with aant

Trey one group might say aan NTI has a

doctorate and he knows his stuff really

well uh whenever I walk away from his

sermons I really feel like I understand

the gospel other group might say aant

Tre has the best PowerPoint presentation

I've ever seen whenever I look at his

his pictures I understand the gospel and

and I can apply it to my life and

besides that he's an American football

fan he loves the Georgia Bulldogs and so

on my list he's top topnotch in the

discipl

makers two of the most well-known

leaders among the Corinthians were

called up in this conflict and these two

leaders were Paul and

apollis Paul who is the the author of

First Corinthians wants to put an end to

their prideful and childish way that

they are behaving and so he writes a

letter to them and in this letter he

uses himself as an illustration to

explain to them their thinking and their

behavior and how it is foolish and so we

have a lot to learn about discipleship

from this illustration so with this in

mind let's look at 1 Corinthians uh 3

verses

5-9 uh if you would please Advance the

slide um 1 Corinthians 3: 5-9

what then is Apollos what is Paul

servants through whom you believed as

the Lord assigned to each I planted

Apollos watered but God gave the growth

so neither he who plants nor he who

Waters is anything but only God who

gives the growth he who plants and he

who waters are one and each will receive

his wages according to his labor for we

are God's fellow workers you are God's

filled God's

Building and so this passage gives us a

good picture of how we are to think

about the relationship between our role

in responsibility and God's role in

responsibility in

discipleship so let's look first at our

role and responsibility in

discipleship oh thank you thank

you uh how does Paul describe his and

Apollo's role in

discipleship Paul described Des cribes

their role as servants are workers of

the lord we would disciple others we are

Servants of the Lord by serving

others and what is the responsibility of

a servant or a

worker it is to complete the assignment

that the one in charge has assigned to

them so in the case of Paul and Apollos

and also in the case of us it is to do

the work of discipleship that the Lord

has given to us in our context

God tells us in many places throughout

scripture to be Faithful Servants by

making

disciples fathers are called to bring

children up in the dis discipline and

the instruction of the

Lord all believers are called to to stir

one another another up to love and good

works elders and teachers in the church

are to know sound Doctrine so that they

can teach others the truths of the

Gospel

older women in the church are to train

the younger women in gospel

truths husbands are called to disciple

Liv

wives in a list of scripture that caus

us discipleship it could go on and on

and the point is that we are all

responsible for discipling one another

in some shape or

form some have more areas of

discipleship that they are responsible

for and others have less and you can

think of task of discipleship kind of

like gears in a clock each Will turns

and it contributes to the purpose or

function of the clock in some way in

some gears they're a little bit bigger

um some gears they're a little bit

smaller but they're all important for

the function of the clock and so there's

no one who's a Christian who is not

called to disciple others you're a gear

that fits into the clock somewhere with

the purpose of discipling

someone this doesn't mean that you have

to to lead a small group or to to teach

Sunday school all of these things are

good it could mean you speak a gospel

centered word of encouragement to

someone you know is struggling with a

particular

sin it could mean that you call someone

on the phone that week and read them

John 3:16 to help them to understand

God's love for

them think about your context and where

God has placed you and ask God where and

how he would use you to decide Le

others and so as a servant of the lord

we are responsible for discipling

others to go back to Paul's

illustration there is some part of God's

field that we are to be attending to we

are also responsible for using our

specific gifts to disciple

others Paul will go on a little bit

later in the book in in 1 Corinthians 12

to talk about how God gives us all

different gifts us and he gives us these

gifts so that we can serve one another

so that we can disciple one another and

build each up each other up in the

gospel and Paul makes a distinction in

gifting in our

text what then is Apollos what is Paul

gives the

growth both Paul and Apollos they both

have the the gift of evangelism he says

that they are servants through whom the

Corinthians believed and so they both

share the gospel with others but this

was Paul's focus in Ministry to the

Corinthians Paul planted the gospel me

which means that he shared the gospel

with others through evangelism and

people came to Faith through him this

was his main task and then Apollos

watered and came behind Paul and

continued to instruct people in the

gospel so discipleship looked different

for Paul and Apollos because of the

different gifts that God had given to

each you don't have to be aan n or you

don't have to be aan Trey God has gifted

them differently than you you were

called to use the the gifts that God has

given to you in the context that he has

placed you in so serve the Lord by using

the gifts he has given to to you to

serve others and point them to the

gospel discipleship will look different

from everyone but we all have the same

role of servant of the

Lord gospel of Center disciple ships

means that we are faithful to use the

God has given the gifts that God has

given to us God uses our efforts as a

channel in which he brings about gospel

change and gospel

growth and a good way to to think about

our role and responsibility in discip

ship is to think of ourselves kind of

like the the blue PVC pipe that you see

a water uh being carried into your home

or to your

apartment if you were to to look at a

piece of this pipe if you were to go to

to home Pro and to look at a piece of

this pipe and to to look through it uh

it would be clear and so you could see

to the end of the other

side the water the the pipe in your

apartment or your home it carries water

but it is neither the lifegiving water

nor the source of water it is the pipe

and that is its purpose is to carry

water and so what should we take away

from this about our role and

discipleship we are to be Faithful

Servants of the Lord and use the gifts

that he has given to us to disciple

others do you think of yourself as the

pipe that God uses to carry lifegiving

water to

others do you think of yourself as being

used by God to bring about growth in

other

Christians one common phrase among

Christians is to to let go and and to

let

God I'm sure many of you have have

probably heard that phrase It's a common

phrase and there is truth in that phrase

but we have to be careful how we apply

it some people think that God is going

to disciple others without me that he

just doesn't need me and they don't see

God calls us to disciple others so that

he can bring life and growth to

people we've just looked at our role in

responsibility in discipleship let's

look now at God's role in uh

discipleship the Corinthians had put

Paul and Apollos on a pedestal and given

them an authority and power that did not

belong to them Paul says that God is the

one who assigned Paul and Apollo to

bring the gospel to the

Corinthians God is the boss and he is

orchestrating his plan through us God is

the driving force behind everything that

is happening the power of the Gospel to

change people it doesn't reside with

Paul and Apollos but in God and so at

the heart of the Gospel is that God is

bringing about good for his people that

they can't bring about for

themselves God is the one who is

spiritually nourishing us he is the one

who by his grace gives life and then

growth going back to the illustration of

the the blue PVC pipe in your home God

is like the the source of the spring

water that comes through the pipes he

supplies the water that gives life and

growth to those in the house that drink

it as we disciple others we must realize

that our disciples growth in the gospel

it comes from the

Lord you can be the the blue py TVC pipe

in your home and that you carry the

water to someone but you can't change a

person's heart you're not the source of

water itself so you cannot give life or

growth and so we are dependent upon

God's grace for anything that we do as a

disciplemaker to be

effective we are dependent upon in need

of God to be gracious and SP Supply what

is needed for discipleship or disciples

growth he has he must Supply the water

and so we've looked at both God's

responsibility and our responsibility in

discipleship we looked at both of those

roles we've seen that we are called to

be a god dependent

disciplemaker let's look now at the

heart and mind that we should have as

disciplemakers Paul is illustrates to us

the heart and mind of humility that a

disciplemaker should have and how how

does he do this he belittles him himself

in the eyes of those who esteem

him he speaks of himself as a a servant

and counts himself and Apollos as

nothing he wants God to get all of the

credit and all the glory that he

deserves for the Corinthians come into

faith and also for their growth in the

faith Paul knows he can't take credit

for this and he doesn't want

to before the invention of automatic

lights that could dim and move on their

own theaters had a lighting crew to

adjust lighting and some of the lights

would would sit on the swivel and the

lighting crew could quickly turn these

lights and they could Point them on

something and highlight people or places

on the

stage and Paul is acting like a director

in that he is T talking to a lighting

crew in a rehearsal that is going

horribly

wrong he stops the rehearsal and talks a

lighting crew and he says guys what what

are you

doing you were getting it wrong you were

putting the spotlight on the wrong ones

here he goes up where the the lighting

crew is and he takes the two handlebars

that are on the light and he turns it to

the main character on stage and he says

you are pointing at the light at all the

other characters on stage and you are

missing the main star of the show you

are missing the one who is most

important here

he then tells them to to follow this

character throughout the performance

because he is the most important one

that the play centers around he is the

one that gives the play

meaning without him there is no play in

what happens on stage it doesn't

matter the Corinthians have put the

spotlight on the leaders in Corinth like

Apollos and

Paul Paul takes the spotlight off of

them and puts it on

God the Corinthians are not to boast in

him or in

because they are both on the same status

level of being Servants of God and they

both are unable to bring about gospel

growth and

people Paul makes himself look weak here

because he's saying I have no ability to

do anything it is all of

God he is pointing the Corinthians to

look past the Servants of the field and

look to God who is the boss who is

orchestrating everything and bringing

about the gospel

growth and this is the same heart and

attitude we want to have as we disciple

others gospel centered

discipleship uh seeks

humility if you want to Be an Effective

disciplemaker then ask God to Humble you

you want both you and the ones that you

disciple to look to God for

growth and how are you doing in these

areas as a

disciplemaker do you look to yourself to

to get things done or you do you look to

God to work through you are you

dependent upon yourself or are you

dependent on

God and a good test is is to look at

your prayer

life how much time do you spend praying

for your

disciples a disciplemaker who is in need

and dependent on God will spend time

praying for those he or she

disciples and that is what we're about

to look at now we need to continually

remember that our power to disciple

others comes from God it doesn't come

from

us if you are struggling in this area

then I encourage you to memorize this

passage or to at least write it down on

an index card and place it in your Bible

or somewhere so that whenever you

disciple others you are reminded to

depend on God for their life and growth

in the

gospel let's look now at how gospel

centered discipleship moves us to

prayer God's word teaches us if we are

in need of something that we should come

to him and ask him to supply

it and we have just seen that we are in

need of God to work through us to grow

people in the gospel if we want God to

use us as discipl makers we should

become prayer

warriors everything that we do as a

disciplemaker should start with and be

saturated in

prayer the first thing that we should do

is spend time on our knees praying

before the Lord before anything else

that we attempt to do as disciple

makers and so in teaching we should be

in prayer in preparation we should be in

prayer before teaching and during

teaching I had a friend in a seminary

once who told me that he was uh

preaching sermon in Uganda he said I

just didn't I didn't feel prepared for

the sermon uh and I did as I was up

there preaching um I didn't feel like I

understood what was going on so he said

I just stopped and I prayed and I was

dependent upon the Lord to speak through

me we need to have that same attitude we

need to have that same mind and that

same heart is that we go to the Lord

constantly in

prayer part of discipleship one of the

the the tough parts of discipleship is

rebuking

others part of discipleship is talking

to other Christians about areas of sin

in their lives that are not honoring to

Christ we are called to speak the truth

in love to someone that is living in sin

and this is what Paul is doing in the

text that we are looking at in 1

5-9 the Corinthians are are acting in a

sinful way so he has written them in

part of his letter to rebuke them and so

we need to pray for for their heart to

be receptive to receiving God's word in

correction we need to pray for our heart

to speak words of Grace in

humility what about displaying the

gospel we need to pray that God will

work in our hearts and our minds so that

we will live out the gospel well before

our

disciples we need to ask the Lord to to

use our lives to encourage others to

live out the gospel as

well part of the discipleship means

living with people and so whenever you

live with people you realize that no

matter who it is what Aon it is you know

that they are sinful and so you're going

to see that sin come up in their lives

how do they handle it do they go to the

person and ask for

forgiveness as we offend others and go

and ask for forgiveness we need to ask

the Lord to use this situation whenever

we ask for forgiveness in our disciples

lives so they see that and so they see

the gospel in us they see forgiveness

being displayed in

us what about embracing the gospel we

need to pray that God will grow our

hearts in the gospel so that we will

know it well and be able to share gospel

truths with

others we just looked at using prayer as

a way to ask the Lord to bless the

different task of discipleship like

embracing the gospel displaying and

teaching the gospel let's look now at

using prayer as a task of discipleship

in and of

itself we want to pray the gospel for

those that we disciple

God uses Our Gospel centered prayers to

grow people in the gospel just like he

might use our our teaching our

displaying the gospel or embracing the

gospel the Apostle Paul gives us an

example of how to pray the gospel in

Colossians uh chapter 1 verses 3 through

verse uh

14 there it

is we always thank God the father of our

Lord Jesus Christ when we pray for you

since we have since we heard of your

faith in Christ Jesus and of the love

that you have for all the saints because

of the Hope laid up for you in heaven of

this you have heard before in the TR the

word of Truth The Gospel which has come

to you as indeed in the whole world it

is bearing fruit and growing as it also

does among you since the day you heard

it and understood the grace of God in

truth as you learned it from epas our

beloved fellow servant he is a faithful

minister of Christ on your behalf and

has made known to us your love in the

spirit uh next slide

please okay there we go and so from the

day we heard we have not ceased to pray

for you asking that you may be filled

with the knowledge of his will in all

spiritual wisdom and understanding so as

to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord

fully pleasing to him bearing fruit in

every good work and increasing in the

knowledge of God may you be strengthened

with all power according to his glorious

might for all endurance and patience

with joy giving thanks to the father who

has qualified you to share in the

inheritance of the Saints in light he

has delivered us from the domain of

darkness and transferred us to the

kingdom of his beloved Son in whom we

have Redemption the Forgiveness of

sins and so in this text we see the

importance that Paul places on prayer

for gospel prayer for

believers and he says in verse n and so

from the day we heard we have not ceased

to pray for you so from the first day

that Paul heard of the colossian faith

of their hope of their love and their

growth in the gospel he has been praying

for

them the church in uh colassi is doing

well they are growing in the gospel and

Paul wants to to pray that they will

continue to do well and so you can see

that the way that Paul views prayer here

he continues on in prayer for gospel

growth in the Colossians because he sees

that prayer is something that God will

use to increase their growth in the

gospel he wants the Colossians to

increase abundantly in the gospel and in

Colossians 4:12 Paul again shows us how

his fellow worker in the gospel places

importance on prayer for the Colossians

growth in the gospel he says epis who is

one of you a servant of Christ Jesus

greets you always struggling on your

behalf in his prayers that you may stand

mature and fully assured in all the will

of God and so epis is one of the ones

that led the Colossians to Faith and he

is constantly in prayer for them in

order for them to become mature in the

faith God uses Our Gospel Center prayers

to grow IMM mature

Believers and so let us pray without

ceasing with expectation that God will

use our prayers for the growth of his

field are we praying like this for our

brothers and sisters in the

faith are we praying for gospel growth

for those who have just come to the

faith at Grace

City fathers and mothers are you praying

for gospel growth in your children

husbands are you praying for gospel

growth in your wife leaders in the

church are you praying for gospel growth

in those that God has called you to

Shepherd what do we pray for when we are

praying for gospel

growth the simple answer is that we we

pray the

gospel and a good place to start is to

follow in the steps of the Apostle Paul

he says you may be filled with the

knowledge of his will and all spiritual

wisdom and understanding so as to walk

in a manner worthy of the Lord fully

pleasing to him bearing fruit in every

good

work and so Paul is praying that the

Colossians will know God and that they

will seek him to live the life that he

is calling them to live they're asking

him for his will for knowledge of how to

live and so we encounter Cho choices

every day where we have the freedom to

to

choose we have the holy spirit in us and

so we want to pray that the Lord will

use his holy spirit to help us to make

choices that are according to his ways

and the way that he wants us to live we

want to pray that God will use his holy

spirit to give on our disciples the

ability to make decisions in light of

the Gospel that honor and please

him he goes on to say that they will

increase in the knowledge of God we want

those that we decide iple to know more

about God so they can treasure him more

so we want to pray that God will show

them more of who he is and that they

will comprehend more and more about his

character more about his attributes of

of who he is of how wonderful he

is he says may you be strengthened with

all power according to his glorious

with

joy for us to to walk in a manner that

is worthy of the Lord then the Lord must

strengthen us to do so there are so many

forces that will try to keep us from

doing

this the world that we live

in even our own sinful nature that

remains in US whenever we become

Christians they will all try to keep us

from living in the way that the Lord

wants us to

live as those we disciple face

difficulty and adversity from the evil

one in life we want to pray that the

Lord will strengthen them to endure and

to help them to live for him according

to his ways in all of this we want to to

for people to have joy in the midst of

this he goes on to say give thanks to

the father who has qualified you to

share in the inheritance of the Saints

in

light he has delivered us from the

domain of darkness and transferred us to

the kingdom of his beloved Son in whom

we have Redemption the Forgiveness of

sins

and so lastly we should pray for our

disciples to know the inheritance that

they have in

Jesus we are part of his kingdom now

there's nothing that can separate us

from him or his love not even our sin

because he has forgiven us of it and so

a guilty conscience can rob us of the

joy that Christ came to give and so we

want to to pray for our disciples we

want to pray that they will know the

gospel well that they will know God's

love for them

well let let's

pray dear heavenly father we thank you

so much for using us to disciple others

in your church is a it is a beautiful

way um that you bring people to yourself

and the way that you disciple people and

and grow people in the gospel we pray

that you will continue to to use us I

pray that you will help us to to see uh

that you have called us to disciple

others there's no no one in this room

who is not called to discipleship in

some shape or form and so I pray that

you will be help help us to be Faithful

Servants like uh Paul and Apollos still

Lord help us to to plant help us to to

water but we know that only you can give

growth dear Lord and so I pray that we

will see ourselves as like the the PVC

pipe that comes into the building or

into her home dear Lord U only you can

give grow

only you can give life and so I pray

that as we disciple others I pray that

you will help us to be dependent upon

you I pray that you will humble us dear

Lord I pray that you will fill us with

your Holy Spirit give us wisdom uh give

us knowledge of you dear Lord give us

love uh for one another and I pray all

this in Jesus name amen

","":
Grace
