right great all right so hello

everybody hope you all are doing well

today we are in our last week of our

brief study in the book of Ephesians so

this is our last week over the past two

weeks we've been we started looking at

the second half of Ephesian

which is about how to live the Christian

Life the first three chapters of

Ephesians is about what we

receive what happens to us when we place

our faith and our trust in Christ and

now in the final three chapters chapters

to6 Paul starts addressing the issue of

how do we live as Christians in other

words how does the gospel affect the way

we

live last week we talked about the means

of growth to put off the old self to be

renewed in the attitude of your minds

and to put on the new self and then in

light of this we see how Paul applied it

to what it applies what it means to put

off the old self and what it means to

put on the new self in the different

aspects of our life terms of honesty

communication stealing working kindness

bitterness

forgiveness and what we had said last

week was that before our behavior is

changed our hearts must be changed first

in other words the Christian life

doesn't start by what we do but by who

we are we have a new self- understanding

we become new people you think of

yourself in a new way how does that work

how do you do that by what the Bible

says you are a forgiven person a child

of God a new person who has been made

alive as we just read just now as

beloved and we said to the degree that

we live out of this new identity of who

the Bible says we are to that degree Our

Lives can be

changed and in our passage for today

we'll see even more clearly about how to

live the Christian life so if you have

your Bibles turn to Ephesians chapter

5 verses 1 to

20 next slide

please follow God's example therefore as

dearly beloved dearly loved children and

walk in the way of love just as Christ

loved us and gave himself up for us as a

frag fragrant offering and sacrifice to

God but among you there must not be even

a hint of sexual immorality or of any

kind of impurity or of greed because

these are improper for God's holy people

nor should there be obscenity foolish

talk or course joking which are out of

place but rather

Thanksgiving for of this you can be sure

no immoral impure or greedy person such

a person is an idolator has any

inheritance in the Kingdom of Christ and

of God let no one deceive you with empty

words for because of such things God's

Wrath comes on those who are disobedient

therefore do not be partners with them

for you were once Darkness but now you

are light in the Lord live as children

of light for the fruit of the light

consists in all goodness righteousness

and truth and find out what pleases the

Lord have nothing to do with the

fruitless Deeds of Darkness but rather

expose them it is shameful even to

mention what the disobedient do in

secret but everything exposed By the

Light becomes visible and everything

that is illuminated becomes a light this

is why it is said wake up sleeper rise

from the dead and Christ will shine on

you be very careful then how you live

not as unwise but as wise making the

most of every opportunity because the

days are evil therefore do not be

foolish but understand what the Lord's

will is do not get drunk on wine which

leads to debauchery instead be filled

with the spirit speaking to one another

with Psalms hymns and songs from the

spirit sing and make music from your

heart to the Lord and always giving

thanks to God the Father for everything

in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ

this is God's

word so this passage what we just read

is a continuation of chapter 4 it's all

part of one main idea the Christian

lifestyle In this passage we see three

important keys in understanding how the

gospel affects how we live actually no

we see four four important keys in

understanding how the gospel affects how

we live in verse 17 of chapter 4 Paul

says You must no longer live as the

Gentiles do in the futility of their

thinking and what that means is becoming

a Christian isn't like getting some

spiritual help in order for you to keep

living the life you want to live but

rather it's a complete change it's a

whole new life you become a whole new

person and what that means

is we can't live the way we used

to so the four important keys that we

see in this chapter are number one our

identity number two what sin is and what

obedience is number three living in

wisdom and number four

Joy so in verse 1 to2 Paul says follow

God's example therefore as what as

dearly loved children and walk in the

way of love just as Christ loved us and

gave himself up for us as a fragrant

offering and sacrifice to

God when we hear this we may tend to

think that yes I have to be obedient my

life has to line up to the Bible

otherwise I'm not a good Christian and

very very often we focus too much on the

first half follow God's example so much

to the fact that we forget the second

half as dearly loved children we forget

the fact that we are dearly loved

children and instead we focus on just

the

behavior and if we do that we are

severely hurting ourselves Paul doesn't

do that he tells us to imitate God yes

why does he tell us to do that

because we because you are dearly loved

children Paul starts by telling us who

we are he's saying that we will be able

to imitate God to the degree that we

think of recognize and really are

adopted into his family in other words

we have to think of ourselves as a

dearly loved child of God or else we're

not even living the Christian life at

all

unless we are governed by the idea

unless you are governed by the idea that

you are a dearly loved child of God you

cannot live we cannot live we can't

imitate God the Bible says we're made in

in God's image that's what we see in

what's what we saw last week in verse 24

of chapter 4 We're made in God's image

and unless unless we see that we have

been built to have a loving father a

loving parent unless we see that we

can't live the Christian

Life and the doctrine that Paul is

getting at here is the biblical doctrine

of

adoption and we have a lot to cover

today but this is so amazing that we

just have to stop for a bit and focus on

this Doctrine because even though the

Bible gives us many many different

images of our relationship to God he's

our Shepherd he's our captain he's our

Rock he's our refuge there's so many

different different images the most

fundamental way we need to think of

ourselves in our relationship with God

is is what our father that's how Jesus

taught his disciples to pray Our Father

what does it mean to be a Christian to

believe the Bible yeah that's great to

be forgiven yes that's amazing to be

born again yes but all of of these

things being forgiven being born again

is for what to be his children

adoption dearly loved

children you know many many people many

of us tend to think of Salvation is just

I believe in Jesus and I'm forgiven and

my sins are erased Jesus died for me and

his blood wiped away my sins and now I

can start again now I can finally start

again that's that's great but that's

only half of it because what adoption

means is not only that the past is wiped

away but that we have so much more we

are God's children we're not only

forgiven we are

accepted the last person to give up on

somebody is who their parents a boss can

fire an employee but a parent can never

fire a child you can never be fired

fired from being a child to be a son or

daughter of God means you're accepted

you can't be fired you're

loved and the way to know if you believe

this is are we living in

Freedom or does our self-esteem do our

emotions go up and down depending on how

successful we are at being

Christians do you tend to think oh I

messed up again God is angry at me he's

going to give up on me when you fail do

we think like that when we fail and do

we think okay I'm doing better today I'm

being a good Christian I can face God

today I can pray I can worship today if

we think like that really we're living

like orphans we're not living like God's

children Paul says imitate God follow

God's example as dearly loved

children in other words be who you are a

dearly loved child this is our identity

this is the reason why we are able to

imitate God in the first place not in

order for him to accept us but because

we are already his dearly loved

children so now in verses 5 to

14 we see that to live as Christians we

must be able to see sin for what it is

firstly in verse 11 what does Paul call

Sin he calls it Deeds of Darkness

Deeds of Darkness anything that is

Disobedience to what God has said in his

word so for example in verse 5

says no immoral impure or greedy person

such a person is an idolor has any

of God I think this is a definition of

sin that we're all familiar with

external behaviors of

Disobedience but it isn't just that

because if you notice Paul

says such a person is an

idolator which shows us that sin also is

to do with the internal motives of the

heart we talked a lot about this last

week but what this means briefly what it

means is it's possible to do something

that externally isn't

wrong but internally for a motive that

makes it sinful

repeat that again it's possible to do

something that externally isn't wrong

but

internally for a motive that makes it

sinful we see idolatry being the first

commandment you shall have no other gods

before me and and Tim Keller he sums it

up this way that God is basically saying

if there is anything more important to

you than me anything that gives you more

meaning in life than I do anything that

that is a greater foundation for your

sense of worth and value and

significance than me if there is

anything you love more than me anything

you Center your life on more than me

that is a god that is a religion and

even even if it's a good thing even if

it's your children that are more

important than God or a career that is

more important than God those things

will eat you alive because he continues

anything you put in the place of God

will fail to give you what only the true

God can give you what he's saying and

what Paul is saying is that there are

things externally that look fine but

because of our hearts motives actually

mean it to be sin so for example you can

come to church for many reasons you can

come because you're curious and you're

interested in learning more about

Christianity learning more about God

you can also come because you want to

worship God you want to serve God you

want to serve other people but there's

another way that we can come to church

we can also come because we feel like

coming to church is a way to get God

into our debt we won't say that we won't

think that but the way to know if we're

doing that is when things don't go the

way we want when life doesn't go the way

we want it to go do we find ourselves

saying forget you God look at all the

things I'm doing for you you can't do

this for me if we find ourselves saying

that if we find ourselves thinking that

then something else has become more

important than God see it's all it's all

the same behavior going to church but

different motivations of the heart and

so we see here Paul shows us that sin is

both external Deeds of darkness and

internal idolatry

the question that follows is where does

sin come from Paul gives us the answer

to that when he

says for once for once you were Darkness

but now you are light in the

Lord notice what he's saying not only

does he say sin is sin is Deeds of

Darkness but he says human beings are

Darkness human

beings that's pretty

offensive Paul is what he's saying here

is he's talking about the state of our

hearts now to some of us this may sound

too negative we may we may think ah I

know I'm not perfect but I'm definitely

better than Hitler right I haven't

killed anyone I know I'm not perfect but

there's a murderer down the road a lot

worse than me well during World War II

one of the engineers of the Nazi

Holocaust was a man named Adolf ikan

after World War II he was caught and he

was put on trial in the trial there were

eyewitness survivors that were brought

in to the court to testify against him

there was one man who went into the room

he was an eyewitness he was a Jew he

went into the room he saw Adolf ikan and

he started sobbing uncontrollably and he

collapsed on the ground there was chaos

in the

courtroom later he was interviewed and

he was asked why did you collapse when

you saw him did did all the terrible

images and memories of what he did to

you what he did to your people did all

that flash before your eyes you know

what he said he said when I walked in

when I walked in and saw him I suddenly

realized that he was an ordinary human

being just like me and suddenly I became

terrified about myself I saw that I am

capable of the same things and he

collapsed what happened he looked into

his own heart and he saw

Darkness we may think that we would

never be capable of doing certain things

but if we were to just look back over

the past 5 years 10 years of Our Lives

how many of us have done things how many

of us have said things thought things

that we never would have thought we

would have done things that have

horrified us things that we thought oh

I'm too good to do that and then we

actually end up doing that

the Bible says our hearts in our natural

sinful State our hearts are

darkness and Paul what Paul says as

Christians are not deceived about this

we don't deny it we know that this is

true and Paul shows us that because of

sin the external and internal nature of

sin our ability and potential to sin in

both heart and deed the consequence of

this is Wrath

verse

six for because of such things God's

Wrath comes on those who are

disobedient we tend to not like wrath

and often times that's because we really

misunderstand God's Wrath we tend to

think of we may tend to think of God's

Wrath as God losing his temper getting

uncontrollably angry wanting to punish

us just for the sake of it but in the

Bible that's not what wrath means

wrath is actually a settled opposition

in other words God is opposed he's

against sin God's Wrath is upon

sin and now we may we may say and think

to ourselves again yes some people some

people deserve God's Wrath Hitler

deserves God's Wrath the Nazis deserve

God's Wrath me I may lie a little bit I

may get angry every now and then but

overall my life isn't nearly as bad as

other people's surely I don't deserve

God's Wrath I'm just trying my best to

be a good

person I've used a similar illustration

before some of us may remember but think

of a mother think of a mother she's

working three jobs she starts her day

early in the morning finishes work late

into the night why does she do this in

order to provide for her one child she

teaches the child always tell the truth

always help people don't don't hurt

people work hard do your

best so this is what she teaches the

child she's teaching the child good

things always tell the truth always help

people the mother Works incredibly hard

and she's finally able to send her son

to

college and it's really hard but it

works out when he graduates College he

moves to a different city he never

contacts his mom again she calls him he

never calls back every

San she doesn't see him she doesn't hear

from him what would we say what would we

say to that well he may say well I'm

living a good life I'm being a good

person I'm listening to how she told me

she wants me to live isn't that enough

isn't that enough what would you say no

of course not why because you are

ignoring the one person who has given

you everything you are ignoring the one

person to whom you owe

everything now that's that's what we do

to God if we say I'm living a good life

isn't that enough no it's not if God is

real if God created

us and we owe God everything it is not

enough to just live a good life

according to how we want it's not it's

not enough to just live a good life and

not live for God that's sin and we are

guilty and Paul is showing us here what

what sin is what sin

deserves he says you were once Darkness

because of that we're

guilty but what Paul is also showing

us is that we are now light you were

once Darkness but now you are light in

Lord live as children of light what does

this

mean well we see in the next verse in

verse n that

it represents goodness rightfulness

truthfulness but what does it mean to be

light because what Paul is not saying

Paul is not saying you now do actions of

light but now he's saying you are now

you are light in the

Lord we aren't just light we are light

in the Lord which what he's doing is

he's speaking about us being in Christ

that's what the first half of Ephesians

is just full

of that when we are in Christ we have

every spiritual blessing when we are in

Christ we are rescued from Death to life

we have been raised up in Christ when we

are in Christ we are united with him so

that everything that is true about him

is true about us now you see we see here

we are we are light in

Christ what that means is the the moment

we believe in Christ and put our faith

in Jesus in that moment we are united to

him and we are put in him remember from

last week we become new even though in

ourselves we are still Darkness we are

still flawed but in Christ God sees us

as brilliant as beautiful as acceptable

as goodness righteousness and Truth is

isn't that

wonderful if we live life of guilt we

think to ourselves oh I'm so bad I have

all these bad things in my life if we if

we just hate ourselves we will not live

an obedient life we will give into

temptation but if we just say well I'm

fine we're fine God's forgiven me so now

it doesn't matter how I live that's not

true either this whole passage Paul is

saying sin flee from it expose it he's

saying you are different now have

nothing to do with the fruitless Deeds

of Darkness rather expose them we see a

balance here knowing that we are light

in the Lord and because we are light in

the Lord we want nothing to do with

sin because of who we are because of who

God has made us to be if we have this

balance we will have the motivation to

live in a Godly way we will be able to

pick ourselves up when we fail

and we will by knowing what sin is we

will actually be able to walk in

obedience next the third thing that we

see is that since we are children of of

light in the Lord one implication one

application is that we live with wisdom

we live in wisdom like Paul says in

verses 15 to

17 what does it mean to live in

wisdom what does it mean to live in

wisdom

well it means at the very least that

living the Christian life is more than

just obeying the moral rules it's more

than just looking in the Bible saying

these are things I can do these are are

the things I can't do and just sticking

to that why is it more than that because

most of life's decisions don't involve

the moral

rules we know that there are certain

jobs that we can take we know that there

are certain jobs that we can't take we

know for example that it is never going

to be God's will for us it's not God's

will for us to be hit men to kill people

to be murderers since why it's very

clear in God's word do not kill but

there's a lot of things we don't know

either we don't know who we should marry

since there all there are all kinds of

people that we could marry as long as

they have they also have faith in Jesus

there are also all kinds of jobs that we

could take that are morally

permissible so many options yet some are

wise some are unwise how do we tell the

difference that's a matter of wisdom

being wise is being moral because it

says understand what the Lord's will is

in verse

17 that refers to God's

word what Paul is saying in verse 15 is

to be very careful about how you live be

very careful about how you live how are

we living what are the motives of our

heart for example say we are making a

lot of money what are we doing it for

are we doing it to be rich to have

comfort is it so that we can have power

is it so that we can be liked and

accepted and

respected or is it to serve God is it to

serve other people because like we've

been talking about for the past few

weeks we can do the very same outward

action with very different motives and

that really will impact our lives and it

will impact the people around us in a

very tangible way to be wise means Paul

says here to be wise means to be careful

about how we live to look at the motives

of our heart find out what we're doing

it for and if we don't if we just go

Through the Motions not trying to figure

out why we do what we do we're just

being unwise we will be tossed around

like waves ultimately we will be

enslaved to what we really want what

what we really want without knowing

it wisdom is a matter of knowing human

nature it's a matter of knowing our

motives knowing God's will knowing the

times so that we can make decision

decisions that are strategic and

wise and finally in verses 18 to 20 Paul

speaks about not getting drunk on wine

but rather being filled with the spirit

so to recap so far he's talked about one

our identity as beloved children he

talked about the importance of

understanding sin obedience to God he's

talked about how from that flow a life

of wisdom but then all of a sudden he's

talk he starts talking about being

filled with the spirit what's the

connection

here one way to sum it up is that at the

heart of what it

means to be in Christ at the heart of

what it means to be a Christian to be in

Christ is

Joy there is a joy that comes with being

filled by the Holy Spirit a joy that

nothing else can

replace why does he compare being drunk

to being filled on by the

Spirit when people are drunk you lose

self-control you are under the influence

alcohol and we tend to think that

alcohol makes you

happy but scientists will tell you that

alcohol is a depressant which means it

depresses parts of your brain it stops

certain parts of your brain

functioning so Dr Martin Lloyd Jones

he's a he's a pastor he's also a doctor

he says that alcohol depresses

everything that makes a person behave at

their very best and

highest and another commentator another

Pastor named John stot he says that the

results of being filled with the spirit

is very different the fullness of the

spirit makes us more human it makes us

more aware of our resources it makes us

more aware of what we

have it makes us more aware

of who we are we talked about us being

beloved children right this the spirit

that's what the spirit does in livens

our mind our

heart and our Wills basically in one

sentence what the spirit does is the

spirit makes us like

Christ the spirit takes the work of

Jesus Christ what he has done things

that we may know with our head things

that we may know with our head and he

makes it real to our heart heart he

makes it so real to our heart that we

begin to say so what about these

problems you know Tim killer he says the

reason we fail to be obedient the reason

we fail to

make good choices the reason we make

foolish

choices is because we are not happy

enough in

Christ it's because we are not happy

enough in Christ why do we make stupid

decisions often times it's because we

are so unhappy and empty inside why do

we disobey why do we give into

temptation why do we blow up and say why

did I do that because we aren't happy

enough to be obedient there has to be a

fountain of joy in the middle of our

life and that comes because the spirit

fills us what that means is to be

overcome to be compelled with what the

spirit thinks and what the spirit

does and what does the Holy Spirit do in

John chapter 16 Jesus said says when the

Holy Spirit comes he will glorify

me Jesus Christ the only obedient person

who ever lived died on the cross to take

the curse for my for our Disobedience

and when we are moved by this when we

are amazed by this it will make us want

to be

obedient on the cross the law of God and

the love of God were satisfied at once

why on the cross the law of God was

satisfied and that way God doesn't have

to punish us for our sins cuz like we

said we are guilty but on the cross the

love of God was satisfied too and that

means he can save us now we can be light

in the Lord and to the degree that the

Holy Spirit takes what we know in our

heads and applies it to our hearts to

the degree that we see what Jesus has

done for us and that we are moved by

that to that degree we will be wise this

is what it means to be filled with the

spirit and if we are filled with the

spirit what happens we live a life of

gratitude giving thanks to God for

everything we live a life of service to

other people see it's right there on the

screen we make music in our hearts isn't

that wonderful isn't that Joyful We Walk

around singing the holy spirit gives us

an inward joy we have a song of joy in

our hearts and Spirit-filled public

worship

is a joyful celebration of God's Mighty

acts a celebration of what Jesus has

done don't we want a life like this to

be happy in Christ like this to be full

joy Paul says you can be like this how

is what Jesus has done is that is it

real to you are you overcome with the

thought that God is your father that you

are his

child you know the Great parable of the

prodigal

son in Luke

15 this is why we can be God's children

this is why we can be filled with the

spirit so to recap there were two

brothers right in the story and we had a

a younger brother and an older brother

and the younger brother asked his father

for some of his share of The Inheritance

before his father died he says father I

want part of what I am going to get when

you die I want that

now so the father gives it to the

younger son the younger son takes the

money goes off squanders all the money

lives lavishly he comes back

empty-handed with nothing to his

name what does the father do he comes

back like any father he accepts he

protects he bestows his love and riches

on the child the younger brother is on

his way back to confess what he's done

the father won't even let him do it he

sees him coming he runs towards him he

jumps on him he hugs him he kisses him

the son tries to confess the father says

stop it he tells his servants put my

robe on his back put my ring on his

finger kill the fattened calf we're

going to have a party my younger son I

thought was dead but now he's

alive this is the love of God it's not

conditioned on our Perfection but on his

Perfection but there's more to the story

right when they get back into the house

the older brother is really angry

angry why is he

angry because here's the interesting

part since the younger brother has

squandered all of his wealth everything

the father is now giving to the younger

brother actually belongs to the older

brother so the older brother is angry

he's like I've worked hard for all of

this and you're just going to give it to

him he doesn't deserve it look at what

he's done with his

money and when Jesus tells this parable

what he's saying is I am the true older

brother how does this work well what

would a real older brother have done he

would have gone out there he would have

found the younger brother in the pigy

lifted him up lifted him up brought him

home and said little brother here is my

robe here is my ring I freely give it to

you enter back into the joy of the

father let's have a party the true older

brother is Jesus the reason we can be

adopted and to God's family the reason

we can be children of light in the Lord

is because Jesus Christ brothered us

Jesus Christ treated us as a brother

Jesus Christ spent his love on

us because Jesus Christ brothered you

God is now your father we were built for

family

love but no human family could possibly

meet the needs of our heart this is the

family that we were we were meant to to

have Jesus Christ has brothered you so

that God could father you come home to

him say to him father I've sinned I need

your fatherly love and you will get it

because you have the love of Jesus

Christ let this melt your heart you can

have this Joy live as a dear child for

that is what you are let's

pray father we thank you is for the

blessing of being your children Lord and

for all of what that

entails we pray God that Holy Spirit

would make these truths real to us

that Lord that we would see Jesus we

would see him and we would just be moved

Lord that you would help us to live in

Freedom Lord that you would help us to

make wise decisions that you'd help us

to remember our

identity Lord ultimately to glorify you

Lord help us to have this deep unending

joy and we thank you that we can in

Jesus name
